Poem: Architectural Sadist
Flaying flesh, feeling fresh.
I'll chew through meat and femur.
Extract eyes, brutalise.
Now a thing,
It shall sing,
My forever screamer.
Esher stairs of skin and bone,
Muffled voice, a echo red.
Pressure bobs eyes yourself shown,
You are all except from dead.
And now I can frolic,
Feel safe in your walls,
Be lost in the symbolic;
Our monolithic halls.

Underrated 2018: A Light Amongst Shadows
James Spencer is hardly the typical “troubled youth” who ends up at Whisperwood School for Boys. Instead of hating the strict schedules and tight oversight by staff, James blossoms, quickly making friends and indulging in his love of writing, while contemplating the merits of sneaking love poems to the elusive and aloof William Esher. The rumours about William’s sexuality and opium reliance are prime gossip material amongst the third years. Rumours that only further pique James' curiosity to uncover what William is really like beneath all that emotional armor. And, when the normally collected William stumbles in one night, shaken and ranting of ghosts... James is the only one who believes him. James himself has heard the nails dragging down his bedroom door and the sobs echoing in the halls at night. He knows others have, too, even if no one will admit it. The staff refuses to entertain such ridiculous tales, and punishment awaits anyone who brings it up. Their fervent denial and the disappearance of students only furthers James’s determination to find out what secrets Whisperwood is hiding... Especially if it means keeping William and himself from becoming the next victims.

James is hardly the typical troubled youth who ends up at Whisperwood School for Boys. 2. A Hymn in the Silence by Kelley York. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

3. A Calm Before the Storm by Kelley York. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

4. Picture Unavailable by Andrew J. Brandt. ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2
While looking through their sixth-grade yearbooks, Charlie and his two best friends notice that the portrait of their missing classmate has been left blank except for two words: Picture Unavailable. 5. Because Everything Is Right but Everything Is Wrong by Erin Donohue. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Can you be lost and not know it? Can other people stop you from being lost? Seventeen-year-old Caleb’s world is disintegrating, his walls are closing in, his sky is threatening to fall. He's barely holding on. To deadlines. To friends. To family. To mum. To Pat. But he has Casey.
6. Suicide Watch by Kelley York. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Vincent has spent his entire life being shuffled from one foster home to the next. His grades suck. Making friends? Out of the question thanks to his nervous breakdowns and unpredictable moods. 7. Jolt by Bernard Beckett. ⭐⭐⭐1/2
Marko surfaces from a drug induced haze to find himself hidden from the world in a psychiatric ward. He is certain the 'Doctor' means to kill him, and he in turn has vengeful plans of his own. But how is it he came to stop taking his medication? Who can Marko trust and how much time does he have?
8. Charm & Strange by Stephanie Kuehn. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A lonely teenager exiled to a remote Vermont boarding school in the wake of a family tragedy must either surrender his sanity to the wild wolves inside his mind or learn that surviving means more than not dying.
9. It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Ambitious New York City teenager Craig is determined to succeed at life--which means getting into the right high school to get into the right college to get the right job. But once Craig aces his way into Manhattan's Executive Pre-Professional High School, the pressure becomes unbearable. He stops eating and sleeping until, one night, he nearly kills himself. Craig's suicidal episode gets him checked into a mental hospital.
10. The Pigman by Paul Zindel. ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2
When sophomores John and Lorraine played a practical joke a few months ago on a stranger named Angelo Pignati, they had no idea what they were starting. Virtually overnight, almost against their will, the two befriended the lonely old man, and it wasn't long before they were more comfortable in his house than their own. But now Mr. Pignati is dead. And for John and Lorraine, the only way to find peace is to write down the Pigman's story.
11. Ghosting You by Alexander C. Eberhart. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

12. Wild Summer by Suki Fleet. ⭐⭐⭐
At fifteen, Christopher falls in love with a boy whose life he saves. But things go wrong and four years later, he wishes he'd acted differently. His conscience begins to haunt him, and he knows he must find Summer again.
13. Monster by Michael Grant. ⭐⭐⭐1/2
It's been four years since a meteor hit Perdido Beach and everyone disappeared. Everyone, except the kids trapped in the FAYZ. Now the dome is gone and meteors are hitting earth with an even deadlier virus. Humans will mutate into monsters and the whole world will be exposed. As some teens begin to morph into heroes, they will find that others have become dangerously out of control... and that the world is on the brink of a monstrous battle between good and evil.
14. As Far as You'll Take Me by Phil Stamper. ⭐⭐⭐
Seventeen-year-old Marty Pierce leaves small-town Kentucky for London, hoping to explore his sexuality and find work playing oboe, but homesickness, anxiety, and his dwindling savings worsen even as his dreams are coming true.
15. The Blue Lawn by William Taylor. ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2
David and Theo are fifteen and sixteen and from very different backgrounds; when they become close friends they must find a way of dealing with the strong physical attraction they feel for each other.
16. Brian's Winter by Gary Paulsen. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Instead of being rescued from a plane crash, as in Hatchet, this story portrays what would have happened to Brian had he been forced to survive a winter in the wilderness with only his survival pack and hatchet.
17. The River by Gary Paulsen. ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2
Because of his success surviving alone in the wilderness for fifty-four days, fifteen-year-old Brian, profoundly changed by his time in the wild, is asked to undergo a similar experience to help scientists learn more about the psychology of survival.
18. Lock & West by Alexander C. Eberhart. ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2
Lock is awkward. He can't make eye contact, counts when he's nervous and has to remind himself several times a day how 'normal' teens behave. Homeschooled most of his life, he's resigned himself to a friendless existence at his new Atlanta high school. Until he meets West.
19. The Catcher In The Rye by J. D. Salinger. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Like many teenagers, 16-year-old Holden Caulfield doesn't really know what he wants to do, although he is sure that he wants to avoid anything phony. It tells the description of Holden's tortured adolescence as he comes to terms with the transition to adulthood and the onset of a nervous breakdown.

YA & School Love in LGBTQIA+ Historical Romances
First off, I’m glad to say that the YA novels of today are teeming with LGBT characters, many of them MCs. That said, this is just a taste of a few that I really enjoyed or by authors you might not be aware of yet. @lgbtqreads is an excellent resource for more exhaustive lists, and also companies like Book Riot.
All Out: The No-Longer-Secret Stories of Queer Teens throughout the Ages. Short story anthology of LGBTQIA teenagers throughout history, from across the spectrum. Ed by Sandra Mitchell
- Take a journey through time and genres to discover stories where queer teens live, love and shape the world around them. Seventeen young adult authors across the queer spectrum have come together to create a collection of beautifully written diverse historical fiction for teens. From a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood set in war-torn 1870s Mexico featuring a transgender soldier, to two girls falling in love while mourning the death of Kurt Cobain, forbidden love in a sixteenth-century Spanish convent or an asexual girl discovering her identity amid the 1970s roller-disco scene, All Out tells a diverse range of stories across cultures, time periods and identities, shedding light on an area of history often ignored or forgotten.
Hayden Thorne novels are being reissued. She specializes in YA LGBT romance novels, many with fantasy elements, but all of them well constructed and inventive. I’ve read almost all of her novels in this genre, and several are mentioned elsewhere on this blog. Just, please, check out this amazing author’s work for some very creative takes on some of your favorite tropes, and ideas I’ve never read anywhere else.
A Place for Wolves by Kosoko Jackson
- Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe meets Code Name Verity in this heartbreaking and poignant historical thriller. (YA!!)
James Mills isn’t sure he can forgive his parents for dragging him away from his life, not to mention his best friend and sister, Anna. He’s never felt so alone. Enter Tomas. Falling for Tomas is unexpected, but sometimes the best things in life are. Then their world splits apart. A war that has been brewing finally bursts forward, filled with violence, pain, and cruelty. James and Tomas can only rely on each other as they decide how far they are willing to go—and who they are willing to become—in order to make it back to their families.
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee (Review)
- A young bisexual British lord embarks on an unforgettable Grand Tour of Europe with his best friend/secret crush. An 18th-century romantic adventure for the modern age written by This Monstrous Thing author Mackenzi Lee - Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda meets the 1700s.Henry "Monty" Montague doesn't care that his roguish passions are far from suitable for the gentleman he was born to be. But as Monty embarks on his grand tour of Europe, his quests for pleasure and vice are in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family's estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy. So Monty vows to make this yearlong escapade one last hedonistic hurrah and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty's reckless decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt, it calls into question everything he knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.Witty, dazzling, and intriguing at every turn, The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue is an irresistible romp that explores the undeniably fine lines between friendship and love.
Don't miss Felicity's adventures in The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy, the highly anticipated sequel!
Pantomine by Laura Lam (Micah Grey Trilogy Book 1)
- In a land of lost wonders, the past is stirring once more . . .
Gene's life resembles a debutante's dream. Yet she hides a secret that would see her shunned by the nobility. Gene is both male and female. Then she displays unwanted magical abilities - last seen in mysterious beings from an almost-forgotten age. Matters escalate further when her parents plan a devastating betrayal, so she flees home, dressed as a boy.
The city beyond contains glowing glass relics from a lost civilization. They call to her, but she wants freedom not mysteries. So, reinvented as 'Micah Grey', Gene joins the circus. As an aerialist, she discovers the joy of flight - but the circus has a dark side. She's also plagued by visions foretelling danger. A storm is howling in from the past, but will she heed its roar?
Ash by Malinda Lo
In the wake of her father's death, Ash is left at the mercy of her cruel stepmother. Consumed with grief, her only joy comes by the light of the dying hearth fire, rereading the fairy tales her mother once told her. In her dreams, someday the fairies will steal her away. When she meets the dark and dangerous fairy Sidhean, she believes that her wish may be granted. The day that Ash meets Kaisa, the King's Huntress, her heart begins to change. Instead of chasing fairies, Ash learns to hunt with Kaisa. Their friendship, as delicate as a new bloom, reawakens Ash's capacity for love--and her desire to live. But Sidhean has already claimed Ash for his own, and she must make a choice between fairy tale dreams and true love. Entrancing and empowering, Ash beautifully unfolds the connections between life and love, and solitude and death, where transformation can come from even the deepest grief.
The Unbinding of Mary Reade by Miriam McNamara
- A clever, romantic novel based on the true story of a girl who disguised herself as a boy to sail with the infamous pirates Anne Bonny and Calico Jack—and fell in love with Anne Bonny.
There’s no place for a girl in Mary’s world. Not in the home of her mum, desperately drunk and poor. Not in the household of her wealthy granny, where no girl can be named an heir. And certainly not in the arms of Nat, her childhood love who never knew her for who she was. As a sailor aboard a Caribbean merchant ship, Mary’s livelihood—and her safety—depends on her ability to disguise her gender.
At least, that’s what she thinks is true. But then pirates attack the ship, and in the midst of the gang of cutthroats, Mary spots something she never could have imagined: a girl pirate.
The sight of a girl standing unafraid upon the deck, gun and sword in hand, changes everything. In a split-second decision, Mary turns her gun on her own captain, earning herself the chance to join the account and become a pirate alongside Calico Jack and Anne Bonny.
For the first time, Mary has a shot at freedom. But imagining living as her true self is easier, it seems, than actually doing it. And when Mary finds herself falling for the captain’s mistress, she risks everything—her childhood love, her place among the crew, and even her life.
Breathlessly romantic and brilliantly subversive, The Unbinding of Mary Reade is sure to sweep readers off their feet and make their hearts soar.
Deviant Desire by Jackson Marsh (Just came out March 7th!)
- The Victorian East End lives in fear of the Ripper and his mission to kill rent boys. Silas Hawkins, nineteen and forging a life on the streets could well be the next victim, but when he meets Archer, his life changes forever. Young, attractive and rich, Archer is The Viscount Clearwater, a philanthropist, adventurer and homosexual. When Archer suspects the Ripper is killing to lure him to a confrontation, he risks his reputation and his life to stop the madman's murders. Every man must play his part, including Silas.A mashup of mystery, romance and adventure, Deviant Desire is set in an imaginary London of 1888. The first in an on-going series, it takes the theme of loyalty and friendship in a world where homosexuality is a crime. Secrets must be kept, lovers must be protected, and for Archer and Silas, it marks the start of their biggest adventure - love.
The Prince and The Dressmaker by Jen Wang
- Set in Paris, this graphic novel follows Sebastian, a prince with a secret. By day, Sebastian laments his parents' fervent search for his bride-to-be, but by night, Sebastian transforms into fashion icon Lady Crystallia! Sebastian's best friend and dressmaker, Frances, has kept his secret, but when the secret becomes too hard to keep, she may risk their friendship and Sebastian's trust for her own shot at the spotlight.
A Light Amongst Shadows (Dark is the Night series Book 1) by Kelley York and Rowan Altwood
This whole series is gold, but here is the information on the first novel...
James Spencer is hardly the typical troubled youth who ends up at Whisperwood School for Boys. Instead of hating the strict schedules and tight oversight by staff, James blossoms, quickly making friends, indulging in his love of writing, and contemplating the merits of sneaking love poems to the elusive and aloof William Esher. The rumours about William’s sexuality and opium reliance are prime gossip material amongst the third years…rumours that only further pique James’ curiosity to uncover what William is really like beneath all that emotional armor. And, when the normally collected William stumbles in one night, shaken and ranting of ghosts, James is the only one who believes him. James himself has heard the nails dragging down his bedroom door and the sobs echoing in the halls at night. He knows others have, too, even if no one will admit it. The staff refuses to entertain such ridiculous tales, and punishment awaits anyone who brings it up. Their fervent denial and the disappearance of students only furthers James’ determination to find out what secrets Whisperwood is hiding…especially if it prevents William and himself from becoming the next victims.
Originally, this list was going to include professors too, but they were already on a list and May/December romances will be on the list for May.
Adding a link for a list of best LGBT fantasy romances in the YA genre, because they have several novels with historical themes that I know friends/fellow readers I know, have enjoyed.

book 2: a hymm in the silence
Since graduating from Whisperwood School for Boys, William has found a sense of normalcy in his life with James. He has a steady (albeit secret) relationship, a home, and a job—even if it doesn’t pay the greatest. Nevermind that he lacks James’ reckless bravery when it comes to dealing with spirits; he does his best and it hasn’t killed him thus far. When a new client calls on their expertise in solving a grisly multiple homicide, William resists. They’re spirit hunters, not detectives. But the money is too much to pass up when they don’t know when their next meal will be, and soon they’re arriving at Evenbury Manor, nestled in a close-knit rural community, ready to investigate. They're in over their heads, but in very different ways than William could have anticipated. The hills are filled with creatures far more dangerous than any they've ever encountered, and their usual tactics aren’t working. On top of his renewed struggles with his addiction, William is left to fend for himself against the dead to protect not only the community, but the person in the world that’s most important to him.

Faith In Action "Two Directions'
Psalm 1: The two directions.
“How happy is the man who does not follow the advice of the wicked?” [Holman study bible}
“Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly” [King James Version]
The word happy, “blessedness of” refers to the joy and satisfaction that comes from knowing that one is right with God, even though at times conflict with the world may bring disagreements.
The poem written on our first post “Oh what it is ‘to be a Christian” refers to this kind of Happiness [blessedness of knowing]
The second part of this verse “the advice of the wicked” [Hsb]
“Not the counsel of the ungodly” [Kjv]
We need the advice of unbelievers through life on technical issues, such as doctors and lawyers [not all doctors and lawyers are unbelievers just examples of people we may need advice from] But with the things pertaining to God, moral issues, and faithfulness we need more than just the counsel of man. We need that joy and satisfaction that comes from knowing Him.
From the poem again: “The light real Christians follow is the everlasting Presence of God”.
Don’t be confused; the ‘happy’ referred to in the first translation [HSB]
Is! ‘thye blessed’ in the [Kjv]
Comes from the original Hebrew ‘esher, [eh’-sher] happiness, which literally means we have the Blessed assurance of who He is and that He will never leave us or forsake us.
Think about that over your morning coffee, think about that over those stress inducing moments, think about that when the giants around you rear their ugly heads and try to beat you into submission. He will never leave you or forsake you.
So today be Happy and hold onto that blessed assurance of Who he is, and is to us.
Feels like a great day coming!
God Bless.
The Poem referred to.
There is no way to deserve it,
It’s a feeling that grows indeep
A feeling of tremendous excitement,
A feeling reserved for those who seek.
Of course the roads not easy, but it leads to eternal life,
Through a life of dedication and victories in Christ.
A life that not many follow.
The light they see not clear
Their eyes are blurred by worldly fascinations,
And they only have a clouded view.
But the light real Christians follow is the everlasting Presence of God

My friend Kelley York's book A Light Amongst Shadows (Dark is the Night Book 1) came out today! I got an ARC and read it in less than a day! She asked if I would like to read a book about gay Victorian boys at a boarding school who chase ghosts! Hell yes I would! It's on sale for .99 cents! Buy it, read it, and enjoy! https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07CRQ1JQT/ref=dbs_a_w_dp_b07crq1jqt Here's the blurb: James Spencer is hardly the typical troubled youth who ends up at Whisperwood School for Boys. Instead of hating the strict schedules and tight oversight by staff, James blossoms, quickly making friends, indulging in his love of writing, and contemplating the merits of sneaking love poems to the elusive and aloof William Esher. The rumours about William’s sexuality and opium reliance are prime gossip material amongst the third years…rumours that only further pique James' curiosity to uncover what William is really like beneath all that emotional armor. Their fervent denial and the disappearance of students only furthers James’ determination to find out what secrets Whisperwood is hiding...especially if it prevents William and himself from becoming the next victims.

How Happy Blessed In Happiness
Psalm 1: The two directions.
“How happy is the man {or Woman} who does not follow the advice of the wicked?” [Holman study bible}
“Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly” [King James Version]
The word happy, “blessedness of” refers to the joy and satisfaction that comes from knowing that one is right with God, even though at times conflict with the world may bring disagreements.
The poem written on our first post “Oh what it is`to be a Christian” refers to this kind of Happiness [blessedness of knowing]
So today be Happy, and hold onto that blessed assurance of Who he is, and is to us.
Feels like a great day coming!
God Bless.

An incision was made in the victim’s ribs and a hook placed in the hole. In this case, the victim stayed alive for 3 days until clubbed to death by the sentry guarding him who he had insulted. This and other engravings are found in the autobiographical narrative of Stedman, a young Dutchman who joined a military force against rebellions of the enslaved in the Dutch colony. The engravings are based on Stedman’s own drawings and were done by professional engravers. A Light Amongst Shadows (Dark is the Night series Book 1) by Kelley York and Rowan Altwood
The rumours about William’s sexuality and opium reliance are prime gossip material amongst the third years…rumours that only further pique James' curiosity to uncover what William is really like beneath all that emotional armor. And, when the normally collected William stumbles in one night, shaken and ranting of ghosts, James is the only one who believes him. James himself has heard the nails dragging down his bedroom door and the sobs echoing in the halls at night. He knows others have, too, even if no one will admit it. Their fervent denial and the disappearance of students only furthers James’ determination to find out what secrets Whisperwood is hiding...especially if it prevents William and himself from becoming the next victims.
Review
Lucky me to discover this book was coming out, by doing a “m/m romance” search on Twitter. Going into the novel, I expected a blend of young Holmes/Watson and Ouran High School Host Club. Much as I love both, I am glad to say that is not what this novel turned out to be. Yes, we have two young men with investigation goals that fall in love and a boy’s school setting, but this novel is unique unto itself.
According to York’s Twitter account, James is based off a young Jack Davenport (Norrington from Pirate’s of the Caribbean, Eggy’s father from Kingsman) and Will is from James D’arcy (Richard from An American Haunting)--two of my favorite underrated British actors. James has the saucy but steadfast nature we see in many of Davenport’s characters, and Will certainly possesses the quiet, cerebral sort of personality that I usually think of from D’arcy. Once the romance portion of the novel begins (Chapter 3), they’re both completely devoted to one another.
Both young men have pasts that are not light, but where it might be simple to have these elements weigh them down and ruin everything, it instead unites the pair beyond what they’ve already discovered they enjoy about one another. There is definitely angst present, because the novel ends up being more like Holmes/Watson in The Devil’s Backbone, but the relationship between James and Will is a healthy one, and they have lovely moments with poetry and picnics. James helps Will through his laudanum issues, and Will respects James enough to wait for furthering the physical nature of their relationship (due to James’s past). They also combine their strengths to help them solve a series of crimes that threaten their fellow students, some of whom share their inclinations. So while it is not all sunshine and roses, they have mutual respect for one another, and they’re very tender.
There are some genuinely creepy moments in this novel, and the plot of the school’s background definitely takes this to a dark place, but the boys also receive support and assistance from friends and faculty that are aware of their relationship. So, while there is period-typical homophobia, it doesn’t result in the young men having to always stay guarded or deter them from pursuing their own HEA.
I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens to these two characters, especially since by the end of the novel they’re in a position to further explore the paranormal--together.

Sunday Encouragement
If This is your day for rest, like us all you still need encouragement. Be encouraged today by this wonderful verse from Palms 1 verse 1:
Psalm 1 Verse 1: "How happy is the man who does not follow the advice of the wicked?" [Holman study bible}
"Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly" [King James Version]
The word happy, "blessedness of" refers to the joy and satisfaction that comes from knowing that one is right with God, even though at times conflict with the world may bring disagreements.
The poem written on our first post "Oh what it is`to be a Christian" refers to this kind of Happiness [blessedness of knowing]
The second part of this verse "the advice of the wicked" [Hsb]
"Not the counsel of the ungodly" [Kjv]
We need the advice of unbelievers through life on technical issues, such as doctors and lawyers [not all doctors and lawyers are unbelievers just examples of people we may need advice from] But with the things pertaining to God, moral issues, and faithfulness we need more than just the counsel of man. We need that joy and satisfaction that comes from knowing Him.
Don't be confused; the 'happy' referred to in the first translation [Hsb]
Is! 'thye blessed' in the [Kjv]
Comes from the original Hebrew 'esher, [eh'-sher] happiness, which literally means we have the Blessed assurance of who He is and that He will never leave us or forsake us.
Think about that over your morning coffee, think about that over those stress inducing moments, think about that when the giants around you rear their ugly heads and try to beat you into submission. He will never leave you or forsake you.
So today be Happy, and hold onto that blessed assurance of Who he is, and is to us.
Feels like a great day coming!
