Whether you’re into conserving their native habitats, enjoy hanging out with our necky friends at the zoo or you just appreciate the joy of nature’s most weird and wonderful creatures, World Giraffe Day is a day of observance when you can really put your neck out!

The History of World Giraffe Day

The conservation and protection of wild animals have long been on our agenda – beautiful creatures such as giraffes are at risk in their natural habitat due to a number of factors, including poaching and destruction of their ecosystems and habitats.

World Giraffe Day was initiated by the GCF – the Giraffe Conservation Foundation – and hopes to bring awareness of the amazing animal’s plight to every concerned person across the world while also celebrating these quirky creatures.

According to the GCF, there are only around 100,000 giraffes left in the wild, meaning they are approaching high-risk status.

In the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, giraffes have recently had their listed status changed to ‘Vulnerable to extinction’ – their numbers in Africa have dropped hugely by around 40% in just the last three decades alone.

Specifically, the Masai giraffe has lost half of its numbers in the last 30 years, and now only around 32000 are remaining in Tanzania and in southern Kenya.

For the most part, these drops in the population are due to the increase of human settlements and the loss of habitat that goes along with it.

It would be a tragedy if giraffes were to go extinct in the wild. Not only are they a friendly species, but they’re also an inspiration. They’re unique in the animal kingdom, owing to their long necks, and colorful markings.

Interestingly, there are four separate species of giraffe in the world. There’s the Masai giraffe that lives on the border between Kenya and Tanzania. Then there’s the reticulated giraffe, the southern giraffe that lives in countries like Botswana and the northern giraffe, which dominates much of the north of Africa. The giraffe, as you might guess, is the tallest animal in the world. And no two individuals have the same spots. Every giraffe is different, just like how two people never have the same fingerprints.

Unfortunately, giraffes are officially extinct in more than seven African countries, highlighting the need to protect them.

The GCF now has dozens of partners all over the world, committed to helping to preserve this majestic beast. Parks in western countries regularly organize activities and games to celebrate the day, including face-painting in the style of giraffe spots! Many zoos also provide visitors with the opportunity to meet expert giraffe keepers and learn more about how they live, both in captivity and the wild.

There’s a desperate need for an event like World Giraffe Day. These creatures, like elephants, lions, and hippos, are an inspiration for children all around the world and a leading driver of conservation efforts. It is almost impossible to imagine an Africa where these giant beasts don’t roam the savannah.

How to celebrate World Giraffe Day

The GCF website has plenty of information for you if you wish to donate to the effort of saving the world’s giraffe population, and you should certainly take a look if you are fond of the long-necked creatures.

Even small donations count towards helping, and just a little money can go towards helping to ensure the future safety of the Masai giraffe.

Many zoos across your country will be taking part in fundraising and observance of this day – so if you want to get involved, you could pop along and play your part. There are also opportunities to get involved via schools, NGOs, government institutions and conservation organizations too. Most of the work on the day itself will be to raise awareness of the plight of the giraffe and to engage the community on the issue. i’m obsessed with moder/no-power aus with dream of the endless because HOW do you manage to make him human and even possibly a little bit normal. it goes against everything his character is and i LOVE watching people try to work around or with it because it’s great every single time.

like, take his career, as an example. dream being a painter or a sculptor, because he crafts dreams and nightmares. dream being an author, because he is the prince of stories. dream being a monarch, or some sort of politician, because he is still the king of dreams, no?

and when it comes to making stories for the rest of the endless it only gets more interesting. where does destruction go? does he go off-grid to fuck off in the woods somewhere all on his own (which is a little bit of the manly american dream if you ask me but shh)? does he move abroad? how do you write delight becoming delirium if she is human? does she have an accident and develop some sort of head-trauma, or does she deal with mental illness? or is she just “quirky”? is despair simply extremely depressed, desire just insanely horny, etc etc? when it comes to death, i always see her as some sort of a medical personnel, and i love seeing death written as a hospice nurse because you just *know* how satisfying that must’ve been to think of for the first time, of course she’s a hospice nurse, she guides people towards their deaths and is kindly and wonderful to all her patients and treats them all like friends.

and their names!!! what are their names!!! did time and night (if they are still called time and night, that is) name their children Dream and Death and Delight and Despair and so on and so forth like pretentious assholes (this could tie in with the “rich and famous parents” thing that i’ve seen some people write, because celebrities love to choose weird names for their kids), or are they named more normal things? what about the greek versions of their names, like Morpheus? what about the “D” theme being a set of childhood nicknames that stuck and never went away, even when they’re all well into adulthood?

and don’t even get me started on dream’s relationships. do you keep the drama of nada’s suicide, or do you tone it down to make it more realistic for a regular human man? do you make it so she and dream were truly so awful for one another she offs herself, or does she simply leave him? how does orpheus die, if there are no gods to kill him? how long does his marriage to calliope last, if she divorces him after their sons death? assuming you make dream the age of his actor (which is the only version of human-dream i’ve ever seen, so i’m going with it), he’d have to get married fairly young in order to have a son, have the son die, and then have his wife leave him, and have all of it be that far in the past, no? why did he marry young, then? were they dumb and in love? so much to explore!

how is he friends with hob! did they meet up once a year, instead of a century? what did he grant hob as a gift/boon if not immortality, considering that’s hob’s whole thing? did they still meet up at the white horse? did death still think dream needed to get out more, and just shoved him at the first extrovert she saw? what justification does dream have for only meeting once every year/few years/whatever other denomination of time you choose if he is not trying to examine hob’s mortal perspective on immortality? why don’t they just...text, or something normal? it’s because dream isn’t normal!! he’s a freak!! but HOW is he a freak in human terms!! just a goth? a shy dude? heavily traumatized? didn’t get enough sleep last night, or maybe ever, or maybe he gets too much sleep (because he is dream, after all) and he has some sort of sleep disorder? you decide! choose-your-own-adventure, silly loser of a wet cat edition!

not to mention the elephant in the room of the whole fishbowl situation. does he get kidnapped? is it political? for money? a relationship gone wrong? revenge against his family, adjacent to how it is in the show? for some new reason entirely? if he’s human, and not endless, how does he react to being captured and then later freed? how does he cope with PTSD? considering the entire sandman comic series is at least partially centered around dream’s changing character, would he reject therapy, and help from friends and family, or would he try to heal? and given what happens with daniel– does it even matter what he does in response to his trauma if the whole daniel thing still happens anyway?

how do you write their relationships and personalities and selves if they are not endless when that’s exactly what makes them all the way they are!!?? i love it so much. i love how creative fanfic writers are. i love you all. happy new year

I finally got around to watching The Sandman series, and MAAAN!! I’ve been waiting for this adaptation since I was 16, it was great! Like the comic, what was “meh” was meh, and what was good was fucking transcendent.

Not unlike the Good Omens adaptation a couple years back, this is also being modernized mostly for the better, but I do think modern technology and 30 years of societal changes do affect the suspension of disbelief on some of these characters’ issues. Like, I’ll grant you the “Serial Killer Convention” even in the 90s was very tongue-in-cheek, but in the 2022 police surveillance state we live in, it’s just... no, lol. That. No. That’s just dumb lol.

Mostly, I loved it, though, silly gripes aside. The stuff I loved about the comic was all there, the themes of what makes us human, the inherent need in all of us for stories and hope and wonder and the place of horror and despair among those needs, the utter alien coldness of most of the Endless and other immortal beings and their observations as outsiders on humanity, the contrasting and wholly moving warmth and empathy of Death, the entire thing hinging on the notion of change as this terrifying reality that we think we’re exempt from until we’re not and having to grapple with that even as we’re changing from within. Which.

WOOF, I gotta say, it has been like 10 years since I read The Sandman comics, and UHHH, I remembered these themes, in theory, but being 30, boy do they hit different! Goddamn. I first read these when I was 16, my favorite English teacher loaned them out to me and 16 year old Caitlin was like, “Oh yeah, cool, I love mythology!” But 30 year old Caitlin gets it now.... Holy fuck, do I get it now...

My only real complaint is that MORPHEUS’ HAIR WASN’T DUMB ENOUGH. That’s it. That’s my biggest gripe. His hair had potential in the first episode, but they overstyled it in the others... or maybe understyled it, idk, it wasn’t the big dumb Robert Smith lookin mop and I saw someone on twitter the other day call Dream “emo” which... god, if ever there were an argument for humanity’s destruction based on bad twitter takes. But I don’t think even that fool would have been able to ignore how obviously fucking GOTH AND BYRONIC Dream is supposed to be if you just gave him his big dumb 80s goth hair where he keeps all his feelings. You failed me, Neil!

But other than that, it was good and I loved it a lot. Definitely dragged a bit with The Dollhouse story arc, imo, the dialogue and delivery was really unnatural in a lot of places that was, granted, taken from the comics, but imo, better intonation or less stilted performances could have sold the “quirky found family” atmosphere better, but the episodes before that were VERY strong and picked up again in the last episode and a half.

Best dramas I’ve watched in 2020 so far (and some not so good ones)

The Untamed - (technically watched before 2020) should not come as a surprise since this blog is like 90% cql content, but it needs to be said. Based on Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. Canon gay relationship beautifully translated into live action despite the pressures of the censorship. Majority of the budget spent on costumes, which sounds like a bad thing, but it isn’t. Decent female characters, although majority of them die. All the symbolism you might want. 10/10

Guardian - based on Requiem of Souls by Priest. Canon gay relationship also beautifully translated into live action despite the pressures of the censorship. Silly and quirky, except for the ending, which ruthlessly disembowels you without any warning. No budget whatsoever. Definite lack of female characters. One fat cat. 8/10

Joy of Life: season 1 - based on Joy of Life by Mao Ni. Hints of polygamy and a “harem” present in the novel, albeit a small one, especially for the genre. Decent female characters. Three-dimensional and likeable villains. A fascinating twist which separates it from your ordinary wuxia dramas. Politics and intrigue. Xiao Zhan plays a heartbreaking side character. 9/10

Ever Night: season 1 - based on Nightfall by Mao Ni. Non-existent (hetero) romance for the majority of the episodes, minimal once actually introduced. Absolutely exhilarating fight scenes. Fake blood budget that must have broken the bank. Excellent female characters. A new twist on the “chosen one” trope. The cast includes Chen FeiYu and Meng ZiYi. Can be watched over and over again. 10/10

Legend of Awakening - based on Heaven Awakening Path by Lan HuDie. Decent + complex female characters. First few episodes are slow; the show takes a bit to warm up. Interesting premise. Amazing depictions of sibling/sworn sibling relationships. Villains leave much to be desired. Mediocre budget. Vastly entertaining and funny, but will break your heart when you least expect it. 7/10

The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty - based on The Fourteenth Year of Chenghua by Meng XiShi. Excellent budget, exceptionally well-rounded main characters, a wonderful mix of wuxia/detective show. Originally mlm novel, but unlike Guardian and The Untamed, fallen pray to unnecessary addition of female love interests. Regardless, a beautifully put together drama, definitely worth watching once. 7/10

The Lost Tomb: Reboot - based on Grave Robbers' Chronicles by Xu Lei. Excellent budget, plot, premise, and execution. Definite lack of female characters. Heartbreaking but fascinating main character. Endless fan fiction potential. Reasonably fast pace. Mystery with a side of found family love and resulting angst. ZhuYiLong ages like a fine, ridiculously expensive wine. 10/10

The “not so good” dramas

Ashes of Love - based on Heavy Sweetness Ash-Like Frost by Dian Xian. Interesting plot. Enormous budget. Visually stunning. Creepy relationship dynamics. People you should be rooting for are just shitty humans with very few redeeming values. You’ll fall in love with the “villain,” and he’ll get screwed. Luo YunXi is extremely pretty, and at one point, chained to a bed. 3/10

Fights Break Sphere - based on Battle Through the Heavens by TianCan TuDou. Interesting premise, a bit tedious in execution. Some budget, all probably spent on Xiao Zhan’s wig, which is worth every penny. One-dimensional female characters. Unintentionally funny. Worth watching once. 4/10

And the Winner is Love - based on Moon on Fire by JunZi YiZe. Fascinating beginning, mediocre middle, unsatisfying ending. Unsatisfying female characters, made worse by excellent potential in the beginning. Decent budget, visually gorgeous. Luo YunXi smiles a lot and fights with a fan. 5/10

Snk 136, 3 chapters to go

The final countdown begins. I am not ready.

There’s.....a lot to process, and I’m not emotionally ready for the conclusion. I know it is going to make me cry no matter what. Isayama has made considerable mistakes over the years, both in terms of his own ignorance re: History and Politics and choices in metaphors to use.

But this series, flawed and problematic as it is, still manages to stun me every month.

The central argument remains with the issue of having to deal with Eren.

To Mikasa, he is family. The boy that saved her, that inspired her to fight for herself, and that wrapped a scarf around her neck when she was cold and alone. The one that gave her a home and a family. But Adult Mikasa has been increasingly forced to confront the ugliness, the violence and hatred inherent to Eren. To peel away the idealized version of events, and see Eren for the murderous, self-righteous person he actually is. Someone that could murder another person in cold blood, while declaring that they weren’t a person. Someone capable of murdering innocent children. Someone capable of slaughtering the entire world.

She doesn’t want to kill him, even with no other options available. Annie gives her the easy way out, by suggesting that she focus on rescuing Armin. Give her something that she can do, that she won’t feel conflicted about. Save your friend. Let other people do the dirty work.

But everyone else seems to have accepted what has to be done. Eren cannot be allowed to live. To save the world, he has to die. As Reiner once said, he is the worst person in the world to hold that power. He’s using it to commit genocide.

Even with the world literally fucking ending, some people don’t seem ready to let go of their bigotry. Eldian refugees and Marleyan soldiers end up pointing guns at each other, while the Rumbling is literally on their doorstep. They are all about to die, but some people are not willing to abandon the old way of things. We’re left with a cliffhanger, left to wonder if the people that survived the destruction of Liberio will die at each other’s hands.

Gabi has come such an incredibly long way. She has in many ways become the Anti-Eren, and it has been a fascinating journey to watch their parallel paths. Gabi started out as basically “Girl Eren from the other side”, a passionate youth indoctrinated into a fantasy of saving/freeing humanity while destroying all the monsters. And like Eren, she watches her home get attacked by a Titan and swears revenge. She rampages and lashes out, she kills Sasha, and she’s captured by the enemy. But then their paths diverge, as Gabi learns the most important lesson. She learns that everyone is the same, she learns of the tragedies suffered by the other side, and she experiences compassion. She is for the first time treated as a CHILD to be protected, as opposed to a disposable soldier. The people she hated, the friends of a woman she killed, embrace her and swear to protect her because she is 12 years old. Because she is a CHILD, and it matters to them that she be protected as they were not.

She saw the Centipede-thing that is the Founder emerge from Eren, and she realizes this thing is the key. Who knows what will come from that. But either way, it’s....yeah. I like Gabi. I know she’s a huge target of fandom hate and rage, but damn has this kid undergone an incredible journey.

Which brings us to what I think is this chapter’s MVP:

OUR QUEEN AND BEST GIRL, PIECK. (why the fuck is her name “Finger” like whut?)

Pieck charging down the spear used to impale her Titan, transforming and then abandoning her Titan as soon as she’s attacked. Discarding Titan bodies and transforming over, and over, and over. She isn’t just a support Unit, she’s a Warrior in and of herself with unlimited stamina. She might not be able to tank damage like some of the others, but no one can compare to her in terms of Stamina. She can literally fight for months in her Titan, and she has no apparent limits on how many times she can transform. As long as her tiny, human body remains intact.....she isn’t going to give up.

Our girl that started out just funny and quirky, has emerged as such a brilliant and determined force. She’s wise beyond her years, and has such unique strength in terms of figuring out what needs to be done and doing it.

I fear for her survival in this finale, but man. Pieck is amazing.

Which leads us to our final big thing in the chapter.

Armin, who falls back into the old pattern of raging at himself for being weak and useless. He screams at his own body to move, to do something, to save people. He sees all his past failures.....and then he realizes there’s more going on. He’s not dead, he’s in the Paths. He’s been drawn into the center of this entire battle, finding Zeke as the new Slave that must constantly build the Titans from sand. Doomed to take Ymir’s place, as punishment for trying to use her.

Which means Armin has been placed into an ideal location for his talents. The Colossal Titan might be a God of Destruction, but Armin’s greatest strength has always been in his ability to deal with other people. To convince. To inspire. To manipulate. To reach.

Again and again, one phrase and idea has come up. The regret of not being able to talk to each other.

Now, Armin has been placed into an ideal location to reach the people in control. To reach Zeke, forming the endless Titan army. To reach Eren and Ymir, who are controlling the Rumbling.

Armin being the narrator of the anime is not an accident. Eren has repeatedly insisted throughout the series that he isn’t the hero, that ARMIN is the hero. That Armin is the bravest of them all, that he is the one with a beautiful dream of the world. Erwin entrusted him to lead during a vital mission, and Levi saw something in him that reminded him of Erwin before the years and losses destroyed his hope.

Armin will save the world. Not with violence and physical strength. But with the strength of his will, his love for the World, and his clever mind.

RECS: Love Turning Red? Here Are 5 Anime To Watch Next

Turning Red and its spirited girl-turned-red-panda protagonist Mei Lee have won the hearts of everyone who was once an awkward teenager. When Slashfilm spoke with Turning Red’s director Domee Shi about her animated hit, she chatted about her love of anime series of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Shi called out three timeless anime series in particular that stood out to her, both as personal favorites and as inspiration for the animated feature film: Sailor Moon, Ranma ½, and Fruits Basket. Those selections all include plucky teens and outrageous transformations — one even features a huge fluffy panda. Here's to you, Genma Saotome, the original martial arts panda.

Let’s take a closer look at anime that share those themes, starting with one of Shi’s choices that's so universally loved it's been made into a series twice!

Fruits Basket

Sweet romance, laugh-out-loud comedy, and emotional drama, Fruits Basket just about has it all. The supernatural anime originally aired in 2001 as a 26-episode television series. In 2019, it was adapted again into a three-season series, bringing back beloved characters Tohru Honda and her relationship with the unique Soma family.

Like the Lee family in Turning Red, the Soma clan is hiding a secret … a big, fluffy secret. When one of them is embraced by someone of the opposite sex, they transform into one of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. And, like Mei Lee, strong emotions like surprise or stress can also cause a partial or full transformation in a burst of colorful smoke.

Of all the anime in this list, Fruits Basket might be the most similar to the vibrant Disney movie. "I loved that series growing up," said Shi in the Slashfilm interview.

The Eccentric Family

The Lees and the Somas might think they're the only ones that have a shapeshifting family to deal with, but The Eccentric Family takes a similar concept into a more mature direction. In the supernatural drama series, humans, tanuki (raccoon dogs), and tengu (flying creatures) share the same world. Tanuki have the ability to transform into any form, including animal, human, or even plants or objects.

The Shimogamo family of tanuki live in Kyoto. Yasaburo, who often chooses the form of a teenage boy, is an aimless but clever young member of the family. As the story unfolds, he’s increasingly caught up in the intricate politics of tanuki society and the secrecy surrounding his father's death.

While The Eccentric Family lacks the whimsical nature of Turning Red, it's the compelling family dynamics and unusual mystery that make this anime worth watching.

Aggretsuko

For a lot of anime fans, hearing "red panda" and "anime" in the same breath can mean only one thing. That's right, Aggretsuko!

Red panda and put-upon office lady Retsuko might be a fraction of Mei's size in Turning Red, but what she lacks in height, she more than makes up for in pure rage. The adorable red panda channels her frustrations into heavy metal karaoke with matchless intensity.

While listening to Retsuko take out her endless anger on the mic is consistently incredible, it's her relationships with her quirky co-workers and steadfast friends that will keep you coming back for more.

Nichijou - My Ordinary Life

You might think nothing could match the wild energy of Aggretsuko, but wait until you see Nichijou - My Ordinary Life.
