Someone brought an overhated character poll to my dash about Kai Winn and im literally so sad about the responses. I knew there were people who hated her but it's really baffling to me how maybe 10 people tops acknowledge her past and the reasonings behind her choices, they just see a space Karen.

oh dude, i'm sorry that sucks. and "sad" really is a simple but fairly complete word when it comes to the character of winn adami, huh.

like. i think a lot about how she's the most normal-looking woman on the show. she is also, simply, normal. she is faithful and political and appears and acts in ways far more familiar to us than most characters. even the fact of her alien-faith hardly serves to alienate, given that she is faithful in the way we might be--without true expectation of ever meeting the divine in this life. while kira can seem more like a fictional character when she speaks of the prophets, due to her proximity to them, winn sounds like the person accosting you on a street corner to talk about the rapture.

that's the thing, though, isn't it. about the "karen" phenomenon in general. there is nothing uniquely bad about middle-aged white women--nothing that makes them uniquely ungovernable in social spheres in ways men aren't. in ways everyone isn't, in some way. (merely anecdotal evidence, but my own experience in the service industry made me far more wary of men in their 30s wearing patagonia vests over dress-shirts). winn adami is a normal sort of frustration to people. one they encounter in the day-to-day. the political conservative who stands outside of planned parenthood and tells girls not to throw away their everlasting souls. the pentecostal women speaking gibberish in church, gesturing to the heavens with their out-of-fashion french manicures, who brought a tater-tot hot dish with extra kraft cheese to the pot luck. the women with cross-walls. with like. so many crosses. the women with leathery tans on the aging skin of their arms and neck. the women who quietly walk into voting booths around the world and choose "safety" over anything else, whether or not that "safety" is real.

at least. that's who people think winn is. setting aside the fact that most people don't truly know the kinds of women listed above, that it's unlikely they've spared a single ounce of pity for women like that ever in their entire lives, winn is not exactly pitiable in this way. she is awash in power. she is intelligent. she thinks. she would stand in a voting booth and choose "safety" (whether or not it's real) but she's not the lady wearing a t-shirt that says trump could grab her pussy if he wanted. she's not one of the many blonde women on fox news. she's not even sandra day o'connor or any other female conservative intellectual. because she's a metaphor.

we don't know her real-world politics because she's a fictional character in a fictional universe leading a fictional world. we know she's a conservative because fights very very hard to maintain the status quo regarding her bajoran religion and its teachings. but we don't know how any of that can be truly allegorized to conservative policies in the real-world. the main tension being: conservatives in the real-world base a lot of truly evil policy on a made-up divine figure interpreted through thousands of made-up hermeneutics and it is materially all Not Real. in ds9, the prophets are actual beings who affect reality. winn's said and done things on the show that sound like something an annoying woman with a turquoise-cross around her neck would say at a utah city council meeting about creationism and "inappropriate books." she also says things that a woman would say at a protest against the racist and paternalistic policies of the british museum. all we know of her as a political figure is that she is conservative. and like, power-hungry and desperate, but those aren't essentially related. she wants to conserve. and that encompasses more than one thing.

which means that people, when they see her, simply aren't thinking. they react to a woman who looks as she does. who speaks like a politician. who makes decisions that are unfair. but, exactly as you said, the show grounds her. they give her a past. they richly flesh out so much about her. they have her acting too rationally sometimes for someone of her professed faith. they have her acting completely irrational as her gods reject her again and again. all while she clings to them with a faith that endured actual torture at the hands of violent imperialists who yet attack her planet and yet attack her and yet she has to speak with as the leader of bajor.

and it's hard to see (beyond the obvious) why this character receives so much vitriol when you have characters like garak and dukat and kira who all are considered charming and beloved in some way or another, while still being as complex as they are. (and i don't even think dukat is all that complex.) even sisko has some moments that, if i lived in his world, i would be somewhat repulsed by--like when jake begs him to let the prophets go and sisko embraces the cosmic over the request of his son. (again: the prophets are real though, so my "repulsion" is more a reaction against people i see as priests, who i find in the real world, as a rule, awful.)

so. it's definitely sad. because the level and kind of hate bestowed upon this character really does seem to be a symptom of a much larger issue: of course, misogyny.

also that people don't tend to think.

this is because if meta crisis ten/tentoo does come back, there needs to be a reason why he is there alone. we saw what he does when hes alone and only one person attempts to stop him: he starts blowing shit up. doctordonna AND jackie couldnt stop him from basically being a bomber the whole time.

it'll mull him, not harden him or make him go evil like every predictable fanfic whenever rose dies and hes evil and blah blah. it'll ground him. and i dont want it to be like: oh rose passed away! Any way lets- no.

I want it to where the Doctor doesn't realize something is wrong beyond just tentoo being back. It would be the last thing he would think, the one thing they would never come to the conclusion to. I mean, for us it was decade or so ago but for the doctor, that was essentially billions of years ago. That was just plucked stray eyelash from two years ago in comparison.

And tentoo is keeping up appearences. Even says present tense verbs "she is doing great, she is currently so and so doing whatnot" but then it starts being noticeable. Bit by bit. tentoo and pete was there (yes surprise guest star shaun dingwall) and the look of horror on their face when they both rush out only for it to be too late.

but it gets tentoo to stop being trigger-happy. Yes, he gets hurt, but the reason the reveal happens is him saying something along the lines of 'i can't make my daughter into an orphan'

because if moffat gets a hold of that, he's gonna make stone rose a reality in the most cruellest way of killing off rose. The panic over decadence, that the West was vaguely on the decline and needed to culturally rejuvenate if it was to survive, was even more widespread and diffuse in late nineteenth-century Europe than the specific panic over degeneration and affected pretty much all the new philosophical, political, spiritual, etc developments of the era in a wave of civilizational soul-searching (the fin-de-siècle), from Nietzsche to Sorel to Blavatsky. The two concepts have definitely always been intertwined but at least from what I’ve seen of interwar fascist movements, which were obviously products of that fin-de-siècle cultural crisis, it was actually much more common for them to attribute the ills of liberal society in the 1920s–30s to decadence than to degeneration. 1. james forced lily into dating/marrying/etc him 

this literally never happened? because its almost as if lily is her own person who is able to stand up for herself-

-and so she would not allow someone to walk all over her. its almost as if james (canonically) matured as a person, and she appreciated this, realised he was a good person and got feelings for him? because james’ only negative traits were that he was conceited and a show off. people are able to mature and grow from these things! james did this! he did not ‘force’ lily to go out with him!

2. james and the other marauders bullied snape

you know what, i cant even disagree with this one. you’re right - they did bully him. but lets look a little bit at the context. 

sirius and james were both upper class, naive white rich boys. they are idiots. they were both stupid smart teenagers!! they were popular! and while this does not excuse the gross bullying snape was subject to-

5. snape had to be a death eater to survive at hogwarts as he roomed with blood supremacists

this is the shittiest excuse i have ever seen in my entire life. as a poc, this comment really reminds me of the argument ‘i was raised in a racist white household! i cant control my beliefs!’

you can always control your beliefs. i understand not going on big rants about blood inequality in front of a bunch of supremacists, and i understand wanting to blend and fit in (especially because he was unpopular and needed the support the slytherin boys provided), but i will never understand then becoming an active member of the group yourself. he got the dark mark. he helped voldemort. he was a death eater, and a proud one at that! no-one forced him to join. this argument literally makes my blood boil. 

6. snape had a lot of trauma from being raised in an abusive household

okay? so did sirius. so did neville. luna was bullied at school, just like snape. harry lived in an abusive household. did any of those people bully children? did any of those people join a blood supremacist group? and dont get me wrong, im not calling any of these people perfect - they all had a lot of flaws - but none of them hurt another people to the extreme that snape did. 

7. snape saved the trio’s lives many times

this is the absolute bare minimum. ‘oh wow, he didnt let harry die!! what a king! he should be respected and praised! we should excuse all of his other actions because he didnt let people die <3′ 

8. snape is not a perfect person, he also did good that many people overlook

you’re right, snape did do some good things in his life. but unfortunately, for me and many others, doing a couple of good things doesnt excuse all of the shitty, abusive things he did too. we’re not ignoring them - we just dont think they’re good enough reasons to forgive him. 

‘but james and sirius hurt others! you ignore all the bad things they did in favour of the good!’ you do the same thing with snape, first of all. second, they did a lot of good stuff. james’ and sirius’ only crimes were being annoying. for being a bit of a dick, conceited, knew they were hot and were a bit entitled. while these things are annoying as fuck, they were also stupid teens that eventually grew out of their behaviour and became better people. not perfect! better. while snape just stayed bitter at the marauders, long after their deaths, and even took his anger out on an innocent child. 

9. people only hate snape because he was poc and queer coded

as a poc and queer person, please stop. this is a very bad excuse. being poc and queer (which im pretty sure he isnt, but anyway) doesnt excuse you from your actions. plus, a huge amount of harry potter readers are poc and lgbtq. why would they hate snape for those reasons?!

I’m sorry, I love the show, but the heavily white-straight-male point of view story telling is killing me. It’s just too much now. Completely botched character development for Criston, Alicent and Daemon (I broke it down in the Reddit post below). Of course cishet dudes won’t find it bizarre that a grown ass knight just miraculously fell madly in “love” with the younger princess, and felt entitled enough to ask her to leave her inheritance to the 6 kingdoms and everything else behind just to be owned by him, and when refused felt justified enough to completely betray her and brutally murder a gay man because his feel feels are hurt. Of course they will also feel that Alicent’s character arch so far makes perfect sense, because of course when your first love and best friend withheld details of her sex life to you to protect herself, that only means “she will kill your children when she’s Queen”, and of course the only normal reaction of a young woman struggling with the great burden of womanhood in this situation is to turn into a power player for her son to be king, fight to the death of her best friend if she must. And of course, why wouldn’t the charming Rogue Prince just kill a woman for fun? I mean they don’t even know each other, and she’s from one of the most powerful noble houses that could threaten the crown’s peace, and she literally is a HUMAN BEING that had done nothing to wrong him ever, and in the original stories Daemon wasn’t even in the Vale when she died. But nahhh forget all that, us men just get to kill some bitches cos she annoying and I want a new wife. The mensies have already starting to call her “the bronze bitch” unironically lmfaooo oh so funny.

And of course, the one non-white woman, the only major Black woman character who only idk trained and rides the oldest largest dragon’s scenes got cut the most. Laena Velaryon doesn’t even have like 30 mins of screen time put together throughout this show. The actors got all the hate from the racists, but the show and white dude show runners get all the credit for “dIvEsItY cAsTiNg”, and if we dare say anything about it all the racists and sexists will scream “WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT!????” And last not least of course, the one freaking legitimate non-male heir to the throne has to be twisted and turned and demonized into a hysterical “not skinny” mess and eaten alive by a dragon, just to prove once again that no woman can ever hold the highest power in even a fictional world, No no no don’t you know women are all crazy or will all go crazy 100% of the time?

Sorry for the rant. Im so sick and tired of it. Yes I do enjoy the show and love the dragons and all that, and yes I realize stories like this in 2022 are significantly better from the ones we get before, and yes I get progress take time and blah blah blah. i think what's made us have diverging opinions on this matter is the fact that i didn't know paper girls is an adaptation of a comic book. i don't even watch the show. i sent the original ask because i looked at images of tiffany on google and have watched stranger things (erica is one of my favorite characters, the other one being argyle) and agreed with the op instead of your reply.

im also of the opinion that people will always look like other people, there's no getting around that. we have a limited gene pool and there's only so many variations you can make by mixing and matching that incredibly unique faces are really really rare (i'd say steve buscemi has the only unique face in hollywood - at least off the top of my head).

im not upset at people in my hometown mistaking me for my mother since we look really similar (we sound similar too, everyone double checks if it's her or me picking up a phone). im also not upset at people constantly mistaking me for a different girl when i moved to my uni town because we looked very similar. never met the girl before then, we're 100% not related in any way.

so when i see people look like other people, that's all that it is to me. an example of how despite 8 billion people on this planet (im ahead by a few days with this number lol) we're still all the same. but i do appreciate the explanation that it's not the case for everyone and sometimes it goes far deeper than what i perceive it as. so thank you!

so story time. like ok even though I grew up with a very racially diverse family ppl used to insist I had a doppelganger and it used to mess with my head because the girl (although I'm p sure she was half mexican versus my full mexican from both sides) they thought looked like me was just fat and had frizzy hair like me. which like ok?? my lips are bigger my nose is bigger we had different interests. and more importantly I got the feeling when we were in college that people used to tell her the same thing. Like I have a lot of privilege in terms of colorism and I hated being compared to another person constantly throughout middleschool high school and my first few years of college. but the thing is this experience is not unique to me and I can prove it. my mom who's seventy now constantly compares all black men to my 2 black uncles that married into the family despite significant differences in height, weight, features, and hair. I've tried telling both my mom and dad (he does some similar stuff) about anti blackness they obviously have. and like I know they passed it on to me and my sister. but like its frustrating because they're so old now its just an uphill battle.

so like while I don't constantly have to deal with people mistaking me for other ppl as much now I do remember how shitty it feels to constantly be compared to others just because ppl can't be bothered to get to know me for who I am.

one more story before I let this go. when I was in college I actually had a work friend that I started bringing around to my friends gatherings. mind you my friends and I all went to high school and middle school together. I had history with them. but this work friend was also an alicia. instead of calling me alicia #1 (because I was previously the only Alicia they knew) or her blonde alicia they started calling me Mexican Alicia. Mind you this went on for years and it got to the point that I had to cut ties with the majority of them because I was really feeling tokenized and belittled. before I cut ties with them I tried to get them to call me Ali instead but still some of them insisted on calling me Mexican Alicia.

this is very painful for me to talk about but like there's a reason that "faceblindness" and racism go hand in hand. if you live in a white majority country you're trained to think of whites as the norm and everyone else is othered.

tldr: In all these situations it's shitty to assume that constant comparisons with other people is really so innocent. despite my lightskinned privilege I've learned and witnessed that dark skinned Black people have it even worse than I do. and like that just breaks my heart.

First off please read this the whole way through. The things to be established are

1. Leah IS Annabeth whether or not you like it.

2. Rick was right to defend are and was quite raw as hell while he was doing it.

3. I hope all the racists who bullied her either have terrible lives or like rick said 'manage to evolve and recognize their prejudice.' Like she's twelve - go yell at birds if you're that miserable and hateful.

4. That being said there are aspects to this casting having to do with race that yes - can be discussed in a civilized manner that respects the actors, fans, and author.

It matters to say that I am an intelligent, lovely, and confident black woman. I am literally the demographic that this casting is supposed to represent. TRUST MEH when I say I have dealt with the feelings of ugliness, adultification, and erasure shown towards women who are my color in TV, books, movies, and just LIFE. But even I had mixed feelings from this casting that after 2 months of reflection - I would like to speak on if you'll allow me the chance.

For one, Leah though beautiful and smart (I loved her in Empire) IS NOT 'EXACTLY' how Rick imagined her as he emphasized. If you are telling me Rick wrote a girl who aside from being white is a Virginian,, with a college professor for a father, who came to inherit her family mansion in MCGA - if you are telling me he always imagined a black girl in this role when minority-schools in Baltimore have literal brown water and crappy moldy ceilings then he is either lying or he doesn't understand this demographic.

It would have been better to say that this is the way he 'reimagined' Annabeth bc race literally changes everything. It is not some interchangeable flippantly thing you can apply as wanted. Being black changes the way you move through the world - and no I don't mean the over-the-top ebonics and slang directors and writers force black actors to use. I mean I am always conscious of my blackness - in beauty stores, in restaurants, in class, when I am at a non-black friend's house and I have to use the bathroom [im serious] THIS IS AMERICA AND IT AFFECTS ME EVERYWHERE. In effect, this creates a 'new' Annabeth - one we know the essentials of but have not met, or actually read about. I hope the show does take this opportunity to add tidbits of black culture from hair to race dynamics within youth, the whole shabang. I also hope that her being black isn't made her whole personality as many other shows do.

Fandom, we just have to accept that this is the new Annabeth, at least the one that will be on TV, and that we might just love her as much as book annabeth. And for those of you too happy and elated for Leah to even allow thoughtful discussion to the point you are gaslighting even those that support this decision: your behavior is toxic and destructive - the only people you should be attacking are the ones literally hating on this poor girl for existing and are spiteful towards her success. Sorry that I didn't reply I was asleep lol, it's about my bestfriend me and her have been bestfriends for 12 months about to be a year in February but these past 3 months she's been acting so different, she says she dosent give a fuck about anyone anymore which my makes me wonder does she even give a fuck about me? Or even our relationship, I spent literally 2 hours crying from stress. She's told me she won't comfort me because she dosent get any comfort even though ive been giving her paragraphs of me comforting her for many months. Plus everytime I make fun of her (jokingly also the jokes arent offensive) she tells me kill myself she calls me whore, slut and way more. And i really dont want to admit it to myself that this is a toxic relationship.
