Chapter 5
Introduction: Whitney Goodwinson was planning on inheriting one of her deceased grandmother's properties, but not a little house off the coast of North Carolina. As she struggles to meet new people, fix up her new property, deal with troublemaker JJ Maybank, and perfect her grandmother's infamous lemonade she might just find that the Outer Banks has more to offer than it seems.
Series Masterlist
Turns out JJ had been working at the “Lemon House” since he was 12 years old. The local kids had apparently been calling it that since before the dawn of time. The house belonged to Grandmother and her family, it was the only property that had ever been completely hers. During the summertime to make extra money, they would sell fresh-squeezed lemonade. I hadn't noticed it before but in the trees to the right of the house was a small greenhouse with a lemon tree grove inside. After Grandmother married Grandfather she would only come for the month of July and her lemonade stand would be packed. JJ said that it was the best months when “Vicky” would come stay at the house and make fresh lemonade for all of the kids. Apparently, the house was “neutral territory” from the two sides of the island, Figure Eight and the Cut. Figure Eight was home to the Kooks, the rich side of Outer Banks. Apparently, Kooks are stuck up, rich, ruthless brats who never had to work a day in their lives.
“You’d fit right in with them, sunshine,” JJ laughed reaching for another beer out of the ice chest. We were sitting on the dock in front of the Lemon House. After our little confrontation, JJ made another joke about my ass, and then I decided he was alright. Grandmother trusted him, so I trust him. Grandmother had a way of figuring people out. Some called her two-faced but she was just trying to survive. So I decided to give JJ and myself a break by day drinking. I honestly hated controlling people, who didn’t deserve it of course and just wanted to test JJ and see how he would react.
“Please you don’t even know me,” I stated, sipping some of my beer which had gotten a little warm. I still couldn't believe the heat of this place, it was excruciating.
“We could fix that you know, get to know each other a little better. I could even think of a few boning exercises we could, uh, participate in,” said JJ with another smirk. He’d been making these kinds of jokes all day and it was getting old. The first few times I felt something in the pit of my stomach, but then realized this is just probably how JJ acted all the time.
“Ha, ha no thank you. Please continue your East Egg, West Egg story.”
“I still don’t get your references, but whatever. So the Kooks think that they own the whole island just because they can use their daddies money to buy anything they want.”
“Ew.”
“Ew?”
“Yeah ew that’s gross, why would their parents let them do that? They won't learn anything about the real world and hard work if they piggyback on their parents' wealth.”
“What and you’re not like that, miss ‘this is my house, my rules,’” said JJ mimicking my voice to sound like a prepubescent boy.
“Oh shut up, I was just seeing if you would pass the test.”
“Oh what test, you just wanted an excuse to get close to me.”
“Shut up and finish your story!” I said impatiently.
“Nuh not until you explain your ‘hard work makes you a better person’ bullshit.”
“Hey hard work does make you a better person, look my family is very well off, obviously, who just gives away houses, but when I turned 18 I was on my own, cut off from my parents and grandparents money. My grandfather grew up in a small mountain town in California with a population of maybe 500 people. During the wintertime, these rich families would come and stay at these fancy resorts where he was a waiter. He worked at that place for eight years. He worked his ass off through college and medical school where he showed he had talent, not because of his parents’ bank account or by how many boats he owned, but by pure talent and it paid off. He had it all: a beautiful wife, three children, and a whole lot of money. Then when my aunt turned 18, she was cut off and had to start over just like he did, but my grandfather taught her and the rest of his children about hard work and dedication. My father taught me the same morals, so growing up while my boarding school friends got to go to parties all the time and go to Vegas for three day weekends I was working as our librarian's assistant.
“Wait, you went to boarding school?”
“Really that’s what you got from my story, really?”
“Yeah pretty much also you were a librarian?”
“I was an assistant librarian, anyways you still need to finish your story! You already told me about the Soches I need to know who the Greasers are.”
“Are you even speaking English? Anyways the other side of the island, The Cut, is home of the Pogues, the greatest people in the world,” he said with a smirk.
“Oh I’m sure.”
“Anyways we’re basically the bottom of the barrel, low life troublemakers according to everyone else. I don’t really mind it. I like the life I live and wouldn't change it for the world. We get to do what we want whenever we want”
“Hm sounds nice, but what are your plans for the future”
“Honestly I thought I would be in jail at this point,” he said completely honestly.
“You’re joking.”
“No, I’m not! I mean two years ago there was this hurricane and some friends and I kinda caught a break and stumbled upon a treasure hunt kinda thing that was supposed to change everything, but it turned out to be a bust,” he said sipping more of his beer. He had a sad look in his eyes so I decided to hold back my Goonies joke and changed the subject.
“So, Pogues basically live like there's no tomorrow?”
“Yeah, basically. After this summer things are gonna change though.”
“Why’s that?”
“Well my friends and I all graduated, some are even going to college, but me and my friend John B are just gonna work for a while.”
“Wait, you graduated high school?” I joked
“Yeah, I’m not as stupid as I look”
“You sure about that?”
“You’ve known me for, what, a day? Even less? You don’t know me,” he had a satisfied look on his face so I decided to keep my observations to myself. There were still some holes to fill, but I had a pretty good idea of who JJ Maybank was. I was guessing a single household and judging by his crude behavior and drinking habit he probably lived with his father. Past tense, of course, the way he talked about his friend John B’s house made it seem like it was his as well. What I really didn’t want to bring up was the obvious abuse from his father. From the way, he joked, didn’t care about his future, and faded scars suggested that he had either gone to war or had an abusive relative. If he was smart he would go into the Army or the Navy to do something with his life, but JJ seemed more free-spirited than that. So for now I guess he’ll mow Grandmother's lawn.
“Ha, you’d be surprised how well I can read people,” just then I got the dreaded text saying that Rafe was picking me up in 20 minutes, “ugh I have to go get ready for dinner before you go can you tell me your work schedule?”
“Oh right yeah,” I wanted to believe that there was disappointment in his eyes, but quickly pushed those thoughts down, “Um I usually mow the lawn once a week, trim the hedges every other week, and weed the garden and pick lemons every other day”
“What have you been doing with the lemons?”
“Oh I just take them to the farmers market and sell them”
“Ah, so you’re stealing from my property now?” I teased.
“Oh no, no it’s not like that I just didn't want them to go to waste I mean I didn't-”
“JJ it’s okay I’m glad you didn’t just throw them away and put them to good use”
“I tried making her lemonade, but it just didn’t seem right,” he said with a sad tone. I really hoped he was being genuine.
“Oh well, maybe we can try it again? I’d like to continue the tradition for now. Anyways keep to your regular work schedule and I’ll make up a new one for you by the end of this week. Would you be willing to help out with maintenance work? I’d pay you extra.”
“Yeah, yeah that sounds great and I think I can do that”
“Okay perfect, when will I see you again?”
“Well I’m free tonight if you want to practice those bonding exercises?” he asked, wiggling his eyebrows and smirking like a fool. A cute fool. Stop it, Whitney!
“I meant your work schedule dumb-ass, when will you be by again to pull the weeds?”
“Oh um what day is it again?”
“It’s Friday.”
“Oh then I’ll be here tomorrow”
“Alright see you then,” I said, extending my hand for him to shake.
“Yeah, um see you then,” JJ awkwardly took my hand like it was a dead fish.
“Is that really how you shake a person’s hand?”
“Sorry, you just caught me off guard, who shakes hands anymore?”
“Professionals do JJ, next time I extend my hand to you better have a proper handshake”
“I’m on it your majesty,” he said as he saluted me.
“Goodbye JJ,” I finally said walking back up the stone path.
“Good luck in Kook Land Whitney,” He yelled to me, smiling like a fool.
It was the first time he had actually said my name and I had to say I liked the way it sounded.
I quickly got ready for what was going to be the most awkward dinner of my life. Since I didn’t have time to shower or anything (gross) I pulled my hair back into a sleek bun and pinned up any loose hairs. For make-up, I put on my normal country club look and slipped on a white babydoll dress. I kept jewelry simple small diamond studs, with a matching bracelet, and a silver chain necklace with a wave pendant. The necklace was a gift from Grandmother, the last thing she gave me in person. She said that it was special to her and that it would bring me good karma. A lot of good it was doing now, I was on a divided island and was about to have dinner with a bunch of robots. Just then I got a text:
Rafe: I’m outside when you’re ready
A true gentleman.
The drive in Rafe’s truck was silent except for the music playing from a local music station. As we drove through Figure Eight I couldn't help but look at all of the beautiful houses. They were huge compared to the small cottage that I was currently living in. They weren't as big as the mansion my parents had just inherited or even my childhood home, but they were beautiful. We drove along a long driveway that came open to the Island Club. When Rafe finally spoke he told me that the club was also a hotel. It looked like it was out of a fairy tale with its peaked roofs and white windows. We pulled into the valet and a man in a white button-down shirt opened the door for me. I was half expecting Rafe to offer me his arm, but he just trudged ahead. We came to a big dining hall where other rich and important families sat. The Camerons were sitting by the front of the dining hall at a rectangle-shaped table next to a ceiling to floor window. It was dusk and the sun was just starting to set outside. It was weird not seeing the sun sink into the ocean, but the sky looked amazing. I was pulled from the stunning view of Rose Carmen's caked face.
“Whitney! You look exquisite in that dress,” said Rose standing up to greet me with a hug. She was sitting to the right of Ward who was at the head of the table Next to Rose was a young teenage girl with glasses and dark hair. To Ward’s left sat a girl who looked about my age. She had long straight hair that I would die for and tan skin. She held an uninterested look on her face that told me this was the last place she wanted to be.
“You are too kind Mrs. Cameron, I simply cannot compare to your family tonight,” was my rebuttal to the compliment. I wasn't lying this time, the Camerons were a good looking family. I noticed the sour look on one of Rose’s daughters, wait, step-daughter, as she rolled her eyes at me.
“Oh honey please just call me Rose and you are too kind,” she sat back down and gestured to an empty chair on the other side of the table. I nodded to Ward and took a seat next to the older looking sister and Rafe sat at the other head of the table.
“Whitney I’d like to introduce you to the rest of our family, this is Wheezie,” she said gesturing to the glasses-wearing girl to her right.
“It’s nice to meet you Wheezie,” I said, trying to keep the shock/amusement out of my voice.
“And this is Sarah,” continued Rose now looking at the girl that was seated to my right, unaware of my struggle to stay professional, “I believe you two are the same age.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Sarah,” I said, turning to look at the girl trying to be nice. I really did want to try and make friends, even if I was only gonna be here for the summer.
“Likewise,” replied Sarah. Yup, she definitely wanted to be somewhere else.
“So Whitney, how are takin’ to the OBX?” Ward asked me. Ah so, the interrogation began.
“It’s been nice. It’s a lot more humid than California, but I think I’ll get used to it”
“About California, has your family lived there very long?” interrupted Rose, causing a look from Ward.
“Yes, my father’s company headquarters is in San Diego so I’ve lived there all my life.”
“San Diego?” Sarah surprisingly interrupted, “that’s where SeaWorld is right?”
“Oh that must be so fun to go too, seeing all of those fish and dolphins,” Rose added innocently. Sarah gave her a look of disappointment and was waiting for my answer with anticipation as if this question would shift the way the rest of the night went. I’d have to be careful with my words.
“Um yes, it is, however my family and I are not supportive of the company. The captivating of Killer Whales is a huge controversy where I’m from. I don’t believe that those creatures should be held in captivity.” There was a pause of silence.
“That’s really interesting Whitney,” said Rose, not sounding interested at all.
“Thank you, Rose,” I continued pretending I ignored her dull sounding voice, “the abuse of sea life for public enjoyment is not discussed enough in our society. My father's company has donated annually to charities in support of taking care of these issues.”
“Ah yes interesting indeed,” said Ward taking a long drink of his scotch. I knew it was time to change the subject.
“So Mr. Cameron do you like fishing?”
The rest of the night went like this, chatting back and forth about the weather, food, and other things to do in the Outer Banks. The food was amazing: a three-course meal of an appetizer, entree, and dessert. The conversation at the table was basically just Rose, Ward, and me. Rafe would make a few comments when we would talk about fishing and Sarah would bring up the best beaches to go to for tanning.
“Do you by any chance know of any good beaches for surfing?” I asked. I had been dying to get back in the water and the internet only suggested the most popular beaches. I figured a local would know of the best spots.
“Oh um I’m not really an expert on those beaches, but I have some friends who would know some good places!” said Sarah, at the mention of Sarah’s friends the rest of the table fell silent, “here give me your number and I’ll text you when the next time they go out!” She handed me her phone and I put my number in.
“Thank you so much! My board should be coming on Monday, so anytime after that, I’ll be free,” I said, handing her phone back to her.
“Cool, how long have you been surfing?”
“All my life basically, my mother grew up surfing and taught me at a young age and I’ve been surfing ever since”
“Awesome!”
“Anyways girls we should get going, Whitney, it was so nice to catch up with you,” said Rose coming around the table to give me another hug.
“Oh the pleasure was all mine,” I said standing up, “it was so nice to get acquainted with you all.”
“Oh, Whitney you must come by our house for brunch some time!”
“Yeah we'll see,” I said trying to lean towards the door not planning on taking her up on the offer.
“Alright Rafe take Whitney home and we’ll see you-“
“Actually,” interrupted Sarah, “I was thinking I could take Whitney home? She’s been hanging out with Rafe all afternoon and she needs some girl time.”
She said it as if her parents had already agreed to let her take me home. Before they could say another word Sarah took my hand and pulled me out of the Country Club.
“Goodbye!” I cried out as Sarah almost pulled my arm out of my socket and out of the restaurant.
a/n: A little longer chapter and I wont be posting again today :( . Also who didn’t think Wheezies name was kinda ridiculous like I hope I’m not the only one. I’m going to start uploading longer chapters from now on because I just can’t wait for you guys to read more! Thanks again for reading it really means a lot and I’d love your feedback!

New top story from Time: High School Seniors Are ‘Making Lemonade out of Lemons’ With Graduations Online, at Drive-Ins and on Racetracks
Briauna Leonard graduated from high school at home wearing pajamas and sitting at her kitchen table beside her cat, Mr. Pickles, watching the salutatory address that she recorded a week earlier in an almost empty auditorium.
“It was a little heartbreaking, honestly, to work your way up for 12 years, and you look forward to all these things — senior prom and graduation, senior week, and the senior trip,” says Leonard, a new graduate of Groves High School in Savannah, Georgia. “I just kind of had to look at it like, at least I was getting a graduation, and I made it to the end.”
During the virtual ceremony on May 13, which was live streamed on YouTube and broadcast on TV, Principal Timothy Cox congratulated graduates on reaching that milestone in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted their final weeks of high school.
“You went from working in a classroom to working 100 percent online,” he said. “You went from dreams of having a standard graduation to a virtual one. You went from working part-time, probably just to pay your bills, to some of you working full-time to help support your families. And you did all this while taking classes.”
“The world changed,” Cox said. “And you changed with it.”
The COVID-19 pandemic has shuttered thousands of schools across the country and canceled large group gatherings, including graduations. It has thrust new responsibilities onto teens during a pivotal time in their lives and made their futures more uncertain. Now, instead of packing auditoriums, gymnasiums and football fields with graduates and their families, schools have shifted to virtual ceremonies or socially distant celebrations at drive-in movie theaters, school parking lots or the Daytona International Speedway. Some schools have delayed graduations or scheduled individual ceremonies at which a graduate can walk across a stage and receive their diploma, with just immediate family in attendance.
Ella Potee, a senior at Pioneer Valley Regional School in Northfield, Mass., will graduate at the drive-in movie theater where she once watched Toy Story, Jurassic Park and last year’s live-action Lion King. In a few weeks, she will deliver a valedictorian speech to her 40 classmates as they sit in their cars, listening to her over the radio, watching her up on a screen made for movies.
“I grew up going to movies there with my family. I had dates there with boyfriends,” says Potee, 18. “It’s just this place in your town where everyone convenes in the summer. And to have it be the place where we’re all ending our senior year is going to be really exciting.”
At the graduation on June 4, “Pomp and Circumstance” will play as seniors drive to assigned parking spots at the Northfield Drive-In. Speakers will approach a podium one at a time. When graduates’ names are called, they’ll get out of their cars and walk up to retrieve their diploma off a table, without shaking anyone’s hand. When the ceremony ends, there will be a fireworks show, and graduates can stick around to watch a movie of their choice.
Keep up to date with our daily coronavirus newsletter by clicking here.
“This is making lemonade out of lemons. It’s dancing in the rain. It’s celebrating our successes, even with what the world is facing now,” Principal Kevin Burke says, adding that the ceremony is critical to recognizing the struggles many students have gone through to earn their diplomas. “I think a celebration is really important.”
School officials across the country agree, and many are going to great and creative lengths to make graduation day memorable. The Northfield Drive-In alone has received inquiries about playing host to a dozen other graduation events, for everyone from 6th-graders to medical school students. But for thousands of young adults about to leave high school, who’ve missed proms, senior trips and the chance to say goodbye in-person to their classmates, this once-in-a-lifetime moment is bittersweet, another reminder that the world they grew up in no longer exists.
Kasandra Acosta, a senior at Victor Valley High School in Victorville, Calif., tried on her cap and gown last week, texted a selfie to her mom, and cried. “It was really heartbreaking, realizing that I might not actually get to wear it for a graduation,” says Acosta, the first in her family to graduate high school. Her school is planning a drive-thru graduation event on May 26. Seniors will pick up their diplomas and walk across a stage while wearing a cap and gown and a mask with a school logo on it. Families will be required to stay in their cars.
Courtesy of Katharine Bontuyan Kasandra Acosta will pick up her diploma via a drive-thru at her high school in Victorville, California.
The approach to graduation this year varies significantly by state and by school district, a reminder of the disparate approach to the virus itself, as some states move to reopen businesses while others remain in lockdown. The various graduation plans also reflect the economic disparities among school districts; several require students or their families to have vehicles.
At White County High School in Cleveland, Georgia, officials are creating their own drive-in, renting a four-story tall screen for a graduation of about 250 seniors in the school parking lot on May 22. The school plans to follow the traditional graduation format as best it can. The school principal and superintendent will walk from car to car, handing diplomas to seniors as a camera follows them so the crowd can watch.
“The biggest goal we have is that this graduation will be so fantastic, that we want our juniors to be jealous,” says White County Assistant Principal Adam Wiley, who has a background in theater and has been planning the graduation like he would choreograph a show. “We need to honor their work and celebrate them in a fashion that is befitting of what they’re dealing with.”
In Florida, about 1,050 high school seniors from the Flagler County School District will graduate at the Daytona International Speedway on May 31, seated in their cars with their families. After speeches from a couple of students and school officials, graduates will be told to start their engines and drive to the finish line, where a principal wearing a mask and gloves will hand them their diplomas before letting each grad take a victory lap around the race track.
“This will be one for the books,” says Flagler Schools Superintendent James Tager. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime deal.”
Isabella Scarcella, the student body president of Flagler Palm Coast High School, will be one of the graduates. And after a “weird and unsettling” end to her senior year, the 17-year-old is looking forward to the event, even if it’s not the graduation ceremony she had been expecting. “I know it’s going to be very different doing it on the speedway,” she says. “But at least we’re still literally and metaphorically crossing a finish line.”
Courtesy of Isabella ScarcellaIsabella Scarcella will graduate from high school in a ceremony at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida on May 31, 2020.
Texas has approved outdoor in-person graduation ceremonies in June as long as attendees stay at least six feet apart and are questioned about possible COVID-19 symptoms beforehand, but the Houston Independent School District is taking a more conservative approach. Its 11,000 high school seniors will graduate virtually, interim district superintendent Grenita Lathan announced, calling it “one of the most difficult decisions I have ever confronted as the district leader.”
Seniors in the Los Angeles Unified School District also are restricted to online graduations after public health officials said options that included renting out Dodger Stadium or the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum were not safe. New York City is planning a citywide virtual graduation ceremony for high school seniors. “You may not have the traditional ceremony that you were looking forward to,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference. “We’re going to give you something you will remember for the rest of your life.”
Acosta in Victorville knows her graduation will be nothing like what she’d imagined: family members and friends packing the stands on the school football field and descending to hug the seniors and take photos. In an email announcing the new plan for graduation, her principal reminded seniors: “At no time during the event will you be shaking hands with or hugging anyone.”
The anticlimactic ending has been tough. “It means a lot to me because most of my family came from Mexico, and they didn’t get the opportunity to finish school,” Acosta says. “My Mom has always told me, ‘I want you to do things that I never got to do,’ and this was such a big part of it.”
In Savannah, Leonard, mentioned the pandemic’s effect on her class during her speech. “It means missing the cheers of my friends and family as my name is called to receive my diploma. It means missing out on the opportunity to say last goodbyes to my closest friends as we will soon be miles apart,” she said, before congratulating her classmates for thriving despite the challenges.
“Let’s give it up to the class of 2020,” she said. “May we never have to worry about toilet paper again.”
Courtesy of Viren MirchandaniViren Mirchandani tuned in to his virtual high school graduation ceremony at home in Savannah, Georgia, on May 13, 2020.
Viren Mirchandani, valedictorian at Jenkins High School in Savannah, regretted that he wouldn’t get to walk into graduation side-by-side with his friends or see their faces while delivering his speech. “That would’ve been an amazing moment for me, something to look back on when I’m older,” he said. “I don’t really get to cherish the memory with all those people.”
Instead, like Leonard, he tuned in to his virtual graduation from home on Wednesday morning with his parents, grandparents and younger sister.
They listened to remarks from school officials and to Mirchandani’s own pre-recorded valedictorian speech, and heard each graduate’s name as their photo appeared on screen. Then, Jenkins High School Principal Heather Handy asked every graduate, “wherever you are,” to stand, “hopefully wearing that bright red cap and gown.”
“I ask that you stand tall and you be proud, for you will forever be remembered as the graduating class who made milestones and history, as the world addressed a global pandemic,” she said.
In kitchens and living rooms around Savannah, 241 high school seniors moved the tassel on their cap from right to left and graduated.

(SS)
NEW ORLEANS VICTIM IDENTIFIED; SECOND MAN INJURED – Lorenzo Joseph, of 3rd Avenue, Chapman Lane, St Michael and No.35 Goodland Park, Christ Church is this island’s 12th murder victim for the year. The 31-year-old was shot and killed around 5:20p.m. on Saturday, February 16 following a shooting incident between 5th and 6th Avenue, New Orleans, St Michael. Joseph was reportedly liming among a group of men in the area when a lone gunman approached and opened fire, striking him about body. Another man was also injured. He transported by private vehicle to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) where he succumbed to his injuries. The deceased was a former Empire Club footballer who also represented the City of Bridgetown in the David Thompson Memorial Football Classic. The second man, 25-year-old Rio Walkes, of Sobers Lane, St Michael was taken to the QEH by private transport. However, police say his condition is unknown at this time. A man is currently assisting lawmen with their investigations into this incident. (BT)
POLICE RELEASE NAME OF ST GEORGE VICTIM – Police have released the name of the man whose lifeless body was found “lying on the road in a pool of blood” following reports of a shooting at Rock Hall, St George near Taitt Hill this morning. He is 22-year-old Graham Norville, of No.14 Lemgreene Development, Lemon Arbour, St John. Investigations are continuing into this island’s 11th murder which occurred today, February 16 around 11:52 a.m. Police are asking anyone with information that can assist with their investigations to call emergency number 211, Crime Stoppers at 1 800 TIPS(8477) or any police station. (BT)
LOCAL CAST MOURNS FOR MURDERED ACTOR – The quiet of the Rock Hall, St George community was shattered just before noon today when gunshots rang out. When the dust had settled, 22-year-old Graham Norville lay in the road dead. The father of two, of No.14 Lemgreene, Lemon Arbour, St John is the island’s 11th murder victim for 2019. His lifeless body was found “lying on the road in a pool of blood” following a shooting at Rock Hall, near Taitt Hill around 11:52 a.m. Saturday, February 16. Norville is known for his role as Short Boss on the Barbadian web video series Badness. Dwayne Harris, director and lead actor in the popular series told Barbados TODAY that the cast was devastated by the news of Norville’s murder. He said the deceased who was seeking to further his career in the local film industry had “great potential”. “He was a very great individual. He had some things about to happen for him in the film industry. It is just sad that he had to pass so early,” Harris said, while adding that he hoped the content of the web series would not be aligned with the circumstances surrounding Norville’s death. Prominent youth activist and facilitator of the Nature Fun Ranch, Corey Lane, who has also acted in the web series, shared that Norville was also a songwriter, singer and an artiste. The activist issued a call for early intervention of the nation’s youth so they would not fall victim to crime and violence. “If we could only facilitate our young men . . . within the society . . . we could really put a dent in the fatalities, the murders and even everyday crime and violence in the society,” said Lane. He went on to suggest that the public use Norville’s death as a motivation to rescue the island’s youth so the cycle of violence would not repeat itself. “The saddest comment that I have heard thus far is that these guys live by the gun and therefore they will die by the gun and while it maybe a fact, I think there is much more we can do as a society to be proactive as opposed to reactive. One of the other things that is very important is prevention and reaching our teenagers, of young teenage age, to prevent them from having to walk down this road because it is much easier as the saying goes to bend a boy than break a man. “His death does not have to be in vain. His death can be a rallying call for all of us to double down and save our youth and save our society,” he said. (BT)
COW ITCH CLEARED FROM NEAR BLACKMAN AND GOLLOP – The clean-up of cow itch infested lands to the east of the Blackman and Gollop Primary School got underway this morning. 24 HOUR POLYCLINIC SERVICE COMING JUNE 1 – The 24-hour health care service, to be introduced at two of the island’s polyclinics, will be officially launched on June 1. From that date, patients will be able to access medical care on a continuous basis, Monday through Sunday, at the Winston Scott Polyclinic, Jemmotts Lane, St Michael, and the David Thompson Health and Social Services Complex, Glebe Land, St John. According to the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the initiative is aimed at cutting down on the time patients currently wait to be seen at the Accident and Emergency Department of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital by offering them round-the-clock service at alternative venues. Services offered will include urgent care, which refers to illnesses and injuries which require immediate care but are not life-threatening, as well as routine care, which may include follow-up care for chronic conditions and health checks. In a statement, the Ministry revealed that it would be meeting with the major trade unions and workers’ representatives in early March to provide an update on the initiative. The meeting will report on the actions taken to address security concerns and human resource issues raised at earlier stakeholder meetings. The organizations involved are the National Union of Public Workers, the Barbados Workers’ Union, the Unity Workers Union, the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners and the Barbados Nurses’ Association. With the introduction of the 24-hour polyclinic service, the public will be encouraged to visit the Accident and Emergency Department of the QEH primarily for emergency care, which is defined as life-threatening conditions or conditions which need an emergency response. For all other medical issues, they are encouraged to utilize the polyclinic services which will be fully staffed and equipped to meet their needs. (BGIS)
LAUNCH OF VISION 2020: WE GATHERIN’ NEXT FRIDAY – Hundreds of Barbadians are expected to converge in Bridgetown next Friday, February 22, for the launch of Vision 2020: We Gatherin’. It will be held in Parliament’s Courtyard and two screens will be set up so members of the public may view the ceremony on Broad Street or by the Palmetto Square Market. Vision 2020: We Gatherin’ is a 12-month global celebration of Barbadian excellence and a recommitment to this country’s successful future and core values that have defined us as a people. 2020 has been designated as the year for Barbadians and those who love this country to come home, reconnect with family and friends, and invest in the rebuilding and development of Barbados. Purposeful Pursuit of Barbadian Excellence is the theme of the year-long celebrations, which is an initiative of Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley. It is designed to reinforce Government’s mantra of building the best Barbados together. Vision 2020: We Gatherin’ will comprise structured events at the national level, which will be coordinated by Government with input from its social partners. However, community groups, churches, educational institutions, entrepreneurs, and regional and international persons with Barbadian connections, among others, will be encouraged to produce other events. The initiative will begin in the north of the island in January 2020, and move southward every month, allowing each designated parish to showcase its icons, social life and the food for which it is renowned. The parish celebrations will culminate in St Michael in November, and Vision 2020: We Gatherin’ will climax in December with a Christmas extravaganza for all Barbadians – at home and abroad. (BGIS)
DIGICEL PLEASED WITH PERFORMANCE - After more than a decade of operating in Barbados and despite continued economic challenges, telecommunications company Digicel (Barbados) Limited, says it is pleased with its performance so far. Acting Chief Executive Officer Katherine Payne said the company’s 15 years of operations here have been fruitful for customers, the country and the company, adding that Digicel would continue to expand its offerings and grow its operations in order to capture a bigger piece of the pie. Opting not to give details Payne said: “LTE was one of our largest investments of late and our technical team and business strategy team are always looking at what is the next best thing in terms of not just the company but the country. While I have nothing to announce right now you can look out for things in the future.” She was speaking to members of the media on Friday night at the Barbados Hilton Resort where the company awarded about a dozen winners with cash prizes, cellular phones, free months of service, plane tickets and a home entertainment system for taking part in its Christmas 2018 promotion. She said the response for the competition was a positive one and that there was “nothing that we regretted with our Christmas promotion. It was very, very well received.” Barbados Community College employee Vercia Webb walked away with the grand prize of a brand-new Suzuki Swift. Other top prize winners were Debbie Brathwaite, a Liberty Store employee, who walked away with $20,000, and Barbados TODAY employee Maria Bascombe, who received two LIAT plane tickets. Digicel customers had the opportunity to win once they top up, purchase a handset or SIM card, pay a bill on time or sign up for a new service. Speaking on the progress of the company over the past 15 years, Payne said Digicel had played an important role in the development of the information and communication technology (ICT) sector here by breaking the monopoly. “What this basically means is that as a country the average citizen can afford to have access to varying levels of communication, so it is not just about mobile anymore. Digicel is a full-service provider, we service not just mobile customers but home and entertainment. We provide now fixed line and TV services to our customers, and then full ICT solutions for our business segment. So it really has provided an opportunity where the country as a whole can expand when it comes to telecommunications,” Payne explained. She said while the company did not yet have 100 per cent coverage of the island, she was satisfied that “the coverage is good” and was continuously improving. “We have increase bandwidth from a home and entertainment perspective. For our corporate customers as well, we have one of the largest customer bases in the country. In fact, for most of the Digicel offices across the region we have been expending not just from a corporate space but into government as well. We have signed deals over the last eight to nine months in Dominica and other Caribbean islands,” she revealed. “So Digicel is not just about providing mobile but about growing the telecommunications infrastructure of the country,” Payne added. During the brief award ceremony on Friday night, Director of Consumer Sales Dionne Emtage delivered remarks on behalf of the company’s board director Ralph Bizzy Williams. In that speech, Emtage said Digicel had played an exceptional role in Barbados and the region in providing “well-paid jobs for hundreds of people”. “The impact on the economy of the island has been tremendous all because Digicel aimed to break the monopoly of a single operator to bring the price of communication down drastically,” she said. Emtage also pointed out that Williams Industries benefited from the company as a result of partnerships. (BT)
HARRIS PAINTS PARTNERS WITH UNFPA IN PROACTIVE HURRICANE RESPONSE - By partnering with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Harris Paints is joining a proactive effort to help women and young girls in the region – should a natural disaster strike. The Caribbean paint company has provided space in its main Barbados warehouse for the UNFPA to store 1264 “dignity kits.” This storage allows the UNFPA to respond rapidly to the needs of affected populations in case of an emergency. In 2017 Harris Paints worked to ship water and supplies, provided by the company, staff and the wider public, for the hurricane ravaged islands of Barbuda and Dominica. This included the distribution of several dignity kits provided by the UNFPA. This current collaboration allows the UNFPA to be even better positioned in advance of a potential disaster. Randy Warner, Programme Clerk with the UNFPA, explained, “that during natural disasters many women and adolescent girls become more vulnerable to sexual exploitation and lack basic human necessities and protection. Left unattended, it is a situation that becomes progressively more acute. Dignity kits help women and girls maintain their dignity during humanitarian crises. Preserving dignity is essential to maintaining self-esteem and confidence, which is important to cope in stressful and potentially overwhelming humanitarian situations. Supporting women’s self-esteem and confidence also assists them in providing care and protection to their children.” These kits help mitigate some of these issues and contain toiletries like soap and toothpaste, sanitary supplies and clean undergarments to provide basic hygiene. In other humanitarian efforts UNFPA also works with ministries of health in the region to provide reproductive health kits during emergencies that include items to support clean delivery, rape treatment, the treatment of sexually transmitted infections and other essential drugs, basic equipment and supplies. “This storage space from Harris Paints allowed us to create and store more dignity kits to facilitate better pre-positioning of emergency supplies should any Caribbean nation face a natural disaster,” said Warner. Some of the kits will be stored locally but the majority will be sent to the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) in Antigua and Barbuda where they can be distributed throughout the region. Tracy Johnson, Product and Trade Marketing Manager, welcomed the effort. “It’s great to partner with an organization like UNFPA who work to support women and adolescent girls when they are at their most vulnerable. We were happy to be able to provide a staging post in their efforts and to assist, should the need arise, in making sure these supplies are available and can get to those that need them as quickly as possible.” (BT)
WEST INDIES BRACING FOR STRONG CHALLENGE - With the odds yet again firmly stacked against West Indies in the upcoming One-Day International series, marquee batsman Shai Hope says the Caribbean are bracing for a strong challenge from England but also plan to counter with firepower of their own. West Indies are ranked ninth in the ICC one-day rankings and face a number one-ranked England side, already pencilled in as firm favourites to win the World Cup at home later this year. However, Hope said while the Wes Indies were cognisant of the challenge, they were not intimidated and would be looking to spring a surprise, similar to what occurred in the preceding three-Test series. “We’re an international team, we’ve come here to play cricket and we just view it as a challenge. We know they’re going to come at us hard and we’ve got to do the same – fight fire with fire,” Hope said here Saturday. “It’s a lot to look forward to, very exciting times especially leading up to the World Cup so I’m sure the guys are ready and raring to go. We’re just coming off a Test series win so it’s important for us to continue in that vein and try to get the series win as well.” He added: “We can use this as a good gauge for us going into the World Cup. We’re still looking at some plans [in terms of] what is the best fit and [team] combination but it’s a good challenge for us and we’ve got some work to do.” The two teams clash in the opening ODI at Kensington Oval here, with the hosts seeking their first series win over their opponents in 12 years. They will be motivated by their performance in the Test series, however, where they tore up the form books to crush the English in the opening two Tests, and regain the Wisden Trophy or the first time in a decade. (BT)
BAJAN SKIS INTO 2ND PLACE – Barbadian free skier Victor White placed second today in the Europa Cup in Poland. His win saw him receive an outpouring of congratulatory messages, including one from Minister of Sports, John King. (SS)
TAMIS WILL BE OFFLINE FOR MAINTENANCE ON SUNDAY –The public is asked to note that the Tax Administration Management Information System (TAMIS) will be offline on Sunday February 17, 2019 from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. for scheduled maintenance. As a result, TAMIS registration as well as corporate and business tax filing will be unavailable during that time. We regret any inconvenience and look forward to your understanding. (BT)
GIVE IT A HIGHER PLACE – While praising music teachers for the tremendous job they have been doing in schools with limited resources available to them, Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw is saying it is time music be placed as a priority on the curriculum. Bradshaw said it is impossible to change attitudes towards music, or to build a vibrant local music industry, if education is not included in the process. Speaking at the media launch of The School’s Music Festival, at the Ministry’s Elsie Payne Complex, Constitution Road Office this morning, Bradshaw said it is time a conversation is started about how important the arts are within education. She said some Barbadians have been fortunate to attain success in the entertainment industry, however, at the same time, she firmly believes that there was significant room and need for more persons to make a living out of entertainment. “I don’t want to underscore the role education plays in so many different facets of everyday life. But particularly relation to the creative arts, we have to start with the foundation. “And the foundation is when students go into primary school, and they play a recorder, we have to make sure that the teachers are skilled, that they are trained, that they understand the basics and the fundamentals of music. It is there that it starts in terms of being able to create a vibrant music industry,” Bradshaw said. The Minister said she agreed that students who are upcoming musicians must be prepared for competition, but should also be taught a certain level of confidence that would enable them to hone their craft. “It doesn’t make them feel as though one person is better than the other. But rather that they develop a certain camaraderie to be able to come back on another occasion. That is the spirit with which I believe education has to move forward in relation to the arts. We have to be able to overcome some of the challenges in terms of resources,” she said. The Schools’ Music Festival was established to provide participants at both the primary and secondary level, with the opportunity to develop their musical performance environment. While the festival climaxes with two distinct primary and secondary showcase events, the aim is to provide structures for the ongoing development of outstanding and promising participants, while also exposing them to the business elements of the music industry. This year, the two audition rounds scheduled to be held on February 21 and 22, at the Prince Cave Hall, District ‘A’ Police Station, would be closed. The Grand showcase events would be held on Saturday, March 23 for the primary schools, and Sunday, March 24 for the secondary students, at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium. Deputy Chief Education Officer (Planning) Dr Roderick Rudder said one of the fundamental changes that underpins this year’s music festival is that there would be no competition, just a showcase. Dr Rudder said the decision to move away from the competitive element was made to ensure that students have the opportunity to demonstrate their true potential without having to face the fear of competing. “Now, one of the fundamental changes that we really want to drive home this year, is the collaborative partnership between the teachers in our schools, the students who would be performing, and the practitioners from the industry who would be assisting with the development of the skills and the talents to be identified by the panel that will be assessing talented students who would be participating in this year’s Schools Music Festival. Additionally, there would also be the provision of a framework for ongoing artiste development in the long term,” he said. (BT)

6 Early Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system. The nervous system is so complex and involved in so much of what we do and how we feel. Disrupted nerve signals show up in many different ways, making multiple sclerosis both unpredictable and tricky to diagnose. Currently, there is no single test or symptom that definitively determines that a person has the disease. Doctors must use a number of tests to rule out other possible conditions that cause similar symptoms and find evidence of damage in two separate areas of the brain, spinal cord, or optic nerve. Additionally, they have to find evidence that the two instances of damage happened at two separate times.
In other words, it is not possible to test for MS at home. And because of the complexity of our nervous system and the countless neural pathways susceptible to damage, multiple sclerosis shows up in many different ways. Below, we describe a small handful of the early signs of MS. This brief list of illustrates the complex affect that the disease can have on a person’s daily life.
6 Early Signs of Multiple Sclerosis
If you suffer from any combination of these symptoms, it’s important to discuss them with a doctor.
1. Visual problems
For many people who suffer from multiple sclerosis, visual impairment is the first sign that something is not right. Inflammation or damage to the optic nerve may result in: blurred vision, uncontrolled eye movement, blindness in one eye, and double vision.
2. Numbness and tingling
Facial numbness and tingling in the arms and legs are both common symptoms of multiple sclerosis. It may be mild enough to tolerate or so severe that it impairs the use of the affected body part and impedes the activities of daily life. Extreme numbness can also increase the risk of burn injuries around fire and hot water, or bite injuries to the cheeks and tongue.
3. Vertigo
Damage to certain parts of the neural pathways can affect visual and spatial coordination, leading to vertigo. Vertigo in turn often results in lightheadedness, nausea and problems with balance.
4. Bladder dysfunction
According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 80% of people with MS have bladder problems due to the faulty transmission of nerve signals. Symptoms include frequent urination and incontinence.
5. Cognitive issues
For some people, cognitive difficulties are one of the first signs of multiple sclerosis. These may include trouble with: concentration, memory, information processing, and visual perception.
6. Fatigue
Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms in multiple sclerosis, and the cause varies from person to person. For some, it is the result of deterioration of nerves in the spinal column. Others may develop fatigue from insufficient sleep due to bladder dysfunction or nighttime muscle spasms. And sometimes, the fatigue is caused by the effort and exertion required to manage the range of MS symptoms.
Rehabilitation Therapies for Patients with Multiple Sclerosis
Unfortunately, there is no cure for MS. There are, however, ways to slow disease progression, manage symptoms, optimize quality of life, and maintain independence. Multiple sclerosis treatment varies from patient to patient.
Any comprehensive MS care plan will include rehabilitation strategies to promote wellness and help patients to live their best possible life. Every patient’s needs are different, but rehabilitative therapies a skilled nursing facility may offer patients with MS include:
Physical therapy – PT exercises for mobility, balance, and strength will promote safety and optimal functioning. Physical therapy treatment for Multiple Sclerosis can also help prevent deconditioning of the muscles and address bladder issues.
Occupational therapy – OTs help patients with MS learn to use assistive devices to maintain independence in the activities of daily living, and to evaluate and treat problems with thinking and memory.
Speech therapy – When damage to the central nervous system affects speech and/or swallowing, speech therapists use voice training, oral exercises, breath control and other techniques to help patients communicate clearly and swallow safely.

By Jeff Clemetson
Dianne Hutchings wants to make sure that La Mesa residents are aware of the El Cajon Animal Shelter where she has worked as an animal care attendant for more than 19 years.
“A lot of people who live in the city of La Mesa who lose their animals, they actually don’t know where to go look for them,” she said. “They don’t know that there is a shelter in El Cajon.”
Not just any shelter, but the one that is contracted by the city of La Mesa to take its strays and relinquished pets.
And thanks to funding from Proposition O, passed way back in 2004, that shelter is soon to be replaced with a larger, more modern facility.

“We expect the contractors and the architect and the city staff to continue working together to finish up the design by late spring [2017],” said Majed Al-Ghafry, El Cajon assistant city manager and project manager for the new animal shelter. “Construction will start in the summer and the completion is anticipated to be in the late summer [of 2018].”
Right now, the project has finished its feasibility studies and the El Cajon City Council has approved the guaranteed maximum price for the facility — slightly more than $9.3 million — and has authorized the city manager’s office to negotiate the contract with CW Driver to build the shelter. Amanda Shultz of Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects designed the building.
Although construction for the new facility now has a timeline, Hutchings and the other staff at the animal shelter have been waiting for a long time and point out that other Prop O projects like the new El Cajon police station and fire house are already built and operating.
“We’ve been waiting a long time,” said Cindy Cullinan, Animal Control officer. “We can’t wait to get to the new place.”
An artist’s rendering of the southwest view of the new El Cajon Animal Shelter (Courtesy of City of El Cajon)
Al-Ghafry said the delays are due to an original project idea that had a more regional facility in mind that would be large enough to serve El Cajon, La Mesa, Santee, Lemon Grove and other East County areas. The new site also allows the existing shelter to remain open while the new one is built, saving money that would have had to go toward renting an interim facility.
“The feasibility studies probably took us a little bit longer, but we wanted to do it right. We figured if we wait a little bit longer and do it right, it is better than just go off an idea or a plan that may or may not be the best for us,” Al-Ghafry said. “We wanted to make sure that 10 years down the road, 15 years down the road, people will look back and say, ‘Yeah, you know they did a really good job here. They waited a little bit longer but they didn’t miss much.’”
The existing animal shelter, located at 1275 N. Marshall Ave. in El Cajon, was built in 1957. The aging, 5,900-square-foot, cinderblock building houses up to 103 animals at a time. The new shelter, which will be located just up the street at 1305 N. Marshall Ave., will be 13,500 total square feet when including the play yards and will house up to 190 animals.
In addition to the play yards, the new facility will include a community room that will be used for education; separate dog and cat areas; rooms for the animals with glass walls so they can be showcased for adoption; a full veterinarian center; combo indoor/outdoor cages for dogs; and a separate evaluation area.
“That gives you the ability to come into the sally ports, look at dogs or cats that have health issues or have behavioral issues and treat them in a separate area than where you have your community cats or dogs that are ready for adoption,” Al-Ghafrey said.
Al-Ghafrey visited similar animal centers such as the Humane Society campuses in San Diego and Escondido, the Palm Springs Animal Shelter as well as the county shelter for “lessons learned” in building those facilities and to see what would be helpful to put into the new El Cajon facility.
One idea that came from those trips was to have two entrances — one for adoption and one for intake.
“The intake folks who are giving up their dog or cat, their state of mind is a little bit different than if you are excited about coming to adopt a pet so we wanted to give a dynamic of privacy and respect people’s state of mind,” he said.
La Mesa has contracted to use the shelter for animal care services since 2001, and that contract will continue with the new facility. The city plays a flat fee for each animal that is kept in the shelter. The cost varies per animal but so far the shelter averages around 300 animals per year from the La Mesa, Al-Ghafrey said.
Of those 300 — and of all the animals brought to the shelter — Hutchings worries that some owners might lose their pet just because they are unaware of where to go to look for a lost pet.
“People could come in here two weeks later and their animal could be gone and they wouldn’t even know it was here,” Hutchings said, adding that people whose lost pets end up in the shelter have only four to five working days to come and claim them — after that they are up for adoption.
Cullinan would also like to get the word out about the shelter to all East County and San Diego residents that the shelter also has animals waiting adoption.
“We have people come in all the time saying ‘I never know you guys were here’ from all different parts of town — San Diego, La Mesa, El Cajon,” she said.
Al-Ghafrey is excited that the new shelter will soon be built for the animals that will be housed there and especially for the staff and volunteers who will work there.
“The staff does a fantastic job,” he said. “This is my personal observation. They are all very passionate. They deserve a state-of-the-art building that is going to allow them to do what they really do fully for animal care services.”
