—is below the cut. The goal of this project is to explore the following phenomena with as much context and nuance as I can manage, tracing our history over the past 15 years:

What about us, and what about Dan and Phil, drew in and continues to draw in a very specific audience. If they are a ranch metaphor, we are a pizza metaphor 🥗🍕🫶🏻

Why we were Like That™, by which I mean so parasocially invested in them that we became, at times, the most annoying people on the internet. Much of that reputation is undeserved, and the videos on the phandom to date have been strongly negative. So, uh, I guess I'm going to put my face on camera and (mostly) defend us.

Hi, this is a silly question, but welp. Do you think publishing new content on ao3 pays off? I feel like the fandom is dying a bit and I don't know if it's worth writing ff :((

maybe this is just my personal opinion because i wasnt here at the height of the hype especially in 2022 (i watched the show in march 2024 and got into the fandom in june), but the rise fandom is not dying, dont worry.

there are posts here that frequently get thousands of notes, sometimes within days, fics that have gotten pretty popular that are RECENT, a whole culture of aus and events and zines that are still running.

ive been in dying fandoms (the pjo book fandom is so dead yall its joever) and in fandoms that were never even big in the first place (i was in a niche pokemon webcomic community that had upwards of maybe like 40 people active in its discord server, and most of the adults there were republicans or child groomers or usually both .... i know hell, i was there for like four years. trust me) and i havent been in a community as big as rise's since liiike. 2019, i think!

and regardless of any new official content coming out, its also good to note that there are a lot of active and dedicated tmnt fans who make official content for other, much older iterations too, and ive noticed a lot of the people who do are older which is definitely a good thing. fandoms at the peak of their hype are usually INSANELY preteen-infested and it's not a good environment i think should be desired. the discourse i see going around on tiktok right now is deranged but its not new by any means. i REFUSE to be a boomer because im only 18 and i know what its like to be 12, but i do not desire nor envy that kind of fame BAHFHDHGH

but like still. point i was getting to is that even if its not at its peak of popularity i dont think the fandom will be dying any time soon and it's not something to be afraid of. i can cite several fics that did wonderfully in numbers (although i dont recommend basing quality off that, its just important to note) despite being recent and have had the fandom in a chokehold as of late. canary continuity could probably count as one of those considering how crazy it was around november or so..... i miss november :')

i think we all kind of see ourselves like drops of water in a bucket and hesitate to come in so strong because we underestimate the importance of our own voices, especially because fandom attracts very socially anxious people, but a lot of the anxiety about engagement can be mitigated by engaging yourself and being the change you want to see! this also counts with creating content-- the thing about ao3 is that you can have completely different audiences for different fics unlike other platforms from what i've seen, so something may flop at first and then do really well later, or even take a while to kick off (cvd and coming undone have been getting some love lately ive noticed... i keep telling myself i'll continue them and then forgetting)

i'd say its definitely worth a shot to post, because ive noticed that ao3 comment sections are overwhelmingly positive in most cases. ive gotten some passive-aggressive or pushy comments before (usually out of confusion because they werent paying attention, which isnt my fault, or because theyre excited and what to see more, which i still do find flattering) but its always been in a sea of a lot of really wonderful people, which has been really helpful because i have disabling anxiety and constantly doubt myself haha.

i think the advice i see a lot of "write for yourself" is kind of unhelpful and doesn't get to the root of the problem because i think it takes away from the fact that art is such a deeply social part of human expression, and we create it to share it,,, i think a better way to put it is that you should write self-indulgently, and there's always a good chance of finding your people by the time you're finished-- i've connected with a lot of people with VERY similar tastes to me because of my writing and it's been miraculous because as great as my other friends are, their interests vary wildly from mine LOL. its worth it even if you dont kick off immediately!!! and of course i urge everyone to engage with artists and writers whenever you can, it means the world to them!!

I actually love your responses to these idiots but genuine question how come you don’t ignore them? 😂 I feel like you’re giving them exactly what they want by responding and they only keep it going because they know you’ll answer. Gotta start ignoring them and treating them like the insignificant people they are.

I actually skip a lot of questions, especially if they are boring or just an agreement of something I said. I appreciate them, but I don't post them.

I am reluctant to call people 'idiots' just because they disagree. I think of them as maybe misinformed or ill informed. Which is okay. What I can't stand is blatant lying or falsification of information.

Now, the reason I answer a lot of questions even from those who argue with me or disagree, is because over the years, unfortunately, many Elriels retreated from larger platforms. They either left entirely because of the shipwar, others went to Discord or other private chat rooms. Which allowed for a huge vacuum to develop where GAs in particular, have been enjoying an unbothered existence, just outright lying or twisting everything to fit their narrative.

Elriels don't have huge IG or TIkTok accounts. I have a few thousand followers on here, which makes me one of the biggest Elriel accounts across all platforms. But many Elriels just don't bother, and I've always been kind of annoyed at the BS that's been spewed out there. The number of new readers who came to me and said 'i was fully convinced of GA' before I read the books and I even thought that I had somehow skipped a whole novel. But now I realized that it was all lies--is HUGE.

In general, I am just not too keen on seeing one of my favorite writer vilified and accused of awful things because of these books. The books meant a lot to me, still do, and I am hoping that people will continue enjoying them and not hating them because of a false narrative that's been created in the fandom.

Fandom (de)centralization

With the hardware-related intermittent outages at AO3, several people had a discussion in one of the news posts about the fandom centralization that has taken place over the past 15 years of AO3 existing.

At the same time, the fractures of decentralization - especially with things like invite-only discord servers etc - is also taking its strain on fandom as a community effort. And let's not even start talking about the commodification of fanworks.

So rather than start a discussion this, I'd like to point out a few AO3 alternatives other archives than AO3 (as it has been pointed out to me, these are not AO3 alternatives and I apologize for my word choice) for times of outages and maybe mirroring of your fanworks or hosting somewhere that is not AO3. A lot of us have lived through purges like strikethrough and while we do have AO3 and while I am glad for AO3, it's not infallible.

SquidgeWorld Archive (runs OTW software) - has also NB as relationship category and is pretty much an all purpose archive. You may be familiar with Squidge fandom image hosting or Squidge hosting space for fandom pages. All related.

superlove - a smaller archive run by melo, not currently giving out new invites but worth keeping an eye on. also runs OTW software

Ad Astra - Star Trek Fanfic Archive, also runs OTW software

CFA Archive - Comic Fanfic Authors Archive also runs otw software

Dreamwidth - is more of a blogging platform running the old LJ code, but pre-AO3 a lot of us had our fanfic on LJ. DW is fan-owned and allows the same things AO3 does.

TAU Wiki 2.0!

TL;DR The TAU wiki has moved!

Hey everyone! Mod F here to talk about a project we're working on regarding the Transcendence AU wiki. As many of you may know, the TAU Wiki is hosted on Wikia/FANDOM, an extremely popular free wiki farm. They've hosted us for years, and using them has been an easy and convenient way to get information about TAU out to people who are looking for it.

However, especially as time has gone on, we (and FANDOM users at large) have had more and more issues with the way the site is run. FANDOM is a for-profit company, and they profit off of the free labor of its editors through advertising. Advertising that is generally very large and obnoxious on every page on the wiki. That's the biggest of our concerns, although there are others: they control the platform, so they can control the content if they want, and they give limited options for wiki customizability.

Because of this, we have decided to start our own wiki, off of FANDOM. This way, we can be in control of the presentation, and we can own our own work. The new wiki has already been set up, and pages from the old wiki have already been moved over (although images need to be migrated manually). There's a little migration guide I've been working on, for anyone interested in helping. Of note: the new wiki is hosted on my own web server, and it is guaranteed to be ad-free forever.

FANDOM does not like it when communities move away. They don't allow deleting the old wiki, because they want to continue to make advertising revenue from it, and they ban administrators if they promote the new wiki. On top of that, they will usually appear much higher in search results than wikis on any other platform. These things make this project difficult, but not, I believe, impossible.

Despite all of that, we still want to do whatever we can to make our new wiki the best it can be. We'd love it if you could sign up and contribute information about your favourite TAU topics! If you have any questions, you can send us an ask, or join the TAU discord to talk about it.

Because of the news of what's happening on tumblr right now that we got today, I thought it would be a good idea to have a group chat of some kind to strengthen the community and friendships so it all doesn't get lost. 🍂🌿Changing Seasons: CoD Comment Bingo🌿🍂

The time has come for another small event hosted by the GhostSoap Server! This time it's very low-key and more about the general spirit of engagement and sharing joy. No sign-ups, no check-ins, just some fun

🌧 What's a bingo? Bingo is a small challenge with a 5x5 card of prompts. The goal is to finish those prompts in a line to get a bingo, and the ultimate goal is to black out your card - so finish every single prompt.

In our case, this is a comment bingo. Our prompts are based on what type of work to comment under, or what type of comment to leave. We hope this will encourage more comments and general engagement in the fandom!

🌻Comment rules To make this an actual challenge, there are a few rules you must follow while commenting!

each comment has to have a minimum of 50 words on fics, within the platform's capability (read: twitter will not allow for that, so instead just be thorough and genuine)

keysmashes, emojis, and quotes from the work do not count

each comment should be unique to other comments you leave in the bingo

do you have any advice for a new writer trying to post on ao3 I want my stories to be noticed (also thanks for not leaving -- so many writers are gone now)

*Looks at my recent hits counts* I'm not sure I'm the best reference for this 😅

I think there are two aspects to getting engagement on fan works:

1: There is the actual work you put into posting your fics. This includes tags, cross posting, and self promotion.

Tags: Make sure you are tagging what is relevant to your fic. AO3 doesn't run on an algorithm, so the way people find your fics is primarily through searches. There is an excellent post on tumblr somewhere that discusses how to accurately tag your work, and I highly suggest starting there! (Post here) Also when tagging, I would suggest considering what YOU would search if you were looking for a fic like this. Quite often, I've found that the tag I was looking for isn't on AO3 yet. Don't be afraid to type in the specific trope or AU you are writing. Look at other tags to get a feel for the structure of the tag, but other than that, have fun.

Also, it may seem counterintuitive, but don't over-tag, by which I mean tagging a bunch of tropes or characters or ships that aren't in your story. It's a fast way to have people disregard your fic instantly, or even mute your name on AO3. Especially in smaller fandoms, I totally get the desire to tag a bigger ship, but it just makes more trouble for you in the long run.

Similarly, on tumblr, keep tags tight. I tend to only tag ship, character (name and superhero name), show/ movie, franchise, and the challenge I'm answering if I am. I know other people tag the actors of the characters. I don't because I know when I go into an actor's tag, I don't want to see fic (of their characters or them either) but that's entirely up to you. But don't tag characters or shows etc that have nothing to do with your fic. This is just courtesy in fandom spaces.

Cross-posting: I admit, I can be kind of bad about cross-posting, but I do find that it helps drive engagement when I do buckle down and get it done. Cross-posting is publishing or promoting a fic on multiple platforms. For instance, I use AO3 AND tumblr. On tumblr fic posts,I link to the AO3 (if there is one, I'm pretty bad about publishing shorter things on here only) And when I publish the fic on AO3, I'm supposed to be linking back to my tumblr. This helps more people see your fic and it grows your community when people are able to follow you on various platforms and spread your fic and kudos around. If you have fan accounts elsewhere and you're comfortable with it, feel free to promote there as well. Also check any discord or group servers you may be on for rules about promoting or channels meant exactly for that.

Self-promoting: this is pretty similar to the above. Because AO3 doesn't have an algorithm, it's kind of up to you to keep interest alive in your fics, especially if you want eyes on it for the first several days afterwards. I know it feels embarrassing to reblog your own fic posts all the time, but it's impossible to tell who may have seen or not seen that you posted a new fic. I don't have any set times for this, personally. I try to catch what I consider active times on tumblr, but that's entirely subjective. It's just trial and error, really. Secondly, don't be embarrassed to recommend your own fics (I'm kind of bad at this) If someone is looking for recs on a specific trope or AU and you know you have just the fic, tell them! Unfortunately, you have to be your own biggest cheerleader when it comes to your own art because no one knows and loves it as much as you do. It feels awkward and I know I get embarrassed if people aren't reccing my fics on their own, but you really are your biggest advocate. Fandom is kind of a popularity contest sometimes 🤷‍♀️ Hype your own self up

2: Now that the technical stuff is done, let's move on to the community aspect of fic posting. (This is not really what you asked for, but i think it's more important sometimes than the actual tags and AO3 procedures) Curating a community and making friends is HUGE as far as readership goes. Especially in smaller fandoms (I assume this is about Sambucky fics/fandom) community is everything. Being a name people recognize and trust is important to regular readership.

Building community: don't be afraid to interact with other writers on this platform or others! The Sambucky fandom has this delightful habit of playfully creating headcanons and ficlets based off of text posts. The Daily Sambucky Fluff Diary project is so much fun and so interactive. I have honestly never been in such a fun, supportive group as the sambucky writers on tumblr. I highly suggest playing in this sandbox and getting familiar with other writers. We hype each other up all the time.

Understanding the rules of play: this is kind of an addendum, but the sambucky fandom is rightfully protective over Sam and his portrayal in fics, as well as Bucky. Reading fics, community interaction posts, and even the rules laid out in various challenges (like the bingos that are hosted at various times) will really help you get a sense of how to respectfully tell stories with Sam and Bucky without being racist, ableist, or disregarding to these characters. Quite often Sam (and Bucky, and especially Sambucky) is only there to prop up other characters. This is something the fandom will (again, rightfully) push back on and avoid. I highly suggest looking at the rules that are laid out in the Sambucky Library's bingo rounds to get an idea of the sandbox rules.

Engagement: the sambucky fandom is small, so we don't really have big organized events like Bangs or Reverse Bangs. However, we do have lots of fun, smaller challenges, namely the bingos! There is also Samtember, the Anniversary Challenge (I don't think that's what we called it) and various prompt week challenges, including an AU week (and we like birthdays here). I highly suggest following @ sambuckylibrary to keep apprised of challenges and prompts. Filling out these prompts when you can and want is a great way to break into the fandom and get engagement with your fics. They are all very low stakes and the reward is new fics, friends, and interaction!

I would also suggest joining a discord server, if that is something you're interested in. (I personally am not in any, but that's because I don't like making new accounts on things, not because I don't want to be part of the fun) This is a great place to interact with other fans, promote your fics, get new recs, and generally reap the fun of fandom in a more condensed space, rather than the entirety of AO3 or tumblr.

One last thing to keep in mind: you've already pointed out that fan fic/art/engagement is decreased in our fandom. This will be reflected in your hits/kudos/comments, especially if you're coming from a bigger fandom. Don't let this discourage you. In fact, I really suggest not looking at stats as much as possible. The wealth of engagement in this fandom will be seen in your relationships and interactions with other fans, not in skyrocketing numbers. Allegedly, Cap4 and Thunderbolts come out in 2025 and our guys look to have an episode in the next season of What-If, but without new content, interest will lag and numerical engagement with it. Just keep this in mind as you begin/ continue your journey into the fandom.

February 1st was your first day starting as a social media manager for BTS. Scratch that- not a manager, but the social media manager. Your new position came with many amazing benefits, and you liked working from home when you weren't with the band. It felt like you were amongst the popular kids at school for once. You followed them around all day, taking pictures and videos for their socials. It almost felt like a dream- your job was to be their friend and photographer. They treated you more as a friend than a staff member.

Then there was dealing with the fans. Being sneaky and having a secret fan account on multiple platforms allowed you to see what the fans were liking and into, giving you more ideas for the official pages. That meant you were in on all the inside jokes, leaked information, as well as what was trending amongst the fandom.

Back in your youth, you ran a fan Twitter account for One Direction. You understood the fans better than anyone else because you were in their positions at one time. Times have changed over the past decade (you didn't even want to think about how long it's been), but getting back into the groove of things was easy enough.

"y/n, you don't have to be so formal with us," Jimin would tease you all the time. While your job was fun, you were still a staff member. The boys would call you out constantly on you referring to them as 'sir', complaining about feeling old, and whatnot. They saw you as an equal and awaited the day you felt like one too.

Today was the filming for a Run BTS episode. You didn't entirely understand the concept of the game- all you knew was that they were painting something and whenever they asked you to take a photo, you would. It was adorable- they would hold up their paintings like proud little kids. The photos would be posted to their individual Instagram accounts, so you would send each member a copy on KakaoTalk.

"I think y/n should be the judge!" Taehyung said, standing up from his chair and pointing in your direction. You looked up from your phone in confusion, only having heard your name and 'judge'. The boys noticed your deer-in-headlights look and let out an endearing laugh.

"Just tell us who you think has the better painting. We'll film a male staff member saying your answer so you don't have to." Yoongi said. You appreciated not having to have your voice in the recording.

You gave each painting a very good look. Namjoon painted what appeared to be the Han River. Seokjin painted a rainbow that had been destroyed by brown paint, most likely by Jungkook that sat next to him. Jungkook didn't have much on his paper, obviously focusing more on disrupting the other members. Taehyung had an all-black abstract drawing that almost looked like it belonged in a modern art museum. Jimin's painting was of a variety of flowers in a bouquet, also destroyed by Jungkook by a brown marking of 'JK' right in the middle. Yoongi and Jimin seemed to have a combined painting that illustrated the seven members of BTS as crudely drawn stick figures when placed side by side. You chuckled at Yoongi's portion of the picture where he drew Seokjin with comically large shoulders.

"Yoongi wins solely for how he drew Jin," you said, smiling at the excessive cheering from the normally calm member.

It really was days like this when you enjoyed your job.

You sat in one of the production lounges on your laptop, editing some promotional photos for Instagram. Stretched out across the length of what had to be the building’s comfiest couch, you let out a long yawn before checking the time.

A text alert is shown as you checked your phone. An unknown number had called you before sending a simple text.

‘Hey y/n it’s Jin, are you busy?’

You smiled as you responded ‘No’ with a smiley face. You had no idea where or how Seokjin got your personal number, but you didn’t let that thought bother you much. Once you felt your phone buzz with an incoming phone call did you sit up straight on the couch.

“Hello? Seokjin?” You asked. The line was quiet for a moment before you heard Jin’s voice through the phone.

“Hey, could you come to our dorm? It’s not urgent or anything.”

“Sure! Just text me the address and I’ll be right over,” You replied, standing up and starting to exit the building. There were the sounds of shuffling and muffled voices through the phone, making you wonder just what was going on over there.

“Actually,” Jin suddenly said, “It’s nothing. You don’t have to.” You stopped in your tracks, now very curious and concerned about what was happening.

“No, no. Come over. I lied,” Seokjin said quickly after, correcting himself. “We want you to come over.”

Jimin roughly nudged Jin with his elbow once the phone was hung up. There was no way he didn’t sound suspicious during the call- stumbling on his words and even backtracking on what he said. They were lucky you just followed along.

“Fuck,” Yoongi said, holding his head in his hands, “Now we need to think of a real reason why we needed her here. Jungkook missing her isn’t a good enough answer.”

“I think it’s fine…” Jungkook mumbled to himself.

Namjoon looked across the room and into the kitchen, coming up with an idea upon seeing the state of it. “We could tell her we needed help putting the cabinet knobs back on.”

“We need our social media manager to help us with home renovations?” Yoongi questioned Namjoon’s idea.

“We wanted to film a TikTok?” Taehyung suggested.

“Yeah, yeah. Let’s go with that one!” Seokjin said.

By the time the bus had arrived, the sun was close to setting. You kind of started to regret agreeing to come- it was late and you were quite tired. Finally, you had regulated your sleep schedule to be like a normal adult’s, and the members of BTS had to screw with it. What else did you expect from them?

Within seconds you were buzzed in and headed to their shared penthouse. All seven of them had their own apartments by now, but they all chose to live together still for the majority of the time. You often questioned how they were able to do it for so long- you had two roommates back in college that made you question your sanity at any given moment.

You barely even knocked on the door before Jimin opened it with a smile. He ushered you inside, and you stood in the entryway in awe. The dorm was beautiful and big. Much, much bigger than your tiny apartment that probably couldn’t even fit seven people in it. The ceiling was high up and the doorways were arched, making everything feel so much bigger and fancier.

“y/n! Thank God you’re here!” Taehyung said, running up to you and hugging you. You awkwardly stood there, allowing him to hug you. Never once had you had any physical affection or contact with them, and it felt like a weird time to break the boundary. You laughed slightly as he let go of you.

After taking off your shoes, you were led into the living room where the other members sat. It was odd- everyone acted as if you weren’t needed and that there was nothing you needed to do. The sitting members all smiled and waved at you, remaining in their spots on the couch.

“So,” you clasped your hands together behind your back, swaying slightly on your feet. “What do you guys need?”

“We just-” Jungkook started to talk, only to be interrupted by Namjoon.

“We wanted help filming a TikTok!”

You stared at him confused. Filming a TikTok was something they were more than capable of doing by themselves. You had directed some and given them ideas, but for the most part, they would just film it themselves. It felt more natural and created more of a connection with the fan base.

“You could’ve just done it yourself, you know,” You let out a chuckle.

“We couldn’t think of any ideas for one,” Hoseok said. He stood up from his spot on the couch and motioned for you to take his seat. You pretended to ignore him at first, but he only kept insisting you take a seat.

“I mean, there’s a trend of AI face filters right now. You each could do that.”

“Yeah! Let’s just play around with filters,” Taehyung said, pulling out his phone. “Wait, y/n has an iPhone. Can we use your phone instead?”

Without hesitation, you handed your phone over to Taehyung. The seven of them took turns playing around with silly filters, doing their best to keep you out of the shot. You happened to glance over at one that turned Jungkook’s face into a creepy unicorn.

Hours passed by eventually, and you took your leave. You stood up from the couch, trying to locate your phone. A chorus of disappointed ‘aww’s filled the room at your sudden insistence on leaving.

“It’s already 22:00 and the buses have stopped running. It’ll be a long walk.” You claimed. Jungkook stood up and walked over to the windows, observing the dark skies and falling rain.

“It’s pouring rain out there. We can’t let you leave in this- you’ll catch a cold.” He said. The others agreed with him excitedly.

“Or I could just drive-”

“No! It’s too dangerous. We’ll fix the couch up for you tonight.” Taehyung interrupted Seokjin and his logical solution. Everyone soon began to hunt for spare pillows and blankets for you.

“It’s fine, guys. I really don’t need to stay here.” You slowly began to approach the front door, hoping no one would notice you leave. Hoseok snuck up behind you, blocking your path to the exit.

“Nope, no way. We’re older and know what’s best,” he said, guiding you back to the couch. A crack of lightning struck and illuminated the dorm, making you jump at the sudden strike.

“Awh, you’re afraid of storms,” Jimin said, placing the last of the blankets on the couch. “Now we’re definitely not going to let you outside in this weather.”

The couch had a plethora of blankets and pillows piled high on it. It seemed like each member brought at least two of each for you to sleep on. When you pointed out the hilarious amount of blankets and pillows, you were told that it got cold at night. You looked over towards the thermostat on the wall that read 23°C. The members pretended to ignore your questioning stare.

You gave in eventually and got settled in on the couch. They made sure you were tucked underneath each of the six blankets and placed some pillows on the floor next to you.

“Just in case you roll off in the middle of the night,” Namjoon said, seeming like he was speaking from experience.

Within minutes of the lights turning off and the boys going to bed, you were out like a light.

Yoongi, Jungkook, and Hoseok snuck out of their rooms at one point, standing in the hallway and watching as the city lights illuminated your sleeping body. They watched as each breath caused the blankets to move up and down, and as you softly snored.

“You’re crazy for having this idea, Hobi,” Yoongi said with his arms crossed.

“I mean, it sounds like a pretty good plan,” Hoseok tried to defend himself. “Jungkookie really wants her, and I figured it would be fun for us, too.”

X-Men. Just recently watched Deadpool and Wolverine so like many my hyperfixation is back and I’ve been rewatching every movie. While I would prefer to go off the movies (whether the og 2000s or the more recent ones with younger Charles and Erik), I can definitely try out the cartoons as well, I just haven’t seen the most recent cartoon that’s been out recently. I would love if someone could play Logan, Charles, or Erik for me!

The Boys/Gen V. I’ve finally gotten around to watching the new season after watching Gen V and my hyperfixation has also returned for the show!! I’ll gladly take either show but will say my oc for The Boys is more developed then the one I have for Gen V. Characters I’d love for my character: MM, Butcher, Homelander, Jordan, Marie

My Hero Academia. The end of a beloved series😭. I’ve read most of the manga but anime wise I just finished the first war. I don’t mind where we have the rp take place really, whether one of the arcs or after the timeskip in the ending. For me I would love the characters: Shoto, Tenya, Tamaki, Keigo/Hawks, Shota/Eraserhead, Enji/Endeavor.

The Bear. Currently watching the show and I’m absolutely in love. Give me all the angst and drama especially for this show lol. My oc isn’t necessarily complete for the show yet so I may just send her basics and fc! For characters I’d love to pair her with Richie, Carmy, Michael (before the events of the show or one where he was found just in time).

I fully recognize that being sad about losing my blorbos is not like a Real Problem, but I've decided that given the whole Sabra situation I can't in good conscience ever support Marvel again, and every day I remember another character that I'm never gonna get to see again and I get so sad. How are you dealing with it?

Okay fun answer that is like so deeply unserious but like i do think it is practical if you're like me and fandom has been your main hobby and identity for years. and then i'm putting the more political and upsetting answer under the cut because frankly they should be separate posts but I only got the one ask

I've been dealing with it but like forcing another hyper fixation lmao which you know doesn't work for everyone but like hey join me in booster gold and blue beetle brain rot!! It's super easy to not talk about marvel if all i want to talk about is other characters from dc and indie comics. I'm not buying marvel comics anymore because I've gotta save my money to buy the current blue beetle run. I can't post marvel fics right now, I'm working on boostle fics and I'm hoping that if I scream loud enough about them I'll have convinced enough people to read their comics and they'll have 1000 fics on ao3 by the end of the year

To some extent I still think about the characters in marvel that I hold dear, I'm still doing fandom for them through discord and continuing fics and i still reblog art on here. I do this because the cultural capital of those actions are negligible that the marvel brand and disney company really gaining nothing for it and i truly believe that all art needs to be discussed and thought about especially when the creator is problematic and like deeply involved in politics. I'm still thinking and talking about marvel because the space i gave it in my heart and brain never goes away and like quitting cold turkey this thing that's been in my life since i was 8 isn't super attainable. but I'm not doing these fandom behaviors on tiktok because it's a larger platform with no nuance, a younger demographic, and it's designed to sell you things. If I talk about marvel on that platform, aside from making people aware of the boycotts it is giving disney cultural capital and frankly it'll probably convince people to buy from the disney company. Still think deeply about these works because when we stop looking, we give ourselves permission to miss the actual messaging. when we say art has no value, we can't see it's values it portrays and we let too much shit slide.

I've found that the way i've distanced myself most from all my positive fandom feelings for marvel is through becoming more aware of the politics around comics. Getting really deep into the history of comics and the film making process of the mcu movies scratched a fandom itch in my brain, but most importantly I became so deeply and terribly aware of how the modern superhero genre has so deeply lost the plot. I gave a tedx speech about this on my campus and written a few papers about it but like Jack Kirby and Joe Simon made the character of Captain America to plead with their government to stop the oppression and genocide of their people in europe, they received death threats from nazis because they did that, despite the way people view the character as propaganda for the us military, steve rogers was first and foremost two men using fiction to beg for change and for their government to get involved to save lives. And now marvel studios is using the company they started to platform a character that represents the legitimacy of a settler state, marvel studios who is funded in part by the pentagon, who with every new movie results in increased enlistment in the military, is platforming a character that declares the right of israel to exist as it does now with the same tactics and symbols kirby and simon used to create a character that was made to stop genocide. It just makes me sick. It is a complete and total pervasion of who kirby and simon were and what they stood for. I respect their work too much to continue buying from marvel studios in any form and i can't stomach any of the new storylines the comics are telling because this isn't what comics are supposed to be

I think about this spider-man costume that was found in the rumble of a home in Gaza (link to original post) and i think about how these stories connect us, how there was a little boy who need to feel strong and powerful who wanted to be a hero and he was killed for the crime of being born Palestinian but he's no different than any other child i've loved in my life. and this multibillion dollar company funded his death, sanctioned the idea of it through the art they create, and my tax dollars fund every step of it. When I look at Spider-Man, a character who i grew up with, I can feel only grief and rage.

Generally if you want to use my art anywhere PLEASE ASK ME FIRST!!! I'll most likely say yes I just want to know about it. If you're reposting it on a different platform or sharing it on Discord or whatever I'd also appreciate if you could tell me what other people are saying about it or send me a link to the post. Also free to use as pfps or whatever as long as you ask first. and unless I say otherwise (there are some things I don't want my name attached to yknow) ALWAYS MAKE SURE TO CREDIT ME!!! ("genericdragon on Tumblr" will suffice). If it's art that I made specifically for you you're free to use it anywhere without asking just remember to credit me.

Please don't edit my art in any way, shape, or form, aside from maybe cutting out the background or whatever. (including drawing on top of it, changing colors, etc)

You're allowed to trace/heavily reference my art for practice (don't know why you'd want to tho) but DO NOT POST IT ANYWHERE OR USE IT FOR ANYTHING ELSE PLEASE.

Unless we're very close friends/mutuals do not expect free art from me. You can commission me on artistree or follow me on artfight (<- you are VERY likely to get free art this way.) That being said, there are a few story related things that I'm not comfortable sharing with other AUs, but it's usually stuff that I don't post on Tumblr so you probably don't know abt it anyway. Just ask me if you're unsure. However I will also ask that you don't create an entirely new backstory for them if you're putting them in your own AU.

I can't stop you from taking inspiration from my designs but please don't just change a few things from my design and call it your own. They're not technically my original characters but I am still very attached to my humanizations and I'm not comfortable with them being modified like that. I'm glad that ppl like my designs but I don't want them to run too far away from me until they're not mine anymore yknow?

Hi. This may be a weird question but unfortunately, I have seen it in other servers and it killed the vibe.

Are people who join the server equal? Too often there is favoritism towards more known artists/writers. And adding to that, this tends to lead to favoring certain OCs/ships from said creators while new/not well-known artists/writers get sidelined.

Speaking of OCs. If they are not ignored, they are favored when they have a visual representation like art. Written-only OCs have a hard time garnering attention.

And I mentioned ships because, on many occasions, people tend to see/care only for one ship. Especially when it is OC x Canon. Other ships with the same canon character but different OC tend to get ignored.

The Darksiders fandom is small and building a community is difficult. And I would love to see the server succeed.

No no, this is an excellent and valid question. Thank you so much for bringing this not only to my attention, but to everyone elses because I think this is important to address before the server is up and running.

My intention with the discord server is that ALL are equal. There is a place for readers, ocs, selfships and artists - new/not well known and well known alike. You are all welcome and equal. A major focus of mine is achieving community growth and bonding where members can share their stories, ships and ocs, ideas, headcanons, silly memes and art and such in a healthy, thriving environment.

As a big priority, I aim to keep members safe and comfortable, ensuring that they feel welcomed and secure. As really the only official mod of the server, I ask that members look out for each other and if anyone experiences any sort of negativity, they bring it to the support channel/to my attention immediately.

I will not tolerate a space where others are put down, shamed, disregarded or blatantly sidelined because someone doesn’t like that this member also ships their oc/self ship with the same canon character as them. That is NOT the community I’m making. Just like how kids share their toys — as mature adults I think we can all follow the same courtesy.

And members who don’t have any artwork of their own oc/s should not be treated lesser. Their creation and ocs live on through words which is an art of its own.

I understand that there are people out there who may have their favourite ships, however, I ask that they give themselves a chance to explore this horizon if they plan on being a member in this server. This is a space to encourage one another, not to pick favourites and then discard everyone else in the server.

Once you get that studio member role, you’re one of us. You’re equal to every other member. Your personal ships, your thoughts, art and ideas - all of that which you want to bring to the community - is valid to be there.

Thank you again for bringing this to the frontline, I appreciate that you’ve come forward and let this be known. This will be my first ever community to create and mod and I'm pouring my heart, soul and love into it to make it the best it possibly can be for everyone and I also hope that this server can succeed.

This is a big undertaking for me personally but I really want this. I want a place where people can not just feel like they belong, but where they know they belong. I have only met a small segment of this fandom’s community mainly through Tumblr and Ao3, but this server is for anyone who is interested in what it represents for its members.

This is a hub where those segments on differing platforms can come together as equals.

For new listeners welcome, welcome to the show. The kaisoo fic podcast is a space where we discuss literature found in the kaisoo world. Where we have authors on the show to give them a platform to talk about their writings and journey as an author in the fandom.

This episode there will be some reference to the previous episode with rainepaige08. If you have not, do check that episode out as well, but this episode can also be a stand alone episode, just that listeners who have gone through the previous episode with Raine will be able to see more or less where we are coming from. Raine is also the very first guest we had on the show, so having this episode together again is very meaningful.

Welcome Raine, thank you for becoming a returning guest on the kaisoo fic podcast show. We are very pleased to have you with us this evening.

Before we begin proper, do you have any opening comments you would like to make?

Thank you for having me here again and hopefully I’m more relaxed now than last time.

Pleasure is mine, i know we are more comfortable now that we have talked a bit more both on the twitter dms and discord voice chats, so I do agree that this episode will be more enjoyable as well.

Raine. yes? Shall we dive into the episode! We shall! We start with the fic.

Intro to Fic

Chasing Summer Skies is celebrating its 5th year anniversary since it was first posted. Congratulations on that Raine! Chasing Summer Skies is an ongoing, currently at the point of recording it has 11k words in 3 chapters on ao3. For those eager to go through the fic, it is complete as a tweetfic on Raine’s twitter account, rainepaige08.

I think what is really precious about moving tweetfics to ao3 is that there seems to be more flexibility and leeway for there to be commentary on the setting, premise and perspectives. Mainly because of the word limit on each tweet, you are sort of confined to the few sentences. So first question of the evening, I would like to hear from you and your choice of transferring your Chasing Summer Skies to ao3. Why did you make the decision to move?

In the past, the decision was just to transfer it word per word from the tweetfic for me to have a copy of my story since it is hard to scroll on the app. But I tried to reread it and with the improvements on my writing over the course of 5 years, I realized there are scenes I could have written better hence why new narrations are added.

Indeed it is hard to scroll on the app. Fic reading becomes more satisfying and the storyline becomes more put together in full potential on ao3 as compared to it being as tweetfics. But being on the app does have its merits as well, especially in gaining reactions and ending each update on the thread with a cliffhanger that makes readers eager to read the next update.

Our first episode together you mentioned you’ve been writing since your first year in collage back in 2011. So that brings us to you writing for a good 13 years. Have any other of your fics been rewritten with an updated plot as well?

A Familiar Face, which is the CEO AU, was also rewritten and new narrations were added but not to this extent. Maybe I just felt this itch when I am rereading the tweetfic after 5yrs that I want the scenes to be more vivid and their feelings to be expressed more.

Ah yes, Familiar Face, of course!

As a reader, okay ill speak for myself, this fic is hard to forget. And to me it is very heartwarming to know that you still love it enough to rewrite scenes and breathe new and more life into it.

Let’s continue by talking about the tweetfic, the plot breakdown or the events that happened in the fic.

Raine, would you like to briefly talk a bit on the fic for those who may not be familiar?

Chasing Summer Skies is a story about Jongin, an event photographer and Kyungsoo, a wedding coordinator who met during Summer and had a summer love affair. However, what they didn’t know is that Jongin's girlfriend is Kyungsoo’s sister which he would eventually help plan the wedding.

What a premise to start with… by itself, even without knowing too much of the plot, you know it is gonna be angst and heartache. The question is how deep are we getting into it. More of that in a bit.

So in the first few scenes, what brings our two lovers together?

It starts with Kyungsoo finding out that his room was double booked and now occupied. But suddenly a stranger approached him and by weird fate; it was the person staying in his room. The man introduced himself as Jongin and offered that they share the room instead. That’s the starting point of how they spent the summer together and got to know each other, to which they would eventually fall in love during the short trip.

Pacing and Difference between the tweetfic n ao3

Things happen in the fic quite quickly, so much so that Kyungsoo asks himself, i quote: “Could you fall in love with someone you only met for a week?” He knows the answer but just doesn't want to admit it. With that, will the pacing change now that you're moving it to ao3? Or maybe let me rephrase - generally what is the biggest thing that readers will see differently in this 5th year anniversary of Chasing Summer Skies?

The pacing of how they fell in love would still be fast, since I wanted the readers to doubt too if it was possible to genuinely fall in love with someone in just a few weeks. I like how it begs the question if it was just a spur of the moment thing or not. What the readers will see differently in this version is how Jongin’s and Kyungsoo’s connection were built. I mentioned in one of my posts that I want to build up their happy moments before the chaos would start. So, there would be additional scenes to watch out for.

Okay good good we as readers do want to see more happy kaisoo moments. Even in the tweetfic we have happy moments in the beginning… but then after Kyungsoo’s return from the vacation, it drastically turns to, i quote what Min says in the very end of the fic that she saw the yearning, love and sadness combined when they would look at each other.

Inspiration

Now having brought up Min, a question Raine, when you first thought of the fic, what was the very first relationship dynamic you had in mind or a scene that popped as inspiration in your head? Was it Jongin and Min’s relationship or the summer fling or could be neither of the options.

My first thought was “i want a kaisoo but one of them is in a relationship” so like an infidelity fic since I want to challenge myself to something more…controversial? questionable?. Since I think the plot of Infidelity is something that is being frowned upon until now.

Next that I thought of is Min being Kyungsoo’s twin but I think there are already a lot of fics with that concept so I decided for her to be his sister instead. After that, I thought of a way for them to have a connection. I don’t want the connection that Kaisoo has to be on the summer trip so that’s when I thought of a videographer and an event coordinator and Kyungsoo being Min’s brother, she would definitely ask help plan her and Jongin’s wedding

Similar question to the one I just asked on inspiration because I do want to know a bit more on your author’s choice. When you start a story, how much is already figured out? I will break this question into two sections, one for the tweetfic and one for the ao3 version.

Inspiration - tweetfic (breakdown while writing for plot)

In our previous episode you mentioned that you had the start and ending in mind specifically for the CEO AU and this fic. As you were writing the tweetfic, what kind of outline did you have or were you exploring their backgrounds, relationship dynamics and oncoming conflicts at the same time as you write?

It was quite different from the CEO AU since I only have the start in mind and up until Chanyeol was introduced. I also have in mind what the ending is and the character’s relationship dynamics and major conflicts. but everything after that point, I would then gauge the reader’s reaction on the twitfic. Part of it was actually if the fic would still be a kaisoo end game or would it change to chansoo since there are a handful of readers that are question the flow of the story at the middle.

What was in mind was just the beginning of the fic to the first time Chanyeol was introduced. And the ending. Possible relationship dynamics and major conflicts.

Because it was a tweetfic and there are live reactions, it is a good gauge of their feedback. There was a point where readers started to question if the fic was going to change to chansoo end game, which got some readers fired up and questioning.

What were those relationship dynamics or conflicts that you prioritized to push the plot?

though i did get a lot of feedbacks from people, I still decided on a kaisoo ending. Another would be the decision to push through with Min and Jongin getting married.

In the tweetfic version of Chasing Summer Skies, were there any specific moments you wanted to see expanded on or did you see potential generally throughout the fic that you thought could be explored in more detail?

What I noticed first is how little are Jongin’s pov on the fic so I wanted to build Jongin’s character at the start since I think that’s the portion I failed to expound on the tweetfic since it is mostly Kyungsoo’s pov. Wanted to expand on Jongin’s POV because there were a lot of negative views on Jongin. Did not to justice to why Jongin did certain things to kaisoo’s relationship because it was mainly Kyungsoo’s POV so there was no insights to Jongin’s actions.

We do indeed see more of Jongin’s POV already in the first chapter where he goes out for his run and admires Kyungsoo’s sleeping face.

Another portion I wanted to expound on is chansoo’s relationship and the difference between Kyungsoo when he is with Jongin vs with Chanyeol.

That is a lot of moments for us to discover, we are very excited for that.

Inspiration - ao3 (develop scrapped or new plot devices)

You did mention in our previous episode that you had the start and ending in mind but changed the scenes halfway and even scrapped some ideas. With you now transferring the fic on ao3, are you planning to develop all the scenes you scraped in the tweetfic or are there new points of the narrative you would like to bring to the readers?

One scene I scraped which was added is Kyungsoo visiting Jongin’s workroom (this would be updated this week). It would give the readers a little backstory for Jongin and how he loves his work.

Min “photography is a hobby” but as Kyungsoo visits Jongin in his workroom, readers get to see that Jongin genuinely loves his job.

When you mentioned you will be adding how readers will see Jongin loving his job and Kyungsoo witnessing it, I don't know why but a moment that comes to mind is a scene a week before the wedding. Min invites Kyungsoo to her birthday dinner where Jongin defends Kyungsoo against his homophobic father. Somehow thinking about the dinner scene, and hopefully when reading this new scene, we get to see how kaisoo are able to relate to each other on a very vulnerable level. They feel like they are both misunderstood and undervalued. Kyungsoo with his father’s disapproval and Min’s distaste towards Jongin’s work.

Another new scene would be with chansoo since before I am scared of building up their part in the story since I know most of my readers have preference over kaisoo, but I feel like that scene would be essential to add.

For the plot, I definitely do agree that chansoo moments are essential to add. Right now with the tweetfic it may seem like just kaisoo moments with a sprinkle of chansoo. The nature of this fic… it is heavy angst for kaisoo, it would definitely be nice to see more light hearted moments for chansoo to balance things out. Because we were hinted at the fact that chansoo do spend a lot of time together, so it is definitely important to add.

I will talk more about kaisoo vs other ships in fics on the next episode for the one year anniversary of the podcast because this is something I'm passionate about, basically championing for fic writers. But for now i would just like to say that it is sad to know that people have a strong preference for kaisoo so much so that they will not accept any other pairing… But it is for the plot… Having as you said, Raine wants to expound on the difference between Kyungsoo when he is with Jongin vs when he is with Chanyeol. Chansoo’s dynamics is dramatically significant to bring the plot forward. And it also makes kaisoo’s relationship all the more precious and important for Kyungsoo.

Impact

The things that happen between Kyungsoo’s return and Min’s passing, can be quite… distressing. Mainly because there are many times where we readers… okay for me at least, would want closure for Kyungsoo, but then a misstep happens. They fall back on each other, then they are back to square one again where Jongin is with Min and Kyungsoo is heartbroken. It is very anxiety inducing because how many times can his heart take this sting of rejection only to be met with desperation to want to love and be loved again? That is my feelings as a reader, but share with us how writing out these scenes impact you in any way?

I can actually still recall how emotional I felt writing those scenes. and as a person who easily cries, yes I am crying while writing most of those scenes. I wanted the emotions to be felt through the words and I wanted the readers to feel the same frustration that Kyungsoo feels as his heart is being pushed and pulled and played over and over again. I want every heartache to feel raw and relatable.

You want every heartache to feel raw and relatable, Raine, what insights have you gained upon writing Chasing Summer Skies?

I learned from this fic that I love writing emotional scenes. Emotional struggle of the characters. I also started to build more complex characters like Jongin that there are reasons why people did what they did.

I like that, the emotional struggle where there are complex human emotions. It is true to life. There are choices taken because of miscalculated steps and different priorities.

People disagreed with what Jongin did, but I also learned to not be pressured by expectations of the readers and to stick to your end goal.

The main struggle I had was with chansoo’s relationship. On the surface level they may seem happy, but if you dig deeper, we see that there are different types of love and you meet people at a certain part of your life to help you navigate through it. I think that is what Chanyeol is to Kyungsoo. He made Kyungsoo feel safe. He was the one who tried to push Kyungsoo forward when he was lost.

But at the same time, you see Kyungsoo going back to Jongin over and over again and at some point Chanyeol realized that needed to be the one to put an end to their relationship.

Chanyeol’s intention on sticking around Kyungsoo was to put a genuine smile back on Kyungsoo’s face. But I sometimes cannot believe that they almost got married, but again, as you said, different types of love. With Chanyeol it is always safe, but it was not the love that Kyungsoo wanted. Chanyeol needed to be the one to end things especially after it was confirmed through Baekhyun’s intervention that Kyungsoo does not love Chanyeol.

What scene are you most excited for readers to read? If you have, could you read to us listeners a snippet of it?

The extract i will be reading is the part of the wedding in Kyungsoo’s POV

The music played and Kyungsoo watched as Jongin walked towards where the officiant was.

Just one look. Just look at me once, Jongin, and it would be my cue to stop this. Please..

Kyungsoo told himself as the other entourage walked on the aisle. It was Min's turn and Kyungsoo fought the urge to look away as he saw Jongin smiling at his bride.

The ceremony started and the couple exchanged their vows, but Kyungsoo still waited.He still hoped for that sign. For that one glance from Jongin.

But it never came.

The ceremony was concluded and Jongin and Min are now announced as husband and wife.

But Kyungsoo still waited.

Until the reception, Kyungsoo's eyes never left Jongin. Even when Chanyeol checked if he's okay, he still stared at him. Hoping, still hoping, that Jongin would look his way.

The reception was about to end with Min and Jongin leaving for their honeymoon.

Kyungsoo finally gave up.

He said thank you to his assistant and said sorry that he needs to leave the venue. He walked towards Chanyeol and tapped the man's shoulder. The musician looked at him and nodded as he already knew what it meant.

As Kyungsoo walked towards the hotel, he failed to see Jongin looking back at him before the man left.

One last look.

I want to repeat this line for my own sake because it is just devastating: Kyungsoo fought the urge to look away as he saw Jongin smiling at his bride.

A very definitive moment for Kyungsoo happens right before the extract you just read, where chansoo are in the hotel and Chanyeol comforts Kyungsoo by saying he does not have to be at the ceremony, but Kyungsoo persists on and says: "No. I want him to take that path while knowing I am there witnessing it. That even after knowing that it would shatter me, he would still do it."

That moment is an example of how their love is a love at the wrong time.

Yea, and this happens after Kyungsoo’s proposal to: "Meet me at the airport at 4am tomorrow. I'll book a flight. I'll do anything. I'll find a way to escape."

Kyungsoo looked at Jongin's eyes and held his cheek as he added,

"Just say yes."

This is his final ace. The last card that Kyungsoo could gamble on.

Raine, what a line… what a moment, desperate but hopeful Kyungsoo… it is too hard to read.

It shows that Kyungsoo did all that he can for Jongin to pick him… despite all that, Jongin still chose to be with Min.

And hence Kyungsoo is persistently fighting the urge to look away from Jongin because he wants Jongin to take the path knowing that it will shatter Kyungsoo’s whole being. And Min knows that. Wait no she knew after they got married and when Kyungsoo left the country. When Jongin heard that Kyungsoo left, he broke down and told Min everything about their relationship.

I just want to remind readers that Min understands why Kyungsoo wants to stop the wedding but she also knows that Kyungsoo will choose Min’s happiness because she is the only one that understands him in their family.

A fic that i always want to go back to when i need a good cry from life.

Wow, an angsty fic as a comfort fic. But yea i do agree we need to cathartically express our feelings in reading a good fic that knows how to make us cry.
