tgcf coffee shop au

tumblr swallowed my draft so i died and then revived to finish this…

i’m actually planning the au instead of just writing it!! (the crowd goes wild /j)

for my three-part tgcf coffee shop au, featuring multichapters exploring hualian, fengqing, and quanyinxuan getting together <3

pls dont steal my idea or whatever lol 😭 i will get around to writing this eventually and ik it’s not like my thoughts are revolutionary but i’d appreciate it if nobody stole this lmfao

the cast:

hua cheng - a broke college art student in his final year. he works odd shifts at the coffee shop to save up money to pay off his debts. he could just ask his rich family for money, but he wants to make his own way. stubborn, yet occasionally charming. heterochromic, with his right eye being red.

xie lian - a college music major who’s new to the city, having gotten a job at the local music store via his connections with his two best friends, feng xin and mu qing, to study at one of the best schools in the country. looks sweet, sometimes says odd things (hua cheng finds it endearing), scary if he needs to be.

yin yu - the young owner of the coffee shop in question. he’s smart, reliable, and good at finances, if visually a bit forgettable. neither talkative nor soft-spoken. expert at keeping he xuan and hua cheng from fighting.

he xuan - part-time marine biology studier, part-time coffee shop worker, full-time hua cheng antagonizer. they’ve been best friends since preschool, and they ended up in the same city again. looks gloomy, but he can be rather playful, especially around yin yu and quan yizhen.

quan yizhen - high energy martial arts prodigy. he and yin yu have been close since they were young and practiced martial arts together. yin yu’s interest waned, but yizhen’s never did. his refusal to go to college angered his parents, and yin yu’s soft spot for his shidi encouraged him to offer him a job and a place to stay. part-time coffee shop worker, part-time tai chi instructor.

feng xin - the hot-headed assistant manager at the nearby music store. known locally for his good looks, quick temper, and vast knowledge of different musical scores. ask him a question about one of his favorites to get on his good side.

mu qing - the sharp-tongued cashier at the nearby music store. known locally for his good looks, cruel words, and incomparable knowledge of different musical instruments. ask him a question about one of his favorites to get on his good side.

the setting:

modern universe, of course <3 i have names picked out for the coffee shop and music store, but i’ll share those another time hehe

Spirit’s Eve was fun this year. Jas was so brave making it all the way through the maze together. Plus, she got a butt load of candy in her pillow sack!

Welp, time to wrap up the event. You guys will see me in a new outfit for the season soon. Just gotta dig it out of the closet somewhere.

I imagine Essek had this moment of recognition with Astrid and Eadwulf while they were all in the Blooming Grove, similar to how Kima was like “sword lesbian recognize sword lesbian” with Yasha. They all looked at each other and went “neutral evil wizard with complicated feelings for Caleb and a weird relationship to their homeland recognize neutral evil wizard with complicated feelings for Caleb and a weird relationship to their homeland,” and they didn’t need to discuss it any further. Their relationship is not affectionate at all, but it is not hostile. It can’t even really be called professional. It’s just there, and it’s a relationship of few words, but enough understanding.

And Astrid. Astrid Beck, my most beloved. Her relationship with Caleb hurts, if she’s being honest. But so does her relationship with Eadwulf, even though it’s a different kind of hurt. She is just full of trauma and I don’t think there is anything in her life that isn’t filtered through it, so everything is just kinda painful.

But I imagine that after taking on the role of Archmage, Astrid feeds Essek just enough intel to steer clear of the Assembly's ire, but they don't talk at all beyond that. So like, they don't really know anything about each other, but they are still offering up a lot of trust. It creates this weird intimacy of knowing someone's greatest secrets (Astrid, about Essek) and having seen them at their lowest point (Essek, about Astrid) and sharing a weakness (both of them, for Caleb). But at the same time, there is a massive divide between them that, for a myriad of reasons, will never ever be bridged. They both know this, so they won't even try.

They do not have a relationship, but there is still so much to it, you feel me?

2 am and my npmd rotted brain is even more incoherent than usual but like... max explicitly saying that he views grace as "forbidden fruit", and while not said out loud, that is clearly also how grace views max... in christian doctrine, adam and eve ate the forbidden fruit and became sinful and unintentionally doomed the rest of humanity with original sin... grace having sex with max, tasting her forbidden fruit and becoming sinful and taking it upon herself to doom the rest of sinful humanity (well, dirty dudes, but she clearly doesn't have extreme qualifications for who could deserve that title)

Rei's house

I’m insane and I know a lot about interior design against my will so I used it to make a rough floor plan of Rei’s house

This wasn’t an easy thing to do for two reasons: 1) the only rooms shown so far are the living room and the hallway and 2) Newo doesn’t know how to draw a house apparently LMAO. It’s something I noticed while skimming through the manga to get references but yeh Newo doesn’t put too much effort in backgrounds unless it’s absolutely necessary, what they do is draw the basics to give the reader an idea of where the characters are. I went through their other art and it’s also that way, tho in their pokemon art it has more detail than in knk but I would argue that since knk has to be ready within a month while their other art doesn’t it shouldn’t be surprising it’s drawn that way

Anyway here’s what I could make out so far

Rei’s house seems to be the kind that’s square rather than rectangular so let’s work keeping that in mind

The first room would be the living room which as you can see it’s pretty clear how it’s supposed to look however there are a few weird things going on with it, the first one is the couch on the left that has a ? next to it. I put it there bc there’s two panels where it doesn’t appear at all…those panels being these two

But for the sake of my sanity let’s say it’s there. Then there’s the dinning table and you can tell it’s in the same room since in the front you have the left couch that sometimes disappear. Another thing to take into consideration is the door in the far end, I put it there bc when it opens Rei looks to his right and seeing the direction Tobi is opening it it seemingly opens that way which is weird bc doors usually are supposed to open right next to walls but whatever

Next thing I want to point out is the hallway

This one is interesting bc it shows what seems to be a door close to Rei on the left side and another door in the back to his left. There isn’t another visible door which makes sense he’s probably covering with his big head but yeh I wanted to point this out bc that either means that door goes to the dinning room which wouldn’t make sense when supposedly theres already a door at the back that takes you to the living room OR Newo accidentally put the living room door in the wrong place, which could be, I don’t think they really are thinking about making it consisten which makes sense, you don’t read manga to see rooms you pay attention to the dialogue and characters

The rest of the first floor (kitchen, bathroom, laundry room) are just guesses on my part. Going on a tangent here for a moment but the reason why I made the kitchen like that has a reason you see, kitchens follow this “triangle rule” where the three most important elements of a kitchen (these being the fridge, the sink and the stove) need to be put in a triangle formation so there can be better mobility. Also important to keep in mind fridges need to be far away from stoves. If you look closely to the first picture you’ll also notice the window to the right has also a curtain. Curtains aren’t meant to be near stoves for the obvious reason that they can catch on fire so I put the sink there and the stove the other way. I’m assuming there’s a window there behind the stove too bc something something air circulation there’s a lot of science behind this stuff

Also idk if this is relevant but the entrance is also kinda easy to make out for some reason

Another thing I noticed that made me want to kill myslef is there’s this part where reinochi sits together in what seems to be the couch form the right bc in the front there’s the window HOWEVER in the very next panel you see a window behind them as if they are sitting on the left couch what they fuck 😭😭😭 bitches be rotating….like I know it’s not supposed to be like that and was a mistake Newo overlooked (the same way they’ve overlooked the fact Tobi has a turtleneck in recent chapters but I digress) but after you notice it you can’t just unsee it 😭😭😭

Anyway this house is a mess that’s why I decided to make my own floor plan that makes sense to me

The living room, dinning room and kitchen I kept them all the same as well as the bathroom and laundry room tho the change I made was the mystery door. Instead of it being in the far back I put it in the same place as the door we saw in the hallway and by the end I put the stairs that lead to the second floor and next to it a closet but now that I look at it maybe the stairs themselves can be the closet 🤔🤔🤔 you know how some stairs have like a door and space inside you know what I mean

The second floor is a bit more simple with Rei’s room right next to the stairs. The bathroom is in exactly the same place as the first floor bathroom bc plumbing is all supposed to be in the same place and next to it the master bedroom bc it’s the biggest room. There’s an extra room that leads to hell idk I haven’t thought that far

Anyway it’s almost 3 am idk why I did all this but I hope you get to enjoy my insane ramblings uwu

I've got a couple of days left in September when I want to squeeze in some time to finish a couple of books I was reading this month, and Inklings Challenge starts in a couple of days, so of course this was the perfect time to get obsessed with Victober and download a bunch of obscure Victorian books.

Oghhh the elaborate and slightly insane pranks I would pull if I could teleport.

Like imagine this.

A writer known only as The Chessboard publishes exactly one copy of a book, claiming it's "Inspired by the book House of Leaves, and things like myhouse.wad and B3313." You, not knowing what some of those are, but a fan of HoL, buy the book.

The person at the desk, who's face looks slightly off, smile a bit too wide, eyes a bit too orange thanks you. You can tell the strange facade is makeup and contacts, but it's damn good work.

Then they walk behind a small, lone pillar and you don't see them anymore. They must be really good at angling themself so that they're always on the opposite side of the pillar from you. You find it strange, but assume a logical explanation, as anyone would.

Then you take the book home, and read it. It's a pretty good read, certainly themes of subtle eldritch nature. The text in the book itself is sometimes shaped in ways that add to the story in some small, inexplicable way. Towards the end, the book is a mess in the best way possible. Ciphers, lines that seem out of place only to make perfect sense upon reading a few lines further, it's as if the book was actually made by an incomprehensible being. You go to leave a review, though the page never lets you confirm that you've read the book all the way through. There are other reviews, though, and you wonder how is that possible with only one copy of the book? Are they all fake? No, they're too varied to be fake. Everything from criticism to praise to weird psychoanalysis of the author.

You go to sleep, planning to take a quick reread of the book in the morning, to see if you missed anything.

When you wake up, the book is ever so slightly different.

Maybe it's a small detail, like the icing of a wedding cake being red instead of pink. Maybe it's a character name, or even something as large as the ending itself. Codes are different, more text is legible, it's like a youtube horror series in your very own home. You find keys to the one cipher that never changed, was never legible, always written on the inside of the back cover, always written in a very slightly different way.

"Even books change."

The next day, the book has changed once more, resembling the first time you read it, only from the perspective of a reader unaware of anything unnatural going on.

It never changes again.
