Devlog 26
Another week of game development down. I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of this thing.
Does anyone know a word for when you are working on your game and the closer you get to a big checkpoint in development the more stuff you discover you have to do? I can't tell if it's scope creep or just forgetting to write down detailed plans.
Anyways, I've been spending a lot of time this week doing all kinds of research. Researching how to market a game, how to make a game that'll sell, how to make a good platformer, stuff like that. It's very interesting! I would also like to recommend this video I found. I think he makes some really good points, and definitely points that I haven't considered: Marketing is NOT Why Most Indie Games Fail (youtube.com)
Other than research, I've been making new stages for the yokai forest and I think it just might be ready for a showcase next week! Here are a couple screen shots of some finished areas.

One fun thing that I've added is currency! I was on the fence about it for a while, but it makes the 'how' of the player getting certain items a lot simpler. The currency is modeled after old Japanese coins.
Besides, who doesn't like collecting sparkly things?

Questions and comments on my game are welcome! <3

Prologue     Chapter 1   Chapter 2  Chapter 3 Chapter 4
The first time Virgil had seen Patton, it had been on the battlefield. The larger man was on his knees, three men wearing the same uniform as Virgil strewn around him, fresh blood gushing from deep gouges on his face. He’d looked up at Virgil like he expected to die, his eyes bright with relief.
The first time Virgil had seen Logan, he’d barely been more than a kid. Even skinnier than he was now, drenched to the bone in his threadbare apprentice robes and shaking with rage. He’d thrust a handful of coins across the table at Virgil and Patton, newly minted heroes for hire, and demanded they kill his master.
The first time Virgil had seen Roman, he’d been singing to a horse.
It wasn’t even his horse.
Virgil had wanted a break from the noise of the tavern and the simmering tension between his companions. But standing in the dark in an unfamiliar town had been unappealing and so he’d ducked into the taverns small stables. The hayloft was more of a glorified shelf, set close to the ceiling, but standing amongst the horses meant potentially having to explain himself to the horses’ owners and so he’d clambered up and shimmied his way into the narrow space, ducking down out of sight.
He just wanted a few minutes peace. Long enough to figure out what to do.
Logan had accepted a job. Without consulting either Patton or Virgil. It was a simple enough assignment -to transport a crate full of merchandise to a town on the other side of the mountain pass. So why could the townsfolk not deal with that themselves? Because the pass was full of bandits. Obviously.
Logan said they needed the money and he wasn’t wrong. Patton said they needed a break and he wasn’t wrong either.
They had been travelling from one skinflint town to the next for what felt like an age…but half the reason travel was taking so long was that right now they didn’t have enough coin to even to rent horses. Which meant Patton was going to end up dragging the gods-forsaken chest the entire way. Which was going to aggravate the hip injury- which he still refused to acknowledge existed - and leave all of them vulnerable to attack, since Logan wasn’t winning any fights unless it was a debate and Virgil…Virgil did better with the element of surprise.
Looming out of the darkness, his eyes glowing purple and his crossbow held aloft – Virgil had watched many an enemy turn tail and run at the sight of him with great satisfaction.
Actually aiming that crossbow, in broad daylight, at attacking bandits and successfully hitting one? That seemed less likely to be satisfying for anyone. Except maybe the bandits.
So now there was a stalemate, both Patton and Logan bristling at each other over their meal. Both waiting for Virgil to be the tiebreaker.
Hence the hiding in a hayloft.
Maybe if Logan had just talked to the them instead of making decisions for everyone-
“Who’s the prettiest girl in this stable? Is it you? I think it is!”
Virgil froze.
“My lady fair is pale as night and strong as all the stars that bright th- hey!” holding his breath, Virgil slowly turned his head until he could see the man below, who was currently trying to tug his sleeve out of the mouth of a blond mare. It was the bard from the tavern. Even without hearing his voice, the bright white outfit and ridiculously flouncy red jacket gave him away.
Virgil frowned. It was still relatively early in the evening and the bard had had a good audience – even Patton and Logan had looked away form their argument to appreciate his tune. Why leave now?
“Okay, okay you don’t like the classics.” The bard was back to petting the mare’s nose, “but you’re still stunning despite your terrible taste. And a beautiful horse deserves the most handsome of riders hmm?”
Virgil rolled his eyes and relaxed back against the hay. The movements of over the top performers were none of his business.
“That you singing back there?”
Virgil tensed again.
Two men were blocking the exit. Both big, broad and wearing matching insincere grins.
The one who’d spoken had a knife in his hand. The bard apparently didn’t notice and stepped away from the horse with his arms spread wide.
Under the dim shaft of moonlight spilling from the stable door, the silky material of the bards jacket seemed to shine.  It highlighted his pockets, where the thin material was sagging under the weight of his bulging coin pouch
“Always a pleasure to meet my fans!”
He gave them a cheeky bow, his pockets jingling as he moved.
Virgil resisted the urge to bang his head against the ceiling.
If this idiot wanted to get himself stabbed was it really Virgil’s responsibility to intervene?  What would Logan call this – natural selection?
“Must’ve made a pretty penny.”  It was the second man who spoke, he leaned carefully against the stable door as knife-guy stepped forward. “Nice voice like that.”
He looked pointedly at the bard’s jacket pocket. The bard took a half step back, almost disappearing from Virgil’s view.
“Your town is very generous.”
“Yeah. Good people” The second guy smiled. “Drop it.”
Virgil heard the bard sigh, deep and theatrical. But, much to Virgil’s relief, he threw the bag down on to the ground between them. Murder, Virgil was probably morally obligated to try to stop. But if the two robbers just took the bag and ran? Well. Patton was constantly asking Vigil and Logan to keep out of trouble so he could hardly disapprove.
Knife-guy grinned dumbly and reached down to his prize. Virgil tensed himself, he wasn’t going to be able to leap gracefully into action form his confined hiding place but he could potentially…roll onto the guy if he tried anything.
He didn’t get the chance.
As soon as the wannabe thief bent down the bard was on him. A blur of white and red shot out from beneath the hayloft, slammed the butt of a sword – had he always had a sword? – down on knife-guys skull sending him sprawling to the ground.
The second man let out a shout but before he had chance to take more than a step forward the bard was there, sword swinging though the air before coming to rest less than an inch from the man’s throat.
There was a pause whilst the man just gaped at the bard. Breathing heavily.
“You have a choice. Leave now, with your head still attached or…”
There was a yell and Virgil cursed himself for being distracted as knife-guy barrelled towards the pair, weapon raised high –
Only for it to instantly be knocked out his hand by the bard’s sword. The big man let out a high pitched yelp as blood spurted from where his fingers had been moments before, the knife clattering to the ground. The second man aimed a swing at the bards head but he dodged low, springing back up to deliver a punch of his own to the man’s throat, which left him gasping for breath.
At this point, knife guy clearly decided he’d had enough, running for the door with his bleeding hand clutched close to his chest. The second thief, seeing his backup flee, shot the bard a venomous glare and hurried after.
And then there was quiet.
“Sorry about that.” Virgil startled – was he talking to him? “My precious babies.” No. The bard was heading back towards the horses, who had been remarkably unconcerned throughout his ordeal.  This gave Virgil his first proper look at his face.
He looked young. Not much older than Logan. And tired.
“Did those mean old robbers scare you?” he cooed “Not to worry – your hero is here to save the day!”
With the bard facing the horses, Virgil took the opportunity to squirm out of his hiding place, managing to land lightly enough on the stable floor behind him.
“Hey.” He said.
The hero’s shriek of surprise was so loud that the horses reared up in their stalls.
After hasty explanations, Virgil had hired him as extra muscle for their trip. It’s wasn’t t an ideal solution, but the knowledge that there would be extra protection around for Logan and Virgil eased some of Patton’s tension. And since Sir Sing-A-Lot  had pissed off two would be thieves who were presumably still in town somewhere, he was willing to leave quickly and for cheap which suited Logan.
He met them the next day about a quarter mile out of town, performance outfit replaced with something moderately more travel worthy and sword strapped to his side. Virgil had suggested he stay the night at the tavern but he had shaken his head. Said if he went back in there the bartender would insist he stay to play another night – and then he’d have to let him down, which would be far too painful to bare.
Virgil privately thought skipping out halfway through the night was probably letting him down worse, but whatever. One mans loss is another man’s gain.
It was only when he’s was making the introductions that he realised Roman hadn’t brought his horse. Which led quickly to the realisation that there were three would be thieves in the stable that night.
Virgil spent most of the first day with his eyes fixed on Roman, waiting for him to betray them and skip off with the loot himself. But as the hours past and the bard did nothing suspicious he slowly started to relax.
It was only going to be three days.
***
Three years later, Virgil was growling to himself in his mother’s language as he swept his eyes across the room again, finding absolutely nothing. Not that he expected to -the small room wasn’t exactly flush with hiding places. All he had managed to unearth in the first frantic search was one of Roman’s notebooks, tossed under the bed with its leafy bookmark a few inches away. Patton had carefully put both away in his own coat pocket, a look of abject misery on his face as his hands ghosted over Romans drawings.
The thing was. It wasn’t like adding Roman to the group had instantly fixed everything.
But-
But Patton got sad sometimes. And Virgil, he’d been through a lot of the same stuff as the big guy but he didn’t know how to reach him when he got like that. Virgil was pretty sure he actually made things worse. But Roman – Roman distracted Patton without even trying half the time. He’d sing, weave a story out of nothing, disappear down a side street and reappear with a gaggle of kids and two puppies he seemingly conjured out of nowhere. The two of them had the same bright energy and when they got together they laughed loud enough to banish any shadow.
And Logan – Logan had this need to prove himself. All the time. He needed a challenge to throw himself against or he wilted. Patton hated arguing and Virgil frankly didn’t have the energy but Roman? Roman loved it. The two debated everything, from poetry to politics and threw themselves into preparation with more gusto than seemed healthy. The first big blow up they had, Virgil had looked over at Patton, panicked, before realising both men were grinning ear to ear. Relishing the debate in a way that Virgil didn’t really understand.
And as for Virgil himself…well actually he had always been perfectly fine and Roman basically drove him crazy.
But that wasn’t the point.
The point was, the four of them worked better as a four. They balanced each other out. Even if they sometimes went too far and hurt each others feelings, they always apologised and moved on. And even if having four meant that their could never be a tiebreaker and every decision had to be discussed around and around until someone gave in…that was just what family was like.
And now Roman was just going to walk away from them? Without even saying goodbye?
Unacceptable.
“This is all my fault.” Patton wailed for third time. “I never should have left him alone.”
And on top of everything he’d upset Patton? Virgil was going to find their wayward bard and bring him home. And then kill him.
“Tell us what he said again.” Logan demanded imperiously, notebook and pen at the ready as he stared Patton down.
Virgil sighed and answered for him:
“He told him he wanted to leave the city. And now he’s left the city.”
Logan frowned. “The city gates are closed at sunset – unless he had a royal decree he would have been unable to leave last night.”
Virgil grit his teeth, “Okay, so, assuming he didn’t know that – because none of the rest of us knew that – he left the inn to try to leave the city.”
“So then why leave the inn at all?” Logan continued, pacing up and down the limited floor space and utterly ignoring Virgil “Why not just wait till morning? It makes no sense unless.” He paused at the window. “Unless he was taken against his will.”
Patton and Virgil exchange wide eyed looks. Virgil was normally the one jumping to worst case scenarios, not Logan. “You, uhh, you got any evidence for that one Lo?”
“He left his sword.” Logan pointed. “Amongst almost all his other possessions – he told Patton he wasn’t safe and then he leaves without taking a weapon? It’s illogical.”
“I’m not sure he was thinking logically.” Patton said softly, looking at Romans neatly piled possessions. “You didn’t hear him guys he – he sounded so scared.”
Virgil flinched. Fingers flexing uselessly. “Okay. Okay so. What spooked him? Something in the forest?” He asked, thinking guilty of Romans thorn scratched hands after he’d got himself lost trying to escape Virgil foul mood. “He was totally spaced out last night.”
“He seemed fine this morning.” Patton said  with a frown “Logan?”
“He was fine before we saw The Crone.” Logan murmured, “he was, if anything, too effervescent. But when we left he seemed…” he trailed off, adjusting his glasses before glaring defensively at both of them “he didn’t say anything so I can’t be sure – but, he was very quiet. The Crone was northern so I thought perhaps homesickness? But I don’t believe he was scared. Not until the episode.”
Virgil nodded, Logan had already described the episode – Romans sudden sprint through the city street and subsequent panic attack – in detail, although he’d been unable to pin point what had set him off.
“Um I’m sorry …The Crone?” Patton looked horrified, “Logan, do you mean our customer?”
“I. Uhm.” Despite everything Virgil couldn’t help but grin the flush of embarrassment that quickly took over Logan’s face. “She was from the North” Logan told them with great dignity, “Roman has told us many time that it is considered rude to ask a strangers name on first meeting.”
“But, did you…know she was form the North? Before you started calling her crone?” Virgil couldn’t resist teasing.
“Logan that is so rude!” Patton said, giving his best disappointed dad eyes.
“SO rude.” Roman ginned  “honestly Patton – Virgil - this kind of behaviour reflects poorly on you as parents. I personally think you should send him to bed without supper.”
And Patton laughed, a secretly pleased smile at being compared to a parent and Virgil rolled his eyes and shrugged Romans hand off his shoulder and Logan let out an offended humph before reminding Roman, again, that he was only a few years older than him and if he was a child Roman was too and a brat besides – an old and well-worn argument that made all of them laugh, tension broken.
Except it wasn’t. Because Roman wasn’t there.
Instead Patton’s exaggerated disappointment mellowed into real sadness as he glanced around the room again and Logan hunched his shoulders, burying his face in his notebook. Silence filled the room.
“I’m going to uh, look outside again.” Virgil jerked his thumb awkwardly to the door and set off without waiting for a response.
Definitely kill him, Virgil thought. Once they were sure he was okay.
**
Apart from his unusual eye colour, pointed ears and a youthful complexion well into his thirties, Virgil had inherited very little from his mothers people. But his night vision was undeniably better than his fully human companions.
Not that it was doing him much good right now. Didn’t matter how good your eye sight was if there was nothing to see.
It was easy enough to track Roman from the open window, down the wall of torn climbing plants to the ground, but after that the trail immediately went cold. If this was a small town with a dirt road there would at least be footprints, but on the cobblestone streets of the well-to-do there was nothing to follow.
He could be anywhere.
Virgil kicked a pebble with a snarl, sending it clattering across the square. Reluctantly he started to prepare himself for the long climb back up to their room, when he was distracted by a faint whinnying.
The tavern connected to stables.
Huh.
Well….he knew Roman had been prepared to steal a horse before…
Quietly, Virgil slipped around the corner and into the stables. This was a far cry from the glorified shack where he had first met Roman. The ‘stables’ was more of a courtyard, with various coaches and waggons parked in the centre, and an enormous number of stalls ringing the outside. Virgil guessed it was shared between the tavern and the several other buildings that bordered the square.
His heart began to race.
He hadn’t really expected to see much – how would he know, after all, if a horse was missing? But with this much money in one place, there had to be a guard. Someone who might have seen Roman pass through.
He took a deep breath, trying to keep his expectations low, and began to search.
**
“Virgil. Did you kidnap a child?!”
Virgil winced. The force of Patton’s disappointed dad glare was a lot less funny when it was directed at him. “I mean,” he tried “is it kidnapping? She lives here! It’s not that bad!”
“I would say it’s significantly worse that calling a woman a crone in the privacy of your own head.” Logan muttered under his breath. Virgil glared at him.
“And I don’t live here,” the girl offered brightly “I just work in the stables.”
They were in the inn’s kitchen. Somewhere that they were absolutely not allowed to be. But between cancelling the promised performance, negotiating a week’s stay in an already overbooked establishment and then almost immediately afterwards cancelling that too and the panicked interrogation of the few remaining customers when they’d first discovered Roman missing; Virgil didn’t think the inn’s landlord could really get more irritated with them.
Although the whole kidnapping thing was probably not going to help.
“Here you go sweetheart.” Patton said, pushing a mug of sweet tea towards the girl and taking a seat next to her. He did not offer Virgil or Logan a cup.
“Thanks Mister Pat!” She smiled sweetly up at Patton before turning away from him and sticking her tongue out at Virgil. Virgil gestured wildly between the girl and himself but Patton just sipped his own drink, nose in the air.
Virgil slumped in his chair, glowering.
He’d found her sleeping in one of the empty stable stalls. The space was clearly being used as a hut for the stable boy – or in this case girl – with a small wooden bed pushed against the back wall and a desk covered in half cleaned riding gear near the entrance.
Elated to have found a possible lead he had rushed towards the bed and shaken the occupant awake immediately. And released in one horrifying instant that he was a fully grown man shaking a literal child who probably couldn’t even see him in the darkness.
She yelled.
He yelled.
She threw a horseshoe at his head.
He had managed to bundle her half way back to the inn - one hand clamped over her mouth despite the fact that she was biting him - before Patton appeared, ripping them apart with a growl and then blinking a Virgil in complete confusion when he realised who the would be kidnapper was.
“I – we – just want to ask you some questions.” Virgil said in his calmest I-am-not-deranged-I-have-just-had-a-very-long-day voice “Okay, um, sweetheart?”
All three of them stared at him.
“’Sweetheart’ sounds odd when you say it.”
“I know it does Lo’.”
“It might be the tone of voice.”
“I know it is, Lo’.”
“I’m Lucy.” Said the girl. Lucy sat back in her chair, swinging her legs back and forth. “Are you gonna’ pay me? The last guy gave me five gold pieces.” she grinned at them expectantly.
Virgil rolled his eyes. “Okay well, that’s ridiculous.”
“We don’t have much money.” Patton told her, “but I can make you another tea?” She considered him for a minute but was clearly already besotted with her ‘rescuer’, so she just smiled and held out her mug.
“Now,” Patton asked gently as he poured a refill. “What guy is this?  And…what did he ask you to do for that kind of money?”
She shrugged, unconcerned. “Just some rich guy. He wanted to know how many people had come in today, and then for me to let him hang around in my hut until his friend got there.”
“So you left your post?” Logan said disapprovingly. “What time did he arrive? What did he do? What friend was he meeting?”
“He paid me five gold pieces so he could sit in a shed” she told him. “If the guy wanted a horse he could have just bought one. And I just went and sat on the roof anyway, the market was way too busy.”
“Smart.” Virgil said. She glared at him, just long enough to let him know that his approval meant nothing, before continuing.
“He came just after four o’clock, that’s when Tommy goes home and I take over. And he didn’t do anything. Just sat there all grouchy. Then he left with the pretty guy.”
“Pretty?” Logan asked sharply, making Lucy giggle.
“Yeaaaah he had pretty eyes and a lute and really cute short hair. He was way better looking than the rich guy. I think he was a musician.” She sighed.
The three men glanced at each other, excitement building.
“Was he being taken by force?” Logan asked, steepling his hands “Could you see any sign of a struggle? Was he restrained in some way?”
“Logan don’t scare the kid for fucks sake.”
“Oh sorry, the one you kidnapped?”
“Guys.” Patton’s glare quelled them both into silence. Lucy took a long sip of tea, thinking before answering.
“He just walked up to him and they left together right away. I couldn’t hear nothin' but, they didn’t have time to say more than hello before they left.”
“So much for that theory.” Virgil muttered, disappointment settling in his chest. Not that he wanted Logan to be right, that Roman had been taken away by force but- this meant he really had just decided to leave them.
Logan wasn’t convinced. “A physical struggle is not necessarily required to move someone against their will – he could have been coerced.”
“How coercive can you be in one sentence??”
“If he was lying in wait and recognised him instantly the obviously we can assume they knew each other.” Logan told him snottily “Groundwork could have been laid beforehand.”
Virgil frowned, he hadn’t thought of that. But Roman hadn’t arrived until well past four – how had the mystery man known to come to this particular inn?
“Can you tell us anything about the first man?” Patton asked Lucy, “What he looked like or – ooh how about you draw a picture of him!” he produced Romans notebook from his pocket and opened it too a blank page.
“He was just some old rich guy,” she insisted “he was wearing one of those fancy patchwork coats. Pink and blue, and he had dark hair…” she shrugged. ”I don’t remember anything else, sorry Mister Pat.”
“What about an emblem?” Logan asked.
“What’s that?”
“A symbol of his house. Lots of rich people have them, maybe on a bit of jewellery or embroidered on his clothing?”
“He had a cape clasp with a pattern on it.” She said doubtfully, “it wasn’t fancy though just- here – “ she took the note book from Patton and hastily scribbled three interlocking Vs, the largest in the centre.
“We can go to the library and look for it when they open.” Logan told them brightly “If it’s one of the noble houses in the city we should be able to find an address.”
“And we can go see the cro – the customer too” Patton added putting a hand on the scholars shoulder, “Logan says Roman seemed down after they left- she might know something.”
“Right.” Virgil nodded absently.
“One of us should go to the city gates before they open,” Logan continued, “If he still intends to leave the city we can watch for him there.”
Virgil thought of the hordes of people making their way through the city gates. Spotting one man in amongst that throng was going to be near impossible. And even if they found a symbol that matched the child’s drawing, there was no guarantee they would be able to track down the owner. And from Logan's description, Roman hadn’t left his sight whilst they were at The Crones house, what could she possibly tell them that they didn’t already know?
And even if they found him. What good was that, if he truly wanted to leave? It’s not like they could order him to stay.
He felt one large, warm hand land on his shoulder and squeeze gently. “We’ll find him.” Patton told him reassuringly. At the table, Logan was scribbling in his note book again, eyes bright with excitement as he continued the barrage of questions at an amused looking Lucy.
Virgil nodded, and did his best to smile back.
It had been a long week on top of a long month of traveling, and none of their leads were things they could follow right now. They needed to sleep. Get enough rest for a full day of bard hunting in the morning.
And then, well.
If Roman wanted to leave he could leave.
But he was going to damm well explain himself to his family first.
Virgil glanced at Lucy who was watching them with open curiosity.
“I don’t suppose we could convince you not to mention the whole…kidnapping thing to the land lord right?”
She smiled at him. “That’s gonna cost you more than tea.”
Vigil sighed.

Disinterpretation
I finally finished the Sarah Z video about “pro vs. anti”.   It’s pretty long, and I ended up watching it in chunks over several days, but I think it’s worth watching, especially if you’re sort of partially connected to online fandom, but not enough to be aware of all the lingo.
As I expected, the whole thing was vague and confusing because the people involved in the conflict made it vague and confusing.   In theory, the full terms would be “pro-shipping” and “anti-shipping”, but it seems like it’s more about particular kinds of ships that could be considered controversial.  But that’s a slippery slope, and apparently the whole conflict mutated into both sides deciding that every hypothetical relationship between fictional characters is either equally valid or equally dangerous.
Long story short, it’s just purity culture, which was what everyone on Tumblr was calling it around 2012.  But now, if you’re a sane person who genuinely asks: “Who gives a fuck about Voltron?”, these people will jump your ass and accuse you of being on the side of their enemies.  “Children have died over the importance of Lotor/Hagger!   Your callous indifference proves that you yourself must have murdered children!”
I think what Sarah Z really hit upon in this video was that media consumption has become so ingrained in our culture that people feel like it has to go hand-in-hand with our morality.   That is, it’s not enough for me to watch Star Trek, I have to justify Star Trek as evidence that I’m a good person.  Maybe this is where the expression “guilty pleasure” comes from.   Conversely, it’s not enough for me to not watch Dr. Who, I have to somehow convince everyone that Dr. Who was invented by the devil.
Tumblr media
I’m pretty sure the Reylo ship has a lot to do with this, since it’s kind of understood to be a dark, problematic concept, and fans either embrace its flaws or recoil in horror because of them.   Star Wars itself is a dumb story about space wizards, so people try to give the debate more weight by linking it to freedom of self expression and/or enabling real world harm.   Suddenly it’s not enough to just think two actors would look cute making out instead of fighting.   Now it’s this battlefield for the soul of civilization or something.
Tumblr media
I grew up in the 80′s, when “concerned parents” and grifters would accuse the Smurfs and metal bands of promoting satanism and witchcraft.   I used to hear stories of teens going out into the woods in the middle of the night to do occult stuff, and all I could ever think about was: “Why would anyone bother wandering out in the woods in the middle of the night?”  Which is why “concerned parents” turned their attention to things that were closer to home, like Saturday morning cartoons.   It had nothing to do with the content; it was just about finding a safe, accessible target for their hysteria.   Some people want to go on a crusade without leaving the house, so they pick a fight with Papa Smurf instead of confronting the real evils in the world.  Even as a kid, I knew this was a con, because I’d watched the show for myself and knew it was too saccharine to be threat to anyone.
The pro/anti folks have tried to disguise this with a lot of terminology.   I wondered why they seemed to reluctant to use the full terms “pro-shipper” and “anti-shipper”, and it’s probably a couple of things.   First, the word “shipper” is basically an admission that this is pointless bullshit that doesn’t matter, and they’d like to avoid that connotation.   Second, they seem to have decided that this goes beyond shipping itself, into practically anything else they want it to involve.  It’s all part of the con, which is to make you believe that it’s “us vs. them”, and you can be part of “us” by curating specific attitudes about Steven Universe.
Seriously, “about Steven Universe” is such an incredible punchline.  You can make anything funnier by adding those three words to the end of a sentence.   “Do not interact if you blog about Steven Universe.”   “Hey, what’s up, YouTube, this is SSJ3RyokoLover69, and this is going to be kind of a serious video about Steven Universe.”   “Mrs. Johnson, the results of your biopsy are in, and I have some bad news about Steven Universe.”   It’s a fucking kids show.   “Oh no, all the characters look like the characters in all the other kids shows!”   Yeah, that’s because it’s a kids show.   Marvin looks like Garfield, this isn’t new.
The common denominator here seems to be that both sides try to wrap themselves in the flag of vulnerable groups: impressionable minors, trauma survivors, harassment victims, etc.   The “pros” want to protect those people so that they can feel free to explore weird subject matter on their own terms, and the “antis” want to protect the same people from being exposed to weird subject matter that they might not want to see.   It’s all about establishing a moral high ground.   Back in the day, it was called “sanctimony”.
But people get roped into this, because at their core, people want approval, and this stupid conflict offers them a sense of community.  As long as you support the cause, whatever it may be, you’ll have this online friend network that appears to support anything you do.   But if you deviate from their norm, you’ll be cast out.    Does this sound familiar?
Tumblr media
To use a more familiar example, I still sometimes find people clamoring about Gochi vs. Vegebul.   I’ve never understood this, because both ships were canon, and I never saw much direct evidence of a war between them, but people would still talk about how crazy the Vegebul shippers were, and how crazy the Gochi shippers were, and it was like some huge thing going on just over the hills.   It’s the same idea, since the idea that you could like both or neither never seems to occur to anyone involved.   I never gave a shit, because I used to see the same dumb agendas in the Harry Potter fandom.
Okay, so let me take you back.  It’s 2005 through 2011, and I’m hateblogging all seven Harry Potter novels, because fuck you, that’s why.  The funny thing I encountered was that occasionally fans seemed to want to pretend like my bashing of certain characters was proving them right somehow.    They were like “See?  He hates Ron Weasley too!  That proves that Seamus Finnegan is the coolest guy ever.”   The Slytherin stans would do this all the time, because I would constantly take the piss out of the Gryffindor characters for being self-important dopes.   I think they just liked hearing it from an outside perspective.   But I had to keep reminding them all that I hated all of them.   Every character from Harry Potter sucks ass. Voldemort was my favorite, but only because he was the one guy who wanted to kill all of the others.   But he sucks too because he failed.
And the shippers were the same way.   I’d say something shitty about Ron, because Ron sucks, and some smartass Joss Whedon fan would be like “Yes!  Boost the signal!  That is why Harry/Hermione is the best ship!”  And I’d be like “No, Harry and Hermione suck at least as bad as Ron does.  They’re all terrible and I hate them.”   I really do think there was some sort of Stockholm Syndrome going on with Harry Potter books, where everyone secretly knows they suck, but the fans sort of latch on to one or two characters and go like “Well, he’s not as shitty as the rest.”   Like finding spaghetti in the trash and picking out the meatball with the least amount of lint on it.   Then you’d go and start a flamewar with some other starving person over whether your meatball is shittier than theirs.  This is what people mean when they say to read another book.
Anyway, the big thing I picked up from Sarah Z’s video is “disinterpretation”, a term coined by MSNBC columnis Zeeshan Aleem.   The Twitter thread is worth a read, but the short version is that he once remarked that a Julia Louis-Dreyfus routine wasn’t very good, and someone got mad at him for insinuating that women are incapable of being funny.    They just took his dissatisfaction with one performance by one comedian as being a universal condemnation of women comedians in general.  And this sort of thing is all over the internet.   Everyone sees what they want to see and then they take it as permission to overreact.
I ran into this myself a while back, because someone saw who I interacted with on Twitter and decided that they’re all bad guys and if I have any interaction with them, then that makes me a bad guy too.   At the time I tried to play it cool, but the more I think about it, the more it ticks me off.   And over the course of that conversation, it was said that I don’t talk about myself much, and that’s kind of funny, because all I ever do on social media is write long-ass blog posts like this one.  I don’t expect anyone to memorize them, or even read them all the way through, but when I write all this stuff and someone goes out of their way to say they don’t know anything about me, the message is that they just didn’t pay attention to what I was saying, and they didn’t bother to try.
So I’m a little jaded from that, because I got called out for a bunch of stuff I didn’t even do or say, and apparently that’s just a thing that happens.   People will reject you for completely arbitrary reasons, not because of anything you actually said or did, and you’re left thinking you made some terrible mistake.   Except, no, I’ve seen it happen to other people, people a lore more conscientious than I am, and if they can’t satisfy the bullshit purity standards, then I never stood a chance.   If the game is rigged so I can’t win, then I’m not going to play.
And it’s that same condition that probably draws people into these online holy wars, because if you declare yourself for the pro or anti side, at least then you’ll have a posse backing you up.   Only they don’t support you, they support your willingness to support them.    Once your commitment to their agenda wavers, even in the slightest, they will turn against you.
Sarah Z suggests that both sides of the war drop the pro and anti terms, since they lost all meaning long ago.   But that just invites a new set of useless terms to perpetuate the same cycle.   Her more useful advice is for fandom people to broaden their horizons.   She got a lot of flak for tweeting “Go outside” once, but the ironic thing is that it’s sound advice.   I had lunch with my mom yesterday and it was just nice getting away from things for a while.   People need to do that more often, and unfortunately it feels like it’s harder to do than ever before.
But “go outside” isn’t just a literal thing.   It can mean going beyond your usual haunts, reading the same books, watching the same shows, rehashing the same conversations.   I think the reason this stuff always revolves around “shipping” is because there seems to be this deep-seated compulsion to pair fictional characters off like this, and for a lot of folks it’s the only way they can consume a story, so they do.   And they do it lot, and there’s a lot of them, and they do it the same way every time, and lo and behold the same old conflicts start up.   So maybe “go outside” should mean “go outside of that cycle once in a while.”   Just a thought.

Vows | Chapter Four
Summary: A faithful dog or a broken man… Whatever the case, Sandor has taken vows he does not intend on breaking.
Tumblr media
Like the beautiful bodies of those who died before growing old,
sadly shut away in sumptuous mausoleum,
roses by the head, jasmine at the feet -
so appear the longings that have passed
without being satisfied, not one of the granted
a single night of pleasure, or one of its radiant mornings.
 Longings ~ Constantine P. Cavafy
◇─◇──◇───◇────◇────◇───◇──◇─◇
Series Masterlist.
When he wakes, the room is dimly lit, a couple of flickering candles almost burnt down to the wick. Everything seems to be covered in smoke and the foul, acrid odor of tallow.
There are stains of dried ale all over his tunic, the watery kind he’s been downing for days, and the straw bed barely beats the comfort of hardwood floors, but he got what he paid for and he’s not planning on wasting every last coin so that the Stark girl will enjoy her privacy.
There’s heavy pounding at the door, the voices outside rising to a crescendo of rage before a man barges inside the room, short and drunk as any, followed by the stocky woman who robs Sandor blind every night for a pint of ale and broth you wouldn’t feed a pig.
“You got the money yet? We gave ya two days, s’time to pay up.”
His head is pounding as he rises from the bed, body aching in every way imaginable and hand twitching at the thought of silencing the scum before him.
The man’s hands get a hold of Sandor’s shirt, and the woman gasps. when he reaches for his sword, heavy metal pulling at his muscles.
“Listen here, pest, you ever let yer filthy hands near me again, you’ll be searching for them outside the city walls. Have I made myself clear?”
“Aye, ser.”
Sandor grunts, half satisfaction, half pain when the rage inside him fades.
“Don’t let me see you again.”
They both scurry away like frightened mice, filthy insects running from his boot.
The entire place stinks of wine and piss, dirt everywhere around him, and suddenly he longs for the comfort of his own chambers. Dark curtains that spare him from painful sunlight, fine selections of wine and peaceful silence, all things that made it his personal heaven until a certain northern girl invaded his life.
Now everything in it smells of rosewater.
They are no longer his quarters. The she-wolf took over with her many braids, silken dresses, and glassy Stark eyes that he would kill for, without knowing why. In her new lair, she takes the time to heal and lick her wounds. As wolves do, away from the eyes of others in fear of proving weak and falling prey to bigger predators.
Sandor allows it.
Within the hour, he’s ready to leave.
A little girl helps him dress, meekly passing him pieces of his armor despite him telling her there’s no need. She’s small and bruised all over, an abstract sculpture of bones that has seen and felt too much. He only lets her help when he sees the fear in her eyes and suspects that should he send her back, she might receive a beating.
When he’s strapping up, she takes the chance to shove her tiny hands into his pockets, quick and smooth as if she’s been trained for this. She walks away with two copper pennies.
He allows it.
◇─◇──◇───◇────◇────◇───◇──◇─◇
When he reaches the room, the door is ajar and he’s almost angry at how you never fail to make yourself vulnerable. There are threats left and right and you might as well be welcoming them. He moves to knock, he really does, but the wind beats him to it, pushing the door enough so that he might get a glimpse at you.
Suddenly, making his presence known doesn’t seem as appealing.
Your hair lies long and loose, obscuring the lightness of your dress, yet allowing glimpses of skin on your arms in a southern fashion. For once no plaits adorn it and it hangs in all its northern glory – a sharp contrast.
The handmaiden floats around you, hands curling in your locks as she runs a brush through them, tugging a little too painfully at every knot. He supposes a Stark girl’s hair is not made for this.
‘Any word from your brother, my lady?”
You hum and for a moment he deems it the most peaceful sound he’s ever heard from your lips, but it’s sorrowful. You accepted your fate long ago.
“Is there ever? I’m afraid the king is much too occupied with the newest impending threat. I suppose my brother is too small an enemy to consider when Stannis Baratheon is approaching the city.”
Nira gasps, almost dropping the brush and Sandor laughs to himself from where he stands behind the door. The maiden is older than you, yet you outsmart her in so many ways, you might not be quite the little bird he thought you were.
“Do you truly believe it, my lady, that Stannis will reach the capital?”
“Has the world ever known a Baratheon who failed to succeed in their quest? He will reach the city, Nira, for that rest assured. What happens after that, remains to be seen.”
She moves to face you, resting on her knees to grab your hands with a familiarity that surprises Sandor.
His lady wife is good at making friends.
“Even so, the King’s army will hold. The Lannister troops are already flooding the city, Lord Tywin made sure of it. No harm will come to you, my lady.”
Your own hand raises to her face, a gentle cradle of her cheek – a mother’s touch, the kind he’s long forgotten.
“I have no fear of Stannis. My greatest enemies surround me every day.”
“And yet, it seems that your lord husband’s presence has discouraged them.”
“All lions quiet before attacking their prey.”
The door slams then, the force of wind meets the force of man. Nira rushes to check, always mindful of her lady’s safety, but there’s no one there.
Still, the following days pass in relative silence, mindful of curious ears that creep behind closed doors. Nira has seen enough to know the crown has eyes and ears in every corner. Instead, there’s quiet singing when handling your hair and hushed whispers about childhood stories. Everything blurs with your drinking, honey mead, and berries melting on your tongue.
Sandor Clegane is nowadays quite literally, your shadow.
For a man who’s meant to guard the King, he seems to prefer keeping an eye on you. In the gardens, buried amongst roses and greenery, you can sense his presence. In the quarters you’re supposed to share, no one dares enter but Nira and yet, every now and then, you can hear heavy steps in the hallway.
He never addresses you and you feign ignorance in fear of him stopping.
Nira’s words keep coming back to you; he’s your best chance at safety in this city.
  ◇─◇──◇───◇────◇────◇───◇──◇─◇
Footsteps follow on your trail, the same sound of armor clinking with every step, albeit more graceful, less weighty. You’re awfully used to your loyal guard stomping around court, he makes no effort to conceal his presence.
A smile tugs at your lips, you’re starting to understand Sandor Clegane.
“You can always talk to me, you know.”
A hand appears from nowhere and tightens on your wrist, white-knuckled, strong. You turn to fight it but find your feet dragging along the marble as you lose your balance. He pins you to the wall so effortlessly.
“I’m well aware, Lady Stark.”
His breath stinks and he makes a point of shoving his face as close to yours as possible, all in a way that makes your legs go weak and your stomach churn. No fear, you remind yourself. He’s no big predator, he’s but a snake, lucky enough to find a mouse on the ground. Others would crush him.
“Ser Meryn, I would ask that you remove your hands.”
Gloved fingers grasp your chin, bound to leave bruises.
“I must admit, my Lady, that for a woman broken in by the Hound himself, you seem entirely too merry. Tell me, how is your dog treating you?”
Your body recoils, almost melting to the wall in an effort to avoid the proximity.
“I would also ask that you refer to my husband by his title.”
He laughs, such a disgusting sound.
“You’re in no position to ask for things, little lady.”
“And if you don’t let her go, you’ll be in no position to walk when I’m done with you. Your head will be hanging in the throne room if I have it my way.”
Your gaze turns to Sandor, familiar heavy footsteps approaching the scene. His sword is drawn, his eyes are murderous and for the first time, you realize the day might not end with your blood on the floor.
Trant laughs again and it’s a death wish.
“Now, now, Hound, it’s always good to share.”
“I don’t share, especially not with cunts like you. What’s wrong, Trant? I thought you liked them younger.”
His nose moves to graze against your skin, so close to your lips, tears gather in your eyes.
A friend of Robb’s had stolen your first kiss, pinned you against a stack of hey and touched places you would never have allowed him to. Your brothers beat him to the ground the next day.
Sandor Clegane won’t avenge your honor. He’ll chop off anyone’s hands the moment they touch you.
“I like them broken first and foremost. I’m sure you’ve taken care of that.”
White knuckles from clenching his fist too hard, and gritted teeth from the effort to keep his composure, Sandor’s large form exudes a burning animosity. His face is red with suppressed rage, and when Trant’s fingers make their way towards your chest, everything snaps inside him.
His sword never meets the hideous flesh of your attacker, but his fist does. A blow to the jaw, powerful enough to make the cracking sound echo in the hallway. Then Sandor’s hands are pressing his face into the wall, a great force overpowered by one greater. It gives you the chance to escape.
Your attacker seems light-headed, gripping his shattered nose where blood runs plenty. There’s stillness on both sides. If hatred was visible, the air would be all shades of red, scarlet and ruby, like the stains on Sandor’s glove. Then suddenly movement, so much force in every hit.
Sandor rains blows onto the man as if he means to smash him into the very earth and there’s barely any resistance. He doesn’t want him dead, he wants him smashed, obliterated, nothing left to bury.
The bloodied rat on the ground manages a hit on Sandor’s face and it only works to enrage him further.
You’ve seen him fight before in the tournament, moves sudden but precise when in duel, you’ve heard stories of men who’ve faced his sword, but this is different. It’s raw violence and force, uncharacteristic rage fueling him.
And then he stops.
He looks at you, always with his good side.
“Go back to yer room.”
You don’t move an inch. You know what this means, you know he’s not stopping and suddenly you’re but a youngling again, running around the training ground with Robb and Jon on your heels. Your father calls for them, forbids you from following.
At night you learn about the man whose head your father took before their eyes, a sight he sheltered you from.
You won’t let Sandor do the same.
Trant’s blood will be in your hands, whether you witness it or not. And so will your lord husband’s when word gets out that he pummeled a fellow Kingsguard member to death. You won’t allow it.
“I said, go back to yer room and lock the door. Don’t let anyone in until I tell ye.”
“I will if you come with me.”
The man scoffs, blood dripping from his fingers.
“Don’t question me, girl. I’ve got to finish some business.”
“If you stay, we both know it will be the end of you, one way or another. The things that Joffrey will do-“
“I’m not the one who needs protecting.”
“You will be if you don’t walk away. Just walk away, Sandor.”
It’s the first time he’s heard his name in a while, first time ever from your lips. Of course, he notices.
“I walk away now, he’ll do it again. I stay here and finish what I started, there’s one less cunt in this fuckin’ city.”
“And is that worth your head?”
He stares at you, so openly, his eyes still screaming murder, yet you refuse to relent.
All it takes a swing of his sword, a single move to push it in Trant’s heart while he’s gasping for air.
He turns to him, spitting on that mess of a face he’s created, branding his work, and then walks right past you, grabbing your arm right where the other man had. It hurts but you don’t dare tell him.
You let him drag you all the way to your chambers, smaller feet catching up with his strides.

Tumblr media
 ◇─◇──◇───◇────◇────◇───◇──◇─◇
He latches the door and sheds his gloves, then as many pieces of his armor as he can. He looks like he’s struggling to breathe and you worry. His face is flushed, angry scars growing paler every moment.
He reaches for the pitcher of mead on your table, a mistake. It’s awfully sweet, disgustingly so, and he spits it out the moment it meets his tongue, knocking the whole thing over in an effort to push it away.
“That’s not fucking wine.”
You move across the room, his hunched form still in the corner of your eye. His face is buried in his hands and he rubs desperately, most likely because the rush of blood in his head feels impossibly warm. That’s when you notice his bare knuckles, cut and bruised and bloodied all over.
You reach for the bottle of wine under the table, one he put there himself, and place it across him where you sit.
“You’re hurt.”
“Just shut up for a while, alright?”
You do as he asks, but your hands still reach for his. Of course, he pulls away.
“Are you fucking deaf?”
You smile, “I’m not talking.”
Sandor’s lips quirk at that. He watches you wipe away the blood, as gently as if tending to a child.
“It’s nothing.”
You only hum in response, following his previous order. The rug is wet and cold against the skin, relieving pain he has not felt yet. For once he doesn’t fight it.
“You should have let me kill ‘im.”
“I told you, the King would have your head.”
He snorts and it’s a sound you’re getting used to, “What it’s to you?”
“I have no wish for blood to be spilled in my name. Especially not yours.”
“You think of it so nobly, little bird. The blood is only in the hands of those who spill it. Guilt will get you killed, sooner or later.”
“So I’m not to hold myself accountable if you’re accused of attacking a fellow member of Kingsguard?”
The quirk falls from his lips.
“I’m not fucking Kingsguard.”
“You guard the King, do you not?”
You make him laugh and a sense of pride fills you. You gather it’s not something many can do.
Silence washes over you as you tend to his cuts, taking the bottle from his hands to pour wine on them plentiful.
“What the fuck are ye doing?
“I’ll get you more wine, but first I need to dress these.”
“They’re fine as they are.”
The look on your face gives away that you’re not backing down. Damn northern stubbornness.
You wrap his knuckles gently, a torn piece of fabric drenched in wine to prevent infections, the way your father taught you. You suppose it stings but Sandor makes no move to suggest so. When it’s done, you consider it, making sure there’s still blood flow. Your lips fall gently on the makeshift bandage in an almost kiss.
He pulls away like it burns.
“I want to thank you.”
“There’s no need, stupid girl.”
“Must you always interrupt me, my lord?”
“’m not your lord.”
“You’re my lord husband and I must address you some way. If not by title, then by name, but if you please, let me finish.”
He grows quiet.
“I want to thank you, Sandor, for everything, but I beg you, don’t fight for me. With what you did to Ser Meryn, all that Joffrey could do to you… I’m good as dead without you.”
There it is, your cards all on the table.
“I won’t turn into some cunt-proper lord just so your noble heart won’t be plagued with guilt, girl.”
“I never asked you to, I only ask that you don’t endanger yourself, certainly not for me.”
The man grunts and turns his gaze from you, which you take as a sign of agreement.
The table shakes when he moves to stand.
You grab his hand again, this time holding it in place.
“One more thing.”
“Spit it out.”
“I would be forever grateful if you could move back in. It’s my understanding that you’ve established a stay elsewhere, perhaps somewhere far more convenient…” He wants to laugh, the rat-filled room where he stays coming to mind, “…but I would feel much safer if you stayed here from now on.”
You can’t help but observe him, the deepest in thought you’ve ever seen him - good hand rubbing his beard.
“I can arrange for a second bed, or I can take the floor, it’s no issue. I only ask that you don’t leave.”
“Is fear worth your reputation, little bird? People will talk.”
“We are wed before the gods, let them talk. There are few things left for them to say about me anyway.”
At morning Nira arrives to find her lady awake, drinking at sunlight. A snoring lord continues his sleep undisturbed, boots half perched on the table while he rests, long and wide, on the uncomfortable armchair.
The stench of wine and sweat mixes with rosewater.
Her lady smiles.
“We are going to need another mattress.”

Dirigibles v1.0 Update
Dirigibles Update Version 1.0 =============================
It is finally here! With a huge influx of modifications I'm ready to call this update the version 1 update. Many things are still in the works but a ton of new features have been implemented.
EliteMobs ============================== One of the biggest game changers is the EliteMobs plugin. A brief synopsis of the features are as follows:
- New "Elite" mobs will spawn in the main world, the nether, and the end with a level between 1 and 999 - Mob levels are based on your current equipped gear, so difficulty scaling should match your equipment - Most mobs can be "Elite" - "Elite" mobs are identifiable from a distance by a white particle effect seen orbiting the mob which will change to a different particle effect as you get near - "Elite" mobs have high hit points, high damage, and drop special loot and special currency - Special currency can be used to buy unique gear and increase strength/drops of "Elite" mobs - Powers include invisibility, arrow immunity, and knock back resistance among others - "Event Bosses" can occur when 2 or more players are online - "Event Bosses" are very powerful enemies with special abilities and can be tracked by clicking the "Track Boss" link as it shows up in chat
There are many, many more details but feel free to ask questions when I'm on for more details.
Commands related to EliteMobs: /ag - Check/upgrade your guild rank /em check [yourusername] - Check your Elite Coin (EC) balance /em shop - Buy or sell loot from Elite Mobs for EC from procedurally generated items /em customshop - Buy or sell loot from Elite Mobs from admin defined items (currently default, but expect new items as time progresses) /em quest - Accept quests to earn EC
There is additionally a Adventurer's Guild related to this plugin, however a bug currently de-spawned the NPCs and I will need to work that issue out before it is functional again.
Multiverse ============================== The Multiverse plugin has been installed with the Core and Portal variants. With this, worlds will be created where some of them are interconnected inventories with specific game rules so that future dungeons and features can be implemented into the server. Some of the key features are as follows: - World creation and map additions can be managed by admin for unique world experiences - Worlds with different rule sets will be made to vary up the experience - Admin access to further expansion of game play experience - A Portal Hub has been created to easily jump between worlds
Portal Hub ============================== As mentioned above, the new Portal Hub has been created and set as a warp. The Portal Hub is a central location that will house gateways to new and exciting worlds! Access the Portal Hub by typing /warp Hub and you will be transported to the Hub. Currently, functioning Portals are:
- A portal to the Nether - A portal to World Spawn in the Main World - A portal to the Adventurer's guild (NPC's currently missing due to bug, but map is still available)
There is more information about upcoming portals in the "Upcoming Features" section below.
Coins ============================== The Coins plugin is a very simple, yet satisfying change to the server. Upon killing almost any Mob (aside from Wither Skeletons and Endermen due to public farms), they will drop a random amount of "Coins" with $5 - $20 value to be added straight to your /bal. Additionally, the plugin has enabled a "Death Penalty" to help balance the money drops and the EliteMob loot. The penalty will be a loss of a random value between $500 and $2000 upon death. This has also been implemented to counterbalance the KeepInventory gamerule as prior to the penalty, death was nothing but a minor inconvenience.
General Features/Changes ============================== Some commands and gamerule changes have been changed to better affect the gameplay experience:
- Gamerule MobGreifing has been set to false meaning creepers, elite creepers, blaze, and event bosses can no longer destroy the terrain/set fires as they use their abilities - /j,/jump has been disabled to help balance the experience and prevent future adventure map exploitation - The old mob based /warp hub has been deleted and the end based mob tower has been removed to make way for the future Mob Arena - Minor tweaks to inventory rules between worlds and gamemodes
Upcoming Features ============================== There are many upcoming features and events in the works within the Version 1 update of the Dirigibles Server. Please note that balancing and creation of these areas take time and will be announced in subsequent 1.0.x updates. Information on some of the features can be found below:
Mob Arena ============================== The Mob arena will be accessible from the Portal Hub. The Arena will consist of challenges that the individual can take where constant spawning waves of mobs in a large arena will allow an individual to farm coins by defeating mobs. Additionally, co-op and spectating will be developed so that it can be a social experience. Additional "completion" awards are to be determined, though prizes will be awarded to people who survive a challenge. Think of a Gladiator battle for prizes instead of eternal slavery.
Dungeons ============================== Server hosted dungeons and plots are in the works to expand on the "lore" and give opportunities for MASSIVE prizes ranging from items, cash, and others.
Weekly Black Market Deals ============================== Have you found the black market yet? Implementation of chest shops are in the works where black market deals will be available weekly of exotic items, discounted "steals," and various other deals. not HIMM has welcomed all authorized residents to pay him cash for his valuable goods.
Nightmare Realm ============================== A extreme world where the sun barely shines, beds don't work, and Elite Mobs spawn more frequently. Recommended to go into this world only if you're up for the challenge.
Final Words ============================== There are many Ideas I have for future content and will implement as much as I can in the near future. The goal is to remain a mostly Vanilla MC server, yet also include features that make the experience more engaging. So whether it is hunting down Elite Mobs in the caves, completing the next farm to become the server tycoon, or building a compound to show off to the other residents, how you choose to spend your time is up to you. Feedback is always encouraged as this is "our" server.
Additionally, these are all still new. And unlike normal MMO's, I don't have a massive crowd of people who can playtest and submit bug reports, so please let me know if something you run into seems "Game Breaking" in an advantageous, or disadvantageous manner. Additionally, if you run into a bug, let me know so that I can look into fixing it. I ran into a few massive bugs yesterday that I was able to squash, but it is the minor things that would need to be worked.
Most of all, thank you for being a part of our "community" and have fun!

adversary | sawamura daichi x reader
Title: Adversary Fandom: Haikyuu!! Character: Sawamura Daichi Genre: Angst Word Count: 995 Extra Info: Soulmate!AU // War!AU
Perhaps, in a different setting, it would’ve all been different.
You could’ve thought up a million and one scenarios, thousands of different settings in which you’d finally meet the one who was destined to be your soulmate. Perhaps in the corridors at school, perhaps at the airport. In a bar or on a beach in some far away, tropical paradise. All these settings were so different to the biting cold that froze your fingers to the core as you held onto the object that felt like a heavy, dead weight in your hands.
They were so different to the stories you’d been told, the stories in which the endings were always happy.
Your heart was pounding, your head thudding with an incurable headache. The loud gunshots rung all around you, and you couldn’t help but clench your fists, your gun gathering more weight with every passing second as fatigue overtook you. Still, your piercing eyes managed to stay focused.
You managed to manoeuvre through the battlefield. Skimming bullets with the skin of your teeth, on guard. Not taking one second off the field to analyse the aching in your foot, not allowing your mind to contemplate the countless comrades that you’d lost on this very day. Courtesy to the enemies, the adversaries that had declared war upon you.
Your eyes locked onto the figure that was currently stood, gun pointed towards you. Within a heartbeat, your own weapon was raised and you’d dropped into a crouch, eyes scanning the area for a potential refuge from the impact the bullet was bound to make.
Holding your breath, you noted that there was one bullet left. Your heart dropped to the depths of the ocean; this was a futile battle, what was the point in trying?
In every childhood story you’d been told about soulmates, you’d never once doubted that the same would happen to you. You’d meet, you’d connect instantly, you’d be tied together by an invisible bond. One that could never be broken for as long as your life spanned. Then, when your life was finally beginning to dwindle, you’d die happily. Knowing you’d lived a full, satisfying life.
One with the person you loved by your side.
Never in a million years had you ever contemplated the opposite side of the coin. The thought of dying alone, with nobody by your side sans for the pile of your fallen comrades that you’d gotten to know over the past months.
Nobody to hold your hand, to whisper how much they loved you as you slipped away into an endless slumber.
You felt the bile slowly crawling up your throat, and you couldn’t prevent the tears that sprang free from your eyes. Trailing down your cheeks silently as you pointed your gun at your adversary.
Your sworn enemy.
In that one second, your eyes connected. Clear, battle-hardened onyx colliding with your own saddened (E/C) eyes. Just as his hand rested on the trigger of his gun, he noticed it.
All the breath in his throat seized, and you mirrored his actions perfectly. A sense of knowledge, of enlightenment entering your brain and taking hold of your thoughts for just a second. Irrational thoughts screaming at you to drop your weapons, to race to the boy whose arms were held out. To pursue the childish dream you’d always kept of running into your soulmate’s arms, the place of all comfort. The source of security and safety like no other.
You could barely breathe, your fingers slowly releasing the weapon you held. The clatter of it hitting the ground was the only sound you could hear, as though the exhaustion you felt was so overwhelming you’d become deaf to all other noises. Focusing solely on the man destined to be your soulmate. Nobody else.
But he didn’t drop his gun.
No matter how loudly his brain screamed to him, he couldn’t put down the weapon that he held with jittery hands. His hands moved impulsively, finger meeting the trigger against his will. His mind was a hurricane of thoughts, swirling all around, because he knew he should’ve run to you. He knew, yet he stood still. Shellshocked as the bullet went flying through the air.
Just minutes after he met his soulmate, Daichi Sawamura crumpled to the floor when the impact of your wound caused you to sink to the ground. Life leaving your eyes in a split second.
He’d killed you.
5 YEARS LATER
There was a man stood, a bouquet of beautifully pieced together lilies in his hand. Tears dragged down his face, his shoulders shook as he stared at your name. Plastered across the gravestone. The woman he was supposed to love and cherish, care for and protect until your days ended rested at this place. Killed by none other than her own soulmate.
“(Y/N)...”  he tested the name out on his tongue for the umpteenth time, his mind trying to bring together all the thoughts that swarmed around his mind.
“(Y/N), I’m- I’m so sorry,” he began, his voice cracking as he studied your name, engraved with such care onto the gravestone that sat in front of him. What good was a sorry? It would all be futile, after all. Nothing could bring you back.
He crouched down, placing the lilies onto the gravestone with such care. Such gentleness that should’ve been used to look after you. The same hands that had held the weapon with which you’d been murdered.
“Perhaps-perhaps, in another lifetime. In another place, we’ll meet again, (Y/N),” he whispered, head bowed and shoulders shaking, the guilt pressing down on his heart heavily, “and we can live together, just as it should’ve been in the first place,”
Not one day had passed where he’d slept peacefully. The image of you haunted his dreams. Your scared eyes that froze in your face as your warm blood soaked the ground.
In a different setting, it would’ve all been different.

Silver for Monsters -- Ch. 5
Series: Witcher/Fairy Tail
Pairing: Gajevy
Summary: In a world ravaged by monsters where magic is becoming outlawed and nonhumans are hunted, the Witcher known as Black Steel Gajeel takes up a contract. He expects to find a simple old herbalist, terrorized by a beast in the woods. But in his many years he has learned to never trust what he expects.
Note: Ugh here it is.  It’s a filler/fanservice chapter born of jokes on stream, but I’m just trying to get the momentum moving again on this story so, I hope that you guys at least find it entertaining!!
If you like what you see, consider buying me a ko-fi. :]
Ch. 1 Ch. 2 Ch. 3 Ch. 4
“By the way,” the rose-haired man drawled into his pint, slapping another card onto the table, “what the everloving hell are you wearing?  That is not the armor I made for you.”  He gulped down the rest of his beer, looking Gajeel over with nothing short of disdain.
The Witcher scowled at the card the man had laid down and eased back in his chair.  He was at least six pints in, Natsu somehow ahead of him, and he couldn’t tell how long he had been here drinking.  Only that the streets outside were orange with the sunset.  Gajeel played his own card, and then looked back up to Natsu, who was waving over at Cana for a refill.  “Ran into an endrega nest, fucked up the polish.  Had to lift a new one,” he replied with a small shrug, slurring his words only slightly.  The prickle rippling through the blacksmith was just as satisfying as he’d expected.  “Ya wanna give me a new set, then be my guest.”
Natsu snorted, eagerly reaching for the new pint provided to him by the now very busy barmaid. There was a loaded pause, one that was not lost on the Witcher. “If you got the coin, you know how this works,” he said, arranging his lines of cards but looking not the slightest bit pleased with the spread.  He looked back and forth from Gajeel’s side to his own, then eased back a bit.  “Fucker,” he hissed.
Gajeel chuckled, leveling a satisfied stare at his rival.  “I could either clear out yer pockets for that, or ya could show me whatever it is that you’re avoiding mentionin’ from the shop,” a wry smirk, and the glare from his companion confirmed that there was definitely something worthwhile.
The blacksmith grumbled into his beer as he took another swig.  His disgruntled attitude melted away quickly and pride flickered in his eyes.  Quickly, a toothy grin spread on his face.  “Got somethin’ that might suit you, finished it months back and ain’t had a single person who can afford it or was even worth selling it to.  Come by in the morning and I’ll show you; that is if I don’t roast you before the night’s up.”
The Witcher chuckled into his drink.  “Why don’t ya try.”
“OI!” Cana’s immediate shout across the tavern had both of their hands up in appeasement, muttering unheard apologies, while keeping their gazes on each other.  The challenge still very much hung between them, but they dropped it for now.  They could have at it with each other another time.
“Me kickin’ your ass aside,” a mocking grunt answered him, “There any runnin’ specials on that armor?”
“Aside from what I’m already givin’ you for winning?  God damn Gajeel, Witchin’s made you greedy,” Natsu replied.  Gajeel merely shrugged, but remained quiet, waiting for an answer.  He eventually sighed in defeat, looking upwards. “Nothing special.  The drowners are acting up where my material supplier usually docks, I figure the residents have started dumping dead livestock there and it’s making it harder for him to make my deliveries.  Clear it out, and make sure it stays cleared, and I’ll knock off another hundred crowns.”  He didn’t need to tell Gajeel that his particular supplier couldn’t possibly dock in Novigrad’s port.  Either because whomever this supplier was, they were nonhuman, or because what he delivered was just too risky to be caught with.
Gajeel fought off the urge to bark back two hundred, reeling himself back in seeing as he already thrashed the blacksmith in gwent.  “Where’s his spot?” he asked simply.
After a brief moment, Natsu grinned devilishly, “There’s a small dock, on the northeast point of Farcorners.”
Gajeel stared at him quietly for several seconds to see if the man was kidding, but he was only met with an expectant, amused, and unbothered smile.  He didn’t know how Natsu got the idea that Gajeel would be tempted to get back to the see the sorceress, maybe because somehow the blacksmith has a connection with his own and understood the intrigue.  Gajeel wanted badly to ask more about his own connection, but that would open the door for Natsu to ask him about Levy, and that was a topic he was trying like hell to keep from landing back up on.  After a few more beats of silence, “Done,” he answered, knocking back the rest of his drink.
“Not now, I hope.  Be a waste of a good armor if you go and get yourself killed for trying to fight drunk.”
“Wouldn’t ya love that, Salamander,” he retorted.  Gajeel bore his teeth slightly, wanting so badly to hit him square in the chest with an Aard, but he restrained himself.  He couldn’t afford to piss off Cana again and owe her for a hole in the wall… again.  But there was always such a thrill in going against the blacksmith and the alcohol never helped.  They’d known each other for decades, and drank and fought for each one of them.  Friends, rivals, he’d never been able to pin one of them but he knew that he got endless amusement from riling up and antagonizing him.  Only because of what he knew crawled beneath that deceptively human skin and that he couldn’t actually unleash it to annihilate him.  But tonight he knew better, and he needed a place to sleep by the grace of the tavern’s owner.
That, there-not-there smoke wisped form the corner of Natsu’s mouth at the name, but he let it go, changing the subject.  The previous competitive aggression flickered off his face in a heartbeat and instead he looked at Gajeel like he was actually a friend.  “So, you gonna tell me what you’ve been up to aside from romancing the Lodge?” he asked with a toothy grin, and though Gajeel rolled his eyes, he happily transitioned into stories about recent contracts, rare beasts he’d encountered, and pointedly avoided any mention of the blue-haired sorceress.  They spoke late into the night before both finally called it and hobbled off, drunkenly, to their respective places to sleep.
For being on his best behavior, Cana had agreed to let him rent out one of the rooms for the night; and one of the best ones at that.  The Rosemary’s rooms were modest compared to many others, but to him he may as well have been in a manor compared to now he was used to sleeping.  On the hard ground, under a tree, hoping it didn’t rain or something didn’t creep up on them in the night.  Here he had a bed, a warm hearth, and what made this room the best: his own tub.
Steam billowed off the hot pool, and he had already leaned his swords against the bed and laid out his soon to be old armor on a chaise.  His head swimming in alcohol and a steady buzz already forming in his ears, the Witcher eased himself into his first bath in weeks that wasn’t a cold river.  As he immersed himself in that heat, so did he immerse himself in his thoughts.
As much as he tried to tell himself he was done with his contract, that it was time to move onto the next one, he couldn’t shake her from his thoughts.  She had latched on, settling herself in such a way that he swore he felt a tug in his heart to seek her out.  His mind locked down and gobbled up every detail of her, unwilling to lose a single shred.  Gajeel told himself it was simple infatuation.  He was a man’s man, and as Lily and his other acquaintances liked to tell him at times, he was a simple one.  Not simple as an insult, necessarily, but he knew what he liked, and typically if he wanted it, he went after it.  Gajeel had no reservations admiring the beauties of the flesh, and as a Witcher his basest desires were some of the only emotional inclinations that were left after the mutations had taken their holds on him.
But this, this felt different from infatuation or lust, as little as he was able to distinguish between emotional nuances.  And learning of the strange connections between Radovid’s movements, the activities here in this very city, and knowing she was just outside the walls of Novigrad where her hunter was currently docked, had his head spinning.  He’d taken her exactly where she wanted to go, and yet he had taken her to such a dangerous place.  Radovid had no need to commune with the Nilfgaardians to hunt down the sorceresses.  He was well within his means to do it himself without stooping to cavorting with the enemy, so what was different now?  Why would both sides work together to gain access to the five remaining sorceresses of the Lodge?
Gajeel groaned, dragging a wet hand through his now unbound hair.  He leaned his head back against the smooth wooden rim of the tub, then sunk in, submerging himself completely for several moments.  In the silent, immersive heat, his drunken mind wandered down simpler paths.  He thought again of that night after the Fiend, sitting in front of her fireplace as she tended to his wounds, touched his skin.  A burning in his chest forced him back up to the surface, and with both hands he wiped his face.
The Witcher groaned again into his hands as that memory took on a mind of its own.  He thought now of how much he would have wanted her to touch more of him.  He could feel her eyes on him, hear her breath hitch and hear the change in her heartbeat when he took off his armor and tunic.  Gajeel knew she was looking at him, at the bare skin, and now more than before, he savored that.  He imagined her trailing her fingers along each scar, featherlight touches sending chills through him, asking him how he got each one.  A wayward spear or five, a gryphon’s claws, a werewolf’s teeth, an endrega’s acid.  She would outline each one with her fingers as he told her, moving to the next, wondering if she should kiss them...
I wonder if she has any.
The sudden thought rocked him back to the present before he could finish imagining doing the same to her and he nearly choked, mouth completely dry. “Fuck,” he hissed.  The Witcher shook his head, scattering water from his black hair.  “Fucking dog,” he scolded himself.  “Fucking beer.”  With everything she had to face now, she was of course not thinking of him.  He was just the Witcher who’d happened to find her twice, and each time he served her a purpose and that was the end of it.  This was the end of it.  She hadn’t a thought to spare for him and he would do best to stop sparing them for her.
What was more, he didn’t know her at all, just who she was and some of what she could do.  He knew she was a skilled sorceress, he knew she was kind, he knew she was plucky and smart, and he knew she was beautiful.  Only a handful of things, and all very basic.  There was so much more that made up a person and he only had a handful of details.  She had even less of him: he was a Witcher, and good at killing.  That was it.
Gajeel growled deep in his throat and threw his gaze up to the roof.  Stick with the brothel girls, that’s so much simpler.  I don’t have time for this bullshit.  He had a job to do tomorrow, and then he would take himself, and his new armor, out of this shithole city.
After cleaning himself off, he rose from the now lukewarm water, illuminated by the candles about the room.  He grabbed a towel off the chair nearby and absentmindedly used it to dry his hair, hardly bothering with the rest of his crafted body.
He padded, dripping, over to the nearest window and didn’t give half a shit who saw him as he gazed out on the dimly lit city.  From the top floor, he had enough of a view to see several blocks, and though he knew he could not see all the way to Hierarch Square, he could see the orange aura, and the sparkling columns of smoke rising from whomever they’d caught that night.  Someone drunk and careless, having run into the wrong sort of people.  His gut twisted uncontrollably as every wet muscle tensed for a few seconds, knowing that in every realm of possibility, it could have been her.  As he turned to fall into bed, he refused to acknowledge even a kernel of that possibility.
Gajeel fell into sleep almost immediately after his head hit the pillow, and that entire night every one of his dreams was consumed with her, and everything he’d started to think of that his conscious mind wouldn’t fully allow.
‘You two continue as you have, together.’
‘We will.’
The words twisted, the first voice becoming it’s own, and her voice, the two words, becoming two separate threads. Their ends wove into each other, forming a knot, and she could feel a tug around her heart, staring at the tie.  Beyond it, in the dark, she saw the silhouette standing there, back to her.  The twin hilts peeked over his shoulder, and she didn’t need to see his face to know who it was.
Weakly, she reached out into the dark and wrapped her fingers around the knot, pulling lightly.  The silhouette of the man she knew faltered slightly, turning so slowly to look over his shoulder at her… or through her.  There was no recognition in his face, only surprise and a searching gaze.
She knew they were not alone.  She could feel the other presence, but even as she kept her grip on that tie, the thicker thread of the three lead off into pure black.  Nothing, but something attached.  She opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out, pure silence surrounding her until…
Until those two statements repeated themselves one more time, and she felt the tug once more in her chest.
The sun had barely started to light up the horizon when Gajeel stalked along the shore, looking for the dock Natsu had mentioned.  His body churned through alcohol faster than a normal man’s, but he still felt the effects of the many beers he downed that very night.  Still, his senses were more acute than a human’s, keenly listening for the signature gargle and choke of any drowners.
It took until he got closer to where Natsu had told him the dock would be for him to start to hear the sound.  Along with wet crunches, the sound of something tearing, and quick squabbles between multiple beasts.  A dumped carcass, or they got a hold of someone else, he thought.  The Witcher walked quietly, slowly, his yellow eyes nearly flaring in the low light as he focused ahead.
Everything in him stilled, every thought left his head except for what he came up upon now.  Gajeel reached behind him, grabbing the hilt of his silver blade.  With a soft hiss, he pulled it from its sheath, the pink dawnlight sparkling on it’s brilliant edges.
All the sounds along the shore stopped instantly, and a wicked grin spread onto his face.  They knew he was there, but no Gajeel did not pause, he held no reserve.  In many ways, he wanted them to know.  Drowners were simple.  They would not flee, they would not strategize.  They picked up on signs of new prey, and swarmed.  It was only a matter of drawing them all to him.  Something that his heart leapt at, that surged blood through his veins and sharpened every one of his senses.  He could smell them, hear every sound creeping towards him, and could feel the vibrations in the sand at his feet.
Gajeel spun his blade once, stalking forward enough to see their slick, blue and red bodies around the bend.  Each one of them already faced him, brandishing claws and gnashing bloody teeth. He could see why people thought they were born of drowned men, having the same shape as a human and looking as though they crept out of some fairytale.  It was some feeble attempt at coming up with reasoning for the monstrous bodies produced by the cataclysm so long ago.
There were only four total, trotting towards him with heavy, wet slaps on the sand.  He laughed under his breath, feeling one of the other few, base emotions that Witchers could still manage: predation.  Gajeel was a perfect hunter as he allowed them to approach, allowed them to take the first swing that he spun around on the balls of his feet.  He spun a full rotation, slicing his blade straight through the back of the first monster with little resistance.  Gajeel stomped his foot down to stop the turn and with a spray of sand quickly changed direction to swing back in the opposite direction, sinking his silver sword into the face of a second drowner.
Too quick, a third met his swing with a slash of rot-covered claws, sharp enough to pierce into his armor.  Gajeel bit out a growl of pain, dropping his wounded arm but swinging a heavy fist over his shoulder with his other hand.  It was enough to knock back the monster, but Gajeel had to jump backwards to avoid the teeth of the fourth, just as the third hauled itself up.  He swung to hurl blood off his blade and regained his footing and his stance, beckoning them both to come for him.  His silver blade was gripped in his right hand, and his left hand was poised up in front of him.
Both remaining drowners crept towards him, sounding like they were choking on their own saliva.  One barked out a snarl and lurched forward, just as Gajeel drew a single sign in the air and a wave of fire flew outwards to met them.  Both shrieked in complete agony, stumbling backwards while pawing at their faces.  They could not see the Witcher charge at them, twisting to the side enough to swing out a stroke with that blade so wide that it tore through both of them.
The two bodies dropped, twitching, into the sand with a wet thud, and Gajeel turned his gaze to the not-so-distant homes that surely must have been roused from sleep by this.  The homes, with their small pig pens and goat yards, must have been the ones disposing here.  The Witcher looked to the bodies, leeching black blood into the sand freely, and grabbed the nearest body.  He dragged it through the sand as much as he could before the ground beneath it ran clean again, and grabbed another to do the same.  He did this with each one of the bodies, and by the time he finished, Gajeel climbed up the bank several paces to observe the scene behind him.
Smeared messily, but still legibly into the sand with the bodies, was a simple message: ‘we eat.’
Ought to be enough to make them second guess it, Gajeel thought with a grin to himself.  Gruesome? Perhaps, but it was a clear enough message and he was not about to start preaching himself to the people that lived here.  He turned abruptly, ready to collect on his reward from his friend’s forge.
The Witcher found himself pausing, however, as he knew he would.  She was here.  This was where her friend lived, and where she was staying.  Hopefully concealed and safe from the Witch Hunters.  Gajeel rallied all his willpower to not go in her direction.  He knew he would be tempted to do so, and he knew it was useless to try.  It would be an affront, and it was none of his business to seek her out again.  What would he even say, or offer to her?  Some half-baked concern or desire to help?  He was a monster hunter for hire, not a body guard and certainly not guard to the Lodge.
Gajeel huffed out a breath, rolling his shoulders and trying to focus on the new armor he was about to attain.  Hopefully more comfortable than this ensemble he’d looted off a dead bandit.  Leave it.  Leave it alone and just move the fuck on, damnit, he scolded himself, his nerves still alive with the fire his dreams had ignited them with.  He’d awoken in a very cold sweat that morning, remembering every detail his mind had decided to conjure up.  He had been so entrenched in dreams so brazen that even his conscience must have caught up to how out of place it was and it jerked him awake so violently he felt as though dragged by his chest, heaving and sweating.  He swore to himself in that moment that he was already too deep.  Gajeel told himself to just let kingly plots take their own course.  Witchers were not political figures, they were not kingslayers(despite public opinion), and the war between two territories and their conspiracies had no place for him.  He knew this.  One any day he knew this.
And with that, he resolutely made his way back the way he had come, back through the southern gate to seek out his friend and cash in.  Gajeel focused on the intrigue of whatever awaited him in that shop.  As much as he clashed with Natsu, the man was a damn good blacksmith and could create finer wares than any he had encountered thus far.  Granted, the blacksmith had an edge, being what he was--or wasn’t, to the rest of the world--and if he said he had something good that he would not sell to just anyone, then it had to be extraordinary.  That was enough for him to fixate on, a small part of him growing eager at the prospect and what he was about to attain.
The streets were quiet, save for the march of guards and grumbles of the Witch Hunters, maybe a few sickened drunks, at this time of the morning.  He savored the quiet and the uncrowded streets as he made his way towards Natsu’s forge.  On the way, he could not help but pass through Hierarch Square, and could not help but stare at the burned shells of former beings on the pyres.  A halfling, and the body of what had clearly once been a male judging by the broad shoulders.  A tension he hadn’t known was there released from his shoulders, and with a small huff he continued onwards through the streets.
The sign for Natsu’s forge was only just starting to be lit by the morning light, creaking every so softly on its hinges in a gentle morning breeze.  Outside the city the air was fresh but here, near this forge, it smelled of smoke and the city’s own unique aroma of filth.  The Witcher squared himself in front of the door and a wicked grin spread on his face as he pounded his fist, loudly, on the door four times.  With his sensitive hearing, he heard a jump and the clatter of several dishes, knicknacks, etcetera.  A harsh swear, shuffling, and the spitting of his name.  Among other profanities and titles.
It took several moments for the door to rip open, and Gajeel hardly flinched as the surly blacksmith lurched out of the doorway and grabbed him by the front of his armor.  He could almost feel the heat spreading from where the grip was.
“Witcher…” he snarled, dark eyes glaring up at the morning’s offender, “do you have any clue what time it is?”
“I’m here to collect,” Gajeel replied simply.  “Your dock is clear.”
Slowly, with a gaze oozing hatred, he looked to the drowner blood flecked on his armor.  So it was.  “When I said… to come by in the ‘morning,’” he began, but the Witcher interrupted him.
“It’s mornin.’  Not my fault ya can’t bounce back the morning after like I can,” he said with a shrug, still grinning down at the furious man, eyes bloodshot from too much beer and not enough sleep.  “I did what ya asked and I got money in my pockets, ya gonna show me this armor or not.”
Another tense moment, and the blacksmith loosed his tense breath, letting go of the armor.  He turned from Gajeel waving over his shoulder, “Come in already.  Don’t touch anything,” he growled, earning a ‘yeah yeah’ from the man who had heard this many times before.  Natsu led Gajeel through the chaotic, cluttered space to the back of the shop where he had several large mannequins to display different armor sets.
Many of them looked like what Gajeel had already seen before from him, nothing particularly unusual but certainly his handiwork.  But then his eyes fell upon not one of the mannequins, but a neatly folded stack of armor and pants, with the boots and gauntlets laid next to it on the counter.  As though Natsu had taken the time to set them out the night before.  His heart tripped a beat at the sight of it, the metal of blackest black all so intricately crafted and layered that it was no wonder he wouldn’t sell it to anyone else.  “Ain’t this just the sweetest thing.  Ya made it just for me,” the Witcher crooned, and Natsu immediately snorted.
“Oh shove it, Black Steel,” he retorted, turning to stand by the armor and face his friend, resting his hand on the dark armor.  “Best materials supplied straight from Toissant.  Fire resistant, enhanced against slashing or tearing,” he paused and pointedly moved his gaze to the drying blood on Gajeel’s right arm, around the torn sleeve, “and sturdy enough to soften a hammer’s blow.  It’s not indestructible, even though I know that’s all you just heard, but damn if it’s not some of my finest work.  I’d normally charge over three thousand for the whole set, but for you…” he paused, thinking, “Nine hundred.”
Gajeel pondered the price for several quiet moments, unable to tear his gaze from the set.  Damn if it wasn’t the nicest thing he’d wear in a long time, and the price was a steal.  “Got one more thing to offer ya,” he started, reaching for a pouch at his hip that did not contain his coin.  Protest started to rise in the rose-haired male, but Gajeel cut him off waving his free hand.  “Cool it, I ain’t asking for more money off, just gonna sweeten the deal for ya.  Keep up our good faith.”
Natsu’s brows rose, waking up just a little more as he seemed to pick up on what Gajeel was offering.  “What did you bring?  From what?” he asked, eagerly, as the Witcher pulled out a bundled scrap of cloth that had been balled up to hold something within.  He handed it over to the blacksmith, who opened it up to reveal what looked like a long, moss-stained shard of wood.
“Spriggan contract a few weeks ago.  The smoke from that oughta knock ya on yer ass,” he explained with a small smirk as his friend sniffed at the piece.  Gajeel told himself that this was largely why the blacksmith continued to put up with him, aside from the steady flow of coin for his best wares, because it certainly wasn’t his shining personality or wicked left hook.
Natsu may have been trapped in a human body, but there were ways he could just touch, brush against what he used to be.  Nothing that would break the curse, but more of a high that fisstech could barely touch.  Burning any sort of enchanted, otherworldly wood produced smoke that to anyone else was nothing different, but to Natsu, it allowed him to hallucinate memories that he didn’t have access to anymore.  Memories that had been locked away with the curse to keep him from reaching for any sort knowledge that might help him out of that body.  Natsu had discovered it by accident nearly two decades ago, and it was how he had remembered he was even cursed to begin with.
He’d already known Gajeel at that point--who for the life of him couldn’t figure out why his medallion hummed around Natsu--and struck a deal with him to bring the materials, in exchange for cheaper prices off the best, mastercrafted armor he’d ever get his hands on.  Spriggan wood gave him almost a full three minutes, leshen wood just a hair less.  And the wood of any trees that had been enchanted or possessed gave him only about a minute.  He could never know what he would get, what memory, and how valuable or useless it would be, but if he wasn’t reliving a life far better than that stuck as a simple human, he was searching for anything he might have known about breaking curses.  Or the words used to deliver this curse to begin with.
Natsu nodded deeply, genuinely, to the Witcher.  “Consider yourself forgiven for wakin’ me up at the ass crack of dawn,” he grinned, flashing too-white teeth.  He wrapped the wood piece back up in the cloth and stuffed them into the pocket of his trousers.  “You remember where the back room is, go get yourself in it and I’ll make sure it fits.  You look like you been putting on weight so I’ll have to double check.”
Gajeel clicked his tongue, dropped his coin purse on the counter, and scooped up all of the items to head off into the back.  As he removed his old armor behind the closed door, he inspected the once-deep gouges the drowner had given him, already healing.  The scar forming at the edges of the tears was bright pink, fresh, and a new story to add to the spread across his skin.  He halted himself from thinking again about scars, and instead focused on getting himself into the new armor.  Not surprisingly, it fit almost perfectly and was leaps and bounds more comfortable than the older set.
He looked down at himself, moving in different ways to test the fit, admiring the harsh points, angles, and scale-like plates that rose up from his shoulders and spread across his chest.  Typical, he thought, amused.  The blacksmith certainly had his trademark, and the more he remembered about himself the more his armor style evolved.  For the better.
Gajeel looked at himself in the small tabletop mirror and grinned in approval.  He’d be a force to be reckoned with in these.  The Witcher tied up his black main into a ponytail once again with a long strip of leather, and rolled his shoulders after to assure himself of the fit.
More than pleased with the weight and the feel of the armor, he gathered up the old armor and proceeded out of the room.  He had already started to speak when he just barely heard a door open at the front of the shop, “Ya want these old ones for inspiration, right?” he taunted, looking up from his arms as he rounded the corner and saw Natsu holding the door open.  In the doorway were two hooded figures, one slender male with orange hair, the other a noticeably shorter female, dull brown locks peeking out of the hood.
Both looked to him quickly, and he could see their eyes widen in the shadow of their hoods, as Gajeel’s mouth went dry.

Tumblr media
Okay...I wasn't expecting that.
I fully admit I nearly cried when Emilia asked Subaru to tell her about Rem on the ride back to the mansion. It was sad, it was sweet, it was touching. It hit a lot of spots for me.
The Sleeping Beauty illness is a pretty interesting sickness. Rem won't age or need to eat while she's trapped in her coma. She is basically kind of immortal and it's a very subtly cruel fate. No one remembers the victim and not even a natural death can free them of their fate, as they just simply exist without even their loved ones to acknowledge them.
“The contents of the letter of goodwill were written by Rem. I’m the one who asked it to be sent, so if Crusch handed it to the messenger...only the fact that it was handed over stayed the same, and only the contents were erased.”
That was the sloppy adjustment to the erasure of the memory of Rem from the world.
I love stuff like this. A clue hidden in plain sight that was always there and brought up repeatedly, kind of like the small dog in the village being the shaman. Subaru didn't make a stupid mistake and there was no sabotage to try and get the two camps to be against each other. The letter was blank because Rem wrote it and all traces of her existence, save for her body, have been erased. Also really drives home the tragedy that, even if Subaru's save point hadn't been updated to Rem's bedside, there was no way to save her after defeating the White Whale. It was too late to catch up with her. Though now I'm curious, because I don't remember if it was ever stated how far before Subaru had arrived that Ram received the letter, so there is a chance she had read Rem's actual message before it was erased from her mind. I wonder if she was in the middle of making any preparations when it was replaced in her mind as a blank letter?
Obviously it's always been a thing in the story but I think it finally fully hit me with the art
of Subaru and Petra watching the comatose Rem that, yeah, Subaru's eyes really do look pretty villainous.
I know it's an easy typo to make but I can't help but notice the number of times this volume and last keep mixing up Rem and Ram's names, saying that Rem is at sanctuary when they really mean Ram.
“Now, what do you wish to ask about? Daphne, the Witch of Gluttony, creator of beasts in defiance of the will of Heaven to save the world from starvation? Camilla, the Witch of Lust, filled with love for the world, granter of emotions to they that are inhuman? Minerva, the Witch of Wrath, who, lamenting a world filled with conflict, sets people straight through her fists? Sekhmet, the Witch of Sloth, who, wanting a moment’s peace, drove the dragons beyond the Great Waterfalls for that reason alone? Or Typhon, the Witch of Pride, the young, innocent, merciless one who continued to render judgment onto sinners?”
F**k yeah, lore drop! It also again opens up the question of whether Satella and the other witches were really evil or if misunderstandings had history turn them into monsters? Because honestly even this has it feel like it could go either way. We already met the White Whale, which is associated with gluttony. If Daphne created the creature to "save the world from starvation", then it is accurate in a very twisted way. Yeah, people won't starve when they're dead and forgotten or trapped in a stasis coma. Unless Echidna means the beast were created to provide more food, which I don't think works out either given how strong they are. Given Satella's warped way of showing her "love" for Subaru, the implication could be that all the witches desire pure and noble things but are also bat-sh*t f**king crazy and have really messed up ways of going about that.
“...It bears mentioning that I’m a pauper up there with the best of ’em. A Witch’s compensation is not paid in coin. What I seek from you is a pact. My terms are that you are forbidden from speaking to others about what took place at this tea party. You are bound by a similar pact, so it is a simple matter for you, is it not?”
So RBD may be a pact? Would that imply is was something Subaru agreed to? In the story we've seen, I think the pact might have been formed upon his first death, with Emilia dying beside him, and him doing whatever it'd take to save her. I can see an opening for Satella there.
“I succeeded in forming an alliance with Crusch. Satisfied with the results of leaving me there now?”
“Ahh, I am most saaatisfied. Truly, truly, you have acquired something difficult and long yearned for.”
“...That so.”
Subaru: "Oh, by the way, you owe a bunch of money I promised to people in Anastasia's group. Have fun with that."
“The reason is simple. This land has been under the care of the Mathers family, passed down from generation to generation. It began under the lord of this house at the time...the Roswaal from which I inherit this name. In other words, it is from this Roswaal in history that this Sanctuary has been passed down.”
When Subaru broached the issue of his relationship to the Witch, Roswaal followed suit, filling in the blanks. The explanation left Emilia touching her own lips, knitting her refined eyebrows.
“‘In history’... Then the Mathers family has been involved with the Witch of Greed since long...”
So Roswaal and his family have a personal connection to Echidna, one of the six witches Satella absorbed and the enemies of the dragon, whom Roswaal talked about in his goal relating to when the dragon dies. Though it's still up in the air how nefarious his goals are or even what specifically he wants.
“Setting that aside, what are you gonna do about this plate of green peas? I tried to pass it to Daddy, Daddy passed it to Mom, and Mom passed it to me, and we’ve been going around in circles...”
“But Mom hates green peas. I hate even looking at them.”
“And you were trying to overcome me being picky?!”
“Ah, don’t misunderstand me, it’s not just green peas that Mom hates, it’s all food that’s little and round like that. It feels icky to put them in my mouth.”
“That’s not a misunderstanding, then—if anything it just sounds even fishier than before!”
Deflated by his mother’s impactful statement, Subaru grudgingly pushed the plate of green peas Kenichi’s way.
“Well, it’s the husband’s place to take responsibility for the wife, so I’ll leave it to Daddy to reap the fruits of defeat.”
“Hey, don’t make me feel all lonely here, Subaru. We’re family getting along like few do these days, right? In other words, if Mom hates it, Daddy hates it, too.”
“Man, I really feel for this forest of green, nobody’s happy with it!”
What the f**k am I reading?
In all seriousness, this whole section of the book is pretty good. In regards to light novels, I've only read three other Isekai series: Overlord, Konosuba, and Rising of the Shield Hero. And in all three series the MC's parents aren't really a factor that get brought up in many significant ways. Ainz's parents sadly died when he was a kid. Kazuma died and was reborn into a fantasy world, with everyone including his parent having trouble not laughing over the really pathetic way he died, so he doesn't like thinking about them too much. And while Naofumi sometimes thinks about his parents, it's far more often his brother comes up because of the pressure that was placed on him because of their parents. I never would have thought Subaru's relationship with his parents would be such a major thing the story would explore.
This whole part feels a little like a self-help book, in a good way. Subaru reflects a lot on his faults and why he retreated into himself for so long. He's grown, but his also still growing, which I think is really important for a character like him. I know there are people who've seen Re:Zero who have a problem with how sad and pathetic Subaru can be, but given that it serves a purpose and it consistently has had payoff, I don't see why it's a bad thing. Subaru as his is now is not the same man as he was when he first entered the story and, if the quality stays consistent, he won't be the same later in the story as he is now.
“I mean, if you want me to abandon you, you’ve gotta be more proactive about it. Who abandons his own kid just because he crawls into his own shell? If you want me to hate you, you should commit genocide on half of humanity for no particular reason. Then I’ll hate you.”
“That’s a crazy thing to ask for!! You don’t see many villains like that even in shonen manga!!”
Funny enough I feel like a version of Subaru who'd do that would be more like comic Thanos than movie Thanos. Less about trying to save humanity from itself and more just trying to impress a girl. I wonder which AU sin version that would be?
He’d been so convinced he’d kept his inner feelings hidden, but in truth, it had all been in vain. This in spite of the fact that he’d thought himself lonely and miserable with not a single person the wiser.
I love how this can relate back to Emilia and Rem's relationships with Subaru. During the mansion arc and White Whale arc Subaru was cracking under the stress and despair RBD had given him, trying to hide it best as he could but the two still saw through him anyway. Emilia is the one who I think most directly commented on it, offering him the lap pillow when he was overworking himself out of fear and even when he said a lot of terrible things to her on his last loop before they took down the whale, she talked about how sad he looked and how much pain he was in.
It was his bad habit to suddenly lose it in the middle of a conversation. Just how much had he run in circles at the royal capital because of that short temper? He focused on deep breathing. Breathe in, breathe out. He did this a second time, and then a third.
“...Let’s...talk about everything in order, starting with this coconspirator business.”
Character growth. Always welcome. Obviously it might be a little too early to say this but I'm glad Subaru isn't just repeating the same problems and conflicts he did in the first three arcs. He's not over his faults but he's not being tripped up by the same personal flaws that tripped him up before. He's actually learned from his experiences and grew as a person.
Even before Rem was erased, Ram's loyalty to Roswaal was greater than anything else. But I'm really curious what effect we'll see going forward. Is Ram even more devoted to Roswaal than before or has the loss of someone she loved so much detached something within her? Rem was clearly important to Ram too, as we saw fully in the mansion arc loop when she died. Is her relationship with her master going to change now that a significant part of her life is just gone, like it never existed?
“For three days I’ve been watchin’ Lady Emilia challenge the trial, same as you. It’s breakin’ her. Seein’ her come out all messed up like that—I can’t stand to watch.”
Crinkling the skin of his nose, Garfiel brought up the heartbreaking sight of Emilia right after emerging from the tomb.
The number of times Emilia had failed to overcome the trial were adding up. But it wasn’t just that—it was the sight of her turning back: broken, panicked, calling for Puck, then finally sleeping as if her strength was exhausted.
I wonder if the story is trying to put Emilia through basically a similar experience as Subaru's? Being broken by repeated failures in a past she can't overcome. The one advantage she has over him is that everyone knows she's going through a terrible ordeal, even if they don't know what specifically, while Subaru's curse keeps him from letting anyone know he's been going through anything.
“—I told you to take care of your bowels until the next time we meet.”
Oy, this bitch.
This book gave me two things I'm glad about. The first is that it made the loss of Rem a lot easier to deal with by simple virtue of everyone believing Subaru that they knew Rem and she was erased from their memories, in no small part in that the characters aren't stupid and can see the similarities between her and Ram. She hasn't been abandoned and Subaru doesn't have to carry the burden of trying to bring her back by himself. The other is something I've wanted to see for a while and it's Subaru and Emilia on the same page and working together. They're trusting and relying on each other, even if neither knows the other's full story. They're not pushing each other away or keeping the other at arms length. Their relationship can actually DEVELOP because they're actually moving forward together.

To add on to this (alttp was and still is my favorite game) he has a bunch of magic medallions:
Ether Medallion - this one will freeze all nearby enemies. It does drain a lot of magic, but if you smack the enemies with the hammer you will most of the time get magic refills
Bombos Medallion - all enemies will burn up. Was my favorite even though it drained just as much magic as the Ether but with a lot smaller chance of magic refills. But it just had some very satisfying fwoomp noises before the bombs dropped.
Quaker Medallion - will cause an earthquake. I hardly used this one, but it will kill weak enemies and transform stronger ones into some blob slime thing. I only used it to gain access to Turtle Rock. Draines as much magic as the other two.
Bee Badge - this one's from albw and it makes bees friendly and they will attack enemies for you if any show up. Draines no magic.
He has a bunch of magic rods and most have names that imply what they do/affect (ice, fire, sand, tornado, season) but we also have the cane of somaria which summons a block and when dispelled will shoot out little beams in four directions that can harm enemies or activate pussles. The cane of byrna prevents him from taking damage.
He has an ivisibility cape that also makes him invincible. One thing that makes it better imo than the cane of byrna is that enemies can't knock you back like they can if you use the cane
In the Oracle games he have the Roc's feather which later is upgraded to a cape which will allow him to jump/glide through the air. He also have magnetic gloves which he can use to eg repell/attract himself over gaps etc. He aslo have a switch hook/long switch which kinda works like a hook shot but instead of pulling things towards him or vice versa he'll swap places with the pot or enemy or whatever. He also have various magical seeds (i remember one kind lit stuff on fire and another one gave him speed but there were more) and an upgraded slingshot that will scatter seeds in three directions and a seed shooter that will shoot seeds so they bounce on walls and hit hard to reach areas.
The hint glasses from albw lets him see friendly ghosts who will offer him hints (if you give them play coins that is)
question for legend fans
are there any particular magic abilities of theirs that you think are really cool and generally not represented in fics? i’m gonna have them show off some abilities in a modern with magic au i’m writing but i haven’t played any of their games (i have links awakening but i’ve been p busy to get into a new game).
feel free to infodump, mention, gimme some resources on all the cool stuff legend can do! imma look up some myself but i’m not too informed on the details so. thought i’d ask here <3

Dragon Ball Movie 1: Curse of the Blood Rubies
Tumblr media
I wanted to cover the movies during this liveblog, so I decided the best way to do that was to try to do them as they came out alongside the episodes of the TV show.   Movie 1 premiered at the Toei Cartoon Festival on December 20, 1986, right after Episode 43 aired on television.   From what I read on Kaizenshuu.com, the idea was that Toei would run these film festivals when kids were on break from school.   So if you were a huge Dragon Ball fan in 1986, you could watch Episode 43 on TV, bug your parents to take you to see Movie 1 in theaters, and then catch Episode 44 a few days later.   But they were screening the Cartoon Festival for at least a few weeks after December 20, so I’m sure a lot of fans saw it later.   Anyway, I’m trying to replicate that general chronology.
For my part, this was one of the last pieces of Dragon Ball anime I purchased, because it took years for an official Funimation dub to be released in the U.S.   For a long time, the rights to distribute Movie 1 and the first thirteen episodes of Dragon Ball in the U.S. were held up by KidMark, and Funimation didn’t secure the rights until about 2009 or so.   That was when they released the “Blue Brick” box sets, which included the first thirteen episodes, but not the movie.   That wasn’t released until 2010.    So I’ve only seen this thing once before today.
Truthfully, I’m not a big fan of the movie, because it’s a sort of retelling of the original Dragon Ball storyline, only with a new villan and other new characters included.   Several later films would adopt this same formula, most notably “Path to Power” in 1996, but also the bootleg live action films “Dragon Ball: The Magic Begins” (made in Taiwan) and “Fight Son Goku, Win Son Goku” (made in Korea).   And “Dragon Ball Evolution” looks an awful lot like a retelling of the first 13 episodes of Dragon Ball, only with Piccolo as the villain and Chi-Chi as a love interest for Goku.     I get it, it’s a good story, and maybe it’s worth repeating, but I just read the original version a couple of weeks ago.    My favorite thing about Dragon Ball is how the story keeps expanding and moving in new directions, not rehashing the same stuff over and over.
Tumblr media
We open with the Toei logo.   When you see this, you know some serious shit’s about to go down.  And the movie does start out with some really gorgeous visuals and animation, mostly setting up the concept of what the Dragon Balls are.
Tumblr media
Then we start in the Land of Gurumes, where the local ecology is being ravaged by strip mining.    One little girl named Pansy tries to fight back by shooting a worker with a slingshot, and her father stands up to the royal guards when they try to punish her.
Tumblr media
But the king has stronger henchmen to keep guys like him in line.   Bongo, for example, isn’t interested in any sob stories about the EPA or sick children or whatever.   He thinks the rubies they’re digging up from the ground more than make up for whatever environmental damage is being caused.  Then he jumps in a car with his partner Pasta and they head back to the castle.
Tumblr media
Is... Is that Kato?   Well, whatever, Bongo and Pasta report to King Gurumes that they’ve located another Dragon Ball, and he’s pretty pleased to hear that, since he’s starving to death.    According to his ramblings, only the tastiest food can satisfy his hunger, and he’s reached the limit of what the finest cooks and chefs and prepare for him.   If I’m understanding this correctly, once he eats something, it can no longer satisfy him ever again.    So he wants the Dragon Balls so he can ask Shenron to finally put an end to his hunger.   I’m not sure if he means a cure for his curse, or if he just wants to wish for the world’s most delicious food.
Tumblr media
Then we check in on Goku, who’s basically playing out the same story we’ve seen before.   He catches a fish, Bulma hits him with her car motorcycle, but this time, there’s a plane landing in Goku’s backyard.   Goku notices Bulma’s Dragon Ball, and she explains it to him, and then she realizes that whoever’s in the plane is trying to take the Dragon Ball Goku has at his house.
Tumblr media
By the time they arrive, Pasta and Bongo have already left, and they’ve dropped off a gold coin, apparently as payment for Gokus’ Dragon Ball.  Bulma whips out a plane of her own to give chase, and while she manages to take out Pasta’s Dragon Radar, they still get shot down, and Pasta and Bongo get away.
Tumblr media
Bulma and Goku continue their search by car, and they happen to drive by Pansy, who is being menaced by Oolong.   Bulma sees to Pansy while Goku chases Oolong away, but this leads them straight into...
Tumblr media
...Puar, and his sidekick Yamcha.   Wait.
Yamcha and Goku fight, just like they did in the TV seres, but with a bigger animation budget, and then Bulma shows up and Yamcha falls off a ledge, knocking out one of his teeth.
Later, Bulma and Pansy compare notes in a mobile home.  I assume it’s Oolong’s, since it’s like the one he had in the original story, but Bulma never lost her own capsules in this version, so it might be hers.   Pansy’s plan is to seek help from Master Roshi.    According to her, King Gurumes was corrupted by the “Rich Stones”, which is what they call the rubies they’re mining out of the ground.   I can see why the English dubs refer to them as “Blood Rubies”, since that’s a much more dramatic name.
What I don’t understand is whether the Blood Rubies actually have some sort of magic power to curse people, or if Gurumes has simply succumbed to plain old greed.  I guess you’d need a magic curse to explain his distorted appearance and insatiable hunger.   But did he eat a Blood Ruby at some point?   Pasta and Bongo want the Blood Ruby mining to continue as well, so why haven’t they been cursed as well?   Anyway, Gurumes is obsessed with accumulating more and more Blood Rubies, even though he already has tons of them in his royal treasury, and even though he’s currently suffering from his hunger problems.
Tumblr media
Bulma agrees to take Pansy to Master Roshi, since they share a common enemy, however, when Roshi meets them, he accuses Goku of plotting to kill him.  Turns out Yamcha was spying on Bulma and Pansy’s conversation, and he hatched a scheme to get to Roshi first and trick him into taking out Goku for him, so that he could secure the Dragon Balls for himself.
Wait, that doesn’t make sense.  Gurumes has most of the Dragon Balls right now.  Six of them, actually.   What good would it do Yamcha to eliminate Goku now?  Well, it doesn’t matter for long, since Roshi summons the Kinto’Un to see who’s telling the truth.   When Goku proves he’s pure of heart by riding Kinto’Un, Yamcha’s deception is exposed, so he runs away.
Tumblr media
Then Pasta and Bongo show up in a submarine and bombard Roshi’s island. Roshi gets pissed about his house being blown up and retaliates with a Kamehameha wave, which drives the bad guys away.    Naturaly, Goku wants to learn it too, and he manages to imitate it on his first try.
At that point, Bulma notices the Dragon Ball hanging from Roshi’s neck, and he agrees to give it to her if he can touch her boobs.   So Bulma gets Oolong to shape-shift into a fake Bulma and... yeah we all saw Episode 8.   Same thing.
Incidentally, Bulma got a haircut sometime before they arrived at Roshi’s place.   In the first half of the movie, she looks like this:
Tumblr media
But after she arrives on Roshi’s Island she looks like this:
Tumblr media
I mean, that’s a lot of hair to lose from one scene to another, isn’t it?
Tumblr media
The gang finally heads for the Land of Gurumes to take the fight to him.   Pansy asked Roshi to help them, but he said no, because as a martials arts master, he’s become too far removed from the affairs of the outside world, or some other B.S.   I’m pretty sure the real reason he doesn’t come along is because he didn’t join Bulma and Goku in the manga either, but he can’t just say that out loud.
He tells Pansy that she’s already got a fine group of friends to help her, so everything out to work out for her.   This really sounds like a cop-out.   I think we’re supposed to believe that Roshi has wisely sensed that Goku and the others are more than enough to save the day, and yeah, he’s right, but it really makes him look like a heel.  Like, what else does Roshi have to do today?   His house is gone, so I’m pretty sure his schedule just cleared up for the next several days.
Tumblr media
There’s a cool scene where Bulma uses Oolong’s shape-shifting powers to frighten off Gurumes’ henchmen, only they end up running into Puar, who was doing the same thing for Yamcha.   See, he’s trying to secure the Dragon Balls for himself because he wants to get over his fear of girls, just like in the original version of this story, you see, so it’s very clever.
Tumblr media
Really, the only interesting parts of this movie are when the new characters do things, like when Pasta attacks Bulma, and Yamcha has no choice but to rush to her defense.   He battles Pasta for a while, and does okay until her mask comes off and he realizes he’s been fighting a girl the whole time.   Then he saves Bulma from a falling rock, and I’m bored again because he saved Bulma from different things back in Pilaf’s castle in the original story.
Tumblr media
Goku has a decent battle with Bongo, who flies around on some sort of hoverboard, so that’s pretty cool.    Finally they all get to Gurumes’ dining hall, and he suddenly turns into a giant monster.
Tumblr media
This is what I find really disappointing about this movie.  Gurumes looks like a pretty cool boss villan on the poster, but he spends most of the film in shadow, and when he finally does step out into the light, he’s become a hulkng, mindless brute.   And I’m fine with that development, but I wanted more of what Gurumes was before he succumbed to his mutation.   As it is, I can’t tell if Pasta and Bongo were manipulating him from the start, or if he was the true mastermind of this whole scheme, and he was too twisted and evil to realize it was a fool’s errand.  Well, we won’t get any answers now, because he forgot how to talk.
Goku tries to stop Gurumes with a Kamehameha, but it doesn’t even scratch the guy.  While that goes on, Bulma checks her radar and realizes that the other six Dragon Balls are inside Gurumes’ body.   So he ate them?   Was he that crazed with hunger, or was there actually some purpose to that?
Tumblr media
Bulma decides the only thing to do is toss the seventh Dragon Ball into Gurumes mouth, and summon the Dragon while they’re all together inside his tummy.   And that seems to stop him, so this is the first time Bulma beat the bad guy.   Good hustle, Bulma.
Tumblr media
Shenron emerges, and the whole castle is wrecked, so I would think Gurumes has been completely destroyed.  Bulma and Yamcha are too stunned to make their wish, so Pansy cries out that her people don’t want the Blood Rubies, and she only wants the land restored to the way it was before.   Shenron grants her request, and as the land transforms, all the rubies start floating out of the ground.
Tumblr media
Pasta is horrified to see this, because it means the complete ruination of her plans.   Also, I think Bongo might be dead?  Gurumes stepped on him, and he never moved much after that.  Goku hands her back the coin she paid him for his Dragon Ball, and I’m pretty sure that’s all the money she has left after everything that’s happened.  Bulma and Yamcha find each other, because that’s what happened in the original story, yadda yadda, and then...
Tumblr media
Okay, so King Gurumes is back to normal?   I guess?   How the hell did he survive Shenron coming out of his body?   His castle sure didn’t.  And why does he look like that?   Was he always that ugly, or is he still changing back?  Maybe he suffered some permanent damage from the curse?   Anyway, he’s still hungry, so Pansy hands him an apple, which he finds surprisingly delicious.   Pansy’s dad gives him shit about it, as if the apple had been the solution to his problem all along, if only he hadn’t been corrupted by his own greed.  Maybe that was the moral of the story, but I’m betting Gurumes has eaten apples before now.   I think he’s ony confused because the curse has finally been lifted.
But why was it lifted?  Is it because Shenron removed all the Blood Rubies?   Was that all Gurumes had to do?   Just chuck them in a dumpster?   Where did Shenron put all the Blood Rubies?  Did he throw them into the sun?   Did he bury them in some other king’s backyard?    This is how you get Curse of the Blood Rubies II, you know?
The movie ends with Goku running off on his new flying cloud, and thinking about how big and interesting the world it, yada yada.  It’s a decent movie with some breathtaking animation in places, but it’s not very satisfying when it borrows so much from other material that we’ve already seen before.   I really wanted to see more of Pansy, Gurumes, Bongo, and Pasta, but we couldn’t get that because we had to go over Yamcha’s motivation one more time, and remix the story of how Master Roshi gave Goku the Flying Nimbus.

Reading for Host 10-10-17 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Initial Reading
So, I did a reading on you and it ended up like this. I was trying to figure out what was up with you and Smoke and so I did my most accurate spread, “Message from the Universe” where the 4 cards tell insight into “Body, Heart, Mind, Spirit”. Though the positions and etc. maybe self-explanatory, they may not be as literal as you think, like body means the physical world not just the body you inhabit.
Body: Five of Swords: A battle if over, complete with a winner and a loser. Someone is walking away with all the prizes as well as confirmed enemies. Others are walking away with regrets, bad feelings, strong judgements, and probably with a taste for revenge. Although he may not know it yet, the victor has also lost something valuable, perhaps his honor, integrity, values, or friends. This situation is confused and that makes it hard to know what to do. If it’s too late and the battle happened already, make whatever restorations and move toward peace that you can. If it hasn’t happened yet, try to figure out a better way to solve conflict.
Heart: Six of Coins: It’s said that politics is about who gets what, when, and how. This card isn’t necessarily about politics, but it is about the haves and the have-nots, and the distribution of resources. Someone has what is needed and others have needs. The person holding all the coins is making decisions and judgements about who gets the help they requested. Some may leave satisfied while others may not. You have the ability to help someone you should. Furthermore, it would nice if you did it as kindly and generously as possible, helping the person retain their dignity.
Mind: Three of Swords: We all want the truth, but the truth, like words can cut deeply and can would cruelly. Truth and communication are the realm of the Swords and the mind, but this situation they are only the tools. It is the heart that experiences their effects. Whether or not you asked for this information you have it and you can’t unknow it. Unfortunately, this changes everything, and it will, I’m sorry to say, hurt for a while before it heals. Acknowledge and accept this truth; don’t try to deny your pain but resolve to heal and forgive or the swords will stay and poison your heart.
Spirit: Nine of Cups: In the old days, this was called the wish card. If it turned up in your reading it meant that your wish would come true. Today, we don’t go in so much for wishes being granted, preferring instead to earn our blessings through hard work. He truth probably lies in the middle ground: you’ve made some good choices and the results are very pleasing to you. For this moment, at least, you feel like life is pretty darn good. Count your blessings, practice gratitude, and share your good fortune with others.
So that’s awesome and dandy. At first, I was super confused on the why half the cards were the same as I did for a spread about me, then I remembered Angela when she played with her set got The Fool like 80 times so we think it’s just the deck type artist intent shit itself. (I also got the 5 of Swords and 6 of Coins in the same spot).
[Picture below shows cards from bottom to top]
Tumblr media
Droppers.
They usually are extra information that needed to be shared outside the spread. Usually there is like 2 or 3 if they happen at all. They’re called droppers cause they drop during shuffling while the cards are asked the question. The weird thing about these is that I had 5. 2 of them dropped when I was just thinking of you to focus in on the question. 3 dropped right before the spread was ready.
First Two [Dropped just thinking about you]
Nine of Swords [Reversed]: ah, the dreaded thought monsters that eat away at the night, stealing sweet and badly needed sleep. Whether these thoughts keep you from falling asleep or wake you up at 2 a.m. all they do is consume with no beneficial return. The more they eat, the stronger they get… and the weaker you feel. They conflate every regret, every mistake, and every slight until the smallest act or thoughtless word threatens to consume you. Isolation, Long term insomnia, over reliance on sleeping aids.
Eight of Cups [Revered]: Sometimes things are pretty good. Everything seems just fine except for this deep but persistent urge to move on. There is nothing you can put your finger on as the reason why you want to go; you just do. This makes it hard to rationalize or talk to others about. It may look like you are throwing away a perfectly good like, job, or relationship or opportunity. But your heart knows it is no longer for you. Settling for Second best, resentment, running away because of fear.
Second Three [Dropped before I dealt the message from universe spread for the extra needed to know info].
Judgement [Reversed]: Judgement isn’t about being judged per say, or at least being judged by others. It is about being connected not just to your own inner voice but also to whatever kind of power or being or idea that is more than yourself. Judgment is frequently defined as “The Call”, the meaning you receive clarity about some larger task or joy or action your soul wants you to take. “Why am I ignoring what I know I should be doing? Am I attributing “the call” to something that really isn’t a call, in order to justify what I want to do?
Five of Cups: This card looks like loss, but it is more about the emotional reaction to loss. There is the mourning of what is gone and isolation, the natural desire for privacy with one’s grief. Two upright cups show that something still remains, something that can comfort and sustain when the time is right. Finally, there is the path back to community, connection, and what we may think of as “normal” everyday life. Take the time to process your feelings because that is the only way to return to “normal” life, but know that normal life will be different now.
Nine of Wands: Be prepared, be vigilant. Experience has shown that there is, in this situation, trouble brewing. Very likely this is some sort of ongoing battle or repeating issue or cycle, perhaps on the job, within a social group, or in a relationship. There is weariness in this card, as if you are tired of fighting the same fight over and over again. Unfortunately, unless something changes, it is a case of “Same stuff, different day”. Be ready to do battle… yet again. Or find a way to put a stop to that cycle that allows these struggles to continue.

Analysis
Okay so like I said before, I was initially thinking this was a dud spread until I got to the droppers. It was the first card that dropped that called out sleeping habits that made me buy into this spread a little more and felt inclined to finish the other cards. The main spread says that you’re in a relatively good place and you just need to finally act/make a decision about all of this. Nothing new there I guess.
The droppers all talk about hesitation and processing feelings. But the Five of Cups indicates I think that you’re more towards the end of processing (which has also shown via chats) and just reminds you things will be different no matter how the proceeding events unfold. The Nine of Wands being the final dropper and final card to reveal itself talking about battle yet again means that the time is close to get ready to tackle all if this. This mimics what the Five of Swords was saying in the body part of the main spread, except further confirms that the chance has not passed.
Further insight into my Tarot world. What’s interesting about this particular set of cards is that you touched upon every single kind of card there is. The Minor Arcana (the cards that are “Number of ______”) you hit every single suit [Wands, Cups, Swords, Coins] and element [Fire, Water, Air, Earth] which is very rare for me to have appear in any reading for anyone. You also got an Major Arcana card [the stereotypical ones like Lovers, Death, etc., Your case Judgement]. The fact that these cards were so willing to respond and give extra insight into the question about you and your world with Smoke might lead to a little more legitimacy if you are even buying into this at all.

THE LAST OF US PART II SPOILER REVIEW
The Last of Us 2 is, mechanically, more of a refinement then a reinvention, but the story is running the opposite goal of turning the themes of the first game on it’s head. Despite the grim visuals, setting and tone the first game is ultimately a story about love and redemption. The second game twists this on it’s head with the core relationship this time being a hateful one. Redemption is still core but with the heightened violence and cynical, sinister impulses driving the main characters it becomes a much harder conceit. Can the irredeemable still find peace? It’s a disturbing premise without as many stories to use as a blueprint. Threading this needle to a satisfying conclusion would require a steady hand. Naughty Dog took on a much more difficult concept when writing this story and while I feel they mostly stuck the landing, some of that challenge shows in the final game.
But before we get started on the execution of the story I just want to acknowledge how disagreeable of a premise this would be to anyone that loved that first game. I didn’t understand the enraged reaction but I really should have. The Last of Us is often grim and heartbreaking but it’s ultimately a crowdpleaser that leans hard on genre conventions with a few clever twists. The thing about tropes and conventions is that they become that because they stay satisfying to watch in a way that’s timeless.
This game is much more eager to make more of it’s own moves. Some of the more violent impulses of the human mind that we only saw flashes of in the first to their logical conclusion. Characters are built up and fleshed out only to die at inopportune and unsatisfying times. If The Last of Us was a story about how the bonds we form with others can carry us through the dark, tragic world, The Last of Us 2 explores what would happen if that light disappeared and how we stop ourselves from being consumed by the void twe’re left with. What I’m saying is that they didn’t write a safe follow up to The Last of Us despite how easy that would really be. They wrote a story about the consequences of that game. The exact type of consequences that Joel and Ellie agreed to look the other way on in the first game’s acclaimed final scene.
But you can’t run away forever. I tend to cringe when games like The Last of Us are praised with terms like “adult” and “mature” strictly because of it’s aesthetic but I really don’t know another way to describe this shift in tone and messaging. Strictly talking from the evolution of the first game to the second, it’s like being hit with same doses of reality that come with adulthood. It’s a nice “next step” for Ellie’s journey as she turns 19 and a lot of the rocks that made up her life are taken away from her.
There will be spoilers from here on out, as a heads up. In the opening hours of the game, Joel is killed and he doesn’t get the blaze of glory one might expect of characters from his type. It is unceremonious, random, and ugly. He is made to look weak and pitiful. The player is forced to watch it unfold from Ellie’s perspective. The game starts by offing one of the franchises’s pillars in a surprising way that leaves everyone uncertain of what happens next, and I couldn’t have thought of a better way to be put in Ellie’s shoes for this adventure. Joel’s death got a genuine reaction from me that none of the games in the first game did, and it synced my feelings with Ellie’s as she charged blindly and impatiently into Seattle to chase a group she knows nothing about and a individual she knows nothing about the whereabouts of. This blind rage drives the story for the first half of the campaign and instead of things lining up for Ellie it’s full of false starts, dead ends and violence that rarely turns out to be necessary. If Joel’s death doesn’t lose players then this part serves to drive more of them away. I personally don’t mind a character transforming into something they’re not as long as it’s handled believably though and as far gone as Ellie is by the end of this first half it’s hard not to see how she got there. Her mind deteriorates as the violence she feels compelled to commit takes more and more of a toll on her with Ashley Johnson’s delivery becoming more withdrawn and stoic as the game goes on. The game has a unique sense of dread running through it as Ellie’s quest continues to go more and more off the rails and more bodies pile up. In a penultimate level Ellie starts to prioritize violence over the safety of her friends with a rationale that brings to mind addiction, and things almost never end well for those kinds of characters. The tone is prevented from getting too bleak through flashbacks to her relationship with Joel, showing how much of a positive he continued to be in her life despite everything. It feels a little cheap for the game to have it’s cake and eat it too in regards to Joel but it ends up paying off so well it’s hard to be angry. The game falls back into the scavenge - fight - scavenge cycle from the first game but with some refinements to both. The game is a little bit more open ended and systemic in most ways, with the exploration sequences having more optional content and the combat arenas being built with a lot more depth, angles to attack from and ways to sneak away and lose your enemies. Even more valuable than any collectible is the optional conversations you can find by taking a look around. AI is more aggressive and new enemy types like dogs and s+Seraphites keep Ellie on her toes by constantly tracking her position. Movement is more important than ever and these jungle gyms the designers built facilitate it perfectly. Being forced to engage with the level design more needed more complex and memorable arenas to compensate and thankfully Naughty Dog rose to this challenge. The arenas in this game stick out in my memory a lot more than the corridors of the first. It can’t escape some old habits though. The AI is still a little too robotic and easy to trick, something that ends up undercutting this game’s ambition to make every enemy a more believable person. Sometimes the game will go long stretches without anything interesting to do only to turn around and lay the combat encounters on too heavily. It’s a balancing act that this game can’t figure out. Some more variety in terms of content would have helped with this a lot. The game tries with a new set of puzzles based around rope physics. A few of these are pretty clever which makes them better than the ladder and wood puzzles from the previous game but they didn’t dig into it enough.
Just as the other shoe drops Ellie the game switches perspectives and has us play as Abby, the daughter of the surgeon Joel slaughtered in the first game. This is immediately a solid way to reinforce the games themes by forcing us to understand the game’s bad guy and how she had similar motivations to Ellie. With Abby’s revenge completed though we’re forced to confront how hollow she feels after the fact and that Ellie doesn’t have any catharsis waiting for her at the end of this tunnel. Abby’s half boils down to realizing the cycle is a hollow exercise and pushing herself to escape it. It’s not clearly directly connected to Ellie’s quest aside from the beginning and the end but thematically they’re very much two sides of the same coin. It’s a quest that’s a bit lighter and a little more noble and the tone shifts in turn. Naughty Dog’s famous set-pieces were largely absent from the more grounded first half and make a return here. More fantastic settings than even the first game are employed and visually they’re more spectacular than ever. Abby and Lev’s trip over the sky bridge is bound to stick with me just for it’s imaginative setting and jaw dropping view. The combat encounters get a lot more vertical and complex. Abby trades out Ellie’s stealth oriented play-style to one more reminiscent of Joel in the first game with abilities geared toward putting her on the offensive more often. It’s a little strange at first but being able to take more risks in this system ends up being a lot of fun.
Unfortunately the laser focused writing of the first half takes a hit. Abby’s more invested in her extended cast then Ellie is and not all of these characters are given the time needed to really shine. This is where the cracks of condensing the game into 3 days really start to show. The most believable relationships in the series are forged over a year or more with great detail and implications of what happens on and off the camera. Abby and Lev’s comradely is charming but it feels undercooked on the whole compared to the much richer relationships from the first game, the DLC or even other parts of this one. Lev as a whole is a positive addition to the universe but his story leaves a lot to be desired. In both story and gameplay he flanks Abby from the shadows, so quiet that you forget he’s there until he makes a precision shot with his bow to turn the tide of tense encounters. He is awkward and withdrawn displays a lot of courage in  trying to escape his faction. Courage that inspires Abby to do the same and forges a bond. But that’s part of the problem. Lev is only really there as an accessory to Abby’s story. His story tries to continue Naughty Dog’s more progressive slant by delving into some of the difficult circumstances that come with being transgender but this narrative is ultimately very one note and conveyed through exposition and developments off-screen over any of the craft that went into selling us on Ellie in the original games. In many ways it feels like cheap tokenism and I hate to say that about a character written and portrayed with such earnestness. Abby’s story ends up coming up a little short compared to Ellie’s on the whole. Contrivance puts the overall larger cast in positions to be killed off. Spectacular set-pieces start to happen with very loose justification that doesn’t suit this game’s world. It’s definitely  the more fun half of the game but I would rather have had a little more consistency over some of these elements. There’s a lot to like here but nothing that got under my skin as thoroughly as watching Ellie’s mental state deteriorate in the first half. So it’s a bit of a relief when we switch back to her in the last stretch, long after Abby lets her go and gives her a chance to live her life. Ellie is living in a dream scenario, on a quiet farm with her girlfriend Dinah and her kid. It’s a jarring, frustrating sequence that turns satisfying when quickly calls out for the farce it is. Abby was hollow after completing her mission but Ellie is about as well off after she gives up and lets go, illustrating that there was no easy answer for getting over her hatred and trauma. Seeking out Abby and finding her beaten so thoroughly by the world was one of my favorite moments in the game. One of the game’s biggest symbols of strength was reduced to a frail, fragile figure without Ellie’s input. There’s no honor in killing her now but Ellie doesn’t know what else to do with herself and tries anyway. The fight stretches a little too long and gets a little too graphic, but the ending works. Joel flashes into her mind and she lets Abby go, realizing all at once what he truly wanted for her and how he was able to do what he did to protect her. She had to alienate or inadvertently cause the deaths of most of the people in her life to get here, though and the ending leaves her on that tragic note. The game is about love in the same way the first game was, and how easy it is to justify hate in it’s name. It’s an interesting premise but probably not the best fit for an action game where the core loop is combat driven.Crafting a story about the destructive consequences indulging in violence leaves feels a little bit out of lockstep with itself when indulging in violence is so satisfying as a gameplay loop. The story is a precautionary tale about the temptation of violence but in the gameplay violence is directly trying to be cathartic. I think that the developers were riding on some kind of dramatic irony with that choice, but it’s so heavy handed it comes off as patronizing at times.
Storytelling or thematic ambitions don’t work in this medium without mechanical ambitions to go alongside them but Naughty Dog remains hesitant to push themselves here. Even the wheels start to fall off of the story just because of how many moving parts it’s trying to juggle. The first game was a little less mature and a little less ambitious than this one, but it was a little more consistent for it. I think I prefer this game though, warts and all.

Pure Fitness center Buys LA Fitness.
Jon-Erik Kawamoto, CSCS, CEP, is a Personal Instructor, Strength Coach as well as Physical fitness Author out of St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. When Rocky lost his powers after Rito Revolto's strike on Angel Grove, he obtained new powers with the Ape Power Coin offered to him by Ninjor on the Rangers' journey to the Temple of Power. A big part of this book was fairly irrelevant-I'm already a gym-goer that loves her squats, so I didn't require the information clarifying why I ought to function out/encouraging me to lift. Pfeffer's most current book, qualified Power: Why Some Individuals Have It-- As well as Others Do not was released in 2010 by Harper Company. Every fantastic speaker understands words have the power to tempt, persuade as well as motivate people right into a certain course of action. Power plants are all adjoined in a grid that provides exactly the amount of power demanded moment by minute. Since power exists, it has actually always wanted to broaden its power, also if it is at the cost of the lives of individuals, both friendly and foreign. Your individual instructor collaborates with the Nautilus workout tools in order to help you satisfy your physical fitness goals. Often, when the lightbulb requires replacing, you have to ride up and down in the dark, which is when my thoughts go back to that distressing haunted lift scene from The Eye. The purpose of the outside all-weather staircase lift is to assist the impaired in accessing outside steps while actioning in and out of their residences. Nevertheless, some sceptics have articulated worries over the safety of utilizing workout tools without garments on. Neil Newberry, assistant principal fire police officer, will contact lift owners to notify them of the new policy. There is certainly more to the sensation compared to simply using fitness instructors outside the fitness center. These challenges to top-down power are coming alive again today not just in times of presidential elections (where they are typically missed by the prospects) yet additionally in the numerous social activities of our age. Along with fitness center membership, some health clubs provide classes and also programs especially for teenagers so teenagers could do yoga, hip jump aerobics, or play dodgeball with their peers. Most of us may learn to push the obstacle farther off, and also to live in perfect comfort on a lot greater degrees of power.

The best iPhone VR apps and games to check out in 2018
You want the best iPhone VR apps and games? Well, there’s a whole App Store for that, even Apple hasn’t made it’s own iPhone VR headset equivalent to the Google Daydream View or Samsung Gear VR.
Getting yourself into the exciting world of iPhone virtual reality is easy. All you need is anything from the iPhone X all the way to the iPhone SE… basically any iPhone running iOS 11. The necessary motion sensors, processing power and right screen resolution are right inside the phone.
Oh, and you’ll need a headset. But don’t worry, those are relatively cheap.
Google Cardboard headsets can be found for free with some promotions, but ‘Cardboard’ is the system that can be used for top apps from the Apple App Store – you’ll want to download the dedicated Cardboard app for that.
There are multiple headsets that you can buy for showing off the iPhone’s VR capabilities, with straps to keep it more in place – the Zeiss VR ONE headset is a good place to begin – and all you need to do is start a VR-enabled app, slot the phone in, pop on some headphones (Bluetooth works best) and get into a virtual world.
Each headset has lenses and a mechanism to secure your phone, so that when you move your head in the real world, you can look around in the virtual one.
There’s a vast selection of VR-ready apps on the App Store and we’ve narrowed it down to some of the top apps and games that shouldn’t be missed – and while it’s not on the list, you should certainly try out Sisters, as it’s one of the scariest options out there…
(Update: If you’ve heard about Apple’s new ARKit, it’s the company’s own platform to let developers put virtual objects over the real world images, like hiking trails or relevant information on what you’re looking at.
While it launched alongside iOS 11 you don’t need to worry about it right now, although it looks really cool. We know you’re interested in virtual reality, so keep reading to see the best options.)
Watch the video above to see our overview of the iPhone X
Price: Free
One of the more graphically impressive games on this list, GermBuster is an arcadey first-person shooter in which you destroy pesky germs by shooting them with your bubble pistol.
The gameplay is simple and it won’t take very long for even the most novice of game players to feel right at home. There’s something special about ridding germs from existence that’s surprisingly fun and this game captures that. We suppose the only thing missing is a flamethrower to destroy them with, instead of the rather pedestrian bubble shooter.
Price: Free
There’s nothing quite like a roller coaster in virtual reality. For someone like me, who hates roller coasters in real life, getting to experience the ups and downs of one in VR is quite the escape.
With a headset attached, you’ll probably find yourself laughing and squealing the time away, much like you would on a normal roller coaster.
VR Roller Coaster is one of the de facto apps to download if you just bought a Google Cardboard. It’s fun, a little bit scary and completely sells you on the power of VR.
Be careful: you’ll find a ton of mimic apps like this one, but this is definitely one of the better ones on iOS.
Price: Free
Despite originally costing a little bit of money, Zombie Shooter VR is now free – a sure sign the competition is heating up. The name gives the game away really, it’s all about shooting zombies – you guessed it – in VR.
Look-to-shoot controls make it immersive in its simplicity, allowing you to focus on the myriad post-apocalyptic tunnels you can explore on the hunt for the undead.
Price: Free
You know what would make Discovery’s trove of content even better? Seeing it VR. Well, today’s your lucky day.
You can look around in immersive 360-degrees from within acclaimed television specials like Shark Week and Mythbusters through the lens of your Google Cardboard headset for the easy price of free.
High-quality 360-degree video is somewhat of a rarity in the virtual reality space, so having a dedicated channel for nothing but that is something great to have in your library.
Price: Free
You didn’t think we’d stop at having just one roller coaster simulator on this list, did you? The combo of virtual reality and roller coasters is a match made in technology heaven.
Roller Coaster VR differs from our first recommendation in that this one takes you to exotic locations on a tropical island. So not only will you be shaken up,  you’ll also be mildly stirred by the beauty of nature at the same time.
Price: Free
It doesn’t get much more perfect than this. YouTube is an app you probably already have and is free to download if you don’t. Now that it has embraced 360-degree videos the amount of VR content is growing by the day.
Inside a YouTube 360-degree video you can look around as if you were really there. Thanks to more 360-degree cameras hitting the market, like the Samsung Gear 360, Moto 360 Camera Mod for the Moto Z2 Force and the Essential Phone to name a few, both professionals and amateurs alike are uploading footage. This is a great place to dip your virtual toes into the excitingly immersive digital world of VR.
Price: Free
Ever wondered what it would feel like to be shrunk down small enough to enter the human body? If you’ve seen the Inner Space movie you’ll probably have ideas of what that’s like but InCell VR shatters them brilliantly.
This simple game has a basic story about protecting a human at the cellular level but in reality, or virtual reality rather, you’re playing a racing game where you dodge or collect objects. It’s fun, addictive and jaw dropping in its size and beautiful colours. Plus you can pretend you’re doing good, not just goofing off in a VR headset.
Price: Free
And now, for something completely different.
The New York Times’ virtual reality app is a new, experimental branch of its award-winning coverage. In this video-focused app, the publication has bottled up deep dives and investigative journalism that takes you across the world.
Downloading this app gives you access to plenty of 360-videos that will satisfy the curious viewer who’s looking to learn something new and interesting.
Price: Free
Within (formerly known as Vrse) is like a platform within virtual reality. Except in this case a lot of the content created is produced by Within, making it a bit more like Netflix with its original programming, only in VR.
Everything is laid out nicely and keeps content varied from investigative journalism videos in VR to immersive music videos.
One excellent collaboration features Michael Fassbender and Kristen Wiig in a film called Take Flight, which was created with support from The New York Times. This is a growing platform that’s not to be missed.
Price: Free
While playing soccer/football in VR seems like a pretty involved thing, but thankfully, Final Kick VR is as simple as lining up your kick by aiming your head.
The app is filled with different modes and challenges, all of which invite you to test your reflexes to best a tough goalie, or hit tricky moving targets with a curved kick.
As is the beauty of the sport, Final Kick VR is fun and simple to dig into, but difficult to master.
Price: Free
If you’re a lover of learning about the inner-workings of the human mind, you’ll be happy to know that there’s just the game for you.
It’s called InMind 2 VR and in this VR-ready title, you’ll be traversing through the mind, enjoying some lite arcade shooter elements to ensure that the flow of your body’s essential hormones and enzymes get where they need to be.
Sound zany? That’s because it is. But if you have an iPhone, this game and its free prequel are definitely worth playing.
Price: $0.99 (£0.79, AU$1.49)
Lamper returns in this sequel that offers a polished and entertaining VR experience. Control Lamper the firefly as you navigate stunning worlds using fireballs and power-ups to get by enemies.
Flight is controlled with simple head movements, making enemy targeting and object evasion a doddle. Collect enough coins and you’ll kick into high speed flight with Rainbow mode. Lamper VR: Firefly Rescue both takes you back to classic gaming while pulling you into the future of VR all at once.
Price: $0.99 (£0.99, AU$1.99)
Take control of a spacecraft, with guns, and unleash on enemy space fighters. It’s a sci-fi dream come true.
Since space is the ultimate 360 experience End Space VR takes advantage of the virtual reality world perfectly, allowing you to look and go in all directions. Thanks to top graphics and 3D immersive audio you’ll be forgiven for getting totally lost in this one. Upgrade your ships and weapons to take on the ever more difficult waves of enemies. Rinse and repeat.
Price: Free
There’s nothing like a little outdoor exploration. But then again, there’s nothing like exploring the outdoors from within your fancy VR headset. That’s exactly what you’ll do while playing Trail World VR, a fun and easy exploration game available now for Google Cardboard on iOS.
Trail World VR is a low-intensity experience, meaning there won’t be any jump-scares or unwanted surprises for those who are looking for a relaxing time in a virtual world. It’s just a fun trail filled with surprises.
Price: Free
This one would have made it onto the list for the name alone. It’s just a bonus that it’s a great game and it’s free.
In Romans From Mars 360 you’re a Roman soldier fighting off an invading alien army using arrows and elemental powers of fire, ice, lightning and more. Weapon upgrades and enemy waves make this highly addictive. The fact it’s Google Cardboard compatible just makes it even more accessible.
Price: Free
This fighter jet shooter was created primarily as a normal game and has had VR support added. This is a good thing, as the original Fractal Combat X was graphically stunning and the gameplay was fast-paced and addictive. Making it VR-friendly just adds to the awesome.
New missions are added daily and MFi gaming controllers are supported, as are Google Cardboard-style VR visors. While the game is free be warned there are in-app purchases to be had. That said, any purchase will disable ads so it could be worth it.
Price: Free
Google Street View already has nearly the entire planet photographed in 360-degree photos. What better app to adapt for virtual reality?
Strap on your VR headset and you can go anywhere in the world and look around as if you were really there. Imagine classrooms in the future taking children all over the planet to explore, rather than just seeing sites in a textbook. Very exciting stuff indeed, and of course it’s all free.
Price: Free
The premise for this VR game couldn’t be any simpler: acting as the spaceship, tilt your head to maneuver through obstacles that stand in your way.
There’s not a whole lot to this title, but that’s part of its appeal. This is a solid game that people who love striving for a new high score will sink their teeth into. File this one under “easy to start, difficult and fun to master”.

Best iPhone Action Games To Pass Time
Sometimes you just want to play cool iPhone action games.
These are games that are keeping your reflexes while fighting the evil forces.
When you play one of these top free action games, you can be whatever you want. Even a hero!
Still, for the action game apps to be considered as really good, you need to feel the console-quality graphics and also the controls. Take a look at the best action game list.
Implosion: Never Lose Hope
Fight for humanity’s future in Rayark’s sci-fi hack-and-slasher Implosion: Never Lose Hope. Piloting an agile Warmech, players do battle against the alien XADA, engaging in intense melee combat and gunplay.
Implosion’s slick graphics, responsive controls and adrenaline-pumping combat are all wonderfully satisfying, evoking the spirit of console greats in a remarkably nimble mobile title.
Super Mario Run
Mario’s mobile debut is an endless running delight. Super Mario Run is a delightfully colorful game with precise controls that give it the feel of a true Mario experience. Nintendo also offers a lot of replayability in Super Mario Run, with hidden coins on each of the 24 courses and hidden characters you can unlock.
The standard World Tour mode is complemented by the multiplayer Toad Rally and Kingdom Builder, in which you can decorate your very own Mushroom Kingdom.
Unkilled
Blast away at the zombie hordes overrunning New York City in Unkilled, Madfinger’s latest zombie hunting shooter. As a soldier of Wolfpack, it’s up to you to take down undead and human threats as you get to the bottom of the outbreak. The game features 300 story missions and a variety of weapons and enemies to encounter and unlock across the campaign.
In addition to story mode, the game also includes multiplayer where you shoot it out against other human players, and an asynchronous multiplayer mode where you and your opponent design custom zombie hordes and unleash them on each other.
Vector 2
Parkour sidescroller Vector 2 drops the Mirror’s Edge-esque near future stylings for a more solidly science fiction feel. Vector 2 sees players race through a high-tech research installation, but now, instead of being chased by guards and enemies, players must dodge traps, mines, guns and energy barriers through the skillful use of a variety of parkour moves.
Procedurally generated levels make gameplay more about reaction and reading the flow of the map, rather than memorizing each level’s layout, adding a lot of replayability.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Explore the crime-ridden cities of San Andreas in the mobile port of Rockstar Games’ open world shooting classic. Players step into the shoes of Carl Johnson, a man framed for murder and forced into an odyssey through the underworld of the cities of Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas.
Along the way, you’ll engage in a lot of crazy driving, gunplay, and open world exploration. The mobile port remaps things to a virtual buttons scheme, but there’s support for physical controllers as well.
Lost in Harmony
Another one of these iPhone action games is a fast-paced blend of obstacle running and rhythm gaming. Lost in Harmony has players guiding friends Kaito and Aya through a series of dream-like obstacle courses that mirror their relationship as Aya deals with illness.
Players slide left and right across lanes to gather stardust and avoid obstacles, while tapping the screen to score points, all timed to the rhythm of the game’s soundtrack.
In addition to the game’s built-in story levels, users can take advantage of a built-in level designer, allowing you to build your own custom levels keyed to a track of your choosing, which you can share to other players worldwide.
Don’t Starve
An action-survival game that’s made its way over to iOS, Don’t Starve challenges you to…well…not starve. Stranded in the wilderness and armed only with your wits and what you can gather and craft, Don’t Starve owes much to games like Minecraft, but refines it all and combines it with a creepy aesthetic.
Starting with next to nothing, you’ll soon be carving out a home for yourself in the wilderness while evading wild animals and other stranger threats.
Alto’s Adventure
A relaxing infinite runner in the vein of Canabalt, Velocity and Ski Free, Alto’s Adventure has you chasing down escaped llamas by snowboarding through the mountainside. Along the way, you have to avoid perils like rocks, fires, and chasms, while picking up coins and scoring points for tricks.
While it’s standard infinite runner fare, the game’s clean, simple design and low stress presentation that makes it so endearing and almost oxymoronic: a relaxing action game.
Transistor
Supergiant Games returns to prove that Bastion wasn’t just a one-off success with its latest game: Transistor. Dive into an Art Deco cyberpunk metropolis gone mad as you untangle the mystery of a girl named Red, her sword the Transistor, and the strange cataclysm that has befallen the two of them.
Players can configure the Transistor with an incredible variety of combat functions, providing diverse ways to play. The game mixes classic top-down beat ’em up gameplay with a “planning mode” that allows you to plot out a set of moves that Red executes once you unpause the game.
RunGunJumpGun
Gambitious’s RunGunJumpGun is a simple but fiendishly difficult post-apocaliptic science fiction platformer. RunGunJumpGun has only two controls: one button fires your weapon forward, and the other fires it downward, sending your avatar flying in a blast of energy.
Players must carefully navigate trap-filled platformer mazes while dodging energy blasts and enemies, all while trying to collect as many “atomiks” as possible in each level. Simple-to-learn but hard-to-master gameplay and fiendish level design make RunGunJumpGun an entertaining addition to for platformer fans.
Crashlands
The latest product from wacky mobile game developer ButterScotch Shenanigans, Crashlands is perhaps best described as a friendlier and funnier take on crafting action RPGs like Don’t Starve. As the stranded galactic trucker Flux Dabes, you’ve got to piece together parts to fix your crashed ship, and that’ll require some crafting.
And dodging monsters. And dealing with the locals. Featuring some neat, pattern-based action RPG combat, tons of crafting, base construction, pets and exploration, Crashlands has a ton of content for you to blast through.
Marvel: Contest of Champions
Marvel: Contest of Champions allows you to unleash your inner comic geek and collect and battle your favorite Marvel Comics superheroes and villains in a simplified touch-screen brawler. Swipe and tap controls make for a responsive 1-v-1 fighting game battler, with players needing to keep a good rhythm and a combination of basic attacks and super moves to win.
Players can engage in a lengthy campaign mode or engage in multiplayer battles against others, with your play time limited by a stamina system. Users can unlock heroes by completing in-game quests, winning matches or in-app purchases.
Pinout
This is not your parents’ pinball machine. Instead of racking up points, PinOut wants you to go the distance, trying to advance the ball further and further through a Tron-like landscape as the clock ticks down. You can pick up pellets that add precious time and a few handy power-ups can also keep your ball in play.
PinOut also makes great use of your iPhone’s touch interface, letting you control different flippers by which side of the screen you press. You can download the game for free, but a $2.99 purchase lets you restart at the last checkpoint you’ve cleared instead of starting from the beginning.
Injustice: Gods Among Us
A mobile version of the hit console fighting game, Injustice: Gods Among Us lets players take control of DC Comics’ most iconic superheroes as they battle it out in a dark, alternate universe. With its fusion of fighting and collectible card-game mechanics, Injustice has you forming teams of three superheroes pitted against rival teams of heroes and villains.
Tap-and-swipe touch-screen battles ensue as your heroes duke it out, with the tempo broken up by substitutions and special abilities. As you advance, you can use earned credits to unlock new hero cards or upgrade your existing roster of heroes and villains.
Badland
Badland is a beautiful physics platformer with one-touch controls. Usually, it’s game over as soon as you hit anything in a standard platformer game, but that’s not the case here. In Badland, you control this odd little creature trying to flap its way through a treacherous forest.
Debris falls in your path, and odd machinery peaks through the brush and occasionally knocks you around, but when you throw in the multiple power ups available throughout the game things get really interesting.
You can play local multiplayer and try to nudge opponents off the edge of the screen, which moves gradually forward as you progress. The art style is certainly dark, but a little whimsical too.
Dumb Ways to Die
In Dumb Ways to Die, players have to successfully get through a gauntlet of simple mini-games for as long as possible, though they become progressively more difficult the longer you go. These can range from shooing piranhas away from your crotch, swatting bugs, and holding on to balloons so you don’t dive onto the train tracks.
The art style fantastically morbid – cute little characters are constantly getting maimed in new and exciting ways. As you play, you unlock more of them for your collection.
Fruit Ninja
There’s an indescribable sense of satisfaction from slicing open juicy fruit with ninja-like precision – a satisfaction that has stood the test of time and remains highly accessible. Halfbrick has remained extremely diligent in keeping their original fruit-slicing game up-to-date with new content.
Yes, in-app purchases have been implemented for certain power ups, but the starfruit you earn through normal gameplay can be also used to buy these bomb deflectors, bonus fruit, and new blades.
Icycle
At its core, Icycle is a simple platform game with a series of unlockables earned by gathering currency scattered throughout each stage. You earn up to four stars depending on how much of that currency you collect, how many times you die, and meeting other specific challenge goals for each stage.
That’s all pretty standard. What makes Icycle truly amazing is its absolutely bizarre premise and art style. With only an umbrella and a miniature bicycle, players must guide the hapless (and nude) Denis through a frozen nightmare in order to find a lost love.
Infinity Blade 3
Infinity Blade 3 follows closely in the footsteps of its predecessors: players face off against imposing opponents in fantastic one-on-one duels in a lush fantasy world. Swipes, taps, and gestures translate to slashes, thrusts, dodges, and supernatural abilities.
As players meander from encounter to encounter, they uncover more and more of an evolving storyline that spans back into the previous games.
Into the Dead
If you ever needed a good reason to run, it’s zombies. Into the Dead currently ranks among the top endless runners out there right now. Players adopt a first-person perspective of someone dodging the undead while running at breakneck speeds through fields, forests, and even more treacherous terrain.
Along the way you’ll occasionally have a firearm or a canine companion to help you out, but ultimately, the zombies always get too thick, and drag you kicking and screaming to an untimely end.
Osmos
At first blush, Osmos might seem a little too slow and ponderous to be called an “action” game, but its unique physics gameplay demands a lot of intuition. Players control a small cell that drifts through organic soup, absorbing other, smaller cells.
The catch is that propelling yourself in a given direction ejects mass in the process. Also, if you make contact with larger cells, they’ll absorb you instead. Things get particularly interesting when you try your hand at multiplayer mode.
Spaceteam
Spaceteam is a decidedly unique local multiplayer game. Players gather together with their various iOS devices and connect over either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. They’re then presented with ridiculously-labeled spaceship consoles, replete with all manner of sliders, knobs, switches, and buttons.
Each player then has a message flashing telling them which control needs to be tweaked in order to save their ship from exploding. The thing is, that control could be on anybody’s device, so what ends up happening is everybody starts barking ludicrous orders at one another with straight-faced urgency.
Super Hexagon
Super Hexagon is an insanely difficult, abstract twitch game where players have to navigate through a maze that’s continually collapsing in on a central shape. The pulsing rhythm and constant spinning of the play area make Super Hexagon really, really hard, plus the fast-paced soundtrack isn’t likely to calm your nerves.
There are three difficulties to start, and as you beat each stage, a new version of the level unlocks that has the same track go at what feels like twice the regular speed. It doesn’t take long before things get a little ridiculous.
Tiny Wings
Tiny Wings remains one of the most charming iPhone action games on mobile. With simple one-touch controls, players dive bomb a hapless little bird into gulleys so that he may slingshot out the opposing ridge and fling him further into the skies than his own little wings could possibly allow.
Players are racing against the clock, trying get as far as possible before daylight runs out – keep up a good pace, and you can out-fly the sun.
Metal Gear Solid Touch
When Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was released on the PS3 last year it was as if Hideo Kojima wanted to give something back to the perennially loyal MGS fan base. It was a gift-wrapped present of epic storylines, surprise cameos and behemoth, film-like cutscenes that quickly placed it for many as a favourite in the series.
Car Jack Streets
It’s hard to look at screenshots of Car Jack Streets (CJS) and not draw comparisons with the original Grand Theft Auto title. Thankfully, rather than just selling CJS as ‘GTA for the iPhone’, developer TAG has incorporated a real-time game mechanic that does a fine job of propelling CJS far enough away from the unrelenting GTA gravity well and sets it apart as one of the most individual titles for Apple’s handheld to date.
Zenonia 5
Long ago, a great war was fought to restore peace and harmony to mankind. But as the years passed, greed and selfishness corrupted the hearts of man. The elite rich began to exploit the poor and great darkness came over the kingdom.
Immerse yourself once again in the best action RPG for mobile. Defeat impossible bosses and unravel the mysteries in stunning HD!
Wipeout
It is a crazy 3D Physics based game. However, you don’t need to implement tough formula or even consult your Old books but still, this Game needs a very intelligent mind.
In Wipeout, your player is tasked for weaving your character through three platform-based obstacle courses under a certain time limit. You need to go ahead very wisely. Each and every course is having weird, rubber-y machines which are meant to knock you off.

Modern Combat 5
Gameloft’s Modern Combat 5: Blackout is a realistic version in the first person shooter iOS series. Although it may have striking similarities to Call of Duty, it vastly contains novel ideas that can contribute great entertainment to the users.
This installment of Modern Combat has splendid graphics, a thrilling plot along with multiplayer mode. Designed with a new class system that comes with highly customizable options, the Modern Combat 5 is one of the best first-person shooter iPhone action games.
Zombieville USA 2
Zombieville USA 2 is a shooter game containing 2-D level graphics and a good share of animated blood that’s vivid, but not violent. You have to combat hordes of zombies to terminate them using an astounding armory at your disposal. Due to this reason it is better if you don’t allow children at your house to play this game.
You can buy most of the weapons with the in-game cash as you advance. But, there is no option within the app to buy cash within the game in exchange for the real money. It is integrated with the game center to share your high scores.
Brothers in Arms 3: Sons of War
Of the various settings for shooting genre video games, the World War II is always a popular one. With a simple premise set during the 1940s, Brothers in Arms 3: Sons of War involves shooting, stabbing and exploding your way against large numbers of Nazis and destroying the Axis powers.
You will find many familiar settings and characters in the game with top-notch graphics. Brothers in Arms 3 is an entertaining game which will take you to the times of World War II.
BattleLore: Command
BattleLore: Command by Fantasy Flight Games is a turn-based strategy game. The game is staged upon a battlefield laid out in grid structure. The turns are divided into three parts with which you need to accomplish your objectives. Taking turns you must tactically assemble troops, plan their movements, align them into battle positions and finally attack.
You must either destroy the rival force or meet the map’s objective to win. If you don’t achieve any one of the above-mentioned tasks, then the victory is your enemy’s.
Infinity Field
Infinity Field is one of those common iPhone action games where you need to survive the attacks from your enemies to make high scores, except, it comes with a slight twist. As the name of the game suggests, your primary goal is to stay alive without succumbing to an incoming onslaught from an infinite number of enemies.
The entire action takes place in a small space bordered by a neon fence. You must dodge the attacks and fire back using the virtual, dual-sticks to survive long enough. As long as you keep surviving you will reach higher scores and unlock various upgrades and weapons.
Wars and Battles
A turn-based strategy game, Wars and Battles depicts the historic World War II. You get to choose to be alongside either with the Axis powers or the Allies. You need to pick your side, play and finish an extensive campaign that will involve bloodshed and sacrifices, just like in a real war.
Wars and Battles offers sophisticated graphics and an insightful gameplay that can engage you for longer hours. It is a game with intense plot and rich details that will entertain all the war, strategy and military game lovers.
VainGlory
If you are a fan of multiplayer online battle arena, then Super Evil Megacorp’s Vainglory should not skip your attention. It is a beautifully designed multiplayer strategy game with heaps of lively characters to play with.
It consists of eye-catching graphics and presents a brilliant gameplay. You must confront your enemy in a 3-on-3 battle, working through war horses, miserable cronies and tanks to destroy their center of operations.
Blue Defense: Second Wave
In this game, players try to protect a planet from circling invaders. There are endless modes for obtaining high scores: fixed individual levels can be played either for high scores or as starting points for the endless mode. In Gauntlet mode players try to survive fixed waves of enemies.
During each stage, players work toward medals that add replay value to the game. Tailor the controls to work better on both the iPhone (where you can use tilt controls for firing) and the iPad (where you can employ multitouch for firing multiple waves of bullets)
Super Mega Worm
Most games sympathize with the human, especially when ancient creatures are trying to eat that human. Not this one. Players control a giant worm that eats animals for sustenance, spits acid and a deploys a screen-clearing EMP bomb.
Armies of soldiers and tanks try to stop the giant worm’s rampage, so be careful. Bonus: in an additional set of levels, players try to devour Santa Claus.
League of Evil
Players rush through devious traps, devilishly-placed platforms and dangerous enemies, struggling toward the end – where they get to punch an evil scientist in the face. The game awards stars for completing levels quickly, and for picking up an out-of-the-way briefcase. Over 160 levels require lightning-fast reflexes. One level includes a set inspired by The Blocks Cometh.
Robot Wants Kitty
Fans of Metroid will like this game, in which players control a robot trying to rescue his beloved kitty. Throughout the levels, collect powerups for jumping, shooting and other enhanced abilities, which makes each level progress like a full-fledged game, only in shorter bursts.
Six levels are available by default, but in-app purchase opens five additional levels and a level creation community.
Army of Darkness Defense
In this game, based on the classic Evil Dead series, players control Ash Williams as he tries to protect the Necronomicon from invading Deadite hordes. Players summon troops and use special attacks to help fend off advancing enemies.
Gold collected during the levels goes toward Ash’s upgrades and castle improvements, like archers and a death pit to trap enemies. The game is very easy to control, allowing players to get into the rhythm they need to succeed.
Zombie Gunship
Many zombie survival games rely on scrapping by with one’s wits and limited weapons. Not this game. Players control an airborn gunship that takes out incoming zombies with heavy ordinance. The goal is to keep zombies at bay while survivors make their way to the bunker.
There’s something very satisfying about firing huge bullets from the sky that take out entire groups of zombies at once, though the best weapons can only be purchased with gold earned or bought in-game.
Walking Dead: The Game
Like the popular AMC television series, there’s only one word to describe Walking Dead: The Game. Awesome. The game brings the survival horror and psychological thriller theme of the series into the game in an all new story told in five separate episodes. If you love the TV series — or just love zombie games — you’ll love this one.
Punch Quest
What do you get when you combine a side-scrolling game like Golden Axe with an endless runner like Temple Run? Punch Quest.
It takes the endless running action and flips it on its side as you run and punch your way through the game, collecting currency and buying new abilities along the way. A great buy for anyone who loves the endless runner genre but thinks the last few games have just repeated the same old-same old.
LEGO Harry Potter
This one could really be LEGO Whatever. All of the Lego games are worth having, so it is really up to you to choose which one matches your interest. If you aren’t a Harry Potter fan, you can go with the Star Warssaga or go fantasy with the Lord of the Rings.
You can even be a superhero in LEGO Batman. No matter your choice, it’s hard to go wrong with one of these games.  What are the Best LEGO Games on the iPad? Find Out!
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
The Grand Theft Auto series breathed new life into the sandbox game. While the game isn’t without a story, the beauty of the Grand Theft Auto series is how much freedom you have to go out and do whatever you want in the game.
Vice City is one of the better ports for the iPad, which has recently seen a lot of big name games like Baldur’s Gate and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic ported to the platform.
Unfortunately, this can have a negative impact as well, such as when you have a long drive back when failing a mission. If you like some freedom in your games, or you just want to take a trip down memory lane, Grand Theft Auto is a good choice.
Wild Blood
If you like your iPhone action games to have a bit more RPG element to them, Gameloft’s Wild Blood might be more to your liking. As Lancelot, you had a hand in the danger facing the land. After betraying King Arthur, Morgana was able to open a Hell Gate while Arthur is too distraught to care.
It’s up to you to beat back the demon hordes. Not exactly a spellbinding story, but enough of one to get you started. A beautiful game weighed down at times by not-always-smooth controls, this is still one of the better action adventure games on iOS.
Temple Run
Temple Run is the perfect throwback to old-fashioned arcade games. As a 3D platformer, it is simple to pick up and play, and yet it has an addictive factor that keeps you coming back for more. It’s easy to learn, difficult to master, and it really pushes you to beat your highest score each time you play.
Best of all, you can unlock power-ups in the store and they stay unlocked for future games. It’s no wonder the game has been downloaded so many times since it’s release in mid-2011.
Death Rally
The type of game that is easy to pick up and hard to put down, Death Rally is for everyone that has ever wished Twisted Metal would come to the iPad.  A vehicular combat game, Death Rally will have you racing around tracks and firing off missiles, machine guns and laying down mines in order to blow your way to the top of the race.
And in between races, you’ll use your hard-earned dough to purchase new cars, customize your ride and slap on some new weaponry.
Monster Dash
Meet Barry Steakfires. He likes to run. He doesn’t like monsters. And therein likes the making for a great survival-horror-platformer action game from Halfbrick Studios, who also brought us Fruit Ninja. If you liked Pitfall Harry, but you wish it had a lot less swinging over swamp pits and a lot more shooting mummies with a shotgun, Monster Dash is the game for you.
Pizza VS Skeletons
Easily one of the funniest (and most unique) ideas on the App Store, Pizza vs Skeletons puts you in the shoes (if it had any shoes) of (you guessed it) a pizza. You’ll go up against all kinds of skeletons as you battle through multiple mini games, customizing your pizza along the way with different types of toppings.
Rage HD
Having brought us such names as Castle Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake, iD Software is something of a legend in the gaming world. Their upcoming game, Rage, is a console game with FPS and RPG elements.
But we don’t have to wait for its release to get a feel for the Rage world. Rage HD is an on-rails shooter that takes place in a post-apocalyptic game show where blowing away members of the mutant horde is a great way to rack up points. One of the most beautiful iPhone action games, Rage also has a non-HD version available.
Pinball HD
Pinball HD has just the right mix of cool tables, smooth design and nice controls to make you think you are playing a real pinball game.
Sure, you can’t pick up your iPad and shake it a little to get the ball to do what you want — maybe they’ll add that as a feature in the future — but you can rack up a cool score on a very pinball-like scoreboard and then post it to online leaderboards for all  your friends to see.
The game comes with three different pinball tables with a Slayer-branded (yes, Slayer the heavy metal band) table available as downloadable content.
Rayman Jungle Run
Do you love platformers? While not quite as famous as Mario, the Rayman series is one of the most iconic series in gaming history. And Ubisoft has done a great job making the transition to the touch screen.
Rayman Jungle Run features smaller levels strung together in a way that allows you to consume the content at a brisk pace, but for those who love to post perfect scores for each level, there is a ton of challenge hiding under the surface.
MetalStorm: Online
MetalStorm: Online puts you in the cockpit of your very own (and quite customizable) aircraft. And once in the skies, you’ll go up against the best opponent a computer can offer: another player.
As the name suggests, MetalStorm: Online features online play, which means you can go into a co-op survival mode with your friends or simply challenge them to a duel and shoot them out of the air. The game has intuitive controls and good graphics, and best of all, it is a free-to-play game, so you can test it out before investing in it through microtransactions.
Stupid Zombies
For the casual game fan, there are Stupid Zombies. A puzzle game passed out in bite-sized chunks, you’ll be facing off against the zombie apocalypse by gunning down the undead hordes.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of obstacles that want to get in your way, so you’ll need to use that noggin on the top of your head to ricochet those bullets into undead flesh.  Let’s just hope you are smarter than the zombies coming after you.
BlocksClassic
If your early-80s were spent playing Breakout on your Atari 2600, you’ll get a real kick out of BlocksClassic. A re-imagining of the Breakout style of play, BlocksClassic lets you smash through blocks and unlock multiple balls and bonuses in the form of bananas and stars.
The game includes a lot of variety in level design, and for those who like to try before you buy, you can give it a test run on the free version.
