To me, Machete kind of has the energy of a secondary villain/coldhearted side character in someone else's story that a lot of fans latch onto, moreso than the protagonist. Question is, would he be the villain in anyone's story?

Why, thank you! I'm actually glad to hear he gives off that vibe. I don't think he set out to become a villain but a lot of people certainly view him as one.

okay heres what were not gonna do about the upd8. were not gonna call for censorship. were not gonna pedojacket anyone, either the writers/artists or the fans who enjoyed the upd8, or fans who say that this was a good depiction of this particular trauma. we are not going to brush off and shut down the upd8 for making you feel bad nor are we going to call this depiction of abuse poorly handled simply because it made you specifically upset. its something thats upsetting to read about point blank. if youre upset reading about this then congrats for being in the majority of humans reacting appropriately to an upsetting thing. but were gonna read it and were not gonna behave like headless fuckin chickens about it because these themes have been present in homestuck for a very long time and now theyre finally coming to a climatic point and resolution. stop screaming about how no one should depict this shit. inform each other of trigger warnings so other people can opt-in. but fuckin stop saying that no one should write about this. stop calling the hs2 team gross and horrible for writing this. unclench and think about others outside of your disgust reaction. these stories need to be told

I hate and love that my comic scratches the ultimate itch of the sort of narrative I want to consume because on the one hand, I love working on it and it is fully my Essence. AND ANOTHER THING, I say, coming back into the tag with an unrelated question for the fine minds here in MLC fandom: how the fuck did baby li xiangyi afford to even found the sigu sect. He's like seventeen! max!! shan gudao presumably has built up a cushion of funds from fucking about on his lonesome in the jianghu for (mumble) years and probably doing some sketchy shit while unsupervised (and also fathering fang doubing, because the timeline of MLC is even more nonsense otherwise), and, I assume, the other people of sigu sect helped bankroll it, but still!

li xiangyi is seventeen? max?? somewhere between fifteen and seventeen?? and sigu sect is fucking big. that is a lot of very fancy land and buildings, and also a lot of very fancy stuff in general, where did this orphan street rat raised on the side of a mountain get the money for that? I assume he was sent out with like. some money to Not Starve, but I don't think he was sent out with 'found a rich ass sect' money.

like I guess bounties? rewards from grateful people he saved??? very explicitly not the imperial court, I think, given he's like 'we have nothing to do with them we cannot compromise our ethics' argument with shan gudao, so...???

i really like writing about boring people. i like putting the most mid guy in existence next to the protagonist suffering from glorious purpose. here is a guy with no special skills, no blessings from the narrative, no outlandish identifying traits. and he can be just as interesting as the other guy as long as you make him feel real. banality is sublime to me.
