What if Antinous and the Suitors were loyal to the throne and wanted to crown Telemachus. So instead of hearing them planning on attacking his family, Odysseus finds them trying to convince Penelope and Telemachus to have the latter ascend the throne.
I just think of the telemachus’ birthday parody.
That but unironically.
But the question is, How different would things be?
(What if Antinous and the others WERENT evil.)
-So the song legendary is altered slightly. The first part is the same with Telemachus. But the second part addresses Telemachus’ nervousness at becoming King. Explaining the situation of how the kingdom is a bit shaky ever since the Trojan war ended.
-Antinous and the others are there mentioning the need for a king.
-“Boy, when will it be time for you to take the throne.”
-Telemachus being nervous he says he’s unsure.
-Antinous and the others talk and mention that some training should help clear his head.
-“Little Wolf” is very different. It’s not a mocking fist fight. It’s a training session where the men are helping train him up.
-Athena appears and mistakes Antinous words as an insult and thinks Telemachus is being bullied.
-It’s only after Telemachus lands a good hit on Antinous. Telemachus explains to Athena that they aren’t bad guys, just concerned citizens.
-Athena still bonds with Telemachus. But now less worried for Telemachus. Is able to go to help Odysseus.
-Meanwhile Penelope is basically handling the ruling, but doesn’t need to deal with the suitors.
-The castle also isn’t ransacked by the suitors.
-Though the problem actually comes up during god games. Athena couldn’t convince Ares with her words. As Odysseus has no reason to make more bloodshed when he gets home.
-suffice to say I think Athena actually fails to win the god games.
-Odysseus remains trapped. After a while, Calypso decides to wipe Odysseus memories. The man she loves is suffering and was mentally broken. So to have him move on. She does that. Now her lover, but part of him mentions feeling empty. The song (No more pain) and (Something’s missing) replace I’m not sorry for loving you and Dangerous.
-The new saga is called the Coronation saga.
-Penelope’s song “my love will live on” as she is still waiting for Odysseus. But she can’t stall and has Telemachus to take the throne.
-Telemachus does take the crown. He is king of Ithaca. (Likely when Odysseus had his mind wiped).
-Telemachus singing “A king like him”
-The Suitors became loyal soldiers to Telemachus. And with Athena there helping advise Telemachus, to avoid what happened with Odysseus. Telemachus became a great king. And he even fell in love and got married. This adds an additional 5 years.
-The last Saga is called the Memories saga. Because it’s Telemachus finding out from Athena the truth. He goes to Right the wrongs.
The songs are called (“What happened” “Sins of the Father.” “Calypso” “Remember us.” “Reunion”)
-What happened- Telemachus learns the truth and where his father is from Athena. Who tells him it’s impossible. But he is going
-“Sins of the father.”- Telemachus meets Poseidon who mistakes him for Odysseus. And Telemachus beats Poseidon akin to 600 strike but with Athena’s help
-“Calypso”- Telemachus encounters Calypso who refuses to let Odysseus go. That he is hers and Telemachus fights her. And Calypso is about to kill him when she is stabbed by Odysseus. Who is a mind broken mess
-“Remember us.”- Telemachus and Athena trying to help fix Odysseus. And it’s only when Penelope is mentioned that he snaps back to reality
-“Reunion.” Where Odysseus and Penelope finally reunite but both feel guilty. Odysseus of his sins and forgetting while Penelope let her doubts cloud her mind and she tried forgetting Odysseus. But their love was strong enough that they embrace.

I always pictured Athena watching the events of The Odyssey as they happened to keep tabs on what her ex is doing but it's much funnier to know that she left him on read for 10 years and then came back to a text thread so insane that she immediately had to go fight her dad.

Zeus all arrogant: My oh my brother, all that work to get revenge on the mortal, and he beats you?You must feel so ashamed…
Poseidon, still bleeding profusely and literally vibrating from horniness: Do you think if I kill his son he’ll do it again?

Epic What If:
(What if Telemachus Did beat Antinous in the fight?)
Now before we start, I think it should be noted that while this doesnt seem like this would be a big deal. Trust me, this has some interesting Connotations
-Everything up to the start of the Wisdom Saga was basically the same. Telemachus ends up hearing Antinous comments and ends up challenging him to a fist fight.
-Though it starts with Antinous, mocking the "Little Wolf" Athena's intervention helps Telemachus even the playing field.
-Though instead of Athena realizing she pushed Telemachus too hard, something within Telemachus changes... instead of the punch that knocked him down, Telemachus lands on his feet... his eyes shift red (similar to his father's later down the line) and he nails Antinous in the throat, causing the man cough and hold his throat. Telemachus gets on top of the man and starts beating him with his fists!
-Athena noticed that all his strikes that he had been landing were all to vulnerabilities. Telemachus had his father's Strategic mind but his blood lust was different, it was ... could it be from Penelope? She was from Sparta. Could this boy have the rage of a Spartain?!
-The other suitors were stunned, unsure of what to do. Was Antinous, the one who was sort of the leader of the group really getting their ass beat by this squirt?
-Antinous' face was a bloody pulp, having difficulty breathing. He says he yields.
-Telemachus gets up, he yells at the suitors to take this man and leave.
-"Your stay in this castle is over
Make sure everyone hears,
If you want to try to get to my mother
I'll bring you blood and tears!"
-Telemachus basically saying none of them are getting through while he's around.
-And the suitors retreat. Taking the beaten man away.
-After they left, Telemachus falls to the ground, Athena does realize she did push him to hard.
-The song "We'll be fine" is played with only slight changes. But Athena says that those guys will be back and will be angry. So she tells him what he needs to do before she leaves to go intervene on Odysseus' behalf
-god games goes the same, and pretty much the Vengeance Saga is the exact same. Its only when the Ithaca saga occurs that there is a difference
-Penelope had heard about what Telemachus did and the castle was now getting cleaned up. Telemachus had actually Barricaded to ensure no one would be able to get in while he was 'Away'. Penelope sings about how the storm was a sign. But She doesnt sing the Challenge. She sings "Waiting." an altered version of the song. She doesnt pose the challenge, because the men arent in the castle anymore.
-"Hold them Down." is done differently. The men actually are attacking the barricaded castle. Antinous now with an Eye patch, is back and angry from his beating. He tells them that they will break through and kill the brat, and take what they want. Though when they finally get the door open, they rush in, only for Antinous to say his last line and get interrupted. By an arrow that pierced his patched eye. But it didnt kill him.
-The song is actually "Odysseus" It was Telemachus who was there, he had set traps and was fully equipped for war. He tells the suitors that this is their final warning. To leave the castle, return to their homes or else.
-The men laugh and say that there is only one of him and they charge. Telemachus retreats into the castle, where the traps were.
-Several suitors were killed by the traps. And Telemachus moved to the Armory. But something was killing the men far more brutally, something much more Agile and Brutal.
-Antinous, Melanthius, Amphimous, and Eurymachus, each had a small group of suitors. Though they commented that Telemachus and his traps arent the ones killing so brutally. It was then they hear Odysseus voice.
-Odysseus tells them that they invaded his home, they attacked his son, they tried to r*** his wife. Now he was going to make them pay.
-Eurymachus begs for mercy. But he and his group dies.
-Amphimous and Melanthius run into the armory and deal with Telemachus and his additional traps. Odysseus arrives and kills the Melanthius after Telemachus kills Amphimous.
-Odysseus asks Telemachus how many are left. "Telemachus asked how many he killed. "I think around 10. My traps maybe 20. Odysseus mentions that he has slayed 70.
They hear a brutal knock, it was near Penelope's room. Odysseus and Telemachus arrive. 7 men with Antinious remain.
"The old king is back from the dead.
You must be tired from your long trip back
Why dont you rest your head
While we go and make your wife arch her...."
Odysseus charges and stabs Antinous right in the gut Telemachus watched as Odysseus had slayed the other men so quick. Only Antinous was the last one alive. Antinous begs for mercy
-Odysseus did NOT like that. And proceeds to cut his head off.
-It was here that we get "I cant help but wonder" with a bit more mention of Telemachus and how proud he is of him, as well as Athena praising the boy. and then followed up by "Would you fall in love with me again." Between Odysseus and Penelope

I think, perhaps one of the funniest things to come from EPIC popularising the Odyssey is that now a ton of people think Poseidon wanted to kill Odysseus.
In the Odyssey, Poseidon has no intention of killing Odysseus. In fact, part of the whole reason Zeus lets Poseidon do whatever he wants even though he thinks Odysseus is rad and should get to kiss his wife is explicitly because Poseidon had no intentions of killing Odysseus. Poseidon wanted to pay back the suffering/inconvenience blinding Polyphemus would have caused. It's a really abstract thing tbh. How do you pay back someone permanently disabling your son? Poseidon's solution was just to amputate Odysseus from his other half; i.e. Penelope. The end game was never murder, it was always an endurance race.

(Od. Book 1: Zeus reassuring Athena that he is not, in fact, a part of Odysseus Hater-Nation. Trans. Robert Fagles)
Also, for those wondering if there's any sort of in text reason for why Poseidon wasn't around in God Games - at the time in the Odyssey when Athena petitions Zeus to let Odysseus leave Calypso's island, Poseidon was -checks notes- on vacation in Ethiopia. Yep. He left to Ethiopia for a festival and thusly was very much absent for Athena's whole "please let Ody go? Please? 🥺" request.

(Od. Book 1: While Odysseus was suffering, Poseidon went to party in the east)
I am begging y'all to read the Odyssey. It's a comedy for everyone except Odysseus and Penelope who are, in fact, suffering 24/7 365.

i've been BELTING out the Epic concept album in the car to and from work the past couple of weeks, esp. the bit where Odysseus cries out for Athena at the end of Love in Paradise, and I thought it would be funny if the goddess herself was like WHY is this person in rural NY state calling for me every day at 8:40am and after 5pm

Athena: oh, one last thing. I promised Ares that you will kill every visitor in your castle
Odysseus: oook? Why though?
Athena: they punched your son and called your wife a tramp while trying to marry her
Odysseus:
Athena:
Odysseus: *deep voice* bring it
