Equinox born, Emory was always light on her feet. Her mom used to call her her little bird, always flitting to and fro. They were considered lower class on Equinox, but they got by. Her father, Simon, worked on the transport systems in repairs and her mother worked in local politics, trying to make their world a better place. They didn't have much but they had conviction that working hard and speaking up was the way to go.

But she learned early on that might not have been the case when the transport system workers went on strike and her father had no choice but to join, even though they desperately needed money. Her younger brother was sick. He'd struggled with health issues early on but the resources available to them on Equinox weren't nearly as advanced or as accessible as they should have been. As such, their mother continued to advocate for better representation on Equinox, and her father for better pay.

The strike went on for a week before some security personnel claimed to have seen a weapon and all chaos broke lose. Violence swept through the crowds of workers with Vanguard and other station security called in to put things back in order. Of course, because we can't have happy fams, her father was on of the casualties in the chaos.

Despite their family's grief, this only pushed her mother to speak louder, demanding Equinox had more sway and gathering support with her rhetoric and call to action. At the same time, a family organization on Olympia reached out, having heard of the tragedy of her father and the struggle for getting the right treatment for her brother. They believed it was the right thing to do and provided a pathway for treatment in Olympia. (WC). This proved to her mom why they needed equality more than ever. If it took an outside force provided much needed help.

In the past few years, her mom joined the council, gaining votes and being a prominent figure from Equinox. They may not have many representatives, but Emory believes that her mom is worth more than a few Olympia council members.

As all this was happening over the years, Emory continued schooling before being accepted into the AP program (WC) for dance and ballet in particular. She worked hard but the stress of life and the pressure of the program proved too much, with anxiety making her sick to her stomach before and after practice, and sometimes during. She wasn't cut out for it and after a year, to her shame, she failed out altogether. Em did her best to lay low, especially in the midst of a re-election for her. mother to the council. Not wanting to be seen as a failure or impact her mom's success.

Failing out was her biggest shame, and there was a part of her that was glad her dad wasn't around to see her crash and burn. It was bad enough that her mom and brother had. By the way, her brother was now fine, and a little shit, making up for lost time being a sick boi.

Anyway, uncertain of what she wanted to do (considering she didn't make it to Olympia as a professional dancer), Em got a job at Port Nexus. It's not exactly what her dad did, but she remembers coming to the station there with him when she was a girl, and him explaining how important the port was to their lives and how much work went in to keeping it going.

She now works as an information officer at Port Nexus, providing Station info to new arrivals and helping them find their way. She doesn't mind helping people and finds that she likes being useful. Em is diligent in her work, and though she avoids talking about her time in AP out of shame and self-critique, she is quite curious, enjoying learning about others who come through. She's also a bit unpredictable, something her coworkers (WC) learned about her humor and the fact that sometimes she's a stickler for the rules and sometimes she lets people break them if she thinks it's needed.

Things were going just fine, even if Em was stuck in a bit of a slump. She was walking to the shuttle station on Port Nexus one night, late after work having stayed to close up the information desk, when she was the witness to a crime. She thinks it's only thanks to her light footedness that she avoided detection, quickly making herself scarce when she nearly rounded the corner and saw an older man (Thaddeus Dawes) being attacked.

It was one of the blind spots on the Port as well, less traveled except by station workers. His assailants were asking where is it and she can still close her eyes and hear the sound of fists hitting flesh before hearing the sharp zing of a plasma knife cutting through flesh. The man's cries were muffled beneath something and then it all stopped. She waited what seemed like an eternity when the attackers left.

Emory hesitated, telling herself she should turn around – she should forget what she saw. And then she thought of her father and mother – neither of them turning a blind eye to suffering and she took a breath. She jumped into action, rushing to his side as he bled out beside her. She was just about to check his pulse, trying to help him, when he grabbed her hand and to her horror, told her to cut a chip out of his arm when he died and to get it to Vigil. Then he died. And because I'm tired basically she did the thing, cut it out and ran away.

What Em doesn't know is that the chip was stolen from powerful people, and in it contains a virtual treasure map of sorts, showing where a million Lumina Credits and two Million Stellar Credits have been hidden. She's not sure why she took the chip, especially when the men seemed so dangerous. She's had it for several weeks now, uncertain what to do with it. But she's stuck with it now, wondering who Ghost is and what she's gotten herself into.

CONNECTIONS

Benevolent family from Olympia – the people who essentially sponsored her brother's treatment. Maybe someone is also a council member and is friends/allies with her mom on the council. Maybe people think that's how her mom got on the council and not through a fair vote / could cause rumors.

AP program classmates – people who made it through when Emory didn't. Maybe she lost contact. Maybe she pulled away. Maybe they pulled away. Maybe they're still friends.

Port Nexus coworkers – could be strictly professional or could be friends. Maybe they don't get along, maybe they're just work friends.

Assailants – the two people who attacked the older man looking for the chip, maybe they're trying to find out where it went

Vanguard – covered up the death probably to avoid panic but maybe some people are asking innocuous questions that can be overlooked unless someone knows something, like setting a trap of sorts)
