hi!! for RE
💕: What is an unpopular ship that you like?
💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?
TY for the ask Endy :>
💕 unpopular ship that I like... hmm, I quite like Leon x Krauser 🥲 I like the dynamic of Krauser training rookie Leon up to be a proper government agent, and the whole "mentor vs mentee" thing later in re4 but the mentee wins. Especially with the way Leon ends up keeping Krauser's knife.
💚 the thing everyone else gets wrong about my favourite character has to be, well, Ethan's priorities, and what he values in life. He goes through all that shit in re8 thinking Mia is dead, so of course he's then going to focus on saving his newborn from Mother Miranda. He's a selfless and extremely determined person, and it's shown all throughout. PARTICULARLY towards the end, when he has his heart ripped out by Miranda but comes back (we love our mouldy boy), even when that little girl (I think it's Evelyn?) tells him that he's been dead since the Baker house incident a few years ago, it's just the megamycete keeping him alive. And obviously he sacrifices himself just to save Rose, hands her over to Chris. The fact that he remains completely faceless throughout the whole thing too... also he continues to be a good father even in death. When Rose is a teenager in the DLC (meaning he's been dead for like 16 years atp), as a ghost he still helps her out as much as he can during the DLC incident. Ethan wasn't liked when re7 came out, iirc, because he was "the new guy" or wtv. I think people thought he was pathetic? Maybe? Idrk, but he's the complete opposite of that. We all stand to learn something from him
(I'm sorry I wrote so much for it hhhh the brainrot is real and also my autistic special interest ;; )

👻 monster symbolism anon here. That course sounds so cool!
That makes sense that they’re more homages. Like I didn’t entirely think the zombies represented anything but also sometimes coding or symbolism happens anyways. Sooo I figured that whether intentional or not, the zombies still end up representing the same fears they usually do.
But the bosses not having symbolism do make sense. I didn’t think there were any but horror is so steeped in it I thought I just must be missing it.
But the homage thing makes so much more sense considering Evelyn’s final form at the end of re7 is literally the final form of the demon in evil dead 2. It wasn’t even a subtle homage. I love that game because it’s basically an evil dead game. How did I forget that fact 😭
But as for eight I should replay that and look into the symbolism. My brain stops at classic horror archetypes.
We got Frankenstein, we got basically a ghost lady and a creepy doll, werewolves, the creature from the black lagoon, and a witch. Personally I like big lady Dracula and the three daughters, because technically speaking the three vampire ladies/the weird sisters, are never listed as his brides in the Dracula story. They’re just kinda there. And some people do actually think they’re his daughters or sisters. And then she gets to turn into a dragon because she lives in a castle and also Dracula kinda means son of the devil but also it can mean son of the dragon so really it all comes together. And then that’s where my brain stops.
Should have found a way to work a mummy and the phantom of the opera in there Capcom.
so i actually want to tag @friedesgreatscythe in this just because she knows a ton of japanese horror folklore, and the monsters in RE8 aren't just classic monsters.
the whole thing with the beneviento house probably was inspired by the history of japanese ghost marriages -- especially considering, you know. the doll is a bride.
Tumblr media
i don't know a whole lot about it, but i do know that it is a thing LMAO to the best of my knowledge (and i could be wrong), this became a thing around the WW2 era when a lot of promised men went off to war and died. the marriage was still expected to happen to honor the promise to the family, but a doll would stand in for the bride in order to marry the deceased.
again, i'm not a super expert on this, and i really don't know RE8 well enough to go through a whole rundown of it in context, but. there's stuff at play in RE8 that goes way beyond classic monsters.

at one point re7 had 20 hours but idk where they went
itll definitely have 20+ hours this coming Wednesday cause my mom works nightshift and 11-11 the next few days so, ye.
im still in dimitrescu’s castle in re8 and im playing the tape where your looking for evelyn in re7
speaking of re7, i was playing it in vr and my visor went inverted and made me nauseous, i fixed it by closing my eyes and shaking my head aggressively
if it happens again ill screen record it, but it sucks, it hasnt done it since that night but ive only played about 30 minutes after that in vr.

the song Abigail very RE7/RE8
think it technically makes more sense for RE7 (evelyn being “reborn” with mia, plus shes kinda canonically a little fucker) but could be RE8 (mother miranda placeholding for mia who iirc is Fucking Dead)

sometimes when i have classic-horror themed nightmares—you know, like, spooky area filled with ghosts or monsters—my brain will put it in the context of "i'm playing a video game" or "i'm experiencing an irl horror game", and i just WISH there was a video game that could actually scare me like that.
i don't know what happens to your brain unconsciously or chemically to make any sort of horror dream instill a genuine terror response, but video games definitely don't make me feel that way.
i can only think of one time i had a fear response in a game: in re7, when you're in evelyn's room and you have to go into the crawl space to get the mummified limb, or whatever it is. but that's really fleeting, since you immediately start getting attacked and have to start blasting. if a horror game involves shooting and combat with repetitive enemies, a lot of the fear is removed for me.
for however much my nightmares suck because they're, you know, nightmares, and they disrupt precious sleep, i do wish i could play a video game that evokes that same sort of feeling on my own time.
my nightmares do...intrigue me, in a way. some of the repetitive themes that pop up might be interesting to confront in media form. like exposure therapy. a lot of the settings in my nightmares would slot so perfectly into video game format too—a lot of "there's a secret part of this house where people have died that's been attached to the house you're living in that nobody ever knew about" and "descent/ascent into a haunted building, that gets more terrifying and inescapable the deeper you progress".

I have so many headcanons I want to yell about for resident evil. I have had too much caffeine but this is fine. I will share what I have :> also please yell at me if you have thoughts on these, I’d love to discuss it even if it doesn’t fit your own hcs.
Since the megamycete (and presumably Evelyn??) have/had the power to be a database for a bunch of individuals that have been introduced to the fungus, that could mean that after the last fight of re8 (and the fact that Ethan appears to be alive) that Rosemary is effectively acting as that “database” now.
That could mean she has the original copies of the minds of everyone who was inflicted with the fungus before their transformations- both in America around the time of re7 and during however long things were happening in Romania.
I like to think this means that everyone has a little bubble of existence where they’re just hanging out in a dream-like place (Kind of like that one weird dream scene thing in re7 where Jack and most of the Baker family spoke to Ethan about what Evelyn’s deal was) and Rosemary may even have some control over what they remember since she’s the “best” version of Evelyn.
Another thing is that they could act as little guides for Rose as she grows up. She could access their memories and experiences to better figure out how to solve problems or get out of trouble. Maybe they could be like weird ghosts that only she can see (this is actually something I’m thinking about for a verse with the OC I’m making 👀 👀)

Game Journal 04/26/20: Honestly, Evelyn?  I Think It’s Easy To See Why Everyone Hates You.
Tumblr media
“Why does everybody hate me?” is the powerhouse line delivered by Evelyn, the child....bioweapon...ghost...thing who serves as the ultimate threat and final boss of Resident Evil 7.  The answer to that question is really quite easy though, because Evelyn has been hounding, attacking and frankly spooking the hell out of Ethan “The Ultimate Normie” Winters the whole game, why would she assume you’re going to do anything other than hate her?  Doesn’t help much that she melts down screaming like the Wicked Witch Of The West and ends up a horrifying shrieking mass of black mold emerging from a giant face in the wall. It’s that giant face that brings us to the final battle of RE7, and it’s one hell of a great one.  Up to this point (well okay there is the giant Jack Baker monster) RE7 has kept it’s battles with both enemies and bosses relatively small scale. Giant bio-monsters is a staple of the Resident Evil series and there’s really only the one of them before this (the aforementioned Jack Baker monster).  I absolutely adore this final battle though.  There’s really nothing to it from a gameplay perspective, you sort of just fire wildly into the giant face in the wall until the next, much more heavily scripted, sequence of the fight starts.
Tumblr media
Remember that gritty Jack and the Beanstalk reboot they made a few years ago? That, but Resident Evil. Once you’ve pumped enough bullets into the giant head (seriously, bring the machine gun) Evelyn decides that her one true play is to become an evil Beanstalk.  This part of the battle is even more straightforward than the one before it, you’re either laying on the ground or dangling by your foot and your literal only action is to wildly fire whatever gun you last had equipped into the giant monster in front of you.  So much of Resident Evil 7 is so grounded and slow paced, that even though you could argue the big final battle with Evelyn is almost crazily out of place, it’s one hell of a way to end the game!
Random Screenshot Of The Day:
Tumblr media
The mines leading up to the final battle are very short, but a lot of fun!  There’s a good sense of power fantasy in this final section of a game where you’ve been mostly helpless for the entire run time!
Stray Game Notes:
- I’d say “I forgot how much I love Fallout 4 ″but that would be a lie, I’ve not forgotten how much I love Fallout 4.  I’m just happy I’m playing it again really.
- Gears Tactics comes out in just a couple days, I’ve got it pre-downloading!  Get hype for uh....turn based tactics? - Seriously though, get hype for that sweet sweet Gears of War lore, i’m not even being sarcastic, I love that series so dang much.

Good morning i woke up 30 minutes later than i wanted to and then randomly remembered how much i hated resident evil 7:biohazard. Fuck that game in particular, it was a disjointed mess of clichés and then had the balls to try to make me sympathize with a monster person who thought that using a human child as a government experiment/weapon was remotely okay and then condemned said child because she wanted a family but didnt know how to human because you let the government turn her into a bioweapon. FUCK Mia , I’ll fucking attack her like a fucking feral cat and drown her in the bayou like she should have drowned before the game even started, and fuck her chump husband ethan who didnt see anything wrong with her actions, and fuck the writing team for using child experimentation for shock value and not realizing that i wouldnt sympathize with the captor of said child experiments. Fuck that resident evil game in particular, why does google say that 95% of people like this game, what the fuck do you all see in it.

After years of searching Rose and Mia's location, I think Ethan would rather hide himself and watch over Rose and Mia from the distance so he wouldn't ruin their peace, til' one fateful day,,,
Tumblr media
Ethan caught Rose's attention, and luckily, no one was around. To make it extra, Rose was always aware of Ethan watching her and Mia all this time though not aware of Ethan being her dad yet knew he's no threat. The silly idea of Rose calling Ethan Fairy-Godmother kinda felt right in a way, referencing Aurora calling Maleficent her Fairy-Godmother from Maleficent 2014,,,
Tumblr media
And so, Ethan embraces the title of Fairy-Godmother and Rose would secretly visit Ethan to learn about the mold and have daughter-and-father bonding (Rose being Ethan's Beasty, replaced by Jellybean, and Ethan being Rose's Fairy-Godmother). Ethan trains Rose on her mold abilities and show non-threatening simple things she could do, like growing a rose for example. In a whim, Rose created a mold rose crown for Ethan,,,
Ethan with tentacles on his head is his boss form, here's the link to the sketch(s):
Rose would later on doodle her adventures of her and Ethan, catching Mia's attention. At first, Mia feels uncomfortable about Rose's Fairy-Godmother doodles knowing from the event of RE8 (Mother Miranda & co.) but soon isn't bothered by it knowing Rose is still a kid and might as well have wild imaginations and created an imaginary friend. Dunno about Chris, perhaps he also saw Rose's doodles and felt a disturbance in the force, causing him to question the mold child and increasing reinforcements but I think he'd think that Rose's Fairy-Godmother isn't just an imaginary friend, it's Rose communicating with whoever's mind was stuck in the mold's hivemind. To prevent Rose from turning into a horror movie little girl, Chris makes sure Rose isn't effected by the hivemind's influence by mentoring her and be dad number 2.
How Ethan avoided Chris' men is by using each abilities of the 4 Lords, specifically Donna Beneviento and Heisenburger; Ethan uses Donna's hallucination spores to hide himself when roaming near Chris' men and jack their weapons and camera by using Heisenburger's magneto abilities. As Rose grows up, she eventually learns about her Fairy-Godmother - Ethan - being her dad but she as well would visit Ethan less due to her tests.
The part where Rose choked the driver dude and said she'd show whatever Chris doesn't know, she's referring to her old training with Ethan (it wasn't much dangerous but I think the true danger is Rose's creativity on how she uses her mold abilities, ain't explaining, just imagine her reconstructing weapons to her own liking),,,
Some plotful events later,,,
Tumblr media
Either Ethan was found by the Connection, a new infection relative or the BSAA themselves, this resulted Ethan to go on a wild goose chase,,,
Rose would find a weaken Ethan and bring him to her safe haven, her and Mia's home, resulting the awaited renunion between Mia and Ethan,,,
Mia's reaction of Ethan being alive indeed emotionally horrified her, but for Ethan's monstrous form, I think she feels very guilty knowing by her experience of being infected by Evelyne from the event of RE7 - feeling and thinking that Ethan must've felt so much pain enduring the infection. Both Mia and Ethan would sob in their renunion and I guess also embrace Rose in a hug knowing the three are together again,,,
Damn,,, I dumped alot of shoob here, never knew one question would result me dumping a sort of headcanon continuation of the Father's story. I honestly wanted to draw more of Ethan and Rose's adventures but the cuteness would give me diabetes and kill me. I guess that's it for now.

How RE8 did its Female Characters Dirty - Introduction & Part One: Mia Winters
The Resident Evil fandom has always been known for its kickass female characters - Jill, Claire, Ada, Sherry, Mia etc. - which is part of the reason I had such high hopes and expectations for Resident Evil Village. From the get-go it looked like we were going to get both quality and quantity in this department.
Which is why I was so disappointed when I experienced the game.
When I’m talking about a good/great female character, I’m not really talking about moral alignment. You can have a character who frickin’ nails it as a villain and is a great character to experience.
Like a lot of people I was swept up in the Lady D hype and believe me my love of her has not changed or diminished, but after the initial excitement had died down I kind of realised with growing disappointment that RE8 did its girls dirty.
I’m gonna break down pretty much every female character of the game and share my opinion of how I thought they were screwed over, didn’t reach their potential and/or in some cases communicated some pretty shitty messages.
Mia Winters
We first get to know Mia in RE7 and I personally thought she was really cool (way cooler than Ethan). I found her to be pragmatic, caring, resilient, brave and multifaceted. And we know there was more to her than a loving wife.
RE8 would have been a great chance to explore her character more deeply, maybe how she got involved with Evelyn, what her thoughts and goals were. I think it would have been way more meaningful to have Mia pursuing Rose.
The first impression we get of her in RE8 is snappy, unpleasant, moody, defensive. Just, generally, really not nice.
And obviously we later learn that this is Miranda in disguise, but the fact that her behaviour gets portrayed as not unusual is shady af and a real diversion from the Mia from RE7. There’s nothing from Ethan noting how her behaviour has changed or how she’s acting strange or different.
Also he never lets her get a goddamn word in. I swear his most repeated line in the game is ‘What are you talking about?’ yet he completely talks over Mia when she’s trying to explain then acts confused about everything.
Like let the woman finish her damn sentence!
Then we find later that she’s been held in a spooky dungeon all along and she’s just been helpless this whole time? You’re telling me that in all that time she wouldn’t have found some way out? Or some way to do anything?
Mia doesn’t get any kind of active role in RE8. She’s entirely reduced to this essentially useless/helpless wife and mother who won’t shut up about how ‘special’ Ethan is blah blah snore. She’s denied her independence and capabilities we started to explore in RE7.
Discussion and sharing thoughts are welcome! Part 2 will be covering Elena and Luiza
