The Best-Laid Plans Oft Go Awry

Chapter 23 is finally done. Three months of writer's block. Coming to the end of Miranja's journeys with Erik the Slayer. If you read, I hope you enjoy! (Link in title)

The pair took their seats at the usual table next to the bar, Miranja sitting where she could watch the entryway. Sorex came and took their drink requests, and they sat sipping while they waited for Miranja’s friends to start arriving. Erik was excited but self-conscious about meeting what he thought of as “fancy people,” but Miranja reassured him that she didn’t really associate much with those kinds of people. Her friends were the backbone of the city, the humble people who kept things running smoothly and provided needed services to the aforementioned “fancy people.”

As she spoke, Fihada ushered Erdi in through the door before him. The fletcher’s eyes shifted toward his customary table and widened in pleasant surprise at the sight of Miranja. He and the young cleaning woman approached together with wide smiles.

“Miranja!” the dashing Redguard exclaimed, holding his arms out to her.

Miranja stood and went over to him, hugging him enthusiastically, then turned to Erdi and hugged her tightly as well. She turned back toward Erik and extended an arm in his direction. “Guys, this is my friend, Erik the Slayer. He’s a mercenary from Rorikstead, and I must say, he’s worth his fee.” She cast a sly wink at Erik, and he beamed as he stood to greet the newcomers.

Fihada came around the table to shake his hand. “A mercenary from Rorikstead? I thought all Rorikstead produced were crops and farmers.”

Erdi pressed close to Miranja’s side, and when the Dragonborn turned to look at her, she was blushing furiously and averting her eyes from Erik. Miranja smiled and put a reassuring arm around Erdi’s shoulders.

“I used to be a farmer,” Erik was replying to Fihada. “My father runs the Frostfruit Inn there, and I helped him as well. But I wanted to get out and see more of the world, and Miss Miranja here helped me get my start as an adventurer.”
