"Darling, bad luck seems endless." - Bucky Barnes
Tumblr media
Summary: You've always been haunted by bad luck your entire life, despising it deeply, until you meet someone who finds it amusing.
Character: dark!Bucky Barnes x Female!Reader
Author's Note: Hello, everyone; this story is for the sleepover event hosted by @the-slumberparty. What I chose is a strawberry sundae with gummy bears as the topping.
Chapter 1 , Chapter 2 .
Main Masterlist || support: Ko-fi
Thank you to anyone who gave a like, reblog, and left a comment. It motivated me to write more.
Tumblr media
Bad luck.
You always felt that bad luck followed you everywhere. Growing up, you didn't realize it, but it became clear to you after becoming an adult.
There was one time when you had prepared for an exam, but two days before, you got a high fever and had to take the exam all by yourself.
When you got an offer to study piano abroad, your father's business went bankrupt.
Then, when you finally got into your dream college, your father's business went bankrupt. Again.
When you wanted to study and paid for an extra course, the teacher lied and told you to study alone. It turned out you could learn everything from the internet. You were taken in by his sweet talk because of his experience working in the industry.
After you graduated, you went to work at a studio, but it went bankrupt because the owner embezzled the money to buy a Ferrari.
Then, you were introduced by a relative to an investment. Because you saw her enjoying the profit, you put all your money into the investment. For eight months, it went great, but after that, everything went to hell because it was a scam. You lost the money, the money that your father had left you. It still pains you.
Each time it feels like life is going your way, it soon comes crashing down when you face another misfortune.
As a last resort, you went to a priest but received no answers. You visited a shaman but still found no answers. Then, you went to a paranormal who said, “Bad luck fucks you like Zeus fucks his prey.”
‘Well, shit,’ you thought.
Not knowing what life would bring you, you tried to find another way to make money by taking a class in jewelry making. You pretended to hate it and not enjoy making jewelry.
You were scared that each time you enjoyed or liked something, bad luck would come like judgment day with no warning and take all the joy from you.
But bad luck can't be fooled. It appeared again in another form. It turned out the jewelry store owner was actually a gangster in the diamond business. It was a risky job, but it helped to pay the bills.
Sir Galileo, with his grey hair and special glasses that he always wore to appraise diamonds, was an eccentric man. He always dressed as royalty and wore white gloves. He insisted from the beginning that you call him a 'sir.'
He always brought you with him whenever he went to see a client. Specifically, your job was to drive the car, take notes, and design jewelry for clients. The clients were unique, too: mafia, drug dealers, etc.
Of all the clients, there was only one that caught your attention. You liked him because he was a regular customer and always paid upfront.
James Buchanan Barnes, or his nickname ‘Bucky’. You didn’t know much about him, but he was loaded with money. His mansion, his vintage car collection, and the rings he wore on his fingers were all testaments to his wealth.
Every time you met him, it was always at a different place. It was never the same location.
Damn, each gold and diamond in his rings could solve world hunger. Even Sir Galileo respected Bucky.
Today, Bucky called both of you again.
When you both arrived at a new location, another mansion, you couldn't help but be impressed by its grandeur. The sprawling estate was surrounded by lush gardens and towering gates. The mansion itself was a blend of modern architecture and classic elegance, with large windows reflecting the sunlight and intricate details on every corner.
Bucky looked at you while opening his arms wide. “My Da Vinci,” he greeted warmly.
You blushed when he called you that. His nickname for you always made you feel a mixture of pride and embarrassment. You looked down briefly, trying to hide your flushed cheeks.
“I can't wait to see the design you've made,” he said, turning to Sir Galileo. “And I want you to take a look at that ruby stone I got.”
“Sure,” Sir Galileo replied with a nod.
Once everyone was seated in the lavishly decorated living room, you grabbed your tablet and showed Bucky the jewelry design you had created for him. Instead of the usual ring or bracelet, you had designed a watch that fit his character perfectly—sleek, elegant, and powerful.
Bucky inhaled his cigar, examining the design closely. “This is great,” he said, a rare smile forming on his lips.
You felt a surge of pride when your work was appreciated, but you quickly dismissed the feeling. You didn’t want another bout of bad luck to hit you like a truck.
“How did you get this ruby?” Sir Galileo asked, still scrutinizing the stone with his special glasses.
“Tsk,” Bucky clicked his tongue. “Don’t remind me. My man got hurt getting that.”
“Another incident?” Sir Galileo inquired, raising an eyebrow.
Bucky exhaled smoke from his mouth, his expression darkening. “We’ve never had a casualty like this before. I feel like we have bad luck.”
You flinched when you heard ‘bad luck.’ Could it be that your bad luck had moved to Bucky?
You hoped nothing bad would happen to Bucky because you enjoyed working for him.
But once again, bad luck visited you. This time, it came in the form of a bullet shooting through the window. It was a surprise attack.
“Fuck,” Bucky cursed as he shielded you from the bullet and hid behind a chair.
“Are you okay?” he asked, his face close to yours, making your heartbeat quicken.
“I… I'm fine,” you stammered.
Bucky took a peek out the window, his eyes narrowing. “How did they find out my hideout?” he cursed.
You stayed quiet. Could it be because of you?
Sir Galileo, hiding behind a table, said urgently, “We should run.”
“No shit,” Bucky responded. He called his guards to prepare for an escape.
The three of you stayed low until you reached the garage. You all piled into a black SUV, the engine roaring to life.
Never had you imagined you’d be in a car chase. The adrenaline pumped through your veins as the SUV sped down the driveway, bullets ricocheting off the sides.
The roar of the engine filled your ears as the black SUV tore down the narrow streets. Bucky was driving with a fierce determination, weaving in and out of traffic, while Sir Galileo barked directions from the passenger seat. Behind you, the pursuing cars kept gaining, their headlights piercing through the dusk like the eyes of predators closing in on their prey. Bullets shattered the rear window, and the vehicle swerved violently as you tried to avoid the onslaught.
The situation felt hopeless. You could see the grim set of Bucky’s jaw, the way Sir Galileo’s hands gripped the dashboard. They were in danger because of you. You had to do something. You took a deep breath and made a decision.
“Leave me here,” you said, your voice trembling but resolute.
Bucky glanced at you, confusion and anger flashing across his face. “What? You've got nothing to do with this.”
“I think I do,” you whispered, feeling the weight of your bad luck pressing down on you. You reached for the door handle and flung the door open, the rush of wind pulling at you.
“You're crazy!!!” Bucky yelled, reaching for you, but you were already tumbling out of the car. The asphalt rushed up to meet you, and you hit the ground hard, rolling painfully to a stop. Your body ached all over, but you forced yourself to sit up. Through the haze of pain, you saw Bucky’s car speeding away. Relief washed over you, knowing they had a chance to escape.
“Click.”
The unmistakable sound of a gun being cocked froze you in place. You looked up to see several men emerging from the pursuing cars, their guns trained on you.
“Youre coming with us,” one of them said, his voice cold and devoid of emotion.
They hauled you to your feet, roughly searching you for weapons. You winced at the pain but felt a grim satisfaction knowing Bucky and Sir Galileo were getting away. The men shoved you towards one of their cars, and you knew your fate was now in their hands.
🍀🍀🍀🍀
The days blurred together as you sat in a dimly lit room, the only illumination coming from a bare bulb hanging from the ceiling. Your captors had bound your wrists to the chair, and the rough rope chafed against your skin. They had been relentless, taking turns to interrogate you, their questions a mix of frustration and suspicion.
“Tell us about Bucky,” one of them demanded, leaning in close, his breath reeking of tobacco and stale beer.
“I’m just a jewelry designer,” you insisted, your voice hoarse from hours of questioning.
“No. You’re more than that,” he sneered. “Barnes never invited the same person more than twice. You must mean something to him.”
You blinked in surprise. That was news to you. Bucky had always seemed so casual, so composed. You had no idea he had such strict rules.
“I told you, I’m just a designer,” you repeated, trying to maintain your composure.
‘BANG.’
Suddenly, an explosion rocked the hideout. The walls shook, and dust rained down from the ceiling. Panic spread through the room as your captors scrambled, their plans falling apart.
“Fuck! Nothing’s going our way!” one of them shouted, his voice tinged with fear.
You couldn’t help but think that maybe this was your fault, that your bad luck had followed you here and was now wreaking havoc on these gangsters. The thought made your stomach churn with guilt.
Then, you heard gunshots. The sharp cracks echoed through the building, and you instinctively covered your ears, trying to block out the chaos. Moments later, the door burst open, and you saw Bucky standing there, a fierce determination in his eyes. He quickly dispatched your captors with a series of precise shots, his movements fluid and lethal.
“Fuck,” Bucky muttered, surveying the scene before his eyes locked onto you. He holstered his gun and hurried to your side, cutting the ropes that bound you.
Bucky helped you stand up, his eyes searching your face. “I still can't believe you."
“Me?” you began, trying to find the right words.
Bucky cut you off, a rare, almost gentle smile touching his lips. “You’re the only woman willing to sacrifice for me.”
He still can't believe that a girl like you, whom he only knew as a designer, was willing to sacrifice for him. Bucky has been interested in you because of your background, wondering how a good girl like you could end up working with Sir Galileo.
“It’s all…” You started, but then you felt something cold press against the side of your forehead.
'Click.'
You gasped in shock, your heart pounding as you realized Bucky was pointing a gun at you.
Bucky’s smile turned cold and frightening. “Now, dear, tell me why you said it’s all because of you before you jumped off the car.”
“Because I'm bad luck,” you whispered, your voice trembling.
“Huh?” Bucky's eyes narrowed.
“You probably think I’m insane, but I bring bad luck wherever I go,” you explained, your voice shaking.
“Hah!” Bucky's eyes widened for a moment before he burst into laughter. “Hahahaha…”
He laughed so hard that he wiped a tear from his eye. “This is getting more interesting.”
His laughter sent chills down your spine. He found it amusing, but to you, it was a curse. His grip on the gun didn’t waver as he stepped closer, his presence overpowering.
Bucky leaned in, his breath warm against your skin. “We’ll get along just fine,” he said, his voice a low, dangerous whisper.

Plotbunny Saturday - runaway bride Lothíriel!
Last night, I was reading over chapter 1 of The Golden Hall, and I remembered that Lothíriel had briefly considered running away, before opting for a more... ehm, permanent solution.
Well, I got to thinking, what if Lothíriel did run away from Meduseld? As a result, the following AU of The Golden Hall was born, and now I need write this off me...
(tagging the usual crew: @konartiste @from-the-coffee-shop-in-edoras @emmanuellececchi @dilettantefeminist @celeluwhenfics - anyone else wish to be appraised of my unhinged plotbunnies, headcanons, drabbles, sneak peeks and the like?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright, so, we have the same general premise as in The Golden Hall: Lothíriel is trapped in a hastily arranged marriage to a stranger who was very keen on her, she's having panic attacks, and her new home is scary and shockingly different from everything she's used to. Her family won't listen to her, and she doesn't have anyone else she can turn to, so she makes a desperate plan to escape: during a feast when everyone is busy getting drunk, she drugs the guards with her panic attack potion (probably something like valerian), bribes a stableboy with a piece of jewelry, takes a horse, and makes a run for it.
She makes it pretty far, but eventually her horse goes lame, and she is forced to abandon it and walk. She gets caught in a rainstorm, falls, and twists her ankle, and is forced to beg for shelter from a smalltime nobleman's family -- they're really not too different from wealthy farmers, the only notable distinction being that they're leaders in their local community, can bear arms, and are obligated to answer the king's call during a muster. Let's call them Lord Baldric, his wife Elfgifu (because that is an awesome name and I've been itching to use it), and their two young children.
At any rate, Baldric and his family take Lothíriel in, and succor her for a few days. They believe her story that she is a traveling Gondorean noblewoman whose retinue was lost in an orc ambush, and that she's trying to get home. They do not realize that she's the queen, because in the absence of modern communications, most people would not actually know what the queen looks like, except for a general, likely fifth-hand description.
All is well for a few days, but then there is word from the nearby town that the king's éored is nigh, and they are looking for somebody -- or something. Eventually, there is news that they are searching for the queen, who has gone missing.
Lothíriel's hosts quickly put two and two together, but they decide to talk to Lothíriel first, and get her side of the story.
They approach her for a talk, and she does not deny their suspicions. She apologizes for lying, and tells them all about her unwilling marriage, her struggle to adapt to a new land and its strange customs, her homesickness, the fact that nobody would listen to her. The family conference, and decide that they will hide Lothíriel, and then assist her in getting to Gondor.
Eventually, the king's guard arrives at Baldric's family homestead, and Lothíriel is in her hiding place, while the family is fully ready to lie on her behalf. Lothíriel has a crisis of conscience, and decides she does not want them to commit treason for her sake. She emerges as they're talking to the men, announces herself, but says that she will not go without fighting within an inch of her life, and the men would then have to answer for harming their new queen.
The king's guard conference, and after some back and forth -- "Come on, we can take her, she's an unarmed woman" -- "Yes, but not just any woman, she's the queen!" -- they decide to leave, and take an oath from Baldric, his family, and Lothíriel that she would not leave their estate, and if she did despite the family's best efforts, then they would be duty bound to assist in searching for her.
A few more days pass, and Lothíriel begins to actually enjoy her new situation -- the fresh mountain air, the clean river running through the estate, the fresh, simple food, the chance to rise early, and contribute to the good, honest work on the farm -- though at first everyone insists that there is no need, and that she should rest.
Eventually, she wonders if she might stay and simply live as a member of Baldric's family, but then Éomer King himself arrives, and to everyone's surprise, he begs forgiveness for everything that happened. He offers Lothíriel an opportunity to go back to Gondor, but also asks her to give him another chance -- she can continue to live on Baldric's farm, and the two of them can have a proper courtship, allowing him to show her that he loves her.
At first, Lothíriel is incensed, and wants to send him away, but after a heart to heart talk to Elfgifu, she agrees to a second courtship.
In the months that follow, Éomer King visits her every chance he gets, and they spend a good deal of time alone together: riding, picnicking, him teaching her to use a sword, talking and telling stories about each other's losses and triumphs. At one point, there is a storm, and he cannot leave as he intended, which means that they end up in an "only one bed" situation. On that night, Lothíriel discovers that the king has nightmares, which ends up fostering further closeness, and eventually, on one of his visits, they make love, and there is an early morning scene where Éomer finds Lothíriel mucking about in the river being Truly Happy, and he joins her in splashing about. (Cue wet linen shirt scene, and him carrying her back into the house completely drenched!)
Eventually, Lothíriel discovers that she is pregnant as a result of their closeness, and informs Éomer, stating that this might be a good occasion to move back to Meduseld.
Éomer agrees, but tells her that he must first get the blessing of her adopted guardians, Elfgifu and Baldric. Cue a hilarious but heartfelt scene where Éomer plays the guy who's like 'I'm sorry I impregnated your daughter and I am going to do the right thing, but by the way, I really do love her to Aman and back and if any harm comes to her I will kill everyone and then myself."
What do you think? Sweet? Should I perhaps write this someday?

"A trove of precious jewelry from Cambodia’s past has been repatriated after surfacing in London.
Totaling 77 artifacts from the medieval kingdom of Angkor, they are believed to have been trafficked from the country during the tyranny of the Khmer Rouge and the civil wars that plagued the country during the 20th century.
Angkor was one of the greatest powers in the East between the 9th and 14th centuries. Their theocratic capital of Angkor Wat is considered one of the 7 Wonders of the Medieval World, and today is still the largest religious complex on Earth.
The treasures date squarely to this period of flourishing and some of the crowns are believed to have sat on royal brows. They include items “such as gold and other precious metal pieces from the Pre-Angkorian and Angkorian period including crowns, necklaces, bracelets, belts, earrings, and amulets,” the Cambodian Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts said in a statement.
The items came from the estate of recently-late serial art trafficker Douglas Latchford, who for many years was considered an expert antiquities appraiser, but was later discovered to have worked alongside the Communist Khmer Rouge to traffic hundreds of artifacts from the country.
Now, many of the nation’s historical treasures are returning, and this trove is just the most recent tranche.
Last year, US citizens or institutions returned either voluntarily or by court order, 30 items sold by Latchford, including a 10th-century sculpture of the Hindu god Skanda atop a peacock considered a “masterpiece.”
The year before that, the estate of Latchford, who died in 2020 before he could be convicted of antiquities trafficking, sent back five bronze and sandstone sculptures to Cambodia."
-via Good News Network, 2/22/23
--
Bonus Info:
"The return of the items followed a September 2020 agreement with Latchford's family under which all Cambodian artifacts in their possession would be returned to Cambodia. Other stone and bronze artifacts were returned in September 2021."

A Bride for the Prince (Chapter 3 - Preparations)
[Prologue] // [Chapter 2 of 9] // [Chapter 3 of 9 - you are here!] // [Chapter 4 of 9] – (FFN) (AO3)
Part of the @ninjago-fairy-tale-au!
Summary:
Once upon a time, there lived a faithful and hardworking girl named Pixal Borg, who worked every day to satisfy her demanding stepmother. For years, she cleaned and cooked, giving no argument, until the day came when she met the prince. A Pixane Cinderella retelling.
Chapter summary:
The ladies of the Borg estate prepare to attend the festival, and Pixal gets creative.
As the king's festival drew closer to hand, the Borg household was thrown into a flurry of excitement and activity, such that there was no rest for anyone, especially Pixal.
Amaryllis was swept up in the excitement of the coming days. She sent for the best tailors, cobblers, jewelry makers, and more, so they might flatter her daughters with their work. Over the days, each came in his or her own turn to their estate, laden with tools and materials. They practiced their crafts with ease, creating beautiful gowns for Begonia and Columbine, which matched gorgeous new shoes and lovely jewelry. Bedecked in beautiful fabrics and jewels in such number, the two of them paraded around with aloofness, as if they were simply "nice." To Pixal in particular, they flaunted all their finery, in hopes of making her envious.
Amaryllis encouraged her daughters to ask after Prince Zane as if they were royalty, using the prestige of the Borg name to make themselves worthy candidates of his affection. One of her daughters was bound to catch the prince's eye eventually, and she would spare no expense in achieving such a goal, if only to raise one of them to royalty.
As they prepared and pranced, Pixal went about her days with little concern for them, doing her best to ignore their antics as tamp down any envy. However, she too was thrown into a flurry of work, and the excitement seized her too. The work they created in their excitement was such that her books were soon to collect dust, and she was displeased with such a possibility, but her mind wandered to possible ways to enjoy the festival herself. With such a thought in mind, she worked as quickly as she could, using her ever-growing vocabulary of spells to help her whenever her family could not see her. Her clip in particular was used copiously, to do immense amounts of laundry and clean rooms in half the time it would have taken her.
Eventually, however, the excitement got the better of Pixal as well, and she began to dream about the festival in greater amound. Only a couple of days away, it was to be a three-day affair of enormous proportion, only one hour's travel from the Borg estate. It was rumored that there would be games and shopping, and that the prince himself would be participating in each day's jousting tournament. He would take the favor of some lady and parade it high, so all the kingdom might see that he had taken interest in a woman to be his princess. Pixal thought it sounded almost foolish, as the prince would likely take a favour from every possible candidate, but nevertheless her heart beat quickly at the thought.
The day before the first festival day, Pixal built up her courage and sought out Amaryllis in the estate's gardens.
"Stepmother?" she asked.
At the sound of her voice, Amaryllis turned to her and frowned in distaste. "What is it, Pixal? Why are you disturbing me?"
"I have a request." Pixal folded her hands and nestled them in the folds of her skirt, intent on appearing meek. "I would like to go to the festival with you."
Her stepmother looked her up and down, appraising and disdainful. "You want to go to the festival. Do you even have anything to wear?"
"I do."
"It is not rags, is it? You must try to have a little dignity, Pixal."
"I do not only wear rags!" Pixal protested. "I have a dress to wear."
Her stepmother looked unimpressed. "Very well, then. If you are to go to the festival with us, you must prove that you deserve to attend. I will not have some dirty servant girl parading the Borg name through the mud."
"How must I do that?" Pixal asked, trepidation making her stomach churn.
"As you go about your day, you must do it without being touched by a single speck of dust. No member of my household may embarrass me with a poor appearance. If you are at all dirty, you may not attend with us. Go, clean yourself up. If you cannot do that, you cannot go."
Pixal agreed and left her stepmother's presence quickly. When she could, she washed herself carefully, scouring the dirt from her fingernails and the dust from her hair. Then she donned her cleanest day dress and continued with her day. Unfortunately, as she worked, she encountered her sisters.
"Pixal, there you are! I need my necklace polished," Begonia simpered. "It has corroded, see? You must use your strongest, blackest polish." She put the dirty necklace into Pixal's hand.
"Pixal the maid makes herself known! What an opportune time," Columbine crowed. "I need you to clean my bedroom. It's filthy!" She shoved a dusty, dirty shift into Pixal's other hand.
Pixal sighed. "I cannot do these things today. I need to stay clean, or Stepmother will not bring me with to the festival."
"That sounds like a problem for you to handle," Columbine said.
"We could always tell Mother that you aren't doing any work at all," Begonia threatened.
"What would she think if she heard that? So selfish."
"You had better do it!"
Pixal sighed again, wishing to every power above that she was not put in this situation, but unable to protest. "Very well..."
So she went and did as they had told her. Her hands became blackened with polish, and she could not clean it away from under her fingernails. As she cleaned, she became covered in dust, which she was unable to completely sweep away. The evening approached, and she only grew ever dirtier, having no time to clean herself up before the next task that was thrown upon her by her stepsisters. Her hope diminished every hour, but finally she found a time to slip away in private, right before her stepmother was to inspect her.
In the washroom, Pixal took out her hairclip. She had saved its uses that day, in hopes that she could do this. She took a deep breath. "Salva me in opere… make me as clean as snow."
Within moments, the clip began to glow, and an apparition came forth from it. It cleaned her and her clothing, and when it was done, one would think she was royalty if not for her plain dress and hair. She examined herself in the looking glass and smiled. Surely her mother could not find fault in her magically clean looks. Though Amaryllis hated her, she could not deny her this.
When Amaryllis saw Pixal, she frowned deeply, and for a moment, Pixal thought she had done it. Amaryllis examined Pixal very closely, but found nothing, searching even the smallest things. When she was done, she shook her head. "I see that you were very careful. You are perfectly clean. However, since you are, you were no doubt also lazy, to be so untouched. A lazy girl cannot come with us to the festival– I would be shamed!"
Pixal stared at her in shock. "I was not lazy, Stepmother! I polished Begonia's necklace and I cleaned Columbine's room, plus all my usual chores! I did everything asked of me!"
"None of Begonia's necklaces needed polishing, Pixal. Even if you did, your hands would have been blackened! I see no polish on you." Amaryllis glared at her. "Furthermore, Columbine's room is always clean. If you had been told to clean it, would you not be covered in dust? You must not have done that either."
Pixal fumbled for an explanation. "I scrubbed my hands and changed my clothes, Stepmother. I was very careful!"
Her stepmother looked at her in unmasked exasperation. "I'm sure you did. You will not be coming with us. This conversation is over."
-----
The next morning, Amaryllis, Begonia, and Columbine all left for the festival. Each was decked in finery– lovely dresses, jewelry, and shoes, each brand new. They laughed as they prepared, and the two sisters twirled and flounced their skirts, sure that they would catch some noble eye, if not the prince himself, and marry into riches and luxury. Both came to Pixal in turn and taunted her before piling into their carriage, jeering.
"It's such a shame you can't join us, Pixal. You could have met the prince!"
"Really, it truly is. I can't imagine how dreadfully boring it will be here, home alone."
"Meanwhile, we will be meeting Prince Zane and sweeping him off his feet."
"More like he will be sweeping me off mine!"
"He won't pay attention to you! I'll be his favorite!"
Still bickering, Begonia and Columbine climbed into the carriage. Amaryllis hung back for a moment, and Pixal's skin crawled. "Perhaps if you were more industrious, you could come," Amaryllis said lowly, and then she entered. Then they were off, and Pixal was left alone at the estate.
Pixal sighed as she watched them go. Deep in her heart, she knew there was no way they would have let her come, anyway. She would not be able to go with their knowledge or approval...however, she knew a way she might go to the festival without them. If she did, she might have some fun; she would be free for a day, would she not? With that dream in mind, she went back to her basement room.
When she arrived, she pried open the loose wall board and took out her purple dress and shoes, which she had received when her father gave her the clip. She donned them carefully, gingerly clasping the bodice around her stays. Just as she had hoped, they still fit her perfectly, and were in the same condition she had received them. Happily, she spun around, watching the skirt twirl out.
With her first difficulty solved, Pixal began to ponder the second. Her family would not notice if she did not clean for one day, but she had to be able to leave, or it was pointless. Thus, she needed a solution. As she pondered her situation, she wandered the estate. She passed by the road outside, and then an idea struck her.
Ten minutes later, with a spell tome in her hand, Pixal came back to the road. She opened the tome to a specific page, and then pulled some kitchen herbs from her pocket. She placed them on the ground and began to recite a spell from her book, carefully checking the pronunciation before she did so. "Ut me ad requireris..."
Immediately, the herbs began to smoke green and blue, creating a plume that rose high into the sky. It sparkled with magical energy, glowing slightly. It seemed as if all else around it became slightly darker, but it did not trouble her. With a deep breath, Pixal closed her tome, pocketed the extra herbs, and walked into the column of smoke.
-----
When Pixal next opened her eyes, the smoke was gone. She stood in a small clearing, behind some sort of stall. She took a few steps forward and looked around. Sure enough, she was at the festival! Her spell had worked!
She ran back to behind the stall and put the cloth over her book, nestling it in a little hollow with some more herbs. If it stayed hidden all day, she would be able to return easily. The festival was waiting for her, and she would spend all day, knowing her family would not return until long after nightfall.
Having set her course of action, Pixal turned to face the road. Her family may have denied her, but Pixal would be attending the festival despite them. For the first time in a very long time, she would have some time for fun on her own– freedom was hers for the day, and she could do whatever she wished, if she only knew where to start.
-----
Ut me ad requireris = "Take me to the festival."

Top Reasons to Get an Estate Jewelry Appraisal
Estate jewelry holds not only sentimental value but also potential financial worth. Whether inherited or collected over time, these pieces often carry historical, artistic, and monetary significance. Getting a professional appraisal for estate jewelry is essential for understanding its true value, which can be beneficial in various situations. Here are the top reasons why you should consider having your estate jewelry appraised.
1. Insurance Purposes
One of the primary reasons to have estate jewelry appraised is for insurance. In the event of theft, loss, or damage, an appraisal allows you to provide your insurance company with the necessary documentation to replace or repair the piece at its current market value. Without an accurate appraisal, you may risk being underinsured, leading to potential financial loss if something happens to your jewelry. A professional appraisal includes a detailed description of the piece, its materials, and its estimated value, ensuring your insurance policy accurately reflects the worth of your items.
2. Resale and Market Value Assessment
If you’re considering selling your estate jewelry, an appraisal can provide a clear understanding of its current market value. Jewelry markets fluctuate, and items may gain or lose value over time based on demand, fashion trends, and rarity. A qualified appraiser will assess the piece’s condition, materials, craftsmanship, and historical significance to determine its market value. Knowing the appraised value can help you set a fair price, whether you’re selling through a private buyer, an auction house, or a jewelry retailer.
3. Family Inheritance and Estate Planning
Estate jewelry is often passed down through generations, and having an appraisal can simplify inheritance and estate planning. Knowing the value of each piece allows you to divide assets fairly among heirs and prevent potential disputes. An appraisal provides a clear, unbiased valuation that can be useful for estate planning attorneys and financial advisors, ensuring a smooth transfer of assets. Additionally, if heirs wish to keep specific pieces, they’ll have an accurate valuation for managing any related financial or tax implications.
4. Insurance Claim Substantiation
In cases where estate jewelry has already been damaged or lost, having a recent appraisal can help substantiate an insurance claim. Without documentation of the jewelry’s value, it can be difficult to receive fair compensation. A reputable appraisal is a trusted source for proving the value of your piece, providing details such as weight, materials, quality, and any distinguishing features. This documentation can expedite the claims process and help ensure that you receive appropriate compensation based on the jewelry’s worth.
5. Tax and Legal Purposes
Estate jewelry appraisals are often necessary for tax and legal purposes, particularly in cases of inheritance or estate settlement. Jewelry items left to heirs or donated as charitable gifts may require a documented appraisal to meet tax requirements. In some instances, appraisals are necessary to meet the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) guidelines for property valuation. Having a certified appraisal ensures compliance with these regulations, providing clarity and transparency in legal and tax matters.
Conclusion
Getting an estate jewelry appraisal offers numerous benefits, from protecting your investment through insurance to understanding its historical significance and market value. By having your estate jewelry professionally appraised, you ensure that its worth is documented, preserved, and well-understood. Whether for financial, legal, or personal reasons, an appraisal is a valuable step toward managing and safeguarding the unique treasures in your collection.

The Probate Process Timeline: How a Probate Attorney Ensures Timely Administration
When a loved one passes away, the process of settling their estate can feel overwhelming. Probate, the legal process of administering an estate, ensures that assets are distributed according to the deceased’s wishes or the law, and any debts or taxes are settled.
While probate can seem like a daunting task, a probate attorney plays a crucial role in helping navigate this process smoothly and efficiently. Understanding the probate process timeline and how a probate attorney ensures timely administration is essential for anyone responsible for managing an estate.
Tumblr media
This article will break down the probate process step by step, highlighting the role of a probate attorney along the way.
What is Probate?
Probate is a court-supervised procedure that involves verifying the validity of a will, if one exists, and distributing the decedent’s assets to heirs, beneficiaries, and creditors. During probate, the estate is managed by the executor or personal representative named in the will or appointed by the court. In the absence of a will, the estate is administered according to state laws of intestacy, and the court will appoint an administrator to handle the estate. The probate process ensures that all debts are paid, and assets are distributed according to the law or the wishes of the deceased.
Steps Involved in the Probate Process
1. Initiating the Probate Process
The first step in the probate process is to file the will with the probate court. If the decedent did not leave a will, the next step is to file a petition to appoint an administrator. A probate attorney assists with this initial paperwork and ensures that the court is properly notified. In some jurisdictions, the estate must also be published in a local newspaper to notify creditors of the decedent’s passing.
The probate process begins once the court appoints a personal representative (executor or administrator). A probate attorney is crucial in ensuring that this appointment is completed correctly and swiftly to avoid delays.
2. Inventorying the Estate
Once the probate process has been initiated, the personal representative must take inventory of the decedent’s assets and debts. This includes real estate, bank accounts, investments, and personal belongings, as well as any outstanding debts such as loans, credit card balances, and taxes. The personal representative must determine the value of the assets and ensure that they are properly secured.
A probate attorney ensures that the inventory process is thorough and accurate, as any missing assets or liabilities could cause complications during probate. If necessary, a probate attorney will help coordinate appraisals or valuations of certain assets, such as real estate or jewelry.
3. Paying Debts and Taxes
Before the assets can be distributed to the beneficiaries or heirs, all debts and taxes must be paid. This may include funeral expenses, medical bills, and credit card debt, as well as any income or estate taxes owed by the decedent’s estate.
A probate attorney ensures that all creditors are notified and that the estate’s debts are settled according to the law. The attorney may also assist in filing the necessary tax forms, including estate and income tax returns. In some cases, the attorney may help negotiate with creditors to reduce the estate’s liabilities.
4. Distributing the Assets
After all debts and taxes have been paid, the remaining assets are distributed to the beneficiaries according to the will or state law. If there is a valid will, the personal representative will distribute the assets as outlined in the document. In the absence of a will, the estate is distributed according to the laws of intestacy, which determine how assets are divided among surviving family members.
A probate attorney helps ensure that assets are distributed correctly, in accordance with the decedent’s wishes or the applicable laws. The attorney also provides guidance in resolving any disputes that may arise among beneficiaries, such as disagreements over the value of assets or the interpretation of the will.
5. Closing the Estate
Once all the debts have been settled, taxes have been paid, and assets have been distributed, the probate process concludes with the closing of the estate. The personal representative will file a final report with the probate court to show that all responsibilities have been completed. The court will review the report, and if everything is in order, the estate will be officially closed.
A probate attorney helps ensure that all required documentation is submitted, and the court’s requirements are met. If necessary, the attorney will assist in any additional steps needed to officially close the estate.
How Long Does the Probate Process Take?
The length of the probate process depends on several factors, including the complexity of the estate, the size of the estate, and whether or not there are any disputes among heirs or creditors. In general, the probate process can take anywhere from a few months to a year or more. Some factors that can delay the process include:
Disputes over the validity of the will
Complicated asset distribution
Outstanding debts or tax issues
Contested claims by beneficiaries or creditors
A probate attorney helps to streamline the process by addressing issues promptly and ensuring that all necessary steps are completed efficiently. The attorney also acts as a mediator in case any disputes arise, helping to resolve them without causing unnecessary delays.
Why a Probate Attorney is Essential for Timely Administration
The probate process can be complex, and having an experienced probate attorney by your side is essential to ensuring that everything is handled properly and efficiently. Here are a few ways a probate attorney ensures timely administration of the estate:
1. Expert Knowledge of Probate Laws
Probate laws vary from state to state, and a probate attorney is well-versed in the laws and procedures that apply in your jurisdiction. This knowledge ensures that all necessary steps are completed correctly, avoiding unnecessary delays caused by mistakes or missed deadlines.
2. Efficient Handling of Paperwork
Probate involves a significant amount of paperwork, including petitions, inventories, tax filings, and final reports. A probate attorney can manage this paperwork efficiently, ensuring that all required documents are filed on time.
3. Managing Debts and Disputes
If there are any disputes among beneficiaries or creditors, a probate attorney can help resolve them quickly and fairly. The attorney can also handle any negotiations with creditors to reduce the estate’s liabilities, ensuring that the estate is settled in a timely manner.
4. Avoiding Probate Delays
Probate can be delayed for various reasons, including disputes, creditor claims, or tax issues. A probate attorney works to minimize these delays by addressing any issues promptly and keeping the process moving forward.
5. Closing the Estate
A probate attorney ensures that the estate is closed properly and in accordance with the law. This helps to prevent any future complications or legal issues that could arise after the estate is closed.
Common FAQs About the Probate Process
Q: How long does probate take?
The probate process can take several months to a year or more, depending on the complexity of the estate and any issues that arise.
Q: Do I need a probate attorney?
While it is possible to handle probate without an attorney, having an experienced probate attorney can make the process smoother and help avoid delays or mistakes.
Q: Can I skip probate?
In some cases, it may be possible to avoid probate by using certain estate planning tools, such as trusts or joint ownership. Consult with a probate attorney to explore your options.
Q: What if there is no will?
If there is no will, the estate will be distributed according to state laws of intestacy, and the court will appoint an administrator to manage the estate.
Q: Can beneficiaries dispute the will?
Yes, beneficiaries can contest the validity of a will, which can delay the probate process. A probate attorney can help resolve disputes and ensure that the estate is administered correctly.
Conclusion
The probate attorney is an essential part of settling an estate after a loved one’s passing. While the timeline can vary depending on several factors, hiring a probate attorney ensures that the process is handled efficiently, with all legal requirements met. From filing the will to distributing assets and paying taxes, a probate attorney helps manage the complexities of probate, providing peace of mind for the executor and beneficiaries alike. Whether you are the executor or a beneficiary, working with a probate attorney ensures that the estate is administered in a timely and legally sound manner.
