overall a lot better than i was expecting for a season 2. esp bc i feel like s1 ended at a fine point and there was no need for a second season. this was still fun though

What if there was a K-pop based game? Not a Just Dance K-pop edition, but an actual game? What would the gameplay be like? Would you play or buy it? And who should be the first cover idol?

This honestly shouldn't be something I put so much thought into, and it's only scratching the surface, but there's so much material and concepts you could do with a K-pop based game. Other suggestions have already been tackled and explained tactfully, such as gameplay and Career/Story Mode, so here's a list of things and ideas I would like to see in a hypothetical game:

Cover idol:

I think if it’s not BTS or Blackpink, especially for the first game, you’d cause a huge riot. They are far and away the two most popular and recognized K-pop groups of all time, and are basically most Westerners’ gateway to the genre. It makes sense why not them, they’re currently inactive (esp. since BTS are in the military), but I’d argue that you should easily make two cover versions of the game—one with BTS, the other Blackpink. If it has to be one active idol, you could go with many options: Wonyoung, Karina, An Yujin, Yeji, Chaewon, Winter, Seulgi, Sana, Miyeon. It would be cool to have a foreign idol, but it has to be a Korean first, and I’d personally go with Wonyoung. For the Legacy/Legend Editions, I’d pick IU.

MyGM:

You could go three ways with a MyGM mode. Group based, company based, and music show based. All three will have similar gameplay elements, but have different ways and strategies to go about managing a successful group, company or music show. 

MyIdol could be you as a singular group’s manager, scheduling comebacks, concerts, days-off, and so on during a calendar year. There’s a stamina/morale system to balance between working them for profit/popularity and resting them so that none of the members get disgruntled and leave or be sidelined. You’d also have to make decisions for the members’ solo opportunities, line distribution, and more.

MyCompany is larger in scale—you now run an entire company or sublabel (good luck if you’re running Cube or SM lmao). You have to manage every artist’s comebacks and schedules, or else they leave or demand a contract termination. An addition from MyIdol is the ability to sign other idols/artists/trainees on the free agent market and you can add them to existing groups or create new groups with your current roster. 

MyMusicShow would basically be WWE 2K’s MyGM. You’re in charge of a music show/Korean TV station like KBS’ Music Bank or SBS’ Inkigayo and you have to compete with other networks for the best ratings of the week throughout a calendar year. You can negotiate exclusive contracts with other agencies so that their groups can only appear on your programs, as well as managing set designs/TV booking (who wins on your show)/screentime for the artists on your show. 

Universe Mode:

What it says on the tin: you have control over the entire industry and decide who are the top dogs, create special collaborations, send groups on international stages, etc.

Showcase Mode:

Depends on who’s the cover idol: you basically replay some of their most iconic/legendary stages throughout their career. If it were someone like Wonyoung for example, it would include her Very Very Very performance from PD48, that one Love Dive baseball stage, K-Pop Flex 2022, her 2022 Melon Music Awards performance, and so on. You could also do one for whoever’s on the Legend/Legacy Edition cover.

Roster:

Depending on which companies are down for it, I expect all the current 4th/5th gen guys to be available from the start, while 3rd/2nd gen groups are labeled as Legends/Legacy and require some grinding to unlock (with few exceptions). Newer groups would probably be DLC or groups from prominent eras/releases (like 2018 TWICE or 2010 SNSD for example). TheLibrarian’s suggestion of having boy group/girl group only versions is also a possible option, but c’mon, if the NBA and WWE 2K games can include both their men and women’s rosters, I see no reason for the K-pop game not to do the same.

I put so much unnecessary thought into it for some reason, I even tried making concept covers of my own using my ideas and others (they're kinda bad XD). Sorry you had to read through all that.

lovely complex is a riot through and through everyone should actually read it it's funny. and i mean read it. because the anime is fun too and the ops go hard but there's a lot that wasn't adapted that i really loved in the manga. esp after the two start dating.

if you actuallt really the whole beauty and beast terrible bad boy redeemed thing and can put up with just trash guys and drama and shit then yeah, i liek boys over flowers a lot because tsukushi is that bitch and we will never be her, she's the coolest lead ever. he falls for her because she kicked him in the face. she's so cool.

i honestly can't recommend the tokyo mew mew manga over the original anime i think it's just way better paced, but it's worth it if you loved tokyo mew mew or tmmn, or if you like magical girls in general. a classic.

but, as far as a larger project, that's kinda a funny story lmao. technically, no but tangentially yes i'm working on something riot grrl related. so last summer when where are your boys tonight was released I kept being frustrated by this common rhetorical thread in written reviews talking about the book and emo and payne's focuses; most of the articles would link Jessica Hopper's 2003 piece Emo: Where the Women Aren't. which is fine- its a good zine piece! but i felt like (1) that was as far a people would engage with the topic of women in the scene- linking a decades old, deeply personal story of isolation and NOT ENGAGING WITH IT AT ALL they'd be like "cool knocked talk about emo's misogyny in vague terms off the checklist, moving on" and (2) um there were a lot of women mentioned and interviewed for payne's oral history, they were just photographers! record label employees! and, very tellingly imo, non-frontwomen. and to meeee that felt emblematic of this belief that somehow hayley williams was like the first woman involved in third wave emo- she broke some kind of glass ceiling. and like obv, on a public facing level her involvement is incredibly important but! that's just not true lmao, esp when we talk about the underground. esp when we talk about women who were drummers, guitarists, keyboardists, ect ect- most people when they listen to a band automatically assume, unless the vocalist is a woman, that the band is all dudes. like thats just the reality. so anyway, in an effort to challenge this idea that women weren't involved i started building an archive of like, every band i could find post-rev summer with a woman in the band (or as a featured performer. or a live touring musician) as like, literal proof.

but, so the reason im reading abt riot grrl lmao- jessica hopper (whose work ive tried to engage with outside of one like 3 page article she wrote in 2003) was a riot grrl and, honestly, the riot grrl "canon" of musicians has, i think, affected our retrospective understanding of women in music (positively and negatively). so im trying to actually read more about that perspective and history. which is fun! i like a lot of these bands. sometimes. and riot grrl has a huge dc connection, which is also significant when you think about post rev summer punk music and the shape of post-hardcore (ive seen people argue that riot grrl is its own arm of post-hardcore which i do kinda vibe with- but post genres are notoriously vague and a little useless so idk!) anyway long story short im researching :)

riot grrrl as a music genre frustrates me so much…..like there is so much potential there in the punk roots & exploring women’s frustration & anger w their oppression plus the way that women in the 90s were using it as a way to organize and share feminist thought like they hadn’t since 2nd wave feminism ended and yet soooo much of it is choice feminist and individualist which just dilutes all of it ESP if u look at more modern day riot grrrl which doesn’t explore women’s oppression so much as it does just promote choice feminism (not every band obvs but the more well known ones yes). it’s just like how are you going to create this genre of music that calls out women’s oppression and women’s issues and then also use the same genre to essentially say that femininity is not oppressive to women and that it’s empowering……..i just feel like riot grrrl was a great opportunity for women to actually reject femininity and they not only didn’t do that but overall blamed misogyny for the mocking of femininity rather than realizing that femininity was invented very much to mock women (even more so now)…….basically riot grrrl is extremely hit or miss for me lmao
