ya know, what made epic the musical such a joy for me personally is seeing it actually develop throughout its 4-5 year long history and I don't just mean like from the ground up and everything. I mean it in a way as someone who immediately clocked Jorge Rivera-Herrans as a fellow playwright heavily inspired by Lin Manuel Miranda's style - which fucking meant of course most of the early publicized drafts of epic were raps because of course they are (this is not meant to be a slight because like I totally get him)!
But like actually seeing Jorge apply the lessons in LMM's writing into his own original style that is befitting to the story he wants to tell - and not only that, he literally took his audience along with him on his journey with every tried-and-tested demo and audition and everything, and the actual pre-production and production process of writing an album is something we don't usually get at all, especially in something as extensive as a musical concept album!
Like what really had EPIC make it's mark on the internet and on musical theatre (especially INDIE MT) is that it was a literal Odyssey of sorts - the creation of this entire fucking thing was a journey from beginning to end and we were all invited to witness it from behind the scenes while also having many artists among fans be a part in its creation one way or another, while also observing how Jay had his own artistic development throughout - from someone whose epic was quite obviously heavily stylized after Hamilton, into an artist whose style he can call truly his own.
I have so much more to say on how and why epic became such an iconic piece of work and perhaps being the first MT work in 2020 to truly define the decade, but all in all let's just say I'm glad to have witnessed the growth of an artist - and I'm excited to see what art this will inspire in turn.

hey so i Fully Believe that telemachus was not afraid of odysseus in Hold Them Down
people may have told him stories of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, Athena's chosen Champion, Hero of Troy
but mama's boy telemachus sat by her feet as she wove tapestry after tapestry; and penelope told her little wolf stories of his father
how they met, how he tripped over himself to woo her, how he cried his eyes out when penelope became pregnant, how telemachus wouldn't sleep in his cot as a baby because he was so used to being in his father's arms because odysseus would not put him down; and yes, how viciously he defended their family when the atrides came to retrieve him for the war
telemachus? the child of the Unhinged Power Couple? who knew very well how horrible those suitors were, how they treated him and spoke of his mother?
took one look at his dad viciously protecting their home, their family, and thought he was the coolest, strongest person ever (after mom ofc)

Do you think that Odysseus has become a kind of running joke among the gods, like when we joke about cockroachs' survivability?
For example some mortal is surviving stuff that rly should've killed him, and someone on Olympus says "is he pulling an Odysseus on us?" and everyone laughs

People talking about how Telemachus is written too young and "his song is more fitted to a 13 year old than a 20 year old" is both really funny and also kinda depressing.
There’s actual reasons - in Ancient Greece 20 year old men, while certainly not considered children, also weren't thought of as adults but instead youths. Admiteddly this a more athens leaning take, but even in Sparta men weren't allowed to hold political positions until they turned 30.
In a more modern take, as a 20 year old this is exactly how my peers act and feel. The vast majority of people in their early twenties have no idea what the hell they're doing.
Obviously not so much a tumblr problem - aged demographic and all - but also both really funny and a little sad to see on tiktok. Yes 14 year old, even at 20 you will be yearning to be Great with no idea how to do so.

Taking a class on the Epic of Gilgamesh, do you have anything you would like to say to a first-time reader
The first half is yaoi and the second half is like the musings mortality and how when we die it is what we leave behind that will be remembered and sometimes our names alone aren't enough to carry us and you may be Gilgamesh killer of humbaba, killer of the watchman of the cedar forests, killer of the bull of heaven, king of urduk, but why is your face so haunted? Why is your spirit drawn? And the answer will always inexplicably be grief and the love that binds us. You live because your name lives on in my mind and on my lips and in my chest and my heart. And also yaoi

It makes me very happy to see Epic growing each day. I remember there being like,, less than 10 animatics out there so seeing all these reactions, animatics, etc. is really neat. Also how much more whole the musical feels as each saga gets released, with each character having its own voice actor instead of just jay. How the gaps between snippets are getting filled, and how it's growing into its own thing. Really a nice feeling

I want to smash your Odysseus so badly, it's not even funny. I want to see him blushing, squirming, tears down his face, moaning, and begging for help. Anyways, have a great day :D
Starting to suspect that you might actually be Penelope in disguise… 🤔

“I hate that I fell in love with you.”
But she didn’t. She found him lying on the beach, and he was real, and he was there, and she wasn’t alone anymore, and she responded with such desperation and carelessness that she hurt him and drove him away.
She’d been alone so long that she mistook the relief of not being alone for love. She felt connection for a moment - and through her own actions, she messed it up.
(Even if she hadn’t, he still would have left her. She still would have ended up alone.)
“Why in the world won’t you love me too?”
Because you can’t control who does or doesn’t love you - but how would Calypso know that? She doesn’t know what love is. Chances are, no one will ever love her again.
