this is such a fantastic post about lycaons background with mockingbird and his agent story that I didn't want to derail but I do have my own ideas on what his experience with mockingbird might be and his vampire friends background
have you heard the tale of gamelyn? it goes roughly like this: a wealthy man's youngest son is left to the care of his wicked older brother that wants to cheat him out of his inheritance. The father is on his deathbed when he gets his youngest son and neighbors as witness to him dividing his lands up between his children before his death.
The neighbors leave, he dies, and gamelyn is at the mercy of his older brother. He grows up in his brother's hall, his share of their fathers lands held in trust by his brother as well. Except he's let his youngest brothers share of the land fall to ruin, he abuses gamelyn, they fight horribly over gamelyns ruined portion of the inheritance.
In the final scene of lycaon and the vampire we can infer the vampire is possibly wealthy himself at this point
Ornate, large gold trimmed window, the presumably high ceilings of the office he stands in having carved woodwork, even his clothing suggests by this time lycaons former partner has done quite well for himself. That could be from funds they acquired through their mockingbird "work" or because he has a similar background to the story of gamelyn.
The vampire is incredibly theatric, we see him making young lycaon recite an oath in very flowery language and we see his influence on lycaon as an adult despite their estrangement, from his accent to his strict adherence to his role as a dutiful butler. Wealthy people love theatrics and dramatics, and if the vampire is a sort of gamelyn inspired figure, background wise, it would make sense he would found a "steal from the rich give to the poor" sort of criminal organization. And perhaps a younger lycaon simply wasn't aware of the depth of his friends entanglement with wealth and inheritance at that point, maybe meeting after the vampire had already been cast out by his wealthy family, his inheritance usurped.
He tells lycaon family is a curse and a burden, essentially. It would make sense for him to have that viewpoint if he is inspired by the story of gamelyn to some degree, being betrayed by his family for status/material wealth and it might make him resentful of the wealthy as a class, making them his prime target. And perhaps it was a sort of betrayal to lycaon, who believed the organization had more upstanding roots in a real desire to take from those who have an excess and give it to those who do not, if he found out about this part of his friend and how deeply that would have impacted the creation of their organization. Maybe lycaon became extremely disillusioned with it all, realizing it was not what it presented itself to be and was truly a tool for personal revenge.
The final nail in the coffin so to speak may have been whatever happened to cause the loss of his left eye and his legs at the knee. If he lost those in service to mockingbird, his friend that was maybe not entirely truthful about his real motivations, it could have been the final straw for lycaon. unable to remain as loyal as he promised when confronted with the fact that he had suffered substantial losses in service to someone who is ultimately selfish and self serving, not who he believed he was. due to how lycaon stresses loyalty in himself to a "master" I believe it would take an extremely serious event like that to trigger someone like him into making the choice to abandon the object of his loyalty.
but that's just my silly lil ramblings and it's just as possible im wrong about all that but it is fun to think about
#von lycaon#zzz#zenless zone zero spoilers#von lycaon spoilers#zzzero#i do pretty strongly suspect tho that it is something along those lines

NURISTAN: SHEDDING LIGHT ON AN INACCESSIBLE CRAFT
HIDDEN IN THE EASTERN MOUNTAINS OF AFGHANISTAN, NURISTANI WOODCARVERS HAVE PERFECTED THEIR CRAFT OVER THE PAST THOUSAND YEARS, ADORNING HOUSES AND MOSQUES WITH CAREFULLY CARVED PATTERNS WHICH MEANINGS HAVE NOW MOSTLY BEEN LOST
Embedded in Afghanistan’s eastern mountains, the region of Kafiristan (“Land of the Infidels”) was long an isolated society. Cut off from the world courtesy of their deep mountain gorges and fierce warriors, their local religion was supplanted by Islam at the end of the 19th century ( renamed ‘Nuristan’, or “Land of Light”), over a millennium after the neighbouring regions. Their unique style of woodcarving, a centuries-old, integral component of their culture, is in dire need of safeguarding lest it be lost forever.
In its efforts to preserve Afghanistan’s intangible cultural heritage, Turquoise Mountain is being supported by the British Council’s Cultural Protection Fund to document and support Afghan crafts such as Nuristani woodcarving. In accordance with the guidelines set out by UNESCO’s 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, there is a pressing need to carry out background research on the craft prior to the more detailed inventory, systematically exploring Nuristan’s woodcarving history, symbolism and social meaning in collaboration with the National Archives of Afghanistan, the Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University, and other cultural institutions.
Woodcarving played an integral role in the delineation of Nuristan’s strictly hierarchical, class-based society. The producers of the craft came from the ‘Bari’, a class of people not regarded as members of society. As well as being woodworkers, the ‘Bari’ were more generally labourers, involved in building bridges and water mills, or acting as stone carvers and potters. Deemed to be impure and racially separate from the rest of society, the ‘Bari’ were, prior to the region’s Islamization, treated as slaves. As a result there is no genealogical record of the exceptionally skilled woodcarvers who transmitted the knowledge from master (ustad) to student (shagerd), generation after generation.
In the past Nuristani woodcarving held significant symbolic meaning and essentially acted as a tool of social signaling to identify acts of greatness, specifically hunting and feast-giving. The ‘Atrozhen’, or class of freemen, who made up about 90% of society, were allowed to decorate - or, rather, have the lower class ‘Bari’ decorate - their houses with the symbols. However, within the ‘Atrozhen’ the privilege was tightly controlled. A community council of Big Men effectively held the exclusive privilege of controlling social movement. The social positions and titles that people were given were obtained only upon this council’s approval.

Woodworking projects are both creative and rewarding but require careful planning to achieve the best results. Whether you're crafting a simple shelf or a complex piece of furniture, having a step-by-step plan is crucial. Not only does this help avoid costly mistakes, but it also ensures that the finished product meets your expectations. In this guide, we’ll explore the essential steps for planning, preparing, and executing a successful woodworking project.
Step 1: Defining the Project Requirements
Before you start any woodworking project, the first step is to decide exactly what you’re aiming to build. Consider questions like:
What is the primary purpose of this project?
How much weight or capacity will it need to hold?
What design style will best suit the intended space?
Understanding these requirements allows you to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing piece tailored to its purpose.
Step 2: The Importance of Planning in Woodworking
Once you know what you want to build, it’s time to dive into the planning phase. Planning involves assessing three critical factors:
Time: Determine how much time you can realistically dedicate to this project.
Budget: Establish a budget for materials and tools, keeping in mind quality and longevity.
Resources: Check what materials and tools you already have, which can help cut costs.
This planning step is essential to set clear, achievable goals for your woodworking project.
Step 3: Writing Down Requirements and Specifications
Next, make a detailed list of your project’s requirements and specifications. For example:
The types of wood and hardware you’ll need
Exact dimensions for every piece of the project
A checklist of specific features or functions it must serve
Being specific in your requirements helps you avoid last-minute changes or unexpected problems during the building process.
Step 4: Creating Sketches and Detailed Plans
Sketching is a crucial part of visualizing your project. Draw a clear plan, even if it’s a rough sketch. Include measurements and part specifications, as these will guide you during construction. This stage is like a blueprint that brings your idea into a structured format.
Step 5: Choosing the Right Materials
The type of wood you select can significantly impact the project’s durability, appearance, and cost. Consider:
Softwoods: Ideal for lightweight or decorative projects.
Hardwoods: Durable and great for furniture meant to last.
Balance the quality of materials with your budget to ensure you’re getting the best value without compromising on the outcome.
Step 6: Tools Needed for Woodworking Projects
Depending on your project’s complexity, you may require various tools, from simple hand tools to more advanced power tools. Here’s a quick guide:
Essential Tools: Hammer, saw, chisel, measuring tape, and drill.
Advanced Tools: Power saw, router, planer, or jointer.
If possible, make plans that allow you to use the tools you already own to keep costs down.
Step 7: Tool Maintenance and Preparation
Good tool maintenance is vital for precise work. Before starting, check that each tool is in top condition. Sharpen dull blades, lubricate moving parts, and replace any worn or damaged pieces. Working with well-maintained tools ensures smoother cuts and better overall results.
Step 8: Executing the Woodworking Project
Now comes the most exciting part: execution! Follow your plan closely, making sure each measurement aligns with your blueprint. Avoid straying from your plan, as small changes can affect the entire structure.
Step 9: Adding a Proper Finish to Your Woodwork
A good finish not only enhances the wood’s appearance but also protects it. Finishes come in various types:
Stains: Add color while preserving the wood grain.
Varnishes: Provide a glossy finish and additional protection.
Choose a finish that complements your piece, as the right finish can elevate the look of your woodworking project.
Step 10: Final Assembly and Inspection
Once you’ve completed the main construction, it’s time for final assembly. Inspect each joint and fastener to ensure everything is secure. Look for imperfections or sharp edges and sand them down for a smooth finish.
Conclusion
Woodworking projects can be incredibly rewarding when done right. By following these steps, from defining requirements to adding the final finish, you’ll create pieces that are both functional and beautiful. Don’t be afraid to start small, as each project will help you gain skills and confidence.

can't sleep so I've been messing with a color palette to use as a guide for furnishing+decorating my new room. The deep brown matches the woodwork & I will try to keep any wood furniture close in color. the off-white matches the drywall and the cream blanket I'm going to be keeping on the bed, the flat white accounts for the busts+ceramics that I have & more i plan on getting, looking for a black metal bed frame which resembles that of a classic hospital/military cot, the deep red matches this old faded marlboro shopping basket I've got that I'm going to be keeping books in. The basket is kinda what I'm basing the whole palette on... so essentially my room will be marlboro colored-coded. Which maybe sounds weird but I'm convinced it's going to come out beautifully. I think the dim yellowish lightbulbs in the ceiling fan will make the palette warmer, which could either look ugly, or romantic...
....we'll see. I don't really want to replace them with harsh white lights, i guess I could look for a middle ground. The TV taxidermy display case will either be lined with deep red faux velvet with white lighting on the inside, or it will be sort of a terrarium, but with red LEDs to cancel out the green of the moss & plants(though i'm also considering doing a desert style terrarium with sandstone, stripped wood and tumbleweed rather than vibrant plants and moss, so I wouldn't have to worry as much about the color of the lighting.) I was thinking of having preserved wheat or straw in a vase, to match the off-white, maybe some woven twig decorations to match the brown. I want to hang up some old tools, (hammer & sickle together, hatchet, handsaw, pitchfork. A field scythe would be awesome) which could match the black and brown. I'm taking inspiration from old infirmaries and farmhouses, but also from 80s suburban & soviet interiors.

PLEASE explain carpentry and woodworking im curious to hear about it from someone who actually works in it
GLADLY.
Long post ahead
Ok, first I feel like I should probably explain the differences in woodworking vs carpentry.
First up, Carpentry!
Carpentry is possibly one of the oldest trade jobs in our world. After all, wood is one of the oldest and most frequently used building materials in history. Carpentry has existed ever since the first wooden house was built. It is concerned with primarily wood construction. That means dealing with building houses, creating floor plans, installing roofing, ect. It also deals with building bridges, offices, ect ect.
There's a lot of mathematics that go into Carpentry. A good carpenter should be able to accurately take measurements and build the right about of supplies to install them.
An example would be when you're flooring a house, a carpenter will take dimensions of your house and use that to figure out how much wood you'll need to install the floors.
It requires precise dimensions to find the number of materials you'll need and how to best utilize them. This takes alot of mathematical prowess, dexterity, and ingenuity. Making errors could be catastrophic, especially if you're working on vital projects like bridges.
There is no room for error when it comes to carpentry. An error could mean the entire bridge falls apart! Carpentry works mostly with construction work, and, once mixed with crafts like masonry and metalworking, to create great structures.
Quick summary
- Involves shaping wood into materials that are meant to go towards construction work
- Properly calculating the amount of wooden material needed to complete a project
- Carefully following blueprints to build houses, rooms, bridges, and more
- Inspecting damaged wooden structures and buy the ones who have the resources and expertise to fix them
- The projects associated with carpentry include flooring, walls, windows, doors, insulation, and more.
Woodworking
Woodworking might be as old as carpentry. Possibly even older! The craft has existed since mankind created its first wooden objects. It was often associated with holiness for a completely different reason from carpentry.
Ancient civilizations would transform pieces of wood into idols for worship. As such, it was a commendable art even back in the day. However, with the help of modern technology, the field of woodworking has taken completely new heights.
While basic mathematics is still important when it comes to woodworking, it's nowhere near as vital as it is in carpentry. Instead, it focuses on a completely different kind of expertise. The use of machines.
A good modern woodworker is versed in the use of a plethora of machinery, whether it be shapers, routers, ect. There are a ton of machines that assist in woodworking.
Without the use of machinery, it would be impossible to create such intricate designs. Besides, it takes a lot of time, effort, and a huge degree of creativity. Yes, while math skills are still important, most priority shifts over to the artisans creativity. The more creative you are, the more impressive crafts you can make.
Essentially, woodworking is a craft that transformation wood to create products like cabinets, shelves, panels, beds, ect. Emphasis is placed on the design. There is practically no limit to the things woodworking can produce. As a result, different types exist which specialize in different methods of the craft.
Types of Woodworking.
- Carving : Involves carving the wood into a variety of creations with specialized knives or other tools.
- Furniture making : It's in the name. In this specialization, you take wood and transform it into the variety of different furniture. Including chairs, tables, beds, cabinets, ect.
- Turning : There are a plethora of gorgeous designs you can come up with by using a lathe. That is exactly what a turning involves.
- Luthing : You probably noticed most classical musical instruments are made of wood. Luthing is responsible for that. It's what creates and repairs the wooden instruments.
A quick summary
- The focus lies on artistry and creativity to form new objects
- Woodworking creates a plethora of products such as cabinets, shelves, tables, chairs, wooden showpiece, instruments, and more.
- There's extensive knowledge needed when it comes to operating a variety of woodworking machinery.
- Operations aren't enough, maintenance knowledge is equally as vital
- It usually takes place within a factory of a workshop
- Sanding and finishing projects is an essential part of woodworking.
Conclusion
At its core, woodworking is an art that creates products, while carpentry is normally construction work.

Do whitney or joan have any favorite books?
Taking this opportunity to say, I know for a fact Joan would become obsessed with a book like House of Leaves.
She has her specific favorite sci-fi anthologies and epic fantasy series she recommends often. Joan prefers fictional worlds.
And when Whitney isn’t indulging in her grandparents bookshelf (a lot of trashy romance dramas in there…) she returns to the non-fiction sections of the library.
Whitney’s favorites books are going to be centered around her selective interests or related to them. Books like The Essential Woodworker: Skills, Tools and Methods would excite her.

A Primer on the Stone Age Technology of Flint Knapping
Flint knapping is an ancient craft that involves creating stone arrowheads and projectiles. The projectiles served as essential weapons for hunting, warfare, and survival.
The technique involves precisely removing the thin layers of stone to shape and sharpen it into a functional tool. Humans have passed down the meticulous process through generations since the Stone Age. Some believe that various cultures developed independent techniques worldwide. Archaeologists suggest that the skill did not originate in a single area and then spread. Instead, diverse cultures learned and applied it separately.
Archeological evidence points to the use of rock and stone as materials for the earliest tools millions of years ago; the oldest stone dates back more than 60,000 years. In North America, some recovered spearheads date back at least 15,000 years. Before cultures adopted metallurgical techniques or in societies that didn't develop metalworking, flint knapping served as the predominant method for fashioning tools and weapons. Excavations have unearthed numerous flint-knapped stone artifacts, showing that it's easier to distinguish flint-knapped stones such as arrowheads than those from natural rocks.
The stone used for flint knapping mattered since every type did not provide a suitable fit, and some became common. Alongside flint, obsidian was a popular choice, as were quartz, chert, jasper, and chalcedony. The stones possess characteristics ideal for crafting tools and weapons and the necessary durability to withstand the demands of hunting and battles. While dense and hard, the rocks have the unique quality of fracturing in a clamshell or rounded conchoidal pattern, unlike other stones that break in linear or jagged manners when struck. The precision in fracture patterns gave early humans control over shaping the stones.
The predictable fracture patterns observed in flint, obsidian, and similar rocks made them particularly suitable for toolmaking using flint knapping techniques. Ancient humans likely learned through observation during natural events like landslides or earthquakes and through experimentation by striking rocks.
Accomplished flint knappers relied on hard and soft hammers to craft stone tools. Rocks such as granite, basalt, quartz, or other metamorphic and igneous material harder than flint would serve as a hard hammer. For more intricate work, flint knappers utilized soft hammers made from materials other than rock, such as bone, antlers, or sturdy wood. Depending on the intended tool or weapon, a flint knapper might need to refine a sharp edge before removing a flake to avoid chipping off too large a piece. To accomplish this, they would employ another stone, such as limestone or sandstone, to smooth the flint, like a woodworker uses sandpaper.
Flint knapping methods differed based on the task, cultural practices, the artisan's style, and materials. The process started by identifying a suitable stone, a core, which required altering into a flatter object resembling the intended final product. Initially, a hard hammer helped chip off parts of the original rock, gradually shaping the core, requiring precision over brute force. The knapper had to strategically hit the core's edge with the hard hammer to remove flakes.
Holding the core in one hand and the hard hammer in the other, the knapper meticulously struck the core to shape it from different sides and angles. After achieving the rough, the knapper shifted to a soft hammer, employing indirect percussion flaking for refinement. The knapper flaked off thin, clamshell-shaped layers by applying pressure to the chipped edge. Every strike to the core reduced its size, shaping it into a knife, hatchet, arrowhead, or digging tool.
Several ancient civilizations discovered that heating stones facilitated knapping. Gradually heating stones over a fire altered their texture, smoothing the surface and making them less grainy. Burying the heated rocks in hot sand transformed the composition and texture, creating smaller, sharper flakes for crafting more efficient tools and weapons.

Introduction
In the field of handmade workmanship, creating one-of-a-kind and personalized things is very appealing. Making your own pen with Crepe Myrtle Burl pen blanks allows you to learn about woodworking while also creating unique and visually appealing writing instruments. This guide will walk you through the steps of changing Crepe Myrtle Burl pen blanks into a beautiful and useful pen.
Understanding crepe myrtle burls:
Crepe myrtle is a gorgeous ornamental shrub with vivid blooms, but woodworkers are most interested in the burl wood. Burl wood is prized for its beautiful patterns and unique grain structures, which transform each piece into a work of art. Crepe Myrtle Burl, in particular, has a delicate texture and comes in a variety of colors, including light cream and reddish-brown.
Gathering materials:
Gather all of the supplies and tools you'll need before you start creating. You'll need Crepe Myrtle Burl pen blanks, a lathe, chisels, various grit sandpaper, a mandrel, a drill, and pen kit components such as the mechanism, clip, and nib.
Select and prepare the pen blank.
Select a Crepe Myrtle Burl pen blank that matches your aesthetic tastes. Examine the blank for flaws or inconsistencies before cutting it to the correct length for your pen with a saw. To prevent the blank from cracking while drying, seal the ends with wax.
Drying Pen Blanks:
Crepe Myrtle Burl, like most burl woods, has a high moisture content. Allow the pen blank to dry completely before attempting to use it. To adapt, keep the blank in a cool, dry place for a few weeks. Patience is essential to getting a stable and beautiful finish.
Mounting the blank on the lathe:
After the pen blank has dried sufficiently, mount it to the lathe using a spur center and a live center. Take the time to correctly position the blank to prevent wobbling and uneven rotation.
Shaping the Pen:
Turn on the lathe and form the Crepe Myrtle Burl pen blank with your preferred chisels. Allow the natural patterns of the burl to influence your design. Experiment with different cuts to bring forth the wood's distinct character. Maintain a low lathe speed for improved control.
Sand to perfection:
While shaping the pen, halt the lathe and sand the wood. Begin with coarse-grit sandpaper and work your way down to finer grits to get a smooth and polished finish. This method is required to unveil the wonderful patterns concealed behind the burl.
The Drill Pen's Components:
To drill the necessary holes in the pen blank, use a drill bit that is compatible with the pen kit components. Make sure to correctly measure and mark the locations to ensure that the pen components are aligned.
Assembly of the pen.
Now comes the interesting part: creating your Crepe Myrtle Burl pen. Insert the pen mechanism, clip, and nib, and carefully follow the instructions included with your pen. This phase brings your idea to life, changing it from a bare piece of wood into a working writing instrument.
Finishing touches:
Apply a treatment to enhance the inherent beauty of the crepe myrtle burl. To obtain a glossy appearance, many woodworkers use a clear finish, such as a high-quality wood polish or a thin layer of cyanoacrylate (CA) adhesive. Allow the finish to dry completely before handling the pen.
Admire Your Work:
Take a moment to admire your Crepe Myrtle Burl pen's craftsmanship and unique features. Each swirl and pattern in the wood tells a story, giving your products a distinct appearance.
How to Take Care of Your Crepe Myrtle Burl Pen.
To ensure the brightness and life of your pen, keep it away from direct sunlight and harsh temperatures. To keep the pen bright, polish it on a regular basis with a soft cloth. With careful care, your Crepe Myrtle Burl pen can serve as a permanent reminder of your carpentry abilities.

You should prioritize the flatness of your table saw top because it directly affects the accuracy and quality of your cuts. When it comes to woodworking, precision is key. A flat table saw top ensures that your workpiece stays stable and secure during cutting, allowing for clean and precise cuts every time.
A table saw with a non-flat top can result in inaccurate cuts, leading to wasted material and compromised project outcomes. Even a slight deviation from flatness can cause your workpiece to wobble or bind against the blade, resulting in uneven edges or jagged cuts. This lack of precision not only affects the appearance of your finished product but also its structural integrity.
To achieve optimal flatness, you need to regularly check and maintain your table saw top. Start by inspecting for any visible irregularities such as warping or bowing. If you notice any issues, take the necessary steps to correct them before proceeding with any woodworking projects.
Investing time in ensuring your table saw top is perfectly flat may seem tedious, but it is essential for achieving professional-level results in your woodworking endeavors. By prioritizing this aspect of your equipment, you will improve the accuracy and quality of your cuts, ultimately enhancing the overall craftsmanship of your projects.
Factors Affecting Table Saw Top Flatness
When it comes to achieving a level surface on your table saw, factors such as humidity and temperature can affect its overall flatness. These elements may seem insignificant, but they play a crucial role in the performance of your tool. Understanding how these factors impact the flatness of your table saw top will help you maintain accuracy and precision in your woodworking projects.
Here are five key factors that can affect the flatness of your table saw top:
Humidity: Changes in moisture levels can cause wood to expand or contract, which can result in warping or bending of the table saw top.
Temperature: Extreme heat or cold can also cause the materials used in the construction of the table saw to expand or contract unevenly, leading to an uneven surface.
Storage conditions: Storing your table saw in an area with high humidity or extreme temperature fluctuations can further exacerbate flatness issues over time.
Material quality: Inferior materials used in manufacturing the table saw may not have sufficient stability to withstand changes in environmental conditions, resulting in a less flat surface.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance such as cleaning and lubricating critical components will ensure optimal performance and prevent potential issues that could affect the flatness of your table saw top.
Ideal Flatness Tolerance for Table Saw Tops
To achieve optimal precision in your woodworking projects, it is important to consider the ideal tolerance for the levelness of your table saw surface. The flatness of your table saw top directly affects the accuracy and quality of your cuts. Ideally, your table saw top should be as flat as possible to ensure consistent and precise cuts.
The recommended tolerance for a table saw top is generally within 0.001 to 0.003 inches across its entire surface. This level of flatness ensures that no significant deviations or undulations could affect the accuracy of your cuts. Achieving this level of flatness requires careful attention to detail during manufacturing.
High-quality materials and meticulous machining techniques are essential factors in producing a perfectly flat table saw top. Regular maintenance is also crucial to maintaining optimal flatness over time. Check the flatness periodically with a straightedge or precision measuring tools and make any adjustments or re-leveling if needed.
Methods to Check and Measure Table Saw Top Flatness
One effective method for checking the levelness of your table saw surface is by using a straightedge or precision measuring tools. This will ensure that your cuts are accurate and precise, resulting in high-quality work.
Here are some important considerations when checking and measuring the flatness of your table saw top:
Accuracy: A flat table saw top is crucial for achieving accurate and consistent cuts. Even slight deviations that can lead to uneven edges or improper angles.
Safety: A level surface reduces the risk of kickback, where the workpiece gets thrown back towards you with great force. By ensuring a flat tabletop, you minimize this danger and promote a safer working environment.
Durability: A flat table saw top prolongs your blade's lifespan by preventing unnecessary wear and tear. It also helps maintain alignment with other components, such as miter gauges or rip fences.
Smooth operation: A level surface promotes smooth movement of materials across the table, allowing for easier feeding and reducing friction during cuts.
Professional results: Whether you're a hobbyist or a professional woodworker, a flat table saw top enables you to produce high-quality results that meet your clients' standards.
Tips for Achieving and Maintaining a Flat Table Saw Top
youtube
Ensure the accuracy and longevity of your woodworking projects by implementing these helpful tips for achieving and maintaining a level surface on your table saw. A flat table saw top is crucial for precision cuts and smooth operation. Follow these tips to ensure your table saw top remains flat over time:
Regular Inspection: Check the flatness of your table saw top regularly using a straightedge or precision machinist's level. Look for any signs of warping, unevenness, or dips in the surface.
Cleanliness is Key: Keep your table saw clean from dust and debris that can accumulate over time. Use compressed air or a vacuum to remove any particles that could affect the flatness of the surface.
Proper Storage: Store your table saw in a dry environment to prevent moisture absorption, which can cause wood movement and affect the overall flatness of the top. Consider using a cover when not in use to protect it from dust and humidity.
Avoid Heavy Loads: Do not place heavy objects on your table saw top as it can lead to permanent deformation or sagging.
Regular Maintenance: Inspect and adjust the trunnions, arbor assembly, fence alignment, and blade parallelism regularly to ensure optimal performance.
Conclusion
Therefore, it's crucial to have a flat table saw top for accurate cuts. Factors like material quality, manufacturing processes, and regular maintenance can affect its flatness. To achieve optimal performance, aim for a tolerance of less than 0.001 inches.
You can use methods like a straightedge or dial indicator to measure and check the flatness. By practicing proper maintenance and taking necessary precautions, you can maintain a flat table saw top and get the best woodworking results.

Random Dead Doesn't Mean Gone au headcannons:
Leo has a leg brace and cane. Splinter teaches him fight with both twin katana and a cane. Both his swords and cane have tanto hidden in them.
Leo and Raph technically know how to swim, but when the meet Splinter it's been a long time since they last had the chance. Donnie and Mikey never learned how to. The first spring and summer after meeting Splinter, he takes them to a river that runs through the forest to teach them.
Splinter used to smoke when he was alive. He quit roughly a year before he died and still sometimes gets cravings, although he doesn't realise what the cravings are for until Casey's grandmother figures it out. Knows how to blow smoke rings and uses ghost powers to do it.
Mikey, Donnie and Splinter all have ADHD and autism.
Mikey is also dyslexic.
Donnie has OCD.
Leo and Raph are both autistic. Leo has problems with his throat as well as his bad leg.
Splinter and Raph both have depression.
Splinter also has memory problems due to [REDACTED]. He can be part way through a task and completely forget what he's supposed to be doing and needs a reminder to get back on track. When the Old House becomes the Lair, their kitchen has a big chart with days of the week, what chores need doing and all the extracurriculars the boys have. It helps everyone know what's doing on, but it's main purpose is to remind Splinter what he needs to do.
As time goes on, his memory problems will get worse.
Venus exists in this universe! Her birth name is Mei, but Venus is a nickname that stuck. She met at least two of the brothers when they lived in the same children's home. It's been a few years since she last saw them - Venus was adopted before them and lives in New York with her dad.
Her dad runs a shop of odds and ends. It's one of those places you can spend hours just exploring and still not find the other end of the building. There's a section that's just got knitting supplies and some very old books, so Mikey and Raph go in one day and run into Venus again.
Venus and her dad end up meeting Splinter. Her dad's reaction is to offer Splinter some tea. When everyone is confused that he's not at all freaked out, he just says Splinter is not the weirdest thing he's ever seen and then refuses to elaborate.
Her dad and Splinter are funny old men together. (Yes Splinter is technically frozen at 32 in this au, but he can be an old man in spirit.)
April has a ghost hunting show.
If you want to summon Splinter (on purpose) offerings of tea, peanut butter or cheese are acceptable. If you want to summon him and then get absolutely nothing done, godzilla merch is the way to go
Casey and April have summoned Splinter before by accident.
April, Mona and Irma are all on a roller derby team. Venus may join the team, I'm not sure. If not, she cheers them on.
Splinter's attitude to other ghosts being in his territory is essentially "I do not care, just don't be a prick about it."
Some spirits will leave him offers when travelling through his territory. Mostly peices of metal, wood, bits of food. One very confused spirit left him weilding equipment. When Splinter accepted it, he started getting random meltworking, woodworking and tools for pretty much any craft you can think of. It's like being friends with a bunch of confused but helpful crows.
If Splinter wants to go into the forest, he leaves offerings for the forest deer.
The deer will give him peices of metal and wood from its forest from time to time - he uses these to make his kids' weapons.
The Lair has: chickens, a cat, two dogs, and a turtle. They also use the fields around the house to grow potatoes and other fruits and vegtables. Some of it they keep, others they take to the farmer's market to make extra money
Casey's grandmother took one look at Splinter and adopted him. Splinter had no idea what was happening at the time. This is another reason Casey calls him Tio
