Bernard makes some unexpected connections.

Featuring BAMF EMT Bernard Dowd, injured Roy Harper, alarmed Tim Drake, and grumpy Red Hood.

Excerpt:

“Bear? What’s wrong?” Tim’s sleepy voice greeted him after only two rings. His boyfriend was the best.

Keeping his “quiet on set” hand raised in Red Hood’s face, Bernard spoke. “Hey Tim, so sorry about this. Everything’s fine, everyone’s okay, but I need you to organise transport to whatever the medical wing of the Batcave is. Can you guys do surgery there?”

Summary:

Bernard is tricked by Ra's Al Ghul into saving the life of Tim, who has just discovered he is Robin, with unconventional methods. Tim is saved, but is never the same again.

"Young Dowd," a voice blurted through the silence of the night as Bernard left his EMT practice.

"Who... who are you?" muttered Bernard, removing an earpiece to turn his attention to the creepy silhouette speaking to him.

Out of the mist of the cold night in Gotham City, a robed and bearded man, too out of place with the American city, appeared, making the young man shiver.

"You don't need to know any more than I'm the one who's going to help you save the one you love."

Bernard's brow furrowed and his hand let his wireless earpiece slip to the mystery man's feet. He bit his lip and took a step back.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Oh, of course you don't, young lover. You don't know anything, really. But that's what I'm here for. Find your beloved and I'll help you save him. Bring him to me and he will survive. Run away and you'll lose him, forever, it should be noted."

Bernard's heart was beating a mile a minute. Something must have happened to Tim, who else would it be that he loved. Besides, he knew, he felt, that Tim was into something, something big, he just wasn't sure what. By the time he stopped rambling, the man had disappeared.

He picked up his hearing aid and dialed his... something, right away. His hands were shaking and his mouth had gone dry to the point where if he tried to swallow his eyes watered.

"Answer, Tim, answer please."

However, all he heard from his phone was voicemail asking him to call back later. Again and again, no matter how many times he kept calling there in the middle of the street. He finally decided to keep walking home, though still with the phone glued to his ear in hopes of hearing Tim. But nothing was happening.

He felt he had already called about a hundred times when he sat down on his couch and turned on the TV without paying attention to it.

"The number you dial is not available...," his phone emitted before slipping from his hands just as he noticed the breaking headline on the news.

And Bernard's world was turned upside down.

Bernard Dowd is approximately 15 years old, has just had his allowance cut off, was fired from his job, and is 99% sure that both his best friends are somehow involved in the mob.

(I mean he wasn’t entirely wrong on either front but hey ho, no use dwelling on it)

All this means is that he has no money and no good way to spend his free time as Tim and Darla are always “Busy”

So when he hears of an up and coming crime lord just desperate for new recruits, he jumps on it!

(Guys I swear he’s a good person most of the time, he’s also a teenager who is rude or die and if his besties are involved in the mob who’s to say he shouldn’t be?)

Jason Todd (who was really only mildly desperate for new recruits, thank you very much) takes one look at clearly a child Bernard and immediately turns him down.

Bernard does what everyone else in his generation did and just ignores him and starts following him around everywhere.

Hey! Atleast he doesn’t have a camera and isn’t in a cape!

Jason falls victim to the same thing that Bruce did and realises that Bernard will continue doing what he wants and the only thing he can do is either help him or break his legs. Unfortunately he has a policy against hurting kids, even bitchy annoying ones with stupid sunglasses.

Several years go by,

He no longer has those friends, he doesn’t speak with his parents, and he’s about to enter college. He really doesn’t have time to be one of Hood’s merry men anymore.

He quits the life of crime, accepts his last pay check, and gets given a personal number from his boss.

(Of course they aren’t friends, don’t be silly! Jason is glad to see the stupid kid gone, gone off to civilian life where he’ll never see him again!…)

Bernard starts college, a dual major in Medicine and Cookery cause he hates himself, and almost immediately joins a cult!

…Should he have stayed with the Crime Lord?

Probably! ANYWAY-

Another year or so passes, he leaves the cult, starts dating Timothy Drake-Wayne, eventually finds out his boyfriend is Robin, yadayadayada boringggg

Bernard is at Wayne Manor one day when he hears a voice he never thought he’d hear again.

I'm new to DC, so I'm sorry for asking, but where did EMT! Bernard even comes from? i haven't seen anything like that in the comics yet

After Batman: Urban Legends (where Tim and Bern got together) and before the announcement of Tim Drake: Robin, fandom had absolutely no content to consume of Timber so what did we do? Go absolutely wild with headcanons.

One of the most popular ones was EMT!Bernard, because we all were wondering how was DC going to keep a civilian love interest relevant in the comic, many ideas were tossed around but EMT!Bernard was one of the most memorables, and it has stuck around even after confirmation that he is majoring in physics and biology, while wanting to become a chef one day.

Almost every kid gets married or promises to marry someone on the school playground, but only Bernard does that promise come back to bite his ass 13 years later.

Ok so this just wouldn't get out of my mind and I had to draw it to rest.

Well, I figured something like Bernard had a best friend in elementary school, who he used to play with at recess, used to go to the little grove at the end of the yard and share his lunch box and legos with him, they were the best friends. They promised to get married when they turned twenty so they could be together forever and when Bernard stopped seeing Tim, he "realized" that he was just an imaginary friend.

After all, no one else could see it and the bright blue wings and skin were indicative of Bernard's childish mind working at 100%. It had been fun, though, for as long as it lasted. Tim told him incredible stories about being the prince of a country, with a dragon for a father and a variety of brothers who were also magical creatures and according to him, Bernard had snuck into his castle. He played along because it was fun and Tim was very cute. The weird thing was that even though he grew up, his memories of Tim never faded like imaginary friends in children's minds do, he still remembered him and his stories perfectly.

On the other hand, Tim finds this intruder fascinating. No one has ever been brave enough to sneak into Bruce and his brothers' castle grounds just to play with Tim, show him such weird and funny things. When in the middle of one of his games the subject of marriage comes up (he doesn't know if it was Bernard or Tim who brought it up) he thinks it's a good idea. So they both promise, but then Bernard doesn't come back and Tim is sad for a while, but then he meets more friends (Kon, Bart and Cassie) and little by little Bernard becomes a nice memory in his memory.

Bruce found the fairy circle on his property and made sure to destroy it well enough that it would never grow again. He checked the territory to make sure that no unfortunate human was lost in the fairy realm or none of his subjects or his beloved children had gone to the human world unintentionally.

The promise is forgotten.

Tim becomes an ambassador for the Bruce kingdom and Bernard is making his way as an ER nurse.

And then Bernard comes home from a long shift to find an incredibly attractive stranger in his apartment playing with his cat.

"Hi Bern" The boy says with a dangerous smile "Do you remember me?"

From then on it would be a drama/comedy of the boys trying to break their promise, which obviously includes a trip/kidnapping of Bernard to the fairy realm, meeting the family, Ra's al Ghul trying to get rid of Bernard so that Tim he can marry one of his many daughters and have her join his family and work for him, more drama, and Tim and Bernard falling in love.

There are misunderstandings because they think that Bernard locked Tim in the promise to take advantage of him, and Bernard only knows that fairies are evil to humans and thinks that Tim is like that.

Bc I’ve been reading a lot of TimBer lately, especially EMT bernard dowd and listen..

what about Tim and the bats being all over gotham after like an arkham outbreak, chaos everywhere, a lot of people injured so EMTs are trying to be everywhere all at once and what if Bernard is one of these, staying even after his like 12 hour shift technially ended but still running around gotham, desperatley trying to tend to injuries and calm paniced children and keep them from dying, fuck there are so many dead people - Red Robin aka Tim and him only getting glimpses of each other during the whole night, until it is relatively settled and Bernard comes to wayne manor/bat cave (post identity reveal) to check on Tim mostly bc all of then habe been injured in one way or another. So he‘s walking in, still in his EMT uniform, jacket closed up to his chin, face betraying his worry and stress of the night, dragging his feet up towards Tim, who‘s maybe wearing some bandages but appears fine otherwise, making Bernard silently sigh in relief bc he saw so much devastation today he couldn‘t stand seeing that on Tim of all people. Until Tim furrows is brows in concern, moving in to lay his arms around Bernards shoulders but Bernard slightly flinching away, deepening the trails of concern on Tims face, aksing what is wrong, are you okay, are you hurt?? To Bernard just shaking his head while Tim very slowly, very carefully steps towards Bernard, cautiously pulling down his jackets zipper, gently moving his palms between jacket and Bernards Shirt…. sucking in a shocked breath, bc there‘s blood all over Bernard and his shirt, it‘s just clings to hin in sweat, and dryed, dark blood and is that a bloody handprint on his collarbone??!?? And Tim just stares in fear and worry, his eyes flitting all over Bernard to check for injuries before he hears a very quiet, barely there „it‘s not mine“, looking up to see Bernard leaving his head hanging, and Bernard, he‘s just so tired, void of any adrenaline that had him going for the last few hours, and just so exhausted, that he breaks down right then and there, rambling jn between tears about all the ones he couldn‘t save and who‘s body this blood used to flow through… so Tim‘s just holding him tightly, letting his muffle his cries in his shoulder on the ground, surrounded by some of the bats watching sadly albeit with admiration at this boy and all he did tonight …Tim‘s just left thinking „and they call us heroes“.

you know that trope where character A appears fine at first, until character B gently pulls away A‘s jacket, revealing a huge injury A‘d hidden and B just going „Oh love“ ??

Since one of the careers that Bernard studies is physics these are my headcanons.

-When the finals are approaching, he starts saying the important formulas or concepts out of nowhere. Like he'll be in his apartment, he'll be hugging with Tim on the couch and start reciting the Euler-Lagrange equation, or he's cooking dinner and start reciting the thermodynamics laws.

-Sometimes he will start throwing away scientific facts that he learned in class and found interesting. Like the multiverse or time travel. Tim, even though he has experienced them from first hand and had to know about them to fix some robin situations, he will listen to Bernard with all the love in the world and ask him for more details regardless of whether he already knows them.

-During the exam season Bernard hardly sleeps and his caffeine consuming increases to the point that even Tim is worried but once the last exam is over he will fall asleep a whole day and then come back to normal.

-Sometimes when he leaves class and a concept is very abstract or he doesn't understand how it works, he gets frustrated and will complain to Tim about his decision to study this, but as soon as he understands it, forgets this frustration.

-His main dream of him is to be a chef but it does not mean that he likes what he studies even if it is not what he wants to do for the rest of his life. Also, it gives him a different perspective to make his own recipes

-Lab reports are an ordeal, calculating uncertainty and dispersions is what he hates the most but in the end of the day. Laboratory practices are what he loves most about studying science

-Since he is doing a double major with biology, he likes evolution biology. He was considering doing his thesis describing with complex networks what could be the passage between microscopic and macroscopic life. Or maybe something about medical physics. (Let's not let health science Bernard die since he's no longer an EMT).

Summary: Fourth in the Networking series, which is my little playpen where I put Bernard, Jason, and Roy into the same room as many times as possible.

In this installment, Bernard gives Tim, Jason, and Roy a lecture about the importance of disguises.

Excerpt:

“Tim, you and I have had this conversation before,” said Bernard. “You know I respect what you do so much, but it’s physically painful to watch you and your family run around acting like a little sex dungeon mask is all it takes to maintain a secret identity.”

Roy grabbed Tim’s arm. “I love him,” he told Tim quietly. “If you don’t marry him, I will.”

The Networking Series

tim and bernard who break up and it's nothing big, no one cheated or anything. it's just their lifestyles didn't work out well together. tim cannot give up vigilantism currently and bear cannot handle the level of danger tim puts himself in. and on the other hand, tim cannot handle the fact that bear chooses to run into danger as an emt bc he already worries about everything but now he has to worry if he'll find his boyfriend convulsing from fear gas in a random alley but also bear who felt the life drain out of darla cannot stand the thought of not helping people and runs headfirst into dangerous situation after dangerous situation hoping that every person he saves can somehow make up for the fact that he could not save darla.

(he very pointedly does not think about the fact that there was nothing he could do because if he thinks about that, he'll spiral until they have to lock him in arkham too)

and so they break up but they were tim & bernard in high school and when they started dating they balanced out the worst of each other and they became tim&bernard. and everyone who knows them, knows that they're better together but they cant be together, they refuse actually because they cannot lose another person to the violence of gotham and by the time they figure out that they cant work together as long as the other is an emt or vigilante, it's too late for both them. they've already left too many pieces of themselves in each other.

tim still knows what bear means when he says "tim" in that exasperated voice. tim still goes boneless when he hears bear say "baby" in that firm tone. bear can still read tim like a book. he still knows the right way to massage tim's neck so that tim can go to sleep. everyone at the first responders gala knows not to bother ceo drake-wayne and senior emt dowd when they're talking.

(and if they're standing a little too close to each other than what is normal, who are they to judge? everyone knows that dowd and drake-wayne have history)

and if everyone on the night shift has caught red robin with his head tucked into the crook of emt dowd's neck as emt dowd runs a soothing hand up and down the vigilante's back, well then, they just quietly back away.

(after all, dowd's one of like, five, emts that can get the bats to receive medical treatment so if turning a blind eye to whatever the fuck they have going on is what allows them to give back to their heroes, then the night shift will do it every time)

and of course, tim and bear are practical people. they loved (love) each other sure, but when your lives are fundamentally incompatible, well, you cant get too stuck on the what-ifs, that's for sure. and so they do find love with other people and yeah, maybe it's not what they expected love to be when they first fell in love with each other. it's not the bubbly, stomach-swoopy, cant stop grinning, feeling that permeated tim&bernard's early days or the i Know you/you Know me that was their middle or the quiet despair that was their end but it is contentment. and in a life with as many losses as theirs, contentment is something they hold dearly

and they're happy! truly! but sometimes, at galas when they're making each other snort champagne out their noses or in darkened alleyways when their clothes are both stained with blood or at rallies for stricter gun regulations in gotham where they both sit too close to each other, fingers enclosed around each other in a death grip, when the presenters inevitably bring up grieves

(worst school shooting in gotham in decades, there's blood on their hands and blood in their mouths and darla is dead in between both of them and there is a chasm so wide that they are screaming to get their voices across and she will always be dead and maybe this had always been the problem that she is dead and there is no coming back from that and that there is blood on their hands and blood in their mouth and blood on their han-)

but sometimes, most especially on opposite sides of the street, as life pulls them in different directions, just sometimes, they see each other and just for a second, nothing too long, the flap of a hummingbird's wings, the time it takes to blink, an electron's orbital, they look at each other and for the briefest moment, blue on brown, a barely noticeable stutter in their steps, the space between heartbeats, because this is all they will give themselves because they do not dwell on what-ifs or what-could-have-beens, or what-should-have-beens, or delusions of a softer world, their eyes meet and they think to themselves, god, in another life, i would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with him.

Percy Jackson x Batman Prompt

This idea sorta hits me when i was reading pjo x batman fics (sleep deprived near midnight)

From what I noticed, when Bernard Dowd is a character within these fics, he would often be a demigod child of Apollo. Which stems from the popular fanon of EMT! Bernard. So....here me out on this one.....child of Dionysus Bernard.

As we know, Bernard got kidnapped by a cult named 'the children of Dionysus' and was almost sacrificed. Which can lead to angst potential with Dionysus, with Bernard having trauma from the cult.

This could also have potential if we set the timeline to HOO where we could have dynamic between Bernard and Pollux. With Bernard being claimed late and Pollux finding himself with a brother again. Leading to fluff and possible angst.

In short, I would just love to see a fic where we have a son of Dionysus! Bernard and wish to see how that would play out.
