Drifting Away

She lies in the rippling waters.  

Not caring if her dress is ruined,  

Or if the curls curled out of her hair.  

She lies there drifting.  

She lies there still.  

Everything around her moves with life.  

The grass is a fresh green,  

The flowers: red, blue, yellow, and white smell like freshly baked bread that melts in your mouth.  

But the water is not a pretty blue.  

The water is solid black like the jacket death wears.  

The flowers fall around her,  

Decorating her like a floating corpse.  

Her pale face looks up at the sky.  

She relaxes and the water pulls her further in.  

She lies there drifting.  

This is her escape.  

She lets the cold, dark waters seep into her skin.  

Turning her into a Popsicle.  

She let the water carry her on,  

Away from life,  

Away from the green, healthy grass,  

Away from her troubles at home.  

Slipping into the white light,  

She welcomed the gloomy, shady figure with open arms and a smile.  

Finally she could escape.  

Disappear.  

Dissolve.

Eine zu Herzen gehende Rockabilly-Tragödie, die einen jahrelangen Trend populär machte: Teenager-Dramen, die meist mit dem Tod der jugendlichen Protagonisten endeten. Dieses “Genre” wurde auch spöttisch mit “Death discs” oder “Splatter platters” betitelt.
