Are We Fucking Serious?
Apparently, it's racist to make references to Vodou in work. Nobody punches down on indie creators more than internet ass tarts who want to seem "moral" and "mature."
#buddy#ethnic cultures and religions will never get to the level of representation we want them to if we don't let white writers write about them#in their works#that's just the reality of the situation#that is#assuming you actually want good representation that comes from a knowledgable and/or educated place#and that you're not just masking your racism with left-wing phrases and terminology#poc already have enough of their shit appropriated the last thing we need is for you guys to appropriate our arguments and frustrations#alistor#hazbin hotel

It's just amazing to me that all the people who were having complete meltdowns in February over a video game are now on this website spitting some of the most vile, heinous, antisemitic rhetoric, is all.
#It's just. You know. What it is.#Masks off and all that#From 'this video game kills Jews' to 'yeah actually... we SHOULD annihilate them all! Brilliant'#Like it really didn't take long at all for those masks to come off.#It's just that I think you can make your point without all the 'actually we should wipe Israel+ Israelites + Jews off the face of the earth#Not even touching the people who have boiled this conflict down to 'Israel and Jews bad because white and Palestine good because brown'#Because people on Tumblr have been saying for years that the Holocaust doesn't count because 'it happened to white people/Jews are white'#Which is an entirely different can of ignorance (and I've already reblogged posts on the matter of Jewish ethnicity)#And to the people who I know will have knee-jerk responses to this:#Firstly temper yourself and use your brain please#Secondly I'm not saying all the Pro-Palestine people say this.#Just that there is a very large amount of real and vile antisemitism#And a lot of it is being propagated by the same people who back in February#Harassed people under the guise of 'this game is antisemitic' (even when actual Jews disagreed)#And who then immediately jumped on the 'Israel bad and also Jews bad and also we should get rid of them forever' train.#Like hopefully even the Pro-Palestine people can understand why that's Wrong. Hopefully.#Also do not even with the 'but that's not happening Cheyenne' because yes it is even if you don't want to face the realities of antisemitis#And the forms it takes. How deeply hated Jews still are by society--and not just Western society.#And also you know what while I dig myself a hole tonight:#Jewish people have existed in Israel longer than Christians and Muslims have existed PERIOD#And I am so over the horrible nonsensical comparisons North Americans try to make to the colonisation of the Americas by Europeans.#It is NOT the same thing and I say this as a First Nations woman with two history degrees; a classics degree; and a JD.#You sound ignorant. You are ignorant. Stop it.

Saw an IG post a while ago about the fact that autism can go undiagnosed not because of masking but because of ignorance & denial within certain cultures/ethnic groups and also racism against said cultures/ethnic groups.
Masking is not all or nothing all the time, throughout life. I’m beginning to question the significance of masking in my own late diagnosis. I can definitely mask, but people who’ve known me my whole life/a long time seem to easily make connections about my childhood. Is that because even the best maskers cannot mask perfectly or is it because I was never as good at masking as I thought I was!?

Love this documentation to explain that, although mychem was very influential and wasn’t as toxic/racist as a lot of bands in the punk/emo scene back then, there was definitely still some racism and toxicity
Although I will say for the “I love you” music video, I’m glad they didn’t cast a black actor for the man BECAUSE of the black paint. My interpretation, the body paint is representative more of chess pieces and the contrasting black and white scale of the video, not about race. Painting a black man black and having him opposite a “white” character would have been in very poor taste (like if they had painted the Asian woman yellow)
on my chemical romance's history of racism:
cultural appropriation is a neutral term that turns negative when people co-opt a culture without consideration to its people and history, or their prejudices and privileges. the rising sun japanese flag is an imperialist symbol used during japan's occupation of other countries from 1870 to 1945 (the guardian 2019). unlike other symbols of terror, the rising sun is normalized because of the japanese government's refusal to acknowledge its history. the symbol's meaning was popularized a few years ago when people from south korea protested its legality in the 2020 tokyo olympics (bbc 2020). aware or unaware of its history, americans have long appropriated the rising sun. in part because of their fascination with japanese art, in part because of orientalism -- a fixation on asian cultures that centers "exoticism".
my chemical romance has been associated with the rising sun symbol a couple of times. frank iero used to have a tattoo of it. gerard way designed frank's killjoys outfit to include it (seen in concept art and music videos). it is often used in mcr fanart.
tokenism is when something contains limited diversity to divert criticisms for the lack of it. my chemical romance has had a very white cast of characters in their music videos and stories. in the "i dont love you" music video, a main character is in black body paint. in the casting call, they specifically asked for a white man (there is 100% an online source -- please let me know if you have it). even casting a black person for this role would place him in a video that appropriated his skin color to mark his "difference" from the light-skin female character.
the female character points to the band's main problem with tokenism. if they arent casting a white woman, theyre casting a light-skin asian woman. the woman in the "i dont love you" mv is fetishized for physical traits stereotypically attributed to east asian women: big eyes, daintiness. east asian women feature most prominently aside from the band and main characters in the "welcome to the black parade" music video and photo shoot. the photoshoot is the only place where an ashy-faced black man and ambiguously tribal? brown man are seen (brought in by photographer chris anthony per the "making of the black parade" book). the director antagonist of the danger days music videos (shown in "sing") is a japanese woman. she is the only main character of color in the music videos and the killjoys: california comics. the focus of this post is on my chemical romance, but the comics are important to showcase that the reality is never "color-blind casting" or "limited roles". it's mostly white creatives (band members and directors and artists) who ignore non-white people when they cant use them, reflected as much by gerard way years later (nyt 2019).
"japan takes over the world" is a media trope that is built on the late 20th century fear of the return of imperial japan. this trope frames japanese people as unique aggressors, feeding into "yellow peril" fears of asian people "taking over" the white race. this trope is suggested all over the danger days universe, where the corporation BL/ind overthrows the US government. the appropriation of the japanese modern flag and lettering on the killjoys outfits, the primary BL/ind villain being a japanese person who only speaks japanese in videos, the official BL/ind website having a ".jp" domain and english-japanese translations. japanese people and culture only exist in this universe to decorate and threaten.
the point of this post is not to punish my chemical romance. in the decade+ since, they have made meaningful changes -- the sing it for japan project to aid japan during the 2011 earthquake-tsunami, developing diversity in gerard's comics / tv show, a mexican-american main character in the 2020 summoning video. people of color treated as real goddamn people.
however. all these faults exist in frozen time. there is no discussion attached to the work. so anyone, fan or casual, may come across it and not notice or care for these important issues. i know all this shit and i still fail to see instances of what i highlighted. it's difficult locating not only your own prejudices but those of others. those you look up to.
"my chemical romance" is the product of many people from 2001 to 2013. many of these people were male, white, american, and/or, most radically, liberal. clearly laying out what they did wrong is important. being careful with history and culture and personhood is important. prioritizing growth is important. constantly. forever.
#and please do not say the makeup in WTTBP is tribal#it’s literally just an “eye mask’ of black paint#if we’re gonna get technical#completely white body paint is used in a celebration of girls becoming women in Africa#I can’t remember which ethnic group it was though#if you need sources on that I can look back into my textbook and provide them

So the news coverage of anti-war protests in the city has been woeful lacking etc etc despite police putting a kid in hospital and beating on seniors and women etc etc. Looking at what is there, all that’s included in the article is one picture of dozens of Palestinian flags and posters held up in the air and then snapshot of like fifteen settler colonialist counterprotestors lined up on the sidewalk with the caption ‘large protests.’ Lmao. Regardless it’s educational to look at the colonialists’ posters to see what the hell kind of motivations they have to be at the pro-genocide protest.
Poster 1: ‘our love is stronger than our hate.’ Insane, inane, stupid, obfuscating, the poster makes no sense in the context of the protest (for apartheid, against liberation, and for the continued bombardment of injured and starving civilians). There’s no possible way to interpret it that makes sense, and that’s the point of the poster. The closest thing to a message is: that the anti-genocide protestors are wrong because Israelis as a people have a peaceful nature and only support the murder of journalists, aunts, fathers, cousins, mothers of girls who just turned 5, daughters beloved of their parents, because it’s the ‘right thing’ and can be trusted to stop when it’s no longer ‘the right thing.’ The message of the poster is: Canadians should support everything the state of Israel does because Israelis are definitionally good people. Oh But Don’t Apply This Logic To Anyone Else.
Poster 2: ‘free gaza from hamas’ a more straightforward delusion. The poster asserts that Hamas, which has existed for less than a third of Israel’s existence, retroactively justified every brutality carried out by the government of Israel from 1948 to present, and tries to paint the ethnic cleansing of Palestine as retribution rather than a planned and anticipated part of Israeli policy. Also papers over the fact that Likud has been a major supporter and funder of Hamas for over a decade.
Poster 3: ‘Assad killed Arabs but nobody cared because he wasn’t a Jew.’ This one is another straightforward case of historical revisionism. NATO acted in concert against the Assad government in Syria. People very much did care. There was no protest movement in western/global north countries against the Assad government because there was no need. The US government position was broadly supported by the populace. Insane fuckin poster but anyway just goes to show: these people live in an alternate world.
The more insidious side to Poster 3 is that it doesn’t even pretend to justify the murder of twenty thousand people in less than two months. Poster 3 states that Israel’s war crimes are comparable to the brutality of the Assad regime and that it should be supported anyway. Poster 3 says that there is no crime Israel commits that cannot be justified, because someone somewhere in history has done worse. The subtext to this poster is that the military and economic power of a Jewish state must be preserved at any and all cost. If another state has enriched itself by genocidal means, Israel should be permitted to do the same.
Poster 4: ‘children in Gaza have no water to bathe, there are no children in the kibbutzes.’ Moving on from the outright lie, that children in Gaza aren’t dying at one hundred times the rate of to children killed by Hamas and indiscriminate IOF attacks in Israel, this poster echoes Poster 3’s message. It acknowledges the crimes of Israel against the innocents of Palestine and states that any and all cruelty towards Palestinian children is justified by any harm that has ever been done to an Israeli child by a Palestinian. All Palestinians must suffer for the crimes of any Palestinian, and no Israeli should suffer for the crimes of another Israeli. Poster 4’s message is that the murder of Palestinian children is directly linked to the murder of Israeli children, and acknowledges that Israel’s campaign of war crimes is exactly that—collective punishment.
So, barring, again, blatant lying, the mindset of the pro-genocide protestor is
1. Israel is tautologically The Good Guys. Anything Israel does is justified because it’s Israel, any crime of the state is either Justified or Unavoidable.
2. Colonialists are aware that Israel is conducting an ethnic cleansing and the brutal murder of a city. They believe that the crimes of Israel are irrelevant because, again, to them Israel is definitionally good. There’s nothing that Israel could do that isn’t worth it for more political or economic power for the state.
3. Obvious but still insane to see outright stated: colonialists believe that all Palestinians deserve to suffer terribly because they are Palestinian. The collateral damage isn’t collateral, it’s the point.
4. As stated by that tweet that sums it all up nicely: any mildly unpatriotic action by any Palestinian justifies all Israeli atrocities before and after. No atrocity by Israel justifies any mildly unpatriotic action by any Palestinian.
#kelsey rambles#the good thing about mask off: mask is off#the bad thing about mask off: you have to face down the fact that no it’s not stupidity or delusion or what have you.#there just are people in the city who believe in ethnic cleansing and genocide and would like more of it to continue with less fuss#which is a fact of life. we got neonazis we got anti-Muslim hate crimes we got police murders of black people#at the same time it’s jarring to see that these people feel no qualms about waving their ‘kill all Palestinians’ flags about the place
