I got my friend to watch the first 6 episodes of SNW and she's decided that Pike and Una are married and Spock and La'an are their children and when she realized Spock lost a sister and La'an a brother she said "See! Free sibling!" And her response to Spock Amok was "you mean to tell me they spent all of this episode making Spock and T'Pring the literal cutest while Chapel and Ortegas end the episode on what's basically a date and Chapel and Spock somehow end up together later? Why?" She also finds M'Benga's daughter's storyline disturbing and will fight someone to protect "the cadet girl". Finally and this nearly made me choke but she said Sam Kirk and Spock's actors look more like brothers than Sam and Jim (I showed her the musical episode out of context because she asked about the musical episode first) and I had to tell her the characters would hate that as Sam is kind of MIA in most of the episodes and his and Spock's beef isn't well established yet.

SO I was going to finish my thyla bang but unfortunately I had to finish this or I would never be able to rest. so...yeah. the AMOUNT of fucking in this. This is the first time I've ever originated pairings, but no regrets. The only regrets were that I cut the spock/klingons out at the very end. Perhaps I will post an epilogue, but that day is not today.

"I was listening to the SNW musical sound track and I can't help when listening to Keep Us Connected to think about Uhotty. Uhura sings "My whole life has been "fix this" and save you" and it just brings to mind her meeting Scotty and him being the first person who can fix things for her instead of her fixing them for everyone else and it's so beautifully poetic and I know it's not what the song writers intended but just the use of fixing something metaphors bring to mind Scotty who's always fixing people problems on the Enterprise as well and Uhura being the first person who doesn't ask him for for a miracle."

I don't want La'an and Kirk to become a couple in the main universe. Not only would it ruin La'an's character development from "Subspace Rhapsody" but I'm getting sick of the trope where the unrequited crush character gets rewarded with their crush if they are kind and patient enough. It's already bad enough in shonen mangas, do we really need more of it in Star Trek too? Why can't there be more unrequited crush girl characters who get to accept that their feelings are unrequited and move on?

"Ever since I learned that the entire soundtrack for ‘Subspace Rhapsody’ was on Spotify a few months ago I have legitimately listened to the entire album (except ‘Private Conversation’ because it’s annoying lol) at least once every day on my daily commute or just at home relaxing. It is such a strange compulsion and I don’t know what’s wrong with me but I can’t stop. My day doesn’t feel complete unless I have that serotonin boost from ‘We Are One’!!"

Response to confession 660 (sort of? sort of also became its own confession by getting longer than I intended lol): I kind of have always been a bit...I guess frustrated? by the take that NuTrek doesn't really "feel like real Star Trek" or other things in that same vein, because I know when DS9 came out it got hit by the same accusations of being too dark to be real Trek/"it's not Trek because they're on a station and not a ship"/not really generally feeling like "real" Star Trek. And it is true- in a lot of ways its still different from many of the other Treks, but at its core it still very much is Star Trek and it has come around to being pretty beloved.
I feel kind of the same about a lot of the modern Trek shows. I don't even like some of them very much (namely Discovery and Picard- I actually love Lower Decks and SNW) but I don't think they're lacking in Trek qualities; they are both a bit darker in tone (but again, so is DS9) but where they falter and where they succeed I think they do so in ways that are honestly pretty common to the franchise, which I adore but think has always honestly been a bit messy and produced some pretty big duds as well as it has masterpieces.
I also kind of have never really understood the take (which I've seen several times, not just in this confession) of marking The Orville as the best "real" NuTrek (not because I don't enjoy it, I do), because if one of the things that's wrong with some of NuTrek is its tendency to be nostalgia-baity (and I think that's a fair critique, it is)- than The Orville, being at its core a riff on classic Trek- also is nostalgia bait-y. Personally I think all the positive traits listed for The Orville (which I do agree with! I think it's a good show) also apply to SNW. I think it does a great job balancing interesting moral dilemmas (Under the Cloak of War my beloved) with silliness and joy (I mean, there's a musical episode!) and also is capable of fusing both together (it was imperfect in its execution, but I think its fair to say Charades was trying to do this and was still overall a really enjoyable episode)
I guess basically the end point of my long ramble is that I agree NuTrek is flawed, but I also think all of Trek is flawed and that NuTrek isn't flawed in a markedly different way. And despite its flaws, its still also got great parts to it and I think at its best it is doing what it should- fusing the core essentials of Trek with things that move the franchise forward in tone and vision (though as much as I honestly love SNW, I do want another show that's set sometime post DS9/VOY so we can explore more of that part of the timeline. My ideal show would be one that fuses SNW's general tone and storytelling style with that later part of Trek's timeline).

"i hated Subspace Rhapsody. the style of songs popular in western musicals is very grating and while i appreciate that they made more than just one song for it, the songs themselves are still really fuckin annoying and their execution did nothing to salvage that. this episode would have been way better as a mishmash of various better genres (and you could have actually had some individuality that way) and i don't get why it's so beloved"

"La'an's singing in "Subspace Rhapsody" wasn't very good. Christina Chong should've had a stunt vocalist for her to lip-synch to instead."

"I was so hype for the SNW musical episode but found it really bad and boring. Gooding and Romijn are good singers. Peck was saddled with a dull song but was all right. No one else (and I know Chong is trying for a music career) had the chops, especially with mostly dull songs and staging except for “I’m Ready” which had the best energy even if the singing wasn’t good. Discovery should have gotten the chance instead."
