[image ID: a black-pen sketch of Alan Strang of Equus and a horse. Strang, not depicted as any specific actor, is represented as a thin, long-limbed and somewhat androgynous figure. he is entirely nude, and stands at the centre of the drawing. his body is turned slightly towards the right, while his head is thrown back with his gaze aimed towards the top-left. Strang's arms are behind him, supporting his weight as his hands clutch a railing-like structure. he has a small mouth, which hangs slightly open, and his eyes are relatively large. his hair is shoulder-length and falls around his face in loose curls.
the horse's head hangs over Strang's left shoulder, is seen in profile and facing the left. the horse's hooves are raised off the ground, its body in the midst of a dramatic turn. both creatures' eyes are blacked out.
to the left of the figures, in block capitals, the word "equus" is written down the lower half of the page. the middle three letters are each embellished with a dot at their centres.
the hatching is dense and layered. the background is left entirely blank. /.End ID]
nothing's going to happen now but what you want to happen.

“The play ends with Dysart monologuing once again, wondering whether or not his practice actually helps anyone or whether Alan is beyond help. He also wonders if attempting to cure Alan of his obsession with horses will in fact remove Alan's humanity and everything unique about him.”

Thinking about how Richard Siken said, "Tell me about the dream where we pull the bodies out of the lake and dress them in warm clothes again. How it was late, and no one could sleep, the horses running until they forget that they are horses." Thinking about how Peter Shaffer said, "What desire could that be? Not to stay a horse any longer? ... Is it possible, at certain moments we cannot imagine, a horse can add its sufferings together—the non-stop jerks and jabs that are its daily life—and turn them into grief? What use is grief to a horse?"
I have a lot of Siken's "Scheherazade" and Shaffer's Equus thoughts.

me when critics like the thing i like: clearly i have a refined and intellectual taste, i have known the epitome of art
me when critics hate the thing i like: these fools... these foul beasts masquerading as men... these unintelligent and sad individuals are not capable of understanding the material as i have.

[image ID: a black-pen sketch of Alan Strang of Equus. Strang, depicted as a thin and semi-androgynous figure, lies on his back at the bottom of the sketch. he is stripped to the waist, dressed in loose-fitting trousers. his left hand rests by his thigh, his right by his hip. his head is thrown back, and the top of his face is obscured by his hair. the figure is shaded with dense cross hatching, such.that his skin has a somewhat shiny appearance.
behind him, a portrait of Martin Dysart in profile, placed on the left. depicted as an older man, Dysart looks towards the right, affecting an inquisitive look. his face is shaded in a different style to Strang, the lines more sparse and naturalistic.
to Dysart's right, the word "equus" in large block capitals. inside the letter Q is the face of a horse, looking towards the right.
at the bottom of the page, in smaller block capitals, is the text: "you'll feel nothing. nothing's going to happen now but what you want to happen." /.End ID]
you know who i am.

I haven't seen anyone talk about this, so I'm going to give an opinion
There is a play called Equus -by Peter Shaffer, and I want to mention parallels I feel could be in place (a bit of a ramble);
As much as Jimmy talking about his 'fascination' with horses could just be to the fuck with the psych evaluation, it struck a nerve with me and an idea about the play Equus;
Equus follows the story of a 17-year-old boy and his doctor. The boy sees horses as higher that what they're treated as, to then as "God" and confusing his adoration with his sexual attraction (having religion pushed on to him by his parents alongside this)
We know what happens to the horses at the very beginning but at the end of act 1, we find out that the boy had been riding horses naked, fulfilling an erotic desire. Near the end of act 2, he doesn't want to live with his actions but is stopped by the doctor before offing himself
Back to Mouthwashing;
We see it the very beginning the crash with the pony/horse mascot 'haunting' the corridors before we jump to two months later. Jimmy had violated Anya and once finding out she was pregnant, he crashed the ship. The mascot being a reminder of his actions as 'watching over' him, as we see it again at the end, telling him to take responsibility. It isn't presented like a god but still as something other than the mascot, but the unborn child as well as Anya's actual/defiant side against Jimmy
Jimmy filled out an erotic desire against Anya and then can't bring himself to live with his actions, constantly refusing to take responsibility and shooting himself in the end, believing it was the right thing
In Equus, the horses make the boy believe he can't be with anyone else as he has devoted himself to them, killing them all when ut was too much.
In Mouthwashing, the mascot subtly plagues Jimmy's mind until it's too much for him and all the crew are dead (except Curly)
Doubt this will get traction, or if I made sense, but there are a lot of undertones and subtext that gave me parallels between the two

yet another quote from equus….
you good bro
"What did I expect of him? Very little, I promise you. One more dented little face. One more adolescent freak. The usual unusual. One great thing about being in the adjustment business: you're never short of customers."
- The Joker
