MCL NewGen Ep 9 Commentary
I poured blood, sweat, tears, and money to finish this episode. I fought my inner demons to convince myself that they didn't deserved my money but here we are: with a concluded episode and me with 30 euros less in my bank account 🥲 As always, this post will obviously contain spoilers under the cut so beware~
Ngl after the disaster of episode 8 I had zero (0) hopes for this new one, I wasn’t even excited after everything that happened last month (e-girl pack, episode 8, Halloween event and so on) but I have to admit, this one surprisingly exceeded my low expectations by a landslide by finally giving some insight on the LIs about time i might say.
But first thing first, the cost. This episode was hella expensive, I spent 2604 aps, of which 1832 were free. I'm following Jason's route so I know it's more expensive than the others but I didn't imagine this much. I genuinely hope the others will be shorter and that this was just an exception given the backstories cause I can't handle every ep being like this 😩
As a Jason's girlie, I was ecstatic about this episode. For once, his presence was well-contextualized, he didn’t come off like a stalker and we weren’t the damsel in distress. I didn’t expect him to start trauma-dumping on Candy so soon, considering they don’t see each other as often compared to the other LIs, but I’m glad we got to know him better. I really hope Candy’s attitude toward him will start to soften 'cause she’s always on guard around him and it’d be nice to see her relax and trust him a little more, especially after the intimate moment they experienced in this ep.
I must admit tho the premise didn't really appeal to me and I was skeptical this would be another silly ep with all the Devenementiel crew doing stuff but luckily it wasn't. It all starts with Devon telling us that, starting the next day, a group of interns will be joining the team and it turns out these are Devon’s younger brothers, Gebril and Joen.
Overall I liked the time spent with them. I agree that there were a lot of unnecessary moments and some parts I could’ve gladly skipped but it was a cute scenario, and finally we get to meet some new characters for a change also idk but Joen's attitude kinda reminds me of Armin oh I miss himm
Since we're here let’s already get to the sore spot of this whole ep: the whole Tasha situation. I don’t care if it’s wrong to have beef with my fictional sister, but I’m honestly speechless at how she and their mom acted during the internship situation. You knew for months that you needed to pick a company for your internship and yet, the night before, you have no plans because you delayed the application?? And now you’re asking me to call up my boss at 8 pm to beg him to include you in the internship that’s supposed to start tomorrow? Are you out of your mind?!?
Also isn’t the whole traineeship supposed to be organized by the school? I’m not sure how it works in France, but I was quite confused—here in Italy the school usually guides you through the process and handles all the paperwork. It’s unusual for students to be left on their own in a situation like this...
And the mom is even worse cause she just says "I don’t want to judge you for how you’re acting with her because if I were in your shoes I wouldn’t know what to do either" like uhmm you’re the mother, not me?? If you knew about this the whole time –and she knew for months– why didn’t she help Tasha earlier? Or better yet, why didn’t Tasha ask us weeks ago instead of the evening before? And yet they’re just chilling while playing cards omg you have no idea how much this stressed me out it's so stupid but yet so infuriating like the fact that they only have a bathroom in a mega villa but whatever i guess.
After we refuse to help her, Tasha mysteriously ends up joining Goldreamz for her internship. I’m honestly confused, once again, about how this happened because the night before no company had accepted her and now suddenly she's got the job?? Did Jason see her candidacy last minute right before clocking out the office? If I missed something pls let me know cause I genuinely can't wrap my head around it lol.
What a way to twist things...
But anyway, I honestly liked this option. I admit I would have never imagined this plot for his route but I’m glad they went this way. I loved seeing Candy’s reaction when Tasha told her about working with "the devil" and I also enjoyed her reactions to the ambiguous conversation between Candy and Jason in his office watch Tasha being the first to get the hints about their situationship lol
Maybe it's for the better, we don't want to let our lil sis know we blew up big time our first solo project.
Once Tasha leaves, Candy asks Jason wtf he’s doing and he assures her that he doesn’t have any ulterior motives. He just thought it would be an amusing situation for both him and Candy. After a quick recap, we get a better understanding of Candy and Tasha's relationship. It seems like there’s a bit of a rivalry/competition between the sisters—something I would have never guessed, considering we've only seen Tasha about three times since the beginning but okay. I only wish to see more of their sisterhood but I guess we won't any sooner since she's going to her father for a while, that sucks.
After some usual bantering, we find out that Jason envies our relationship with Tasha since he’s an only child, which leads him to open up a bit about his past. We learn that he found comfort in solitude, often isolating himself by going out on his father's boat in the middle of the ocean. I admit this was unexpected, I never would’ve guessed he’d be so into the marine world - as we'll see soon in the rowboat scene. It adds a surprisingly nice contrast to his otherwise business-like persona.
Touched by Jason’s childhood story, Candy spontaneously suggests they take a boat ride right then and there, to experience the peace and solitude he felt throughout his childhood. This was a cute gesture from Candy ngl, I thought she would simply nod and listen to his story but no. This is the first time she takes such an important first step with him in their relationship and I'm proud of her.
But, once arrived tho she has to ruin everything destroying the cute little moment...
Oh my God. You strangely enough managed to get him to open up about his difficult childhood and you still can’t help but joke about him being the big bad guy? Ugh I take back whatever I said about you Candy, you're dumb.
Thankfully, Jason doesn’t seem that much bothered by her comment and they get on the rowboat. I was lowkey hoping for a cute moment where he offers her his hand to help her aboard but nope, doesn’t happen. Honestly I’m convinced this is his subtle payback for that insensitive joke, if so props to you J.
Anyway, he starts rowing and soon we find ourselves in the middle of the lake. This is where the heart of the episode unfolds imo. We finally get a glimpse into his family history. Jason opens up about his father, a scientist deeply passionate about the ocean, that tragically passed away shortly before he turned 19.
This is the moment where I truly lost it. I swear, I was a sobbing mess.
Jason’s vulnerability hit me harder than I expected. We already knew about his father, but hearing him tell the whole story was tough. I can barely imagine what he went through at such a pivotal age. The emotional distance between him and his mother after she got remarried definitely played a big role and when you add his strained relationship with his stepfather into the mix, it’s impossible not to feel for him. It's such a tragic backstory, I hope they don’t mess it up from here on out. My pookie deserves better :(
As for the special scene, it wasn't that much but I liked it. Unfortunately, I can't post the screenshots since I’ve hit the limit per post sigh but it was such a sweet and heartwarming moment. It offered a smooth transition from the heaviness of the conversation to their usual playful banter and I really appreciated how it slowly lightened up the mood without taking away from the emotional depth of his story. I have to admit, I wasn’t really a fan of the illustration. The setting and moment were adorable - it totally gave me Rapunzel vibes with all the whimsy and charm - but Jason’s expression feels off, it’s almost like he’s a villain plotting revenge rather than being swept up in the moment lol. Plus his proportions seem a little strange mmh. Candy, on the other hand, looks gorgeous so gg.
And that’s it. Afterwards, Jason accompanies Candy back to her house, reminding her that despite the little walk down memory lane, things haven’t changed between them in his eyes, and he expects the same from her. Oh, and let’s not forget she owes him an intimate story too as if the whole Ioan drama wasn’t enough.
With that, he leaves and the episode ends with Candy having her same old crisis whenever she spends a little time with Jason.
Now, I’m really curious to see if Jason opening up will actually shift things between them or if it’ll stay the same old. At this point, Candy doesn’t have much of an excuse to keep trash-talking him - he hasn’t done anything to harm her or Devenementiel, yet, and he’s actually been there to help her on multiple occasions. I’m hoping she drops the whole “he’s the devil” mindset because he’s honestly shown more support than hostility in the latest eps.
But honestly I can't hide that rn I'm more worried about the next episode. Thomas having an incident was on everyone’s bingo card -even though I didn’t expect it to happen this early- but here we are. I’ve got so much repressed trauma from everything with Lysander that I genuinely have no idea what to expect next 🫠
#i just hope this is just bv failing their marketing move#and that nothing actually happens to him so early in game#maybe we'll see his mother or iris again?? mmh#also “what am i doing?” you ask yourself candy???#you're mingling with the enemy#and admit it you love it lol#mclng#mcl new gen spoilers#mcl new gen#mclng ep 9

streaming tv is like the fantasy/fiction need for a mid list. big money thrown at projects expecting that big money can make anything too big to fail, when the reality is that there’s only so much profit to make in an oversaturated market and only so many properties that can be the number one most popular thing at a time, but no matter how many projects fail or how variable the quality of the art is, it’s never going to be acceptable again to shore up most of your projects with only SOME money and letting that “mid list” find longlasting audiences that provide your baseline business
i wish both streaming tv and the publishing industry would spend less money on more projects that cultivate good writing. i want good writing and long projects to get invested in so bad that i'm caring less and less for production
my thesis statement is that tv shows are being canceled because they cost too much money. a mid list would have saved most canceled shows. higher production costs don't mean better writing, and lower production costs don't mean worse writing
the publishing industry is asking for shorter fantasy books and is canceling series and leaving authors behind because it is throwing all its money at shiny new things that are not actually new and don't stick
all of this without investment in a "mid list" to keep baseline profits coming or to keep a foundation of writers paid and busy
if companies spent less money on shows, would they last longer? would they hone writers' skills more? does this extend to animation where the budgets are so much smaller? or is there no world where i could get multiple 25-episode seasons of arcane and i'm just deluding myself
fantasy books especially have had an oversaturation problem for years, but the biggest problem is an over-reliance on debuts without investment in originality or in authors’ futures. what this looks like is big money thrown at marketing shiny debuts or at a subset of the old familiar faces in fantasy that established themselves before the shift in industry mindset. everyone else either gets scraps or can’t find their footing after their debut. you either go viral somehow or you go home. to make money, the only acceptable projects are generic or are recognizable rehashes of previously popular but specific ideas. fantasy is considered a popular genre now, but in my opinion, fantasy has never stopped being niche, but the need to find bigger audiences and bigger investment has resulted in pushing fantasy series that don't do anything new or interesting and actively spurn good prose, but can appeal to as many people as possible (instead of weird fantasy freaks, aka me, i'm freaks, now most of the freaky fantasy i can find is in video games and a single tear is rolling down my face)
now tv. buffy the vampire slayer cost about 1-2 million per episode. star trek tng cost 1 million per episode
look where we’re at with streaming services. tv shows that cost millions and tens of millions of dollars per episode. the sopranos redefined what prestige tv meant and it cost 2-6 million per episode. chasing the new prestige mindset, game of thrones started out at 6 million per episode. today, early game of thrones’ budget from about 2011-2013 is joked about like it’s chump change, especially for game of thrones or hbo. but prestige tv reeled in that subscriber money. the streaming model today is the continuation of the prestige tv model, except that every show needs to be prestige, no matter the audience or genre or story structure. because prestige tv made money
now that the baseline model for helping your subscription/channel make money is to throw 6 million+ per episode, it's no longer a mystery why seasons are getting shorter and shorter. and the demand for higher and higher production will only mean that shows take longer and longer to make
netflix shelled out 6 million per episode - what an oddly familiar number, huh? - for stranger things season 1. season 4 cost 30 million per episode
wheel of time season 1: 10 million per episode. rings of power season 1: 58 million per episode. these are adaptations btw, not original IPs, but this is SEASON ONE money you’re looking at. i liked both rings of power and wheel of time decently, but my hot take is that both of these shows are under-written and over-produced. why so much money thrown at projects with writers at the helm who are inexperienced in the fantasy genre? rings of power in particular is bank-breaking and it was originally planned to run for several seasons
the mandalorian season 1: 15 million per episode. andor season 1: 20 million per episode. the acolyte season 1: 22 million per episode
remember that the subscription model requires subscribers to make money and requires NEW subscribers to satisfy the hunger for growth, and star wars is a single IP with established fans. the mandalorian, andor, and the acolyte all took major risks in different ways. the mandalorian actually fell back on star wars fundamentals (rather than being something net new in my opinion) and its risk was in being a show, not a movie, and the first of its kind on streaming for star wars
andor could be the riskiest fantasy/sci-fi show to hit streaming, ever. 12 episodes for season 1 that cost 250 million overall, not 6-8, explores marxist themes, and did not pull in new subscribers. what popularity it does have is purely due to word-of-mouth and plain old good writing, rather than marketing or by simply being part of star wars. it was originally going to be 5 seasons but is now going to be 2 because... 250 million dollars is a lot to spend on one season of television that didn't make you a lot of money. simple as that, even if andor is the best live-action thing disney has produced in decades in my opinion
the acolyte season 1 was 8 episodes and cost 22 million per episode, which armchair critics on social media are stating is the reason why the show has been canceled. haters will just say it was canceled because of bad writing, and fans are saying it was because of review-bombing and the diversity of the cast and crew
i disagree on some level that the acolyte is the first star wars show to be canceled, because again, andor was going to be 5 seasons and is now going to be 2, losing over 50% of the original story. even fans of the acolyte will agree that its writing wasn't the best. most fans who have seen andor will agree that it is the best-written star wars media ever on par with the best episodes of clone wars. both shows brought me over to disney plus when no other show or movie did
but in effect, both shows have been canceled
my take is that if a mid list existed, both shows should have been on it. they are part of an established IP with established fans who were going to watch the shows no matter what. most people with star wars fatigue would not have heard about the uniqueness of these shows until later and would have probably picked them up by their finales or by their season 2s
if they were not star wars properties and were original stories instead, both of these shows were still fairly unique doing things that appeal to "weird" subsets of sci-fi/fantasy fans. the mid list would have been perfect either way
i firmly believe that a mid list would have saved both of these shows. 6 million per episode MAXIMUM. ideally less. not because i dislike either show, but because i care about writing above all else. pay 1 writers room a fair wage and let them go fucking nuts for a few seasons. as long as everyone else in the production is being paid a fair and living wage, i don't care how little is spent on the show
stranger things should have been a mid-list anthology series that ran forever, wheel of time should have been a mid-list tv fantasy with at least 12 episodes per season to do any justice to those massive books but also to pay homage to the book series' roots as high fantasy that goes on and on without much of a plan and with often mid and sometimes junky writing but with appeal in that it was long-running, made readers familiar with the same characters every book for many hundreds of pages each, and is something of a comfort read now for many fans
i think that reality is catching up to streaming services and things are going to get worse before they get better
but i also think that the next "evolution" of tv should be the return of the mid list
#it’s 4 AM and I have a stomach bug and I wanna watch a show that’s longer than 8 eps per season but noooo#anime still understands this and comedy shows still understand this#their budgets are bigger than they used to be but don’t cost a small country's gdp to produce lol#i would actually be more willing to invest in a show if it was ADVERTISED as being on the mid list#like - we are literally going to spend less per episode on this show but it will have 12-25 episodes per season#writers are gonna write no matter what - some writers are good and some are bad#but spending more on your show does not guarantee that your writers are going to be magically better#spend what's appropriate for the show's content and your risk tolerance and then hire a mix of writers - experience and cultivation#as for the publishing industry just bring back the mid list in general and stop fucking canceling book series#and stop fucking firing editors and working the ones you don't fire to the bone as if being an editor also magically makes you#a marketer and a publicist somehow#the acolyte#andor#publishing#books#tv shows

talking to people about masters of the air and its truly fascinating how disappointed they were about biddick dying in ep 3. really wonder if the fairly long gap between filming and release ended up hurting the show in some weird way with some of the actors (austin butler and barry keoghan) having like career defining roles in the meantime which meant audiences had waaaayyy bigger expectations/biases etc
#massive caveat of it was a group of irish people so of course we were upset our irish guy was gone#but also i think of the amount of people who were battling a dislike of austin butler pre-show#and im wondering would that have been the case if there wasnt a what? 2 year gap#(obviously that's relies on lots and lots and lots of factors)#but it was interesting that the conversation was: did you see mota#and it immediately went to: yeah sucked that barry keoghan was only in three eps#also the issue of marketing etc which i do have lots and lots of thoughts on#text

Discotek Media announced today that their blu-ray release of Kodocha series two is now available to pre-order from RightStuf ahead of its May 30th 2023 release date.
If you're into Kodocha you'll probably know that only the first part of the anime series has previously received a US release. For countless English-speaking Kodocha fans the only access they've had to the rest of the anime adaptation has been through raws or extremely messy bootleg subs. Discotek Media will change that with their release of the remaining TV anime episodes on SD blu-ray this year!
There's been a lot of anticipation for this Discotek release as it has been quite some time coming subsequent to their licensing announcement, but anyone familiar with the source material will appreciate the absolutely MAMMOTH job that translating & subbing these episodes would have required on Discotek's part. I know I'm just happy they were able to complete it and put together this release at all.
Unlike the first series, which received an English dub, the second Kodocha anime series blu-ray will only feature English subtitles -- but don't let the absence of a dub put you off too much, the original cast are incredible and if you want to see the characters a little older and in even more challenging situations, you'll definitely get your money's worth out of this release.
As usual, I think an Amazon pre-order link will come in time but Right Stuf offers a solid discount on their pre-orders so if you want to get your hands on this BD set at a decent price then they're probably your best bet.
Edit: For those interested, the first Kodocha blu-ray set from Discotek is still available via Right Stuf and Amazon.
#kodocha#kodomo no omocha#child's toy#merch#merchandise#anime news#shoujo anime#anime releases#i'll definitely get this at some point#just a shame i can't combine it in the same order as saint tail#because shipping from the us to here is exxy af#but yeah i felt i should post about this#the second part of the anime in the US has been a very long time coming for fans#and while the video looks fairly average#the price for 51 episodes is excellent#and how often do we get older ribon anime adaptations in the english-speaking market?#if you like this content and can afford it then definitely support it#(also these eps feature my favourite theme from the anime 'ultra relax' which is t i m e l e s s)

I really would love for Ms. Stallion to do a year in Japan and try to break into that market lmao it’s been done before by 90s and 2000s r&b artists and some of them still make money over there while being unknown here
#she’s a super star here so if she gets that market…the bag will be gigantic#put out a cutesy ep with a city pop sound#let me be her manager because I’ll have her on the variety shows with Mandy Sekiguchi immediately

Only Boo starts off the first episode quite well to me. It was that "i wanna do arts and find my happiness" against the world kind of trope, but I you will never see me complain about that. This is gonna be my next Sunday evening comfort show. The meet cute between Moo and Kang was cute. Descriptively cute, if you know what I mean. I'm loving their not-so-calm vs chaos energy already. Looking at the opening scene, I'm guessing there'll be more background story slowly coming through flashback, and I'm all seated. Also, episode 1 kiss was not in my checklist for this show, but. They did it, apparently.
#april.txt#only boo#this is a nice weekend distraction. not really sure if i'm part of its target market. but i truly enjoyed the first episode.#and will keep tuning in! also. can't wait to see book. and louis with his songs/osts <3#while i did enjoy the first eps. i'm not sure i would consistently giffing the show. i might do some random giffing tho.
