Above is a photo I took of the partial annular eclipse in Los Angeles. It is an interesting photo with the following backstory: My wife and I accompanied our granddaughters on a visit to the nearby “pumpkin patch.” I brought my camera to photograph my granddaughters but took the opportunity to capture the eclipse. Because I had no equipment, I just put my camera into autofocus, knocked down the exposure by three stops, pointed the camera in the direction of the sun (without looking through the viewfinder), and took a burst of ten photos.
Given my haphazard shooting setup, I failed to notice that a set of powerlines dissected the frame. With a bit of back-end processing, I was able to equalize the exposure between the sun and powerlines for the photo below. My wife has included a dozen more photos in her daily blog, Annular Eclipse 2023 (everydaywithjill.com).

Before discussing the news, I want to note that emails coming into my inbox have changed in tenor over the last week. Expressions of grief, outrage, and fear are understandable—and predominant. But emails are beginning to express a new sense of powerlessness and despair about the prospects for peace in the Middle East and the fate of innocent Israelis and Palestinians. People don’t know what to do or how they can help.
First, you should know that you are not alone in your feelings. Do not suffer in silence or loneliness. Engage in community, talk to friends, seek help. Know that hundreds of millions of Americans are by your side, ready to defend fellow citizens and non-citizens from hate, discrimination, anti-Semitism, and Islamophobia.
Second, we must be honest: There are no easy answers or quick fixes for the intractable problems in the Middle East. The situation will get much worse before it gets better. Individually, we have little hope of affecting events in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank. But we can help ensure that democracy in the United States is robust and stable. A strong, just, liberal democracy in America is an indispensable condition for any fair solution in the Middle East. Everything you do to preserve and extend democracy in America will—indirectly—help promote eventual peace in the Middle East.
It will take decades to achieve peace and justice in the Middle East. But any solution will be the accumulation of small acts of democracy, justice, and determination. The solution will unfold slowly at first but may come upon us quickly. We must ensure the ground is prepared for peace when the opportunity arises. So, for those who are feeling powerless, know that you are engaged in an act of hope when you defend democracy at home—by preparing the path to a Middle East peace that our generation might not see.
We are the beneficiaries of those who came before us and engaged in similar acts of hope. Their work was not in vain, even though they did not see the blessings and liberties that we take for granted in our daily lives. Some day in the future, Israelis and Palestinians will live in peace, oblivious to the forgotten sacrifices that purchased the peace they take for granted in their daily lives. What could be better?
Stay calm. Control what is in front of you. Protect democracy. Repeat.

The Power of Online Courses in Nurturing Human Creativity: A Gateway to Artistic Mastery
In an age where information flows ceaselessly and opportunities for learning abound, the realm of education has transcended traditional boundaries, paving the way for innovative platforms that cater to diverse interests and talents. Among these, online courses have emerged as a beacon of knowledge, offering individuals from all walks of life the chance to delve into subjects that resonate with their passions. Particularly in the realm of the arts, these digital platforms have become a transformative force, nurturing creativity and artistic expression in ways previously unimaginable.
The advent of online courses has democratized access to education, dismantling barriers of geography, time, and financial constraints. No longer bound by the limitations of physical classrooms, aspiring artists and enthusiasts can now tap into a vast array of resources curated by experts from around the globe. Whether one seeks to master the strokes of a brush, the intricacies of musical composition, or the nuances of storytelling, there exists an online course tailored to their needs.
Moreover, online courses facilitate a personalized learning experience, catering to the unique needs and preferences of each individual. Through interactive modules, multimedia resources, and peer-to-peer engagement, learners are able to absorb information in a manner that resonates with their learning style. Whether through video tutorials, live webinars, or virtual critiques, these courses foster a sense of community and collaboration, enriching the learning process and providing invaluable feedback and support.
Furthermore, the diversity of online courses ensures that learners are exposed to a multitude of perspectives and approaches within their chosen field. From traditional techniques to avant-garde methodologies, these platforms offer a holistic understanding of the artistic landscape, encouraging experimentation and innovation. Through exposure to different cultures, traditions, and aesthetic sensibilities, learners are equipped with the tools to develop their own unique voice and vision, enriching the global tapestry of human creativity.
Perhaps most importantly, online courses empower individuals to take ownership of their artistic journey, instilling a sense of agency and self-confidence. By providing tangible skills and actionable insights, these platforms bridge the gap between aspiration and achievement, transforming lofty dreams into tangible realities. Whether one harbors ambitions of becoming a professional artist, a hobbyist seeking personal enrichment, or simply an admirer of the arts, online courses offer a roadmap for growth and fulfillment.
However, amidst the myriad benefits of online learning, it is essential to acknowledge the challenges and limitations that accompany this mode of education. Asynchronous communication and remote instruction may hinder interpersonal connections and hands-on guidance, posing obstacles to the cultivation of certain skills and techniques. Moreover, the proliferation of online courses has led to concerns regarding quality control and credentialing, raising questions about the validity and efficacy of digital certifications in the eyes of employers and institutions.
Conclusion:
online courses have revolutionized the landscape of arts education, democratizing access, fostering collaboration, and empowering individuals to pursue their creative passions with newfound zeal. By transcending the constraints of time and space, these digital platforms have transformed the pursuit of artistic excellence into an inclusive and accessible endeavor. As we navigate an increasingly interconnected and digitized world, the power of online courses to nurture human creativity serves as a testament to the enduring relevance of art in shaping our collective consciousness and enriching our shared human experience.

Occupational therapy’s role in enhancing Maternal and child health.
“Maternal health remains a staggering challenge, particularly in the developing world. Globally, a woman dies from complications in childbirth every minute” - Jessica Capshaw. This quote shows that many women, especially in poorer countries, face serious risks during childbirth. It's a reminder that maternal health is a big problem worldwide, and we need to do more to keep mothers safe. Graham (2005) states that failure to provide efficient maternal health services is due to the functioning of the whole health system. In this blog, we will dive deep into the global health concern that is maternity and child health. Furthermore, we will analyse the role of occupational therapy in addressing this social issue at prenatal, antenatal, and postnatal level.
Maternal health refers to the health of a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, and prenatal period (World Health Organization: WHO, 2019). Underdeveloped countries experience lack of access or adequate health care resources, these health disparities lead to poor health outcomes for both the mother and child (Filippi et al., 2006). It is further mentioned that good maternal health is important for the wellbeing of the child as their health is closely linked and the child is dependent for developmental outcomes (Filippi et al., 2006). With proper provision of health care services to these pregnant women it would result in reduction in deaths during and after births.
The journey of becoming of a mother involves active learning through observation and participation (Hamilton-Dodd et al., 1989). The prenatal period is the phase where the formation of the embryo through the development of the fetus (Arey et al., 1998). A survey was conducted in the University of St. Augustine for Health sciences that gathered the lived experiences of the women before pregnancy and after pregnancy. As some said they displayed decreased interest to participate in meaningful occupations. One lady expressed “My sleep at night has definitely been hindered because I am uncomfortable and having to move positions and not being able to sleep on my back.” The OT’s role with pregnant individuals would be to provide support and adaptation to facilitate occupational engagement and performance. With this particular sleep difficulty, correct positioning and ergonomic principles would assist to allow for good sleep participation for this lady.
Another crucial role occupational therapists could play during the prenatal period to would be in supporting the mothers is identifying the delayed milestones through education (McCormick et al., 1982). Furthermore, providing support in adapting her behaviour to meet the needs of her infant. In my first week at Marian ridge community, I observed a very disturbing scene where I noticed a pregnant woman sitting on the side of the road and smoking cigarettes. Research states that the consumption of tobacco during pregnancy can result in increased risk of low birthweight, sudden infant syndrome (SID) and impact the pregnancy term (Castles et al., 1999). As an occupational therapy student, I would assume she is aware of the dangers of smoking during pregnancy. However, if she was a client assigned to me my first question would be “Why does she smoke? And what are the underlying factors that pushes her to engage in such activities that can danger the wellbeing of her child and pregnancy term?”. The Occupational therapy profession teaches us to look and treat our clients holistically and that could involve further investigating her reasons and working on ways she can handle her habits to ensure the child’s health is of priority.
After childbirth, the role of being a mother continues and raising of the child begins. This stage is usually coming with more physical and psychological responsibilities and adopting a lifestyle that suits the newborn. New mothers commonly experience different emotions while trying to adapt to changes to their routines and this may impact on maternal sensitivity and responsiveness to their newborns (Branjerdporn et al., 2020). Therefore, OT support to these mothers would increase occupational engagement, positively improving maternal health and facilitate a strong mother and newborn attachment (Baker et al., 2024). Research reports that following childbirth, 26% to 84% of women experience mild depressive symptoms and 13% experience postpartum depression (Barbic et al., 2021). Occupational therapists are equipped with the necessary knowledge in identifying occupational imbalance such as role transition difficulties mothers would experience after childbirth, provide stress management skills, routine adjustments, and support to achieve role fulfilment (Barbic et al., 2021).
Overall, occupational therapy interventions can contribute to improving maternal health outcomes and promoting the well-being of both mothers and children. By addressing the unique needs of mothers throughout the different stages of pregnancy.

Sexual fantasies
Sexual fantasies have been a part of human sexuality since the beginning of time. From ancient mythology to modern day literature, these intimate daydreams have captured our imagination and ignited our desires. While some may view them as taboo or shameful, sexual fantasies can actually be a healthy and normal part of our sexual development and expression. So what exactly are sexual fantasies? They can be defined as vivid mental images or scenarios that are sexually arousing to an individual. They can involve a wide range of activities, scenarios, and partners and are unique to each person's individual desires and fantasies. From the classic teacher-student role play to more unconventional scenarios like being tied up and dominated, sexual fantasies can range from the mundane to the extreme. One reason why sexual fantasies occur is because they allow us to explore and fulfill desires that we may not be able to in real life. These fantasies can offer a sense of control and power in a sexual context, as well as provide a safe and private outlet for exploring aspects of our sexuality that we may not feel comfortable expressing in our daily lives. This is especially true for individuals who may identify as part of a marginalized or stigmatized group, where sexual desires and activities may not be accepted or validated by society. Another reason why sexual fantasies are so prevalent is that they can add excitement and novelty to our sex lives. As we become comfortable with our partners and our sexual routines, it is natural to crave variety and explore different ways to keep things interesting and exciting in the bedroom. Introducing elements of our sexual fantasies can spice things up and bring a new level of intimacy and connection to our relationships. While sexual fantasies can be a healthy and normal part of our sexuality, it is important to acknowledge that they are just that – fantasies. They are not necessarily a reflection of our actual desires or behavior. Many people feel shame or guilt about their sexual fantasies, especially if they involve taboo subjects or activities. It is important to remember that as long as they are not harmful to ourselves or others, sexual fantasies are a perfectly normal and natural part of our sexual psyche. One potential downside of sexual fantasies is when they interfere with our ability to have satisfying sexual experiences in real life. This can happen when individuals become too reliant on their fantasies for arousal and are unable to engage with their partners in a mutually satisfying way. In these cases, it may be helpful to seek guidance from a therapist or sexual health professional to work through any underlying issues and find healthier ways to express and fulfill our desires. It is also important to note that all sexual fantasies should be consensual and respectful. Just because something may be a fantasy, it does not mean it should be acted out without the consent of all parties involved. It is crucial to communicate and establish boundaries with our partners and respect their boundaries as well. In the end, sexual fantasies are a natural and normal part of our sexual development and expression. They can add excitement and variety to our sex lives, as well as act as a safe outlet to explore our desires. However, it is important to remember that they are just that – fantasies. As long as we engage with them in a healthy and consensual manner, they can enhance our sexuality and relationships. So embrace your fantasies, explore your desires, and let your imagination run wild.

Reading Transforms Lives
The statement 'Reading transforms lives' encapsulates the profound impact that reading can have on individuals.
Reading can be transformative for the following reasons:
Books multifaceted benefits of reading
Books emphasise the multifaceted benefits of reading. They form the basis of knowledge, empathy development, personal development and stress reduction. They allow for cognitive and critical thinking skills benefits, improved vocabulary, further reinforcing that reading is not just a leisure activity, but a cognitive exercise which has lasting positive effects.
Books allow us to gain new insights
Through books, articles and other written materials, we can gain new insight, learn new ideas and discover different approaches to solving problems or achieving goals. This exposure to new information and perspectives can ignite creativity, stimulate critical thinking and inspire us to take action towards our own personal growth and success.
Books and lifelong learning
Also, the connection between reading and lifelong learning is a key observation, especially in our rapidly changing world where being able to adapt is essential. Reading can ignite inspiration and motivate us into action. Through books, articles and other written materials, we can gain new insights, learn about innovative ideas and discover different approaches to solving problems or achieving goals.
Engaging with written materials regularly
By engaging with written materials regularly, we can also sharpen communication abilities, expand our knowledge base, and improve a mindset that opens us up to new ideas and opportunities. This, in turn, can contribute to our overall personal and professional development, helping us to become innovative thinkers, more effective communicators, and proactive individuals.
Books and their profound impact on personal and social levels
Books also have a profound impact on us, both on a personal and social levels. They serve as a reminder of the transformative potential that lies within the pages of the book.
What writing and reading 'My Books' have done for me
Writing and reading my books have brought me a sense of purpose and joy and have changed my perceptions on my experiences and my beliefs that has allowed for personal and spiritual growth. It has also allowed me to express my thoughts and emotions in a creative and meaningful way; in a way that brings understanding, clarity and acceptance, while also honing my craft and improving my skills as a writer.
Reading my own books has also been a rewarding experience. My books have given me the opportunity to reflect on my own work, identify areas (around my disability) that I still struggle to accept and understand how my writing resonates with readers. It has also allowed me to appreciate the impact that my words can have on others, and inspire me to continue writing and sharing my thoughts through my blog.
Writing and reading my books have been a source of inspiration. It has provided me with a sense of accomplishment and has encouraged me to continue pursuing my passion for writing through The CP Diary. I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to share my work with others and I look forward to further writing and reading.

Module 5
Participatory culture is something that I've ben very entrenched in without fully realizing the name for it until now. I've been very involved in online communities and Forum’s surrounding some of my hobbies or games that I play online. One of the best parts about these communities is being able to engage with people that you might never have met otherwise. Some people that I have talked with and met live on the other side of the country and we would never have been connected if it wasn't for our shared interests and a palce to express them. I think the best part right now about the expansiveness of the internet is that it allows for the small communities within it to be hyper specific to a certain group. I've been able to find answers to hyper specific problems related to a niche game or idea that even only a couple years ago might not have had access too. I think these small communities that this weeks readings talked about such as Black twitter, and queer safe spaces within TIkTok are super important. It allows you to relate to your specific group that you affiliate with even if you live in an area where very few or no other people identify with the same communities that you do. What I think is a very important part that we briefly touched on in discussion was that you can get as much out of these communities as you want depending on how much you as an individual participate. Participation is a broad term because simply interacting with the content allows for it to be boosted and the messages to be spread farther through the algorithm. The point being that you are able to foster a supportive community that you can call home. This is why I think there has been so many people talking about younger generations constantly being on their phones. I think this is in part because the communities that some people might relate to are found online and not among their classmates in their specific town that they are in. Kids are still socializing just sometimes in a different way than people are used to.

During the show, we encourage simple emotes such as /clap, /gasp, /whistle, etc., but we request larger emotes and /s posts be kept to a minimum or within your party chat or another channel, not just for the sake of your fellow audience members, but for our performers as well.
If at any time someone shows up to grief the stage, we ask that you do not engage or interact, and opt to simply report them and ignore. Griefers have always been a thing, no changing that, we can only change how we react.
During the performance, the cast and crew will likely be very focused. If we don't respond to your whispers or messages immediately, please give us time or seek us out after the show! These performances take a lot of focus for us, but we love our fans and love interacting with you! So be patient with us please! If some folks would also be so very kind, we'd love it if someone could open a cross-realm group in the LFG channel, as there are a number of people from other realms who have expressed interest in watching, even non-RP realms. We are a group that encourages people from all avenues of this game to enjoy the fun of a roleplaying community event, and love opening the doors of our events to people who may have never been to one.
ALSO, we HIGHLY encourage everyone present for the event to have Elixirs of Tongues prepared, as some of our actors are Alliance, and likewise for any Alliance in attendance! Even if you don't have any, there's usually some generous souls in the audience who have some spares on them...or enterprising individuals looking to make a few gold. Finally, please remember this is going to be in the Jade Forest, NON-WAR MODE, NON-TIMEWALKING MODE! This is very important, because if you are in timewalking mode on your character, or in War Mode, you will not be able to see us in the phase! And it will make us sad, and it will make our Hellscream actor cry. And you don't wanna see our Hellscream actor cry unless he's getting a Three-Stooges style sendoff! All in all, we're super excited to have you all! This is going to be our first major performance since we began rebuilding last year, and we can't wait to show you what we've been working on!
Coming September 7th: "Hellsqueal, the True Warchief's REMIX"
WHO: The Tirisfal Theatre Troupe...and YOU! WHAT: "Hellsqueal: The True Warchief's Remix", a live performance! WHERE: The Shrine of Fellowship, Jade Forest WHEN: Saturday, September 7th, 6:00 PM PST // 8:00 PM Central
(Original poster by our beloved friend Erialin. Miss you always <3)
Many years have passed since the fall of Garrosh Hellscream, widely referred to as only the second worst Warchief to ever live. In the wake of his legacy of failure, come have a laugh at his expense as we take a brief and historically accurate look at his career as Warchief of the Horde! Come join the illustrious Tirisfal Theatre Troupe as we perform this revision of a classic story, filled with drama, heartache, betrayal, heroics, and jokes about bronze frogs and dubious medical typos!
The show will be held at the Shrine of Fellowship in the Jade Forest (Wyrmrest Accord's shard, non-Warmode), a quick portal away for both factions on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7TH at 6:00 PM PST // 8:00 PM CENTRAL! Runtime is approximately an hour and a half, though technical difficulties may cause us to go slightly over!
It's been a number of years since the Tirisfal Theatre Troupe last performed the play that put us on the map! While we said goodbye to the Hellsqueal trilogy of comedies a long time ago, with the advent of the wildly successful Mists of Pandaria Remix, we figured now was as good a time as any to dust off the old script and give people another taste of this timeless classic from the Timeless Isles. This time around, a few things are a little different - our standard of quality in what we've written is a little higher, our production value is a little larger, and we've got a number of new and old talent alike returning to the stage! Come join us for this recollection of a simpler time, and maybe find something both new and old to love about this new spin on the Tirisfal Theatre's very first major production that we premiered way back in 2013. Whether you are an old troupie, or someone who has merely heard of us in passing... you're certain to have a Hellscream of a time. Note: This post will be updated and reblogged as more information becomes available or clarifications are added! Special thanks to @shamanofthewilds for editing the time and date details on the poster on such short notice, you're an amazing asset to the company and crew! <3 And best Thrall.

Dorie Sher Gallery Opens Its Doors!
I am super excited to announce the Grand Opening of Dorie Sher Gallery! First, let me introduce myself and let you know why I decided to open this gallery.
Currently, I'm 53 years old. Born and raised in St. Louis. Lived in Chicago from 1992-2009 while working in cancer research & developing molecular oncology diagnostics & clinical laboratories at U of Chicago, Loyola University Cancer Center & U of Illinois - Chicago. In 2010, while beginning to plant my roots in St. Louis as an adult, I had a freak accident & suffered trauma that led to my having to shut down my usual mode of activity. Competitive athletics & recreational running, biking & softball came to an abrupt halt. Eventually, the rigors of the medical field overwhelmed my physical health as well. No more long, 12-14 hour days, long haul flights & usual physical activity.
In 2014, I realized that I had another calling especially with all the knowledge I gained from my medical profession & the countless hours of physical therapy as a result of the accident & the numerous surgeries that followed. I decided to create a novel category of personal training within the St. Louis area. One that welcomed individuals of all ages & abilities which specialized in managing client-specific & scientifically guided post rehabilitation programs for those challenged with acute illnesses, chronic medical issues & lifelong limitations. We all suffer challenges in our lives, illnesses, job changes/challenges, etc. I never imagined that I would be in circumstances where I would be having serious challenges from 2010 onward. I was in a place that was difficult to explain to others. A time of grieving for the abilities lost & the limitations that ensued after my accident.
My world turned upside down both physically and now mentally. 2014 was a turning point, but 2016 was a wakeup call. While I thought I'd be content with beginning my new venture, Gateway Mobility & Fitness Associates, a gaping hole remained. I had to reinvent myself in terms of outlets for social interaction & recreation. Gym workouts, running & road biking would either change drastically or become nonexistent. I became overwhelmed by thoughts of how to engage with the community, build a social life as a single adult in St. Louis, & live with limitations that prevented my ability to have opportunities to enjoy life as I had in the past.
On a whim, I decided to try something I never thought of doing nor did I think I could ever do. I spent the winter months in 2018 gathering supplies & making an art studio in my house. I would focus on abstract painting using acrylics on canvas. Even though I didn't think much of my artwork, it became an escape from anxiety & stress related to my chronic health issues & the subsequent day-to-day challenges. While never being able to predict what each day would bring, I knew that painting would distract me from the insurmountable worry & anxiety precipitated by constant pain and wonder of how to move forward in my life. I never planned to show my artwork to anyone. I was critical of my work but it served its purpose in my life. Simply put, it is the most productive way for me to express my thoughts & emotions. Each piece is created with its own style, colors & generally reflects my state of mind as it transforms over time. Because it was so personal & reflected my emotional state, I was very private about it & only showed my artwork to several family members. Little by little, word got around & I was eventually asked if I would accept commission requests. I was not interested in making this a full-time job because of the incredible outlet & freedom painting provided me. I realized that I could only paint if I was in the frame of mind to do so & purely for enjoyment. Eventually the number of commission requests grew over time and I participated in my first art show in the fall of 2022. I realized that I had become a professional artist. It's not easy for me to introduce myself this way. How could this be?? What attracted me to this hobby and how did it become a passion?
Some people meditate, some exercise, & some, like me, try something completely different & out of the box. I couldn't possibly be the only person thriving from such a hobby & I'm certain that many others had been living in a rut like myself. I never imagined becoming an artist ever in my life. I couldn't even draw a good stick figure. I realized that everyone has the ability to paint. Where could one go if they don't have the space and supplies of their own? Where would be the place to escape & have the privilege of meeting new people, painting whatever they had in mind and not be judged in a casual, comfortable & safe manner? Where can I go by myself or with friends to hang out, paint, or mingle where everyone can be themselves & escape for a few hours without it having to be an "event"? What if there are local artists that never had the opportunity to show their artwork? What if there was a gallery to encompass all of the above. This is the mission of the Dorie Sher Gallery. While my name is on the door, I want it to be an inviting &welcoming space created especially for those who minimize their creative abilities but need an escape from everyday stress & anxiety. An environment to express themselves & their individuality without judgement. My goal is to make the gallery accessible to those looking for a unique way to meet & be a part of a community oriented & creative space. There truly is an inner artist in everyone & I'm excited to welcome others into finding their balance and passion through art.

Learn to code versus code to learn.
This reading was enjoyable for me because it exemplifies my current life as a graphic design student. I'm in the process of incorporating coding into my design process, and I've been assessing the potential, importance, and demands of myself as a designer. I do know that coding is steadily becoming a part of the design curriculum at schools, which begs the question, should designers be coders? I did not expect to be coding as a design student at Iowa State University, but I was introduced to Python in Drawbot and Javascript in P5.Js has significantly altered my design style and expanded my eyes to new avenues of creativity.
Traditionally, designers and coders have been considered two separate entities in the world of digital design. Designers focus on aesthetics and user experience, while coders are responsible for implementing the design into a functional website or application. However, with the rapid advancement of technology and the increasing demand for digital products, the line between design and code is becoming increasingly blurred. This has led to the debate on whether designers should be able to code. From my personal experience, I think coding is a great skill to have, but I am still indifferent about whether designers must be able to code.
One of the major advantages of designers who can code is that it allows them to have greater control over the final product. When a designer knows how to code, they can create designs that are not only visually appealing but also functional and user-friendly. This is because they better understand the technical limitations and possibilities of the platform they are designing for. For example, a designer who knows how to code can design a website with a more efficient and responsive layout, which can lead to better user engagement and satisfaction. Additionally, designers who can code can work more closely with developers, which can lead to better communication and collaboration.
A line of thought that interested me was that the idea of "Learn to Code" is based on the belief that programming is necessary for people who have lost their jobs due to technological advancements. Apparently, this is seen as a way for these people to serve the economic interests of capitalism through "retraining." There seems to be a condescending attitude toward coders. Conversely, coding is seen as semi-skilled labor and part of the workforce rather than a profession. However, I think coding is more than a skill to add to your CV but a craft. Despite how tedious and repetitive coding can be, it is an art of creative expression, just like creative coding.
However, I know that some of the main drawbacks of coding are that it can be time-consuming to learn how to code, especially if a designer has no prior experience like me. This means that designers may have to spend extra time and resources learning how to code, which can take away from their design work. Additionally, some designers may simply not be interested in coding, and forcing them to learn could decrease motivation and creativity.
In conclusion, the question of whether designers should be able to code is not a simple one. While there are certainly advantages to designers who can code, there are also some drawbacks. Ultimately, it comes down to the individual designer and the specific project they are working on. Learning how to code may be essential for some designers' work. For others, it may not be necessary. However, it is clear that as technology continues to evolve and become more integrated into our daily lives, designers with a basic understanding of code will have an advantage over those without.

Cybernetics, the science of communications and automatic control systems in both machines and living things.
Applying concepts from STEM and the humanities as well as the individual treating their own emergent existence, life, ethology, and conscious experience, frame generation, as an ongoing engineering project using methods externally reviewed via the scientific community and using skills developed in US, attentional control systems. machine learning and statistical analysis all being subject to peer review and cybernetic modulation should provide a host of benefits including raising the quality of an individual enities personal experience to a much higher level with the quality of self actualization being more easily facilitated and also bestowing the ability adapt to novel or challenging/stressful, potential or real, acute or predicted, situations effectively and efficiently a significantly faster rate. This is a very topical area of interest in our current situation and cyberphysical reality right of you reading this
The widespread uptake and use of US and its "black box" modules of perspective theory and personal engineering would allow for both a universal improvement in quality of life of all while still respecting personal differences in belief and self-expression which is essential to avoid a monolithic cultural force derived from accelerating and more coercive social pressures resulting in a homonormative general populace without the awareness of their own rights and capabilities enabled by STEMs accerating progression and its very real acute impacts on almost all aspects of our lives
The total amount of all past and current human experience and the interactions of their respective axioms integrated significance, culture is theoretically impossible to measure and understand. With the exponential increase in the rate of science and culture being created at an exponential function of some increasing rate, the current human faces a staggering amount of information, cognitive/behavioural options, and problems to manage and the challenges facing humanity are only going to grow in number and complexity. There is an explicit underutilization of resources and cognitive technologies freely available to the general public currently and entities that exploit these developments are only going to have increasingly coercive and unbalanced advantages in finance, marketing, ethology pressuring, and intellectual property. Establish frames of perception via the methodologies created by an individual themselves will enrich possible net frames found in a social environment.
If you reduce and classify all of human experience into a few manageable well defined domains of place holder or black box axioms e.g. technology, engineering, science, culture, philosophy, medicine, maths statistics etc.) then it is possible to via perspective theory to start creating recursive ontologies representing each domain into a meta ontology that is able to reconcile both factual information and context aware experience of interacting with these domains via application of the principles outlined in the MM. It is possible to integrate various peoples MMs as well as digitized axiomatic ontologies to create a functional and engaging meta framework to enhance personal experience, communication, and integration with a more objective view of reality as well as paradoxically able allowing an individual utilizing US to define and create their own subjective experience and value
There is the danger of over reduction of experiential aspects of human lives but it is clear that while the qualia established in an individual establishing their own frame out of their own autonomy, that this approach respects both a cohesive social collective of well adjusting individuals and the individuals unique experience that they themselves are able to define their own EISOA boundaries of in the context of modelling the emergent net existence and functional cognitive and behavioural units of an individual as a viable system model
“Any open or closed system that can and perceive, assign, remove or modify meaning to parts of own system or other any other systems are a candidate for personal engineering
Current philosophy is extremely biased towards the human first person PoV perspective and if groups of people implement this system their lives there could be unprecedented new levels of complexity of communication and control processes between actors/entities
This model of human experience I proposed can be understood with the study of perspective in art. Using mathematics, deductive, inductive and abductive logic in abstraction in parallel with reduction along with any basic taxonomy/ontology.
It is possible to turn most things that can be described or observed to be remade into an axiom. This includes the external and internal and the objective, subjective, and inductive. It is also possible to construct modules of axioms that don’t represent anything yet existing in objective reality and then adjust or conform these extra external abstract axiomatic models to correspond to any EISOA phenomena or to generate new ontologies that may generate some insight or functionality
Axioms do not even have to resemble anything that you think of that exists or has meaning or use to you. It is possible to just construct an null axiomatic frame work to just play around with (experiment with sets and mental geometry) or to just retrofit these axioms to something interesting or useful later on. After all, if it exists in your abstract internal experience, these axioms are as real as you make them.
Disregarding some fundamental logic, epistemological assumptions, and understanding of STEM via establishing primary axioms categorized as self-evident, sound, and valid, it is possible to create a set of place holder axioms as an ontological scaffold that can be further refined to represent metaphysical categorizations of objective, subjective, or abstract reality in either egocentric and/or allocentric modes. An important consideration is that axioms in perspective theory are by their own nature arbitrary and not intended to fully describe objective, subjective, or abstract internal or external reality in their entirety, rather perspective theory is intended to be a potentially semi-automated on-going process that continues to approach the theoretical limit of what can be deduced or assumed about the nature of reality. However, the mere ability to construct a set of axioms requires a neurocyberphysical correlate that logically exist to support their embodiment in a cognitive or digital architecture that recursively indicates that these axiomatic sets are sound and viable which is an ad hoc iteration of “I think, therefore I am”.
One point can be described with multiple axioms and suspension of disbelief can be used to reduce conflicts. It is logical to assume that if opposing networks of axioms are embedded in a recursive meta framework that two or more ontologies that have axioms that conflict and would on the surface be incompatible would still be able to be nestled in a more expansive supporting ontology. A terrible example is the synchronicity of the left and right cerebral hemispheres despite each hemisphere containing brain regions that have opposing functions with the brain as a whole reconciling hemisphere function into one gestalt holistic integrated seemingly non modular experience. Perspective theory has the flexibility and capability to be adapted into already existing ontological frameworks such as the cybernetic viable system model which was inspired by the evolutionary psychology-based theories about emergent levels of brain function and their resultant ethology and inducive adaptability of the host organism (typically specified as humans past the age where theory of mind develops).
These sorts of protective yet cultivating frame parameters are featured quite heavily in paracybersocial networks of deceit yet these different agents can bundle frames in such as way that there isn’t much conflict between opposing sides or memeplexes and if this doesn’t reduce conflict then there should be many other interventions carried out by a handle
These axioms can be arranged via taxonomic/set theory (logic) principles to form a network or grouping of axioms which can have any logical rules assigned to an axiom or arrangement of interrelated axioms, arranged in any order or arrangement described in mathematics. As perspective theory is also intended to be utilized “offline in vivo”, this enables perspective theory the flexibility and functionality to be reconstructed mentally in a model form that is personable to an individual utilizing perspective theory
The axiom systems themselves can be abstracted or consolidated into new axioms to form systems of near infinite complexity for various purposes.
I think that the real importance of this document is to highlight how easily perception of reality can be changed how that certain ethnologies lead to abrupt change in the number of ways one can interact with reality
However, before you get carried away it would be a lot easier to start using already defined axioms. Sciences, and normatively defined areas of human knowledge and experience and so on. There has been extensive work and research on developing ontology for many fields of human knowledge, there are many interdisciplinary ontologies, there are specific software and data sets catering to the development and automation of ontology formation, and there are meta ontological frameworks which could be used in conjunction with perspective theory to model as many domains of existence and human experience as possible.
Perspective in art can be used to get a more realistic and accurate representation of a perceived subject. Art is an essential tool to establish what could be and to also try to see if it is possible to ground these simulacrums in a foot hold of reality. Perspective theory in PT is no different, it is simply the art of discerning what is possible based on what you know
To get an idea of how this theory would work in vivo. In perspective theory (the canonical art theory) drawing the subject is drawn to appear more realistic as being displayed on a 2d medium, one or more vanishing points to give the illusion of perspective on a flat surface
Perspective in this case changes the eventually projected diagram of the box. It is the same box in each case, just in this case different points of axioms have been chosen to construct the final image. Perspective theory just means adding in new axioms as a point of perspective to construct a new model from. Adding and Removing axioms can radically change the resultant model allowing for deep insight into interesting relationships and emergent properties.
Oral Human language of just spoken word and no visual contact is conventionally one dimensional and there are many ongoing efforts to create poly dimensional communication pluripotent control systems
Roughly speaking We see a “3d” world in two dimensions
However, humans can think and operate in many dimensions, in this context include modular/non modular examples (define and provide examples).
Due to the vast interconnectedness in the brain conscious experience is not truly 3d either rather conscious experience follows a dense interconnected and twisted wireframe model making it difficult to visualize purely 3d shapes from a first-person perspective
An axiom in perspective theory can be a science or a branch of the sciences such as physics, biology, and chemistry. Going through day-to-day life with these axiomatic heuristics in the forefront of your mind can fundamentally change the way how you view yourself, your experience, and environment throughout a day functionally employing PE
Traditionally perspective in art has been used in a Euclidean sense however if you roll with subjectivity for a bit, you could represent anybody's view or any way of looking at the world as a new dimension/axiom. Using the systems described earlier you can paint or model a “picture” in your mind of a subject (x) described in many “dimensions” 3d perspective, colour, biology, its materials, its physical properties, the public opinion, and any other sets you come up with while minimising the occurrence of cognitive dissonance and keeping the total model logically consistent. How to enact this process had been described in my earlier post about how to develop a BBC Sherlock esq mind palace
Theoretically allowing any consciousness to utilize a method that could be potentially more effective at describing more aspects reality than science (Due to the equal importance and use of deductive, inductive abductive logic and a small pinch of subjectivity held in check by the principles of pure logic and mathematics). It is just a mathematical fact that half the human population has an IQ under 100 but I believe that application of US in peoples lives will not lead to discrimination as US is modular and an individual does not need to know every aspect of research or thought that went into creating an axiom as any axiom, module, system, or heuristics can be converted into a black box of which someone doesn't need to understand why or how whatever particular mechanisms function in order to derive benefit from it. In this way, I think that US is a non-discrimatory and equitable system.
A healthy human’s body, including the brain is a complicated machine and powerful supercomputer
Everything we are consciously aware of (Thoughts, feelings, internal narrative, sensations, senses and perceptions) is a highly abstracted model. An edited and streamlined gestalt UI (selected for by natural selection to reduce the cost of adapting to a complex environment and promoting choices best for the organism's fitness), the system of the brain that has executive control decisions aka “you” the end user. Input is done on conscious attention and focus of the executive control system on certain aspects of the UI.
This model can predict the nature of some of the structures of the brain and their function
The selection pressure offered as an explanation for the evolution and development of consciousness will also yield some hypotheses to be tested.
This model is abductive in nature and need to pass critical tests and become highly corroborated considered to have the status of a true scientific theory
However even if the model isn’t robust, it still has some applications as a conceptual model to utilize in personal endeavours.
Assuming this model to be true or suspending disbelief, this model can be abstracted to form an axiom or “single unit” in a completely different model using a form of mathematics and logic.
Each domain can be abstracted to an axiom
These core axioms of human experience can be used to construct an easy to manage, modify and comprehend model of the totality of experience and to study the interactions of the axioms and any emergent properties.
Theoretically with this sort of modelling. With the same axioms and the same rules of interaction and logic. People would be able to avoid a lot of the issues of subjectivity.
Due to its nature, the model is not purely a truth-seeking enterprise and has some aspects of mathematics and art/aesthetics
The logical implication of people actually read this and decide to try out US moduleses and establishing will result in collaborativeongoing development and refinement core mechanisms and functionality as well as collectively being able to start actual quantification of egocentric/allocentric internal/external objective/subkective/abstract gestalt and non gestalt reality and the correlating cognitive and mental phenomena/experience and will slowly characterize inner mental physics of conscious awareness and experience.
PT and PE assumes that all subjective experience is subject to quantification and qualification, even if this can only be achieved via an abstraction of these states or phenomena until PE/PT has developed to the point where this data can be extrapolated. Another key mechanism involved in PE/PT is the use of ongoing and holistic biometry in order to create as much data points possible allowing an individual or researcher to reconstruct the exact frames and qualia that were experienced at a given point of time.
If my theory about physical monism is correct then it should be relatively more straight forward to be able to “trace” the developing ontology of experience, behaviours, and cognitions. An example of this is the exposure of a host to a novel word or association and tracing this learning to a subsequent ethological instance where this word or association is referenced or used in some sort of communication and cybernetic based control system or secreted to the cyberphysical environment memetically. Logically every word a human knows or can utilize has to either be learned or synthesised based on linguistic logic (or just a mistake))(but a mistake is still a creative iteration of a previous cyberphysical event)
Some philosophy is extremely biased towards the human perspective. One key experiential phenomenon experienced when manic is the misattribution of allocentric interactions to a egocentric frame. This indicates that there are frames where an individual does not consider themselves as an agent in a social interaction
However, the model of human experience I proposed earlier can be more easily understood with the study of perspective in art. Using mathematics, deductive, inductive and abductive logic in abstraction in parallel with reduction along with any basic form of taxonomy. Anything* that can be described can be remade into an axiom. These axioms can be arranged via taxonomic principles to form a network or grouping of axioms which can have any logical rules assigned to any axiom arranged in any order or arrangement described in mathematics. The axiom systems themselves can be abstracted or reduced into new axioms to form systems of infinite complexity.
However, before you get carried away it would be a lot easier to start using already defined axioms. Sciences and so on
In perspective drawing the subject is drawn to appear more realistic one or more vanishing points to give the illusion of perspective on a flat surface
Human language is traditionally one dimensional
We see a “3d” world in roughly two dimensions
However, humans can think in multiple more dimensions and experience intertextuality
In this context, an axiom supergroup such as science or the general shared culture of human a demographic can be represented as a dimension
Perspective in art can be to get a more realistic and accurate representation of a perceived subject
However, in all human experience can be argued to be perceived
Traditionally perspective in art has been used in a Euclidean sense however if you roll with subjectivity for a bit, you could represent anybody's view or any way of looking at the world as a new dimension. Using the systems described early you can paint a “picture” in your mind of a subject described in many “dimensions” 3d perspective, colour, biology, its materials, its physical properties, the public (or a normative shared perceptual value assignment) opinion while minimising the occurrence of cognitive dissonance.
The MM is a 4D mental reconstruction utilized to quickly and efficiently draw upon cognitive heuristics that might normally be inaccessible in day to day in vivo living
Input is done on conscious attention and focus of the executive control system on certain aspects of the UI
This model can yield predictions and hypotheses that can be subjected to the scientific method
This model can predict the nature of some of the structures of the brain and their function
The selection pressure offered as an explanation for the evolution and development of conscious will also yield some hypothesis to be tested
This model is abductive in nature and need to pass critical tests and become highly corroborated considered to have the status of a true scientific theory
However even if the model isn’t robust, it still has some applications as a conceptual model to utilize in personal endeavours
Assuming this model to be true or suspending disbelief this model can be abstracted to form as an axiom or “single unit” in completely different model using in a form of mathematics and logic
The total amount of all past and current human experience, culture is impossible to measure and understand. With the exponential increase in the rate of TESC being created the current human faces a staggering amount of information and problems to manage and the challenges facing humanity are only going to grow in number and complexity
If you reduce and classify all of human experience into a few manageable well-defined domains with (eg technology, engineering, science, culture, philosophy, medicine, maths statistics... etc.)
Each domain can be abstracted to an axiom
These core axioms of human experience can be used to construct an easy to manage, modify and comprehend model of the totality of experience and as much of subjective, abstract, and objective reality as possible and to study the interactions of the axioms and any emergent properties.
Hopefully the model can provide an individual with a far greater and deeper understanding of themselves, others, society and the universe they live in.
The model also can be used to make and test predictions
As the model is based on axioms, the model itself can be changed in a similar way by removing axioms, adding new ones or changing existing ones potentially allowing for very powerful and complex simulations for exploring the big questions and even the small ones.
Using Perspective theory, the Mind Map, Personality engineering, and treating the net emergent sum of self as an viable system model all collate to form a system of systems which have undeniable efficacy in promoting an actor to realize their potential to self actualize, be able to cultivate rxperiential frames of their own preference and volition, ensure critical management and encoding of all the new information and knowledge we are getting exposed to daily, and vastly increase personal functionanity and survivability given our very uncertain future
Theoretically with this sort of modelling. With the same axioms and the same rules of interaction and logic. People would be able to avoid a lot of the issues of subjectivity.

Establish Influence at Work: Take Your Leadership to the Next Level
Each team member in the workplace has some degree of influence.
Frequently, those with higher-ranking titles are the more powerful. This can impact employee behavior and is particularly true in business cultures.
For instance, if a senior boss consistently works late into the night, their subordinates will frequently do the same.
The same is true if a boss promotes a positive work-life balance.
Assume they regularly arrive at the office on time to pick up their children. Their employees will do the same. Additionally, it might make their lives at home and work happier.
However, leaders and how much time they spend at work differ from where the advantages of being an influencer begin and end.
The following are a few of the most significant advantages of gaining influence at work:
You have a greater chance of getting noticed, promoted, and given a raise. In a gathering, influential people stand out. This may result in quicker promotions and pay increases.
Your capacity for teamwork increases. Influential people may make everyone in a group feel like they belong. Your team will function better and be happier when everyone feels welcomed.
Your connections with bosses and coworkers will grow stronger. A prominent individual is respected to some extent at work. This may facilitate establishing and sustaining partnerships.
What to stay away from when influencing others at work
There are a few points where it's simple to err when learning to increase influence at work.
To avoid making the following mistakes when gaining influence, keep these tips in mind:
1. Don't take things personally or lock yourself off from criticism.
It's critical that both your coworkers and bosses feel free to express their opinions to you. They ought to be able to criticize you constructively without making you feel threatened.
2. Avoid being unreachable.
Attempt to convey to employees in all departments that you are accessible and interested in them. This applies to staff members whose titles are above and below your own.
Your network of influence will grow as you make more contacts at work.
3. Avoid being sidetracked.
Digital distractions are continually hampering your efforts to increase your impact. First off, we interact with one another less frequently due to the constant availability of online entertainment.
Then, when we do engage in social interaction, phones and laptops are frequently both physical and mental obstacles to meaningful communication.
Distractions should be left behind when you are among coworkers, so cut through the digital noise. This makes sure they are heard and that their time is respected.
4. Avoid having hostile body language.
How we physically present ourselves to others communicates our interest in and openness to them.
You can express your want to be left alone by crossing your arms, avoiding eye contact, or looking down. Instead, make eye contact with a kind face while opening your body.
You don't need to be a C-suite executive to be influential at work.
And right now is the ideal time to begin enhancing your reputation at work.
Utilize these tactics to increase influence and gain the advantages of a more harmonious, productive team.

based on their birth charts! s2
✧*:.。. t/n: i’ll be using SIDEREAL astrology on this one. it’s also important to say that when we talk about romance in astrology we have to fully analyse the couple’s birth charts individualy at first and only then apply compatibility analysis so we’re able to check out the synastry overlays.
✧*:.。. t/n: kinda proofread.
firts of all, i'll be taking a different approach to minho's birth chart as his' way different from chris'. with him we're gonna look at other placements.
let's use Lacan (1985) as a method to examine the relationship he has between the "i" and the "others". when we look at a Möbius strip it's possible to see that if we turn one side of the two surfaces of the band, we find ourselves outside, while the other finds itself inside the circle. which leads us into thinking about how much of "i" is in the "other" and how much of the "other" is in "i". even if we look at houses of the self, it's percepcion will only be seen on others. our notion of individuality is created trough the mirror offered by the other (the mirror stage).
the basics:
someone who has the sun in gemini, libra or aquarius;
moon in cancer, scorpio or pisces. leo and aquarius moons are a NO;
venus in aries, aquarius or sagittarius;
jupiter in gemini.
obviously there’s way more aspects to look into to see if a relationship would work but i’d rather not go too deep into it right now.
a person who above all things is his friend first. he wants to make friends with the person he likes because he's not the most romantic.
someone full of surprises, who excites him in differents ways everyday. boi wants an adventurous and unique love. he loves the drama and the unexpected.
a person who has knowledge about unusal things/likes to read about all types of things. interesting personality is a MUST for him. he loves being around strange people because he doesn't want to be bored. when it's about fun he likes to engage in all sorts of not-usual activities, what seems the strangest is also what’s best.
not-into-fairy-tales-romance type of person. he wants to be around someone who's interesting and makes him curious, so their meetings are most of the time unusual. i don't think you should expect the whole wine and dine type of thing from him, specially because he can give you way more. <3
someone who likes being around groups and is good at socializing. i know this can trigger some people but hear me out, he's happy when collaborating with others and functioning in groups. when he's having fun he wants to be part of the noisiest events, so it’s normal to see him at concerts or big art related events.
a non-judgmental person. it's not that he's scared of you "not accepting" him or whatever, believe me he does not care about this. he has to live to the fullest and to be unusual. he expresses his creativity in his own way. he wants to feel excitement when it comes to a relationships, so if you're too worried about what other people will think it won't work.
a person who wouldn't be a strict parent, if it's a long-term relationship we're talking about. his kids are very likely going to have strong aquarius/uranus energy on their birth charts, meaning his chiquitos would be as accentric as he is. he wants his children to express their individuality and be themselves. he's really good with children as well, having a great way of communicating with his kids, making them mentally strong and independent. yet he may tend to stress his kids with education stuff related cus he feels they should pursue their interests. cool dad™. will be good friends with his kids (the children will be as funny as he is).
someone who's not traditional. a rebel when it comes to love and don’t prefer to date the traditional way. he wants to fall in love with your mind. his dating ways can be unusual, maybe online since he has a kick for technological advancements. he can be strange when it comes to sex as well.
but is still a 100% monogamy. the king needs to rule ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. he wants to be the center of attention, he can be a bit domineering even. he may be a bit possessive or jealous, but tries to hide it. expects absolute loyalty from you. his kinks? a lot of love, affection, and admiration.
a person who's not scared of experimenting. he wants to try everything at least once.
a "modern" person. minho has always been interested in technology. he gives me big nerdy energy. he's quick to respond to his creativity urges.
someone who has a longing for learning. he enjoys traveling and learning about technology, psychology, philosophy etc. deep and philosophic conversations are a must (but don't get it twisted he enjoys humor more than anything). he's unhappy with what he's being given, he's always looking to improve things and his thoughts.
a person who's comfortable with silence as well. even tho he loves having fun with other people he's still kinda a loner who doesn't need to interact with other humans or to talk very much.
someone passive. would like it better if the person's willing to give him the spotlight. wants to be paided attention to, wants you to worship him. his fantasies probably revolve around devotion. ofc he enjoys giving his effort to you as long as he receive the same back, too. disobeying is a no.
a feminine and elegant person. rude or harsh behavior and crudeness about sex are a no. you must have a sparkling physical appearance as well.
easy conversationalist. def not into monosyllabic communicators. he's prideful, he won’t back off from a conflict that involves his own principles so it's essential for you to be good with words, too. fights can be commom in the relationship.
someone who enjoys praising him. don't forget to show your appreciation for all that he’s doing. wants you to see him as the confident man that he is and the man that will fulfill all your dreams.
a 100% honest person. you deceive him, he will just leave and not turn back. he finds it hard to forgive. again, he wants his partner to worship him. he works hard to make sure you leave idolizing him, so his feelings will get very hurt if he finds out later on that you were “faking” things. he will feel inadequate and insecure.
patiente. he can be easy to offend or to be hurt quite easily. you may need to walk on eggshells sometimes. when you first meet him, he might come off as a bit unattainable but don't be discouraged.
a person who doesn't get scared by his feelings. when he's actually in love, he will fall head over heels. if he thinks you're a match he wants to make sure nobody else will ever get you. he can easily get caught up in the moment and be impulsive. he wants to attract your attention as soon as possible after he realises he loves you, and it will be in an obvious and eccentric way. he wants you to remember him for a lifetime. his placements makes him one of the most emotional individuals, he feels love, anger, disappointment, happiness and so on, at a much greater level.
someone who stands out. he has always attracted a lot of attention since he has a gravitational energy, so it won't be just anyone who's going to catch his eyes. as a child, he felt very different from the people he was surrounded by. he loved and still love anything that is labeled as odd by others and he likes to feel like he's strange.
someone who's interested in humanitarian work.
a person who's flexible. he needs someone who's willing to take risks with him. someone who's in to enjoy the ride.

Hi! I saw on a post that you're agender and I'm kinda questioning my gender (again) but what interested me more about that post was that you said you believe that gender is a social construct and I'm not really familiar with that theory. I was wondering if you could explain to me what the whole idea is? (bc I kinda only feel like a have a gender in social situations? In my head, my dreams and how I picture myself in the future, I'm genderless idjskahwksjejensj) Sorry for bothering you if I did.
This is a BIG topic and it opens a LOT of wormholes.
We’re gonna do this in pie slice statements that will hopefully help explain what I mean. Please keep in mind I’m going to simplify many things for the sake of readability.
1) What is a social construct?
Social constructs are ideas that are negotiated by social groups. Something being a social construct does not make it ‘not real’.
For example, money is a social construct. Yes, we have cash - coins, credit cards - but these are physical props that are REPRESENTATIVE of the idea of currency. You have some form of credit to your name - the money is a socially agreed-upon idea of value being represented by bills in your hand, by numbers in your bank account.
[Description: Two humanoid figures are standing side by side. The right-side figure is holding a rock in its hand.
Right side figure: Let’s agree that this shiny rock is worth 2 sheep.
Left side figure: Sounds fake but ok.]
Technically, countries are also social constructs. We, as a society, negotiate what a country is, and this can be changed.
[Description: Two figures are standing on either side of a dotted line drawn on the ground. The left figure is pointing down at it while the right figure watches, its arms crossed.
Left figure: Let’s pretend that everything on this side of the imaginary line is mine.
Right figure: ...ok but my house is over there.
Left figure: ... for 3 shiny rocks you can come visit.]
Does that mean canada isn’t real? No. (I mean, obviously canada ISN’T real, but we all agree to pretend it is.) The thing that makes it real is that we are in agreement, and all follow the social rules of pretend to make it seem like the Canadian border, the idea of Canadian citizenship, etc... is an objective fact. (It’s not. These are in fact, negotiable limits and parameters. We have laws in place to define it in legal terms, but those laws can be changed, or may change in the minds of communities. That’s why it’s a construct.)
By that same token, I hold the view that gender, as we largely perceive it in modern society, is a construct. Why? Because it is not inherent; we, as a society, negotiate its meaning.
2) What is gender?
People will probably fight me on this and that’s fine, but here’s my (simplified) understanding of gender (from someone who personally has none)
Gender is a social category negotiated by cultures based on your assigned or desired role in your community that influences, among many other things, your physical appearance, your role in family units, your expected position in jobs, etc.
How I think it happened:
[Description: Two figures are standing on either side of the panel, both holding children-looking figures. The one on the left is wearing purple. The one on the right is wearing green.
Green figure: Hey, I’ve got an idea. What if we separate the babies into two groups based on physical traits they have no control over?
Purple figure: Wh-- okay...?
Green figure: And then limit the jobs they can do and the community ritual involvement available to them based on that!
Purple figure: ... I feel like this is going to backfire on us someday.
Green figure: Nah, it’ll be fine.
The past panel is a dramatic closeup on the purple figure’s face - which is featureless - betraying a deeply doubtful emotion. It says nothing.]
Important points to remember: what gender looks like, what the limits are, what the expectations are... are not inherent to any human biology. We make up gender roles. This is evident in the fact that across the world, gender roles differ by culture. The positions people of a certain gender are allowed to take up are different. What is perceived to be ‘girly’ or ‘boyish’ is different across cultures.
Simply speaking - currently the (western) model we have, dumbed down, is:
You are assigned male at birth because of physical characteristics
You are raised being told to ‘toughen up’ and ‘boys don’t cry’ and encouraged not to show emotions
You are taught to wear male-coded clothes and discouraged from female-coded fashion choices
You are given more opportunities to participate in sports, encouraged to engage in physical activity, etc
You are not expected to need time off for child-rearing
Here’s where gender as it works in society breaks down into being not a real thing but instead something we thought up:
Nothing about having a penis necessitates wearing pants. Nothing about having XY chromosomes means you need to keep your hair short. Nothing about your genome makes the experience of nail-polish different for any human being.
All of these are arbitrary traits we decided were allowed or not allowed to a specific group of people based on entirely unrelated physiology.
Even if we delve deeper, there is MORE variation among individuals of the same ‘sex’ than there are, on average, of members of the ‘opposite sex’ when compared to each other.
Many people use the excuse ‘women are physically not as strong as men’ to say that this has an evolutionary aspect driving these cultural, historical, socially-constructed gender requirements.
But if there was a physical reasoning behind the culturally-set gender-limited job expectations, then we actually WOULDN’T need a traditional binary gender system to sort ourselves into categories. It would simply be decided as a meritocracy - stronger individuals, regardless of gender, would be given physically-demanding jobs. (Also we know that many jobs thought to be ‘traditionally male’ are just the result of sexist bullshit, so this reasoning doesn’t fly any further than I can throw it which is, coincidentally, not very far. Politics is one such area. Doctors are another. We can go on but I think you get my drift.)
My own example of this is an anecdote when my grandparents came to visit my partner and I in Japan. While we were driving down to Tokyo, my grandmother - who has a PhD in entomology - began to say that driving is a masculine activity and women shouldn’t be driving as it was ‘un-woman-like’. My partner almost immediately fired back that in Japan, studying insects or having any interest in them whatsoever was considered a heavily masculine-coded activity. In Russia, there is no such assignment, and my grandmother was left silently blinking in confusion, unable to come up with any excuse except ‘well, all cultures are different, I suppose...’
Do either of these things inherently have a gendered aspect? Of course not! But we assign gendered ideals to them anyway.
3) If gender is made up and constructed by society, then does that mean trans people aren’t real?
No.
Even if you agree that gender is a social construct, trans people are still real. TERFs don’t get a pass. Why?
Because gender - as a social construct - still affects our everyday lives, dictates our social position in our community. Transitioning is still a thing that has to happen. The fact that you are NOT easily able to decide your own gender and are ostracized for wanting to transition, abused for dressing the way you want to be perceived, and bullied for wanting people to refer to you with different pronouns - all those are the effects of a social construct that has very REAL impact on our lives.
This is also why I dislike defining trans-ness by dysphoria. Because transgender people are not only their suffering - the suffering is coming from the outside!! Many trans people remember not being concerned about their gender identity in their childhood, because they did not yet perceive the world as being hostile to their desire to fulfil a specific role in society. The issues and self-hatred and dysphoria begins when they express wanting to be themselves - a life which they are forbidden from pursuing based on physical characteristics they were born with.
Does this mean we should try to remove gender from society? If we constructed it, we can deconstruct it, right?
Realistically, I highly doubt this is possible. Gender is so ingrained in our daily lives that it would be difficult. Nor, I would say, would it be necessary to achieve world peace.
Having social groups - having gender - isn’t inherently a bad thing. The bad thing is when we limit those social groups to specific basic human rights, like voting, or when we forbid them from transitioning from one to another based on things that are out of their control.
Also, I’m not saying genitals and secondary sexual characteristics aren’t real. Please don’t bother sending me that angry message, I’ll ignore it, I promise.
But the concept of gender IS something we thought up and maintain and negotiate with each other to this very day. It’s not granted to us by a higher power, nor is it a constant, unchanging thing. It’s a part of the human experience and like everything, it has the potential to evolve - as a concept in our communal memory, as well as on an individual level, for people who feel they want to be perceived differently.
Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk!
