No dream remembered...
— ☆ —
I did my ritual with friends today! I called upon Zeus, Hera, and Hestia for them and established their relationship for the future. Lucifer helped, so thanks Lucifer~ I made sure to make offering to Zeus, Hera, and Hestia myself as well to thank them for working with me here and showing up and not making a FOOL of me! (silly)
I don't think they'd ever make a fool of me, y'know, but it's like. The offerings they made were their offerings, so I wanted to make my own. I'm just being silly here.
Anyways, there's really not much else to say. I stream tomorrow and am looking forward to it. I'm kinda sleepy now, though... snzzzzz. SNZZZZZZZ.
Anyways that's all, g'night~

Still reeling from the ritual we did for our IRL friends to invite Zeus, Hera, and Hestia into their lives, honestly. For one thing, it was fun. For another, it seems to have WORKED! Despite the damn haunting (which we banished beforehand, and Lucifer Themself said They'd grab the three for us if the ritual didn't call them), it WOOOORKED!
Our first time performing a ritual for someone out of the system and it went swimmingly~ So so happy about that!

The doors to Olympus are sturdy and strong, given everyone's preferences for drama and slamming said doors open and sending them cracking into the wall whenever the opportunity arises. Which is why it's a surprise when they creak open during the once-a-decade pantheon meeting; less so because no entity worth their salt would take so long to open the doors, and more so because everyone who is anyone is already there.
But if everyone is being honest with themselves- which no one is, usually- these gatherings are boring enough that the bland conversation is dropped immediately in favour of craning their necks to catch a glimpse of whatever is coming to relieve them of their boredom.
When the doors finally open however, several of the pantheon murmur in surprise.
"Odysseus," Athena whispers, wide-eyed as she pushes herself off her throne to her feet. It is him- in the king's garb he was buried in but the face he has when he reached home, hair till the shoulders and speckled with grey, face oddly blank. His feet are transparent.
"What are you doing here, sceptre?" Poseidon booms, hair the color of a stormy sea. Zeus, beside him, looks reserved, observing the ghost with something approaching curiosity- eyes flicking to the lightning scars on his daughter's face and back. "Your time has long passed, and Hades-"
"It is a temporary agreement," Odysseus says curtly, barely sparing him a glance as he approaches his patron. "Athena."
Her armour clinks as she steps forward and the gods all twitch, trading glances. Owls are silent creatures- to have her aspect so affected to make noise was... uneasy to say the least. She even holds herself different than usual, something like confused delight shining in her eyes. "How did you-"
"Did you sleep with my wife?"
The throne room is silent. Several jaws drop.
Athena straightens back up, blinking in surprise. She looks a bit shifty, some of the nymphs closest whisper to each other, which- well, almost every single god present owed some part of their existence to the mere story of Odysseus loving his wife.
Would he fight his own patron goddess over it in front of Mount Olympus, though? He certainly was unbalanced enough; Athena herself looked rather uncertain of her odds, even though-
"Are you addled in death, King of Ithaka?" Artemis drawls, looking amused. "Did you forget that your own patron is celibate? Whatever rumor you-"
"No, I-" Athena says suddenly, shifting her spear to her other hand. "I did."
Artemis chokes on her breath and several assorted divine beings gasp in shock and the rest shouting for explanations, although everyone is nearly drowned out by Aphrodite's loud, "WHAT?"
Odysseus inhales sharply and pinches the bridge of his nose. "I cannot believe you."
"She asked-" Athena starts, only to be drowned out by the din of various beings screeching and shouting about the scandal.
"ATHENA!" Hera hisses, peacock tail fanning behind her sharply as she pushes herself up. "Explain yourself!"
Athena half-turns to face her, face creased in a frown. "Mother, I-"
"LET ME REPHRASE!" Odysseus cuts in loudly, and the shouting settles down into silence. He walks to his patron, eyes blazing. "I cannot believe," he throws his clenched fists wide as he growls the last word, "-you took Penelope to bed-" Athena surprisingly stays still as he reaches her, mouth falling open as he grabs her by the chiton to yank her down, uncaring of the gasps of horror from all around as he snarls, "-before you ever kissed me."
And then Odysseus grabs Athena by the face roughly and kisses her.
This time Aphrodite's shriek cannot be escaped by anyone.
"Aphrodite, please," Zeus says a few moments later, wincing as his throne reforms around him, stained oddly pink. Quite a few minor entities have discorporated, and the ones nearest to her are still trying to regenerate their hearing. "Control yourself."
Their eyes land back on where Athena has dropped her spear- dropped her spear, Ares in the corner seems to be having some minor hysteria over this, well warranted- and is also on the floor, still being thoroughly kissed by that insufferable, mannerless hero of hers, perched on her stomach to reach. Zeus inhales in fury, Poseidon close behind him as the shock wears off, lightning crackling around his fingers as he opens his mouth to shout- of all the indignities-
"If you two ruin this for me," Aphrodite thunders, warping in front of them and glaring. "I will make you both regret it."
Both gods visibly blanch at the threat, taken aback for one brief moment. Threats from Aphrodite are far worse than any of her more violent siblings, at the end of the day.
Zeus visibly gathers himself just as Athena's helmet clatters to the floor, and he gains a second wind immediately, eye twitching as he spreads a hand to the spectacle in the middle of the hall. "WHAT MANNER OF DISRESPECT IS THIS? TO BARGE INTO OUR MEETING AND THROW ONE OF THE OLDEST GODDESSES TO THE FLOOR LIKE A COMMON WENCH-"
"Zeus," Hera says quietly. Everyone falls silent, although it's not quite enough to stop the two tangled together on the ground. She clears her throat, which finally seems to get through to Athena, who had finally seemed to have gotten over her shock enough to reach out, hands hovering over Odysseus hesitantly. Still, at the noise she seems to remember herself, pushing herself up on an elbow and dislodging him enough to break their necking. He pouts at her, but Athena's eyes are too glazed over to notice, heaving for breath.
Hera opens her mouth to speak, crown manifesting on her brow as she steps in front of the throne, but closes it as the door rattles again.
This time, the spectre shimmers with a faint hint of scales that comes with a freshwater nymph's heritage and excited whispers starved for drama explode across the room as the Queen of Ithaka steps into the room, skirts hitched in her hand and panting as if she'd been running.
"Your Graces," She bows respectfully before entering, Spartan princess through and through, until she catches sight of her husband and Athena, the former of whom seems to have taken the opportunity to start kissing the wisdom goddess again, fingers in her curls.
"What are you doing?" She snaps, rushing over. The entire courtroom holds its breath. She slaps her husband upside the head, making him yelp and move back to shoot her a betrayed look. Athena looks even further dazed than before, cheeks red. "Argos has more manners than you! No wonder Lady Athena wanted nothing to do with you- ah, hello, darling, by the way."
"Penelope," Athena murmurs hoarsely, and the Queen of Ithaka leans down to kiss her as well.
Odysseus chuckles, then jumps with everyone else as Hera slams a hand down on the throne elegantly, cracking it to the base.
"Ah, goddess-" He says, clambering off Athena to bow.
"Silence," Hera interrupts, holding up a hand, eyes cold. "You will not say anything to me apart from an explanation. My agreement for your release from Ogygia was due to the assurance that your marriage was one of the truest I have ever witnessed, conveyed by Athena herself when bartered with all of us to let you go. Tell me, was it a ploy? Because from the disgraceful looks of it, this seems to not be the case in the slightest."
Odysseus frowns, face twisting in confusion. "Athena bartered with...?" He turns to look at his patron, who stares back, unspeaking. His eyes flicker to the lightning scar over her right eye as Penelope traces it with horrified eyes and a gentle thumb, and understanding seems to dawn.
For a moment, rage seems to fill him, glaring with a hatred towards Zeus that everyone whispered later wasn't met by the god king with anger, but a flicker of remorse- before he visibly throws it away behind Athena's old smile and bows.
"God-queen," He says formally, gracefully. Hera twitches a bit, and they'll all talk later about how odd it was to so clearly see Athena's younger mannerisms in the man, down to the curl of the letters. "My marriage to Penelope has never been false, never been broken, this I promise you." He takes Penelope's hand and squeezes it for emphasis, and she raises them as acknowledgement. "But... can you not argue that Athena has been part of our marriage all this time? From its start, where she advised me on courting and her on what to look for, to the twenty years she spent with both of us- me on the battlefield and Penelope in the court; to say nothing of how she helped raise our son and lived in our palace in the days after. And is she not so unbearably beautiful that even my Penelope couldn't wait-" He shoots a glare at her, which Penelope returns with a smile. "-when the chance was presented? How can you fault us for disgrace, after being so long apart from our wife?"
Hera raises both eyebrows at the impudence, the kind of disbelieving expression that hides a warning to tread carefully. "So you claim to be both married to Pallas Athena?"
"In every way that matters except legality," Odysseus says, fearlessly. He is dead, after all, what much can you do to a shade that they didn't already put him through when alive. He is sort of worried about Athena, though, as they both help her back to her feet, Penelope busy whispering compliments and updates and endearments in turn- she's not usually one to be quiet in face of a problem.
Hera tilts her head. "Ah, but you see. I need the legality, if I am to finally-" A helpless, excited smile pulls at her lips once, twice, before unfolding into a bright grin, peacock tails unfolding to their full wingspan. "-finally arrange for a marriage for my eldest daughter who has not once- oh finally, I can hardly believe this day has come-"
"I do not like the way you grabbed her, Sacker of Troy," Ares steps forward as Hera starts ranting half to herself, half to an equally loud assemblage of joyful entities about wedding arrangements, eyes narrowed.
Odysseus barks an incredulous, loud laugh, gesturing to Athena with a slightly crazed look in his eyes. "This lady has broken- and I do not exaggerate- every single bone in my body before I saw my sixteenth year. I have punched her a hundred times in the face when she taught me how to fight. We'll survive, thanks."
"That is fair," Ares steps back, hands raised.
"What duties will you provide as spouses, Ithakan Queen?" Hestia questions, stepping forward.
"Oh, the same we did when we were living," Penelope huffs a laugh. "Keep her busy, make her laugh, be of mild frustration to her, love her well, worship her-"
"I do not. Need to know," Hestia closes her eyes and raises a hand to cut her off, stepping back. Around them, the din catches speed and volume as no further objections arise, excitement spilling into the air.
"What is happening?" Athena says faintly, looking around as if she was just waking up.
"-oh, and we can get out the decor once more! Hebe, Aphrodite, loves, do you remember where we kept the fountains-"
"-finally, a reason to celebrate! Call them all out of hiding-"
"-can't believe this is finally happening, oh sister, what songs should we-
"Why am I getting married," Athena says with much more alarm and horror. She turns to Odysseus and shakes him by the shoulder, eyes wild. "What did you do?"
"Nothing!"
"How is this nothing? Do you have any idea the headache-"
"Athena, sweetheart, will you consider changing into that beautiful piece you made for the ceremony?"
Creakily, she turns her head to Hera, disbelief pasted across her face. "Mother," She says slowly. "They are both dead."
"Oh, I'll make a deal with Hades or something, you hush!" Aphrodite leans forward and snaps, before her irritation melts back into a manic joy. "Oh, what paint shall we do?"
Paint, Athena mouths, looking afraid for possibly the first time since her conception.
Penelope laughs and tugs on Athena's hand to make her turn, tucking dishevelled curls behind her ear. She wonders if the goddess knows how beautiful she is when she's flustered. "Take us away," She whispers. On Athena's other side, Odysseus leans against their patron with a besotted, helpless smile as he stares up at her, her helmet and spear in hand. She'd missed Athena like a limb, missed her deep laugh at night when they'd discussed the day's court, the dry jokes, the hands over hers as she weaved- but Odysseus wasn't himself without her, happy though they were in Hades' lands together, all of them.
"I'm-" Athena wavers, then looks around once more at all the excited screaming, something unreadable flashing in her eyes. Almost against her will, her eyes fall to Zeus, who is sitting silently and staring back at her. Poseidon looks like he still wants to start a fight, but clearly by his wary looks below can tell he will be heavily outnumbered by the overexcited crowd to not try, but Zeus just stares back at her, face blank of any emotion.
"We ask you formally this time," King Odysseus says, walking in front of her to take her attention away, holding onto her hand. His voice has strength in it, drawing the eyes of the murmuring crowd, but he's deaf to it as he stares up at her.
"Will you be our wife?" Queen Penelope asks, joining him, watching their beautiful patron shudder for breath she does not need as her eyes flick to one of them and then the other.
"Yes," She whispers and cheers erupt all across Mount Olympus.
"Finally!" Odysseus complains, and then pulls her down once more to kiss her, all three of them fading at the edges as one of the generous gods present there- who seems to realize that they're not very inclined to stop anytime soon- thankfully teleports them away into a nice room with a large bed.
"Finally," He whispers as he breaks apart to lay her down, cupping her face, voice heavy with the longing of a full lifetime and more. Penelope circles to the head of the bed and starts undoing Athena's braid, staring at them both lovingly.
Later the ones closest will murmur, as the silhouettes faded away, that tears had slipped from proud Pallas Athena's eyes as she placed one hand against Odysseus' cheek, trembling.
"I missed you," She will whisper back, and all three of them fade away to their own story, yet to be made.

I saw the naga/lamia ask and if you did continue in that direction they'd probably be more like naga then lamia
Lamia are Greek and usually only depicted as women and are considered baby eaters and seductresses who lure in young men to eat and originate from the myth where the Libyan queen lamia managed to catch the eye of Zeus and then hera cursed her to eat her own children which turned her into a half snake half human creature and as such often depicted as a baby eating monster with the seductress part coming later
And Nagas come from Hinduism and Buddhism and are semi divine half snake half human entity that can be male or female and are often benevolent
I'm autistic and love mythology so I had to infodump lol sorry
And I do not know nearly as much about Hinduism and Buddhism so I may not be 100% accurate on that regard bc I'm far more obsessed with Greek mythology
Okay, a naga definitely fits better. Especially for Optimus.
Imagine that during a trip to the rainforest, you got separated from your group over something trivial and got lost. You’re convinced it’s the end for you, that something’s going to devour you when suddenly a massive blue-and-red anaconda with the upper body of something that resembles a man, but is not a man, speaks to you in a calm, gentle voice and offers to help you find your group. You’re sure it’s a trick so he can eat you, but no. The only thing he cares about is your safety, and he actually starts guiding you back to the others.
And if we want to take this idea in a hornier direction, maybe, as a thank-you, you offer him an unforgettable night, and just like that one anon suggested, you take both of his spikes at once. Permanently ruining interfacing for him, because he’ll never again experience a valve as warm and soft as your humanussy.
...unless you decide to visit him again.

Let's do the "tell me your most controversial opinions" trend that I see on TikTok, but Greek Mythology edition. And not just "Zeus isn't the worst", but I mean really scandalized stuff.
The gods are not your OCs to play with
They are not quirky characters with flaws. They are religious figures, older than our moral frameworks, and demanding of respect
There is no such thing as ‘my version’ when it comes to gods.
You can invent stories but don’t pretend it’s myth. Altering a god’s core nature it’s erasure. You respect the collective myths that shaped those stories
Hera is not a feminist icon.
She is a queen, yes but a queen forged through divine law, not through sisterhood or modern empowerment especially people forgetting what punishments she made to others.
No goddess exists “for the girls.”
They are not avatars of girl power or aesthetic rebellion. They are entities with rituals, mysteries, and domains beyond Instagram captions and empowerment slogans.
Modern retellings flatten myth into cash grab
Dionysus isn't a silly drunk god because he can't get drunk. He controls the masses and he's the god of absolute control choosing if and when he'll cause chaos
Theseus was not a tragic hero he was arrogant, careless, and selfish.
Medusa was never a victim. She doesn't need reinterpretation or redemption arcs. She was never meant to be a symbol media has glorified her into
You cannot truly understand Greek mythology without encountering it as religion.

What is Veiling?
According to Dictionary.com, the definition of veiling is “An act of covering with or as if with a veil.”
When veiling, one is performing the act of covering the head and hair partially or fully. People veil for so many different reasons; to protect their energy, to help them feel grounded and safe, in respect of the entity and/or spirit they're working with. Anyone can veil, veiling is found in cultures and religions across the world.
When a person chooses to veil depends on their personal path. Some will veil during ceremonies, others during spells, and yet others will stay veiled any time they are out in public.
In this case, the act of veiling doesn’t necessarily mean covering the face. Unlike the burqa of Islam, a pagan veil is typically used to cover only hair, though on some paths it may be used for facial coverings as well. Also, both men and women may adhere to this type of worship.
This usually happens because the witch in question is either working with a deity or protecting one’s self from negativity or other harmful energies. Some pagans have claimed that it has reduced the number of headaches they get because they are using it as part of their shielding process.
There are many ways to veil. Most common is a headscarf or other piece of material wrapped around the head of the practitioner. Wide, fabric hair bands are also acceptable. Some will use a wig or a snood, both of which still provide a covering for the head.
Pagan men who veil also might wear head scarves, but other acceptable options are beanies or toques. Even a cowboy hat would do.
While veiling is as personal a choice as the spiritual journey of every person, it may become a more common sight as paganism grows worldwide.
Veiled Goddesses
Hera
Let’s start with the different goddesses who typically wear a veil or whose devotees may want to wear one.
Hera is often depicted wearing a veil as the goddess of marriage, women, family, and during childbirth. This goddess is more than just a wife, though. She has incredible powers, including weather manipulation, the ability to shape shift, control minds, and even drive people insane if she’s offended enough.
Demeter
Demeter is the divine mother and goddess of cultivation and crops. You’re probably familiar with her story as it relates to Persephone and Hades, but she’s one of the oldest goddesses of the Mediterranean world. She’s a great magician who offers protection, fertility, healing, and prosperity to her devotees who petition her. She’s sometimes portrayed wearing a veil, which is a beautiful way to honor her when working with her.
The Cailleach
The Cailleach is the Celtic goddess of winter. She’s a shapeshifter, though often shown as a crone. Her name actually means the Veiled One. She’s considered the maternal ancestor of all Irish men and is said to have formed Scotland’s mountains, so she’s a pretty big deal. While not evil, she has a complex personality and is wild and potentially destructive, like the winters in Ireland and Scotland can be. Her time is said to be from Samhain through Beltane.
Pagan Veiling
Veiling is an incredibly personal choice. Devotees of these and other deities may choose to veil as a spiritual practice to honor them. At the same time, you may choose to veil without working with deities. Some witches veil daily, and others do so only when sitting down to practice their magick or complete a ritual intentionally.
Magickal Veiling
Why would a witch want to veil? There’s something special about being able to wear a specific article of clothing or jewelry when working in a spiritual manner. It offers a tangible symbol of the distinction of how you’re using time. When you wear a veil at your altar, it’s magical time. When you’re not, then it’s not!
So, whether you do it in private or public, veiling can take many forms and is truly a beautiful practice to incorporate into your rituals and life.

the au finale was really good, but it did leave one huge lore question unanswered: what happened to oli's villagers? did hera smite them as punishment for not running the experiments?? were they taken by the worms like nik??? so many possibilities...
worse… the fate of the villagers suffered a much worse fate.. and that was me accidentally killing all entities twenty minutes before the streams went live

Nothing is said ▼►☼ #1
Magic, that branch of life that brings problems and joys. Mary has known both, and now she just wants to close her eyes, but she still can't.
Superman is hugging her while her body is consumed by darkness, a fair price for using a forbidden and lethal spell... Mary would be offended if it had been something less. Not just any spell would take down one of the champions of magic.
"Miss Marvel, please, keep your eyes open! You have to fight!"
"No... it can't be helped, this is my punishment for killing my brother..."
"Constantine will be here soon, you have to fight!"
"There is no cure, Superman... It's part of... my sin. But you could do something for me..."
"Please, tell me..."
Mary looks in the direction of the crater left by her spell, the place where the Captain had ceased to exist and where there should be nothing left. Tears clouded her vision... No one would cry for them.
"Billy, that's his name... and mine is Mary... Remember us, Superman. Please remember us even if the world doesn’t... Don’t forget us."
She wanted the Batson siblings to be remembered. No one would do so after that day; they would just be two orphaned children who disappeared in the middle of the battle of Fawcett, never to be found...
Billy and Mary would be ashes together.
"I never do that..."
"We believe you..."
Superman hugged the woman, what was left of her, before she completely turned to dust...
And so, the woman and the girl vanished.
In just minutes, Constantine, Batman, and Wonder Woman arrived. No words were needed... it was already too late. Fawcett was destroyed, and they had lost two friends, along with the pillars of the magical world. Captain Marvel had been compromised by an unknown entity, and his sister had sacrificed everything to stop him.
Diana took Bruce's hand to offer comfort... Everything fell into a respectable silence, mourning for two heroes.
Suddenly, that silence was broken by an unexpected, gentle sound.
The battlefield, was interrupted by a small cry.
"A baby" The sound reached Batman and was unmistakable.
Batman was the first to run toward the crater where there should have been some remnants of the Captain Marvel. Wonder Woman and Superman closely followed.
"I told you, magic is capricious," Jon Constantine felt it first, sensing a spark.
"It's a baby..." Batman lifted him from the dirt.
"By Hera, it's..." Diana cupped the baby's soft cheek.
As Bruce covered the little one with his cape, he looked at him puzzled. He had rosy cheeks, black hair, and, he swore, blue eyes... Eyes like... Him.

No dream remembered...
— ☆ —
I wrote a whole ritual for inviting Zeus, Hera, and Hestia into my friends lives (There's two of the friends). It's a long ritual, but it shouldn't be too terribly exhausting to perform. I do that tomorrow for them when I go over, bringing my tools and everything I need for it.
I can't talk too much about it because the ritual is a bit personal and private, and I can't exactly share why they want the three, but that's definitely a thing going on in my life right now!
I'm so excited, I'm enjoying myself.
I also did a banishment today to try and make sure the haunting won't be a problem during the ritual. Lucifer said They'd Themself make sure it isn't, but I'm a bit of a doomer about this, lol. As makes sense at the point I'm at.
There's really not much else to say? Most of what I've been up to has been these two things. So... I don't have much else to say. So that's all! G'night!

Have you ever drawn Frigg? I personally like to think that she and Freya are separate entities (Frigg to me always seemed like a mellow Hera)
No, I have actually never drawn Frigg. One reason for that is that I automatically see Frigg from Peter Madsen's Valhalla comics when I try to imagine her (it's the same for most of the Norse gods. It's why I haven't drawn them much. I'm so used to the Valhalla versions that it's quite hard for me to come up with my own designs for them. Except Loki. I've always seen him as more androgynous than Madsen's Loki. A bit more like John Bauer's interpretation).

We don't hear about Odin and Frigg quarreling in the same way as Zeus and Hera. But once when Odin had been away for a longer time, Frigg slept with his two brothers. There is also a passage in Gesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus where Frigg is said to have sex with a slave in revenge for a slight from her husband (the text treats Odin and Frigg as ordinary people falsely believed to be gods, so I don't know if it comes from a real myth or not. The story is not found anywhere else). I don't think Hera would have done that. XD
I have to say I'm all for Frigg being unfaithful, though. Considering her husband wasn't always faithful.

hera is a woman who does not have a body and whose shell (the hepheastus) was designed to contain something vaguely hera-shaped that would most likely have been an inanimate thing and as such she is repeatedly, affirmatively referred to as 'it' by her creator who programmed her not to be a person but to be an Object, a Listener and an Obeyer. she could have been anything, least likely of all a woman in the way that minkowski or lovelace or maxwell are women, but she is one regardless. the physical entity she occupies was someone else's before it was hers (and it did not become hers by choice) yet she made it her own and she made herself known to the crew living within it as hera, a living being who uses she/her pronouns, who uses the name that she prefers, who eiffel and the crew call a woman (or sweetheart, or blue barbie), because that is what she chose for herself, and to me that is basically the same as hera being trans. thank you hera the trans robot girl, i love you hera the trans robot girl. goodnight

Greek gossip time: The truth behind the worst marriage that ever was! HeraXZeus, the REVEALS ~
I tried to make the title like one of those gossip magazines.
I was just having a chat with @themousefromfantasyland about the character of Hera in Greek mythology, and so I decided for fun to collect below the many various theories trying to explain why Zeus and Hera have such a dysfunctional relationship. Because every fan of Greek mythology knows this: Hera and Zeus are renowned for their constant fighting and for being the worst match made in Heaven (he is constantly sleeping around and falling in love with everybody and seducing every girl and boy, she is mad wrathful and mad vain and mad jealous) and yet... And yet it is said that Zeus shall have no one else sit on the throne and hold the scepter but her, and he ferociously punishes anyone trying to touch his wife... And yet when Hera wanted to divorce Zeus and heard he had a new bride she ripped off the dress of the new bride in revenge... And yet their union was considered the ideal model of all marriages in the world, and the Moirai themselves sang at their wedding - probably to mean that Fate itself was agreeing with this... They cannot even agree on what sex feels like (Tiresias can testify)!
Mythology took back the religious teaching that Zeus and Hera absolutely love each other, are perfect equals, and will forever be united and return to each other... Yet mythology also delighted in depicting Zeus as a sleazy cheating husband, and Hera as being insulted and offended by every mistress and every bastard child, and Zeus basically being powerless to stop her from murdering everybody or driving people insane (except when he does act, which is rare but VERY spectular and VERY violent - see the "hanging from Olympus with FREAKIN' ANVILS" incident).
Scholars, academics and analysists of Ancient Greek mythology and culture have offered throughout the centuries MANY different explanations and theories. Some are very recent, some are very old. Some are widely enjoyed, others were completely discredited. Some are reasonable, others are a bit looney. I can't possibly include them all, but I want to offer a melting pot of the various views and thoughts on the matter, and why what is supposed to be the perfect, ideal, ultimate union in Greek religion ended up becoming the most dysfunctional and messy relationship of Greek poetry. [Note, I am focused here on Hera's behavior mainly. Zeus' own lust deserves its own post - but here I will start with the many explanations people came with for why Hera keeps loving and sticking by the side of Zeus despite absolutely loathing the way he behaves]
Hera and Zeus' couple is explicitely stated to be the "model" and the "example" on which all married couples and human unions between a man and woman are to be based upon. The sort of "core" of it all. So, while religion presents it in its most idealistic, positive format (yearly yet eternal union of absolute love between perfect entities equal in power), the storytellers and poets had much more awareness of reality and decided to depict what couples actually went through - ups and downs, feuds and reconciliations, stormy relationships - but mythology being mythology and gods being gods, it got magnified and amplified until we have the epic mess we know today.
Hera's main default is vanity, it has been proven many times, and so her getting so angry at Zeus whenever he loves someone else or "honors" another woman with a child is just another manifestation of her great vanity and pride - the same reason she punished those women claimed to be more beautiful than her. By extension, her many "revenges" against Zeus are also, literaly "vain" because every time she fails - again, highlighting how her flaw is "vanity" in all the senses of the term.
Hera has, throughout mythology but it is especially present in the texts by Homer, a rivalry with Aphrodite, which reflects the fundamental opposition between the wife and the lover ; the legal relationship, something purely institutional and official, versus the actual romance, something true desire and attraction. It is Hera losing to Aphrodite during the Judgement of Paris and then siding with the Greeks and the legitimate husband Menelas, against the Aphrodite-defended Troy with the lovers Paris and Helen. The same structure can be found implied in The Odyssey, where Odysseus, seeking to return home and wishing for Penelope and their couple being idealized, is the implicit champion of "Hera", and has to fight the many seductions and temptations trying to prevent his journey (the "Aphrodite" force). [Though it has been noted Homer likes to blur the lines, as for example to seduce Zeus Hera puts on Aphrodite's belt, and thus uses her enemy's own weapons for her personal gain] Hera's beauty is a chaste, majestic, "covered" one as opposed to the most sensual, nude beauty of Aphrodite.
The feuds of Zeus and Hera were just so beloved by poets and storytellers because it was a great way to create conflict, tensions, drama and epicness. And the Greeks loved drama ~
Depicting Zeus as an obsessive, frivolous seducer bordering on the rapist, and Hera as an irascible bully and jealous murderer might have been the Greeks expressing the dangers of wild emotions and the negativity of passions as a whole - as the Greeks promoted moderation, measure and reason in all things.
Her persecuting Zeus' bastard sons - aka heroes - is precisely what allow them to prove their greatness and manifest their heroism and earn their status as demigods. Thus, Hera is a sort of "necessary evil". It isn't so much that she hates these sons per se, or that she only wishe for their destructions - despite being the main enemy of Herakles and Dionysos, she still ends up welcoming them on Olympus and becoming their "adoptive mother". It is rather that she forces them to undergo the tests and trials by which they have to prove their worth and defend their existence, as a way for her to protect the official and legitimate nature of the "true" Olympian family, of which people like Dionysos or Herakles are "illegitimate children", "bastards" . (Also see how Hera doesn't seen to have any animosity or hatred towards Athena, the two of them being frequently allies or associates - usually against Aphrodite)
Hera is by nature an ambivalent, dual entity that offers the good and the bad. She gives birth to the beautiful and to the monstrous - Hebe and Ares, Hephaistos and Typhon... In the Iliad her role as the "queen" of Zeus is dual by nature, she is the faithful advisor of her husband, but also his scheming rival. She loves Zeus and reunites with him, but she also hates his behavior and tries to leave him many times - simply because Greek gods are dual by nature.
These legends simply highlight Hera's function as a goddess. As the goddess of the legitimate wife, of official marriages, of legitimate children, she hates and hunts down adulterous loves, extra-marital affairs and bastards children. It is her job and reason to be.
Hera and Zeus' relationship is messy because she is a goddess that exists in a constant cycle. It is attested that her wedding to Zeus was renewed every year through great processions, tied to the legend of when Hera isolated herself on an island and Zeus had her return by pretending to get married to another woman. Pausanias talks of how she regained her virginity every year. It can be linked to the three-appearances of Hera in Stymphal, as the child/wife/widow, which can also be interpreted as "the virgin", "the bride", "the separated/divorced woman". Thus, religiously, Hera, goddess of all women and embodiment of womanhood as the Greeks understood it, undergoes the cycle of a female lifetime every year. She regains her virginity, "marries" again Zeus by uniting with him in love, then separates from him out of dislike and anger, only to then love him again and return by his side.
This specific theory aboved is deeply connected to the common consideration that Hera used to be a goddess of nature connected to springtime and the cycle of seasons, back in her "early life". The divine marriage of Zeus and Hera celebrated every year was a ritual to regenerate fecundity and ensure the fertilization and peace o nature itself. Hera was said to have been raised by the Horae, and people saw her name as etymologically deriving from "year" or "springtime" ; and her wedding with Zeus is connected to the Garden of the Hesperides and its Golden Apples, symbols of eternal spring, eternal youth. Thus the stormy relationship of Hera and Zeus might be tied to an ancient, forgotten role of the goddess as representing the cycle of seasons, the coming and going of springtime.
That, or Zeus and Hera's quarrels were primitive ways to explain the storms, the violence of weather phenomenon, the disturbances in the air and other "celestial fights" - the disasters explained by the quarrel of the two main gods living in heaven.
Hera simply embodies the misogynistic view Ancient Greeks had of women, and as the "synthesis" and "embodiment" of all women, her greatest virtues are love and faithfulness, but her greatest flaws are anger and jealousy.
It was (and still is in some places) a strong theory that Hera used to be a "Great Goddess" or a "Mother Goddess" with a worship distinct from the one of Zeus, a more queen-and-matriarch focused cult that was in rivalry with the one of Zeus. Hera's cult ended up defeated and "absorbed" by the one of Zeus, the Great Goddess became submissive and "domesticated" by the Great God, from a natural deity became a moral and social one, but memories of the two cults' opposition remains by showing the bickering and feuding of the to deities. (Though we know Hera and Zeus were already together by Mycenaean Greece)
Hera only exists for and by Zeus, as she is the embodiment of the wife and the bride, more so than of the "mother" - in fact, legends paint Hera as not very motherly, as being uncaring, neglectful or abusive towards her legitimate children, despite being supposedly associated with maternity and childbirth. Her feminity seems to mainly manifest when it comes to Zeus, either to seduce him or to separate herself from him, and by extension she is only concerned, if not obsessed, with having her prerogatives as Zeus' queen respect and her honor as Zeus' bride defended. Thus she only lashes out and acts negatively when her positon or domain is threatened - by rivals for Zeus' affection, by bastards that could pretend to an inheritance, by Zeus himself when he produces offspring seemingly without a female presence. Some even add that Hera not being a very motherly goddess might be what causes the cycle of generational war in Greek mythology to end - as the previous kings of the gods always ended up overthrown because their wife-queen were concerned with and cared for their neglected or abused children (Gaia, Rhea), whereas with Hera she is mostly concerned with staying by Zeus' side and making sure Zeus still needs her, rather than by the fate of her offspring.
Speaking of which: some argue that the conflictual relationship between Zeus and Hera is a reflection of the ambiguity of Ancient Greece society when it come to gender relationships. Ancient Greece was a deeply patriarchal and misogynistic society seemingly working to reduce and reject women, and yet they also recognized women as deeply needed and essential, and idealized them heavily. Thus Hera and Zeus have a very ambivalent and tumultuous relationship, made of them growing apart from each other then joining again - in a similar way to the "necessary evil" theory above for heroes, Hera keeps challenging Zeus' authority and kingship, but never in a truly disastrous or dangerous way. She isn't trying to actually overthrow him, or only does so in temporary ways, because by her very defiance and constant challenges she allows Zeus to regain his authority in a more solid and efficient way than before. Every time she sends a monster or births a form of chaos, it is only for peace to return more strongly than before and for order to be restored in a more perenial way.
Not a theory per se, but in Homer's conception of Greek mythology (which is noted to be anterior to the one of Hesiod) the "equal yet rival" status of Hera and Zeus is notably due to their respective positions. Zeus is the king of the gods, and Hera's husband and brother - and thus has a domination over her... But Hera is (in Homeric tradition) the oldest of the daughters of Rhea and Kronos, and thus an elder Olympian compared to Zeus, his "big sister", giving her a form of domination over him.
"Appeasing Hera" is a deep part of the religiosity of Ancient Greece, where the wrath or anger of the goddess is seen as manifesting deep crisis and troubled times - usually linked to the apparition of monsters - and in this angle Hera becomes similar or tied to "eris" both as a goddess and a concept, and "appeasing Hera" by various means and rituals is a way to "calm the trouble", "solve the crisis", "deal with the disaster", symbolized by whatever monster or madness is born of the goddess' ire.
Also not a theory but a side-detail - as the queenly goddess and a deity of royalty, it is Hera's prerogative and place to determine the sovereignty of humans. This is why she offers to Paris to become the greatest king of the world as her gift - and by Dumezil's tri-function theory, during the Jugement of Paris Hera embodies the first function, political and religious sovereignty. And it is also one of the minor reasons Hera can enter in conflict with Zeus - such as the story of how Hera schemed against Zeus during the births of Herakles and Eurystheus, it was because it was also a matter of crowns and thrones.
And what is so nice with Greek mythology is that, if you wish, all of these theories and readings can co-exist together X3
As I said before, I focused heavily on Hera here, but I do intend on having a follow-up post talking about several theories about why Zeus is such a horny eagle, despite also being very clearly the most in love with Hera.
[Since Homer they talk of how Hera was Zeus' first love, well before his marriage to any other deity ; we also know how Hera was the last of Zeus' wives but as a result "concluded" his series of primary weddings, she became the "definitive" wife and queen of his, and all his ulterior loves are deemed as "infidelities" ; and in tales such as the Iliad Zeus keeps repeating how he loves Hera more than any other goddess or mortal he ever loved, and how he wants no one else but her on the throne by his side ; plus the story of how she decided to leave him he tried to regain her by all means, and succeeded with a wooden statue parading on a chariot...]

This was a bit ago but I thought I'd share it anyway.
Me feeling like someone is around and has something to say so I pull out the tarot and ask if someone is there. YES
Okay great who? Ask about everyone I already identified as being around and working with.
Hermes, Dyonisus , Zeus, Athena, Morpheus, Apollo, Hera, Hekate, Artemis, Aphrodite, Odin, Loki.
None of them.
So someone new? YES
Asks about....
Greek? NO
Norse? NO
Egyptian? NO
Celtic? NO
Ex.ex
Basically every pantheon I can think of. And nothing
Who else could I even ask about?? What?
i am so confused
Lucifer? No
Lilith? No
Okay so are you a Demon? (I knew some others worked with them so sure I'll ask.) No
Are you an angel? YES
Great, an Archangel? YES
*Trying to remember archangels names I heard in media mainly supernatural (I'm not kidding I did not grow up religiously so I'm unprepared)*
Gabriel? No
Michael? No
On and on we go until i run out of names and have to google the archangels and just say every name on the list until
Raquel? YES
Wonderful welcome. He is the archangel of justice which is fitting considering what was happening and what I was thinking about at the time he appeared.
This whole exchange took at least half an hour.
Anyway that was fun. Has anyone else had a hard time identifying an entity?

Sometimes I think about the Ghost post-rebels and its just so painful imagining it empty except for Hera and baby Jacen. Also chopper. But.
The memories are etched into the metal itself, the crew and the ship are intertwined, one and the same. But now its empty and quiet and hollow. The absence of everyone is so strong they feel like ghosts even though Sabine and Zeb are alive and well and still visit. I bet the memories and emotions are so strongly embedded that Jacen can sense them.
I bet anyone Force-sensitive who walks onto that ship can just feel how loved and lived in it was.
If the Ghost outlives Hera and Jacen and anyone else who might inherit it. If it sits abandoned for a hundred years on some wild peaceful planet. Any Jedi who found it would still feel the memories and know.
A ship is an entity all its own, its an amalgamation of the people who live on it and that goes for starships, sailing ships, any ship that people live on. Remember when the razorcrest got blown up in the Mandalorian? My heart fucking stopped. If the Ghost ever got blown up? Unspeakable grief. Its not just the ship that's gone, its not even just a home. Its part of your soul.
If you live on a ship you trade a little piece of your soul for a little piece of the ships' (that's how you get addicted to the sea or the stars)
