My dear Julian,

Given time, I would spend my whole life trying to find the right words to describe just how breathtakingly beautiful you look right now, spent, naked, asleep in your bed.

What a wonderful endeavour it would be.

But I will be gone soon.

So, instead, please accept a few words from an old soul who, it seems, has not forgotten its tenderheartedness.

Try to rest peacefully, Julian. Don't let the terrors of war change you. I know I have mocked you often for your unrepentant optimism, but it is a strength I will never have.

Stay safe and brave and strong. Give others the benefit of that lovely smile of yours.

Give the people you care about all the love I know you have.

And, if in the quiet moments of loneliness you might think of me, I hope it will bring you comfort to know that you have been loved more than I ever thought I could love another.
