my ACEN tip gimmick has been fulfilled, aaand i got a little carried away with it. I haven't had time to draw for myself (or at all, really??) in like two weeks, i needed to Doodle and Have Fun. ... also, i did not think he would get so many donuts. people understand the value of giving treats to fictional characters :) its what he deserves
also shoutout to snazzyskeletons who had the same Tip Theme i did. we took pictures with our tip jars together. they are adorable v

So since 4sd this week I have been thinking about my favorite critical role quote.
"It's about a very long story and we are, even you, a tiny part of it."
Which is from campaign one episode 56 (near the end I could look up the time stamp but I am lazy). It's a Percy quote and it is a CRIMINALLY under rated cr quote cause have you ever heard anything more perfectly describing critical role? Any way my point is I love this quote and it is never included in cr quote lists AND IT SHOULD BE. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

me when i thought i liked star stable more when it was older and of shittier quality because that's when everyone said it was better and then i took time away from the fandom space and realized i was a) in like third grade when the game was "old" b) genuinely love the new updates, quests, and horses

- the first is an ask about mad dog, when there were still only 3 fics in english for the choi kang-woo/kim min-joon pairing, mine included (mine, actually, being the first one in english); the two characters kiss in every single one of these fics.
- the second is a conversation in the replies of an mctna post about a banghwi scene. while the ship is personally not my cup of tea, it is an excellent and strongly canonically implied pairing and it makes me angry on behalf of the amazing, extremely talented authors who do write fic for this underrepresented ship. whether the complaint is about the first few pages of bangwhi fics (which only span two pages) or the first few pages of mctna fics in general, i don't recall a single one of them being objectively 'bad' - just bc it might not be your cup of tea and some of the tags might squick you out, doesn't mean it's 'bad'. and even if it was, who's to say the fics aren't still someone's favorite, akin to a gem they've found bc they were looking exactly for a story like this for years?
i'm just... so tired. why do ppl do this? why do they love to dunk on others' fics and hard work so much? do they think that tumblr is magically devoid of ao3 fic authors and that we won't stumble on these conversations and disparaging comments about our fics, especially if the posts can be found in the very public main tags?
not to mention that the fandoms in question are already extreeeeemely tiny and the fic for them is already very rare. can't we even muster up some bare modicum of fandom etiquette and respect in small fandoms like these? i would go on to say that while it's perfectly fine to not like a fic and talk about it, these are conversations that should have been best kept in private DMs - or at least outside of the main tags.
the thing is it's super, super discouraging and does the very opposite of making more ppl feel inclined to write for your favorite small fandom or rare pair. with some ppl tending to be so harsh and judgemental (and honestly entitled) when it comes to fic, it doesn't surprise me at all that so many ppl are so insecure about their writing that they don't dare to post their fics for fear of not being 'good' enough. i find that really sad since fic is all about having fun and doing something you love and sharing that joy with others!! it's not about being objectively 'bad' or 'good'. and tbh i've never read a fic that i can't say at least one (1) good thing about.
so why don't we do more of that instead of complaining about fic where everyone can see it?

Getting real sick and tired of the fact that I can't just click on the tag for a F/F ship and get fics actually focusing on that ship on Ao3.
You always gotta waste time going to the filters because otherwise the tag is going to be completely clogged up with bland M/M fics that clearly don't give a shit about the F/F ship I actually want to read about but felt the need to tag it anyway.

It's crazy how both Adrestia and Almyra have just as much (if not less) worldbuilding and development as the neutral countries in Fates; even moreso when the latter are canonically complete fodder to Nohr and Hoshido, are mostly irrelevant to the actual war, and are just there to give Corrin and their comrades something to do while they travel to Nohr/Hoshido/Valla to put an end to the main war, while the former are meant to be two of the biggest and most important players in the main war and are shown putting up a good fight against the other major countries
Why do you think so many people developed intricate headcanons about Adrestia and Almyra anon -
it's precisely because they are supposed to be "big player" important nations (let's say compared to Albinea) but their games dgaf about them bar some "in Adrestia people love tea" low tier of development lol
All jokes aside,
Some people already said it better than I could, but in general you come up with headcanons to talk about something you really like but has many holes in the canon, that's why you can have a lot of room to come up with whatever you want (or it's easier to avoid the "not canon compliant" hammer since canon is a puff of smoke).
Hell, I took the coliseum + Rhea's Seiros the Warrior's clothes + Word of God saying Adrestia is supposed to be based on Italy with german names to come up with a general "ancient rome" aesthetic for early Adrestia in my own hcs.
Some people really developped an entire lore with languages and patterns and a lot of cultural stuff regarding Almyra - kuddos to them! - because, for a place that is often compared to "Fodlan" by Claude and serves as the basis of his character, well, the Fodlan games are... really scarce about giving us any details regarding Almyra as a country -
(and then Nopes happened - sometimes it's better for canon to remain in a perpetual foggy state than to become what Nopes did to Almyra !)
I like every breadcrumb I can find about Adrestia through the various supports, books and NPCs, but well, you can't make a decent meal out of breadcrumbs.
And Fodlan scattered so many breadcrumbs around that at first glance you expect a banquet... and then only find out that the "promised dinner" is just, well, a handful of breadcrumbs thrown here'n'there on the table.
That's why I'm so upset at the "worldbuilding" lol, it could have been so much (some breadcrumbs are tasty, where's the dish???) but we end up with... a plate of nothing.
Sure FE as a series isn't the best medium to develop and explore different countries/cultures (even if Engage tried to have the cast visit different places and talk to different people, just like Echoes where you can visit villages and talk to people living in said villages!) but FE Fodlan really dropped the bar, and unlike Jugdral, we have no Treasure Book to reveal more about the crumbs we're playing with.
So yeah, I can't really see where the "better writing and worldbuilding than Fates!!!" spiel comes from, and I say this as someone who wasn't particularly fond of FE14 lol

Navigating a slightly awkward fandom etiquette situation that I'd be interested in other folks' input on
I was a part of a really neat little gift exchange where my own prompt ended up having to be filled by a pinch-hitter, which may be one reason for the mismatch. The TL;DR is I had requested a genfic (unsurprisingly to you all, I am sure) and the gift I ended up getting was... not, and felt a bit like it veered from the prompt to additionally focus on a character I don't care as much for.
(Ultimately I am not horribly put-out because this was for a small fandom and there were a number of other works people did for the exchange that I got excited about, and also the vibes of the whole event have been lovely and kind which is why I don't want to kill that!)
My dilemma is I feel like I still ought to leave a comment on the fic -- it doesn't seem right not to on an exchange gift, especially when someone stepped up to write something last minute and I think just genuinely didn't understand my preferences. However I am still feeling a tiny bit of aromantic weariness about the situation, and feel a bit uncomfortable with that. My usual "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" fic policy is failing me here, and there are at least a few bits of it I still liked and could bring up in a comment. But it all feels a little disingenuous.
Just contemplating the best sort of comment to leave that won't hurt the writer's feelings and even expresses some gratitude for stepping up at the last minute (since I'm sure there are other folks getting excited about the story, and I like that thought) but also doesn't totally misrepresent what I am About in fandom, you know?
