Now Supporting Uruguay Channels

 It’s time to give Uruguay some love.

WeWork, the company I work for (and kinda my second home), has a large team of developers in Uruguay. After posting about /wisdom in our #agile Slack channel, their engineering director decided to give it a try.

It’s always very exciting when someone decided to give you app a shot! But I also realized my app didn’t support the Uruguay holiday schedule like it does for USA and Israel.

This confronted me with the problem of knowing when a country has a public holiday. I had a few options:

Try to find an API that will feed me this information

Save it in a table

Hold files with that static information. 

Decisions, Decisions

An API and table felt too much for me at this point in time. You see, holidays are a very static thing on its own, as you can predict the exact dates of all holidays for many years going forward. So there’s no real need for API with tokens and all, at least until I support countries in a dynamic fashion. Because it’s very small set of static data, there no real reason to hold it in a DB table. I decided to hold holiday information in JSON files. Each country has it’s own holiday file.

Now, Where do I Get Public Holiday Data?

To find the Uruguay holidays themselves, I’ve used two sources:

Enrico Service - this is a great, completely free, no subscription API to get public holidays data for countries. I’ve used it to get the USA and Israel holidays as well.

WeWork’s day off calendar - which is displaying the list of public holidays and observances in different countries. Naturally, you’d have to be a WeWork employee to have access to this.

I was able to concoct a cute JSON file with the list of holidays for Uruguay, and here’s an example from the Uruguay file:

With this new feature, /wisdom will not post pearls on Uruguay holidays for Uruguay Slack channels. Ain’t that sweet?!
