Pine Lake Farewell: Hart, Verse, & DeBateau

Ethan ultimately decided he had had enough of local crime boss Armand DeBateau dictating his life, and he went against him by building up his own underground criminal empire. Armand easily disposed of him by tipping off the local authorities, and Ethan went straight to prison for life. Discovering her fiancé had been leading a secret life of lies all this time, DJ had a major breakdown and cut all ties to him. She took their son, Everett, their two cats, and moved in with her best friend, Zoe Zimmerman.

Everett never saw his father again and had a difficult childhood. But an anonymous donor granted him a full scholarship to university where he found he liked learning and built up a much better life for himself.

As for Ethan, he had a few visits from Kiera in prison. She also attempted to meet Everett, but DJ never allowed it. Ethan claimed to accept his sister’s apology, but could never let go of the bitterness that had shaped his life, and eventually she stopped coming. Ferdy never visited.

Armand DeBateau prospered and was untouchable until his death at a ripe old age, surrounded by wealth untold. His daughter Tara was his sole heir and she lived in quiet privacy, donating most of the fortune through scholarship programs. His criminal organization became a power vacuum and crumbled from the inside, though Jessica Peterson did reasonably well for herself by remaining independent.

MY FAVORITE POETRY OF 2024 (Prologue) This was a bit of a different reading year for me. There were plenty of new books that I enjoyed, but I was mostly dipping into (not rereading cover to cover) books I've read before. Also, I've been reading a lot for my Jewish studies, which is time I wasn't reading fiction or poetry. So while I did read a fair amount, the total of that isn't reflected in this annual end-of-year book post.

On the ground level, this was another good year for me. My second full-length poetry collection, Wrong Horse, was published by Moria Books in January. In October, a chapbook of "spooky" poems, There's Nothing Out There, was published by above/ground press. I had ten poems published across five magazines and six more poems accepted for publication and appearing next year. My second book hasn't gotten as many reviews as I'd hoped so far, but I think its release did help me be part of more readings this year, which was very fun (special shout out to the folks who came out for the Wrong Tour dates).

Of course, I wasn't able to read all I wanted to this year--a good problem to have for the future. And, as always, these books are just my favorites, not a best of list.

HLC REACT TO MC'S BABY PICTURES

A spell mishap and Peeves interference had MC frantically running all over Hogwarts trying to collect the photos but they just kept multiplying and flying away.

SEBASTIAN SALLOW: He entirely entertained watching MC run around like a chicken with its head cut off to collect all the photos. He doesn't really understand what they're freaking out about anyway, they're cute pictures. Especially the one where MC wears a pair of trousers on their head.

OMINIS GAUNT: To him the whole thing sounds like someone left a door open and a bunch of leaves were blowing around inside. It's only through the surrounding students that he determines that they were photographs of an embarrassing nature. Heh, He's glad it's not him.

ANNE SALLOW: She stows one away. One of MC proudly holding a bored looking cat like a teddy bear. It was too cute to let it fly away. She'll give it back eventually.

IMELDA REYES: She laughs at MC expense and walks away. This is their problem to solve, she has flying to do.

NATSAI ONAI: She's running around with MC trying to collect the photos. She can't help but stop every once in awhile to admire a good one, though. MC was a really cute baby.

GARRETH WEASLEY: He was eating lunch when one smacks him in the face. He looks at it, chuckles and then goes back to eating. He holds it up for MC to snatch when they come barreling through the Great Hall.

LEANDER PREWETT: He casually goes through the photos that fly to him and he admires them. Not just how cute and funny some of them were but seeing where and how MC grew up. Photos tell a story and he was very interested in it.

AMIT THAKKAR: He tries to help with summoning spells. He collects a few at a time but the photos are multiplying faster than they can catch. They're jinxed!

EVERETT CLOPTON: He's sneaking away from the situation. He was practicing the duplication jinx and accidentally hit MC's photo album. He doesn't even remember why they had it with them. Just that Peeves showed up after the photos burst from the book.

POPPY SWEETING: She just watches the chaos. She's sure jobberknolls hopped up on accelerant potion would be easy to collect. She does see a few photos that settle near her. MC eating cereal out of an expensive looking vase is her favorite.

ELEAZAR FIG: "Peeves! Stop this at once!" Peeves drops the pile of duplicating photos and flies off with a cackle. He nullified the jinx and helped MC clean up. He sees a few photos and smiles to himself. He'd have to ask if he could see them proper some day.

MATILDA WEASLEY: "Aresto Momentum!" With a powerful wave a magic, all the photos stopped dead in their tracks. She looks at MC with slight disappointment. One spell could have fixed all this instead of panicking. "Clean up this mess, I'll handle Peeves." She storms after the poltergeist.

CHIYO KOGAWA: "Well, that's unfortunate." She finds one photo of MC drinking water from a puddle next to the family dog. "Kids..." She chuckles and hands the photo to MC when they run past.

AESOP SHARP: He's mid sip of morning tea when he walks in on the situation. Peeves has done worse. He turns around and walks away from the pandemonium.

ABRAHAM RONEN: He laughs as he joins MC in the chase. "This is fun!" He exclaims like it's just one big game. He will adore MC's pictures, they'll have a hard time getting them away from him without explaining them.

MIRABEL GARLICK: "Peeves! You absolute scoundrel! Stop tormenting the students!" She shoos away the poltergeist and helps MC collect the photos and cancel the jinx. She checks if MC is actually alright. These photos may be embarrassing but they are more than that. They're precious memories.

MUDIWA ONAI: With a wave of her hand, all the photos come to her. She gives Peeves a stern look, which he returns with a loud raspberry, and she hands the photos back to MC. "You should be more careful with these. They may be embarrassing moments now but they are wonderful memories to hold on to. Would you like to see Natty's?" She chuckles.

DINAH HECAT: She sighs and wordlessly waves her wand at Peeves. He stops, drops the photos, and dives through the floor in hast. No one knows what she did but she is one of the few people at Hogwarts Peeves is actually afraid of.

CUTHBERT BINNS: He watches Peeves fly by. He sinks through the floor to the dungeons and finds the Bloody Baron. "He's at it again." The Baron zooms off to do unspeakable things to Peeves.

SATYAVATI SHAH: She quietly collects a few photos after Peeves had his fun and gives them back to MC without a word.

PHINEAS NIGELLUS BLACK: He's just annoyed by the interruption of his day. The poltergeist, the students, they're all so annoying.

What were some books that you read and liked in 2024?

Oh, I haven't reached my reading goals this year due to life eventsTM, but since my pickiness prevents me from investing time or money in random books (I often ask my librarian and a bookseller--whom I trust and who makes nice discounts--for new recs), pretty much everything I've read was to my taste.

Well, there were some exceptions like Murakami's latest book, but let's not go there.

O reboot de "Hora do Recreio" que (ainda) não aconteceu (será?)

Caiu nas graças da internet nos últimos dias uma "bíblia" (documento usado no audiovisual para apresentar personagens, temas, ambientes e outras coisas de uma série em desenvolvimento) para Recess: Next Bell, que seria um spin-off de Hora do Recreio, feita há quase dois anos, em 3 de Junho de 2022.

Ao que parece, ou a Disney+ está analisando os números do clássico, que foi ao ar no Brasil tanto no Disney Channel quanto no SBT (e é uma das minhas séries Disney preferidas), ou os próprios criadores estão muito animados com a possibilidade de retomar a animação. "Nós escrevemos a série original pensando em nossos próprios filhos, por isso ela tem um carinho muito grande", diz o documento. "Fizemos testes com vários grupos de pesquisa, e tudo que pensamos é real: os três grupos adoraram a ideia!"

Os grupos, diga-se de passagem, são a audiência para qual o reboot está sendo escrito: crianças que nunca viram a primeira série, pais que gostam de assistir os episódios com os filhos e adultos (sem filhos) que amam a série e adorariam ver onde estão os personagen.

A ideia de Next Bell é apresentar outro grupo de crianças que frequenta a escola Third Street. Muita coisa mudou e pouca coisa mudou ao mesmo tempo, e a série reconhece isso: Randall, o dedo-duro, será o novo diretor da escola, que está prestes a se tornar uma "penintenciária do aprendizado". A nova gangue decide contar com a ajuda de TJ, que se tornou um adulto rico, preguiçoso e sem vida, para tentar salvar a situação.

O novo grupo de crianças da Third Street é liderado por Ruby, uma garota birracial que é ninguém menos que a filha de SPINELLI e VINCE. E nele há crianças de diversas etinias também: Montijo, o palhaço da turma, é uma criança latina; Parnelli, um skatista que viraliza no YouTube e não tem medo de nada; Simone, uma garota chinesa-americana adotada por um casal gay fã de teatro e que é a "mestre dos disfarces" e Everett, um rapaz afro-americano que é o cérebro do grupo.

E onde está o pessoal da antiga Third Street?

TJ, que ficou milionário da noite pro dia após ser expulso da universidade e inventar um novo tipo de videogame que virou sucesso, precisa de seus amigos para ajudar as crianças. E é aí que ele descobre que Ruby é filha de Spinelli, advogada e bissexual (ela participou de uma banda lésbica de neo-punk que se apresentou no coachella e não apenas teve um rolo com TJ, mas talvez também com a GRETCHEN!), e Vince, que por não ser alto o suficiente para a NFL acaba se tornando comentador esportivo.

Eles então saem em busca dos velhos amigos e descobrem que Gretchen não apenas é uma super cientista que está trabalhando em um combustível a base de areia, mas também é uma super gostosona que mexerá com os sentimentos de TJ. Gus hoje em dia é uma mulher trans, ainda envolvida no exército e que se chama Nikki! Passou por muitos preconceitos, é claro, mas hoje é "a cara do exército" tal qual Gracie Hart em Miss Simpatia 2.

Mikey se tornou um barítono reconhecido mundialmente, mas depois abandonou tudo e virou um guru budista, contraiu uma doença misteriosa e faleceu. Ninguém consegue descobrir seu paradeiro até a gangue aparecer e encontrar, entre seus pertences, uma caixa com anotações que ele deixou para quando se reunissem.

Sim, também fiquei chocado com todos os desenvolvimentos até aqui!

Os grupinhos da nova Third Street também mudaram, até mesmo os garotos do Jardim de Infância, que antes eram primitivos, hoje são rebeldes meio Mad Max da vida. Os escavadores fazem túneis secretos por baixo da cidade, aparentemente, e tem crianças que passam o intervalo tentando hackear sistemas de computadores... o grupo das Patricinhas? Simplesmente inclui garotos e crianças não-binárias também...

...E isso nos faz pensar: a Disney de hoje, sob a tutela do chato de galochas chamado Bob Iger, seria capaz de produzir uma animação onde parte da audiência conta com crianças, tão transgressora e que toca em tantos grupos minoritários?

Não que seu antecessor, Bob Chapek, tenha sido uma luz no fim do túnel: não quiseram fazer uma série de Lizzie McGuire falando sobre uma mulher aos 30 anos, fazendo feio com Terri Minsky mais uma vez...

Talvez seja por isso que a bíblia tenha vazado, para atiçar os fãs a cobrarem a Disney um desenvolvimento da série. Nunca fiquei tão animado com um reboot, e é óbvio que fiquei triste com a morte do Mikey, mas achei algo muito ousado, louco e ao mesmo tempo mais realista que muitos outros reboots como Fuller House, que em determinado momento viveu de recriar cenas icônicas da série antiga.

Queria MUITO que a Disney tivesse colhões para seguir em frente com a série, pois é só observar a própria programação do Disney Channel para ver que o canal se sustentou e se tornou grande em meados dos anos 2000 por fazer produções voltadas a todas as crianças: sempre tinha crianças latinas, negras, judias... todas bem representadas e com suas individualidades e ancestralidades respeitadas.

Mas o Disney+ quer viver de spin-off de Marvel e Star Wars, há anos não lança conteúdo bom e diverso (e não falo nem apenas de diversidade cultural aqui, é porque eles não saem de Marvel e Star Wars há pelo menos cem anos mesmo) e se recusam a atender a demanda do pessoal que assina a plataforma porque cresceu com as produções do Disney Channel...

Thanks for being cool about the CM Punk poll. He's a very polarizing figure, so I really appreciate the fact that everyone was able to keep their tags civil. CM Punk received the third most smash votes to date (358 smash votes, compared to Adam Page's 386 and Eddie Kingston's 365). Punk Also received the 8th most pass votes. He just received a ton more votes than anyone else.

Onto other news, you guys massively prefer older Drew McIntyre (79.3% smash) to young Drew (57.0% smash). Tumblr maintains its reputation for being the "sexualize that old man" website!

I really struggled to find a good picture of Hook for his poll. He looks like my little brother, so it kinda felt like I was perusing my baby brother's thirst traps to show off to all the other horny weirdos on the horny weirdo website. It was easier than looking at all the Boogeyman worm photos, at least.

I'm thinking of running a few demographics polls in addition to the regularly scheduled smash or pass polls. Data on favorite wrestling promotion, sexual orientation, and age might make the poll results more interesting. Feel free to send in suggestions for other questions to ask. I can't promise I'll use all questions submitted by the community, but you guys will no doubt think of something I forget.

I adored this book and I can't get enough of these two. I loved Damon's brothers so much and can't wait to read their books and see what romance awaits them!! This is such a fantastic spicy read and I would absolutely recommend it!!
