Talking to Sproutlings either brings up charming, whimsical thoughts about the world around them, or suddenly dropping metaphysical matters like it's nothing.

The way these Domina Sproutlings talk about souls is really thought-provoking, since it's an inverse of real world religions that often hold that it's the soul that is the eternal component of our being, in contrast to the temporary, physical body.

However, from the point of view of the seemingly deathless Sproutlings, it's people who have souls who disappear from the world around them. It's a weird perspective flip, but one that's also interesting to think about.

Interestingly, the more conventional belief of souls being eternal comes from Daena right before you activate The Wisdom of Gaeus quest, and this quest also begins in Domina.

I realized my screenshots for the HD version were incomplete whoops, but I did have these from a playthrough I did on emulator. There is a minor difference between the PS1 and HD version:

....it's also a bit of irony, considering that Star-Crossed Lovers will lead to the permanent death of a few characters, possibly including Daena, depending on the player's choices.

But, hmmm...either Escad or Daena (or both) can die, Irwin dies as well and is implied to have chosen reincarnation, and you won't be able to find them in the Underworld. On the other hand, Matilda also physically dies, but lives on as a Wisdom in her younger body.

It might not be connected, but there's some crossing over some themes in that, I think, that Matilda, like the Sproutlings, doesn't disappear.

Some couples I like

Here is how you read the list… If a couple has a (s) after it, that means it's directly stated in the game/show that they're a couple, and I feel funny breaking them up, even if I wasn't too keen on it. I am going to rate them individually with the (s) before the number so you can see how keen I am on the pairing. If a couple has a (1) after it, it's a first rate couple. Meaning, they are favorites of mine, and I tend not to read fics if they get split up, unless I was unaware (no one marked it), or someone recommended the story (the only exception is if the broken pairing(s) is/are reworked as 1 or more (3) pairings). But if a (1) or (s) couple has the word FANATIC after it, that means I'm a rabid fan for it. I tend to leave a fic that I've started if I don't find them together, unless the romance started so late that the plot has got me intrigued. If a couple has a (2) after it, it's a second-rate couple. Meaning, I like them, but I'm not fanatical about them. I couldn't care less if the story I'm reading splits them up. I can even have a character appear twice in a second-rate couple list. Finally, a (3) is one I don't really like, but don't hate, either.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire was witnessed by 100s of people, who saw women and girls jumping from the 9th floor to escade the flames - to die less painfully. The newspapers covered it. Public opinion changed dramatically in favor of unions and workers rights.

Public opinion - and engagement - matters.

I don't see people talking about this so today is the 110th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, in where the factory owners locked working women and girls inside to "eliminate the risk of theft" (in reality it was too keep them from taking breaks), which resulted in the gruesome deaths of 123 mostly immigrant women and girls and 23 men, many of whom jumped to their deaths from the ninth floor either in a panicked attempt to escape or in order to die quickly. There were reports that some of the workers were on fire already as they jumped.

The eighth floor of the building was able to telephone the tenth floor to warn them about the fire, but the factory on the ninth floor where these women and girls labored had no such communication and such warning.

The factory owners were criminally charged with manslaughter for actions that contributed to the mass deaths but acquitted. However, this tragedy led to mass sympathy to the labor movement, and unions spurred on safety regulations that passed in New York state and eventually the entire country, and activists were able to reduce child labor in the process.

This tragedy is a reminder that has been forgotten in the 110 years since: every safety regulation-- every scrap of paperwork contributing to the hundreds of pages of red tape people like to complain about--every word of it was written in the blood of a laborer.

It was a hot summer in Escade, school just ended and you and I, not to mention the whole class actually were on the edge of our seats just waiting for the day school finally ends, I didn’t really mind or…pay attention for that matter, I was mostly looking out the window, there was a bird nest full of eggs and the mom bird was just asleep on them, it was cute.

“Psst, hey…hey! Mia!…hey!” You called out to me, for someone who was known to be a bit loud back then, you were surprisingly quiet when you tried getting my attention, or I wasn’t listening, [“hey!”] anyway I looked at you with a confused look, I honestly wasn’t sure what you were going to tell me but I was interested…plus you never really tried getting my attention so it was a bit of a surprise.

“Hm?” was all I could say before looking at you, you seemed really confident, and even had your goofy smirk as you looked at me. “Hey Mia, I’m betting my summer allowance that you’ll have a sucky summer!” you gave your usual banter, it was honestly endearing at this point. But I had to talk some smack back to your bratty noggin. [hmmm] what?! We did that a lot in the past! “Hmmm? is that a be~~~t?” I slyly asked with a smirk [you and your…warkin smirk of yours…it’s always bad news when you smirked], not my fault you always lost, now is it? Anyway, it was funny that you gulped with nervousness as I looked at you. It was nice to see you try to act tough though. “Y-yeah! It is,” you talked as if you won an achievement “we try to have as much fun this summer, whoever has the best stories to tell when we meet again gets to make the other person do whatever they want next summer” I could only smirk, no way was I planning to lose, so with determination, I spoke “deal!”

“Now hold on” Ivan stopped Mia’s story, he looked at her with shock as he thought he saw pettiness in her eyes. A playful sort but still pettiness all the same.

“Are you…” his question was soon answered as her iconic smirk came to view…the gall. “Mia, that was years ago, do you seriously want to?”  He felt himself grow annoyed.

Mia could only give a giggle before replying “I’m kidding, I’m kidding!” she cheeky grinned at his question before erupting in playful laughter as Ivan looked more infuriated “I’m Kidding, I’m kidding!” she kept chuckling before finally finding all of her was now out of her system “I know it’s been years, I’m not that petty so don’t worry” she tried to reassure but bared no fruit. Ivan simply looked at her with mild mistrust before speaking “okay…”

Now. where was I? [the deal?] thank you. Now, the class was almost over and we shook our hands to seal the bet we had made that summer. You and I were determined to win. Then the bell rang. 

“See you next year Ivan!” I screamed out. I didn’t waste time leaving the classroom, plus I had everything packed before the bell rang so it wasn’t that hard. “Remember our bet!” I heard you yell out, though I’m pretty sure both of us would forget about it and just enjoy our summer like last year [you’re not wrong about that].

As the sun set, I got home. Escade wasn’t a big city. At least compared to other wall cities, being only roughly 500 square kilometers? Something similar to it. Though I have heard it was one of the few highly industrialized cities in the restless isles [densely populated too…] that is true. Another rumor I’ve heard is that the architecture was similar to the new world that our world fused with. 

Home was nice. It smelled of flowers, leaves, and hot water…though I guess it’s normal for a tea shop. The shop itself was mostly quiet.  we don’t get customers often, especially being near the west side of the wall [at least the school was near it] yeah, but it gained a lot thanks to the quality of the tea, so that was enough to keep everyone fed and happy.

“Ah, Welcome back Mia!” “Welcome back Mia, how was school?” I heard a voice call from the customer’s room, looking to it was Dad and Maria [...] what?! Even if she practically raised me I still saw her as more an older sister than a mother.

[I guess that's just something about being adopted I guess] …. [...sorry] you better be. Anyway, it was nice to see them, I honestly felt as if I didn’t see them in months and just bolted to them. “Hey Dad, he Big sis! School was great!” I yelled out, I was practically jumping with joy.

Both of them smiled “how about you tell us at dinner?” Dad suggested, he seemed pretty fond of what I was going to tell. 

After dinner, I was pooped! The only thing I wanted to do was just go to bed, but before I did I saw an old photo of my dad and my uncle when they were kids. The part of the photo where my uncle’s head was burnt off and when I asked dad about it he seemed to either change the topic or dismiss it altogether.

Regardless, I looked at it for a while, it became a habit at that point before I went to my room. Whilst I cuddled in my sheets, I had a lot of Ideas of what I wanted to do Tomorrow and as I fell asleep, I couldn’t wait for what adventures tomorrow had.

I know I've been kinda talking willy-nilly about all the spoilers for the major story arcs, and maybe it's a moot point when this game has been out for 25 years, but uh. Lots and lots of spoilers for all 3 major story arcs in this post!

Since I mentioned it in the Punkmaster post, I decided I might as well talk about this, but the three major story arcs have special title cards for some of their quests. A dragon for the Dragon Arc, a jewel for the Jumi Arc, and a Faerie for the Star-Crossed Lovers arc (which is why I sometimes refer to it as the Faerie Arc). The colors for these illustrations change too, depending on the quest.

I...actually don't know why only some particular quests in the Jumi and Star-Crossed Lovers are given these special title cards? Say, for the Jumi Arc, the first one to get this special title card is The Looking-Glass Tower, but even before that we have The Lost Princess and the Flame of Hope, so it seems strange this is what gets the special title card. Of all Jumi quests, the ones that get these title cards are The Looking Glass Tower, Cosmo, Alexandrite, Fluorite and Teardrop Crystal, while The Lost Princess, The Flame of Hope, The Lucky Clover, and Two Pearls don't have these. (there is also Drowned Dreams, but it's connection to the overall arc is not as significant).

Hmm...I think the colors might have significance here...The Looking Glass Tower is white, like Pearl's core, and it's a quest about her looking for her identity. Cosmo and Alexandrite are the two colors associated with Alexandrite, green and purple, and fittingly enough both quests have him/her/them (?) taking a major role. Fluorite is a milder green color - while real fluorites come in a range of colors, Florina's clothes are in that green/blue-green color color. Teardrop Crystal is blue, which might be for the water of tears...but also could be for Elazul, since he does call on everyone to return the favor and give a Teardrop Crystal back to cure the protagonist.

Star-Crossed Lovers is a bit more complete, with only two related quests not getting these title cards. The ones with are The Murmuring Forest, Two Torches, In Search of Faeries, Star-Crossed Lovers and Heaven's Gate, with only The Wisdom of Gaeus and Pokiehl Dream Teller not having them.

(sorry, I apparently didn't have a screenshot for The Wisdom of Gaeus, but I know it doesn't have the Faerie illustration.) I'm not sure if the colors have as much significance here - this could be stretching it but...Matilda's color theme in her younger years is green, and then orange in her older years, while Irwin's is red. Huh, I just realized Matilda's older self wears a color closer to Irwin, while her younger self shared a color theme with Escad. Escad has three colors associated with his, though, his clothes mostly green, but there is also a large part that is purple, and lastly his hair is white. Daena wears blue clothes - all of their garments' colors pop up in in the title cards.

The Dragon Arc...has all of its quests labeled with the special title card, so hooray, perfect attendance!

The colors for these ones are easy, red for Drakonis, blue for Akravator, dark purple for Jajara given his association with death, and silver for Vadise and Sierra.

Hm...if I take it that the Dragon Arc is a "tutorial" of sorts to clue in players to the major arc quests, maybe this explains why not all quests in the other two arcs have them? So you're meant to piece them together? That's just me speculating, because I can't think of a lore reason to not label all the quests above. This does put in retrospect how massive the Jumi Arc is: the Dragon Arc has 5 quests, Star-Crossed Lovers has 7, and the Jumi arc has 9, and if you include Drowned Dreams, 10.

honestly at this point in the Fairies arc Escad just comes across as a racist prick
