4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?

Yes! I fell absolutely in love with Heather Fawcett this year with her Emily Wilde series. Genuinely delightful series I will treasure forever.

9. Did you get into any new genres?

Not strictly new genres, but I have been really branching out getting into some literary and general adult fiction this year. It's been really nice to come back to reading and find all these new stories I can relate to now as an adult.

17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, actually. I will not lie I straight up did not understand why Susanne Collins wrote that book before I read it but now I understand the vision and will implicitly trust her going forward. Seated forever when she drops a new book.

20. What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?

Technically a re-release but I was genuinely hyped for the revised versions of the Bone Season books. I had read the first Bone Season book years ago, then decided to give the revised edition a go again after falling in love with the Roots of Chaos series.

It's definitely improved with the revisions from what I remember and it was a delight to actually get into the series. The wait for May was Hellish.

I'm still clawing my way through typing my NaNo manuscript (trying to finish today!), but!! that means that I haven't been able to do my post-project binge reading, yet, and I love my post-project binge reading--that's how I know I Am Taking A Writing Break.

The three on top are the last three standing from my "24 in 2024" list (Driscoll-related)(Driscoll is my MC in an ongoing revision project), so I'm gonna start with those, and then the two on bottom are bonus reads for If I Get To Them. I've been pining after TIME'S AGENT since the pub deal was announced (and sure we're calling that Driscoll-Adjacent, for interdimensional reasons). I also do really want to read WELCOME TO THE GODDAMN ICE CUBE in winter, and the dead week between Christmas and New Year seems like the perfect time for that.

dandelion is indeed the worst but if he’s not present in the next book i would legitimately be sorrowful as the whole thing will become a slog . you basically cannot have the “short stories” era-of-the-timeline iteration of geralt without dandelion, it would be like eating unbuttered bread.

though it’s not like season of storms did them dirty, i wasn’t disappointed with it (… with regards to them), but since it’s literally been over 20 years since the saga was finished i’m trying to prepare for any potential reality

As well as closing out the year with volume 7 of Husky and his White Cat Shizun, I thought I'd share with you all the books I read over the past year. I'm so proud of myself for breaking my goal and surpassing it by many more books than I expected to read this year! I have a few mini challenges set for my readings for the next year, just to try and change my reading up a little bit more (especially with some book choices I made this year that I ended up really enjoying). For now though, here's the 2024 collection!

4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?

Yes, I did!!!

Cathy Yardley and Talia Hibbert for fun romcoms that deliver on both the romance, the smut, and the good independent character work, not to mention emotional blows!

Mikaella Clements & Onjuli Datta (writing duo) bc they've written two books this year that I loved, one romcom and one horror/sort-of romcom - The View Was Exhausting and Feast While You Can.

Fonda Lee for epic fantasy that still manages to master compelling character stakes.

22. What was the longest book you read?

Storygraph tells me it was Jade Legacy by Fonda Lee, which both doesn't surprise me and also resonates with the fact that I read that whole trilogy back to back, like one very long book!

question: how do you find your research/sources? yours and dancing disasters' icemav fics are so inside baseball i love it, but how do you go about doing research?

I just read a lot & google stuff I don't know & am curious about. not that hard to start learning. and in terms of reading I've been interested in military history & milfiction my whole life. mostly related to the US army, actually--im extremely new to naval history and naval literature; all of that interest was driven by top gun. I've also been fortunate enough to visit a lot of the places I write about--ive been to Pearl Harbor a couple times & San Diego MANY times, for instance, and I've toured a few aircraft carriers and military bases. I've also finally bitten the bullet and kinda shifted my career path towards aerospace, so I've been learning a lot just by working in the aerospace & defense sector/spending a lot of time with people who do.

that's obviously not to say that I am somehow Educated in all this stuff. im pretty open on this blog about me being young & naive & wrong much of the time about how the real world works. so, you know, a lot of shit I just Make Up according to my preconceived notions of the military & the world.

here is my recommended military/navy reading list, some fiction and some nonfiction.

someone also asked recently if I had read anything good in the last 6 months--yes!! three new additions to my reading list: a) Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain. So goddamn good. If you have to read only one novel about the Iraq War, make it this one. It's more about America than it is about Iraq. b) Redeployment by Phil Klay. This one is a collection of short stories about Marines in Iraq, written by a USMC vet, talk about inside baseball. Crazy amounts of jargon in here, basically a "to-google" list. won the national book award which idk if it deserved, but it's good. c) No true glory: A Frontline Account of the Battle of Fallujah by Bing West. currently reading this one, really well done so far, talks a lot about how fucked the US strategy was in Iraq with Fallujah serving as a metonymy/case study for the war itself.

again... this is all mostly close-quarters-combat (infantry) literature, I really am not that interested in the navy/Air Force that much outside of top gun lol

though I did recently remember that in early 2022, before I was into top gun, I read "Wingmen" by Ensan Case, which is actually a gay US naval aviator romance set in WWII published in 1979! it's really authentic and kind of sad, obviously, since it was a 1940s navy gay love story published in 1979. I don't actually think Wingmen influenced how I wrote wwgattai or how I think of TG/TGM but I just remembered that I read that book in February 2022 and going "oh my god they were wingmen" so maybe you might find that book interesting.

Ermm definitely SVSSS & DTBPF! First isekai's I've read in a WHILE and they were really good!! We got tragedy (SVSSS) and comedy for both :> Love the relationship dynamics as well!

25) Did you create any characters (in games, art, or writing) this year? Describe one!

Oh hell yeah I did!! I had this one from a writing prompt, a commission I'm working on, + some concepts with friends!

Spun a wheel and chose: Liang Suze [ 亮素唶 ] ... (don't kill me i chose chinese characters based on meaning and nawt like. actual naming customs if that's the right word)

BASICALLY he's a main-side character in the commission novel! he's a prince on the run with his girlfriend and they're going to his girlfriend's older brother's house to avoid taking responsibility. He's blonde but he dyes his hair black because on the run and stuff. He's the peacemaker of their group and the most clueless/naive. BUT he's super good at negotiation because of his demeanor. but people use him a lot for that. idk i'm not very good at explaining. BUT I SWEAR HE'S KINDA KOOL

20 - What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?

To be honest? It was Diane Seuss’s Modern Poetry. It…very nearly lived up to my expectations. I had really high expectations because Diane is high on my list of favorite living poets, and though I wasn’t expecting the same exact style in Modern Poetry as in her previous books (one thing I love about her is that she can write about the same topics over and over but make them feel fresh each time), I was expecting to love it as much. And I didn’t, quite. It’s an excellent book of poetry, and I will definitely reread it at some point, but it didn’t knock me out the way her two previous releases, frank: sonnets and Still Life With Two Dead Peacocks and a Girl, did.

(Soft-ish) Book Buying Ban - continue buying (and reading) the Japanese light novels from the series I've already started; continue buying the danmei series I've started plus The Defectives, Silent Reading and Devil Venerable Also Wants To Know; buy at most 10 other books (choose wisely...). :P

It never fails to piss me off that because of my degree I wasn't allowed to take the bookbinding module (100+ hours of teaching) because it was "covered in the illustration syllabus". Was it. Because I got 15 hours in 3 years and they were all optional.

We got to third year and no one knew how to do a saddle stitch bind and the tutors (who we had in first year also) got mad at us. Like girl idk we'd BEEN asking for you to do more than all give conflicting opinions on poorly explained briefs but sure. Its my fault I can't really remember how to do that thing I learnt once when I was a silly idiot child (a fresher)

Anyways I'm planning to bind some little zines for xmas gifts and I know already that I'm going to scream and cry and throw up and do it all wrong repeatedly 🙏

And this will cost you a lot of time that could be spent with your desires…

You have all the information, why aren’t you applying. You tell me you have been in this community for 6 months, a year, 2 years+, but how many of those days you’ve spent in this community have you actually applied, how many of those nights did you actually apply and don’t just fall asleep after 5 seconds.

And i know why you’re lazy, it’s because you’re scared, you’re scared of inducing process, whether it be success or failure. You make yourself busy with scripts and subliminals, “i’ll script this really cool thing first”, “i’ll scroll a little on tumblr first” “lemme just look at the success story hashtag before i do it, it really motivates me” You try and distract your self, you delude yourself into thinking you’re being productive but really you don’t want to, if you wanted to you wouldn’t be here and I will ALWAYS stand by that. You put it off until the last minute and then when it “doesn’t work” you run back to tumblr acting like you actually did anything.

a really good analogy from @archsariel333 - “you buy the pens, the notebook, you plan for the book you’re going to write but, you never write it”

“let me just add this one thing to the plan”, “let me look at inspo for book covers and art styles for illustration”, “let me go to my book writers group on tumblr and see if they have anymore advice for me even tho i know how to write a fucking book”

I know it’s comforting and validating to be in the “waiting period”, the period of anticipation. You want to go shopping for a vacation, pack your suitcase, look at reviews on social media, plan the pics you’re going to take, but getting on the actual plane can be scary, you ask yourself “what if they deny my boarding pass”, “what if i fail to make it on time”, “what if im not eligible to fly for whatever reason”, you don’t want to leave your comforting circumstances and even the trip itself scares you just a little, so you cope by buying all the vacation outfits in the world, saving inspo pics into a pinterest board, looking at vlogs of other people going to that place. You can’t bring yourself to get on the fucking plane.

You need to apply, and properly, 2024 is almost over, the amount of weeks we have left isn’t even in the double digits anymore, I don’t want you to make it to the end of this DECADE still keeping the tumblr “foryou” page company, watching people coming and going feeling paralysed as people who came here later than you pass you by. I know the feeling sucks but whose fault is that?

I want you to scrap the amount you’ve been here. Since you’re the operant power right? I don’t care how many weeks, months, years you’ve been here, scrap it, you’re going to start afresh and you’re going to actually apply, when you have the time, you’re not going to go back to your notes app, notion or pinterest to script some more, you’re going to apply.

A lot of you have the knowledge that majority of the world doesn’t and time on your hands, do you know how powerful and extremely fortunate you are, to have time AND knowledge? i don’t think alot of you understand how much of a privilege that is you are unstoppable yet you stop yourself out of fear that you will “fail” to tap into the void and let yourself down. You are so privileged to know what you know and to have the time to apply it, so do it, your not gonna scroll on tiktok for a few more minutes or shove a million subliminals down your throat to “prep yourself” you’re just going to take a breath and do it. Induce pure consciousness, and if you fall asleep scrap that assumption and do it again.

Look at your life right now, do you honestly like it, do you like envying others for having what you can have at the snap of your fingers. Do you like the life you are living?

I want you to tell yourself that you will not be the reason for your own demise. you will NOT be the reason that it’s 2026,27,28 and so on and you don’t have what you want.

please just go and apply, i don’t even know you guys and it hurts watching you kill time when you could’ve had everything a day ago, an hour ago heck even 5 minutes ago.
