A sketch I may or may not ink. From left to right, there’s Skizzle Man, Mini Muka, and Salem Lady, the leading rebels of the Red and Gold Uprising. In the Horizons AU, all three are parrot-folk who would eventually follow Grian across the Sea of Guardians to the Land of the Sunrise, alongside the rest of the Evo crew.

Thinking about how Salem sparking an uprising against the Gods and uniting humanity under one goal is eerily familiar to Ozpins view on Ruby being a simpler more honest soul that can spark the hopes of man.
Both reading stories and being inspired to lead their lives off it. Putting their message out to the world and the people answering back. Their actions are the same but in different fonts.
Their imagery is even eerily familiar, most notable in mind being consumed by water, the cliffside/memorials, and both having parts of one of the Brothers powers within, moon symbolism, etc.
Ruby and Salem are building up to be foils of light and dark.
"Likeminded souls indeed"
Like of course Oscar is heavily implied to have a crush on Ruby. They're two characters who are a version of Oz and Salem without their history.
DING DING DING DING DING!!!! EXACTLY!!! This show is one about parallels, rhymes, and mirrors and these four are at the heart of all of it.
I also think it's really interesting that the task the GoL gives to Ozpin is to unite humanity when that's... kind of exactly what Salem did, only she was punished for it? smh. god forbid women do anything.
But anyway, I love that Ruby has taken over Oz's role in that regard. One of my favourite shots in the show that pushes this is this one from The Lost Fable. Where the line right before it says something like: "In time, (Salem) would find her adversary."
The story Jinn tells to cast is one of Ozma being setup to stop Salem, but the story the show is telling us, the audience, is that Ozma walks off screen revealing Ruby as Salem's actual adversary.
There's also some interesting allusion stuff that pushes this even further with Salem being the witch from the Two Brother's fairy tale that is killed by a silver bullet, and Ruby is a "girl who is also a gun" with silver eyes. But to talk more about the SEW stuff, I have to address the celestial symbolism you pointed out.
What you say about "foils of light and dark" is also right on the money. The way these four interact as symbols within the central plot is so poetic. We have Salem as the darkness of night, and then Ruby as the moon. Silver eyes, as Maria explains in V6, "shine like mirrors, reflecting the light of the world onto darkness". But silver eyes don't just reflect the light of the world, they reflect the desire to preserve life onto that which threatens to take it away. Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun.
Isn't it just. So. Interesting. That the person the story is telling us Ruby is most afraid to lose... is Oscar Pine... a sun coded character? So!!! Interesting!!! I'm so!!! Normal about it!!!!!!!!
By extension of this, I do think Oz is generally symbolized by Daytime. A lot of the songs seem to use "days" as a placeholder for each lifetime (or generation) as a "new day" to try again. It also works in the sense that daytime bring sunshine and his curse is what brings Oscar, this generations "sun", into the fray. Additionally, works as a perfect contrast to Salem's night and her frustration that he keeps coming back over and over again.
or tl;dr you know it's bad when i start making diagrams ooh boy
Anyway, yeah, it makes complete and utter sense why Ruby and Oscar are setup as they are with just how central they are to the main plot. This story is one about breaking cycles, so having those two have a successful version of the Ozma and Salem situation is just the most natural way for this to go.

I'm unsure what your taste is so I'm including a small summary by everything. the storygraph generally has all triggers listed in their system if you need any content heads up) Unsure if you want non fiction also but I threw a couple of my favorites on there . All of these I got on Libby or hoopla
Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix (Salem's Lot but Southern and with some very profound and insightful things about White Womanhood and public perception. Every female character is fleshed out and realistic)
I Lived On Butterfly Hill by Marjorie Agosin (A YA fictionalized memoir about a Chilean girl during Pinochet's regime) Sisters of the Lost Nation by Nick Medina (Thriller/Horror novel about an indigenous girl whose sister goes missing. One of the best things I have read this year) The Free People's Village by Sim Kern (Alternate history, what if Al Gore won the election? A fascinating look at how many of the problems we live with today are rooted deeper than simply someone else becoming president.) The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker (Set in NYC at the turn of the century, it traces how two beings from two very different religious traditions got there and how they can find a place for themselves. On personhood, the question of fate/free will as it pertains to one's inner nature, and a legitimately emotional story) Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik (Rumplestiltskin retelling with intricate worldbuilding and wonderful characters) Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle (Legitimately creepy but insightful look into heteronormativity as enforced by Evangelical upbringing. I love the way the author handles religion in general here) Lark Ascending by Silas House
(A tragedy with a happy ending. This book was one of the first things I read this year and it has stayed with me since. Cannot recommend it enough) Germinal by Emlie Zola
(One of Suzanne Collins' favorite books, it's the story of the 1890s miners strike in France.)
Soul Full of Coal Dust by Chris Hamby (A journalist's investigation into Black Lung and how it affects Appalachian communities as well as the legal fights to hold mining companies accountable for bucking safety practices and refusing to cover medical care. A harrowing read, but an important one.)
The Most They Ever Had, by Rick Bragg (Sister title to the above, this one covers the history of mill workers in the foothills of Appalachia) Black Reconstruction in America by W E B DuBois
(Long as fuck, and honestly probably best read in print, but if you have even the slightest interest in American history, this is a must read) Finally, the Unofficial Recipes of the Hunger Games, by RockRidge University Press. (Fandom Cookbooks often don't do it for me, but this cookbook is not only textually accurate but it tries the foods mentioned in the book to real-life equivalents or what ingredients may have been available as best they can and it's a legitimately engaging read with many great recipes)
You started out with one of my FAVORITE discovered authors this year, I read that + final girls support club AND how to sell a haunted house this year multiple times 10/10
If you liked that one you've gotta try Devolution by Max Brooks bc like.... Imagine if there was a Tesla village? With some big shoes to fill..... Told as if it were nonfiction post disaster
You might also like Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix which is a YA novel, historic fiction, about three teenage girls who work in and around a very specific shirtwaist factory in 1911
Everything else is stuff that's either new to me or has been only in the edges of my radar, but all sounds really cool.... I should try to snag camp Damascus tbh firstly and add the cook book to my wish list

“We cannot allow her to remain!” James Ironwood stepped up to a podium, looking around at the collection of gods and goddesses among the masses. “Its in our laws that only those who are naturally born as gods can serve as one. Never those who were created!”
“She was dying and I had to do something!” Blake stood up, looking at the god of war and famine with a gaze that could pierce anyone. “Where’s the justice in letting her die like that?!”
Ozma let out a heavy sigh as he looked around the room, listening to each of the gods argue amongst themselves. “Quiet down.” He looked over to Blake, shaking his head a bit. “You knew the rules to creating someone like us. I know that we have a vacancy with our original god of death having disappeared-”
“I didnt have a choice! If I had let her die-” Blake felt her voice leave her as a pair of blue tendrils formed out from the ground and pulled her back to her seat.
Glynda rolled her eyes, moving her fingers and letting a small, purple orb spin around them. “Blake, you know the rules. You’re lucky we’re not punishing you for this. Now, do you think you can behave?”
Blake let out a silent sigh and nodded, looking away from the other gods and goddesses.
“Good.” Glynda flicked the purple orb at Blake, watching as it went down her throat. “Now, Ozma and I know you had good intentions, but this is a serious matter. We have the rules set for a reason: we cannot allow for another uprising like before. We need to be unified.”
“But we cant just kill her,” replied Blake. “She’s a tortured soul and would know only unrest if we end her life.”
“Which is why we are only going to banish her from our realm.” Ozma stood up and created a small necklace. “She will be banished until she can assist ten generations of souls to the afterlife. As for your punishment Blake, you’ll be the one to tell her, and to give her this necklace.”
Blake’s eyes went to the necklace, a red gem hanging off a golden chain. “I… understand.”
Ozma nodded and moved the necklace to Blake’s hand. “Then this meeting is adjourned.”
Ironwood glared at Ozma. “You cannot be serious! We cant let Ruby continue existing-”
“And with Salem gone and collecting souls for her own reasons, we need another god to help save these souls. As much as I hate to admit it, we need Ruby. And this will be her chance to prove her usefulness to us.”
Ironwood huffed, folding his arms and watching Blake leave through the corner of his eye. “Then she better be worth it.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ruby fondled the necklace she wore as she waited for a bus in the pouring rain. The gem no longer shined brightly, dimming with every soul she moved from the mortal realm to the afterlife. She let out a sigh, keeping her eyes watching the street. “I thought I told you that you cant stay here with me.”
“Maybe I want to see how you’ve been surviving down here.” Blake walked over to Ruby, keeping an umbrella over her. “Besides, they never said I wasnt allowed to visit.”
“Visiting is one thing, but this…” Ruby shook her head. “If you’re going to stick around, then you’re going to have to follow some rules.”
“And they are?”
“First, don't use any of your powers. I still live with humans and they arent ready to understand that gods and what they call magic actually exist.”
Blake gave a small nod. “I can do that.”
“Second, I live with a few… troubled people. So I need you to understand that they may do or say things that normally would invoke your wrath and I need you to let it slide.”
“I… cant make any promises on that.”
Ruby let out another sigh. “And third, no matter what anyone says to me, I need you to let me deal with it myself.”
Blake cocked her head to the side for a moment. “I’m not sure I understand what you mean.”
“The owner of the place I’m living at isnt exactly… friendly. And I dont need your protection.”
Blake let out a small sigh. “Fine. But if anyone hurts you-”
“That includes if anyone hurts me,” interrupted Ruby as the bus finally arrived. “Just… stick close and follow my lead please.”
Blake nodded and followed Ruby onto the, watching as she paid the driver. The bus started moving just as she found a place to sit, looking through the window and watching the buildings pass by. It wasnt often she made her way down to the mortal realm, usually observing through whatever means she could. Cats, crystal balls, pools of water… but none of it gave her the same experience as being here.
Ruby quietly put her headphones on, tapping her foot to the music that played. A sad smile crept across her face as she listened to the voice of an old friend that had died many years before. It was still the one thing she hated about this life: all she could do was watch those that she cared about move on with their lives without her, and eventually, she would guide them all to the afterlife.
Blake slowly tapped Ruby’s shoulder, starting to look concerned. “Is… everything alright?”
Ruby slowly moved her headphones off and nodded. “Y-yeah, everything’s fine. Just… listening to an old friend.” She smiled a bit, wiping her tear away. “Its been… strange watching those I become friends with grow old and eventually helping them to the afterlife. This one was a woman who went by Tock. Strange woman, but I cant say I didnt like being around her.”
“Why get close to anyone if you’re going to outlive them? That would make things easier, wouldnt it?”
“Easier, but lonely.” Ruby looked out the window, grabbing her bag. “Alright, we’re almost back to my place.”
Blake nodded and followed Ruby off the bus, pausing when she saw they were stopped at an old building that looked like it desperately needed repairs. “This… is where you live?”
Ruby nodded. “For the last ten years now.”
“But you’re a god. Shouldnt you be living somewhere a bit… better?”
“Unfortunately, the mortal realm requires money for that. And unfortunately, if I dont want to draw attention to myself, having a bank account and leaving it isnt exactly the best option for me.”
Blake dropped it as she followed Ruby inside the building, looking around. As far as she could tell, the inside looked better than the out: the walls didint look like they were going to crumble, the paint looked a couple years old, and the carpet seemed to be freshly replaced. “This… seems a bit better…”
“It’s really not as bad as it seems, once you get used to it.” Ruby slowly unlocked the door and opened it, immediately getting hit with a couple pillows being tossed at her.
“You’re late,” replied a redhead as she walked over to the door. “Which means you better avoid Emerald until she calms down.”
Ruby rubbed the back of her head. “S-sorry about that, Nora. Work ran a bit late and I met up with an old friend for a bit.” She stepped inside, setting her bag down. “Besides, Emerald will get over me being late-”
“You know she’ll hold this over you until you can make it up to her.” Another girl walked downstairs, smirking at Ruby. Her gold eyes glistened in the light as she moved a few strands of hair out of her eyes. “Who’s that?”
“Oh, right, I forgot to do that.” Ruby smiled and took Blake’s hand. “Nora, Cinder, I want you to meet Blake. Blake, meet Nora and Cinder.”
The redhead, Nora, walked over to Blake and looked her over. “She’s not one of us, is she?”
“One of… you?” Blake leaned over to Ruby and whispered into her ear. “What does she mean by that?”
Ruby sighed as she watched Cinder grab an apple and start peeling with a knife she had never owned before. “Remember how I told you I lived with a few troubled people?”
“Yes, I remember that.”
“They’re… thieves.”
Blake frowned, immediately engulfing the room in a flash of light and leaving a couple coins where Nora and Cinder were standing.
Ruby pinched the bridge of her nose, groaning. “This… is going to be a rough night…”

Thoughts on RWBY Vol. 7
Quarantine day 20: I finally force myself to re watch volume 7 instead of doing my French homework.
Spoilers ahead for RWBY and How I Met Your Mother (yes).
Volume 7: The Story of a Broken Narrative Kingdom
The day has come where I finally sit down and watch the whole season again. Some of you wondered why I didn’t simply do a The Good, The Bad, and The Dirty review on the last episode of the volume like I did with the previous ones. The answer is the same reason why Ozpin’s speech at the end of the volume encapsulates the volume’s theme as a whole: finales affect the way you look at shows, comics, movies, and books. It provides a framing.
Did any of you watch How I Met Your Mother? For those of you who didn’t, it was a often called the show “which could replace Friends”. Something that you may not know is that fans of the show renamed it something among the lines of “How I should date your Aunt Robin” after the last episode aired. You see, the ending of the show changed the way most viewers see the show in the present.
The show had main character Ted Mosby narrate to his children how he met their mother. However, the story doesn’t begin during the day that encountered happen; no, it starts years before, when Ted declares he wants to settle down and find the love of his life. In that very same episode, he meets Robin Scherbatsky. In the end it’s revealed that the mother (the character we spent years speculating about) is dead (which I expected), and Ted asks his children if they give him the blessing to date their Aunt Robin. Originally, the fans could excuse episode 1 centering around Robin because it was the instance where Ted decided he wanted to settle down, but after the veil was lifted; there were no excuses, this whole story was a Ted’s way of convincing their children he should marry Robin, the main woman in his life during the whole show (even if we spend the last season on her wedding with one of Ted’s best friends).
Perhaps the ending of Volume 7 didn’t destroy the character development of 3 main characters, but it drastically changed the way I felt about the volume.
“The Kingdom of Atlas will remain safe, that’s my promise”- James Ironwood, Volume 7, Episode 1.
If you go back in my blog and read my reviews for most of the volume, you will find glowing ratings and stars. Anyone that knows me, knows that I love a good politics game in the shows/stories I read, so I was really excited when the writing team started developing that during the first half of the season.
Our gang (RWBY+JNOR+Q+M) reach Atlas after finding out that Oz is a fraud, that Salem cannot be beat (by Oz), and that Cinder almost took another maiden’s power. They quickly realize that Atlas is in a state of chaos and Ironwood is consumed by fear taking authoritarian measures, which keep the kingdom divided.
The stage is set:
Ironwood, Winter, and the Ace Ops.
Robyn, the Happy Huntresses, and Mantle.
Watts, Jacques, and Tyrian.
I thought the way everything was set was fantastic, I loved the political drama, and I thought the writers were taking their time properly. Even now I give huge kudos to the Schnee storyline, which is my favorite. The volume showed us how flawed Winter’s coping mechanism is, how Weiss is still susceptible to her father’s gaslighting and manipulation, and how the household isn’t just broken by Jacques (Willow apologists, pls read this).
However, the cracks started showing during the first episodes and I noted that on my reviews. We have characters used for exposition dump: from the Robyn supporter, that explains what we could’ve learned by the normal progression of the story, who gets killed as soon as he returns home, and other characters like Maria talking about Pietro while he’s standing right there.
In contrast to that, we get wonderful montages which show the passage of time. The kids interact with one another and the Ace Ops, they train, they help with Ironwood’s plan. It seems weird to have 2 different tools one after the other.
Also, it it weird for anyone that Qrow and Winter only interact 1 time during episode 2 when in Volume 3 a clear rivalry was established? Winter’s storyline was supposed to follow Penny’s, while Qrow was supposed to grow attached to Clover. Because these 2 characters had to reach a certain point in the story, they are not allowed to deviate from the interactions needed for the plot to advance.
Another thing occurred to me while re-watching the season again... Why is Ironwood so fixated in protecting Atlas when it’s floating in the air away from Grimm? Yes, we know that some Grimm can fly, but by the many times we see Mantle in chaos, you would think Ironwood would repair Mantle’s wall to keep it safe?
That’s the theme, guys, girls and nonbinary folks: a kingdom divided.
Just like the Atlas kingdom falls apart, the narrative of Volume 7 has a specific breaking point that marks the decline in quality (you can see that in my reviews). The moment everything went downhill starts in Episode 8, with the dinner at the Schnee Manor.
We spend much time developing the political tensions of the volume for Jacques to be promptly arrested and taken away from the scene in a second.
While Ironwood, Winter, Penny, and Clover are shown doing plot relevant stuff, team JNOR does that ridiculous gag to get Whitley out of Weiss’s hair. The rest of the team do jackshit, and we don’t hear anything from them until everything is over. Again, the writers reached the plot point and forgot about everything else.
Also, Ruby looks sadly at Weiss when Whitley mentions that Klein was “let go”, yet Weiss has never talked about him to Ruby on screen. Claiming Weiss could’ve done that off screen strips away the possibilities of Weiss bonding with Ruby the same way she did with Yang when talking about their pain during Volume 5.
Such a large table, and only 4 council members, isn’t that kind of stupid? I mean, if Ironwood had 2 seats, numbers wise it makes sense, but who are those other 2 supposed to represent? Why haven’t we seen them before?
Robyn is told by Yang and Blake that Ironwood doesn't know who to trust. She proceeds to pressure him in front of people he clearly doesn’t trust. This is the first instance of OOC Robyn.
The walls crumbled, and everything became obvious as a viewer. Some other notable flaws:
Tension jojoing. The people in mantle will revolt! Except they aren’t. This happens in Episode 5, 6, and 9. The only real uprising is the last one. The other two were silly cliff hangers that make no sense when you watch the show again. (they didn’t make sense before either and I complained).
Hey there, Watts! You may have an interesting backstory, except it’s only implied you are pissed off Penny got chosen as a major project instead of whatever yours was. Also, Paladin incident? What? If he is the main villain of the Volume, why not expand on him? I shouldn’t be surprised, Hazel and Tyrian are not that complex. And Cinder? It’s been 5 volumes and we barely know anything about her haha.
Robin! I love how civilized and smart you are when the volume started, choosing to observe and talk instead of acting against the main characters. How awful is it that you forget to keep your calm when a Serial killer is on the loose. It would be a shame if someone were to... die.
I already gave my 2 cents over Clover’s death, and I’m not going to repeat myself. I am sorry to all the Fair Game fans, I’m afraid bury your gays is till alive and well.
The nail on the coffin is the final episode: after making a speech about how Salem wants to divide people and how the only way to go is to remain united, James does the exact opposite thing the moment something doesn’t go according to plan. Don’t get me wrong, his PTSD regarding the queen chess piece was foreshadowed, but the moment team RWBY offer an explanation and identify the person behind it, he’s to far gone. Then, Salem shows up, and goes for Team RWBY when Ruby gets under her skin. This shows that Salem has a weakness and that Team RWBY can be trusted when it comes to defeating her, yet that is promptly ignored.
Also, Ironwood might be hurt about Yang and Blake talking to Robyn, but after everything, they were proven right: Robyn is to be trusted, Ironwood was making a mistake.
The whole setting up a trap to attract Tyrian wasn’t Ironwood going “mad with power” or something. Robyn knew he has lying and allowed Ironwood to catch someone who could hack everything. Not only that, but the camera zoomed in on Ironwood, so nobody could see Robyn’s handy Semblance going red. Or... maybe I’m looking too much into it and the writers expected you to forget.
Sorry, I guess James Ironwood had to take a bunch of stupid pills.
“I wish it didn’t have to end this way.” - Clover Ebi.
“It doesn’t have to, but the writers need that Branwen angst.” - Qrow Branwen.
Volume 7: Part 1 of the Atlas Arc
Have you ever heard of Checov’s gun? It is a dramatic principle that states that every element in a story must be necessary, and irrelevant elements should be removed. Elements should not appear to make "false promises" by never coming into play. Let’s play a game called the false promises of the volume that may carry over to volume 8?
Renora: Nora sides with Robin, Ren sides with Ironwood. They do not communicate with one another and the tension builds throughout the volume. They kiss, nothing gets resolved. Ren cries when Neo turns into Nora.
Training: Ren is shown to throw himself into the enemy as a flaw, he repeats the same mistake when fighting with Neo. Oscar’s Semblance is questioned, nothing comes out of it. Ruby’s Semblance is questioned, nothing comes out of it.
Cinder got beef with Atlas? For some reason, Cinder talks about Atlas hoarding power when speaking with Winter. Bitch, where the fuck do you come from? Who are you? Do I know you? Sorry, the writers forgot to write a growth arc for you. My bad.
Nora, daughter of Atlas? Can someone explain to me why she became a SWJ (/s) during this season? We never get a backstory of her previous to Kuroyuri and for some reason Nora is super attached to the people of Mantle. The daughter of Atlas title was thrown around, why?
It’s so nice to see tea FNKI back! Too bad they are there for 5 minutes and never show up again, not even when Mantle is supposed to be defended by all huntsmen. I guess this was fan service.
What’s the purpose of the Happy Huntresses? Isn’t it funny how the only one who got wounded by Tyrian is the only character who could see in the dark, but didn’t tell Robin that Penny wasn’t guilty? Hi Fiona, I don’t know why you exist.
Marrow: the butt of the joke. Since the first episodes, Marrow is shown as the outsider inside the Ace Ops: his teammates don’t take him seriously, Ironwood doesn’t think Marrow is up to the challenge of some missions, and he’s the only Faunus, the only one that seemed to sympathize with Robyn at the end. Too bad he wasn’t allowed to break his mold.
The World Building looks pretty, but it doesn't play the part.
I have to praise the art direction of this season. I was blown away by the aesthetics of Mantle clashing with Atlas, the details in the backgrounds, the world building by back messaging, screens, and posters. My favorite scene of the volume is the penguins in the tundra.
However, you have to walk the walk, and the writing team failed to deliver.
Racism: hey, I know you guys kinda messed up the White Fang’s internal struggles and opportunity to expand on Adam’s power grab and Sienna’s leadership, but maybe don’t skip the racist elements of Atlas? All we get are Faunus mine workers looking angry, that drunk dude who yelled at Blake and Marrow making a simplistic comment about politics. What...? What’s the point of acknowledging u are bad at writing racism and then do nothing about it? Did none of the new writers know how to tackle this?
In-World Continuity: Hey, wasn't the Vytal festival broadcasted to the entire world? When I saw that camera focusing on Yang on episode 1, I thought there would be a call back to what everyone saw her do during the finals, but nope. Let’s not bring that up again. ever. The only important thing about the Vytal Festival is the tower, move on.
Weapons upgrade: We were told that weapons were an extension of each huntsmen; too bad none of our gang actually work on them. Pietro makes all the modifications and repairs. I remember the bumblebee fans eager for a scene of Blake repairing Gambol Shroud, don’t tell me you’re not disappointed.
Atlas ball: not found. Hey! We have Jacques Schnee celebrating his fake victory on the elections! It would be a perfect moment to showcase the disconnect between what’s happening in Mantle and what the people in atlas thing. Too bad we didn’t wanna make extra character models.
--
Closing thoughts
I wanted to re watch the whole season again to see if the bitterness left on my lips after watching that chaotic finale went away, but it only grew. There are so many character choices that made no sense, so many scenes where characters stood around in the background doing nothing.
WHY THE FUCK DID OZPIN ONLY APPEAR AT THE END?
Oh, I’ll tell you why: he needed to give a speech about themes to justify the stupidity that happened during the last episodes to get to that cliff hanger.
I am disappointed in volume that seemed to be doing so good at the begging, but hey... at this point we shouldn’t be surprised, should we? Interestingly enough, the people who dreamed about the ball and the scenes of Blake fixing Gambol Shroud grew quiet after the episodes aired...
Almost as if criticism wasn’t allowed on the RWBY tag.
AN: The titty window isn’t justified Salem, your ex is now a child that’s PEDO—

Lasting Embers pt30 Finale:What comes next
[Jaune’s House]
Jaune:*opens door* Finally home! Gosh it feels like we’ve been gone forever but it’s only been a few hours. Yujin what do you want for- *turns around* lunch?
Yujin:*face down on the couch* I’m not hungry. *sniff*
Jaune:But you haven’t eaten today. *sits next to her*You okay?
Yujin:Yeah, I’m fun; for once I’m crying happy tears. Things worked out fine. For once I feel....calm.
Jaune:I’m glad to hear it sweetie. Seeing you hurt was killing.
Yujin:*grabs hand* Thanks for tolerating me through all this. I know I didn’t make this week easy on you; not to mention the entire thirteen days she was here.
Jaune:It wasn’t all bad and I didn’t think you were a problem. Honestly I’m sorry for not helping you through this m- *pulled down*
Yujin:*hugging him* None of that! The time for being bummed is over! You’re wonderful, sweet, kind, and I’m grateful for you.
Jaune:Hehe, it’s been forever since you hugged me like this. I kinda miss them.
Yujin:*pulls out journal* Well from what I’ve read so far about myself, two year old me hugged you a lot. Also we took naps on the couch.
Jaune:Trying to recreate simpler times?
Yujin:Nah, just cherishing the people I have......around.....
Those words cut through the haze of her promise to Nora that almost slipped her mind. Suddenly her heart starts to weigh heavy as things are put into perspective.
Jaune:Yujin?
Yujin:Dad.....I’ve always had you around. Not just you but Gramdma and Gramps. Adam’s been around more than he’s had to be as well; sure I’ve felt lonely but was never alone. Right now though....I bet Tenzen is feeling real loneliness. He never brought it up though; all he did was help me.
Jaune:..........
Jaune:Wanna go back to Vale?
Yujin:*nods* By myself though; can you make lunch for three while I’m gone?
Jaune:*smiles* Not a problem.
[Vale]
Tenzen:*watching old dance videos*........
*knock knock knock*
Yujin:Tenzen? Are you home? *opening door* Sorry to let myself in but your mom gave me a-
She was at a lost for words. For as long as she’s known her best friend she’d think that he had nothing else to surprise her with. Yujin was wrong though; it dawned on her that there’s plenty she hasn’t seen him do. Crying was one of these things but not anymore. The sight of it once however was enough for to know she never wanted to see it again. Without another thought she rushes to his side and holds him close.
Tenzen:Gotta hand it to you Jin, I was knew you were strong but living without knowing how a parent is doing? It has only been a few hours and it’s already torture.
Yujin:Don’t worry, it’ll get easier. You’ll have me just like I’ve had you. Not just that but my dad even thinks you should stay with us until you head to Beacon.
Tenzen:I’m not going......
Yujin:Huh?
Tenzen:I’m not going to take the exam this time around. Too much has happened for me to focus. Besides, what’s the point if you’re going to wait a year? Going without you doesn’t feel right *holds her tighter* honestly nothing without you feels right.
Yujin:*red*........You should know better to say things like that after recent events. Don’t get a girl’s hopes up; especially when you’re a flirt. Can we just...deal with all that stuff when everything feels less....complicated? *chuckles*
Tenzen:*chuckles* My bad guess I’m a little emotional.
Yujin:I know how that feels. Well Beacon or not, you’re living with us now. Think of it as training for dorm room life. Next year we’ll blow everyone out of the water.
Tenzen:That.....sounds wonderful.
Yujin:Let’s go home. From now on we’ll stop looking back and-

Jael:*staring at the water*
Blake:Looks like she’s gotten her sea legs.
Jacquelyn:I’m sure her mind is just busy with other things to care. She hasn’t said a word since we left. I know I should probably give her space but.....sigh who knows what she’s thinking.
Sun:Blake and I can talk to her.
Blake:What? I’m not sure if- *dragged over* wait! Sun!!!
Sun:Hey kiddo, getting used to the ocean?
Jael:Not really......it still makes me bad. Can’t really tell though since I was already feeling pretty awful. It’s not about my father either.
Blake:Really? What’s on your mind then.
Jael....*turns around* Can you two train me fight?
Blake:What?
Sun:I’m with her, what?
Jael:Dad isn’t here to train me anymore and frankly both mom and sis tend to hold back. *holds chest* I know it’s practically impossible to surpass my physical limitations, even so I want to try. Beacon is going to be the hardest challenge I ever faced; I need every advantage if I’m going to keep up with the rest. So....*bows* I’d be honored if I could learn from both High Leaders!
Sun:*eyes widened* Hey what’s with the bowing!? We’re all family here; can’t speak for Blake but I’ll help train you.
Jael:Thank you! *looks at Blake* what about you?
Blake:I mean I’ll busy now that I’m taking over full time. Not to mention I never mentored someone before....
Sun:Aw come on. The Benevolent Shadow, Blake Belladonna herself is nervous of having a student? I’m sure it’s easier than leading an organization. Besides, you got me to help!
Sienna:Vacou’s favorite son.....
Ilia:The Ray of Hope.....
Jacquelyn:Fourth High Leader in history and second High Leader of The Guiding Light....
Jael:Creator of the Sinister Shadow organization....
Everyone:*points at Blake* finish it off!
Blake:*red*........My husband, Sun Wukong.
Sun:That’s me!!! You know I always got your back. *extends hand* we can totally be mentors.
Blake:*smiles* I guess I could give it a-
Jael:Sweet! Can’t wait to show you what I’m made of.
To Blake’s surprise, the young girl literally went sky high with excitement; floating above the ship with her arms casually folded. It’s almost like she was on a sky hammock.
Jacquelyn:Thank you for that.
Sun:No problem! Who knows, we could be training the next High Leader.
Blake:Or the next leader of an uprising....Sorry to be so negative but at the train station-
Jacquelyn:I felt it too...... I don’t want to believe my daughter will go down the exact same path of her father but I’m not naive enough to think she’s growing up perfectly. Jael is only fifteen though; hopefully it’s just teen angst. Watch her closely please?
Blake:Of course, Jael has the benefit of having grateful people around her. It takes a village right?
Jael:*staring at clouds*(Just you watch dad, I’m gonna show the world just how impressive it is being your kid. I promise I’ll-)
[Location Unknown]
Somewhere in Remnant near Salem’s old territories Ruby and the gang lay in wait on a rock pillar just big enough for all of them. It’s nighttime and rain is pouring down on them with thunder roaring through the area at a deafening rate. Each of the battled hardened heroes stare into the distance as a massive wave of black, red, and white approaches from the ground and sky. Grimm and cultist slowly make their way step by step with only the thought of complete destruction on their mind.
Adam:I think your planned worked Ruby. This better be all the bases coming at us or I think I might lose it.
Yang:Even if it is we still have to visit each one to make sure. No stone is being left unturned.
Weiss:Ruby I’ve followed a lot of your crazy plans through the years.
Ruby:.....But?
Weiss:No that was it. This one is up there but not the craziest.
Ruby:To be fair, Adam helped make this plan.
Adam:We all don’t want to be away from home for an indefinite amount of years so why not lure them to us? We’ll carve chunks out of their group piece by piece.
Raven:*eyes glowing* This enough rain? The grounds pretty soaked.
Weiss:It’s perfect; might want to easy it up a little just so we can see.
Nora:Your sword charged or do I need to hit again?
Adam:It’s fine *glowing red* and not a moment too soon; they’re within range.
Ruby:Everyone perfectly clear with the plan? I’ve said it for months but I gotta make sure.
Yang:We got the timing down no problem.
Weiss:You better have it down packed. Freezer burn with a ten second delay after I land and then another ten seconds when you fight.
Yang:I know how to count Weiss, my grades were overall higher than yours.
Weiss:If we live through this I’m taking you down a peg for that.
Adam:Stay within three feet of Yang or I might get zapped?
Raven and Nora:Yep..... *channeling lightning*
Adam:*inhales*.....got it......
Ruby:Alright everyone, let’s kick some ass. *flies up into clouds* 1...2...3...4...5...*closes eyes*
Raven:1...2...3...*fires lightning ball*
Nora:1...2...3...*fires lightning ball*
Weiss:1...2...3...4...5...6...7 *launches off a glyph*
Yang:......1-
Adam:After she lands.
Yang:I know I was just messing around hehe
Cult Master:Are we sure they’re here?
Cult Thug:Yes master Seymour. The trail lead this way.
Seymour:Then where the hell are they!? They’ll pay for the murder of my son Jericho and his entire-
He couldn’t get the rest of threat out. Before he got the chance the dual lightning attacks fond their way to the soaked ground and stunning anything on the ground as the electricity jumped from cult member to grimm alike. As it faded Weiss came slamming down on the ground with her sword stabbed into it. A thin sheet of instantaneously spread for miles thanks to the rain. Now all enemies stood immobile as their feet became trapped.
Seymour:What the hell is this!? A giant ice rink!?
Weiss:Close, it’s a mirror.....*looks up* you know what those can do right?
Seymour:*looks up* Oh no......
Ruby:*eyes glowing and staring at her reflection* Say cheese.....
Her silver eyes activate and bounce off the icy surface. The world itself seems to go completely white as everything becomes blinding for a moment. When it clears, cult members still standing are left in complete shock and pain as the sea of grimm they controlled now is crippled severely. Stone and smoke now make the land seem like forgotten ruins. Seymour quickly reaches for Weiss but is blown back by an intense wave of steam;Yang landed right on time.
Weiss:*Running away* (Alright, time for phase 2. Give me a little time you guys.)
Cult thugs:Damn! We can’t see!!!!
Seymour:*spots glowing light* The light is the brawlers hair! WIPE HER OUT!
Yang:*punches thug* 6...7...8...9...*jumps up high* 10!
A portal from Raven appears but out of it comes a massive horizontal moon slice that sweeps the area. Adam proceeds to jump through and gets back to back with Yang.
Yang:I’ll be honest, I was waiting for a betrayal or something.
Adam:I’ve known about your family for years. Why would I wait until now?
Yang:I don’t know, shock and awe?
Adam:*chuckles* and people think I’m paranoid. On your left....
Yang:*blocks an arrow* Thanks.....*shoots flare* I thought more would survive the attack.
Adam:Well they migh be more in the back. This fog doesn’t do us too many favors.
Yang:It’s buying us time. Just stay close and- Right!!!
An Ursa comes rushing at them with its jaw wide opened. Before it reaches them though a pink lightning bolt strikes it down instantly.
Nora:I really hope I didn’t hit them. All I can see from here is a bright light.
Raven:Just keep the strikes three feet away. I’ll handle the Nevermores. You get more accurate hits if you-
Nora:*strikes hundreds of grimm with one bolt* Hehehe
Raven:.....That works too.
Seymour:Agh, this is a set up! Status report!!!!
Cult Hunter:We’re scattered and losing ground fast! What are your orders?
Seymour:Crap......the dragon should be here shortly. Just in case though, go back to head quarters and tell them about this situation.
Cult Hunter:You sure that’s a good idea? It could be breached as well.
Seymour:We would’ve heard it was. Mountain Glenn is too massive just for anyone to search through. Jumps-Agh! *looks down* what?
A bloody sickle forces it’s way through the mans stomach. His vision starts to blur as he falls to his. The image of the young huntsman fades away slowly; turning into a woman with dark skin and green hair. Her eyes dancing with satisfaction at her accomplishment.
Seymour:How......? Our intel said-
Emerald:Thieves and mercenaries know how to make you think what we want you to think. Didn’t get the chance to properly pay your son Jericho back; I wouldn’t miss this for the world. This more than makes up for it. Mountain Glenn was it? *grabs scroll* You guys get that?
Mercury:*in an airship* Crystal..... we’ll scope it out.
Ren:See all of you there.
Seymour:All of you.....are still....gonna die....
Emerald:You’re still alive huh? About to curse me with your dying breath?
Seymour:You’re not worth it.....you might cut us down but.....no way you all will survive. The proof.......is in the sky.
Emerald:*looks in the distance* Sigh....you said dragon, not dragons.
Three heavily armored dragons make their way over at alarming speed. Each one bigger than the one at Beacon. Their screams shake the area.
Yang:Oh I know that sound.
Adam:Think we can take them?
Yang:I mean I’m kinda a dragon myself you know?
Adam:.......
Yang:Sorry.....a little nervous. *grabs scroll* Ruby, please tell me Weiss is ready?
Ruby:*smirking* You think you’re ready Weiss?
Weiss:Yeah.....
Seymour:Your fate is-*starts shivering* c...cold!?
A gust of cold air pushes the fog away. All humans on the battle field slowly stop as their breath becomes visible and a shadow looms over them. All cultists drop their weapons in disbelief at the sight of their enemies standing under their own dragon of Weiss’s creation; complete with it spawning it’s own grimm. The huntress herself stands on its head proudly and with an ice tiara for nothing other than to show off.
Weiss:I think I’m ready.
Seymour:........ *clenches teeth*
Emerald:Don’t feel bad. Plenty have tried to keep these people down; me including. That’s the thing about people like them, they do their best work when all seems lost. Cinder learned the hard way; Salem learned the hard way. *points out gun* Now you do too....
bang!!
Many grimm start to slow down and lose the mind control either running away or staying; enticed by the fear of the numerous cult members why now are drastically caught off guard.
Yang:What’s wrong!? Not gonna make the first move!? *cracks knuckles*
Adam:We’re more than happy to. Should’ve known you were in hot water when you us two on the same side.
Yang:Just say the word Ruby.
Ruby:*smiling* The honor is all yours sis.
Yang:*eyes glow* All right everyone, phase 3-

* taps mic * so, uh, is this thing on ? hello ! my name’s stevie, i’m twenty ( she/they pns, please ) and i’m writing out of aest ! [ bill hader vc ] i like true crime and pretending like i don’t have a million things to do outside of writing ! anyways ! under the cut you’ll find information about francesca ramorini, ezra kennedy and percy frazer ! u know the drill, like this & i’ll pop into your ims either here or on disc.ord to plot !
francesca magdalene ramorini. vampire. old.
full name: francesca magdalene ramorini. physical age: thirty-one. real age: six hundred and seventy seven. birthplace: milan, italy. birthdate: january sixth, 1342. nationality: italian. species: vampire. gender identity: cis female, she/her pronouns. sexuality: bisexual.
when i say she’s old, i mean old. francesca and her brother, domenico, are from 13th century milan, where their family were originally some of the most prolific hunters in italy. the ramorinis had been vampire hunters for years previous, but it was their parents who had really cemented the reputation as some of the best. the ramorinis were a big name in milan anyway, just because of how ridiculously wealthy they were. these guys are fucking loaded. they were very much the apex predator in the milani aristocracy at the time. naturally, the whole ‘we’re a bunch of vampire hunters’ thing is very hidden, concealed under the family’s reputation as the owners of what feels like an impossibly large international bank that funded chunks of the holy roman empire. with all that in mind, francesca grows up with absolutely nothing but opulence, and their parents really allow her to grow into her own woman --- strong, determined, with a mind for both family trades. there was never any chance of her just sitting round and being complacent in the predetermination of her life ; she’s always been headstrong, brave, intelligent and opinionated, too loud for her own good, a face to turn heads.
they have a younger brother, too, fredo. ( the name is very significant. ) as dom and francesca started to learn to hunt themselves, they’d often end up with fred tagging along, and for the most part that was fine. fred’s a bit of a weirdo, but having them around wasn’t so bad --- until one particular hunt. really, it’s no one’s fault ( despite a centuries-long running joke that it was fred that got them there in the first place ) ; it’s a case of wrong place, wrong time. anyways, francesca and dom were turned on that particular hunt and their entire world just kinda spun out, tbh. they were so accustomed to seeing vampires and whatnot as the absolute enemy, nothing more than a scourge to be wiped out --- but now they were part of that scourge.
francesca especially had a hard time dealing with the transition. everything she knew was flipped on its head, a life she once looked forward to reveling in lost in the blink of an eye, the sink of a fang. the transition isn’t easy, but she shoulders it regardless because it’s just part of life now. she gives up the life she was meant to have and forges a new one --- and she thinks she’ll hate it, but it turns out to be oddly freeing. she takes up art, learns to paint and sculpt from some of the greatest ; she learns more than she ever could as an aristocrat, becomes rather chameleonic about it all.
so, anyways ! she and dom are in louisiana now, in this massive fucking mansion that they wrangled ; francesca moonlights as any number of different jobs. she teaches a late - night art class, runs an adult ballet class ( she danced with fonteyn in the 40s ) --- she’s become incredibly comfortable in the life she’s built. falling into it all was easier than she ever imagined it could be.
anyways, fun facts:
she dresses so goddamn well. she looks good literally all the time, and she fuckin KNOWS it / francesca honey stop wearing expensive tailored suits everywhere ur going to make men insecure
won’t ever shut up about emily dickinson or georgia o’keeffe........ #ma’am ur crush is loud and painful
the hot aunt aunt at the dinner party who simultaneously judges ur decisions and encourages them
yet another ramorini casanova ... are we surprised yet ( no )
ezra riley kennedy. hunter. twenty - one.
full name: ezra riley kennedy. physical age: twenty-one. birthplace: hoboken, new jersey. birthdate: july ninth, 1998. nationality: american. species: human. gender identity: non-binary, they/them pronouns. sexuality: pansexual.
i need it known right fockin now that i would literally die for ezra . they’re my FUCKING baby and i won’t shut up about it
ezra was born to two former hunters who gave up the minute they were pregnant. it wasn’t a choice they were particularly willing to make, and despite swearing that they’d stop after having kids they never really did. almost immediately after ezra was born their parents were back out hunting again, leaving the baby with their grandparents. as such, ezra’s raised entirely by their maternal grandparents. they simultaneously teach them their family history ( an extensive hunting background, the expectations that sit heavy on their shoulders. ezra’s expected to carry on the family legacy the minute they turn eighteen, to learn how to hunt and kill. admittedly, it’s a shock to the system.
they’re not in much contact with their parents. they come home every so often, greet their kid and go straight to sleep. there’s very little real interaction / gets to the point where ezra thinks of them more as irritating roommates that come home late and eat everything than actual parents. their loyalty is to their grandparents, without a doubt.
ezra’s keenly aware that they’ve got no choice in their career, but they can’t help but want some kind of say in it. they excel at stem subjects in school, more often found in science labs testing hypotheses in their free time than anywhere else. they’re left alone more often than not, slipping through school without much of a problem until they’re sixteen and their parents die in the middle of a hunt. it’s a rude shock to the system, having to bury both parents at such a young age but they do it with tremendous grace and class. shortly after the funeral, they drop out of school to start hunting.
they’re jaded going into it, definitely. their only real image of hunters is the one they were handed by their parents --- of dark circles under eyes, chain smoking, swallowing bourbon like water, passing out, rinse and repeat. they’re determined to break that mold, to do something different but they won’t lie, they considered it at first. for their first few hunts they tried to imitate their parents, and it didn’t turn out well --- so, like everything else, ezra fits it to themself, and the rest is history. they develop their own style, and it works.
hoboken is too small, not enough for them so they pack up and move off to louisiana. ( they’d found an old journal of their parents’, with notes alluding to a wish to move to new orleans and despite not being close they figured it might be a good idea. ) they’ve been in nola for about a year now, and they’re growing to love it. they’ve always been a city kid, and there’s something about nola just speaks to them.
so, fun facts:
super good with technology. they fix shit in their free time, & they build computers n shit ?????
smells like frangipani and jasmine and ginger. they smell really fucking good for some reason
lots of denim and leather and yellow in their outfits. they’ve got one particular leather jacket for hunting, but they kinda started a collection
angelic in every single way possible
has a black cat, named salem. salem’s a good cat.
percy floyd frazer. witch. twenty - four.
full name: percy floyd frazer. physical age: twenty-four. birthplace: amsterdam, the netherlands. birthdate: february 12th, 1995. nationality: british. species: witch. gender identity: demi male, he/they pronouns. sexuality: bisexual.
percy ....... sighs. i love him so fuckin much
so ! percy is born to two english witches while they’re on holiday in amsterdam, a pregnancy that both parties had been hoping for ; their household was starting to feel awfully lonely, and a baby sounded like the perfect way to round it all out. naturally, though, nothing goes to plan --- his arrival puts ‘unwarranted stress’ on his dad, who cuts his losses and runs about a month after percy’s birth. bit of a dick move, but let’s move on. his mother, annaliese, doesn’t harbour any real resentment towards his dad for leaving ; she’d fallen in love with amsterdam on their brief holiday and was planning on breaking up and moving there anyway.
so ! for his entire childhood, it’s just percy and his mom, and it’s the best kind of childhood you could ask for. he grows up watching all the same movies as his mom, reading her books and just hanging around her 24/7. ngl he kinda had the coolest childhood ???? his mom loved to rent out her favourite bands’ old tour videos and there’s many an afternoon where the two of them would sit there and just listen to music together. their relationship is very similar to that of theo and his mother from the goldfinch, if that gives anyone a frame of reference.
he’s about thirteen when she finally sits him down, tells him about the magic that whispers a steady thrum in his veins. she tells him about the uprising, about the way magic has become outlawed, how he has to learn to restrain himself. it’s a lot for someone so young to understand, but he sits through it patiently, peppering questions here and there. he doesn’t seem particularly enthused about his heritage ( really, who would ) --- his mother barely holds back the tremor in her voice throughout the conversation.
the more percy learns about the restriction of magic, the more bitter and jaded he grows about it all. he doesn’t hate himself, nor his mother, hates the pureblood monarchy with such a passion it’s almost terrifying. he’s sixteen when he swears off magic, tries to quash it down the best he can. he point - blank refuses to accept that it’s part of him, and tries to find a passion that distracts him from it. that ends up being music, and he takes to it like a fish takes to water. the minute he picks up a guitar, it’s like his world makes sense.
they’ve been living in amsterdam this entire time, wasting afternoons in art galleries and bakeries. percy’s eighteen when he decides that it’s time to spread his wings and move away --- his decision is hardly precise, he throws a dart at a map and hopes for the best. it lands on new orleans, louisiana, and he just kinda goes with it. he doesn’t have much to pack up: a single suitcase full of clothes, another filled with books and dvds, and his guitars, that’s it. both him and his mom cry at the airport, but it’s happy crying.
so, anyways ! he’s been in louisiana for six years now, and he loves it. when he first moved he worked any number of casual jobs, but he’s settled into one as a bookseller in an indie bookshop. he writes film + music reviews for a number of online sites as well, so he’s got himself a steady lil income.
some fun facts:
dresses like an utter e-boy and i won’t apologise for it
looks n acts like an arrogant prick sometimes but truly....... sweet, kind, would do anything for the people he loves ( even if that number is small )
totally pretentious about his tastes. don’t start him, for the love of god
perpetually got his glasses on, perpetually holding an oversized cup of tea
has a collection of tiny little tattoos ( they’re all references to books / movies / music he loves )
i ............ love him a lot

Day 2 Podcasts (13 Days of Halloween)
Next on the list of spooky things to do for Halloween are Podcasts! Who doesn’t love a good ghost story? Radio shows used to have us shaking in our boots long before scary movies and now with the uprise in amazing voices to choose from you can explore the unexplained, seriously spooky, true crime, or tame fun year round.
Here is a list of 13 favorites, some tried and true and some brand spanking new!
The Cryptid Cases
The Cryptid Cases tells the story of Mia Miller and Lucas Campbell, old college friends who reunite after the disappearance of Mia's grandfather. This dynamic duo explore the continental US in search for mythical monsters and the mystery Mia’s grandfather left behind. Sometimes the cryptic creatures are exactly what history has us expect, and other times the audience is in for a hoax. Either way, this podcast is jam packed with interesting story telling, surprising discoveries and cool cryptid facts.
Here Be Monsters
Here be monsters is a podcast about the unknown. This collection of unusual audio documentaries has been in existence since 2012 so they have just about every topic under their belt. Some of their most recent include: unnecessary cruelty, unreadable books, and did neanderthals bury their dead? Now is the perfect time to listen, having just separated from their production company and moving forward as independent every listen counts! Go give them a shot and be sure to check out their patreon.
Jim Harold’s Campfire
Campfire is a very unique podcast in that it invites you the listener to take part in the storytelling! Just like a good old campfire gathering, Jim tells his own stories and the listener can call in and share theirs as well giving a creepy true story vibe.
This is a great one for the Halloween season or to stream at your virtual Halloween parties! Maybe you can stretch your story telling skills with a call in of your own.
Borrasca
Speaking of storytelling, do you remember Borrasca? For those unfamiliar, this terrifying tale has haunted the pages of Creepy Pasta for years!
Creepy Pasta is known for it’s unbelievable horror finds, but few stories hold the praise for writing, storytelling, and straight up nightmares that Borrasca leaves with its readers. Now you can listen to this psychological thriller written by The Haunting of Hill House season writer Rebecca Klingel and starring Riverdale’s Cole Sprouse.
Feel like you’ve listened to Borrasca before?
No Sleep
You may have heard the original Borrasca on the No Sleep Podcast with many other Creepy Pasta favorites. The No Sleep Podcast is a multi-award winning anthology series of original horror stories featuring casts of talented voice actors, rich atmospheric music and sound effects. It’s so well known and equally well liked for a reason. And with 15 seasons under their belt, you could easily listen to this all October long and still have plenty to keep you occupied through the rest of 2020.
And speaking of popular, next on our list has a following that just keeps growing with the ever expanding content:
Lore
Sometimes the truth is more frightening than fiction. In this well known podcast from Aaron Mahnke’s growing productions, the truth is definitely scary. It doesn’t need to be Halloween to enjoy these bites of dark history, but it certainly helps. Especially because for the month of October Lore becomes a weekly podcast so you never have to worry about running out of your favorite spooky content.
And if you do? Well that brings us to our next podcast.
Unobscured
Where Lore takes on new or sometimes multiple stories for each episode, Unobscured takes on one topic per series. The first year explored the Salem witch trials in such stunning detail that I am positive, if you tune in, you will learn at least one brand new never heard of Salem thing per episode. And that’s coming from a New Englander! Unobscured does exactly what it says on the tin, it takes a topic and peels off layer by layer of history and human emotions until the image left is, well… unobscured. Season 2 goes on to explore the Spiritualist Movement and the brand new Season 3 takes on Jack the Ripper! I’m working my way through that one with my husband right now and we’re loving it.
Pretty Scary
Are we scaring you off with this list? Do you like spooky but not scary? Want to listen to some scary stories but need a little humor to be able to sleep later? Pretty Scary is a pretty great podcast to try!
This podcast focuses on crime, ghosts, aliens, and all other manner of mysterious and unexplained phenomena. And! It’s hosted by comedians. Not only does this group know how to tell a story, but they definitely add some light to the dark.
The Scaredy Cats Horror Show
Speaking of podcasts for those faint of heart, there is a new kid on the block called The Scaredy Cats Podcast! This is a favorite for my husband who wants so desperately to know about the horror movies my friends and I love to talk about but was scared by the kittens in The Haunting of Hill House. Yes, you read that right - THE KITTENS.
This podcast is about scary movies for people who are too scared to ever watch them. Each week Alex Goldman, avowed horror fan, screens a scary movie for avowed scaredy cat PJ Vogt. Together, they want to find out if it’s possible to become a person who enjoys fear.
Sawbones
Another show for those not looking for a scare but maybe to have some fund being grossed out this Halloween is Sawbones.
Dr. Sydnee McElroy and her husband Justin take you on a tour of Misguided Medicine through history. Every Friday, they dig through the annals of medical history to uncover all the odd, weird, wrong, dumb and just gross ways we’ve tried to fix people over the years. Oh the things that go so very wrong!
Family Ghosts
Slowly getting back into the spooky, there is Family Ghosts.
Every house is haunted, if not with spirits then with secrets. Family Ghosts is a documentary-style storytelling podcast that investigates the true story behind a mysterious figure whose legend has followed a family for generations. Grandmothers who were secretly jewel smugglers, uncles who led double lives, siblings who vanished without a trace, and other specters who cast shadows over lives in ways that might not be immediately obvious.
Spirits
Speaking of spirits - here’s a podcast about them in all their forms! Spirits is a podcast about mythology, legends, and folklore and every episode comes with a drink to sip as you listen!
Co-hosts Julia and Amanda mix a drink and discuss a new story or character from a wide range of places, eras, and cultures. Learn brand-new stories and enjoy re-tellings of your favorite myths, served over ice every week.
Last Podcast on the Left
With that little bit of liquid courage from spirits, we’re diving back into the deep end with Last Podcast on the Left!
The last Podcast on the Left covers all things gore. Their topics run the gamut from horror told around the world both real and imagined to demons, movies, cults and serial killers. If you’re looking for new terrifying topics weekly, Last Podcast on the Left is sure to satiate your blood lust.
But don’t be too afraid, this group of goofy guys speak to their audience in a way that makes you feel like you’re one of the friend group. It’s easy to imagine meeting up with your friends on that old couch in the basement or around a campfire every week to scare each other senseless and share a few laughs.
13 days of Halloween with Keegan-Michael Key
Last but certainly not least is the treasure that is 13 days of Halloween with Keegan-Michael Key, a new podcast from Grim and Mild. My husband and I just started this last night and we are so excited to continue the weird and wild journey forward!
13 Days of Halloween is a unique adventure that tows the line between ethereal horror and thrilling campfire tales. Each episode explores a different chilling story from the residents of the mysterious Hawthorne Manor and its caretaker voiced by actor Keegan-Michael Key. A fun twist was that this manor is really brought to life with 360-degree surround sound. New episodes are released every day starting October 19th, ending on Halloween.
We couldn’t end this list on a more perfect podcast.
Don’t forget to comment below!
13 Days of Halloween is a special treat for me and my readers. On Halloween, there will be a very special giveaway I’d love for you to take part in. All you have to do to enter is comment or share this post to your social media.
Thank you for participating and best of luck!

Straight Outta Hell-Magnus Bane Part 5
(Y/N) finally has a moment to herself but for how long?
Masterlist HERE
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
(Y/N) had been staying with Magnus [and Alec who had basically moved in] for the past two week. They had had a few visits from the shadowhunters and vampire but not much has been happening. Magnus had been catching you up to the past two centuries, which honestly just sounded depressing, and gossiping about old downworlders who you knew. “Ragnor did what?!?” Magnus hummed in response. “With her, really?!” “I couldn't believe it either.” Magnus put his cocktail to the side while you just sipped yours after letting out a low whistle. “Well I'll be damned.” “Well you kind of were already. Hey im just kidding!” Magnus added upon seeing your venomous stare. “Speaking of your uprising from hell,” You rolled your eyes. “how are you going to tell the downworld? You are a very important part of it, even when you left.” “How come? I mean I've not really been doing much the past two hundred years.” “Legends my dear.” He continued upon your confused look. “The saviour of warlocks and infrits who couldn't hide their marks during the witch trials. The one who solved vampire and werewolf feuds in Prague and made steps forward in other countries. The one who took in all the abandoned downworlders with no thought to themselves. You are a legend, no matter what they say.” “Not true. I did what anyone would do.” You summoned up another drink. Ah joys of magic!
“No, no they wouldn't. Do you know how many downworlders are so helpless they turned to Mortiman or De Quincey? Hundreds. You kept us good and didn't ask for anything in return. For angel’s sake you made a city of downworlders during the Salem trials because you were so concerned!” “Tell me, is it still standing? I haven't actually checked.” “Yes. Still perfectly safe. Although not many use it, not much service in the Scottish highlands.” You and Magnus laughed for a moment before Alec returned. “Alexander.” “Yo archer.” Your and Mag’s greetings were different to say the least. “The clave want a meeting with you.” You slumped down and groaned. “Sorry couldn't be avoided. Little girl thought my Mum knew. Idiot.” He breathed the last part out, barley audible. “Uh what time?” You groaned while saying it dramatically. “Eleven am tomorrow morning. Oh come on its not that early!” Alec added, seeing your eyes bulge. “Its night time somewhere.” “Thats what I say about cocktail hour.” Magnus grinned. Alec rolled his eyes before flinging himself down onto an armchair. “Everything all right?” “My mum was breathing down my neck for not telling her about you. The clave wasn't happy either and I got sent on one of Clary’s mission because she and Izzy were late.” “Oh baby,” Magnus pouted. “Would magic help? Or anything else?” “Unless magic can get all the tension out your neck and shoulders I doubt it.” When he said that you flicked your wrist and Alec put his hand on his shoulder blade. “What did you do?” He said with a hint of pleasure in his voice. “Magic massage. Works wonders on the stress.” You said casually. You leaned forward and went to grab something that wasn't on the table until your fingers touched the bag. “Chinese?” You offered. Although Alec, and partially Magnus, had became accustomed to your power still got slightly shocked. You barley had to move and you preformed great magic. Magnus had partially forgot how powerful you were although you told him your hell crash course had taught you more.
The next morning at eleven oclock, way to early in your opinion, you were walking up to the New York Instiitute. Alec had left before you so he could talk to the embassador the clave had sent. After a moment of standing near the door Jace walked out. “Eleven on the dot.” He smirked. You returned it. “Didnt want to be here longer than I had too.” “Charming.” “Im aware. I took a hint out of your book.” You two reached the hall way and started to walk to the main room. “What, being an amazing deleget?” “No.” He looked at you expectingly. “Arrogant and cocky sass machine.” “Such flattery.” He rolled his eyes although you both strated laughing slightly. Although he had threatened you, you two had actually became kind of close due to your similar humour, much to Alec’s dismay and Magnus’s frustration. “(Y/N) Zender?” A women with short dark hair and muscular frame asked. “Its (Y/N) (Y/L/N) now.” She raised an eyebrow while shaking your hand. Up close you relsied she must be in her late sixties, old for a shadowhunter. “I change last names. Keeps it interesting, you know?” You laugheed slightly. Like you were going to tell them it was so mundanes couldn't keep track of you. Or shadowhunters who didn't try. You went by Zender about five hundred years ago and have bounced between a few since. “My apologies, Miss (Y/L/N). If you would follow me.” Her words were clipped and gave no option. You followed as her steel toed boots tapped the hard floor. “Im Rebecca Wainheart, envoy from the Clave. You might of known some of my mothers family; the Whitescar’s?” “Briefly yes.” You replied shortly. They had killed near a full pack of werewolves in your care three hundred years ago. You ended up in a meeting room sat round a table with thirteen people. Rebecca Wainheart, Joshua Dragonway, Lewis Ravenkey, Emily Penrose, Lelia Firefox, Brendon Goldhawk, Robert and Mayrse Lightwood, Jia Penhallow, Alec, Jace, Izzy and Clary. “Welcome,” Started Inquisitor Robert Lightwood (going by books here) “May we begin?”
I know its short but keep them wanting more right? Right? Sigh. Well ok its short but I want to ease myself back into this story instead of jumping straight in.

Boston, you knocked my Sox off!
(See what I did there!)
Loooong travel day, 6.5hr bus trip back to DC, followed by a train to the airport. I had allowed a good 5 hrs from the bus arrival to the flight departure, so when the flight was delayed by another hour it turned out to be a very long day!! All part of travelling though, and I am still the worst sleeper ever, so that doesn’t help either! I booked a brand new hotel that is part of a chain I have stayed in before. Good choice Kaz, it seems familiarity is still something you crave even when you have been on the crazy odyssey I have been on! Not the most expensive, but not the cheapest either, although research showed me that Boston is not the cheapest place for accomodation! Good news is I again lucked out and have ended up in walking distance to all the stops on the freedom trail, as well as the Tea party ships in the harbour. Oh, I almost forgot, more importantly walking distance to little Italy... seriously , yum...
My first day here, was a colder, wet day, and after my late night and big sleep, I decided to explore my local area, and find a laundromat, get the boring but necessary part of travel out of the way. I ended up at a local coffee shop while I was waiting ( in the Italian quarter - I worked out later.... in my defence I was tired!!) Anyway I had some great chats with some locals at both the coffee shop and the laundromat. Yes, I still talk to strangers....
I will admit it, I am in love with Boston. This place seems to have just the right balance of everything. Public transport system is not the newest or cleanest (or cheapest..) BUT it still got me in all the feels. The history here is amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed walking the freedom trail. Cheapo that I am I didn’t want to buy the map or books, I found a free online interactive map, that told me the stories of the sites, and conveniently the sidewalks had a tiled red section indicating the trail (no arrows or numbers like the one in Hanover though). Apparently a journalist had suggested marking the path to the 16 landmark sites some time in the 1950’s - fabulous idea!!! The walk itself apparently takes about 2.5 hours (its about 4 miles) and covers the sites that are integral parts of the history of not just this city, but of the entire country. The freedom trail takes you on a journey of the major players who were a part of the Boston Tea Party, an uprising that set the country on a course that ultimately ended in a war with England, and the birth of a new nation. Charleston, the site of the Bunker hill monument ( the final stop of the trail), a giant 67m tall granite monument erected between 1825 and 1843 was one of the sites of the first major battles between the British and the Patriot forces in the American Revolutionary War.
Luckily one of the guys in reception had suggested a local Italian deli that make, the best, Italian sub I have ever put in my mouth. Seriously. Tastiest thing ever. the fact that they shave the meat to order as they make it, only adds to the appeal. I then located a shop that makes Italian pastries getting a couple of cannolis that I was destined to eat over the next couple days. (Sad to say they may have been nicer than the ones I had in Sicily recently —-eeek yep I said it!!!) There are no rules about following the freedom trail, so truth be told I kind of did some on one day, then wandered and decided to start from the beginning the second day I was here, starting in the famous Biston Common, taking in such beautiful buildings as the Massachusetts state house, kings chapel, the site of the Boston massacre, Feneuil hall, and some amazing cemeteries (Google the whole list if you're interested!) It was then time for a lunch stop, and where better than Boston's oldest restaurant, the Union Oyster. I had to have the clam chowder and a lobster roll! The building was amazing, the interior covered in historical pictorials. The food was good, probably not worth the price, (and the roll was not as nice as the one I'd had in NYC) but hey it's the ambience and the history you sign up for!
After lunch I stopped before heading to Bunker hill, Instead heading to the Tea party ships and museum (in the opposite direction). Thinking about it, its not much different to how I have done everything else on this crazy adventure. I kind of just wing it and seem to end up in the right place at the right time. When I arrived at the tea party museum, I was just in time for the start of the next tour. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, these things are awesome. They have actors who take on the role of historical figures and lead you through the events of the past. You are given a card with your own character on it and encouraged to join in (as if I need more encouragement...) My kind of leaning really!!! The mix of live interactive performance and the films they show you gave me an incredible insight and understanding of the events that have been dubbed as the ‘Boston tea party’. The Boston Tea Party was a political protest that took place on 16th December 1773 at Griffin’s Wharf. American colonists, frustrated and angry at Britain for imposing “taxation without representation.” They boarded the ships and smashed open and dumped about 350 or so lead lined chests of tea, imported by the British East India Company, into the harbour. This event was the first major act of defiance to British rule over the colonists.
My last full day I spent out in Salem. The story of the witch hysteria, and what occurred back in 1692 is unsettling in the least. Understandable in way, given the time period it occurred, (hey its easier to look at anything in hindsight and go - ‘hey why did that happen’). Anyway it was another rainy day, which added to the intrigue. The city itself plays on its witch history, something I’m not sure sits quite right with me, but I guess you either own it and make it work for you or end up with al the tourists anyway! The historical area of the town has some amazing buildings. The witch museum tour was another tour presented by actors and gave me more if an understanding of the events at that time. The memorial for the 19 people who died as a result of the trials was very well done. A simple space that details the date and manner of thier death, with their final statements carved into the stone entrances to the space. 18 of the accused were hung, with one man (whose wife had already been hung), crushed to death. The law at the time required a trial and a plea to be entered before any punishment was dealt out. Giles Corey refused to enter a plea, so the torture of the day was applied in order to get him to speak. He apparently lasted almost 3 days of having boulders placed upon him, his only words each time, "more weight", his final words apparently a curse upon the town and the office of Sheriff. There is alot more interesting history that revolves around the Salem witch trials. The fact that they recognised they had been wrong and made restitution to the families of those who had been killed was a big step. They still have only theories as to how and why it all began, but I guess an onus of proof instead of heresay is one big thing that came out of it!
I then headed back to Boston on the train, catching a local train to get me over to Bunker hill memorial (yeah- I didn't feel like walking a mile by then!). I didn't climb the memorial as it was too late for the last entry, but it's impressive and kind of humbling to stand at its base knowing what occurred here.
All too soon, my time here is over! 😪
I'm off to Chicago to see another friend from my Morocco tour - more Boston photos to come (as usual!!)

to be specific, him being a warlock who was cursed to be a cat in general is what i wanted from the character. really him and the aunts, as of episode one, are what confuse me most. mostly because if they’re meant to be sisters i wish the actresses looked slightly more similar or had the same accent or something. but yeah, from my understanding they’re writing salem as a demon-goblin-thing in the form of a cat which, to me, is less cool than him being a cursed dude (especially one who started an uprising which was supported by hilda, i loved that version)
salem’s original canon backstory was so cool Why Would You Do This?
