In the quasi-conclusion to Gwen's "Order Neophyte" arc, I pointed out that the dialogue suggests it happens back to back with the next arc, but that one isn't actually unlocked for another ten levels. So I headcanon that the scene combines two different conversations that "actually" would happen a few days apart, given those ten levels.

And as a member of the Order of Whispers, Gwen would need to have some kind of cover for her activities and not just run missions 24/7. And she does have to sleep. I can see why the game doesn't go into that kind of minutia, but I imagine it's a thing.

So this post is not a personal story-with-amendments recap, but pure headcanon (ETA: that mostly slides into fic).

In my imagination, Halvora gruffly tells Gwen to get some rest, act normally in Divinity's Reach, and return to the Chantry in exactly three days at such and such an hour for their next mission. Gwen agrees, and she and Tybalt leave the Chantry.

She half-expects to be attacked on the spot again, but they're fine without Demmi's hunters on the loose. I imagine Tybalt stands a bit awkwardly and is like "well ... uh ... thanks. I'm sure it's been a bit rough."

Gwen feels she's handled herself with great aplomb, actually, given the multiple reasons she's had to be upset, and politely says, "Rough? I wouldn't say that, unless I missed something that went wrong." It's not hard to sound anxious as she thinks back. "Did it?"

Tybalt says something to the effect of "No! No! It was great, we did great."

She relaxes, but at that point, she's just going to wait him out to figure out what he's getting at.

"And I really appreciate you wanting to work with me again, especially with me being like this"—he glances at the left paw—"and, well, you know, who I am, and you being you. Can't be easy."

He's not looking at her, clearly uncomfortable about whatever it is he's trying to say, as if he'd like to avoid a difficult subject. Gwen doesn't really know anything about him that he hasn't told her, except the obvious basics, but he's got to know how little information she has on him. And she realizes: he doesn't mean "who I am" so much as "what I am."

A little flatly, she says, "You mean, because you're a Charr and I'm a human."

He gives an uneasy nod.

"An Ascalonian human," she goes on—not aggressively, but not backing down. "You knew that the whole time, didn't you?"

By silent assent, they start making a meandering way towards Lion's Arch, avoiding the most direct route.

"Yeah," he says. "Our mutual friends told me what I needed to know."

They fight off some random skale or something without needing to say much, and as Gwen is cleaning her sword, she says—less urgently than she feels— "I'm curious about what they thought you needed to know."

He hesitates.

She presses, "We're partners, aren't we? It helps to be upfront with each other, unless there's something you're not supposed to tell me. —Oh, I think this is the best place to cross."

They swim across the channel on the way to Lion's Arch, but continue their indirect route, keeping alert for threats or listeners. Gwen is starting to doubt he'll say anything more, until he abruptly says,

"Well, they said you're not a Separatist."

She actually laughs. "True. Separatists are fools and traitors."

She expected him to agree with her. He just seems more uncomfortable than ever.

"But," he goes on, "you don't like my kind."

She stops smiling.

"I didn't expect you to hide it so well, honestly. The Order's been watching you a long time. They said you grew up hungry and without shelter most of the time because your sire and your mother were fighting us in Ascalon. You had your—your sort of fahrar instead."

"My what?" she says politely, welcoming the tangent because she's actually unsettled by him just laying it out like that, even though she asked.

"It's a Charr thing," says Tybalt, and Gwen stiffens. "It's the people you grow up with, who become your warband if everything goes right. But sometimes it doesn't and—anyway. That's not the point. The point is, they said you had a sort of fahrar, growing up, but not enough of one to keep you safe. You hid a lot, but not that you hated the Charr and blamed us for your parents being gone."

"I don't blame you specifically," she says at last, and looks up at him. He seems as absurdly nonthreatening as ever, and it takes all her resolve to keep her hands from fidgeting, or clenching, or something. At last, she lifts her chin. "But they're right. I did blame your people."

She hesitates, not quite willing to risk 'And I still do' to his face. It would be foolish, jeopardizing their tentative partnership and the good will of a friendly superior. And she's torn between the stifled resentment she feels and a certain—well, it's hard to hate Tybalt. She can't, really. But she doesn't think he understands.

"I was surprised to meet someone else with my last name," she says carefully, "because half the family died in the Searing, and most of the rest were killed as they tried to escape the Charr. They'd just been merchants in Ashford before. They weren't soldiers, they weren't threats, and my family only became fighters because your people wouldn't stop hunting us."

She's astonished to hear her voice rise, to hear words freely tripping out of her mouth. With Tybalt, of all people!

"It was our home, too," Tybalt says quietly, "and that was a long time ago."

"It hadn't been your people's home for longer than that," she says, figuring that it doesn't make much difference, now. "And it wasn't such a long time ago that my mother died. She said she was going to bring us home—my sister and me. But we can't ever go back to Ashford, and Kryta will never truly welcome us. I only have a roof over my head in Divinity's Reach because my sister and I have been useful to the Seraph, but it's not home. Nowhere is. Deborah's noble enough not to resent it."

I'm not goes unspoken.

"Well, you could," he says. They can see the entrance to Lion's Arch, and slow down.

"I could what?" says Gwen, calming. She doesn't lose her temper much, and she doesn't like the feeling when she does. She takes a steadying breath, hoping she hasn't obliterated her entire future in the Order.

"Go to Ashford," Tybalt says. "There's a cease-fire now, after all. And we'll see that there's peace between our peoples—like it or not."

"I do want peace," she says earnestly. "It's just—" She straightens, deciding she's betrayed enough weakness for one day. "Anyway, a human mage alone in Ashford? That's just asking for trouble."

He hesitates, then says, "I have to go back to Lion's Arch. It's where I live these days. But I'm not exiled or anything. Technically. If you promise you won't—I don't know, murder anyone, I could take you to Ascalon. You've never actually been there, have you?"

Gwen stares at him. As lovable as he's been, she's still utterly shocked by this.

"No, I haven't," she says. "I always wanted to, but I needed the gate fee money for food, and..."

She's babbling again. Gwen snaps her mouth shut.

"I can pay it," he says. "Oh, you can murder Flame Legion, by the way. Magic 'em to death to your heart's content." He sounds nearly gleeful, in fact. "It'll just make them madder! But you'd better be sure you really want the peace treaty to go through—and that you don't mind fighting ghosts or Separatists."

The ghosts of her people, perhaps her own ancestors. The Separatists—her kin, however foolish and disloyal and vicious.

But seeing Ascalon, at last. It had grown back, people said: the kertch trees, the sunflowers. She could see them, touch them. She could set foot on the same land that her foremothers and forefathers had, back when they were prosperous tradesfolk instead of starving beggars on the streets or desperate soldiers in Ebonhawke.

"You don't have to go see it," he adds. "Maybe you'd rather pray or something."

Gwen actually laughs again.

"You can believe this," she says. "I don't hate you at all, Tybalt. I'd be glad to see Ashford with you."

He claps her on the shoulder with his good paw, and her knees nearly buckle.

"Good to hear," he says. "I don't hate you either, Gwen. Tomorrow it is. Meet you in the Trader's Forum?"

"I'll be there," says Gwen.

Favourite thing

I am in love with how in-game his disguise is just a mask with the class he's disguised as. It's so stupid and dumb and funny. In the lore it's probably just him being disguised as the character regularly without any mask, but it's still so funny. I also adore every gag of him ever where he's disguised as an object and has the object on that mask. It's priceless.

Least favourite thing

I do wish we got more information about him. I get his whole appeal is that he's this mysterious guy and all, but I do wish we got to explore his past a little. I think there's a lot of potential for James Bond type stuff there.

Favourite line

"26 years ago, I dropped a 'sex bomb' on your mother." I love it both for the comedy of it and also because UAGHHUAHHH HE'S TELLING SCOUT HE'S HIS FATHERRRR WAILING

I think Sniper and Spy are really great friends. They get along quite well, despite their occasional squabbles. I don't think of them in a romantic sense, even if they are quite intimate and close. Good friends. I also really like Spy and Pyro. They're cute buds.

Hm, it's a toss up between Freedom Fries (Soldier/Spy), Practical Espionage (Spy/Engie), and Spoovy (Spy/Heavy). I also like Spy/Sniper in a romantic sense, but personally I prefer it platonic. Spy is a very shipable character.

Well there's the obvious forbidden ship, which is a clear and obvious pick-me answer. Normal people should hate that ship. Uhhh,,other than that? I dunno.

Random headcanon

Utter coffee snob. He's pretentious and has like $50,000 dollars worth of equipment to make his prissy little mocha fraps.

Unpopular opinion

Spy isn't a jerk. Snobby and pretentious? Absolutely. I wouldn't say he's particularly rude though. No more rude and antagonistic than the others during their voice lines. In fact, canon material goes against this. He tries to organize a little bucket list thing before they all die. He spends what he believes to be his last few days alive helping Scout try and get a date with Miss Pauling. He is willing to do a suicide pact with Pauling so that they get out of being tortured to death. He sticks around with Scout after they're all fired to keep him and his mother afloat. Hell, he gives Scout closure when he seems to be on the verge of death. I think people assume French = jackass which means he's constantly insulting people and rude. No, he's not.

Song I associate with them

OUghhHH,, that's a hard one to think. Something Stupid by Frank Sinatra. I associate a lot of 1950s songs with him, and Frank Sinatra is perfectly romantic for a guy like him. I also think that him and Scout's Ma hooking up came around from him developing feelings for somebody he shouldn't have, for their own sake. He loved her dearly. Still does even after all these years. But, he can't commit. He doesn't want to settle down. He wants that honeymoon phase to last forever.

Something about this picture is just really sweet to me. I think a lot of people forget about this comic and how Spy interacts with the boy, which makes me sad since he's...not that bad with him, ya know?

💭 A RANDOM HEADCANON: Tess is Jinx's niece; her parents passed when she was 10-11, and it was Jinx that took her in for the next few years, getting her into weapons development and taking her with him on pretty much every job he ran, no matter how dangerous. This is how she wound up falling in with Torn—who may be Jinx's third cousin on his mother's side, although Jinx may also be lying about this, it's very unclear—just a few months after the collapse of the holy district. Torn was still very much in recovery at this point, and Jinx had to run a job that he couldn't bring Tess on due to limited space, so he asked Torn if he'd be okay having Tess stay with him for a day. Torn was like "...why the hell do you have a teenage girl?" and the rest is history. Tess has been working with Torn ever since! (This is also why Krew hired her to work the bar so readily, since he's the one that hires Jinx most often and thus had some experience with Tess already, leading him to consider her trustworthy but naive.)

����️GENERAL OPINION: I love Tess! I appreciate that she's not just fanservice, because she could have been quite easily—instead she's a valuable member of the Underground, working intelligence and espionage, and later she works in weapons development for the Freedom League. Nobody questions that she can do any of these things, she's openly relied on by Torn and Jak, while the affection between her and Daxter is sincere and genuine. She's a sweetheart with sharp parts, and I adore that about her.

A NOTP I have with said character: Most ships are no-go for me with Charmy >_> I just don't like 'em. A random headcanon: I think Charmy doesn't understand that he's being rude half of the time - he's just one of those 'say it how you mean it' blunt kids who giggles too much. I think that he also doesn't really understands that he's been rude, or that people are annoyed - he's low empathy, but full of boundless energy and joy, he interacts with most people in good faith and doesn't understand why someone WOULD say something in bad faith, so he just does not get that he's in trouble until he's being scolded, then he's just left confused XD THEN he gets rude. because it's not FAIR. General Opinion over said character: I LOVE Charmy! He's one of my absolute favourites, I used to pretend to be him on the playground. Okaaay. MFS Season 3 Episode 9, let’s go. Play by play, yeah?

Warning: Major rambling ahead. I warned you.

So as I’ve predicted… there was trial, Wade returns and exposes Silver, and temporary happy ever after happens.

I’ll start off by saying that Raelle was the perfect person to deliver that speech. She relates to both sides perfectly and that speech? So empowering. I’d go to war for her if she asks, lol.

Also. Go Wade! That was surely a badass entrance, exactly how I envisioned it.

…

And then we’re back at Fort Salem.

Cute Raylla as expected.

They’re perfect, your honour. I want the braids back, please!!

It’s all good…

And… Gregorio appears.

And I swear… I have nothing against the actor (he’s cute and all, his character is average at best) BUT Tally seems to have chemistry with everyone, except him. Some people even shipped Gloria and Tally, for crying out loud. But Gregorio? There’s just no spark there.

I understand that they had no time for a fully fleshed out story, but they could have left it out, tbh. It won’t change the story. I mean, Gregorio was in prison—not off to the sides fighting or doing espionage work that added to the storyline. Nothing. Nada.

Again, I’m ranting too much here, but this is just so unfair for Tally.

First off, Abigail, the playgirl who only cared about rising to glory and living up to her family legacy—now a true leader, a soldier who now understands the responsibility of wearing a uniform. In romance, she’s a one-man girl, fully committed.

Then, we have Raelle, Cession girl who was a rebel and hated the army and what it stood for—now, she had a full change of heart. She does what she does now, because it’s what’s right, and not because of spite. From a lone wolf who tries not to show her feelings, now she’s found her unit and found love and romance in Scylla… Raelle found purpose to keep living and fighting.

Then to add, Scylla our necro baby… former Spree agent—now working alongside her former “enemy”. She saw the bigger picture and saw error in her previously misguided ways. Another lone wolf who now found family and friends. Again, she found Raelle, the home she’d been longing for.

And then we have Tally… Now, don’t get me wrong. She is definitely the most developed character. From a naive girl, she blossomed to a woman who stands her ground for what’s right. She literally saw the world for what it is and still fights for it.

She was from a matrifocal compound, a virgin—and now, it’s like she swapped personalities with young Abigail. I don’t shame her for it (get it Tally), but it’s just hard for me to see Tally just suddenly sucking faces with someone that I haven’t seen her interact with and actually build a relationship with. It’s just so out of the blue. They didn’t even have a scene where they’re conversing and talking about something deeper. It’s all physical, no emotion. I hate that for Tally. She deserves more than that. This is like discrete character assassination.

Anyway, moving on…

My happy pills, Raylla… at the lighthouse. They’re so happy. They deserve this and so much more, my babies!!

The pre-wedding scene with Raylla and Nicte is also adorable. Nicte is still a hardass trying to act like she doesn’t care, but she does. She cares for the unit like they’re her own. MamaNicte?

And the lobster comment. Hilarious.

Edwin and Raelle reunion, yes! I wished it was more emotional though. They haven’t seen each other, c’mon. I expected more.

But then… Anacostia and Alder. Omigod, now this made me cry. When Alder “died” the first time, it was Anacostia’s cries of grief that killed me… and now, their reunion scene is just, wow. That hug was everything.

Then, that Adil and Gregorio scene… they have more chemistry than Tally and Gregorio does. My brotp, for sure, lol.

Also that Khalida and Adil reunion…so cute. I wonder what Khalida told Adil. Hmmm.

And the unit huddle—with Scylla! I am such a simp for these moments.

Abigail and that scene with her grandmother is adorable, too. She deserves this.

Then…of course, Alder and Tally scene. Alder’s words are so ominous. Celebrate loved ones while they can? All might change soon?? Why so grim on a wedding day??

Anyway,, the wedding!

What can I say.. it definitely shows that they’re rushing. I hoped we could’ve heard the vows or even the I do’s, but the whole thing’s like a music video, lol. It kinda took away a bit of the emotion that I expected to feel. It’s still cute though.

Then Nicte… I can’t believe I’m seeing her look so rattled. Wade is a great negotiator, no-nonsense woman.

Edwin and Raelle moment—always sweet. They deserve the world after the rollercoaster of emotions they’ve been through regarding Willa.

Then, Abigail and Jem Bellweather… there’s definitely something to unfold there.

Then of course, after happiness comes bitterness. Silver got out, surprise surprise. And Hearst is still a freakin’ psycho.

Btw, necro teacher is a badass! She doesn’t get much credit and appreciation but I see you, Izadora. You fought well. The only consolation now is that you’ll finally be with the Mother.

And I’m worried for Penelope. I hope she’d learn that it was Hearst who poisoned her and then she’d go apeshit on him. Hang on.. if he’s like a “witch” because of the stolen vocal cords, does that mean he can be affected by the witch plague?? I hope it’s his own creation that ends up killing him. That’ll be so satisfying.

Meanwhile, our beloved unit are enjoying a campfire. And yes, mamaCostia… I definitely didn’t predict “this”.

And Raelle singing to Scylla (and everyone)… gosh, you can see Raelle/Taylor’s nerves as Scylla/Amalia stared at her singing… and when Scylla looks, she really gazes at Raelle… her feelings are palpable.

It’s all so happy… then it’s gone again, as predicted.

But Raelle! Why does she suddenly look possessed and why is she bleeding?? Did Hearst do something to the Mother? And who’s back??

I swear, if something happens to any of them, I will have more and more words for you, Eliot.

Gosh, I’m so anxious for what happens next. There’s still so many to wrap up.

This episode already felt so rushed, I hope the last episode is at least not as much. I feel like they could’ve made better cuts to showcase the story, add some more to other scenes and leave out other that’s unnecessary *ahem*Gregorio*ahem*.

But I still have faith in this show. I hope this season ends with a bang.

And I think that’s all I’ve got. Haha.

A Jiang Yanli and Luo Binghe brotp would be so cute. They can cook together. Luo Binghe would admire her courage and wisdom. Jiang Yanli would see the kindness and sweetness hidden beneath Luo Binghe's tough demon lord exterior.

(Jiang Cheng? Definitely against it. Probably gets roped into some covert espionage missions with Wei Wuxian and Jin Zixuan so they can figure out how dangerous this guy is. Luo Binghe knows it's going on the entire time. He tells Jiang Yanli about it. She's just happy the three of them are spending time together.)

(Wei Wuxian would be a little salty if his shijie starts babying someone else. Especially someone dodgy! Jiang Yanli would placate him. But Wei Wuxian would still keep a close eye on that Luo Binghe until he's satisfied that he's not dangerous. After some threats, some almost-fights, and some spying, t turns out the demon lord isn't such a bad guy. In fact, Wei Wuxian can kind of understand him. RIP Luo Binghe, he accidentally made another new friend without even wanting to.)

A random headcanon (i’ll do a few because i feel like i don’t talk about him a lot on here): he was WAY more popular within the clan than madara was. everybody knew him and liked him and he was the person people could come to if they wanted madara to do something differently, because they knew madara would listen to him. he fought mainly with genjutsu and was excellent at espionage and shapeshifting in order to get information and wreak havoc. he had a shrine devoted to indra in his quarters. he loved cats.

General opinion: i think he was underused in canon, i wish we had gotten to know him better.

favorite thing about them

his dedication to his ideals, especially under pressure. i wish that i could be so steadfast in what i believe in. even as a 90 pound asthmatic, he was unflinching in his determination to do what was right. and it wasn't in your traditional, masculine, power-trip way, nor did it become that after the serum. he stayed soft and kind and willing to physically fight but preferring to handle things nonviolently. he's about as close to perfect as someone can get without getting unrealistic.

least favorite thing about them

his ending. while, logically, i can understand that chris evans wanted out and steve had to be written out in a way that felt like an actual ending (ie. depowering him or just having him retire and disappear would be super unsatisfying) it still just...feels wrong. even putting aside the fact that it breaks the time travel rules set in place, it feels so out of character for steve to live a quiet, married life, knowing that hydra is infiltrating shield, that bucky is actively being tortured, that countless horrible world events that he could prevent are going to happen...i think that if they had said in interviews that when he went back to peggy, it created a branched timeline in which he prevented all of those things, allowing for a lot of nice, canon, fluffy/domestic things intermingled with adventure and espionage, plus a new, better timeline that could bring interesting new characters into the main universe (steve and peggy's kids/grandkids? rikki barnes? anyone???) while leaving our peggy's canon life with sousa alone, then i could accept that he left bucky and sam. it would still be kind of a dick move, but it could be implied that the existence of a universe where he was never the winter soldier could be comforting for bucky, and then sam could be rightfully bothered that he wasn't let in on any of it, and we'd get development for all three of them through that conflict. but instead, they repeatedly have said that he just...does nothing. and that is not steve rogers.

captain america: the first avenger is the best marvel origin movie and just as good as the rest of the cap trilogy (for a long time, i liked it better than ca:tws). it was overshadowed when it came out because audiences still expected superhero movies to be more action-based, but in terms of quiet moments and really exploring steve as a character, it was way ahead of its time
