ITS WORLD LIZARD DAY (AUGUST 14)
THATS RIGHT. LIZARDS. YOU LOVE THEM. YOU SHOULD. I HOPE YOU DO.
Tumblr media
(Image from National Geographic, FANPOP)
FUN FACT: LIZARDS EVOLVED FROM AMPHIBIANS NOT FUN FACT: BOTH AMPHIBIANS AND REPTILES ARE CRITICALLY ENDAGERED. YIKES.
Tumblr media
FUN FACT: Lizards have one tenth of the intelligence of a rat (Well, mammals such as rats, cats, hedgehogs...)

Noticed all the bugs hanging around you? Well, if you'd have a lizard around, that lizard would HAPPILY eat those bugs. And then they wouldn't be bothering you! They'd be dead. Lizards control bug populations, and also help spread seeds. They are super important to ecosystems and maintaining them. But being endangered, there are fewer around to support their ecosystems, causing an imbalance to it.

"Lizards also have emotions, such as fear, anger, curiosity, and even affection. They can recognize their owners, show preferences for certain foods or hiding spots, and display social behaviours with other lizards." (NEWS18)

i learned that the reason we see fewer fireflies nowadays is because there are genuinely fewer of them. 1 in 3 North American firefly species are at risk of extinction, with some species already being officially listed as 'Critically Endangered'! (x)

Jesus Christ I was just in my yard with my son and saw a MASSIVE eastern diamondback rattlesnake. Son of a bitch must have been 6-7 feet long and as wide as my fucking biceps. When I tell you I grabbed my son and booked it when it started rattling BRUH I almost shit myself

the "strange place" could be a private wildlife collector? i know the buying and selling of wild animals as pets can be pretty bad in the uk (or at least it is w/ birds of prey? that's abt what i know)
OH that's a good idea, that's going to be one of my top choices for if I DO end up needing to change the "twoleg den" in the upcoming super edition. Private wildlife collectors are a HUGE problem because the laws on simply owning exotic animals (as long as they're not covered by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act) are suuuuper lax in the UK, and the Zoo Licensing Act only applies if you accept general admission.
(and even then, specifically, you can take admission a limited amount of times a year. James Wellington's Animal Welfare Nightmare Extravaganza, beloved winter tradition, £25 each, kiddies of edible height get in free)
Birds in particular are a huuuge issue because there's big oversights in the laws surrounding the keeping of birds of prey. You don't actually need a license to own any birds except ostriches and cassowaries, or one of the five destructive invasive birds. Your pet eagle just needs to be registered so they know you didn't snatch it from the wild. Licenses will only apply if you're breeding, selling, or using it for falconry.
Maybe I could even tie this hypothetical antagonist guy to Sharptooth/One Eye/The God of Summer's previous human incarnation, on some off-chance the series ends up using this villain again. That could be kinda neat.

Today’s daily ocean fact: Sunflower stars are the largest species of sea star!
Sunflower starfish can have 16-24 arms, and can grow to have a maximum diameter of 1 meter/3.3 feet. They’re native to the northern Pacific Ocean, and are unfortunately listed as critically endangered by the IUCN Red List. Hopefully these really cool creatures can make a comeback someday!

Today I learned about the Devil's Hole Pup Fish. An endangered fish species that lives in only one small pond, which connects to a cave system, in Nevada.
These fish can only exist in one location, save for the research lab dedicated to preserving their species, and the land cannot be developed. There has been Assassination attempts on these flipping fish.
I don't know what kinda Scooby-Doo Sh!t this is, but it makes me so happy to know that there is a silly little fish out there making some Rich CEO scream.

and this isn't me personally judging anyone or making the broad sweeping statements that no one should be making those posts or whatever the fuck. i'm not speaking on this as a moral issue and there's probably people who do need to see it right now. this is me expressing my personal and non-universal belief that it feels like this

The fact that David Tenant (the man who plays 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘰𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳) and Endangered Species are both trending tags rn made me laugh harder than it should have.

I hate how half of people think "natural climate change = humans cause all climate change" & the other half thinks "natural climate change = no climate change is caused by humans at all"
"the Earth's climate naturally changes over time" & "human activity has caused rapid, unstable climate change" can & should co-exist

one of the best parts of my 2023 so far was joining a local facebook entomology group just before springtime. it was soooo cool to watch the waves of egg identification posts, little larvae, the million instars and then the final bug reveals and after a while you start to get really good at picking up on patterns like even if you can’t identify the species it becomes easy to recognize families of bugs, and that is a damn near close ID! it’s made me pay a lot closer attention to the insects around me and how rich the biodiversity is just in my neighborhood. & the stark contrast between manicured lawns and the gardens with a diverse range of local plant species UGH ecology is just so cool i <3 bugs!!!
