Mice Can Sing!

Rodents, often viewed as simple creatures, exhibit surprising complexity in their behavior. Mice and rats display human-like traits such as laughter when tickled, empathy by sensing each other's pain through facial expressions, and even an ability to discern artistic styles like Picasso and Renoir.

Studies reveal that male mice produce intricate ultrasonic vocalizations, or "songs," to communicate with females. These songs vary in complexity depending on social context: when males can't see females but only smell their urine, the songs are louder and more intricate; however, when in the presence of females, the songs become simpler but longer.

Researchers at Duke University have found that female mice show a preference for more complex mating calls, indicating their effectiveness in attraction. This suggests that male mice invest more energy in attracting females when they can't see them, but once in close proximity, they focus more on mating behaviors. The study aims to explore the brain mechanisms behind these vocalizations and whether mice can learn new songs, potentially shedding light on communication disorders like autism. Published in the journal Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, this research underscores the complexity of rodent behavior and its implications for understanding animal and human communication.

The Brat returns!

I haven't wanted to talk about it much because frankly it has been agony, but ever since her brothers passed and the turmoil of the babies began, Fancy has not been doing well. I'm sure regulars have noticed her absence, and this is part of why. Anxious, subdued, easily overwhelmed, pupils blown out 24/7. No peeps or smirking or playful swats, no more bite days. Even her training didn't interest her. Utterly unlike herself. Meds helped, I stress she has had full veterinary support, but it was utterly gut-wrenching to see such a vibrantly spirited cat brought so low. At several miserable points we considered rehoming the babies to try to bring her back to herself, but then we kind of decided we should let them grow up first to see if they settled down.

Well, a couple of weeks ago, Fancy turned a corner. She slapped me from the kitchen counter a few days ago. She flops and wiggles, she scampers off in a huff. She initiates play with the babies instead of hiding. She does naughty things and tricks. Her pupils are going back to being their usual slits, and she smacks her lips and talks to me again.

She is doing so much better. Better every day. So I just wanted to say she's doing really well and my heart has come home.

The Zorca Clans

One of the many cool things I learned about orca are all the eco-types! At first glance I thought they were all the same but turns out there are tons of differences in each pod, making them unique in their own way. And I wanted to incorporate that into my zorca ✊

The Zorca are split into four clans. Originally I was trying to give them names based on musical terms to follow the theme with Sidon and his family. Later it dawned on me to name them after the various whale/fish deities from the games.

Clan Levias (Skyward Sword)

Clan Marin (Link's Awakening. She's not a whale, but she does sing Ballad of the Wind Fish)

Clan Oshus (Phantom Hourglass)

Clan Jabun (Wind Waker)

The Levias Zorca are based on resident killer whales, their diet is primarily fish and they have what's called an open saddle patch! (which gives them a hook like shape) Resident orca tend to stay in defined areas where their fish prey stick to. Levias zorca use echolocation and team coordination when hunting, with everyone taking on specific roles!

Marin Zorca are based on Bigg's killer whales also known as transients! They eat a wider variety of marine life, from seals, to sharks, and other cetaceans👀 Like the Bigg's orca, Marin Zorca migrate as they search for food. While they use echolocation as well, they have a number or hunting techniques ranging from stealth tactics, blunt force trauma, and coordinated chases to wear down their prey!

Clan Oshus are based on B-type orca (which is split into two sub types, B1 and B2) These guys are so fascinating! They live up in the waters of Antarctica and they're often a brown yellowish color, which is caused by cold water algae called diatoms. They have a stripe that connects the saddle patch to the eye patch called a dorsal cape. And every so often they travel to areas to clean off the algae. SPA TRIP! Being close neighbors, they hunt with Jabun zorca from time to time. Seals in particular are a tasty but hard-to-reach treat on the ice, so they developed a unique way to fix that!

Clan Jabun are based on D-type orca! Another artic/sub arctic dwelling eco-type. They have bulbous heads and very small eyepatches, sometimes no eye patch at all. They're also super secluded which makes it difficult for researchers to study them. But they have found these orca are one of the most inbred mammals in the world. Something the Jabun Zorca are doing their best to avoid!

Phantom Zorca! Not an eco-type but they're based on sightings of white orca seen throughout the years. Frosty and Tl'uk inspired Kaska (even though I started leaning towards a cream color than grey now), and there is Iceberg who was first sighted back in 2010 in Russia. And there have been several sightings in Japan! It was said there were reports of melanistic orca in the past but no photos of any so far! Phantom zorcas are not too common, but they're not treated any differently from their black and white cousins meaning theyre not seen as bad omens and such. But if you happen to see one, then for certain one of their parents must be from Clan Oshus!

The relationship with their zora neighbors is tenuous at best. Oshus and Jabun are rarely seen, which means any encounters hylian's have are with Levias and Marin zorca. The Zorca absolutely do NOT see any of the hylian races as food, but their elusiveness, size, and unfortunate encounters have only worsened their reputation for being demons of the sea.

Diplomats, like Kaska, have tried to establish contact with other zora territories to help waylay these fears, but the zorca still struggle since they are so hard to keep in contact with. They have no kingdom of their own, and have been considered vagrants and mindless eaters thanks to baseless rumors.

The ironic thing is zorcas are extremely generous to those who show them kindness. Befriend one individual and you befriend the entire pod (and the same is true if someone is cruel!) All one has to do is be brave give them a chance!

Listening to The Horse and I was not expecting Is Here to be so serene after Remembers and Is Close... Really wonderful album, thank you for posting about it.

The Horse Is Here now. It's alive and in a moment of peace as just itself. I like that finale because the album is Very focused on the exploitation angle for the most part but the human element (via orchestral score) isn't absent from that moment of serenity for The Horse. There's some level of shared experience between the two animals, the horse as it exists today was shaped in interaction with humans and the total arc of human history (for better and worse) would not have happened without the horse. You can't paint the full picture without both.

I'm really happy the post got Some reblogs and got people listening to it because it's such an important album to me. I'm almost guaranteed to cry at least once on a full listen, and I don't cry easily so that's a pretty big deal lol.

#The album is grappling with some scattered things conceptually but I think it comes together in this really interesting narrative #where the 'human history of music' angle is a parallel to the relationship with a domesticated animal #I also think I project some of my own stuff on it because iirc the composer's angle (while not outright anti-captivity afaik) is focused #almost entirely on the exploitation. Reflected musically by squeezing everything he possibly could out of The Horse. Getting sound samples #from the body and paraphernalia and etc. And I think that angle is definitely critical especially for an animal that's been used #so uniquely in warfare and to run into artillery fire and etc but I Receive a more holistic narrative out of it.#Like I like The Rider (Not The Horse) because it's definitely a moment of transcendence for the human (not the horse) but #I don't see that all that cynically. I think there Can be a lot of beauty in how much we see in other animals that they obviously #do not experience themselves because they're not concerned with Such Things.#(Though tbf it being followed by The Truck arguably places that moment in a more squarely exploitative context)#Getting to ride a horse at full gallop (something I was Very Mad I wasn't allowed to do during my like 2 trail riding experiences as a kid)#and after getting over how bumpy that shit was feeling so excited about how I was Not Falling Off and just absolute joy about how #fast this thing was moving and how strong this huge fucking animal is and how cool it is that people have been doing this for centuries.#It's so much different than just Going Fast in a car because it's an interaction between two sentient beings and you're being lent #the abilities of an animal other than yourself and getting just a tiny taste of being something other than human.#Just completely exhilarating. The horse is not experiencing All This of course but according to her handler she showed clear signs #of being in a very good mood and was notably perked up once she got to start running full tilt.#(And sure we could not know For Sure that this was actually the case but horses are very expressive and this person was very #experienced with horses and this animal in particular so I think it's safe to take her word for it)#Our emotions are felt differently than other animals because we have such complex subjective experiences informed by language #and culture and identity and at least the raw psychological impulses towards spirituality (whether you actually have spiritual #beliefs or not) but like there's underlying things that are the same. In that moment both animals involved in the interaction were #what we call Happy. Big moment for the rider and small moment for the horse but both are experiencing an overlapping Thing.#This isn't Always the case. The moment of transcendence for The Rider could be boredom or pain for The Horse but the overlap can #and does happen.#Yeah Matthew Herbert is representing the notion of extracting as much as possible out of The Horse in his audio sampling but his #actions themselves aren't that exploitative extraction. He's using the remains of an already dead animal to make music as we have #for millennia and assembling all these resources to honor this animal and make really beautiful art about it.#Anyway that's a long winded way of describing what I experience in this album. Kind of the full spectrum of the human/domestic animal #relationship which spans horrific exploitation and mutual necessity and veneration and love and being Two Animals On Earth

I know it's a fact of life and all, but it does give me the heebie jeebies, knowing there's someone out there whose job is to masturbate male pigs so they can ship off semen to artificially inseminate sows.

Like I get it... it's just...like...business, circle of life, this is how the meat industry is efficient in how it breeds livestock, but...

What i like about them is that none are perfect, none are always 100% in the right or wrong; they have fleshed out personalities and all have done horrors and all have done acts of kindness. You cannot exist in a world and not have fucked up as much as you try to do good. Your own internal struggles affect those around you bc you inevitably make actions/choices based on them.

But everyone can recognize your faults and attributes and still choose to stand with you or be a part of your life. I think it is neat how Dungeon Meshi makes a point to actually point that out.

#God this episode is so so good.#Tachihara sweetie I'm sorry I never talk about you. I swear I love him so so much he's an amazing character. I love his story and conflict–#so much.#This arc is peak bsd writing / meta literature plot. The tearing page moment is insane. The sentiments expressed here are so–#deep and emotional. The theme of the ordinary man. God and the force of human spirit.#Fighting against one's own destiny and finding the reason for own's existence. It's all subjects that are so interesting to reflect over–#and they're elaborated on in such a cool and compelling way. I love Dazai's quote on the strength of humans who–#“are caught in the tempest of contingency and scream‚ run and shed blood” so much. It moves me deeply.#The animation was really neat. A lot of detailed sequences. The wind was animated beautifully. The colors were so pretty and the stained–#glass visuals still go so hard.#Again I love Tachihara's conflict so much!!! I'm so into tachi/gin too... I know it's more of a Tachihara x oc since. Well.#We know little to nothing about Gin. But there's still so much spice to it... I feel like most scenes for the first episodes will be about Ed turning every situation he finds himself in into a way to bring up Stede (can’t have comfort without the hurt 😞) MUAHAHAHAHA
