On reflection, Gareth Southgate really got his tactics right for the Euro 2024 final.
Sit in, try and counter-attack when the defence isn't in position. Trying to press against a possession based team might as well be a death wish, unless you have a phenomenally well drilled pressing system, which just isn't really possible in international football. All the evidence is in the Euro 2012 final.
I think it says a lot that the two goals that Spain scored were on the break to some degree. They weren't exactly starved of chances, but mitigating is just about all you can do to keep an advantage against a possession team.
Not trying to take control of the game isn't, and wasn't, a problem because stifling the space and not allowing for room to get up to a full sprint was very good game management.
Barcelona (Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan), Liverpool (Nottingham Forest, Atletico Madrid), Manchester City (Wolves, Brentford, Real Madrid), and Brazil (Germany) have all been beaten by the teams put in brackets using tactics that prioritised a low block and different forms of counter-attacking, because it's the easiest way to counter a team that enjoys possession.
England rode their luck as best as they could, only conceded on the break, provided themselves with the best tactics to counter Spain, were within a goal line clearance of extra time, and managed the game on their end better than they had throughout the rest of the tournament.

A thought I've ruminated on for a bit is the idea that, if you give them what they want, football fans can turn on you with an almost gleeful anger or contrarianism.
Fundamentally, the collective memory of the sports fan is short. Outside of a few collective moments, tournaments wins, massive comebacks, and so on, we forget. Often and everything outside of the broad strokes.
Both Mikel Arteta and Gareth Southgate have butted up against this. Both have produced a period of success, though not necessarily winning much, and yet consistent challenges for titles meant there was a vocal group who turned when things didn't meet their expectations.
Fundamentally, football fans sometimes think they know what they want, to compete. But you reach a horizon where, once you cross it, you're up against it. Anything viewed as less than desirable will be ripped to shreds, whether it's not winning enough, how the team plays, individual player consistency, a deficiency somewhere in the squad.
Sometimes, it's better to not give fans what they want.
