Does clover prefer being a monster more, or a human more?

ive been sitting on this question bc ive been trying so hard to think it out and my final answer is: i dont know!

it very much depends. there are upsides and downsides to both; human clover is just what theyre familiar with. its their skin, their body. they were sturdier and didnt have to worry about overworking themselves because of their soul or their now low hp

but monster clover is allowed to be alive. they wouldnt be, without this body. and they can do new things; summon attacks, have cool new limbs like a tail and wings, and they dont have to worry about injuries so much

i think it wavers. some days they’re grateful to their monster body for the new life it lets them live. some days they curse it for its weakness and fragile nature. they miss being human too, of course. they always will. but they live as a monster now, and theyll learn to love that too

someone probably made this before but what if barb survived the demodog thing. what if will was like nearby (i think his house isnt too far from the harringtons seeing as the place his bike was seen, where jonathan was, was near his home enough for him to walk and jonathan heard the screams at the harrington house close enough to run) and heard. like as barb runs will grabs her arm and pulls her along to hide.

they form a weird bond where theyre like “hey i kinda know u from school but not really but we both need to survive this thing so lets stick close, kay?”

lets say they were there for longer than a week (will was there for a week in canon, i think??) and the party at steve’s took place like, 2 weeks after will goes missing.

barb becomes this older sister figure whose worried for this kid because “excuse me you’ve been here since WHEN??”

no matter what they do they always stick close, the other is the only other human being as it seems and its one of the things that keep them sane.

barb is found first (by nancy and jonathan when they were on the hunt to kill the demodog/gorgan whatever thing) and she and nancy get out through the gate. barb is insistent on going back with “will’s still there! he’s all alone we need to go back!” and nancy has to hold her back because “barb no that things still there.” even though jonathan kinda agrees and wants to go through himself to find his brother

the only reason she and will werent together at the time was because they ran into the thing (looking for an exit because if theres a way to go in there Must be a way to go out) and will said he’d come up with something to lure the monster away and insisted they’d meet up there.

when will finds that barb is gone he assumes she’s been taken and mopes and kinda cries cause his effort to get the thing away must have been the reason she was killed. eventually his depression makes him more tired and he gets captured until joyce and hopper find him and barb + will reunion because she insisted that she needed will to know she didnt want to leave out of guilt.

anyways just thinking like. barb had potential to be a major character, plus getting taken to the upside down would have given will in if au where he found her another life form from their world to cling onto and keep going because they’ll get out of here and get home we just have to stay close by.

so first things first their parents. im gonna lay this out, the beta kids and trolls are all greek (EXCEPT sollux hes roman cause his parent has no greek equivalent), and all the alpha kids and trolls are those gods roman equivalents (,,EXCEPT dirk cause he kinda balances sollux being roman out). i havent figured out how thatd happen like 16+ times yet cause in the percy jackson books theres only ever been one instance of two siblings of the same godly descent being greek and roman respectively in HISTORY so like.. i guess th. i guess thats just not a problem in this au

anyway this gets really long so im gonna talk about the beta kids and trolls cause i havent elaborated on the alphas at all ((peep the tags if you wanna see their parents though))

johns the son of zeus, rose is the daughter of athena, dave is the son of apollo, and jade is the daughter of demeter. they were all raised in their respective states, all had to come to new york for various reasons. jades been there the longest, shes been there 9 years and shes been on a couple quests. her biggest accomplishment so far is how she protected the camp from this big vicious angry hellhound that got past the barrier. naturally the girls fluent in Dog Training, so she steps up and instead of trying to kill this thing, she reaches out and tames it as fast as she can. it ends up actually working, and ever since that day she, her cabin, and the camp have a whole bodyguard sleeping right outside the demeter cabin! hes her steed in battle and hes a Very Good Boy. and his name is becquerel

johns the newest kid at camp, he has no idea who he is or why the fuck his school got attacked or why in the hell those anemoi thuellai were so fixated on him or HOW in the hell he absorbed the lightning one threw at him and ended up fine,,, hes just a big mess right now. a big enough mess that when he got claimed by literally zeus, no one else was around, he shrugged it off as some basic magical happening, and he stayed in the hermes cabin far longer than he should have cause no one! fucking knew he got claimed! by zeus of all people! dumbass. he ends up figuring it out though. like an off-hand mention about how this “weird lightning thing appeared above my head a couple weeks ago, haha weird right?” once he figures it out he realizes “hey i might be able to fly” so he sneaks off into the woods to try it. he succeeds fairly quickly but god almighty everyones face the one day the dude just yote himself off a small cliff without warning,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

dave and rose are really tight, theyve been there roughly the same time length, and since their cabins are across from each other they just bother each other all the time. daves the resident Doctor even though he really doesnt look it cause hes got the apollo powers. apollo is the medicine god. so if you wound your stupid ass in battle daves in the ER room patching you up with his glowy hands. rose on the other hand is a very good strategist. shes one of the only athena kids ever recorded to actually have a power - telekinesis. she has no idea how she developed it, she thinks its from birth, but it freaks her out. shes training it though.

so the beta trolls, are also all human(ish). aradias hades kid. but i pulled a pjo trope on her based on one of my favorite characters (im not saying for spoilers, but if you recognize the situation, You Probably Know Who Its Based Off) and aradia died. her mom, the handmaid, had been pulling some Shady Ass Shit and ended up getting herself killed, but aradia tried saving her and ended up going down with her.

so handmaid gets sentenced to the fields of punishment in the underworld, and aradia gets sentenced to elysium, heroes paradise. shes like “no i want my mom to be okay” so they take that away from aradia and they put them both in the fields of asphodel, the neverending grey space for Not So Good But Not So Bad people. her mom becomes a shade (shadow spirit, no human resemblance), as all people do, but aradia. doesnt? and she gets dunked in the fucking river lethe and if you dont know what that does it erases your memory. so she just. comes out of the river like “hello? wgat tae fukc goin on??” but she still remembers one thing. there was an “a” in her name.

tavros is the son of hermes, hes just kinda taken on the role of backup counselor for when the actual cabin counselor is out. hes in a wheelchair, but he also has prosthetic legs for when he needs to actually stand up and fight. hes really good at it too. also catch him in winged converse cause he Owns Those and Uses Them To His Advantage. hes trying his best to keep focused on the camp, cause aradia was his childhood friend, he misses her a whole lot, she never got to camp in the first place. and to his knowledge, shes still dead.

sollux is a janus kid. thats a problem cause janus is roman, and this is a greek camp. he grew up with dave, he showed up with dave, hes been at camp as long as dave. but hes been unclaimed since he showed up so he thinks hes unwanted by whatever parent he has. he knows hes a demigod, he got through the camp barriers, so what the fuck is wrong with him? he also feels shitty cause hes shit at the greek lessons, he cant read a lick of it which literally every demigod without exception should be able to do, he cant name any gods- well, he can, but.. he gets their names mixed up. why does he keep calling poseidon “neptune”? and he has a much, much different way of natural fighting than other kids. they slice, he jabs. he wasnt taught to jab. 

karkat is an aphrodite kid with vitiligo, and to make matters worse, hes ace and on the aro spectrum. to make matters WORSE, the aphrodite kids are kinda notorious for being really shallow, really materialistic, and really mean. karkats been dubbed the “runt” of the cabin, he gets made fun of for his spots to the point where he uses make up and magic to conceal them. worst of all? hes the kid of the goddess of love, for fucks sake. being reminded that “loveless people shouldnt be able to stay in this cabin, mom must have made a mistake claiming you” is kind of.. a blow to the self esteem. long story short he hates aphrodite for claiming him, and would have rather stayed in the hermes cabin. but he eventually goes on this big quest thats vague as fuck right now but Its The Main Plot, he ends up proving to himself that hes worth something and that his siblings are wrong, and my FAVORITE LINE IN THE WHOLE THING i came up with is HIS when he deals a final blow to some big monster: “REMEMBER MY FACE THE NEXT TIME YOU REINCARNATE. MY NAME IS KARKAT VANTAS, I’M THE SON OF APHRODITE, AND LOOKS CAN KILL.”

nepeta isnt anywhere near developed as others are unfortunately, shes a daughter of ares and shes really really good at hand to hand combat. shes small but she leads groups of people in things ranging from camp volleyball games to actual literal wars. shes a tough little shit

kanaya isnt really developed either, i have yet to figure out most of her powers too actually, shes a daughter of iris, the rainbow goddess though. (blatant reference to both kanayas vampirism and. h. her. sh. es ga. gay) ONE THING SHE CAN DO THOUGH is iris message at will without water or drachmas so really shes just everyones go to cell phone and its fucking hilarious cause people just come into the cabin like “KANAYA I NEED TO TALK TO [X]” and shes like “You Better Fucking Pay Me I Am Not Your Personal Cell Phone”

terezi is the daughter of nemesis and she has this really peculiar power she hasnt really gotten the hang of yet. she has synesthesia, so while she cant see she can smell and taste the colors of her surroundings and its really helpful. sometimes though she gets messages from her mom. they dont even come as dreams half the time, they come as almost a different plane altogether. tez has the power to literally tip the scales, pretty much. and when she gets like that, she can see. shes not on earth though, shit on earth stops when shes like that. shes just kinda In Her Own Head, i guess? and in her head she holds the two scales in her hands. she is the arms of the scale. and depending on which one she lifts up, she can literally alter the fate of the battle or happening thats going on By Herself. once she chooses she just whooshes back to real life though and nothing has changed. the only downside? it takes a LOT of energy and cant be exploited for little things. her one thing on her bucket list is to tap into said powers while getting something from a vending machine so like three things will fall out but it hasnt happened yet and shes upset

vriskas a daughter of tyche, the luck goddess, come the fuck on you knew i was gonna, i havent really elaborated on her either and im upset about that. but hey now you get a break from all those fucking paragraphs

equius is a hephaestus kid, and he kinda stays in the background. hes a range fighter, he spends a lot of time in the forge, and even though its been a project looooong since forgotten, hes been excavating the tunnels under cabin nine for years. by himself. he has no idea where they lead, but dammit hes gonna find out where. he has no idea about a certain bunker in the woods though...

gamzees just there for a fucking laugh tbh hes a son of dionysus and i love that cause hes the god of wine and parties and insanity. usually gamzees just zoning out somewhere hes Not supposed to be, and hes not affected by the maenads FUCKED UP BULLSHIT that goes down the forest sometimes. also hes so fucking scared of tavroses wing shoes he tried them on once while he was high and JESUS CHRIST

hello class! today we’re going to learn about growth and the process of healing via zack fair

when zack entered SOLDIER he had bright eyes of optimism whilst having one goal and a dream in mind: to become SOLDIER 1st class and to become a hero just like sephiroth. however the longer he stayed in SOLDIER, the more he realized that hey ..... something isnt Right here. one of those that you cant have emotions attached to missions or the ppl that ur fighting against, that its just a reliability. thats not something he agreed with because he purely focuses with his emotions, whether it could be his downfall or not. he feels immensely, whether its anger towards himself or sympathy; something so trivial as emotions will jeopardize the mission (ie a mission to go search for angeal). 

and unfortunately, being as young and impressionable as he was, it was very easy for him to be manipulated by his higher ups (because of his intense enthusiasm and wanting to please his superiors) and not be able to form opinions of his own, lest they get tested and make himself doubt his loyalty to shinra. which is why he had no problem with going to wutai and trying to overtake fort tamblin, he was told wutai is the enemy of shinra. they’re the bad guys, without ever being told the reason why. like why did shinra name wutai as their enemy? why are they going at war with them?

his perception was warped by the toxic ideals and goals that shinra and SOLDIER had, even though his guy he knew it was wrong and that he should question those of higher power than him. 

it also took too long to realize that shinra, at the face, is a company and state helps the people and protect midgar from terrorists and others that dare face against shinra. that underneath, they were making monsters with an ancient alien that landed on earth years and years ago. he doesnt know why; doesnt know anything about the ‘promised land’ theyre searching for. he doesnt know anything about their goals of creating beings from jenova, g, and s - cells. the fact of the matter is, theyre stealing away innocent people just so shinra can experiment on them (and they all worked for shinra ie SOLDIER 3rd and 2nd class when genesis took them with him; probably others than he cant imagine).

being hit with the information that genesis is degrading from the g - cells and angeal being born from the result of experimentation from gillian, the clouds started to fade away from his eyes and hes actually surprised that the ppl that know this are okay with it. like it was common knowledge, which it wasnt! he didnt know anything about this! the fact that angeal knew about this and didnt tell him, he felt hurt and betrayed. he was blindly following in his footsteps of embracing your SOLDIER honor and your dreams, that the fact he was proud and happy that he was working for shinra! meanwhile they had secret labs scattered about banora, modeoheim, and nibelheim that these experiments were going on!

at this point, zacks faith in shinra is fading and his dream is being pushed to the back burner even when he does eventually become a 1st class. no thanks! you can keep it. not like he had a chance but accept it. when hes forced to kill angeal, theres a mix of emotions: intense sadness because he looked up to angeal and admired him greatly, with his skills and such inspiring ideals; and even tho he can handle himself without angeal, he felt like he was the last pillar in SOLDIER that he had. he also felt relieved and hurt, zack doesnt forget him keeping all this information of human experimentation a secret while zack was looking with a naive lense to wanting to protect the people. relieved in the sense that angeal was probably hurting and was rapidly degrading if the grey hair and pale skin at his death was any indication.

being inherited the buster sword wasnt something he took proudly, it was a heavier weight on his shoulders the point where was sagging. he felt the least he could do was become those that ppl looked up to as well. even tho he carries a piece of angeal, he just couldnt accept what he had tried to push onto him. SOLDIER honor, there wasn’t a thing that existed at this point. trying to convince himself that SOLDIER doesnt mean monster, he couldnt kid himself that it meant monster. 

during this time, he goes to the church and accept consoling from aerith. altho he doesnt talk about what happens, or what hes experiencing / feeling which eventually becomes his downfall. as a way to make himself feel better, he visits the church, immediately feeling calmed, but however with so much weighing on his mind, promising aerith to build the wagon for her flowers becomes half-hearted. he thinks this is enough to try and hes the burden he was inherited, to push away the trauma of having to kill his mentor and watching him die, and fighting monsters, that were at some point, people---  even to the point of no longer wanting to be a part of SOLDIER. ofc this doesnt work and isnt a viable way to cope with his experiences. 

being last straw is when he fights sephiroth when he burns down nibelheim. that was someone he looked up to and trusted, he joined SOLDIER wanting to be like him. except now hes dragged cloud and tifa into this whole mess, and he feels incredibly responsible for not intervening sooner. he shouldve seen the signs that it wasnt going to end well, but he gave him the benefit of the doubt, hoping that he wouldnt be like genesis and angeal (which he was wrong). witnessing that sephiroth was kept these very important and crucial details, made him realize it doesnt matter how important or popular you are in shinras eyes; if theres any hint that someone could retaliate, they will keep it a secret until its convenient for them. this severed anything else positive he felt for shinra.

he doesnt even realize he was put in a pod for 4 years (only assuming its been a couple of weeks at most), still imaging that hes 18 when he now has to physically free himself from shinras grasp. even while hes asleep, the nightmares and visions of angeal wouldnt waver. even though he could choose to leave cloud alone in the pod with severe mako poisoning, he didnt want to. cloud was his friend, and he felt solely responsible for him to be pulled within the crossfire. cloud wanted to join SOLDIER, well this was the reality. he couldnt even fight for himself or eat; but he was alive and that was good enough for zack. zack has this pushed guilt onto his conscious, so he makes sure to bring cloud with him everywhere he went, even casually talking to him like he can actually respond back. 

he doesnt even realize the reality that he wasnt a respected member of SOLDIER, by the words of hojo, they were both fugitives and even though zack was still asleep in that pod, he was so tired; emotionally, physically, and mentally. this whole thing, he had to see through, if not for himself, then for cloud. at least get him to midgar and try to continue living a separate part shinras greedy hands. there were certain times while trying to avoid shinra and hide, that he could just end himself several times, but clouds existence was a constant reminder that they both managed to live, besides he owed cloud so much, so ridding himself off wouldnt do them nearly enough good. 

so seeing genesis again got him angry, that he couldnt even blame him for the reason this was happening. whether genesis wanted to capture hollander to help further shinra in experimentation, it wasnt going to stop what was going on underneath the surface. seeing lazard with angeals face really made him weak at the knees, physically made him sick, and feeling temporarily relieved (which he doesnt forget of the fact that angeal is dead, that this isnt actually him but lazard who absorbed his cells).

and finally beating genesis, he still felt angry with only a small semblance of sympathy. even with his soft heart, he couldnt help but feel bad for him, going thru such great lengths just because he was a failure of an experiment and wanted to live longer than what he got. this wasnt genesis’ fault, it was shinras and that just made him more frustrated. 

and while hes with cloud, riding to midgar, he once again tries to push the anger, hurt, and frustration at the back of his mind to tell cloud silly stories while he was still in SOLDIER, and what he thought about cloud upon meeting him for the first time, and that feelings of doubts that hes sorry that cloud has to travel with a monster. with coming across the shinra army, he realized this was a final stand, being physically exhausted (even w the mutated s and mako infused cells, he doesnt feel nearly as strong as he did before). even though he no longer holds up the honor of SOLDIER, he needs to protect cloud and his own honor that hes built as a person, and nothing else.

when he succeeded by the skin of his teeth, he wonders why hes still alive, why hes still breathing, even though its hard. he lost sight in one eye, but he doesnt even realize how, everything happened so fast. was he shot? was he stabbed? who knows, but taking cloud to midgar while hes sitting on deaths edge himself, he will take cloud back even if it kills him. there are people there waiting for him, unlike zack--- no one is waiting for him to come back, the people that hes looked up to has died, or see him as a traitor. perhaps, you could count his parents, but hes so ashamed to see them face to face. he feels like if he did, he would break down. his cell phone has long ago stopped working, so who knows if anyone has sent him anything during the time of his slumber. he doesnt even know that kunsel is waiting for him to come back.

during this whole time, hes held in his feelings and emotions, shouldering all this himself. he hasnt talked to anyone previously about his trauma, the nightmares that prevent him from sleeping, or his doubt. being in the sector 7 slums and being taken care of, he puts on a false face that everything is okay, but it cracks when he hit his brink. crying and screaming, yelling how none of this is fair and how he shouldve been dead. he doesnt why hes alive but hes so tired. he was fully planning to die when he faced shinras army, not even thinking how to why, if there even is a reason. even though tifa and marle kindly provided him a room to rest in, theres a momentary frenzy where there are several deeply punched in walls, even unleashing his sword in blinded frustration. 

hes never been taught that it was okay to share your feelings, and being swallowed by the toxicity of SOLDIER, he felt as if it was weak to ask for help. hes encouraged and is told several times, while being in the slums, that its okay. theres always an ear to be lend to if one needs to talk about their woes, or something that deeply troubles them. not to mention, he has a hard time accepting that so much time as passed, that so much as changed and almost so many people forgot about him. hes lost so much of his younger years by SOLDIER, the lost of mental growth by being in a god damn mako infused pod. he needs to catch up, now finding home in the sector 7 slums (altho apologizing and insisting that he fix up the room that he ruined. it gives him something to do and he fees bad for destroying that was so graciously offered from kindness).

he spends his time around avalanche and tifa, not only trying to help up from the wounds he endured, but trying to move on. find easier methods to cope and deal with the stress in healthy ways thats not dangerous self destruction to himself and those around him. hes slowly coming to the conclusion that hes not a monster that hes so insisted on, but a victim and pawn of SOLDIER and shinra. hes angry at shinra. hes upset, frustrated, aggravated, among other emotions towards the former company hes worked for.

and even though this healing process is still slow, hes becoming much more happier than has been before. he finds home in the slums, and those people that has so welcomed him, even though untrusting because of his previous affiliation with SOLDIER. he loves the people, quickly befriending the entire sector 7 slums. 

hes come a long way since coming back to midgar, from self loathing and a weak, nearly broken spirit to his back optimistic, naturally smiling self that people love to be around. he has given shinra a lot, but he wont let them take away a person he was so proudly being before he entered SOLDIER, albeit still immature with mentality that hes still 18.

Various Horrorfell Things

-Amp can paralyze people temporarily by biting them, the closer to the nervous system and the harder she bites them the more effective (but they can still use magic and their internals still work, it just freezes them in place. So they can yell and things)

-Shanx ends up expanding his territory to the ruins after finding out that their strongest was taken out and they were in general discord on the other side of the door (Amp would sometimes slip through the door to supplement her quota ) it was surprisingly easy, so now he controlled Snowdin and the surrounding Snowlands as-well as the Ruins and Home. Amp stopped going to the ruins after that

-Muffet has the most territory of all the leaders, she’s the one that took over New Home along with various areas we don’t see in-game

-Muffet and Shanx end up with a sort of give and take alliance thanks to Amp helping out the ruins spiders and growing a relationship with them (info and other things for resources) so basically it transferred from a relationship between underlings to the full group

-Above ground, when the leaders form the monster council, in an alternate universe where other AUs have already reached the surface ;

Cron and Muffet once conspired to win some bets each of them had placed. Muffet bet Undyne that SF’s Queen would get violent and promised 15% of the bet to Cron if he riled her up. Black (who is her guard at the moment) remarked that Shanx was the only serious one there, but then he motioned to Undyne, who then had to give him even more g then she gave to muffet. He bet that Amp would be there, while Undyne thought the ‘Pest’ would’ve run off by then. No one but Muffet and the residents of Snowdin are aware that Amp is his kid. {The queen threw a fireball that was blocked, because apparently when you use Anty’s flies as a conduit you can produce a barrier with even the smallest bits of Kindness. (Idk I was daydreaming, imma say it was in part because practice and also Toriel so the two of them really wanna protecc when she’s involved. And since Kindness was Amp’s original trait and current secondary she still can use it kinda- why not) }

-also in this weird conversion AU, Shanx and Cron are chilling with their variants in a pseudo required vacation for a rundown of how things work and to get to know about the other mountains and monsters and vice versa. Red steals Shanx’s phone cause he thinks the guy gets too many business calls and this is supposed to be a vacation damnit! (he is technically in politics so I imagine they’re busy) Throughout the night he gets many texts. Red ends up checking one when the night winds down thinking it was his phone, and comments that ‘oh hey Shanx- didn’t know you had a S/O’ cause he got a text like ‘Hope ya’ll are having fun, everything’s all good back home. Night I love you!’ And he’s just kinda like- Ew no. To which Red presses and it’s like ‘Oh, no that’s my daughter’ and it’s just a solid minute of silence before someone (either Blue or Mag) yell out ‘YOU HAVE A DAUGHTER!?!?’ And so questions- cause they’re all 20-35 ish and are just kinda like what??? Since when??? So he has to explain that no, he doesn’t have a wife/girlfriend/SO she’s adopted and is -infact- old enough to be left at home alone (and that she’s with Grillby and Fuku anyways, theyre all stuck together cause they need to recover)

-(no longer in that crazy above ground) Amp had 3 noteable brushes with death, the first was when her wounds from Toriel got infected (they learned to pick up plenty of burn cream and bandages and have her wash up in the water at the edge of waterfall regularly).

-Then a close call with Undyne where she learned that even paralyzed monsters can use magic and got hurt real bad running away. Luckily she made it to Snowdin so when some opportunistic monsters tried to pick her off Papa Shanx was there and dragged her inside after ordering Cron to get rid of her tracks. (She deliriously called him Papa cause his name is hard and so is talking in general, she also may have said that she doesn’t wanna die and leave them like that- it was a wake up moment cause ‘oh shit I care about the little human’) It was during recovery after this incident that Shanx imposed a new rule, She’s not allowed to die. If she doesn’t break this rule then when they get to the surface she can call him Papa again (IT’S HURT CONFORT FLUFF BABBEYYY) she passes out and doesn’t know if she hallucinated that or not but she does cause found family

-And then the third time was also with Undyne. Before then things had been happening where Fuku was and she wasn’t doing so good, at threat of falling down (a close friend got dusted trying to get more things for them) so Grillby was making Amp take more of his cut of resources to her than normal, basically the whole thing. So he wasn’t doing so good either. Also previously one of the Snowdin locals had dusted and she didn’t take it so well (she feels guilty cause ‘she’s supposed to go before any of them do’ in her mind). So Undyne gets her real bad on her way back to rendevue with Grillby after supplying Fuku, and she ends up getting found and helped by a survivor group of humans. Seeing this leads into the next point

-Amp leaves the Snowdin Group for these survivors, Why? Because she sees this as her opportunity to break the barrier before anyone else she cares about dusts. They’re a fairly large group and she manages to convince them to travel to New Home and break the barrier to leave. She plays up her small and injured state, making them think that unless they do she’ll probably die without seeing the sky again and that they’d likely end up the same. She also tells them she knows they can do it cause she had holed up in the Snowdin library and had read a few things. So basically she manipulated them into breaking it to release the monsters. She sent Anty away to tell the others of her plan (to inform them and also erase any possible connection between her and monsters) she also asked a spider to tell the leaders that they should consider coming together and quelling the riots and all out battle in/outside of the castle before they do- sending this message after she convinces the humans to do it. So when they eventually do it won’t be a rush of lone monsters running loose and ruining whatever chance they have at peace on the surface.

-Despite her reasoning Amp constantly feels bad about her choice and thinks that when they meet back up in the throne room they’ll hate her for leaving. This is because she’s scared of them leaving her behind and the fact that she left them makes her feel worse and extra hypocritical

-Meanwhile Shanx, while seeming perfectly calm and like he has complete faith in her, has been STRESSING THE FUCK OUT cause that’s his DAUGHTER and oh fuck what if she needs him or gets hurT OR DIES SANS HOLY FUXK WHAT DO I DO!? (Cron is much less stressed cause like, Its not official (YET)but she’s you’re kid so obviously it’s gonna work???) So he is fucking ecstatic when they do meet back up- like yeah the barrier is broke BUT NEVER DO THAT AGAIN OR YOU’RE GROUNDED YOU ABSOLUTELY RECKLESS FUCKING IDIOT so they got to all see the sky together, Amp remarks that she’s never seen the stars and galaxy so clearly before.

yeah me and @ectoviolet were talking about exactly that last night like its great to be like "guess what, you have a death prophecy and also horcruxes to deal with" when harry's already miles deep in the whole mess and cant back out even if he wants to, like, he has the whole self-sacrificing hero instinct apparently so its not as though he would refuse his Fate if dumbledore had ever bothered to at least tell harry what he was already masterminding into action for him. but he wants to put harry through it to train him up or something yet also neglects to tell him about his fate because he wants harry to enjoy himself a while longer? he has exactly 1 voldemort-free schoolyear and spends the whole time thinking he might be murdered anyway due to voldemort-related reasons. like dumbledore sees shit going on thats gonna cause problems for other people and just keeps it to himself until it boils over and he goes "yes i knew it all along and maybe planned for it at the expense of others and possibly myself sometimes" also, the one year voldemort wasnt breaking into hogwarts was the only year he managed a competent datda hire. i cant believe the explanation for him hiring gilderoy lockhart was wanting to provide a life-lesson that like, just because someone is a boastful celebrity doesn't mean theyre competent. you know what wouldve been a better lesson dumbledore. a year-long proper course's worth of education. then youve got a literal death eater and then umbridge wasnt exactly hired by him and then snape who shouldnt be teaching anything plus i know the jinx or whatever but lupin shouldn't have only taught one year. like, dumbledore shouldnt have put lupin in a position where the latter thought he would lose his job if anyone knew he's a werewolf. like, he has the power to keep his own damn employees at school. he even makes sure trelawney gets to stay at the castle after she's fired. first of all, there has to be a better way to accommodate a werewolf than putting it in a shed and telling people theres scary ghosts there. especially when that werewolf is as young as when lupin was actually a student. but whatever. if dumbledore cant find the power to protect his staff from discrimination inside and outside the school then what is he even doing. at least let lupin stay at the school too instead of like in the woods or whatever he has to manage. maybe he could create some jobs by staffing the kitchens with paid humans instead of free elf labor and he knew both harry and voldemort had nightmare childhoods and to both of them he's like oh whats up yer a wizard and then dumps them in magic school and lets them do whatever. and he left harry to be abused for 11 yrs, when he couldve been raised by hagrid and lived on the heavily protected hogwarts grounds and been perfectly fine. but whatever. meanwhile voldemort was literally a student in dumbledore's school and nobody did a damn thing about him being evil. maybe lupin couldve been a school counselor because they could really use one, dumbledore sure doesnt give a shit about not leaving all his students on their own. like, its supposed to be all like wise and knowing that he realizes all along in hbp that he's gonna be murdered, but he doesn't do anything because he knows he'll die anyway and he's planned for snape to do it. and in the meantime people are getting caught up in the crossfire and surviving assassination attempts and eventually death eaters end up in hogwarts and all because dumbledore just wanted to wait it out? like, he's all saying he didn't want to let voldemort know he knew about draco's assignment, but? first of all, he's hiding all this order of the phoenix stuff and this "snape is a quadruple agent" stuff from voldemort and he can't hide a nice chat or two with a 16 yr-old dumbass who is becoming more disillusioned with voldemortery by the day and having bathroom crises halfway through the year? no offense but that's not at all useful to offer him clemency when he's pretty much managed to succeed and has a bunch of death eaters about to barge in on the conversation. (sidenote draco saw there were two brooms and why didnt he know harry was there when he'd seen harry use his invisibility cloak on the train, anyways) not only is draco causing all sorts of problems for all of hogwarts but he is also like physically ill from the stress of dealing with death eater stuff and catching on that he and his family will be killed and he's a student after all. but again dumbledore wouldnt care about that and he's like "i knew you were up to this all along, btw do you want to trust me to provide you sanctuary from voldemort" and its all wise and shit. like, you had that one year where a monster was running around loose for like months, come up with some excuse how draco died and you can buy everyone a little time and maybe save a few people a few near death encounters. christ anyways. all of dumbledore's wisdom is just him saying "my hindsight is 20/20" and his benevolence is being definitely great at outscheming everyone. he's so ends justify the means guy sometimes and it sure took him a while to get over his magic supremacy thing. but most of all, voldemorts existence is entirely his fault. it's exactly like the bit in a very potter sequel where dumbledore says "oh severus, these things just tend to blow over. it was like that time when everybody was complaining, 'hey, dumby, you have to expel tom riddle from hogwarts cuz he's evil,' and i just told em to stuff it, and eventually everything just worked itself out." like all the jokes about dumbledore not giving a shit about the huge problems around him are really just accurate portrayals of the guy tldr dumbledore does Not deserve his benevolent reputation. the guy is just about if not more dangerous than voldemort, who didnt have a hand in bringing about the rise of other supremely powerful dark wizards who wanted to kill those deemed impure, which is something dumbledore managed to do twice

The Dark, Twisted Fairy Tales ‘Beauty And The Beast’ Is Based On

A wealthy merchant falls into penury after his ships founder at sea. He moves his family to the countryside to live a more frugal lifestyle. His six daughters and six sons resent the loss of their comfortable life, their social engagements, and their many admirers. His youngest daughter, Beauty, is the only one to make the best of the circumstances, throwing herself into the daily upkeep of the home in order to keep the family clean and fed. Her older sisters, who are less beautiful and less dutiful, resent her, and they mock her for contenting herself with menial work.

Then, the merchant receives a welcome surprise: One of his ships, thought to be lost at sea, has come safely to harbor with its full cargo. His children think their fortune will surely be restored. When he sets out for the city to deal with his freight, he takes with him requests from his sons and daughters for expensive clothes and other gifts. Only Beauty is hesitant to ask for a gift, and finally asks that he bring her a single red rose.

Now is the story starting to sound familiar? One more hint: A live-action film based on the fairy tale is hitting theaters this week.

Like so many fairy tales, Beauty and the Beast has evolved considerably during its journey from oral tradition to the page to the screen. Moreover, there is not only one literary version but dozens. Today, Disney-fied fairy tales are most familiar to the masses in their animated forms; the originals, when revisited, can seem comparatively brutal and dark.

Unlike Disneys Cinderella and Snow White, however, Beauty and the Beast hardly sugarcoats the violence of the original. Its literally a romance between a captive woman and the monster she at first believes might physically attack her.

Still, the original fairy tale might not sound terribly familiar to readers.

The definitive, most well-circulated version, La Belle et le Bte, was composed byJeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont and published in 1756. Her story, a short and sweet tale with a small cast of archetypal characters the ingnue, the loving yet hapless father, the protective brothers and jealous sisters, and the hideous but noble-hearted hero.

Thats right: Though Disneys Belle is an only child, in the classic tale she has siblings. Unsurprisingly, her sisters serve the role of foils for Beauty. Shes gorgeous, theyre merely average-looking; shes generous, theyre selfish and envious; shes hardworking, theyre lazy; shes well-read, theyre frivolous:

The youngest, as she was handsomer, was also better than her sisters. The two eldest had a great deal of pride, because they were rich. They gave themselves ridiculous airs, and would not visit other merchants daughters, nor keep company with any but persons of quality. They went out every day to parties of pleasure, balls, plays, concerts, and so forth, and they laughed at their youngest sister, because she spent the greatest part of her time in reading good books.

In Beaumonts story, Beautys father, a ruined merchant, stumbles upon the Beasts castle when returning from a futile trip to recover profits from a trading ship that unexpectedly returned to harbor. Caught in a storm, he takes refuge in a mysterious castle where he meets no one, but finds food, a fire, and a bed prepared for him. When he leaves, he takes a single rose from the garden to bring Beauty which brings the Beasts wrath down upon him. In exchange for his life being spared, he agrees to return with one of his daughters. Beauty agrees to go, though shes fearful that the monster will eat her.

Instead, shes given a lavish chamber and plied with good food and constant entertainments. She never sees anyone except in the evening, when the Beast joins her for dinner. She enjoys his sensible conversation, but every night he asks her to marry him, and she refuses. Finally, after several months, she admits that while shes quite attached to him, she misses her family. The Beast allows her to return home for a visit, but warns that if she delays her return, he will die of grief.

This is where the sisters get extra vicious! Jealous of the finery Beauty wears upon her return, they overwhelm her with affection so that she will miss her deadline, assuming that the Beast will kill her and eat her in his anger. Instead, Beauty returns late and finds the Beast dying of sadness. Seeing him on his deathbed, she realizes that she loves him and begs him to live and marry her. Immediately, he is restored to his handsome, princely self and Beauty is rewarded for choosing a virtuous husband over a handsome or witty one. Her sisters are condemned to be living statues outside the castle, forever viewing their sisters better fortune.

OK, sure, this isnttoo different from Disneys take. But this is only the beginning. It turns out that Beaumonts fairy tale was an abridged adaptation of a 1740 story written byGabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve very abridged.

Villeneuves La Belle et le Bte features monkeys that speak via parrot interpreters (they serve Beauty and keep her company in the palace), five jealous sisters and six brothers, and an exhaustingly elaborate backstory revealed at the conclusion of the tale involving ugly evil fairies attempting to force handsome princes into marriage, baby princesses being snatched from the cradle, and both fairy and human political struggles for power.

The didactic message of the story is also more heavy-handed, and more retrograde: Beauty has an imaginary lover, a handsome prince who speaks to her in her dreams; in the same dreams, shes visited by a lovely woman who urges her to look past superficial qualities. Beauty has fallen in love with her dream prince, but the longer she stays with the Beast, as he has demanded, the more sympathetic she feels toward him. Though the Beast in Villeneuves version is not only hideous but has been cursed to stupidity, and can barely carry on a conversation, she feels more and more guilty that she doesnt marry the Beast out of gratitude for the opulent life hes provided for her and the love he feels for her. Finding him dying of grief:

She regretted her conversations with the Beast, unentertaining as they had been to her, and what appeared to her extraordinary, even to discover she had so much feeling for him. She blamed herself for not having married him, and considering she had been the cause of his death … heaped upon herself the keenest and most bitter reproaches.

Its worth noting that the Beast himself spurned the love of an ugly fairy who fell in love with him. She curses him in retaliation, imprisoning him in a beasts body but while this makes her the villain of the story, Beasts imprisonment of the woman he hopes to marry is painted as kind and generous. Belle isnt granted the luxury, like the Beast, of rejecting an unattractive suitor; shes expected to learn to accept his love. Ultimately, she decides to marry him because she owes him and is fond of him, proving her virtue by denying her own desires and choosing instead a man whos earned her through his love and gifts.

In short, the Beast may have been the original Nice Guy!

Those two stories dont cover the full breadth of Beauty and the Beast tales. Some believe the roots go back thousands of years, and many cultures have some variety of the story.

In the Italian rendition, The Pig King, written in the mid-16th century by Giovanni Francesco Straparola, a queen is cursed to have a son who appears as a pig until hes been married three times.When hes grown, his mother convinces the first daughter of a poor family to marry him, but the girl is horrified at the match and tries to kill him on the wedding night. He tramples her with his hooves, killing her instead. The same happens to her younger sister. Then he marries the virtuous youngest sister, who is kind and accepting of her new husband. At night he reveals himself as a handsome young man to her, and the couple eventually rules the kingdom together. Yes, despite the fact that he literally stabbed her two sisters to death with his hooves, the girl falls in love with him.

A truly bonkers Norwegian fairy tale, East of the Sun, West of the Moon, stars a white bear who convinces a peasant to give him his youngest,prettiest daughter. At night, he comes and sleeps with her as a man, though she cant see him. One night, she lights a candle to see his face, but drips hot tallow on him and wakens him. As a consequence, he has to marry his evil stepmothers choice for him: a troll princess. But his young lover refuses to give up, following him to the troll kingdom and winning his hand through trickery at which point the troll princessexplodes in rage. (Literally, she explodes.)

In many of these older versions, Beauty is distinguished most by her docility and selflessness. Even her bookishness, so heavily played up by Disney, is merely one aspect of her dutiful feminine lifestyle she plays a variety of instruments, enjoys art and the theater, and amuses herself in the country by dress[ing] her hair with flowers when shes not cheerfully caring for the home. Other female characters who privilege their own desires are portrayed as spoiled and even cruel, and aside from elevating Beauty as the one deserving woman, they often serve the function of disposable vessels for male needs (see: those two poor women who are trampled to death by a pig).

The Beast might prove his worth through devoted love, but Beauty proves hers through submerging her own passions and awarding herself to the most worthy suitor. The message is clear: Women should love the ones theyre with, no matter how seemingly repulsive its all part of the life of extreme self-sacrifice that makes them worthy of happiness and respect.

Disneys Beauty and the Beast tweaked this story, making Belle an unconventional bookworm with an independent streak rather than a pretty, submissive maiden. It relegated the unsympathetic, frivolous female role to a chorus of silly village girls who swoon over Gaston, rather than making a cruel sister central to the story. Emma Watson, who portrayed Belle in Disneys live-action remake, has openly hinted that the new, updated heroine will be still more brilliant and self-reliant.

Certain aspects of the story, though, will remain and some of the most shocking and controversial aspects of the story are the very plot points that make it Beauty and the Beast.When it comes right down to it, every version is essentially the same story: A beautiful woman redeems her hideous captor with her love parrot/monkey servants optional.
