How would your MC / Ethan cope if they ended up divorced? Would they be friendly after? If they had kids could they coparent together well?
I am genuinely obsessed with this question because I've been meaning to write a MC/Ethan divorced fic for a while, but here is my HC.
Generally, I don't think they would be good at being divorced. In my HC, Ethan and Charlie are very good at breaking up, but they're not good at staying broken up. I don't think that would change if they got divorced. Even if they remained separated for the rest of their lives, they would continue to be the "one that got away," and would likely have periods of romantic involvement over their lifetime. At their most toxic, they would be the couple screaming at each other over the division of assets and then making up and pausing the divorce that weekend. Generally, I see them as the couple that just doesn't stay apart, even if they have to change the nature of their relationship.
If they didn't have children, they would be very, very messy. They would always want to respect each other, especially professionally, but I see them getting messy -- torrid affairs just to break up a few months later, starting fights just to have a reason to talk, using others to make them jealous, moving away just to come back home to the other, etc. Particularly around the dissolution of the marriage, they would be very argumentative and make some pretty deep wounds as they lashed out. I could see them mellowing out after a few years, finding a way to respect each other, and settling for something between life apart and life together. I think they would do well with a relationship like the one he had with Harper -- friends who love each other and maintain separate lives while remaining involved.
If they had children, they would put in a lot more effort and at least keep their mess out of their children's view. Especially given Ethan's childhood trauma, they would go to great lengths to minimize the trauma to their children. Instead of wallowing in their anger, I think they'd lean into their despair and disappointment. The divorce would be amicable, and any disagreements would happen out of sight. As much as they suffered, they would feel great pressure to keep it to themselves, and I wouldn't be surprised if they set unrealistic expectations of how perfectly they had to separate and felt tremendous guilt when they failed. If they got divorced, I think it would have to be over their fundamental disagreements on how they wanted their lives to go -- how much should they work? How do they raise their children? Who gives and who takes? For that reason, it would likely be more difficult to reconcile, and they'd be very hesitant to get their children's hopes up.
But they would make sure they were present for all the big moments, and their intentional respect and amicability would likely turn to friendship. Even if they had other partners, I think there would always be a bond between them, and truly, I would not be surprised if they worked out their differences and remarried at a later date.

How would each of your pairings do with this?
Hay! Thanks for the question.
Brooklyn and Thomas: Living in LA, they have done this many times throughout their relationship. Usually, they will talk to each other or listen to music or do something to pass the time.
Claire and Ethan: I have actually thought about writing a fic where this happens during the "reset" so I'm not going to go into detail about it but I think they would be fine about it from book 3 onward as they would just talk.
Adelaide and Tobias: They would start of talking but they would eventually get annoyed with each other. Since Tobias is the main one to drive, I also think Adelaide may fall asleep in the car.
Charlie and Derek: Pretty much since they have met, they have travelled together. They will usually play little games or listen to music. Charlie is usually the one to drive so Derek would be the one to fall asleep.
Any other questions?

I like this idea so here are what my MC's and their LI's are listening to this valentine's day.
AME MC: Catherine "Charlie" Howard X Derek Taylor
Charlie: I HC that this year is between Book 1 and Book 2 so while I think Charlie and Derek definitely like each other. I think Charlie is having some doubt about their future together, which makes me think of this song.
Derek: Derek is a swiftie and I think that he's also thinking a lot about his future with Charlie and thinking if marriage would ever be something he'd want with her.
OH MC: Claire Evans X Ethan Ramsey
Claire: This is her favorite TS song and it shows how she feels about Ethan. He makes her crazy and she wants to love him for as long as she can.
Ethan: I feel that this year Ethan is reflecting on his relationship with Claire. While their relationship didn't have the greatest start with Ethan trying to deny what they had, he still cared for her and now that he has her, he won't let go and will find a way to make them work even if it gets tough
OH OC: Adelaide Barnes X Tobias Carrick
Adelaide: Well because my fic, Paper Rings, this was a perfect song for Adelaide to listen to. She doesn't need anything fancy from Tobias, just himself.
Tobias: He never thought that he would love someone the way he loves Adelaide or that someone would love him the way she does. But he definitely thinks she is worth it.
RCD MC: Brooklyn Moore X Thomas Hunt
Brooklyn: I think this is the song Brooklyn thinks of this year. I HC that Brooklyn is getting ready to do Six at this time and if you read that fic, you know that they were having a little trouble during rehearsals but deep down she knows that if anything bad was going on, they would be by each other's side in a heartbeat.
Thomas: Like I said above with Brooklyn, this time of year has been tough for them this year but as long as he has her, Thomas wouldn't change a thing.
Let's have a little fun...
What songs are your OTPs listening to this Valentine's Day, and why? It can be any song... for any reason. It does NOT have to be all romantic and goey - just what they're listening to, and why. Here are mine, reblog with yours - or create a new post, but be sure to tag me so I can see! 😊
Tobias / Casey:
Casey is listening to this and dancing (really badly) all around their townhome. She's bopping around thinking she looks soooo sexy, and it's kind of not... but it's so damn adorable, she gets the desired reaction from Tobias anyway. Like when doesn't she get that reaction from him anyway? lol
Tobias is a huge Frank Ocean fan, and this is one of his go-to songs for when he's feeling a little 😏😏😏. I mean, it's Valentine's Day every day in the Carrick household, so they're gonna go big or go home on the actual day. (And yes, of course it works! lol)
Trystan / Carolina:
Carolina has been trying to introduce Trystan to Latin music, and since Luis Miguel was one of her father's favorites, he's one of hers, as well. This song isn't a typical Valentine's Day song because it's about longing and heartache, but that's kind of Carolina's vibe, even when she is madly in love.
Trystan is a Wham! stan. Sorry, it's canon. lol I think he's got a whole dance routine planned out... tight jeans, leather jacket, unbuttoned shirt, sunglasses... the works. And he ROCKS it. Carolina can't stop laughing, but this is why she loves him.
Ethan / Kaycee:
Kaycee is never leaving her Taylor era, and she really doesn't care that this song was written for Joe (Joe who???), and this little song reminds exemplifies her relationship with Ethan, so it's definitely on replay this Valentine's Day.
So, this ties into the Valentine's Day fic I'm finishing off for these two. But Ethan found her really likes this album, and this song in particular has a special place in his heart. I think it will become a Valentine's Day standard in their home.
I'm tagging some who I think may want to play along below, but please, anyone can play! Just jump in!
ANYONE can play!

Okay I’m sorry I get you don’t like certain characters in Choices and that is TOTALLY fine! 100% I get it. Everyone has their own different opinions and is entitled to them. You don’t have to like a love interest. You can totally do that. But where it gets too far is that you completely batter and attack people who like, are interested in or are romancing that love interest. That is when it is not okay. This is a fictional story, a game. People can like whoever they want. If you want to have your own opinion, then please let others have theirs. Please be respectful and kind to one another.

There was something so peaceful about Ethan’s apartment tonight. Had this apartment always been peaceful? No, it couldn’t have been. Only last night, it was a mausoleum dedicated to the loss of true love.
But tonight, it was impossible to imagine these halls echoing anything but affection and contentment. The air tasted sweeter, the space felt warmer, the laughs were louder. One night of Charlie’s presence exorcised the ghosts that haunted Ethan in the middle of the night.
The change was subtle, but Ethan felt it with every step he took.
She’s here, he thought as he towel-dried his hair. She’s here, he thought as he stepped into his pajamas. She’s here, he thought as he savored the smell of her shampoo lingering in the damp air. She’s here, he thought as he padded to the living room.
Boston stared back at him through the windows – all the tallest buildings winking their congratulations.
The dim-lit space left evidence of Charlie’s presence in every corner – her shoes by the door, the crumbled pillow by her favorite chair, and the assortment of hair ties that followed her every step. Ethan was greedy for more of it, his usual tidiness be damned.
Ethan poured himself a glass of water and tapped the keypad of his laptop, waking it so he could check the time. With Charlie, time seemed to stop, but just as he suspected, it had continued for the rest of the world. It was late, so late that they should have been in bed hours ago if Charlie wanted to be well-rested for work tomorrow. But Ethan didn’t regret a moment of their night, nor was he eager to go to sleep now.
Stifling a yawn, Ethan curiously opened his notifications, and he was startled by the staggering amount.
At the top of the screen were the expected messages. HR paperwork for his new position with the hospital. Confirmation emails for cancelled movers. Pleas from a devastated recruiter trying to convince him to leave Boston anyway.
Then, there were the text messages reacting to the news. The Edenbrook rumor mill worked quickly, and by the time Ethan picked up Charlie from work, there were already whispers about their illicit affair.
Harper’s message came first. She was happy to hear that Charlie and Ethan were together, but she chastised Ethan for keeping the secret in the first place, though she insisted she’d sensed it long ago. She demanded dinner with the two of them as an apology, and Ethan typed back his assent, apologizing for lying to his friend and promising to make dinner reservations as soon as possible.
When Ethan sent his reply, he was surprised to realize that he was looking forward to dinner with Charlie and Harper. It wasn’t the first time that the trio spent time together, but it would be the first dinner where Charlie and Ethan didn’t have to perform, stifling themselves to avoid drawing attention to their relationship. Ethan liked the idea of integrating Charlie fully into his life – acknowledging the long-held truth that she was the most important part of it.
Above Harper’s gracious congratulations, Tobias Carrick sent a string of texts. It was clear that he hadn’t paced himself or censored a single thought, resulting in a string of consciousness as Tobias unraveled the revelations.
TOBIAS: I KNEW IT! I can’t believe you got caught MAKING OUT with a RESIDENT before you told me!
TOBIAS: Though Charlie is wonderful.
TOBIAS: So why does she like you then? She knows you enough to know better. How did you convince her to date you?
TOBIAS: Someone just told me you’ve been dating for a year. That better be a lie.
TOBIAS: No, it’s not. You’ve been evasive all year. That’s why, isn’t it?
TOBIAS: Then again, you’re always evasive and awkward.
TOBIAS: My office is next to yours, and I swear I heard noises today.
TOBIAS: Just heard the news that you’re leaving. Don’t fret. I’ll be the leader the Diagnostics Team has always needed.
The last message came a few hours later, when Tobias had clearly processed the news and felt it necessary to give a more cohesive and gracious response.
TOBIAS: Seriously though, congratulations. I’m proud of you.
TOBIAS: But don’t screw it up.
Ethan didn’t really consider Tobias a friend – not after their antagonistic history and current conflicts. But this string of texts tugged on some part of Ethan’s heart that had once considered Tobias his best friend. Perhaps it was worth trying again, even if this was just evidence that Tobias was as insufferable as ever.
ETHAN: Thank you.
There wasn’t much else to say, so Ethan didn’t bother trying. And frankly, for him, it was quite a lot.
After Tobias’s messages, there were a few more. Some of Charlie’s friends reached out to say they were happy for them. Sienna tentatively endorsed the relationship, though she reserved the right to murder Ethan if he messed up again. Jackie’s threats against Ethan were far less veiled, and Bryce sent at least a dozen excited emojis.  Naveen wrote with glee, boasting that their reunion had all gone to plan. When Ethan questioned Naveen’s direct defiance, Naveen ignored the question and offered the happy couple a weekend at his lake house to celebrate. Gracious for the offer (and Naveen’s interference), Ethan didn’t push it.
Nor did he need to push it.
Because there she was – his darling, wonderful Charlotte.
With Jenner close on her heels, Charlie wandered into the kitchen. The familiar scent of coconut and vanilla followed her, enveloping Ethan’s senses long before she looped her arms around his waist and nuzzled into him.
“There you are,” Charlie murmured, resting her cheek on his bare back. His skin was warm and scented with the mixture of their respective body washes – each still sitting in Ethan’s shower as if no time had passed.
In some ways, that made Charlie sad. She didn’t like to picture Ethan ending each night, staring at her half-empty bodywash and refusing to throw it away, even when he’d lost hope of her ever coming home. But the grief for their lost time was only a momentary interruption. In its wake, gratitude emerged. Because she had come home, and the bodywash was still waiting for her.
Ethan smiled softly, abandoning his laptop and twisting his body so that they were face-to-face.  He leaned down to kiss the crown of her head, and Charlie shifted, leaning further into his embrace.
“What are you up to?” Charlie asked, her voice still in a daze.
The day had been so perfect – their reunion, their afternoon, their time at home. They’d spent most of the evening tangled in Ethan’s sheets, but not a moment of it had been quiet. They’d consumed each other in every way possible, from touch to speech. No time had passed, yet there was so much to catch up on.
“Missing you,” Ethan confessed.
Charlie laughed, “It’s been ten minutes since I kicked you out of the shower so I could actually wash my hair without you distracting me.”
“Way too long.”
“You’re ridiculous,” Charlie rolled her eyes, but it was the blush creeping up her cheeks that made Ethan smile. He kissed the flush as it spread up her skin, and he smiled against her cheek as she laughed.
Had anyone else ever been so happy?
“But really,” Charlie playfully swatted Ethan’s shoulder, “What are you doing? If it’s work, I’ll be obligated to make fun of you.”
Ethan shook his head, shifting so they could both face the laptop, “You’ll enjoy this.”
With a few clicks, Ethan brought up Tobias’s text thread. Somehow, the messages were even funnier from Charlie’s perspective. He lit up as he watched her read the messages, laughing at things he hadn’t even noticed before. Then, he showed her the other congratulatory messages. He thought she would like to see the well-wishes, but really, it was a silent effort to show he embraced the promises he’d made to her. He wanted her to know that he wasn’t hiding her anymore.
And Charlie appreciated every bit of it.
She reveled in the idea of dinners with friends. She wanted to be Ethan’s “plus one” to every event, even she’d have to throw her own party to get the opportunity. She liked how easily they talked about it, how Ethan actively participated in their planning without any pressure.
It was night and day from the man she’d once stormed out on.
Her chest ached with pride.
When Ethan reached Naveen’s message, he almost seemed nervous. As if suggesting a weekend away might break their fragile perfection.
“What do you think?” Ethan asked, when Charlie had sufficient time to read the exchange, “A weekend at the lake?”
Ethan had a whole pitch planned out. He was ready to remind Charlie that spring had just reached the city, the sunshine melting the ice and promising new beginnings. They could get out of the city and reconnect in the place where they’d first fallen in love. It felt like the right place to start their new chapter.
But a pitch wasn’t necessary.
“Yeah,” Charlie smiled softly, “A weekend with Dr. Ramsey. Sounds perfect.”
“A weekend with Dr. Greene,” Ethan echoed, mirroring her soft smile as he rubbed a gentle pattern on her back.
Charlie leaned into Ethan’s side, exhaustion peaking through their blinding happiness. Both of them were tempted to evade sleep altogether and stay awake all night, trading their wasted hours of rest with the promise of tender whispers and sacred promises. But relaxation had already seeped into their bones and lowered their defenses. They were both fighting to stay awake.
It was Ethan who declared the first move.
Pressing a tender kiss to Charlie’s forehead, Ethan suggested, “We should go to bed.”
“No, no,” Charlie shook her head, “It’s too early.”
“You have to be at work in a few hours,” Ethan reminded her, though he lacked conviction. He was just as willing to stay up all night as she was, if not more so since he didn’t have a morning shift.
“I’m a resident. I can handle a sleepless night.”
“Come on,” Ethan nudged her gently, “You’re being stubborn.”
“So are you.”
Ethan shrugged, Fair point.
Charlie eyed him warily – ready for battle. Ready for their opposing wills to dominate their minds until they were forced to pick a winner. Ready to draw blood before admitting defeat.
But then a moment passed, and it was all silly.
Charlie was tired, and Ethan would still be here in the morning. He would be there the night after, and the day after, and every day they were willing to share.
So, Charlie said, “Fine. Let’s go to bed.”
Ethan appreciated the magnanimous resolution, and he peppered her cheeks with quiet praise. Though, admittedly, he was inclined to think that everything Charlotte did was perfect. After kissing Jenner goodnight, the pair went to Ethan’s bedroom, ignoring the alarm clock on Ethan’s bedside table that would surely ruin their morning.
It wasn’t Charlie’s first time in Ethan’s bed tonight, but when she climbed into her usual place on the right side of the bed, it felt monumental.
The rose-colored glasses of their reunion lifted, and the gravity of the situation forced them back to earth. Instead of feeling silly for their reverence, they felt absurd for not having more.
War is over. The end of days never came. Insurmountable grief faded away. All the terrible things didn’t matter anymore. The past was in black and white, and the future was painted in vivid color and neon welcome signs.
Charlie is home. Charlie is in our bed. Everything is right, Ethan thought.
Charlie and Ethan tried to act casual as they settled into the sheets, but they couldn’t help but stare at the other. Their eyes were wide with meaning, communicating what neither had the bravery to say. When Charlie’s eyes began to water, Ethan quietly stroked her cheek.
After what felt like a lifetime, Ethan whispered, “I really did miss you.”
As if something like that needed to be said. As if it didn’t carry through every conversation. As if it wasn’t part of his DNA. As if she didn’t feel it with every adoring kiss and smile.
“I missed you, too,” Charlie met his honesty with her own, though her voice lacked his strength. At the slightest hint of a crack, Ethan tucked Charlie into his embrace, and Charlie took the opportunity to breath him in.
Sandalwood. Cedar. Vanilla. A hint of mint.
The smell of home, she thought.
Nestled safely in Ethan’s arms, Charlie’s eyelids grew heavy. Weeks of sleepless nights caught up with her in an instant, rendering her half-asleep in mere moments. As Ethan peered down at her, his chest squeezed with affection.
And suddenly, he knew.
He knew with absolute certainty that Charlotte Greene was his future.
He was overcome with an urge to propose right then and there. It didn’t matter that he didn’t have a ring or a plan or even ambience. Ethan just wanted to marry her. Hell, given the option, he would have run to City Hall right then and there to seal the deal.
Ethan opened his mouth to speak, but something stopped him.
We need time, he realized. The wounds were too fresh and the peace too fragile. He didn’t want to rush into anything that would endanger their precious newfound happiness, nor did he need to rush.
So, despite his overwhelming urge to the contrary, Ethan decided to wait – and it was just waiting. Not refusing or dismissing the idea. He knew they would make it, and he was sure that she would say yes when it was time.
But stopping himself from proposing didn’t eradicate all Ethan’s impulses.
No, he wasn’t out of grand gestures or over-eager requests.
“Move in with me,” Ethan blurted out.
Charlie stirred, wiping at her eyes as she sleepily asked, “What?”
“Move in with me,” Ethan repeated, less confident this time.
“You’re serious?” Charlie’s eyes widened.
“I am,” Ethan nodded, though he didn’t seem very sure. Despite his obvious commitment to the idea she move in, he didn’t have his argument ready – a rarity in itself. Ethan had never made any big life decision without a reasoned argument.
“You’re always here anyway,” Ethan softened, eagerness belying every justification, “and I want you here. All the time. I want to come home to you and share our closet, and I want to add your books to our bookshelves. We’re living in the ‘in between’ – with you sometimes living here and sometimes not. I’m tired of that. I want to be with you fully. In every way I can. This isn’t home without you.”
Charlie hesitated.
She was startled to realize that she already knew the answer. Before he even started talking, she wanted to say yes. And there was no good reason to say no.
It seemed rushed, but was it really? They’d been together for over a year, and she’d spent more nights here than anywhere else. Did time apart fundamentally change that? Did they feel so fragile that sudden changes would shatter them? Or had it been the status quo that drove them apart in the first place?
And did any of it fucking matter?
Would waiting really make things better? Would a slow approach save them from future disaster? Hiding hadn’t done them any favors, nor had abundant caution kept them from starting their relationship in the first place.
Charlie wanted to come home to Ethan. She wanted to put a name to all the things they’d silently endorsed for months, including her continued presence in this apartment. She wanted to cover the space with evidence of their relationship until it was little more than a shrine.
So, perhaps she didn’t give the offer the careful consideration it deserved. Or maybe she gave it too much consideration when the answer would always be the same.
“Yes,” Charlie blurted out.
“Wait, really?”
“Yeah,” Charlie nodded, realization creeping across her features, “My answer is yes. I want to move in with you.”
Ethan breathed a sigh of relief, happily covering her face with kisses. Between excited kisses, he assured her that she could always keep her old apartment, and he would understand if she changed her mind.
Charlie stopped him, “You don’t need to do that.”
“Do what?”
“Try to form a back-up plan,” Charlie settled her gaze on his, “I’m confident we’ll work out.”
“You are?” Ethan repeated breathlessly. It was one thing for Ethan to be blind in love, but it was quite another to realize she was just as high off this feeling.
“Yeah,” Charlie rested her hand on his chest, feeling the jackhammer of his heart, “Aren’t you?”
And amazingly, he was.
Nodding his head, Ethan whispered, “Yeah, I am.”
“Good,” Charlie leaned her head against his chest, “I love you, Ethan.”
“I love you, too, Charlotte.”
That was how they fell asleep – holding onto each other with persistent desperation and adoring reverence. Like they were so lucky to even get the opportunity to fall asleep together. Like it was a gift from the universe that they were here with each other. But it was better than fate – it was deliberate choice. It was an active effort to stay.
And it was the beginning of everything.

You have some flirtatious pairing. Does it ever go too far and your MC gets jealous? What about their love interests? How do they handle that if they do?
Hi! Thank you for the question! I don't know if you're talking about all of my pairings but I am going to answer for all.
Now for Brooklyn and Thomas, Thomas isn't very flirty with anyone (except for Brooklyn). Brooklyn can be flirty at times but not at the same level she is with Thomas and I don't think he has ever really gotten jealous because there is a vast difference between the way she acts with others and how she acts with him.
For Claire and Ethan, Ethan has gotten jealous a few times, one of those times being in my fic called Reunion. He gets jealous of Claire's ex, Christian, especially after he gets a position at Edenbrook (which I hope to write more about in the new year), but he gets reassured by Claire that they would never get back together. Claire has also gotten jealous a few times because of Ethan's exes but those thoughts dissipate when after they get married and she realizes the difference between how Ethan acts with them versus her.
For Adelaide and Tobias, neither of them have really gotten jealous. They both have a good communication system and tell each other when something doesn't feel right (such as a relationship between their partner and someone else). Also anyone with a pair of eyes can tell that they're very much together and know not to even try anything.
For Charlie and Derek, both of them did get jealous during their first season of the show, Charlie especially because of Derek's relationship with Ivy (before she found out it was for the show). Derek also does get a little jealous of Charlie's relationships with Adam (default name for Handsome Stranger) and Mackenzie (default name for beautiful contestant) but once it is time for the second season, it has all pretty much stopped.
Thanks for asking!

Eight Weeks After Chemical Attack
“Uh-oh, look what the wind blew in!” The stout, grey-haired man behind beamed as if he saw a long-lost friend. “Get over here, you bum! Where the hell have you been?”
The Puddingstone Tavern was to Kenmore what Donahue’s was to Edenbrook, and for nearly a decade, Tobias all but lived there. His signature smirk was firmly in place as he sauntered to the bar like a king returning to his domain.
“Has it been that long, Charlie?” Tobias said, vigorously shaking the man’s hand. “I was here last Tuesday, for Christ’s sake.”
Charlie made a show of pulling the calendar down from the wall and turned to Tobias with a grin.
“Last Tuesday, and if this thing is correct, today is Thursday. So, nine days! You’ve been MIA for nine days, and we didn’t see you for a week before that. We’re used to you being here after every shift. What happened? Was it something I said?”
“You know I don’t scare easily. It would take much more than you to scare me away.”
“So then, what’s the story?” Charlie pressed, placing Tobias’s favorite beer in front of him just as a dark-haired waitress with crystal blue eyes passed, eager to insert herself into the conversation.
“Word on the street is Carrick has a girlfriend,” she teased.
“A girlfriend? A girlfriend!” Charlie’s belly shook when he broke into a hearty laugh. “Oh, God! That’s a good one. A decade he’s been comin’ here, and I’ve never seen the same woman on his arm more than once.”
“Now that’s a damn lie,” Tobias defended. “I brought a few of them here twice. I think one even made it three.”
“Sure,” Charlie shrugged. “But normally, we'd see you with a different one between their visits. I’d believe you were abducted by aliens before I’d believe you had a girlfriend. A girlfriend,” Charlie was so busy snickering he hadn’t noticed that Tobias was no longer laughing along.
“Yeah...” Tobias smiled sadly, “Could you just imagine?”
Charlie left to tend to another patron, leaving Tobias alone with his thoughts. He couldn't even say why he hadn’t been there? It wasn't Casey. He only saw her once, all right, maybe twice a week. Sure, they texted most nights, but that was no reason to stay away. No matter, he reminded himself, she was not his girlfriend. That much he knew was true. So, it was absurd to think she had anything to do with this.
He tried to shift his focus, but Charlie’s barrelling laughter kept replaying in Tobias’s mind. “A girlfriend? A girlfriend!... I’d believe you were abducted by aliens before I’d believe you had a girlfriend!”  Was it that preposterous an idea? Sure, he would have thought it was himself not too long ago. In fact, he would have worn it as a badge of honor, but he felt differently now. Now... it stung. Did anyone think that he had the emotional capacity to be anything other than a fuckboy?
He closed his eyes and took in a whiff of the stale, familiar air. It felt like home, and he should be comfortable here; but he found himself terribly out of place. Eager for a distraction, he reached over the bar to grab the remote control and put on the Celtics game. That would do it! Leaning back in his chair, he was beginning to feel at ease, but not for very long.
Two basketball quarters and two drinks in, Tobias heard heavy footsteps approaching on the worn wooden floor. He didn’t notice when they stopped behind him, but the baritone voice that followed couldn’t be ignored.
Ethan glanced over Tobias’s shoulder and rolled his eyes. “You always did have shit taste in booze.”
Tobias turned, successfully hiding his astonishment.
“This is a New Belgium Trippel,” Tobias said. "It's one of the best craft beers out there.”
“Exactly. A craft beer.” Ethan motioned for the bartender. “What’s the best Scotch in the house.”
“That would be Johnny Walker Blue.”
“I’ll take that,” Ethan nodded. “Neat.”
Tobias waited until Ethan had his drink in hand before he began a conversation. They’d spoken exactly once since the night of the attack, and while the hatchet was buried, the men were miles away from being friends.
“So, what brings you here,” Tobias asked. “You have something going on at Kenmore?”
“No, I just had it on good counsel that you’d be here tonight.”
Tobias raised a brow. “Spying on me? I don’t know... should I be flattered or frightened, Ramsey."
“You shouldn’t be either.”
“Ah! So, you’ve come to offer me a job?” Tobias snickered. “I knew you’d come begging one day.”
“No,” Ethan chortled. “We’re still awake, Carrick. This isn’t a dream.”
“So, then, why did you come to see me?”
Ethan inhaled deeply, taking a long sip of his drink as he pondered if this had been a good idea. Assuring himself he came for a reason, he continued.
“There’s no use beating around the bush. I’ve heard you and Casey have been spending a lot of time together since the attack."
He may have been able to hide his surprise before, but Tobias made no attempt to hide his expression this time, and he was not pleased.
“Whoa... whoa...whoa... Look, I don’t know if you’re keeping tabs on me or on Casey, but either way it’s fucked up. What either of us does with our time is none of your concern.”
“Actually, it is,” Ethan shot back. “Casey... Casey’s on my team, and her well-being matters to me.”
Tobias raised his beer to his smirking lips. “That’s a little above and beyond for a boss-employee relationship. Wouldn't you say? If we're being honest tonight, you may as well admit that she was much more than a resident to you.”
Ethan’s eyes went wide, the his discomfort was palpable. Somehow, both things left Tobias pleased.
“You... you know...about us," Ethan stammered.
“Look, even if Casey hadn’t told me... it wasn’t exactly a well-guarded secret. You underestimate the Boston hospital grapevine.”
Ethan focused on the back of the bar, his face turning red, though he was unsure if anger or embarrassment was the cause.
“Was." Ethan said sternly. "Whatever Casey and I shared is in the past. But she still matters to me. She’ll never be ‘just’ a teammate.”
“OK,” Tobias shrugged. “And what does any of this have to do with me.”
“I’m aware of your... history... Carrick. I know how much you hurt Casey after you stole Stefanie out from under her. But, for some reason, she still had a soft spot for you. And now... with her being so... fragile... I'm just here to tell you - don't take advantage of that, Tobias. Because if you do, you'll have to deal with me."
Tobias stared at his beer, shaking his head with a wicked chuckle.
“That's rich! That is rich coming from you, given your history. What’s the matter, Ethan? Were you planning on making a move yourself? Trying to get any potential competition out of the way?”
Ethan felt his pulse quickening as his lips formed into a line.
“She’s coping with PTSD, Carrick. I’d never do such a thing.”
“Yeah, so once again, you’re the Boy Scout, and I’m some degenerate. You’re not the only one with decency, Ethan, and I’m through letting you believe that you are. I don’t owe you any explanation, but nothing is going on between Casey and me. I care about her; I care about her a lot. She’s a friend who is going through hell right now, and I’m doing all I can to help her... not take advantage of her.”
It had been years since he and Tobias had been friends, but Ethan could still tell when there was sincerity in his eyes; he could see and hear its presence now, and that put him at ease. The hurt in Tobias’s eyes and the sincerity in his voice put Ethan at ease.
“Good. That's all I wanted to know."
Both men pretended to focus on the game as an awkward silence fell between them. It was Tobias who eventually broke the standoff; rubbing his chin, he let out a frustrated sigh.
“Ethan, I’m glad things are civil between us again, I really am. But the dirt has barely covered the big hatchet we just buried... and you have to go and do this? Don't you see you're overstepping, man...”
"You're right..." Ethan agreed, looking slightly abashed. "I did overstep... and deep down, I knew that coming in. But honestly, protecting Casey mattered more to me than upsetting you or making a fool of myself. So I did what I felt was best.”
“Protecting her... from me?”
“All right, Carrick... give up the alter boy routine. Can you blame me? If you care about her as much as you say, you would have done the same thing if you were in my shoes.”
Tobias shook his head with a sad smile. “You know, I’m far from perfect. No one is. And I’m not saying I haven’t done some messed up shit in the past, but preying on vulnerable women has never been my style, and you know that."
Ethan diverted his eyes, with a question lingering in his mind that needed to be spoken.
“Why her? You’ve been with god knows how many women. Why is Casey the one you can't let go of?”
“Do you think this is because of you?” Tobias blurted. “Because it’s not... it has nothing to do with you. Casey... she's just incredible. She’s absolutely beautiful, and I’m talking about the inside, not the out. She’s brilliant, funny, and kind, and when you’re with her, she makes you feel like you’re the only person in the world... and I’m not talking about me... she makes everyone feel that way. She sees the best in people when most want to focus on their flaws. She’s kind enough to give a jackass like me a second chance to be her friend...and there’s no way I’m going to blow that.”
Ethan gazed at Tobias with a knowing half-smile.
“Sure, but you’re not in love with her.”
Tobias swallowed hard, quietly shaking his head. “We’re friends, Ethan... we’re just friends,” he repeated, but at the moment, he wasn’t sure if he was convincing Ethan or himself. “ And what about you?”
“What do you mean...what about me?”
“Do you still love her?”
“Yes,” Ethan replied. “But not in that way. She matters to me, and she always will. I know I hurt her in the past, and I don’t want to see her hurt again. After everything that happened recently? I suppose I'm a bit overprotective.”
“Yeah... I get that. I get all of that.”
Ethan picked up his glass with a smile. “We always did have more in common than we liked to believe.”
“Yeah, well, don’t let word get out on the street. I have a reputation to uphold, and I don’t need you tarnishing it.”
“Oh, is that so?” Ethan laughed. “Imagine me tarnishing you?”
Tobias met his eyes, and both men chuckled.
“So,” Ethan said. “Are we... still good?”
Tobias shrugged. “You care about her and want to protect her. I want to do the same, so how can I fault you?”
Ethan nodded uncomfortably.  “Well, I should settle my tab...”
“Why? The night is young, and the Celtics are about to go into the last quarter. Why don’t you stay and watch with me.”
“Really?”
“No,” Tobias rolled his eyes. “Yes, really.”
“All right,” Ethan said, sliding back onto his stool. He motioned for another drink, and when it arrived, he raised it to Tobias.
“Cheers,” Ethan smiled.
“Cheers.”
Both took a long drink, then Tobias turned to his... friend?
“Ethan?”
“Yes?”
“I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
Ethan snorted in reply. “Not if you keep saying shit like that. You're not exactly Bogart, Carrick."
The men remained at the bar for at least another hour without an ounce of tension between them, and though they’d never admit it, that made them both happy. When Tobias returned home, he checked his messages one last time after slipping into bed. A smile he hadn’t felt coming spread across his face the moment he saw her name.
Tumblr media
He turned off the light on his nightstand but continued staring at Casey's message for some time. Finally putting the phone down, he made himself comfortable. We're just friends, he repeated to himself. He had promised her, just friends, and that's what they would stay... but he was beginning to realize just how how hard that would be.

PROLOGUE
"Here's the copy of the MRI you requested for Room 502, doctor," a blonde nurse dropped an envelope on the pile already in front of her.
"Thanks Kaley," she smiled and nodded briefly from the patient charts she was finishing in the nurse's station, her brunette bangs slightly rustling at the sudden movement.
She went back to the mountain of paper work she was trying to finish, her Johns Hopkins Montblanc pen squiqqling as she went. On the bottom of the last page, she wrote her full name: Dr. Heather Song, along with her medical license number.
She opened the envelope containing the scan results, and examined the writings on the sheet of paper. No tumors - meaning that the patient's headaches were probably caused by a genetic, albeit irritating migraine. She prescribed a relaxant, and handed it to Danny, along with the rest of the clipboards.
She bit her lower lip as she tapped on her fitbit: 8:39 pm - another 14 hour shift. It was another day at work in the diagnostics team. Thankfully, she loved her job, so she has no complaints for the long hours.
Scrolling, she checked the rest of her messages. Her frown turned into a smile as she read out a text from her boyfriend:
I'm done for the day. Pick you up in 20 minutes?
She took out her phone from the pocket of her white coat and texted him back, agreeing to the said rendezvous.
With a friendly nod to the night shift nurses, she stood up and walked towards the Diagnostics office, her white sneakers squeaking along with her steps. With the door behind her hissing closed, she went to her table and retrieved her sling bag. She shoved her ID badge and her phone inside, while she shutdown her PC. She retouched her lip gloss before shrugging off her coat, revealing a blue crew neck shirt, neatly tucked into her dark jeans.
She freed her shoulder length hair from the tight bun that she usually wears at work and brushed off the few loose strands. Once she was satisfied with her appearance, she grabbed her belongings and stepped out of the empty room, making her way towards the elevator bay.
As she walked through Edenbrook's ground floor hallways, her pale skin glowed against the fluorescent lights. She crossed the atrium and bid her goodbye to Bobby, the hospital's security guard, then went outside, into the cold night air.
A green bomber jacket caught her sight, and her heart immediately skipped a beat. The tall, dark figure had a backpack slung on his left shoulder, his right foot tapping along a mental beat.
"Hey, handsome," Heather slung her arm around Rafael's, tiptoeing to plant a kiss on his cheek. "Missed me?"
Rafael chuckled, as his eyes glistened in the dark, humming in agreement. He returned the compliment with a quick peck on her lips.
He gazed down at her, "Hungry, Dr. Song?"
Heather nodded in excitement. She loved his cooking, but she missed the gelateria near his place.
Fond memories flooded her, making her smile.
A year ago, Rafael first whisked her away to the same Italian ice cream shop to decompress, seeing how stressed she was with the investigation. It was the night after she called in Travis Perry to the authorities.
Ed Farrugia was just one of those patients her team took in to increase Edenbrook's struggling funds. He was Massachusetts' most popular Senator, and the media mileage he gave the hospital prevented it from going under.
But what they first thought as just another day in the job took a turn when Heather diagnosed the politician's illness as lead poisoning. By midday, she was able to confirm that the chemical element was not coming from his newly-purchased house. A quick search engine lookup returned a suspicious article about Travis, his aide. Not wanting to make conclusions without concrete evidence, she raised her own suspicions with her mentors, Dr. Ramsey and Chief Banerji. Collectively, they decided that the best course of action was to quietly alert the authorities.
That day was the first time Rafael walked into the hospital's hallways.  He got assigned to the case once Dr. Naveen called the FBI Boston field office. Rafael's discreet but valiant efforts foiled the perpetrator's sinister plans - of releasing a deadly airborne poison into the hospital room of the unknowing Senator.
He was able to stop the attack and prevented deaths, including Heather's. They later found out that the attacker wanted to take revenge on her due to her earlier attempts to treat the senator. Travis Perry admitted to sprinkling lead in the politician's assorted drinks over the years.
With the criminal charges filed and the case handed over to the district attorney's office, they were able to focus on the budding attraction between them. Several dates and a couple of samba lessons later, it bloomed into a full-on romance.
Heather easily fell for him. He was an easy guy to love. His ways are simple, uncomplicated.
He was a welcome reverie from the chaos of her first  year as a junior fellow of Edenbrook's premier Diagnostics Team. It was Rafael's sweet charms that made the unbearable, bearable. His tenacity to crack the cases he was assigned to matched her own. But his motive - of always being more than willing to serve others and his community, regardless of danger, never failed to amaze her.
When they became an item, his whole community took her in. It was a sincere group of people consisted of his grandmother, his colleagues, and the elderly at the senior center where he volunteered. Rafael also frequently hung out with Heather's friends. Sienna, Elijah, Aurora and even Jackie were nothing but supportive of their relationship.
Snapping out of her head space with a gentle nudge from Rafael, they began to leave the front steps of Edenbrook. They hadn't walked far when a familiar voice calling her name stopped them in their tracks.
'Heather. Dr. Heather Song!"
Both turning around, they saw a tall man approaching them hurriedly. She had to raise her head to gaze at him as he neared.
"ADA Lahela," she saluted him in a greeting. She gave him a polite smile, letting Rafael go briefly to shake the hand of the man in the gray suit. "To what do we owe the pleasure of your company?"
"Something very urgent. I wouldn't spoil your RnR, but this really can't wait until tomorrow." Bryce Lahela, the rising star of the Boston's District Attorney's office, nodded back at Raf, catching his breathe.  "Ah, Agent Aveiro, hi. I believe this also very much concerns you." he also waved at Rafael, a hint of unsteadiness in his voice.
She tried to recall the last time she saw Bryce. It was 3 months ago, on the last day of the trial of Travis Perry. The fierce young lawyer eagerly took on the case of Senator Farrugia, who single-handedly put Perry behind bars for the rest of his life.
Her head perked a little, sensing the quick falter in the young prosecutor's greeting. She waved off his apology, expressing she didn't mind the intrusion. She trusted him enough to make the judgment that this couldn't wait. They were friends after all.
"There's been a new development in the Ed Farrugia case," the assistant district attorney clutched his leather shoulder bag and pulled out a peculiar looking paper.  "Someone sent a blank message to my office email address an hour ago, it included this file attachment," he handed the page to Heather, a look of concern crossing his face.
Beside her, Raf tensed.
The black and white printout, with words spelled from cutouts of magazines, knotted Heather's stomach in a million ways.
It's not over, Dr. Song.
The sinister note made her skin crawl, unleashing a wave of terror within her.
She immediately knew right then that the mirage of her quiet life threatened to crumble. She just didn't know how much.
Tagging also @choicesficwriterscreations for #fics of the week.

=================================
The weeks turned into months and before they knew it Ethan and Casey were taking lunchtimes to the park, sitting in the coolness of shade in the warm summer heat. Casey had taken to ordering lunch to Ethan’s apartment or making them a small picnic. Ethan would then pick her up from outside his apartment block and they’d drive to the nearest park and take a stroll around the duck pond or small nature trail before heading back to Ethan’s car and getting back to their respective jobs. The past few months hadn’t been easy on Casey’s family or Bryce and his family if she were to be honest with herself. Tabloid headline after tabloid headline was speculating about what ‘trouble could be in paradise’ for the couple that seemed to be so happily engaged mere months ago.
Truth is, they weren’t engaged; not really. Casey hadn’t said one word to Bryce that didn’t consist of “fuck.”, “dickhead.”, “off”, or a phrase that was similar to that of “If I wanted to catch an STI I’d come home.”
She despised him more than she did her parents. They could have picked from any eligible bachelor for her to fake a marriage to, but they had to pick him. The most insufferable and intolerable man on planet Earth.
Today however, Casey had brought the picnic to Ethan’s office as the rain poured down outside, ping ponging off the Boston streets that are quieter than normal as people stay in work or at home, diving into the nearest store for shelter; or making their way into coffee shops using their jackets as a temporary umbrella from the natural shower that threatens to soak through their clothes.
As she knocked on his office door, Casey shivered a little from the cold and the rain that dampened her clothes as she forgot her umbrella and had to run from the taxi into the hospital. After a few moments the door opened, Ethan’s greet smile falling into a look of concern as he saw Casey shiver.
“You’re soaked.” he exclaims
“Yeah, that… tends to happen when one forgets their umbrella.” she giggles nervously.
He shakes his head with a bemused smile and steps aside, opening the door wider and inviting her in, closing it again swiftly behind her.
“I’ve borrowed a round table from the cafeteria.” he states, motioning to the table that’s a new addition in the corner of his room. Casey looks over at it and smiles. “Your desk would have been fine, you know that right?”
“I do.” he nods, “but as it goes, I wanted this to be somewhat of a romantic lunch. My desk is where I work. I’d rather keep the two things separate.”
“You say that as if you we’re making me lose my mind on there mere months ago, not giving a damn who heard us.” Casey laughs as she sets up the food.
“Yes. Well… I-” he stammers as his face starts reddening slowly.
“Oh my God! You still think about it don’t you?” Casey teases with a sly grin.
“No,” Ethan protests; “I do not!”
“Ahhh the man protesteths too much.”
“Protesteths?”
“It’s part of MY language so keep any criticisms to yourself please.”
Ethan holds his hands up in surrender as he crosses the room and takes his seat next to Casey. As they settled they gave each other smiles before falling into easy conversation that flowed naturally for the next hour as they made their way through the picnic. As they finished Ethan let out a yawn.
“Tired?” Casey asks
“Just a bit. Thank God that I only have 4 hours left today.” he sighs.
Casey gave him a kind smile. “I thought I’d order pizza and dough balls for dinner tonight. I was going to do it so it arrived shortly before you were due back but I can wait and let you have a nap first if you like.”
“That’s… awfully thoughtful of you.”
“Well, our secret date did overrun and ended up in your bedroom last night.” she chuckles.
He responds with a chuckle of his own, leaning over to press a kiss to her cheek. She smiled at the gesture, turning her head and captured his lips with her own as she gently pulled him back in by his tie.
“Oh!” he gasps with surprise before responding to the kiss with a deepened passion of his own, the pair reluctantly pulling apart when a knock sounds at the door.
“One moment please.” Ethan calls out then turns back to Casey. “We’ll have to go on another date soon.”
“You plan another stealth outing?” Casey grins imitating a move like one of Charlie’s Angels.
“You’re insufferable.” Ethan laughs looking bemused.
“Yet you still choose to date me in secret.”
“I like you. Why would I?” he asks. “And considering you accept all the invitations and seem to enjoy my company, I guess you like me too.”
Casey smiles up at him with a warm softness and gives him a nod but one thing nagged at the back of her mind.
No you idiot, I love you; but I’m hiding from a fake engagement so we can’t publicly be together the way I want us to be.
Another knock sounds and they jump springing apart from their hug they had naturally fallen into. Ethan cleared his throat as Casey started to pack the tupperware away in the bag she was carrying with her.
“Come in.” He called out.
The door opened and a nurse walked in, placing papers on his desk. “These are the test results for Ms Schneider you ordered Dr Ramsey.” he smiles
“Thank you, Samuel.” Ethan nodded, pulling his eyeglasses from his jacket pocket, and placing them on before picking up the paper and looking at them closely.
“I’ll… see you at home.” Casey spoke up as she reached the door the nurse had just left.
“Hrm?” Ethan hummed looking up, gasping slightly as Casey smiles back at him. “Oh! Yes. I’ll see you at home. Enjoy the rest of your day.” he smiled politely.
Casey nodded and left with a wave over her shoulder, gently closing the door behind her. As she waited at the elevators, a doctor stopped beside her. She gave a polite tilt of her head and a smile, the doctor respectfully returning the gesture. A few seconds later he speaks up.
“Are you Casey Valentine?” he asks.
“Uh… yes.” she answers a bit confused.
“Dr Naveen Banerji.” he smiles back kindly extending a hand, Casey shaking it just as the elevator arrives and they step inside.
“Where is it you’re heading Miss Valentine?”
“Uh. ground floor. Thank you.”
Naveen stood watching as the door closed before he asked his question. “What do you think of Ethan?”
“I’m sorry?” she asks, a little stumped at his boldness.
“Sorry let me give you some back story. Dr Ramsey was my intern when he started here. We’re close and he’s somewhat like a son to me, He’s told me about you.”
“Oh.” Casey responds in surprise. “Good things I hope.”
“He’s told me about your secret dates, explained the tabloid headings I’ve seen.” Naveen sighs as they step out of the elevator. “It seems you lead quite the troubled life Miss Valentine.”
“Please, call me Casey.” she smiles politely.
“Only if you call me Naveen.”
“You’ve got yourself a deal.” Casey chuckles as they shake hands. “But yes,” she continues with a sigh. “Things are quite complicated and troubled at the moment.”
Naveen smiles sympathetically. “You’ll make it work. I’ve caught you two looking at each other sometimes. You can't fake a bond like the one you two have. You’ll break free of the farce and get your happily ever after. I can feel it.” he nods.
“Really?” Casey ponders and Naveen nods in response as he pulls a card from his pocket. “If you need anything, call me. It’s the number that goes directly to my office. My lunch hour is 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.”
Casey nods as she accepts the card, Naveen holding her elbow and patting it softly with a look of approval in his eyes.
“I best get back to work, Casey. It was lovely meeting you.”
“You too, Naveen.”
The two part ways with a wave and smile before Casey heads to the exit, sliding the card into her back pocket. As she passed the water feature, she looked up to Ethan’s office to see him looking out pensively at the life that was bustling below now that the rain had died off. She waved up to him with a smile and after a moment he noticed her and waved back with a small smile.
As Casey walked around the corner and out of view from Edenbrook an uneasy feeling settled in her stomach and she felt like she should head back into the hospital, but she knew she had work to get back to so she pushed on. That proved to be a mistake when suddenly her world went black as arms restricted her and something covered her head.
“AH!” she screamed, trying to kick out and get her attackers off of her.
“Hold her tighter!” one angry voice shouted.
“I’m trying!” another shouted back.
“Get. Off of me!” Casey yelled as she managed to stomp on one of their feet with her wedged heel, hearing a crunch and yelp of pain. The grip around her arms left as they fell to the ground giving her the freedom to blindly escape her other attacker.
Just as she had been taught, she got them into a position where she had the power before she locked him in a chokehold until they fell to the ground.
------------------------------------
As Ethan was preparing to leave work his office phone rang.
“Hello, Dr Ramsey at Edenbrook hospital speaking. How may I help you?” he said professionally, only to have his professionalism drop when he was informed it was the police calling. “Okay.. Right… I see… Yes. Mhmm. … Well, thank you for letting me know, officer. Of course. Thank you again. Bye now.” Ethan smiled until he placed the phone back on the receiver with a troubled and deep sigh.
When he returned home, he heard sobs coming from the bedroom he was allowing Casey to stay in. His heart was already aching, and the sounds made it worse. He approached the door and raised his hand to knock but stopped himself. He should just let her go, is what he thought to himself. Turning away and heading to his own room, listening; and waiting to hear the front door to his apartment open and close again. Once he did, he made his way to the kitchen, where he found a pizza box with a note on it.
“Ethan.
I’m sorry to leave you like this. I have to abide by my parents' rule for the safety of both of us. These past few months with you have been amazing. The most free and happy I’ve felt since I was young. Please know that I still love you, and it’s you my heart is with. I will return to you once it’s safe to do so, but for now. This has to be goodbye.
All my love,
Casey xx
P.S: Tell Naveen I said hello when you next see him? I met him today, he seems to think of you as his son. It was nice to meet a parent. Oh and enjoy the pizza, I put a little bit of myself into it. You’ll see. Sleep well tonight, know I’m with you.”
A tear slipped down Ethan’s cheek as he looked up from the note and opened the box, a breathy chuckle escaping his lips.
“Oh, Casey.” he sighed shakily with a bittersweet smile upon seeing the chili on the pizza.
That night both went to bed yet had trouble sleeping, their performances at work suffered over the next few weeks as summer turned to fall and Casey's wedding to Bryce crept towards them quicker that either would have liked it to.

End of Year 1: Donahue's
The bar bursted with the sounds of a typical busy night. Donahue's usuals laughed and conversed in various degrees of drunkenness, all to the soundtrack of awful eighties top-charters drifting from the jukebox. By this point in the night, Ethan usually downed the last of his scotch and gladly showed himself to the exit.
Tonight, however, his newfound idiocy and a primal need to catch a glimpse of emerald green eyes kept him rooted to the spot.
Lilac laughed nearby, a delightful sound that could have made anyone stop and stare. Ethan, for his part, did just that, glancing at the beautiful doctor from his place at the bar. Her face was alight with mirth, green eyes sparkling with a euphoric mix of amusement and the alcohol in the few drinks she had consumed. Her smile dwindled slightly as she listened to some animated story Lahela regaled. When they moved over to meet Ethan's, as though sensing his gaze on her, the smile entirely vanished.
Her beautiful expression briefly flinched with something sad, unmistakable in the way her shoulders deflated and in the way her mouth pressed into a tense line.
“Got you covered,” Reggie said, already refilling his glass.
Ethan nodded his appreciation. “I would’ve thought you’d cut me off by now.”
The barkeep chuckled. “You take your liquor well enough,” he said with a shrug. His eyes then moved to the corner booth. “Besides, something tells me you need it these days.”
“An understatement,” Ethan muttered, before taking another swig.
Reggie replied with a knowing smile before moving down the bar. Alone and miserable, Ethan allowed himself another glance at Lilac…only to find her embracing a man he had never seen before. This stranger, evidently a new arrival, was not much taller than Lilac, with tan skin and a dark, bushy beard. Though his hair was lightly flecked with silver, he looked to be around her same age, if not only a few years older.
Lilac, meanwhile, seemed to know him well. There were fond notes of familiarity in the space between them as they separated and in the way his dark eyes studied her face.
“It's been so long!” Lilac exclaimed over the music, barely controlling her excitement.
“Too long,” the man agreed calmly, though not without a faint smile.
Lilac matched it tenfold, taking a step back to take a better look at him. “Look at you! You look the same, Charlie. You have to share your secret.”
“If there was one, you wouldn't need it. You look great.”
His dark brown eyes, piercing in their own right, took Lilac in with a quiet admiration that was almost palpable.
“What brings you to the East Coast?” Lilac asked. “Last I heard, you were teaching at UC Berkeley.”
“I still am. Though not for long, hopefully. I traveled to Rhode Island to interview with Brown. A colleague in the English department is retiring and recommended me.”
“That's great news! I really hope you get it—I remember that was your dream.”
“Thank you. That's very kind, Lilac.”
Charlie's fond smile grew the more he studied her, his expression reminiscent. Their history was etched to every line on his tan face and Ethan, feeling possessed, almost stepped in before he remembered he had no right.
Soon, the discord of the bar's ambiance drowned out their voice. Ethan, ever the glutton for punishment, glanced their way more often than necessary, his grip tightening on his glass each time. He had to remind himself that he was the one who had pushed Lilac away now that she was on his diagnostics team.
“Who is that?” an intrigued Sienna Trinh asked, her voice giddy and conspiratorial.
When Ethan returned his attention to the scene, he saw Charlie walking toward the restrooms. Lilac hovered closer to the bar, Trinh and Varma flanking her as they watched Charlie's retreating form.
“Charlie Montalvo,” Lilac replied. “My… He and I… Well, we were at UCLA together.”
“So your ex,” Varma clarified.
“That’s Charlie?” Trinh cut in, adding a small nod of approval.
“Am I supposed to know this dude?”
“Charlie–” Trinh repeated, as though that was enough explanation. “The one Lilac told us about on Adiós MFer night.”
“You can say motherfucker, Sienna.”
Trinh ignored this and pressed on. “You know, the one who's a sexy Lit professor now?”
“The one who was really good in bed?”
“Jackie, shush,” Lilac pleaded anxiously.
Varma, however, didn't seem to hear. “The one who blew your tight, little—”
“Jackie—”
“—mind? The one you said left your legs shaking each time? Best you ever had? Mr. Sexual Awakening?”
Lilac looked equal parts mortified and murderous. Ethan, on the other hand, wondered how much alcohol could help him forget what he just heard. Stomach clenched in a terrible iron fist, he decided a lobotomy would be the only way.
Trinh snorted. “That's the one. Though I was thinking more along the lines of the one that got away.”
Varma rolled her eyes. “Mine were better.”
“How about Mr. Lilac's First True Love?”
“Eh.”
Somehow, that proclamation was much worse. Unable to stand it any longer, Ethan set his glass on the counter and rose from his seat. His first instinct was to put as much distance between himself and Lilac, so he headed toward the desolate hallway that housed the restrooms.
It wasn't until the men's door opened that Ethan remembered who occupied it. By the time the dark-haired man emerged, it was too late to turn around. They passed each other in the hall, Ethan resolute on ignoring him. The other man, however, stopped, recognition on his face.
“You're Doctor Ethan Ramsey,” he said slowly, as though placing his face in his memories.
Ethan had no other choice but to acknowledge him with a small nod.
“Doctor Charlie Montalvo,” he said by way of introduction. With a slight but charming smile, he added, “Though not doctor in the medical sense like you.”
"Doctor of Literature,” Ethan added, forgetting for a moment he had overheard this tidbit. His mind scrambled to think of a reason he could give him as to why he would know that. The literature professor did not find this odd because he smiled.
“Precisely,” Charlie said. “I have colleagues in the medical field and they all respect your work. Your latest research on neurological disorders was all the rage at our last poker night.”
Charlie chuckled, his handsome features illuminated by silent amusement.
“Though, you'll have to forgive me for blanking on the exact medical terms.”
Ethan waved him off. “I can assure you I'd be hard-pressed to remember literary theory vocabulary so I'm not offended.”
The other man laughed fully now. Ethan hated how he couldn't bring himself to dislike him.
“An old friend is one of your residents. She speaks highly of you as well. In fact, she just told me it's an honor working for you.”
Their eyes found Lilac by the bar simultaneously. She was still with her friends, drinking and laughing about something. That urge to be by her side, to be the source of her happiness, burned in the pit of his stomach.
“Doctor Allende is too kind,” he said, noncommittally. “She has proven herself to be a promising and compassionate doctor. The honor has been all mine.”
Charlie nodded, not appearing surprised by this convicted statement. “I don't doubt it. Lilac is special.”
His brown eyes found her again, intently studying her as though he was watching a cherished memory. Ethan, throat tight, glanced away, suddenly feeling like an intruder. It hit him then that both men had once held the wonder that was Lilac Allende in their arms and both stood there then, after having lost her. Ethan wondered if time had helped dull the agony for Charlie. Was this what Ethan was meant to do in a few years? Simply watch Lilac from afar like the specter of his long-forgotten happiness?
With a small shake of his head, Charlie smiled at Ethan.
“It's getting late and I have to drive back to Rhode Island,” he said, extending his hand for Ethan. “Doctor, it was an honor meeting you.”
“Likewise,” Ethan returned, shaking his hand.
With one last smile, Charlie emerged into the bar, heading for the place where Lilac still laughed with her friends.
Ethan exhaled sharply, deciding it was best to call it a night. He intended to bury himself in work to forget those stunning green eyes. Fate, however, had different plans as he stepped outside ten minutes later.
Lilac stood there, a lonesome figure under a flickering lamp post, watching Charlie's car disappear into Boston traffic. Her arms hugged her figure, meek protection against the bitter chill. When she could stand the cold no longer, she turned toward the bar, only to stop at the sight of Ethan.
They said nothing, the heavy silence permeated only by the sound of the street.
“Take my jacket,” Ethan offered at last.
Lilac shook her head.
“I'm fine.”
“I insist,” he pressed, already removing it and closing the distance between them.
Lilac didn't protest, eyes fixed on him as he gently draped his jacket over her shoulders. They were so close that he could smell the hints of jasmine from her perfume. Lilac's eyes, meanwhile, feasted on him, unabashed. They roamed the plains of his face slowly and lovingly, like a lover's caress. All he wanted to do was kiss her. The way her lips parted indicated she wanted that too.
“Your friend seems…” he started moronically, a desperate attempt to stop himself from kissing her hard.
This seemed to break her out of the spell.
“Charlie?”
Ethan said nothing, holding her gaze. Understanding dawned on her features as she watched him, once again proving that she could read him like the palm of her hand. She pressed her lips into a tight line.
“You have no right to be jealous.”
“I know.”
The words were not enough to placate her hurt and anger.
“You wanted this, Ethan.”
“I did.”
“You were the one who said we'd figure it out and then avoided me immediately after.”
“I wasn't—”
“I'm not an idiot.” Lilac exhaled sharply, her shoulders deflating. It's as if the fight left her with that heavy sigh. “What is this, Ethan?”
Cowardly as ever, he refused to answer. If he did, he'd be exposing just how much he… longed for her. How much he missed her.
“What Sienna and Jackie said,” she begins, studying his features, refusing to let him hide. “You heard what they said about Charlie.”
The one that got away
Lilac's First True Love
Among other things Ethan would much rather not think about…
How could he not be boiling inside with jealousy when he wanted to be all those things for her?
Lilac broke her silence with another defeated sigh. “I told them that at the beginning of the year. Before you and I…”
They locked eyes and memories of their time together danced between them in a flash.
“Charlie used to be those things for me a long time ago.”
“And how about now?”
Lilac smiled—a sad little smile that broke his heart.
“Not anymore,” she whispered. “Not as of a few months ago.”
Stunned, Ethan watched her turn and rush into the bar, hiding a glimmer of tears.
