AHHHHH- IM SO SICK OF THE BS I SWEAR-
FIRST OF ALL-
He doesn't "act naturally" or "normal" because HE'S AUTISTIC-
Will Roland portrays him as AUTISTIC so he's gonna act AUTISTIC-
ALSOOOO- IT'S BROADWAY, BABE- THEY NEED TO BE OVERDRAMATIC AND VERY EXPRESSIVE OTHERWISE THE PREFORMANCE DOESN'T CARRY THROUGH THE WHOLE THEATRE-
AND ANOTHER THING- Jeremy is supposed to be a "loser"-
he gets bullied and is misunderstood by his peers because he is, well, NOT CHILL-
HE'S "CHALANT" AS HELL-
He gets bullied because he cares about things too much, he's anxious, he's loud-
And in regards to the "can't hold a note for too long"- have you heard Loser, Geek, Whatever? Or More Than Survive? Or Two Player Game??? Song where he holds notes for quite a long time- ALSO- to say that Will Roland can't reach the same notes as Will Connolly is just... not true.
And one of the reasons I think some people think Will Roland is "a worse singer" is because, sometimes, stylistically, Will Roland will use a sort of falsetto/head voice (which I LOVE BTW AND IM SICK OF PEOPLE CALLING OTHER PEOPLE BAD SINGERS BECAUSE THEY USE HEAD VOICE- IT'S BEAUTIFUL, IMPRESSIVE, AND REQUIRES GOOD BREATH CONTROL TO MAKE IT NOT SOUND CRAPPY AND WILL ROLAND DOES IT AMAZINGLY) like when he says "hero" and "Rob Dinero" (idk if that's how you spell it 😭) in More Than Survive.
It's not that he's a bad singer, he is taking the brunt of his voice during those parts and also, given that it's this little solo/soliloquy moment for Jeremy, I think that Will Roland's choice to use a light head voice there is perfectly well-placed. It feels kinda personal, I guess. And I love it <3
Not to say that Will Connolly's way of singing it isn't also great. It's awesome! But like, guys, we can't keep getting pissed when a new actor in a show doesn't have the exact same singing voice as the original 😭 That's just silly, guys. 😭
(LIKE WHEN PEOPLE GOT PISSED AT ELIZABETH TEETER'S LYDIA FOR SOUNDING TOO MUSICAL THEATRE-Y?? LIKE. HUH?!? GUYS, IT'S BROADWAY- WHAT DO YOU MEANNN??? Sorry, I have feelings- Also, Shoutout to Elizabeth Teeter, btw, cuz' she slayed <3)
Anywaysss- back to Will Roland's voice- he is very much capable of hitting the notes that Will Conolly hits- if not higher (IT'S NOT A COMPETION THO, GUYS- PLS DONT COME FOR ME). For example, the acoustic version of Loser, Geek, Whatever on Spotify which, I believe, is a key higher than usual!! This man can belt some high notes when the situation calls for it! And also, (these are not really bmc related but whatever) during the harmony or whatever at the end of "Sincerely, Me", that is none other than WiLL RoLaND (!!!) hitting that high E (I'm pretty sure it's an E. I hope it's an E. But regardless, it's still a SUPER HIGH NOTE) at the end! And in "Amphibian" on Joe Iconis' album titled, well, "Album", Will Roland hits some insanely high notes!!! ( EVEN IF THEY ARE HEAD VOICE. I REPEAT, HEAD VOICE DOES NOT MEAN BAD SINGER!!)
Also, as a little additional statement to my "Jeremy is autistic/ autistic-coded so Will Roland played him as autistic"; this is not to say that Will Conolly didn't add some "autistic flare", if you will, to Jeremy. I mean, just yesterday I was freaking out with my friend about a gif of Will Conolly's Jeremy doing the autistic flappy hands :))). And I think that he was a good baseline for other Jeremy's to build off of!
Also, I feel like the people that are saying that Will Roland's portrayal of autism/neurodiversity is "ableist" or "incorrect" or "too dramatic" are sorta failing to understand/acknowledge that autism/neurodiversity is a spectrum. Not every person with autism or another kind of Neurodiversity is gonna act the same. And I think that's something really beautiful that we should all cherish. It is GREAT that we are all different but also, in many ways, the same!
And to see myself and my uncontrolled speaking voice and weird noises and such represented by Will Roland on stage is such a beautiful thing that I think 'ought to be cherished.

Louis: I think I can get a good grade in husband and father.
Lyla: *happy to have two whole decent non-abusive family members*
Evan: *happy to have any family at all*
Louis: Yes. Being the perfect husband and father is a perfectly reasonable thing to want and obtain.

Sat down to watch the Be More Chill musical on my computer through legal means and got sucker-punched by the fact that the show was basically butchered when it was revived for the 2018 Off-Broadway production, I can only assume as a direct result of the casting of Will Roland in the lead role as Jeremy.
Roland apparently auditioned for Jeremy in Be More Chill in 2015, and was snubbed in favour of Will Connolly, who you hear on the first Original Cast Recording. In the meantime, he went on to perform in Dear Evan Hansen, which turned out to be phenomenally successful, and he won a couple of awards, which I assume is why when he came back to Be More Chill in 2018, the new song "Loser Geek Whatever" was added, becoming the new end-of-Act-1 number. This song, which is basically just an extended solo for Roland where Jeremy sings about resenting his social status and wanting to be cool (an emotional state which has been painfully well-established by this point), is like nails-on-a-chalkboard to me. It's like a caricature of what you'd imagine Be More Chill to be like if you haven't seen it.
If it was just one song, I guess I could grit my teeth and just skip it, but sadly Roland's performance and vocals are about as consistently offputting. It's difficult coming into a role which has already been originated by another actor, and putting your own spin on it, but I just think he fucked it. I can only describe his delivery as aggressive, angry and entitled instead of self-effacing and sardonic. He's so incredibly punchable. It's unbearable. I think it completely changes the tenor of the story. I'm not the only one; a quick google search yields tons of results for people making a similar point.
Anyway, I realised I'd never actually seen footage of the original 2015 Two River Theater production, just audio, so I went to look for it. Will Connolly's performance, by contrast, is far more naturalistic and precise; a lot of his mannerisms are subtle and awkward, his expressions are guileless, his delivery is earnest. Jeremy is still a little shitstain, but more in an "argh, what are you DOING!" way than a "fuck you fuck you fuck you" way. The only known video of the Two River production to exist covers just the first half-hour; maybe a third of the show. There's complete audio for the rest. Plus, of course, the studio recordings of the songs. And when it comes to musical theatre, it's like, yeah, same as it ever was—but for me this is my own personal Star Wars Special Editions controversy, where the only extant version of the story is one where it's like a madman has combed back over it to fuck up as many things as possible.
An animator called Claudia Cacace on YouTube produced several animatics for the show, splicing the studio recordings into the Two River audio, with lofty ambitions of eventually adapting the whole thing. I think a lot of her directorial choices are brilliant, but again, she only really touched Act 1—and last year she released an unfinished animatic, announcing that she was done with the project because people were being insane about it online. Again, same as it ever was. I can see some other YouTube users have valiantly attempted to compile playlists of animatics from various animators to cover the whole show, but what's the point, if the overall look and quality of the thing is wildly varying every five minutes?
Maybe I should go read the original novel. I hear it's good.

John Lennon talking about "the Beatles break up" in 1970
Breakdown:
Jann asks about the Beatles break up and John says he told Paul he is leaving (like they are the only two people in the band?)
Paul was still making a lot of plans for the band but John was already being stubborn about everything.
Paul probably thought he could/would do damage control while John has not made the announcement yet.
John saying he wasn't angry and then saying "not angry in that way" (what way then, John?) and then slipping to "we" were angry.
Paul calling John on the phone the same day (after crying his heart out for an hour) declaring : he can do the same "John and Yoko" thing
John answering like he was going to be ok with it.
Tumblr media
Jann Wenner: You said you quit The Beatles first.
John: Yeah.
Jann Wenner: How?
John:
Well, I said to Paul, I'm leaving.
We're in Apple and I just on the way over to. I knew before I went to Toronto, I told Alan I was leaving. I told Eric Clapton and Klaus that I was leaving and I'd like to probably use them as a group, you know, and it hadn't decided how to do it, to have a permanent new group or or what. And then later on I thought, fuck, I'm not going to get stuck with another set of people in it, whoever they are. So, but I I announced it to myself and to the people around me on the way to Toronto the few days before. And on the plane, Alan came with me. I told Alan, you know, it's over. And then when I got back there was a few meetings and Alan had said, well, cool it cool it because there was a lot to do, you know, business wise it wouldn't have been suitable at the time, you know.
And then we were discussing something in the office with Paul, and Paul said something other, like like to do something or. And I kept saying no, no, no to everything, he said, you see. So it came to a point. I had to say something, of course. And well, what do you mean then? So I said, I mean the group's over, I'm leaving.
And but Alan was there. He'll remember exactly, and she will. This is my how I see it. Alan was saying don't tell.
He didn't want me to tell Paul even you know (pause). And but I couldn't help. So I thought I was out. I couldn't stop.
Tumblr media
It came out and Paul and Alan said they were glad that I wasn't going to announce it, that I was going to make an event out of it. Right, but Paul and Alan both. I don't know whether Paul said don't tell anybody, but he was damn pleased that I wasn't, you know, he said, Oh well, that means nothing really happened if you're not going to say anything.
So that's what happened. Well, I mean, like, like anybody when you say divorce, you know, their face goes all sorts of colours. It's like he knew what really that this was the final thing, you know?
And then six months later, he comes out with whatever, you know, I told Ray Connolly. So there's a lot of people knew I'd left, but I was a fool not to do it, you know? Not to do what Paul did, which is use it to sell a record.
Jann Wenner: You were really angry at Paul.
John: No, I wasn't angry. But when he came out with his, I'm leaving. Well, I wasn't angry. I was just shit, you know, I mean, he's a good PR man, Paul. I mean, he's about the best in the world, probably. He really does a job.
I was just. I wasn't angry in that way. I was. We were all hurt that he didn't tell us.
That what he was going to do. But he, I think he claims that he didn't mean that to happen, but that's bullshit. He called me in the afternoon of that day and said I'm doing what you and Yoko were doing last year. And I said good, you know.
Tumblr media
Mal Evans during an interview in 1975
MAL (Source): And then… John left. And I remember that well. That was really, truly a heartbreaking experience. We were in Apple, at 3 Savile Row, and John said – “It’s over.” You know? And I drove Paul home. And we got to Paul’s house, and
he spent the next hour in the house crying his eyes out.
Tumblr media
And I just wandered around the garden like a lost soul, just crying. It was the end of the world. It was like the end of The Wizard of Oz – when she gets back to the black-and-white reality. All the colour had gone out of life.

About 165 words written today -- not really in the mood to work on anything actually in progress, which meant that I just kind of shuffled through all of my WIPs. Submitted my PhD dissertation today! did not actually like. celebrate. Watch all of Snowpiercer S1. (The show with Daveed Diggs and Jennifer Connolly, not the film with Chris Evans.) Feeling very dislocated in general. Do need to grade this weekend, sigh, would love to like...not do that...but I put it off all week in order to get the dissertation done.

WIP INTRODUCTION POST:
when stars collide (black holes form)
(formerly known as character meets death (goes wholesome?) )
WSC is a Harry Potter, Marauders era isekai fanfiction, starring an OC from our world, who dies and is reincarnated into the body of four year old Callidora Black, twin sister to Bellatrix Black. On the way, she briefly meets death, hence the original title.
It's important to note for continuity, that I've messed around a little with both the sibling order and the birth years for this fic - since I needed Calli to stay a little longer at Hogwarts, Andromeda is the oldest Black, Bella and Calli being two years younger than that, Narcissa another two years, Sirius another two years, and then Regulus one year after that.
Callidora has a list of things she needs to achieve, first being to make her new family somewhat stable, and to bring them close enough that nothing will separate them. She spends the first seven years in her new body doing just that, making sure that Sirius and Regulus are closer than anything, that Andy isn't the sole protector of her sisters, that Bellatrix feels like she's enough and doesn't need the glory of the Death Eaters.
The next seven years at Hogwarts bring many challenges and new friends - notably her best friend, Tommy Connolly (a canon character mentioned once who I stole), who is the human equivalent of a golden retriever in a flower crown, and who no one can understand why he is friends with the ice queen of Slytherin. (Look, Calli didn't *mean* to get that title, she was just so busy trying to fix everyone she meets and prevent the worst of the canon events, that she forgot to socialise outside of threatening people who hurt her family.)
In amidst smuggling schemes, illegal animagus transformations, money-making loopholes (who thought it was a good idea to make galleons solid gold?) and being dragged onto the Quidditch team by her precocious twin, Calli still manages to find the time to keep an eye on young Lily Evans, her sister Petunia and their best friend Severus Snape, her reckless cousin, as well as the future Skittles who really ought to have more adult supervision.
And Voldemort? Well, he really ought to have known better than to fuck with a Black. Especially one who's had to deal with over a decade of Lucius Malfoy. (He might not be a death eater this time round, but that little shit was marrying her sister, and torment was part of the sister in law contract)
I'll be putting up a character intro post soon, I'll link it here and in my masterlist when its done, in the meantime, if there's any questions you want to ask, my inbox and dm's are always open!

who’s ur top 10 bands/artists?
GOOD QUESTION and i might say more about them than i need to but that's probably fine. i also can't really order them from like #1 - #10 (if i even have 10 to list yet actually) because i love them all for different reasons and, because those reasons are so different, i can't place one above another in my mind(except possibly one of them but i'll get to that). so i will just number them as i think of them
1. okay so i love iron maiden very much and although i love all of the members, bruce dickinson is my favorite from them. they're probably the first band that i ever said was my favorite and meant it. i love the way they are with the fans and how genuine they always are about everything.
2. HOWEVER, even though i didn't really acknowledge it for a long time(and actually may have forgotten they existed for many years before getting into them again after iron maiden(oops)), sweet was actually my first ever favorite band since i was a kid. i used to play a cassette tape of them over and over all day every day. my favorite of them is brian connolly, i love his voice. i used to stare at my dad's (now mine) desolation boulevard vinyl cover a lot when i was little. i remember looking at steve priest's red hair the most.
3. some might think i'm out of my mind for grouping showaddywaddy into the mix, but i love the sound of doowop. and they did it so well while also being so fun to watch. i actually can't watch any of their videos without smiling or laughing, even if i'm in the worst mood, which is exactly what they were all about. my favorites of them are buddy gask and malcolm allured.
4. AND THEN WE HAVE BADFINGER. pete ham and tom evans are my favorites of them. pete is the one that i might put at the very top of my favorites list. i love him so much, he was a very good guitarist and songwriter and i don't think enough people are aware of it. i love his mind and his voice is very soothing to listen to. he was a very gentle, sensitive and caring person and he deserved the entire world and everything good in life.
5. i haven't officially said it yet until now(i think?), but argent is the most recent addition to my favorites. from when i was first sent a video of them a while back and i heard russ ballard's voice and saw the way he is on stage and the sound of the music, i KNEW right away they would eventually be one of THE BANDS and i already knew russ would be my favorite of them. what i DIDN'T expect is for him to be so.. inspirational? i don't know what other word to use. like everything he says in interviews and things makes me pause the video for a while to rethink my entire life and what i'm doing with it(in a good "maybe i can fix my life" kind of way). i actually cried my eyes out earlier over some things he said. he's a very good guitarist as well, and pianist and of course the songwriting, among other things. BEAUTIFUL singing voice that he could do many things with. he's so full of life and joy and optimism. and MUSIC. he is very full of music. my love for him is growing rapidly every day.
6. okay before i gush so much that my phone battery dies, i'm going to list one i don't really post but has been one of my favorites for a long time(again i didn't acknowledge them as a favorite until recently). i love genesis. all of genesis, but when i started listening again after not listening for a few years, i was suddenly more into their earlier music with peter gabriel, which is the opposite of how it used to be. (still love(d) both eras then and now though)
7. AND i can't leave out suzi quatro being my favorite bassist! or one of my favorites or something. i love her and i don't think she's talked about enough. i still have to learn more about her.
okay i think i'm out of favorites. unless i'm forgetting one. i don't think so.
i'm somehow too easily attached to bands but also very picky about them at the same time while also basically loving everything. i don't know how that works.

Peter Gabriel announces his first album of new material in over 20 years
i/o releases on 1 December, 2023
Tumblr media
i/o is 12 tracks of grace, gravity and great beauty that provide welcome confirmation of not only Peter’s ongoing ability to write stop-you-in-your-tracks songs but also of that thrilling voice, still perfectly, delightfully intact. Throughout the album the intelligent and thoughtful – often thought-provoking – songs tackle life and the universe. Our connection to the world around us – ‘I’m just a part of everything’ Peter sings on title track i/o – is a recurring motif, but so too the passing of time, mortality and grief, alongside such themes as injustice, surveillance and the roots of terrorism. But this is not a solemn record. While reflective, the mood is never despondent; i/o is musically adventurous, often joyous and ultimately full of hope, topped off as it is, by the rousingly optimistic closing song, Live and Let Live.
Tumblr media
Recorded mostly at Real World Studios and Peter’s home studio, the lengthy gestation of i/o means it has a sizeable cast list. Peter has kept his trusty inner circle of musicians close to hand, which means guitarist David Rhodes, bassist Tony Levin and drummer Manu Katché are sterling presences throughout. Several songs bear the fingerprints of long-time associate Brian Eno, whilst there are notable contributions from Richard Russell, pianist Tom Cawley, trumpeters Josh Shpak and Paolo Fresu, cellist Linnea Olsson and keyboard player Don E. Peter’s daughter Melanie contributes warm backing vocals, as does Ríoghnach Connolly of The Breath, while Real World regulars Richard Chappell, Oli Jacobs, Katie May and Richard Evans collectively provide programming and play various instruments. Soweto Gospel Choir and Swedish all-male choir Oprhei Drängar lend their magnificent harmonies to a selection of tracks, and the mass strings of the New Blood Orchestra, led by John Metcalfe, both soothe and soar.
Tumblr media
Renowned for being a boundary-pushing artist, i/o is not simply a collection of a dozen songs. All 12 tracks are subject to two stereo mixes: the Bright-Side Mix, handled by Mark ‘Spike’ Stent, and the Dark-Side Mix, as reshaped by Tchad Blake. “We have two of the greatest mixers in the world in Tchad and Spike and they definitely bring different characters to the songs. Tchad is very much a sculptor building a journey with sound and drama, Spike loves sound and assembling these pictures, so he’s more of a painter.” Both versions are included on the double-CD package, and are also available separately as double vinyl albums. And that’s not all. A third version – the In-Side Mix, in Dolby Atmos, comes courtesy of Hans-Martin Buff “doing a wonderful job generating these much more three-dimensional mixes” and is included in three-disc set, including Blu-ray.
Tumblr media
Continuing the idea developed for Peter’s US and UP albums, he has again invited a range of visual artists to contribute a piece of art to accompany the music and each of i/o’s 12 songs were handed to a world-renowned artist to create an accompanying work, whether paint, photography, sculpture or even Plasticine. The dozen artists make an exceedingly impressive team of collaborators: Ai Weiwei, Nick Cave, Olafur Eliasson, Henry Hudson, Annette Messager, Antony Micallef, David Moreno, Cornelia Parker, Megan Rooney, Tim Shaw, David Spriggs and Barthélémy Toguo.
Tumblr media
Another visual link with Peter’s past work is the cover shot. Taken by photographer Nadav Kander, it echoes with the covers of his earlier albums, always present but, with the exception of So, intriguingly obscured or manipulated.
Tumblr media
These echoes of the past might resonate, but i/o is fundamentally an album of – and for – the here and now. Many of its themes may be timeless, but they’re also warnings that we’re living on borrowed time, both as a planet and as individuals.
