(and to those saying that it’s just a symbol of turkish pride—from what i get from it, it is very much not so. it is similar to saying that the confederate flag is a symbol of pride in the american south. even if the grey wolf is a symbol of turkey, it’s been co-opted, much like the swastika was from asian culture.)

both jude bellingham and merih demiral have received punishments, with bellingham receiving a €30,000 fine and a one match suspension which can be served within a year (meaning he can play vs switzerland later this week). merih demiral has received a two match ban from uefa matches, meaning he will miss the quarter- and semi-finals if türkiye are to progress.

Long term, I don't see how Pep Guardiola would work as England manager, nor do I see the same with Thomas Tuchel.

We go on about how England doesn't have elite managers and how other countries are years ahead of us and then immediately start salivating at the idea of elite foreign manager x because they won a load of stuff with clubs.

I'm not against the FA bringing in a foreign manager. If there's no other options, then I don't see why not. But we can't complain about the lack of top English managers and then have the FA set a precedent for not choosing to nurture an English manager or set of managers because they're not quite winning emphatically enough, or they make a misstep and all of a sudden Carsley finds himself finds himself in a situation where he isn't an option because he lost one match and said he wasn't sure about if he would get the job.

I hate the FA, man.

I think my least favourite thing about Tuchel being appointed is the fact that it's apparently OK for the FA to throw away 10 or so years of aspirational development of the English coaching structure to produce managers of a higher calibre just to essentially wave a sign at the footballing superpowers saying "we're one of you! Accept us!"

The fact that there's been such a large amount of lamentation about the lack of quality English coaches for ages now. I don't get the message the FA is going for with this because it's tantamount to saying that they haven't fulfilled their remit. Because Eddie Howe and Graham Potter didn't want the job, it's essentially striking the rest of the English coaches off. We've produced genuine modern managers over the last ten years and decided that we must get a foreign one in because we're not good enough.

Also, I don't intrinsically agree with Gareth Southgate’s patrioticness to the fullest extent, but it feels like they've thrown it all away for the sake of a big name. There's a degree of pride that I had in the team under Southgate, that it was a group of players and staff who I could look at and go 'to an extent, they represent my life and experiences'. And then they go and decide to spit in the face of that all because tuchel was out of contract and willing to listen.
