Note: the times when some bladers meet their bey Spirits for the first time are what count as that spirit's debut.

Each opening would have different scenes from the original, but while I can draw I can't animate whatsoever, nor do I have time to draw an entire opening. So use your minds to imagine alternate scenes for the opening.

48 - Decisive Battle! The Quarter-Finals! -> (Free vs. Shu. vs. Lui vs. Boa [IBC: Quarter-Final -> Free (6) = Shu (6) > Lui (5) > Boa (2)]**) -> {Lúinor debuts, Boa tells Valt that Theodore is Ashtem and that the tournament was made to perfect Spryzen Requiem in order to eventually sell it and Shu off as a living weapon to a mysterious partner from a bey club called Inferno (its Arthur Peregrine [OOC: this is foreshadowing]), Boa reminisces about how he made it past being an ordinary Snake Pit background member to one of the world's best through sheer willpower, Lúinor ringing out Fafnir in the first round of the 3-round battle causes Lui to start becoming overconfident, Boa/Balkesh manage the previously unthinkable to burst Spryzen in the first round, Free remembers his previous defeat to Lui which made him decide to take training seriously again, Free uses his full power for the first time but begins to show signs of pushing himself too hard, Free creates a new move called Nothing Break, Free gets his revenge on Lui and reclaims his title of world's best blader, Spryzen shatters Lúinor, Spryzen takes revenge on behalf of Shu for all those times Lui wiped the floor with him including when he gave Shu his eye scar, Lui is left all but humbled by the battle's end and especially by his loss to a Spryzen-possessed Shu, Free/Shu qualify for the semi-finals, Lui meets Lúinor for the first time though Lúinor is bisected, Lui discovers how fun battling an opponent on his level is, Lúinor shares one of Lui's iconic laughs before finally dying, Lui tells Lúinor that he's proud of it for how bravely and hard it fought, Shu insults Lui's skill ticking him off and prompting him to swear to give Shu the beating Lui believes he deserves}

49 - The Fierce Four! Battle of Destiny! -> (Norman defeats Shu [Flashback], Lui loses to Tess [Flashback], Valt loses to Kurt [Flashback], Kurt vs. Norman vs. Tess vs. Valt [IBC: Quarter-Final -> Valt (5) > Kurt (4) > Norman (3) = Tess (3)]***) -> {Kurt rallies his followers to support his charge to prove that he is still the greatest blader, Tess saves Norman from Theodore's wrath, Norman ponders why Tess/Valt get under his skin so much, the mental shells of Kurt/Tess both begin to crack after the first round, Kurt uses his full power for the first time during the second round, Kurt throws Valtryek's performance tip to Valt instead of trying to crush it signalling a moral change for the better after the second round, Kurt declares that Valt has earned his full attention and respect as the former world champion, seeing even the formerly stone-cold Kurt develop a soft spot for Valt makes Tess seriously rethink her stance on him, Tess realises Valt is a genuine friend to Shu and the others during the third round and accepts that she isn't always right, Valtryek reaches its ultimate potential against Orichalcum in the third round, Valt and Tess reconcile with Tess telling Valt that he's the only one who can help Shu save himself, Norman remembers when Boa left Snake Pit and resolves to do the same, Tess leaves Raging Bulls, Valt/Kurt qualify for the semi-finals, Kurt tells Valt/Tess that they and any current/future friends are welcome in his underground base at any time, Free handpicks Valt to be his semi-final opponent}

50 - Breaking Point! Bursting Through! -> (Shu defeats Kurt [IBC: Semi-Final]) -> {Khalzar debuts, Raul tells Sol that Kurt is likely the best blader in terms of sheer power at this point, Shu is forced to resort to strategy to overcome Kurt, Kurt meets Khalzar for the first time, Spryzen fails to shatter Khalzar which Kurt happily mocks him for, Kurt fully commits to changing his ways and re-entering the blading world}

51 - One's Own Path! Fafnir vs. Valtryek! -> (Free loses to Valt by default [IBC: Semi-Final -> Score at time of forfeit: DFA 2-2 SVA], Valt vs. Shu continued [IBC: Final]) -> {Fafnir debuts, Gabe/Naoki/Jin/Orochi/Akira/Ben/Hoji make their Evolution debut, Free meets Fafnir for the first time, Free is convinced by Kristina to forfeit with over-exertion injuries and has to be carried off on a stretcher, Free thanks Valt while on the stretcher for pushing him to use his full power and admits that he now sees blading as fun, Beigoma Academy and Valt's family arrive to cheer him on and help him train, Free realises his teammates genuinely care about him as if he were a family member, Free apologises to Sol for pushing himself too hard and entrusts Valt with defeating Shu, Theodore finds out that Spryzen has completely possessed Shu's body and is exuberant that the Requiem Project has gone better than he ever hoped}

52 - Enter The Final! A Champion Is Crowned! -> (Valt defeats Shu [IBC: Final], Valt defeats Shu [Flashback], Lui defeats Shu [Flashback], Shu defeats Norman) -> {Fubuki debuts, all the IBC/Beigoma bladers and Valt's mother/siblings come to watch the final, Valt meets Spryzen, Valt realises mid-battle that Spryzen has possessed Shu, Valt wins the International Bladers Cup and becomes the new world champion, Shu briefly takes back control of his body/mind and finally admits that he would never be able to forgive himself if he ever lost to Valt, Shu takes the chance Valt gave him and frees himself from Spryzen's possession, Shu leaves Snake Pit, Valt/Shu become friends again, Shu finds out that Norman was Gold Eye, Norman requests a rematch with Shu to see what he is truly like now that both are out of the Snake Pit, Theodore admits defeat and revokes his plans but warns Kristina that he will return, Shu becomes Fubuki's mentor, Valt's time as main protagonist ends}

Note: 5 of my OCs in chronological order of meeting C.J.S. after his 'being able to be himself' revelation over the course of a few months - the stoic bodyguard-in-training Esmeralda Petersburg, the disciplinarian Tess Dileva, the poetic Kirumi Silkenstar (introduced in later season), the spunky wannabe witch Karaina Caulton (introduced in later season) & the highly introverted loner Suki Ryushima - are derived from and inspired by existing OCs found on (y/n) x yandere quizzes on Quotev that I took a liking to thanks to the story/characters/detail/etc., like how much of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is inspired by Western songs. This includes their personalities. I took 5 such quizzes honestly answering the questions posed based on my personality and that of Clarkov Sahaidachny/Furutani, my first and main OC, which are very similar in most ways but very different in some areas. These 5 were the results. As for the dere sides, they start out full on and become more mentally sound as time goes on. That part is inspired by the development of Mizore Shirayuki in Rosario + Vampire. It's how I have to do almost everything in life. Start out with a base, then slowly build it into my own thing. It's a bit annoying, but I make do with what I have. I'll leave a link to the quizzes below.

Did you see that bolshoi is touring the mariinskii 2 with Romeo and Juliet? We will get to see Sofia Valiullina, Elisabetta Nallin and Yaroslavna Kuprina back in St. Petersburg!

Yes, I did. While I think these "tours" have the potential to be creatively exciting, I find it bizarre that they would bring Lavrovksy's R&J, a ballet that is already performed in St. Petersburg to St. Petersburg. Like…what was the point? I think it would be far more exciting to bring Marco Spada, Esmeralda, the Coco Chanel ballet, or some other full-length that is not performed in St. P. That's what they did with Spartacus. Conversely, why would the Mariinsky bring Don Quixote to Moscow? Such a wasted opportunity. The only reasoning that I can come up with is that this last tour was an opportunity for Zakharova to say "goodbye" to her first theater and to do so in a role that she can still masterfully dance since she has since retired most or all of the classics. While it wasn't officially announced…how many more performances does Zakharova have left? Each one feels like it could be the last — although she looked really good in R&J, the clock is ticking. As for tours, the Mariinsky is taking Sergeev's Coppelia to Vladiovastock in the coming days, so perhaps that production will travel to Moscow eventually.

I saw a clip of Kuprina and she looked lovely. I still sigh at the "what could have been's" if she had chosen to stay with the Mariinsky. I'm curious if the change of AD will influence more Vaganova graduates to chose St.P over Moscow if given the choice. But now I'm rambling.

He hummed in response, pulling out the pan and spatula. “I dunno. With Gutierrez’s wife giving birth, I want Esmeralda to have some time with her daughter before we pull out again. I know her Samantha wants her home.”

Understood, but…what’s happening in Syria…it’s not going to get better on its own.

“I know it won’t, Nadeen. But until we get a mission from somebody overseas, we can’t exactly go out.” He pulled a few eggs from the refrigerator, cracking them on the rim of the pan, watching the yellow yolks fall in. “Besides, it’s the first week of a three-month leave.” He smirked. “Don’t tell me you’re already bored.”

Are you kidding me? Um and Ab have grounded me from flying. I’m stuck here, (Y/N).

“How is your family by the way? Wasn’t your sister attending the Cairo University?” he asked.

Yeah, and Um is so proud of her.

(Y/N) chuckled, whisking the eggs in the pan. “Someone’s jealous.”

Well, I can’t exactly tell my parents I work for an illegal black ops squad. Kinda puts dampers in relationships.

“Nadeen, we’re not an illegal squad. We’re government sanctioned.”

The fuck we are. They just don’t bother us because they know they can’t kill us all.

Grabbing the pepper, he ground some into the pan. “Jesus, take a vacation, Nadeen. Go to France or something.”

Fuck France. I’ll go to Saint Petersburg first. Oh shit, speaking of SP, have you spoken to Vitsina yet?

(Y/N) frowned, setting down the pepper grinder. “Why? Is something wrong?”

What? No. I was just wondering if you had. She really needs to get a hobby. Hey, maybe I can get her and Walker to come hang out with me at home.

“You’re not going to get Walker out of his flat, Nadeen. You know how he is when he gets on leave.”

And what about Nakamoto?

“You know they’re both paranoid. Remember to—” something clanged down the hallway and he stopped, mid-sentence, going silent.

Hello? (Y/N)? Captain, you alright?

He frowned and turned off the stove, opening a drawer at the far end of the counter. Pulling out the Glock, he cocked it and murmured, “Asghar, lemme call you back.”

Ten-four, Captain. Be careful.

The line went dead, and he crept to the edge of the doorway and paused, inhaling sharply before he peeked around the corner, gun ready. Nothing. (Y/N)’s frown only deepened as he moved down the hallway, quiet and breathless. He got to the first room in the hall, his study and he shifted against the wall, listening for movement. When he heard nothing, he moved slightly, gun pointed into the door as he swept the room. Empty.

Exhaling deeply, he started to move when he heard the noise again and he peeked out the door to his bedroom. There. (Y/N) crept along the wall again until he was at the doorway and he leaned against the frame, listening carefully. Something was in there. Something or someone, he didn’t know what, but he did know.

(Y/N) waited until the noise got closer then turned the doorway and moved in. Someone’s hand shot out, grabbing the gun and he grunted, throwing up his elbow into their jaw. The intruder cried and with their free hand, grabbed (Y/N)’s shirt and yanked; they went tumbling to the ground, the gun falling away, but he didn’t waste his chance, scrambling atop the stranger as he went for the Strider he had in his back pocket.

He flicked it out and brought it down when the person beneath him grabbed it with one hand, the other ripping off the hood he wore. “(Y/N)! It’s me!”

“Roy?”

The archer sighed and went slack beneath him. “God, yes, it’s me!”

(Y/N) relaxed and tossed the knife to the side, hanging his head down. “Jesus Fuck Roy, I thought you were an assassin.”

“Get those often?” he shot back and (Y/N) glowered at him.

“Yeah, I do actually.” He rolled off Roy and got to his feet, holding out his hand for him to take.

“God, remind me not to sneak up on you again.” He let himself be tugged up and rubbed his jaw. “I thought you dislocated my jaw for a second.”

(Y/N) shoved a finger in his face. “You’re lucky you managed to grab the gun because I almost shot your ass.” He bent down and picked up his Glock and knife, putting the latter back in his pocket after he’d flicked it shut. “Are you some kind of idiot? Why the fuck didn’t you just knock on the door? What possibly justified sneaking into a mercenary’s bedroom through the window?”

Roy shrugged. “I thought you weren’t home yet.”

He opened his mouth to retort, then shut it and nodded. “Alright, that’s actually not a terrible excuse.” Sighing, he shoved past Roy and walked down the hall into the kitchen, the archer following him. “But don’t do it again.”

“Why? Worried you were gonna shoot your boyfriend?” Roy teased, wrapping his arms around (Y/N)’s waist, nuzzling into his neck.

“Yeah, I was.” He put the gun back in the drawer and lugged the archer towards the stove where he flicked the burner back on. “Next time just text me and ask if I’m home.”

Roy hummed, pressing a kiss just above the mercenary’s collar. “I wanted to surprise you.”

“Well,surprise me you did,” (Y/N) griped. “I seriously thought I was about to have a firefight in my own damn apartment.” He paused, seeming to remember something and said, “I live in a penthouse.” Glancing at Roy, he questioned, “How the fuck did you get up here?”

“I’ve got skills, babe,” Roy grinned, waggling his brows and (Y/N) rolled his eyes before tapping the Bluetooth headset at his ear.

“Call Nadeen.” It pinged for a few moments.

Captain, you’re back. Everything good?

“Yeah,” he sighed. “Roy was in the apartment.”

You live in a penthouse? How’d he get up there?

“His ‘skills’ apparently.”

Nice. He still going around with your brother?

(Y/N) nodded forgetting she wasn’t in front of him and reclined into Roy as the eggs started cooking. “Yeah. Got a new gig as Red Hood and Arsenal.”

Roy blinked. “Wait, does your squad know…about you know…”

He waved and (Y/N) completed, “That my family and friends are vigilantes? Yeah. Why?”

“Isn’t that a breach of security?”

He snorted. “You act like my squad is friends with every government in the world, baby.” He shook his head. “I trust my team with everything. And in return they trust me with theirs.”

Aww, Captain you do care.

“Does your dad know that they know?”

(Y/N) shrugged. “Probably. But he doesn’t tell me how to live my life and I don’t tell him how to live his.” He scrambled the eggs. “Nadeen, go hang out with Vitsina for a week or two if you’re really that bored.”

She’s back in Russia right now, isn’t she?

“I think so. Said she had a loose end to tie up with Antonovich.”

Oh shit, she’s gonna fucking kill that guy. She might need air support then.

“Hence why I said go hang out with her.”

Wanna come along? You could bring your boy-toy?

“Did she just call me a boy-toy?” Roy blurted. “Excuse you, I am not a boy-toy. I am a boy-man.”

Well, from the pictures Captain’s showed us, you are in fact a boy-toy, Roy.

He blinked and looked at (Y/N). “What pictures did you show them?”

“Nothing,” he coughed. “Nadeen, shut up.”

The ones with the red lace and matching heels.

“You didn’t.” Roy breathed. “You showed them the pin-up photos?!”

(Y/N)’s mouth fell open and closed as he vaguely gestured around. “I didn’t directly show them. Nakamoto hacked my phone like the nosy asshole he is and found ‘em.”

“So that means you still showed them because you apparently didn’t stop them from seeing!”

Oh, look at that, Captain, Ab is calling me. Talk later!

She hung up on him and (Y/N) huffed a laugh, pulling the device from his ear. He set it aside and shrugged out of Roy’s arms, pulling two plates out of the cabinet beside them. He plated the food, smirking at the flush across Roy’s cheeks. “Oh, don’t tell me you’re embarrassed, baby?”

“You showed my nudes to your black ops squad. It’s hot. Ridiculously hot. But also embarrassing.”

“If it makes you feel any better, they were very impressed with them.”

Roy tried and failed horribly to hide the grin coming over his lips. “…They were?”

(Y/N) set down the plates and got up in Roy’s personal space and flirted, “Oh absolutely baby. They were so stunned at how pretty you looked all dolled up in that red teddy, your lips painted crimson.” He gripped Roy’s hips and pulled them flush together, and while Roy was about five-eleven, (Y/N) had a couple inches on him. He smirked when he felt the definition in Roy’s jeans. “Wanna know what my favorite picture is?”

Roy swallowed thickly, one hand coming to grab at the island behind him, the other grabbing (Y/N)’s shoulder. “Which—which one?”

He pressed a kiss to the underside of the archer’s jaw, trailing his lips to his ear where he breathed, “The one where you’re bent down on the bed…” he reached up behind Roy’s back and tugged at the hair at the nape of his neck. “Your ass is up in the air and...”

“Uh huh, what else?” Roy begged, hips canting forward.

“God, you’ve got that pretty red flush across your cheeks.” (Y/N) whispered. “You looked incredibly ravishing.” He breathed in Roy’s ear. “We were on that mission in Kazakhstan for two whole months and all I could think about was getting back home and drilling you into the mattress until you couldn’t walk.”

“(Y/N)…” the archer groaned shamelessly. “Babe, please.”

He smirked, pressing a kiss to Roy’s cheek. “I didn’t show them that one though,” he said, pulling away without a second thought, picking up the plates. “I kept that one to myself. It’s still in my wallet if you wanna go check. I look at it a lot.”

(Y/N) wandered towards the living room and plopped down on the couch, propping his legs up on the coffee table. He snorted when he heard Roy’s moan of frustration followed by the man stomping into the living room with the other plate in his hand, the free one adjusting the front of his jeans.

“I hate you.” He scowled, sitting on the other end of the couch. “I hate you so fucking much it’s not funny.”

(Y/N) shrugged and picked up the remote, switching the channels until he found a football game to watch. “You snuck into my penthouse and almost made me shoot you point blank.” He shot Roy a grin. “I guess we’re both doing things to each other we don’t like.”

“I thought you weren’t home!”

“Mhm. Punishment is still a punishment, baby.” He turned up the volume and dug into his eggs. “Jason know you’re in Gotham City?”

Roy swallowed the food in his mouth, answering, “Told him I was in the area.”

“You know he’s gonna wanna see you.” (Y/N) replied. “If not to hang out, to make sure you’re not into trouble.”

“Are you saying I’m trouble, babe?” Roy retorted and he chuckled.

“You’re my kind of trouble.”

The archer went silent, and his cheeks flushed. “…That was a low blow.”

(Y/N) winked. “Uh huh.” His side vibrated and he reached down, pulling his phone out.

“Who is it?” Roy asked.

“Alfred.” He slid his thumb along the bottom and put it to his ear. “Hello, you’ve reached the answering machine of your favorite grandson. How may I assist you today, grandpa?”

You’re absolutely hysterical, Master (Y/N). You should go into comedy.

“I would but it doesn’t pay that well unlike merc missions.”

Hmm…how are you today, Master (Y/N)?

He smiled. “Not too bad Alfie. Could’ve eaten a perfect parfait with fresh fruit and granola, but beggars can’t be choosers, huh?”

You did miss an excellent breakfast if I do say so myself. Nevertheless, it is Sunday morning. Shall I expect you later tonight for dinner?

“Wouldn’t miss it for the world, Alfie.” (Y/N) agreed.

Wonderful. I shall set out an extra plate in case you decide to invite Master Harper. Have a good day. Until tonight, sir.

The line clicked and (Y/N) pulled the phone from his ear, staring at it in confusion. “Babe? What’s wrong?” Roy questioned.

He shook his head. “Alfred knew you were here.”

“What? He did?”

He looked up at Roy. “Yeah…said he was going to set out an extra plate for you tonight at dinner in case you wanted to come.”

“I get to come to the Wayne Family Sunday Night Dinner? Really?” he seemed awfully excited.

“Dude, it’s just dinner.”

“That you guys do every Sunday night and don’t allow anybody to tread on,” Roy retorted with a glare. “This is special.”

(Y/N) rolled his eyes. “Are you that eager to be introduced to the family?” he dodged the pillow Roy threw at him. “But…if you wanna come, you’re free to.”

“Really?” Roy doubted. “You want me to come over? I thought you wanted to keep this quiet?”

He sighed and pulled his legs from the table, setting the plate on it. “It’s not that I want it to stay a secret. It’s just…I worry about it.”

Roy set his plate down on the coffee table and scooted close. “What about?”

“I don’t know, Roy. I’m just worried that the more people that know about us the more danger I put you in.”

“Babe…” Roy started, placing a hand on the other side of (Y/N)’s cheek so he could turn his face to the archer’s. “We both live dangerous lives. There’s always going to be danger surrounding us.”

“I know,” (Y/N) sighed, leaning into Roy’s hand. “I still worry though. About you…about us.” He met those evergreen eyes. “I’m just worried that every time I leave, it’s going to be the last time we see each other.”

Roy chuckled. “Afraid I’m going to get offed?”

“No,” he murmured, turning his lips into Roy’s palm. “That I will.”

The archer gaped at him. “(Y/N)…why haven’t you told me about this?”

“Because I’m a super soldier who was trained to keep my emotions under control by an anal retentive, over glorified kitchen scale of a father.” (Y/N) deadpanned, then heaved an even bigger sigh and rested his forehead against Roy’s shoulder. “You’ve got enough on your plate.”

“Yeah, Jaybird keeps me pretty busy with missions.”

He chuckled. “Gonna have to tell my little brother to let my boyfriend have a break.”

“Break smeak.” Roy quipped, pressing a kiss to (Y/N)’s temple. “Listen to me, you’re a strong man, (Y/N). You’re probably the best out of your family. Smart and skilled off the charts.” He ran his calloused fingers down his lover’s neck. “If anyone is going to get out alive on a mission, it’ll always be you. Always.”

He sighed, turning his nose into Roy’s neck as he whispered. “You think so?”

Roy smiled, gripping his chin lightly to pull his head up. “I don’t think so, babe. I know so.” He leaned forward and pressed his lips to (Y/N)’s. “I love you,” he murmured against the soldier’s lips. “So much.”

(Y/N) hummed and pressed a hand to Roy’s chest, shoving him backwards onto the couch and he crawled atop him. “I love you more,” he replied and pulled his shirt off his body before pressing his hand to Roy’s chest, except the archer hissed and he let up. “What’s wrong?” he worried, and he shook his head.

“Nothing.”

“Roy.” He warned, cocking a brow. “Where are you hurt?” he asked, pressing the same spot again.

“Ow! Stop that!” Roy grunted. “It’s tender.”

“What’s tender?” (Y/N) inquired and Roy sighed.

“I got a new tattoo.”

He narrowed his eyes and gazed down at him. “Of?”

“Nothing.” The archer muttered, though pink was coming across his cheeks and he sighed.

“C’mon Roy. Talk or I’ll tease it out of you.” He shot him a glare. “And you know I will.”

They stared one another down for a minute then Roy sighed and pulled his shirt off and (Y/N) peeled away the bandage. His eyes went wide when he saw the silver spartan helmet atop the black shield, the gold lettering underneath.

“Is this…”

“Your squad designation?” Roy offered. “Yeah…thought it seemed right.”

(Y/N) traced the raised flesh, eyes flashing to Roy’s when he shivered from the calloused touch. “I can’t believe you got my squads symbol tattooed on your chest.”

“You don’t like it?” he sounded hurt.

“I love it,” (Y/N) huffed, gesturing to his own tattoo on his ribs. “We match now…though you forgot to put your name inside the shield.”

“Well, I’m not technically a Spectre, (Y/N).” Roy said.

“Maybe not, but that’s still where your name goes.” He retorted and smiled. “It’s awesome, baby.”

Roy’s thumb brushed his hipbone. “So does the tattoo get me out of punishment for sneaking in?”

(Y/N) smirked down at him. “It just might.” He reached down and tugged the front of Roy’s pants. “Why don’t you show me how sorry you are for it? I just might decide to forgive you before subjecting you to dinner with my family.”

A multitude of emotions flashed through Roy’s eyes. Arousal, desire, need, and then surprise. “Oh shit, I forgot about dinner.”

“Seriously?” (Y/N) blinked, unsurprised. “God you’re such a man.” He crawled out of Roy’s lap much to the archer’s dismay and groaning.

“Where are you going?”

He paused and looked back at him. “I’m not fucking you on my couch, Roy.” He started towards his bedroom. “Hurry up or I’ll start without you.”

Roy rolled off the couch and to his feet as fast as he could.

Adelina Patti costumed as Esmeralda, in Fabio Campana’s opera of the same name, which premiered in Saint Petersburg in 1869.  Patti was unable to attend the premiere, despite the role being written with her in mind, but she was able to sing the role when the opera was produced in London at Covent Garden.

November the 14th marked the 143rd anniversary since the birth of Ekaterina Geltser (14 November 1876 - 12 December 1962).

Ekaterina Geltzer. Russian-Soviet dancer who is generally regarded as the first ‘Soviet’ ballerina. She was the daughter of Vasily Geltser, mime artist and ballet master at the Bolshoi Ballet (who also co-wrote the original libretto for Swan Lake) and studied at the Bolshoi School from 1884, graduating into the company in 1894.She took further studies with Christian Johansson and Petipa in St Petersburg. In 1896 she went to St Petersburg to dance with the Mariinsky for two years, then returned to the Bolshoi where she was promoted to first ballerina in 1901.

A stocky dancer with a robust, even heroic style, Geltser was the definitive Bolshoi ballerina in the early part of the 20th century, her forceful stage personality showcased especially in the dramatic roles of Gorsky.

She created the role of Swanilda in Gorsky's new staging of Coppélia (1905), Colombine in his Harlequinade (1907), the title role in his Salammbô (1910), Medora in his 1912 staging of Le Corsaire, and Tsar-Maiden in his Little Humpbacked Horse (1914). She also danced the traditional ballerina repertory, excelling most in the demi-caractère roles of Kitri and Esmeralda. She appeared with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in Paris in 1910; the following year at the Alhambra Theatre in London with dancers from the Bolshoi. She also appeared at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York with Mordkin's All-Star Imperial Russian Ballet, dancing Odette-Odile in the first complete Swan Lake ever seen in America (1911).

One of her most significant creations was the role of Tao-Hoa in the groundbreaking Soviet ballet The Red Poppy (1927), choreographed by her husband and stage partner Vassily Tikhomirov. She retired from the Bolshoi in 1935, although continued to tour extensively in Russia.

Marius Ivanovich Petipa (Russian: Ма́риус Ива́нович Петипа́), born Victor Marius Alphonse Petipa (11 March 1818 – 14 July [O.S. 1 July] 1910[1]), was a French ballet dancer, pedagogue and choreographer. Petipa is one of the most influential ballet masters and choreographers in ballet history.

Marius Petipa is noted for his long career as Premier maître de ballet (First Ballet Master) of the St. Petersburg Imperial Theatres, making him Ballet Master and principal choreographer of the Imperial Ballet (today known as the Mariinsky Ballet), a position he held from 1871 until 1903. Petipa created over fifty ballets, some of which have survived in versions either faithful to, inspired by, or reconstructed from the original. Among these works, he is most noted for The Pharaoh's Daughter (1862); Don Quixote (1869); La Bayadère (1877); Le Talisman (1889); The Sleeping Beauty (1890); The Nutcracker (choreographed jointly with Lev Ivanov) (1892); Le Réveil de Flore (1894); La Halte de cavalerie (1896); Raymonda (1898); Les Saisons (1900), and Les Millions d’Arlequin (a.k.a. Harlequinade) (1900).

Petipa revived a substantial number of works created by other choreographers. Many of these revivals would go on to become the definitive editions on which all subsequent productions would be based. The most famous of these revivals were Le Corsaire, Giselle, La Esmeralda, Coppélia, La Fille Mal Gardée (with Lev Ivanov), The Little Humpbacked Horse and Swan Lake (with Lev Ivanov).[1]

Many pieces have survived in an independent form from Petipa's original works and revivals in spite of the fact that the full-length ballets that spawned them had disappeared from the Imperial Ballet's repertoire. Many of these pieces have endured in versions either based on the original or choreographed anew by others – the Grand Pas classique, Pas de trois and Mazurka des enfants from Paquita; Le Carnaval de Venise Pas de deux from Satanella; The Talisman Pas de deux; La Esmeralda Pas de deux; the Diana and Actéon Pas de deux; La Halte de Cavalerie Pas de deux; the Don Quixote Pas de deux; La Fille Mal Gardée Pas de deux; and the Harlequinade Pas de deux.

All of the full-length works and individual pieces which have survived in active performance are considered to be cornerstones of the ballet repertory.

My emotional think piece whilst Notre Dame de Paris and crying and listening to the movie soundtrack

Not to be that absolute ASS BUT I HAVE TO SAY SOMETHING

I want to unearth Victor "biggest fuckboi in Paris" Hugo and beat him over the head with his own fucking shin bone for getting me so MELDRAMATICALLY IN LOVE WITH A BUILDING IVE NEVER EVEN BEEN TO.

I just finished the fifth part of Notre Dame de Paris and god I want to tell him

Even though you said :"this will kill that, the press will kill the edifice" you said that printing/press/writing killed architecture as the primary method for humanity to express/share/cement ideas for the masses and to enscribe themselves in history.

You said that the accessibility and the thousandfold architects in writers killed the edifice and in doing so became the second tower of Babel. Gutenberg's printing press became the second register of recording human thought.

Does he know that his book saved the edifice? His book instilled love for Notre Dame de Paris and restored it after centuries of mutilation and decay? HIS BOOK SAVED THE EDIFICE.

His supposed venom for architecture acted like an antidote in this one case and in this one case crippled his own argument.

Not to mention

I'd have to ask him what does he think about visual mass media becoming the third register of human thought? How would he feel if told that film and photography have killed Gutenberg? How would he feel if he know that writing had joined architecture in the grave he so cynically condemned it to.

How would he feel that visual mass media overtook the canon of his printed word. That his story has been superceded by context and reimagined several times on film? How would he feel if a a multi billion dollar American conglomerate rewrote and redistributed the story of Notre Dame de Paris and became the story in the public conscience? How would he feel knowing that Alan Menken's score is what first comes to mind first and not his words, or that of the actual edifice?

Yes all other arts are used to support architecture like masonry, sculpting, painting, and metalsmithing. But those he claims have become divorced from the edifice. They have done the same for the printing press. Being divorced from other arts those methods are no longer tethered to the recording of human thought in Hugo's mind. The author states that the exercise of architecture has become hollow without the weight of being the method with with humans record their world.

But

Unbeknownst to him they come back in other forms, in other methods, other arts to support and bolster the story and character of different facets of the story of human beings. He says architecture had died, but maybe it merely reincarnated. This new life is used to bolster another human register. If not the book of Notre Dame de Paris then the edifice, and if not the edifice than the 1939 film, if not that then the Disney version. They all congregate every now and again to support some core love and sentiment and continue to lay down the stones in a long winding and untoward present into the future.

Hugo both rails against and praises Gutenberg for the printing press. He also takes a seat amongst the writers committing this architectural murder.

But what would he say if I told him that the book exists in all it's different forms on the internet for free, and even more radical and enlightened version of free thinking. I got his book on the Gutenberg Project site where books entering the public domain are free. To quote Hugo's other french playwright counterweight "all for one and one for all". His work is up on the internet for free for all and more ironically carries the namesake of the man who he says enabled the murder of architecture.

More radical that the dogmatism of architecture, the accessible and far reaching appeal of writing, or even the new universality of the visual mass media. Is the internet the fourth tower of Babel? Or is it too early to tell if the web and social media count as just one more tier in an ever climbing skyscraper of visual mass media? What would he think of the way that we could consumed and recorded human thought when it is near effervescent in comparison to the stones that he praises? What about YouTube as a platform or Twitter? How will his story transform in this information age to bolster a cathedral bordering on eight hundred years? Where does that put us in his world view?

Although I do think these different iterations and transformations that his story has undergone would horrify him. The story's ability to stay relevant has these different methods of recording human thought to thank. Hunchback has gone through the story of the edifice, the printing press, and now visual mass media. (I'm also hardcore riffing off of Lindsay Ellis' great video that does a way better job than me expressing this.)

I think he'd be even more horrified to know that the Disney Version is so character centric that the focus if his original story has been relegated to support for the characters. In actuality, it should be the reverse, Hugo makes a whole book of a host of characters who exist to populate the cathedral. But in this day in age in the western world we are preoccupied with the power of individuals, not the towering and lofty mysticism of Catholic dogmas. The story now belongs to the characters and the individual instead of the edifice belonging to the people.

Architecture, in it's golden age according to him, was for the caste/the priest/history, and would the march of time it turned into the work of individuals and artists. And so has his own intellectual property, the public conscious does not remember ANANKE at the beginning of Notre Dame de Paris but they remember the inviduals, not the dogmas that the architecture so visibly preoccupied itself with, but with the individuals in it's story and the individuals who the story now belongs to.

What would he think?

Not once has a film adaptation, our modern human register as it were, accurately captured the story he made. Which is for better or worse, it's gone through the hands of American capitalists, movie monster buffs, and a German fleeing the Nazis.

What he would have wanted was what The Ark did for the Hermitage St-Petersburg. He wants an epic film made of one continuous shot of the arcades, cloisters, towers, and arches of Notre Dame in a succession of epochs with people milling in and out of frame in different period dress. That and a cacophony of music from the bells recorded straight from the bell towers.

Instead the dead guy got several movies about a melodrama between an ugly wretch, a Madonna whore, and a Catholic priest. And I wouldn't even say that Hugo likes his characters, more like populates the building with then. He tolerates them sometimes, sometimes he likes them, sometimes he hates them.

He writes about the burden and cruelty that Quasimodo endures but never gives him a happy conclusion, or any closure. He treats him as the public does.

His self insert character of Pierre Gringoire is infused with his dry wit, and often ridicules his own self absorbed poet's nature. He down right puts himself through the ringer and takes several too self aware jabs at himself.

He tries to make Clopin the king and noble but still puts forward this bigoted image of the Romani people. He makes him magnetic but does not feel back the thick veneer of discrimination. Why? Because Hugo makes it very clear it's about the cathedral and not the people.

Esmeralda gets the shortest end of the stick, balancing the whore/angel dichotomy equally throughout. She's made a vessel for want of the male characters and the reader. Not to mention she's not actually Romani but a poor stolen white girl who was made a part of Les Cours Des Miracles by an accident.

Frollo is strangely not as potent in this version, especially if you're coming off any of the film versions. He's austere, and the word 'learned' used over and over again, his quiet abuse masquerades as quiet charity but he is the front for a huge anti-clerical sentiment.

The individual is not Hugo's concern but the building. So I'd love to hear what he would say of what the building and the book have become.

Well, the city sure is lovely. But Anya can't help her blue eyes, fixed on all the tall structures looming over her. It's very different from St. Petersburg, and the palace, even. Paris is more stark, almost. Finally, she looks and sees a beautiful woman in colorful garb, surely a local. So Anya approaches, arm outstretched to get her attention. (hope this works!)

SHE  HAS  BEEN  TO  MANY  A  CITY,  SEEN  MANY  A  FACE.  But  it  occurs  to  her  as  she  stands  by  the  docks  and  sees  the  myriad  of  ships  that  crossed  the  seas  to  come  here  that  she  has  barely  scratched  the  surface  of  the  world.  Even  beyond  old  worlds,  whispers  from  sailors  and  merchants  and  scholars  speak  of  new  worlds  only  just  uncovered.  

Though  Paris  does  not  capture  every  element  of  these  worlds  of  course,  the  city  does  excite  the  senses  for  bringing  at  least  some  wonders  beyond  here.  She  always  sees  new  people,  new  merchandise.  It  always  interests  her  to  learn  something  new.

Then,  a  distraction.  A  lady  about  her  age  approaches,  with  striking  auburn  hair  and  sapphire  eyes,  and  she  holds  Esmeralda’s  attention.

2020: My Year in Reading

In July, I finished reading “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” by Victor Hugo (in English, as my French doesn’t stretch that far yet), which… I mean, Victor Hugo’s probably not reading this, so I think I can say comfortably that I didn’t really enjoy it. You can’t call your book “anti-racist” if you refer to a certain character more times by an ethnic slur than by her actual name. Esmeralda. She deserves better, and so does every Romani person out there. Victor Hugo has a lot to answer for, with the stereotypes his novel perpetuates, and it’s not the sort of book you should take at face value. Read it, but, for God’s sake, read it critically. I’m glad to have got it off my reading list.

Of course, I keep track of the news, so it didn’t slip by me unnoticed that Tr*mp was suing his own niece, Mary, for the way her memoir portrayed him. “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man” is a harrowing read, but explains so much, and is one I’ve recommended to just about everyone I know at this point. [Incidentally, “this point” is actually “the evening of 9th January 2021”. I woke up early this morning to news of the permanent Twitter ban and had a little celebration before I went back to sleep.]

Somehow, I managed to make it all the way to July before I finished reading “The Haunting of Hill House” by Shirley Jackson, to which audiobook I listened as I packed up my things, ready to move to Southampton. I found it hard to get into, but really enjoyed it. I also read “The Taken Girls” by GD Sanders, and “Trail of Lightning” by Rebecca Roanhorse, which were both very exciting.

My favourite book from July, though, was one I read in that revolting heatwave, where it was too hot in our living room to move. I spent the whole day sipping water from a litre-jug, trying to keep as still as possible, and racing through “The Witches of St Petersburg” by Imogen Edwards-Jones, which is amazing. It’s not just that I’m so interested in the last years of Romanov rule in Russia that I’ll stare for hours at a stack of hay, provided Anastasia looked at it once; the book is genuinely good, and I’d gladly shove it in everyone’s faces if it weren’t quite rude to do so.

My sister recommended I read “Unwind” by Neil Shusterman, but warned me that, “It’s quite hardcore body-horror. It’s absolutely terrifying. Apparently, there are four sequels, but I can’t bring myself to look.” So, of course, I looked. What a brilliant book! I got through “Unwind”, the first in the series, in a single day, and read “Unwholly” the next. She’s right – it’s absolutely terrifying and should probably not be read with the lights off – but I also want to recommend it to all of you, for next time you want to be scared out of your skin (…and maybe I mean that literally…). Speculative Fiction always ensnares me, and this was no exception.

August was also a month in which I returned to my old favourite, Historical Romance, with “Tiffany Girl” by Deeanne Gist. I’ll be honest and say that I didn’t expect to like it much (it’s a romance between a man and a woman… and I’ve been a bit rude about that genre, historically, because I’m an idiot, but it’s growing on me now, and I’m sorry for the opinions I used to have of it), but then I ADORED IT! It’s all about the young women hired by Louis Comfort Tiffany to complete the stained glasswork on the chapel he designed for the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, when the original (male) glassworkers went on strike. Much as I dislike the idea of crossing a picket line in real life, I’d say it’s probably fine in fiction, and certainly makes for a brilliant story here. Of course, there’s a love story in there, too – as it’s a Historical Romance novel – and it’s so gorgeously written that I practically cried as I hoovered up the last pages of this book. It’s exactly the kind of love story I want to write, with lots of Yearning and Longing, and very little Telling Each Other How You Feel (we live for drama, and we live for drawn-out slow-burn romances, but only in fiction!), and big sweeping Romantic Gestures (which are great in real life as well). As it focuses so heavily on the creation of stained-glass windows and ornaments, there are whole pages of beautiful descriptions to bring it all to life, and although it’s actually just black text on white pages, the whole book feels alive with colour! It took all my self-control not to convert the living room of my university house into a glassworks.

Romanov Russia is not the only aspect of history (a ridiculously general genre, anyway) which interests me; I’m also drawn to Disaster History, the study of disasters, how and why they happened, and steps we’ve taken to stop them happening again. On 4th August 2020, a cache of ammonium nitrate exploded in Beirut, destroying a large area of the port, and killing over 200 people. All I could think of was how much it looked like the Halifax explosion of 6th December 1917. 103 years later, it was happening again: a fire out of control, a store of explosives too close to the flames, countless families shaken, too many lives lost. It was at the front of my mind. I’d just started reading “Shattered City: The Halifax Explosion and the Road to Recovery” by Janet M. Kitz, a comprehensive account of the disaster. From the stories of its victims and the families that mourn them, to the valiant efforts of countless charitable organisations to help repair the damage done to the city and its inhabitants, the book covers everything. My main OC-verse is one where all of these series exist in the same universe. Even Monster Girl Encyclopedia. Slavaria Cossack is a friend/weird harem group and is utterly shameless about it, with the same sort of chemistry that Clarkson/Hammond/May have. The 9-13 became members at various points after Sahaidachny's 'you're allowed to be you' arc. All of them are 15 in present day. 9-13 are based on existing characters in the same sense in which JJBA Stands are based on existing songs.

Note: 5 of my OCs in chronological order of meeting C.J.S. after his 'being able to be himself' revelation over the course of a few months - the stoic bodyguard-in-training Esmeralda Petersburg, the disciplinarian Tess Dileva, the poetic Kirumi Silkenstar, the spunky wannabe witch Karaina Caulton & the highly introverted loner Suki Ryushima - are derived from and inspired by existing OCs found on (y/n) x yandere quizzes on Quotev that I took a liking to thanks to the story/characters/detail/etc., like how much of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is inspired by Western songs. This includes their personalities. I took 5 such quizzes honestly answering the questions posed based on my personality and that of Clarkov J. Sahaidachny, my first and main OC, which are very similar in most ways but very different in some areas. These 5 were the results. As for the dere sides, they start out full on and become more mentally sound as time goes on. That part is inspired by the development of Mizore Shirayuki in Rosario + Vampire. It's how I have to do almost everything in life. Start out with a base, then slowly build it into my own thing. It's a bit annoying, but I make do with what I have. November the 14th marked the 143rd anniversary since the birth of Ekaterina Geltser (14 November 1876 - 12 December 1962).

Ekaterina Geltzer. Russian-Soviet dancer who is generally regarded as the first ‘Soviet’ ballerina. She was the daughter of Vasily Geltser, mime artist and ballet master at the Bolshoi Ballet (who also co-wrote the original libretto for Swan Lake) and studied at the Bolshoi School from 1884, graduating into the company in 1894.She took further studies with Christian Johansson and Petipa in St Petersburg. In 1896 she went to St Petersburg to dance with the Mariinsky for two years, then returned to the Bolshoi where she was promoted to first ballerina in 1901. 

A stocky dancer with a robust, even heroic style, Geltser was the definitive Bolshoi ballerina in the early part of the 20th century, her forceful stage personality showcased especially in the dramatic roles of Gorsky. 

She created the role of Swanilda in Gorsky's new staging of Coppélia (1905), Colombine in his Harlequinade (1907), the title role in his Salammbô (1910), Medora in his 1912 staging of Le Corsaire, and Tsar-Maiden in his Little Humpbacked Horse (1914). She also danced the traditional ballerina repertory, excelling most in the demi-caractère roles of Kitri and Esmeralda. She appeared with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in Paris in 1910; the following year at the Alhambra Theatre in London with dancers from the Bolshoi. She also appeared at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York with Mordkin's All-Star Imperial Russian Ballet, dancing Odette-Odile in the first complete Swan Lake ever seen in America (1911). 

One of her most significant creations was the role of Tao-Hoa in the groundbreaking Soviet ballet The Red Poppy (1927), choreographed by her husband and stage partner Vassily Tikhomirov. She retired from the Bolshoi in 1935, although continued to tour extensively in Russia. 

She was one of the first ballerinas to be awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR (1925). - Oxford  Reference
