even though this is about bound to you in ch6, this convo takes place during ch5 so the title is from sanctuary and not bound to you!!! this takes place the thursday night before karaoke (oct 7). rosh is hanging out at simon's after school!

i'll give you something so real (call me up late #8)

this is part of a series of drabbles that give a closer look at what is going on behind the screens of call me up late. i want to do a bunch of these over time so please let me know which parts of cmul you want to see more from!!

“What are you going to sing for me on my birthday?” Rosh teased, pelting a piece of popcorn in Simon’s general direction. Simon caught this one midair and popped it into his mouth. His neutral smile turned into a smirk.

“Wouldn’t you like to know?”

“It’s gonna have to be good if you want to one-up last year.”

“I don’t think I have it in me,” Simon replied with a loud, overdramatic sigh. “Sometimes if I step on it the wrong way, my ankle still hurts from when I fucked it up with that choreo.”

Rosh remembered this well. Simon used his “injury” as an excuse to get out of everything for practically the entire year. Not again. Not if Rosh had anything to do with it.

“For your own safety, and the safety of your adoring public in close proximity, I’m specifically requesting a park and bark this year.”

“Thank god.”

Rosh plucked another piece of popcorn from the bowl on her lap and hurdled it at Simon, this time missing him completely. Simon glared at Rosh in response as he began to search around his bed to figure out where it had landed.

“Gimme your phone. Gonna snoop through your Spotify.”

Simon’s Spotify account was filled with countless playlists that he was constantly updating and editing, all of which contained songs he loved and felt comfortable singing. Rosh was confident she could pick one out that both her and Simon would love that would a) keep everybody physically safe, b) show off Simon’s crazy gorgeous angel voice, and c) make Rosh cry on her birthday, which was admittedly always the goal.

Simon tossed his phone to Rosh before resuming is search for the missing piece of popcorn. Pulling up Simon’s Spotify app, Rosh raised an eyebrow at the most recently played album, looking back up to Simon to comment on it.

“Ha, why were you listening to Burlesque last?”

“What? I wasn’t-”

Simon stopped his denial mid-thought, partially because he likely realized who he was talking to, and partially because he had found the piece of popcorn that had fallen behind a pillow and became distracted popping it in his mouth.

“I will pay you all the money I don’t have if you sing ‘Welcome to Burlesque’.”

“Thought you said I was gonna park and bark. If I’m going to be Cher, I’m going to have to be all of Cher.”

“Okay, well, let’s put it on the shortlist for next year.”

“Noted.”

Rosh opened one of Simon’s latest playlists and was starting to thumb through when the phone vibrated with an incoming text message. She saw Wille’s name in the notification and a knowing grin spread across her face. Simon’s mysterious text-crush strikes again.

“You got a text from horse boy.”

Rosh watched as Simon’s whole demeanor changed, eyes brightened and alert as he spoke without a moment's hesitation. God, so whipped already.

“What’d he say?”

She clicked on the notification from Wille to read the message, which as it turned out, had no message at all, but instead a link to a TikTok. She relayed as much to Simon, who reacted by reaching out his hands and grabbing for his phone.

“Gimme.”

Rosh instead stood up from her chair, setting the bowl of popcorn down where she had been sitting. She made eye contact with Simon in a way that wordlessly cued Simon to shuffle over from where he was sprawled on his bed to make room for Rosh to crawl on next to him. She then clicked on the link and held the phone in between to two of them so they could both watch.

Just a handful of seconds long, the video was of two horses in opposite stalls who inched their noses closer and closer until they were just touching. The horses each let out an amusing neigh before the video cut off and restarted.

Rosh almost laughed.

“This whole flirting through horses thing is kind of fucked up.”

“He’s so persistent with it,” Simon said, amusement and fondness in his voice. “It’s kind of endearing.”

Rosh shook her head in disbelief. “Simon, you are the only person I know that would actually fall for this.”

“So you also think he’s flirting? I’m not going crazy reading into this?”

It was cute how Simon had doubts about what was going on here. To Rosh, Wille seemed to be entirely transparent. She gave Simon a look that she hoped clearly conveyed that she thought Simon was being an idiot.

“Simme, these horses are kissing.”

Simon let out a loud, frustrated groan and flung himself forward into the pillows on his bed.

“It is just so hard to pick up on social cues via text message. I hate not knowing.”

“Maybe you just have to take the guesswork out of it by being more upfront yourself. You be less subtle, so he knows where you stand.”

Simon squirmed further into his pillows, at this point a lost cause.

“No. No, Wille seems to have a lot more reservations when it comes to personal stuff, so I was kind of banking on him setting the pace for now.”

Rosh frowned. Knowing Simon as well as she did, she didn’t like this approach for him. Simon had a big heart that cared so deeply for the people he loved. However, because his love was so unconditional, it was easy for him to be taken advantage of. Rosh had seen it happen before, and was quick to catch the telltale signs of it happening again.

“That’s not fair to you.”

Simon was quiet for a moment before he responded softly. “I don’t want to scare him off.”

“I thought we just established that he is clearly flirting with you.”

“I just don’t want to push it. Not quite yet.”

Okay, well. If Simon wasn’t going to take the next step with Wille, Rosh decide she wasn’t above doing some old-fashioned meddling. The gears turned in her head quickly as she began formulating a plan on the fly.

Simon’s phone still in hand, she switched back over to the Spotify app and paged back to see Simon’s most recent plays, clicking on the Burlesque soundtrack. She handed Simon’s phone back to him, with a glimmer of mischief in her eyes.

“Sing the song X-tina sings near the end of the movie. The one when she’s dressed like Kermit the Frog.”

“‘Bound to You’?” Simon asks, an eyebrow raised in question. Rosh nodded.

“You’re clearly only listening to the soundtrack of this trash garbage movie because of that shit you pulled when you were trying to figure out if Wille was queer or not. And that song is romantic as fuck. If nothing else, use it as an emotional outlet for all of your pining.”

“I’m not pining.”

“Uh-huh,” Rosh replied, unconvinced.

Rosh watched in amusement as Simon tapped on the Spotify track to listen to “Bound To You”, chewing on his bottom lip as he considered the option.

“I mean… I would sound incredible singing this.”

“Obviously.”

Simon smiled, the hint of a blush appearing on his cheeks as Christina sang about being terrified to love for the first time.

The rest of Rosh’s plan would be easy. All she really needed to do was make sure Simon’s outfit for karaoke had no pockets so he would have to leave his phone with her. Then she just needed to be able to give Wille a ring so he could be able to see exactly what page Simon was on when it came to whatever the hell they were doing.

Rosh couldn’t imagine hearing Simon sing and not falling a little bit in love.

Her plan was foolproof.

Pretty Penny

Chapter 3

A few days later, TK knocked on the Ryder’s front door. Grace answered the door and hugged TK eagerly. “It’s so good to see you. Come in!”

The Ryder’s house was messier than TK had ever seen it, the living room filled with all sorts of baby equipment: play mat, bouncy chair, pack n play, and a large swing where baby Charlie was napping. Blankets and burp cloths and empty bottles were scattered around the room. TK immediately thought about Penny and all the things she would need in just a few short months.

“She’s beautiful,” he whispered. “Getting so big.”

“Oh, you don’t need to whisper when she’s napping,” Grace said. “Between Judd yelling at his video games and me running the vacuum and Wyatt doing whatever it is teenagers do, she’s learned to sleep through all the chaos.” Grace gestured toward the dining room table. “Can I get you anything to drink?”

“No thanks,” TK answered, taking a seat. “Where is Judd anyway?”

“Oh, he’s taking a nap, too. He says you’re supposed to sleep when the baby sleeps.” Grace rolled her eyes.

“I’m pretty sure that’s an actual thing,” TK said.

“Not when he wakes up in the night, changes a diaper, and then hands the baby back to me for feeding right before he rolls over and goes back to sleep.”

“Good point,” TK said. His thoughts again turned to Penny. Even though Grace joked about her husband’s sleeping habits, TK knew Judd was a great dad who did as much as he could in his current condition to help with the baby. Penny would be doing so many things on her own. The stress of caring for an infant by herself could put a strain on her sobriety.

“Hey, you still with me?” Grace asked. “Is everything all right, TK?”

“Yeah, sorry. I’ve just got a lot on my mind.” He’d only come to ask Grace about the requirements to become a dispatcher, but Grace’s natural warmth had him telling her all about Penny, including his concerns for her.

When TK finished his story, Grace hugged him. “I’m sorry your friend is going through such a difficult time, TK. I can tell how much she means to you. Tell you what, why don’t you bring Penny over here next time you’re off work, and I’ll talk to her myself? It sounds like she could use a few more friends, and she might want someone to talk to about becoming a mother.”

“Thank you, Grace. I appreciate it.”

“Appreciate what?” Judd said, appearing in the doorway. He was still recovering from his leg injuries but had graduated from a wheelchair to crutches. It would still be a while before he could go back to work.

“Oh, nothing,” Grace said. “I’m just going to help out a friend of TK’s.”

Judd rested his crutches against the table and leaned down to kiss his wife before settling down into a chair. “How’s it going, TK?” he asked. “It’s been a while. Hey, have ya’ll set a date for the wedding yet? I’m hoping I’ll be in better shape for dancing by then.”

“I think we did?” TK said. “I mean, we did, but then things got complicated.”

“Complicated how?” Judd asked. “Ya’ll didn’t get into a fight or something, did you? Because I’ll tell you, the station barely survived your last break up…”“I barely survived our last break up,” TK said with a laugh. “And no, we didn’t get into a fight. Things are great with the two of us. It’s everybody else that’s complicating things. We didn’t want to wait long, so we picked September 24, but Carlos’s parents want us to push the date later, and Enzo reminded me that Rosh Hashanah starts the day after we picked, and my friend’s baby is due that week. I know we should just push it back, but I don’t want to. I just want to be married to him.”

Hi! I have a quick question if it's okay. Are there any daily practices that Jewish people partake in that I need to keep in mind while writing, especially around holidays? I've heard of daily prayers, but is that it? Thank you!

Thank you for the question! Let me start by saying that I’m not the most religious person and I don’t do most of the daily rituals, but I’ll tell you what I can. Also, it’s important to note that Jews are a very diverse people. Not everybody believes the same things or does the same things.

Traditionally speaking, there are three daily prayers. There’s the morning prayer, as you said. It’s called Shacharit or Shacharis (though in my experience people just call it morning prayers or blessings). I’ll put a link at the bottom to explain in more detail but I’ll give you a few things. It starts with the Modeh Ani, then a ritual hand washing, then the Asher Yatzar. I want to emphasize that (again, in my experience) only very observant Jews practice this strictly. There are also afternoon and evening prayers. I’d say that if you were going to focus on the most prominent parts of Jewish prayer in your writing, focus on the Shema. It’s the centerpiece of both morning and evening prayers.

Shabbat is an important aspect of Judaism. It’s approximately twenty-five hours from around Friday at sunset to Saturday at sunset. (Note: Jewish holidays typically start at sundown the night before; therefore, on fasting holidays, we fast sunset to sunset.) Shabbat starts with a candle-lighting ceremony. We have celebratory family meals and refrain from all work (for some people this goes as far as not using electricity). A character, if religious, would likely be baking challah in the lead-up.

When you say holidays it really depends on what you’re referring to. While Chanukah is widely celebrated, it’s not the most significant Jewish celebration. The most important Jewish holiday is Yom Kippur. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur mark the beginning and the end of the the High Holy Days. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish new year and Yom Kippur, which comes ten days later, is the Day of Atonement. Except on Shabbat, for those ten days we blow the shofar (a ram’s horn) starting on Rosh Hashanah. These days are also days of reflection. Yom Kippur is when we atone and repent. We fast (not just food, but water too) and spend most of the day in shul. Many don’t wear leather and it’s traditional to dress in white. While it’s a lot about internal reflection, we are surrounded by our community in shul. It’s the most solemn day on the Jewish calendar and incredibly important.

The other extremely important holidays are Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkoth. I’ll explain those in another post if people would like (or any other holidays) but this is getting long.

A couple of other every day things: many Jewish men (and some women) wear a yarmulke/kippah. I can’t explain the traditional garments of Orthodox Jews because to be honest, I don’t know enough about it. Another thing many Jews have is a mezuzah. A mezuzah holds a small prayer inside of it. It’s nailed outside a doorway. People might gently touch three fingers to it as they enter the room/house/apartment and then kiss those fingers.

Final note: while the biggest three Jewish movements are Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox, there are a lot of Jews who belong to another movement or are atheists. Many atheists Jews participate in holidays and many even practice some of the things mentioned above. Judaism means different things to different people and, to many, it’s about a shared tradition and carrying on the faith of our ancestors who weren’t allowed to publicly practice for fear of hatred, arrest, or even death.

This is super long and I apologize if I didn’t fully answer your question. To be honest, there’s no one answer. There are so many more things I could have talked about, but based on the question, this is what I thought of. I apologize if it’s not what you wanted. I’d be happy to clarify anything and answer other questions. Thank you so much for asking!

This December, Bergen County natives The Front Bottoms will be throwing their annual ‘Champagne Jam’ in Asbury Park’s historic Convention Hall for the fifth year in a row after a successful co-headlining tour with beloved indie band Manchester Orchestra. The Front Bottoms are a band that just won’t stop from their humble D.I.Y. beginning on Bar/None Records to their cult-icon status on Fueled By Ramen. Their last major release was the Ann EP, the second in their grandmother series, which sparked a tour where they would play both the EP and Going Greyfront-to-back.

This tour, they’re taking things even looser with an entire bar setup on stage and more crowd interaction than thought possible for a band that signed to a major label. I got the chance to catch up with lead singer Brian Sella and talk about new beginnings, the artistic process and what home means to him.

How are you liking tour so far?

So far, so good, you know? All the shows so far have been pretty fantastic, so it’s been a nice feeling…To be able to come out here and, you know, play the music, and it’s like, “Oh, wow, people are rockin’, rollin’ and having a good time.” So, it’s really incredible.

You guys are originally from New Jersey. I am too, so I know it must be nice to get away from it for a bit, right?

[Laughs] Yeah you know it. Jersey is a nice place to come home to. A nice place to leave, a nice place to come home to.

Lots of great bands and musicians are from New Jersey, like Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, My Chemical Romance and The Misfits. What do you think it is about New Jersey that inspires great art?

Well, really, I’m not sure. I think it’s probably the tone or the atmosphere of it all. It’s just kind of, like, you could live close to Manhattan, but you don’t live in the city. You live close to Philadelphia, but you’re not from Pennsylvania. You could go to the beach, it’s on the coastline. You could also shoot up to Boston. I think the fact that there’s access to so many different styles makes its own style. I think that’s kind of why so many people from Jersey end up being total freakin’ nutjobs. [Laughs] Just kidding.

Your music seems to be heading towards a more polished, pop sound with each release. Was this the goal of your art from the beginning, but you now have the skills and label power to complete it?

I think the goal from the beginning was to just play shows. My life for the past eight to 10 years has been going on tour and playing shows every single day for months at a time, going to a different city and playing in front of different people. And the recording process for me? That lasts, like, two weeks. That’s such a quick blip in terms of the artistic experience. So I would never say that that was a goal to make the recording sounds the way that they sound. It was just part of the discovery of the art. I was just trying my best, and when all of a sudden you’re in a room with amazing equipment, and your friends are there and all the time it’s like, “Let’s try to make this sound a little bit better.”

But really the process for me is just one of discovery. It’s not like a projected path, I’m not thinking, “Oh, when I was playing a basement in New Jersey,” or “Oh, I wish this sounded like a Katy Perry song.” Each day happens and it unfolds and you roll with the punches. I think the most important thing is hindsight and looking back and saying, “Okay, that happened. So what did I like? What don’t I like? What do I want to change?” And really every single step and every single part of the process is you just figuring it out.

So, I don’t know the next album in terms of the discovery of myself through the art. It might be a country album or a D.I.Y.-sorta basement style recording. I can just kind of discover [myself] through the music and everybody can listen to it.

To answer your question, it definitely wasn’t a plan to have things turn out this way. I feel like that’s why things happened so positively; because it was never a plan. Everything was awesome and any little experience or accomplishment was the biggest thing that had ever happened to us, even if it was just a tiny, little thing. We just kinda roll with the punches all the way through. I think it would be unfair to give myself the credit of saying this was all a plan.

You kind of built your way up from the bottom — you played D.I.Y. shows and you and the audience were on a peer level where you could have a beer with all eight members of your early shows. Now, you’re selling out large venues and people are tattooing your face on their body. How does it feel like to have gained a cult following?

[Laughs] It’s strange, it’s a strange world. I think that’s part of the whole thing that we were saying — there was no plan, you kinda let the audience decide the plan. That’s why I always take requests on stage, because I’m not up here for myself, I’m not up here for my plan. This is whatever people want.

Like, back in the day, when there would be 10 people at the show, I could drink a beer with every single one of these people and a lot of these people got my face tattooed on them. It’s crazy, it’s a weird experience. I’m still so fucking lucky and I just try and stay naive about the whole thing and just excited about every little step.

I think that’s the best way to do it.

I think so. You can’t plan anything, really, and it’s a bummer, but sometimes it works out. In this particular situation it worked out. It was years of time that I think people would consider it not working out. The six or seven years of time where there was only 10 people coming to the shows. And my family was like, “Okay, what are you doing? You’re still living in the van with Mat…” But for me, I was so happy and so pumped, this was amazing.

So, I think that naiveté of it all was very important. If I had listened to anybody else talk, I wouldn’t be where I am now. You gotta stay positive and do what you want to do. I know it’s hard to be like, “Oh, just stay positive and everything will work out,” but really that’s kinda what happened. Me and Mat just stayed positive and remembered that we were having fun, and how lucky we were to not have to go work at a landscaping job or at a grocery store or something like that. That was the best feeling in the fucking world. You know, like with your writing it’s the same thing, you write articles and people read them. That’s a form of art. That’s incredible.

Thanks. Yeah, it’s nice for people to see what you produce.

Exactly! One time this girl was like, “I want to go around the country and read my poetry to people.” And in a very negative way I was like, “That doesn’t exist, that’s not a real thing.” And she said, “That’s what you do.” And it really hit me like, “Oh my gosh, that is what I do.” And it was like this crazy awakening of, yeah, I shouldn’t be telling people, “That doesn’t exist, that doesn’t happen,” because that’s what everybody was saying to me when I was trying to “read my poetry” around the country.

Now that you’ve been signed to Fueled By Ramen, you guys have been able to add more touring members and build a more elaborate stage setup. You, Mat and Tom are familiar faces on tour, but Jennifer, Roshan and Eric are now a part of the ensemble. What made you choose them?

Basically, Mat. First of all, the people in the band: Roshan, Eric and Jen, are unbelievable musicians. They’re fantastic. They are actual musicians. They are the reason it sounds incredible on stage.

Oh, I agree, it sounds great.

Thank you very much, that means a lot. It’s an experiment, like I was sayin’, we’re trying to figure it out. It’s all over the place, everyone has their style and we’re just trying to put on a good performance.

But basically, Rosh[an] is in a bunch of bands, he played keyboard in a band Mat was good friends with. Mat’s girlfriend was somehow involved. I met Ro[shan] at a bar one night, he was playing bass, and he had come highly recommended from Mat. And then Jen was in a band called River City Extension that we have quite a history with. We’ve known those guys a really long time, and I really wanted a violin player, I thought that would add a lot. And then Eric, we met at the studio. He was a studio rat, just always there, and I was making demos and stuff with him and it turns out he’s really incredible at bass. So we had him play bass and moved Tom over to electric guitar. And he loves to play electric guitar, so he was all about that.

And that’s always how it all comes together. Same with how I met Tom. I met Tom through [former guitarist] Ciaran, eight years ago. He just showed up at my house and Ciaran was like, “This guy plays bass, he’s amazing,” and we heard him play bass and we told him, “Dude, you should be in the band!”. That’s always the way that it’s been. We always try to keep it loosey goosey like that.

Sounds like a good deal. By the way, ‘Champagne Jam’ is taking place where you live: Asbury Park, one of many coastal New Jersey beach towns [like where I’m from]. In your latest single “End of Summer,” and also “Vacation Town” off of Going Grey, you capture the melancholy that comes with the passing of another season. Was that inspired by Asbury [Park]?

Absolutely inspired by Asbury Park. My girlfriend and I, we’re living there right now, so it’s definitely full circle. I wrote a lot of those songs when I was living there. That vibe of the summer time going into the winter time, it is definitely an energy that inspired those songs, absolutely.

Do you feel like that sort of parallels your life? Like you’re entering a new season, or new chapter?

Everything is very personal with my art, even if it’s about somebody else. I’m always drawing from my little perspective in there, especially as a songwriter, I gotta do that. Yes which I’m very grateful and lucky for- in my own theory it’s due to the fact that they “had” me when they were older than most parents, and I’m an only child. I think it is in their nature that there’s a lot of mutual respect between us, but I do think that having a kid when older can help with that.

02: who did you last say “i love you” to? Parents probably, or maybe my friend when we parted ways I can’t remember

03: do you regret anything? Kinda regretting not peeling the celery for this bolognese sauce. In my defense, this is literally my first time actually cooking with celery (don’t really like it on its own so didn’t grow up eating/cooking a lot of it)

It was a good day overall, and then my internship supervisor unexpectedly talked to me after everybody else had left in the office and somewhat officially offered me an extension on my internship (since I’ll of course still be in DC for school this year) which, ahhhhhh so this was something I had been a little bummed about, because I knew that they knew I was going to be in the area even after my internship technically ended, but nobody really brought up whether I could do another internship/continue it with them in the fall and I didn’t want to ask because a) I still have my other job so no internship would just mean that I’m working more and b) I have a pretty good relationship with my supervisors/coworkers and so I didn’t want to put them or me into a position of saying “Well we know you’re in DC still but uh we don’t have an internship for you” so I just left it at not asking, and I knew applications for the fall were already in and they had been talking about it so I figured that was that. So this honestly caught me off guard, and then it was extra sweet because apparently the reason they hadn’t said anything thus far was because my two supervisors were apparently trying to figure out if there was a way for me to work and get paid for it which is just ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh wow that was really just so sweet of them and meant so much to me especially that my supervisor kept stressing that she and her co-supervisor were really pleased and impressed with my work ;;o;; So that really REALLY made my day and I honestly went home smiling all the way on the bus C: And then I had a lot of fun preparing the bolognese sauce and I thought it turned out well which also felt good- especially because I’ve gotten a number of compliments on my food when I bring it in for lunch which really means a lot to me
