#Repost @wwf (@get_repost) ・・・ 📷Image by @EverydayExtinction contributor @queenofmantas A bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) moments after drowning in a discarded gillnet within the Revillagigedo Islands World Heritage site. Dolphins, scavenging for fish trapped within these nets, can get entangled themselves and drown. A companion dolphin tried to assist the entangled dolphin. It stayed in the immediate vicinity vocalizing and protecting the corpse for two days after its death. Nicknamed ‘ghostnets’, these silent killers can wreak havoc on reefs, becoming entangled in coral or rocks and ensnaring unsuspecting fish, invertebrates, even larger sharks and mammals for days, months, even years. #Repost @wwf (@get_repost) ・・・ Image by @EverydayExtinction contributor @tspinski African elephant foot stool with zebra skin cushion, photographed by @tspinski for @nytimes in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Repository in Denver, Colorado. In the Spring of 2017, I was commissioned by The New York Times to photograph the National Wildlife Property Repository, a warehouse on the outskirts of Denver packed with illegal animal parts and products. These are objects of want and desire. Many are made of threatened or endangered species. The spectrum of non-perishable products can be divided into three primary categories: trophies, medicinal products and fashion accessories. Most are contraband, seized at major ports of entry around the United States. Collectively, the facility and the 1.3 million products within its walls represent an evidence vault. One that testifies to an economy serving the human appetite for other species. #EverydayExtinction #anthropocene #sixthexinction #massextinction #africanwildlife #animalcontraband #wildlifetrade

#Repost @everydayextinction (@get_repost) ・・・ Image of a Gangetic river dolphin (Platanista gangetica gangetica) by @aratikumarrao for @everydayextinction The most ancient of all cetaceans, the blind, side-swimming, endangered Gangetic river dolphin is also India’s national aquatic animal. With only about 2000 or so individuals left in the wild, this dolphin is finding its survival threatened in many ways.  This is one way that dolphins die – especially young ones. Either they go to feed on fish caught in nets or, worse, they get trapped in nets strung across the width of a river. It’s their teeth: A fine white neat parabolic curve of sharp clean teeth that the net weaves itself in and out of, and snaps the snout shut. Adult dolphins are strong enough to cut through the net, juveniles like this one can do nothing. Unable to come up to breathe (dolphins are mammals and break the surface in graceful arcs to take in lungsful of air) they thrash wildly in the water, often entangling themselves further. Eventually, they suffocate and perish. A more pervasive threat to dolphins are dams and barrages which fragment the cetacean’s habitat and impound water, desperately diminishing flows in the lower stretches of the river Ganga. Dolphins love deep waters. Ongoing research has predicted that Gangetic dolphins will become extinct from many rivers without adequate flow. There is yet another sinister threat to these ancient creatures. India is planning to beef up its waterways. The National Waterway 1 & 2 — along the Ganga and the Brahmaputra rivers — overlap with 90% of the dolphin’s habitat range.  Dredging (both rivers are among the siltiest in the world) that will be mandatory in order to keep the waterways pliable has been shown to affect the dolphins’ surfacing frequency. In an already fragmented, polluted and degraded habitat, increased stressful anthropogenic activities across 90% of its range does not bode well for the endangered cetacean. Even if the dolphins wanted to move, where would they go? Dams, barrages, dredgers, and barges would be everywhere. #everydayextinction #biodiversity #extinction #rivers #freshwaterspecies #freshwaterextinction

| A white rhino is dehorned at a rhino farm, Klerksdorp, NW Province, South Africa - Yesterday, the Chinese government made a devastating announcement reversing a 25 year ban on the sale and use of Rhinoceros and Tiger products. It will allow the use of powdered rhino horns and tiger bones for “medical research or in healing” from farmed rhinos and tigers in government certified Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hospitals - In a statement announcing the replacement of the 25-year old ban, the State Council said powdered forms of rhino horn and bones from dead tigers could be used in "qualified hospitals by qualified doctors”. The animal products can only be obtained from farms, it said, and added ‘“parts from those animals classified as ‘antiques' could be used in cultural exchanges if approved by the cultural authorities. Even if restricted to antiques and use in hospitals, this trade will surely increase confusion by consumers and law enforcers as to which products are, and are not legal, and would likely expand the markets for other tiger and rhino products. This comes on the very same day that WWF’s Living Planet Report reveals that “humanity has wiped out 60% of wildlife since the 1970s” and that the “Earth is losing biodiversity at a rate seen only during mass extinctions.” Follow me here

. ‘My dive buddy came across this drowned green sea turtle. Turtles need to surface to breath, and the fishing line she was tangled in was too short for her to reach the surface, the other end snagged in the reef. All sea turtle species are endangered and entanglements are a major threat. After removing the fishing gear so it would not claim any other victims we buried her in the sand.’

Photograph by David Chancellor @chancellordavid | Gabra house, northern Kenya. The Gabra, a nomadic tribe of 31,000 people, occupy territory east of Lake Turkana in Kenya, along the edge of the Chalbi Desert, extending to Ethiopia. For the Gabra, to live in balance with a trying environment they protect land, animal, and fellow Gabra. Thus, they practice certain food and plant taboos, preserve full-grown trees called "korma" (bulls), and revere pregnant women and pregnant animals. As resource managers, they migrate to the highlands during the rainy season to allow the dry season pasture to replenish its water resources, taking homes, livestock, and all possessions with them. Perhaps most symbolic of the Gabra's identity is the proverb: "a poor man shames us all." Since mutual support is imperative for their survival as nomads, no Gabra may be allowed to go hungry, go without animals, or be refused hospitality or assistance. A person who refuses to help others is labeled "al baku," a stigma that stays affixed to the family for generations. #withbutterfliesandwarriors #northernkenya #kenya #conservation #conserving #fightingextinction @everydayextinction https://ift.tt/2S3VDVs

Enjoy this this brilliant #repost #RememberingGreatApes contributor, #wildographer @lifethroughalensphotography and remember to support @rememberingwildlife initiatives. ・・・ C O M P E T I N G • F O R • A T T E N T I O N 🦍 ____________________ André Bauma rescued Ndakasi when she was still an infant. Her mother had just been murdered, and without André, the other Virunga NP rangers, and veterinarians from Gorilla Doctors she would have died within days, if not hours. Ten years later, to her, André is both mother and father, and when one of the other mountain gorillas at Senkwekwe - there are three other orphans being cared for here - wants his attention, she can get a bit jealous. Although she now weighs over 70kgs, she loves being close to him, and climbs onto his back for a piggyback ride every chance she gets. “I’m getting too old for this,” an exhausted and sweaty André told me after half an hour of rough play with Ndakasi and Ndeze (who also wanted her share of André’s attention), his shirt torn. “But I will always be here. They are my children.” He’s a great man, André, and spending time with him was a real privilege. ⭐️ . . . . . #Wildography #wildographyandsafaris #bornfreefoundation #mountaingorillas #senkwekwe #virunga #drc #congo #primates #greatapeconservation #greatapes #lifethroughalens #africa #everydayextinction #marcuswestberg @virunganationalpark @savevirunga @gorilladoctors @gorillahighlands @everydayafrica #everydayafrica @gorilla_lovers #activeconservation @african_portraits @savinggorillas

Posted @withrepost • @natgeo Photos by David Chancellor @chancellordavid | At Liwonde National Park, in Malawi, I had the enormous privilege and pleasure to work with the British Army, documenting their lives while working in this beautiful part of the planet. These are also challenging environments to work in. It was very clear that those who chose to carry out this work knew the risks, and they did so simply because they could, should, and wanted to help protect the planet's wildlife and ecosystems. Operation Corded, the name given to the army's counter-poaching deployment in Malawi, assists in training rangers in a bid to help them crack down on the illegal wildlife trade. Park rangers are taught skills such as tracking, partnered patrolling, communications, surveillance, and intelligence sharing. An armed patrol of British soldiers and African park rangers was walking through tall grass up to 7 feet (2.1 m) high when they disturbed an unseen herd of elephants. It's worth noting that it's for this very reason that poachers chose to raze the park to the ground: in order to see wildlife more easily and thus slaughter it more easily. Mathew Talbot, 22, of the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, was charged and killed by an elephant. This is a reminder of the danger faced by those who choose to protect some of the world's most endangered species from those who seek to profit from the criminal slaughter of wildlife. As the sun sets in Malawi, RIP Guardsman Talbot and all those who pay the ultimate price for conservation. sometimes, the protection and conversation of True nature is a war that takes courage in the face of danger. even the dangers of nature itself.
God created nature and the seeds of life that grow thereof. and there is a fear barrier between wild animals and humans that won’t always exist. in the rebirth of beautiful earth there will be friendship restored amongst all life forms.
(there is a beautiful hope in a promise)
