How you meet and realizing you like them | The group chat.
PART 2
-Tanner-
You were a semi-big youtuber and twitch streamer; you mostly got popular from you and your friends playing dumb games and making eachother laugh, and it seemed to make other people laugh too because now you're making money from it. You weren't doing anything really, just scrolling through your social media to see what was going on in the world, then you saw that you had a new friend request on discord.
Isaacwhy: Hi im isaac. I don't know if you know who i am but me and my friends do youtube and i have an upcoming project that includes me putting my friend Tanner also known as BigT through my version of the bachelor. The reason I am messaging you is because my friend Tanner has a big crush on you and we want to surprise him with you for the last round. If you don't want to participate with my idea that is totally okay, please message me back if you have any questions.
You sat there and thought about it for a second; It sounded like so much fun and you could make someone happy and also gain some new views yourself from it. You messaged Isaac back to tell him that you would do it, you guys spent a couple minutes chatting explaining what would be going on and when they would introduce you. Basically they would put you in a secret discord with the other contestants and once tanner is down to the last to the last rose he will choose the winner. Once he chooses then isaac will pretend that the game is over and that tanner and the winner will get a date, but then he will tell tanner that he could choose the winner or you then you will get five minutes to convince tanner to choose you for the final rose. Seems pretty easy you thought, and it sounds really fun you couldn't wait to shoot the video.
After waiting a week it was finally time to record the vid.isaac had gathered all the contestants into a chat with him and tanner and you got to sit in a secret one with isaac so when it got down to the last person he would message you to join. An hour went by until Isaac told you that Tanner was picking the winner. “Yayy congratulations emmi you have been gifted the last rose on the discord bachelor, how do you feel tanner?” “it feels so good isaac now i don't have to cry myself to sleep because i'm so alone “ everyone laughed and pretend to cheer tanner on but thats when isaac dropped the bomb on him “ wait what's this we have a secret contestant that i may or may not have placed last on purpose”. Everyone got quiet to listen to what Isaac was going to say next “ladies and gentlemen, let's introduce our secret contestant Y/N!!!” “hey everybody im super excited to see yall” no one spoke at all, they were in shock that isaac got you to come. “OH MY GOD AHHH'' tanner screamed like a teenage girl meeting taylor swift “ok ok ok tanner calm down i know i'm the best, but since we now have a new player we still have to play by the rules” “ nuh uh i know who i choose, i give you y/n this rose as a symbol of my love”. Tanner stuck out his hand at his camera with a funny seductive look on his face. You and others bursted out laughing, man you don't know who this guy was but he sure could make your stomach hurt from laughing and it was a bonus that he was super cute. “No tanner dont forget about emmi over here. Since you already got 5 minutes with emmi alone, i am giving you 5 minutes wut y/n then you will decide who you will actually pick”. Oh god you're actually getting nervous, your hands got all sweaty and you stutterd like an idiot when isaac asked if you were ready, isaac moved you and tanner, and himself into another chat and tanner changed his background to look like a fancy restaurant. “So tanner, isaac told me that you have a big crush on me. Is that true?” Tanner just looked at you with eyes wide and mouth open like when Roger Rabbit sees Jessica rabbit. You couldn't laugh at his goofiness , you have to admit that you were actually having a good time.
Five minutes passed and it was nothing but talking and laughing at tanner being silly “Okay boys and girls now it's actually time for tanner to pick the winner” isaac interrupted. “Hmmm it's a tough pick isaac. Emmi i did have an awesome time with you and you were my first choice, but I'm sorry y/n is my choice. I WILL ALWAYS CHOOSE THEM NO MATTER WHAT GIRL COMES UP TO ME!”. Everyone laughed as tanner acted like a wwe wrestler at smackdown, but you were just staring at this man that chose you over 10 other people you couldn't help but sorta fall for.
-Yumi-
You’ve been really go friends with isaac since highschool and you guy stayed to be really good friends out of highschool. Isaac had always talked about being a youtuber and you always supported the idea and even offering your help with the editing; which was also helping you since you really liked working you on your own time, working with a good friend of yours, and also make pretty good money from your passion. Not only did you work with isaac with his editing but you also did the editing for the group chat podcast; even though you did all the time consuming work for them they had no idea who you were since you didn't live in austin and only complicated through isaac. You were editing on a Friday night so Isaac could upload the video the next day. You were almost done. All you had to do was look over the footage to make sure everything was good but you kept on getting distracted by yumi. You have never met Yumi but you see him everyday and you get used to his face, sometimes it makes your day better. He always had something witty to say or had a good joke to tell, and you sorta started to have a crush on him. Isaac knew about your little crush even though you never said anything he could just tell whenever you asked how they all were and you always asked about yumi first. You were done and just sent the file to isaac when he texted you.
Mr.Famous: Thank you!
y/n: no problem. Just text me when you have something for me
Mr.Famous: I actually do. How about you come to Austin and come on the podcast?
You couldn't believe it. Going to Austin and maybe seeing Yumi for the first time, and also seeing your friend that you haven't seen in a long time.
Two days passed since you talked to isaac about coming to austin and now you just got your suitcase from baggage claim and stepped into your uber. Isaac said that he was setting things up for you at the house so he couldn't come and get you from the airport, some friend he is.
At the group chat mansion:
“Tanner don't spill that cereal on the couch they are almost here” “Whos almost here” tanner said with milk dripping out of his mouth “y/n” “whos dat?'' Larry chimed in as he and the others walked in behind him “Are you guys serious i told you two days ago. Y/n my very good friend since highschool that edits my videos and the podcast”. Everyone all passed a look pretending like they knew what their friend was talking about “ you know what i'm not going to say anything-” isaac was cut off mid sentence by the door bell ringing.
You heard isaac shouting from the other side of the front door so you decided to help out whoever was getting their ass chewed out by isaac and ring the doorbell. The yelling stopped and you waited a second before Isaac opened the door with arms wide open and a smile. You and Isaac hugged for a good second since this was the first time you've seen him in almost 2 years since he moved from pennsylvania. You guys finished your hug and grabbed your bags to come in, you were a nervous wreck due to it being the first time meeting the others. You stood in the living room looking at the 4 in front of you “ hey everyone, it's finally good to see your guyses faces' ' you went up to hug them all. Larry took the hug with a big smile on his face, tanner put on his seductive face like he always do and gave you a hug like a like a rich person would, nick gave you a hug then i medentalty put the camera in your face and asked you to say hi to their fans. Now it was time to hug yumi, now yumi did not like physical affection and everyone in the house knew that besides you. Everyone watched and waited for you to make your way to yumi, but you could tell that yumi was uncomfortable with the whole hug thing so you just dabbed him up;which surprised him but he was okay with it.
You spent the rest of the day with the boys but it wasn't long since you didn't show up to the house until 6. Isaac had to go get the mail from the Po. Box before the mail office closed (wait a great friend honestly!) Larry and Nick went with him and Tanner had decided to stream. It was now going on 11 and you were getting tired so you texted isaac where you were supposed to sleep.
Y/n:Hey i tried to stay up but im really jet lagged, where am i sleeping?
Mr.Famous: Sorry I won't be back for another 30 mins. Ask yumi to show you the guest room.
OH great, now you have to disturb someone because you finally get out of the house since you work from home, and the person you do have to bother is your crush. That's soooo awesome. You hyped yourself up before you stepped into the kitchen where yumi was eating something “hey i don't mean to bother you but could you show me where the guest room is because isaac won't be back for a while” “yeah no problem”. Yumi put his food down and walked before you did so he could show you, he was about to walk up the stairs until he looked back at you to see you struggling to put the handle on your bag down so you could carry it. Before you could react to what was happening Yumi grabbed the handle and pushed it down so he could grab and carry your bag up the stairs for you. “Oh you don't have to do that i would have gotten it but thank you” yumi didn't say anything until you guys got to the top of the stair “it's no big deal just being a help” he continued walking until he got to an open door. You looked into the room to see a bed, a closet, a desk that had a pc with a bunch of different electronic stuff around it, and next to the bed was a pile of plushies that you've always seen in the back of videos. “Sorry Isaac made us put some stuff in here since we don't use this room, but all the stuff on the desk works if you need to use them” Yumi said as he walked past you to put your bag on the bed. “Oh no it's okay i don't mind” you smiled towards him to assure you that everything was okay by you “well goodnight then” yumi said as he just stood in the doorway staring at you “yeah you too have a goodnight”. You guys just stood and looked at each other for a second until the unthinkable happened; yumi reached down and awkwardly hugged you “sorry i just feel bad for earlier”. You just watched him walk to his room with a dumb smile on your face, you couldn't believe it. Thee Yumi, the man you have a little crush on, gave you a hug. Man life is great, you thought to yourself while you drifted off to sleep.

Mary Streep & John Cazale during the filming of "The Deer Hunter", Margaret Herrick Library
In the vibrant world of 1976 New York City, Meryl Streep and John Cazale's paths crossed beautifully as they were cast opposite each other in Shakespeare's
"Measure for Measure." At this time, Cazale was celebrated not as a superstar-elusiveness defined his fame-but as a uniquely gifted actor coveted by the era's most illustrious directors. The connection between him and Streep was electric and instantaneous.
By 1977, a turn of fate brought stark reality crashing down. During a theater performance, Cazale suffered a health scare and soon after received a chilling diagnosis: advanced lung cancer, which had spread throughout his body.
From then on, Streep devoted herself to Cazale's care with unwavering commitment and honesty, bolstering his spirits without sheltering him from the truth. Her roles in Germany for the Emmy-winning "Holocaust" and on the set of "The Deer Hunter" were not just professional commitments but lifelines to fund Cazale's medical expenses. She persuaded director Michael Cimino to prioritize Cazale's scenes, unsure of how much time he had left. Despite the production company's initial reluctance to continue with Cazale upon learning of his illness, Streep fought fiercely for his continued involvement, supported by the generosity of Robert De Niro, who helped cover treatment costs, and Al Pacino, who stood by Cazale during his initial chemotherapy sessions.
In March 1978, as his condition deteriorated further, Streep faced the heartbreaking inevitability of his passing. Clinging to him in those final moments, her strength wavered as she sobbed against his chest. It was then that Cazale, opening his eyes for the last time, comforted her with his final words: "It's all right, Meryl. It's all right."
Their story remains one of Hollywood's most poignant tales of devotion and love.
Meryl Streep, a woman of extraordinary talent and compassion, today celebrates her 75th birthday with an impressive tally of 21 Academy Award nominations and three wins.
Happy birthday to a true queen

A Cinder Family Ramble Post
Might be a... little confusing, I know
______________________________________________________________
Some Basic Info
The Cinder Family is a family of 4 adopted kids of a single mother. The 4 were orphaned due to a horrible house fire, though Emeliana was left in the fire and was luckily saved by a man accidentally using the teleporter on the poor infant. Though 3 of the kids got raised by Nilly, Emeliana was raised by the Ink Inc before escaping and being left in the Everwoods
______________________________________________________________
I'll start first with... Nilly Cinder
The adoptive mother of all of the Cinder's children. She always wanted kids, but due to her age and her never wanting a husband, she never got them. When she saw three of the Cinder siblings, she decided to adopt them and raise them. She was very kind to them, and made sure they were treated all fairly
She never adopted Emeliana though until Emmy was an adult, as she was thought to be dead. Nilly has a bit of secret hatred towards Gadget Gabe and the others who took Emeliana, but does not wish harm on them as she's a firm believer that everyone has good in them. Due to this, Nilly has unintentionally influenced Luke to join the Toppat Clan
______________________________________________________________
Luke Cinder
The oldest of the kids. He's secretive and insecure, constantly worried that people are constantly judging him. He wears a gray ribbon to cover his pink eyes, and only ever wears hoodies and jackets all because he's scared of how people will think of him. He tries to make himself seem tough, but nobody ever falls for it
Luke feels bad about his past, as he wasn't... a very good person back then. He used to hate his brother, as he blamed Jack for Emeliana being left in the house. Luke now understands how much he must of traumatized Jack from all of that, and how Jack was only 5 at the time. Luke is scared to reconnect with his brother, worried that Jack hates his guts now
Luke is the only one of the family who actually joined the Toppat Clan. He doesn't do much in the clan though, he's a pretty unmotivated person. He often gets jealous with others in the clan, always thinking they're much better then he is. When Luke does work, he often does it alone, not wanting to seem like a burden. Lexi tries to get Luke to befriend more clan members though
Luke isn't used to any affection, so he used to be very easy to manipulate and control. He then developed trust issues from how much he was just used, but he still gets controlled from time to time, most recent example was Lizzy Lavender. Liz was a C.C.C member just wanting to stop the Toppat Clan, but Luke trusted Liz with his life... until Lizzy mysteriously died
______________________________________________________________
Cinnamon Cinder
The second oldest. She's a sweetheart, who almost never judges. She always at least tries to understand people's point of view. She has pink eyes just like Luke's, but most think they are just contacts.
Pink eyes are a gift of the true goddess, Desiree. People with both of their eyes as a hot bright pink color are guardians, and the 13 Angels are supposed to tell guardians the secrets of their world and the future... of course the 13 Angels would never do that now, but a certain someone related to them did decide to expose Cinnamon to the future as Cinna was the last guardian, and Luke would of... reacted terribly to it if they were fair and exposed it to both of them
...the person never realized how poorly Cinnamon reacted to this info though. Cinna tried to tell everyone whenever she got a vision of the future, but nobody believed her. This slowly made me think she was crazy, and eventually just kept it all to herself. It was slowly eating her up though, as her visions slowly became true, but she couldn't do anything about it as even then... the only person who believed her was herself
Cinnamon tries to befriend everyone and live her life to her fullest... as one of her visions was that she was going to die at 28. She tried to avoid Henry Stickmin, as he looked familiar to the vision of her death... but since Jack still befriended Stickmin, she didn't know what exact day she would die on, and she didn't want to seem like a jerk... she hung out with Henry and Jack
______________________________________________________________
Jack Oliver Cinder
Jack, you probably have seen him before. He fixes helicopters, he's engaged to Charles, and he loves mysteries. He wanted to be a detective but he wanted to spend more time with Charlie instead
Jack actually knows the city is pretty corrupted and has some dark secrets hidden around. When he was a teenager, he really wanted to figure out what was wrong and stop it... but as he got older, he knew it would be much harder then he thought it would as a kid and just slowly tried to ignore it
He tries his best to get close to his older brother, especially after Luke apologized for his actions. Jack has never hated him, just hurt. He doesn't understand why Luke constantly avoids him though, even after time passed. Jack feels a bit isolated, but his friends help him get over the feeling
Whenever something goes wrong, Jack blames himself. This is because back when Luke was blaming him for Emmy's disappearance, Luke also blamed Jack for everything that went wrong. Jack is trying to learn not to blame himself first, but it's still hard for him. Luckily Jack has all the support he needs
______________________________________________________________
Emeliana Cinder
Emeliana, the youngest. She was just a infant when she suddenly got teleported away from her burning house. She never knew about the others until she was an adult. Instead, Emmy pretty much had to raise herself
She was originally in a place owned by a small company called the Ink Inc. She was locked in a room with two other girls, who I will leave unnamed for now. One girl just sometimes stayed over for the night, meanwhile the other and Emmy lived in this room. Emeliana eventually learned the Ink Inc did not have good intentions, so she was then determined to escape
Once she finally did... she couldn't save the others. This made her feel terrible about herself at first, since she just didn't have enough resources or time to get anyone else out
Once she grew up, she eventually meets a guy named Kid, who's friends with the rest of the family. Once Emeliana tells Kid that her last name is Cinder, Kid realizes Emeliana might just be the same Emeliana the other Cinders were mentioning. He then introduced her to the rest of the family
Emeliana... tries her best to connect with the rest of the family. It's hard though since her youngest sibling is 5 years older then her. They also didn't even grow up together, so they barely have anything in common.
She's still protective over them though, not wanting to be in a situation where she can only save herself again. Due to living most of her life alone without knowledge of laws... her morals are a bit messed up. To put it short, Emeliana has gone as far as murdering people to protect her friends and family
#they are very dear to my heart yet I still cant put any of it to words#henry stickmin#the henry stickmin collection#thsc#henry stickmin oc#henry stickmin au#thsc au#jack cinder#nilly cinder#luke cinder#cinnamon cinder#emeliana cinder

Celebrating the legacy of Matthew Perry
By Maritta Gostanian
Comedy Icon Matthew Perry Photo via CBC
It is with heavy hearts that we remember the life and career of Matthew Perry, who left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment upon his recent passing. The talented actor, known for his iconic role as Chandler Bing on the hit TV show "Friends", was found dead in a drowning accident at his Los Angeles apartment on Saturday, October 28, 2023, leaving a void in the hearts of his fans and colleagues alike.
Matthew Perry was born on August 19, 1969, in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He was raised in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, where his father, John Bennett Perry, was a well-known actor and model. This exposure to the world of acting from an early age undoubtedly played an important role in shaping Perry's own career.
Matthew Perry's mother, Suzanne Morrison, had a notable career as the press secretary to former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Her role as a press secretary was integral to the functioning of the Canadian government, where she played a significant part in managing media relations and communication during Trudeau's time in office. This background in politics likely influenced and shaped Matthew Perry's early exposure to the world of public life, contributing to his eventual career in the entertainment industry.
From an early age, it was evident that Matthew had a flair for comedy and acting. He attended Ashbury College and later pursued his acting aspirations, eventually studying theater at the University of Southern California. His journey into Hollywood was marked by hard work and dedication, which would eventually pay off in a big way.
Matthew Perry's breakout role arrived in the mid-'90s when he was cast as Chandler Bing on the immensely popular television series "Friends”. The show quickly became a cultural phenomenon, and Perry's portrayal of the sarcastic and lovable Chandler endeared him to audiences worldwide. For ten seasons, viewers couldn't get enough of his quick wit and memorable one-liners.
Perry's work on "Friends" earned him critical acclaim and numerous nominations, including an Emmy Award nomination. The show's enormous success catapulted him to stardom and made him one of the most recognizable and beloved actors of his generation.
Following the end of "Friends", Matthew Perry continued to make his mark in the entertainment industry. He appeared in various films and TV shows, including "The Whole Nine Yards", "17 Again", and "The Odd Couple". His versatility as an actor allowed him to tackle a range of roles and genres, from comedy to drama, showcasing his exceptional talent.
Perry’s last work was his memoir that he wrote, titled “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing” which was published almost a year ago, on November 1, 2022.
Perry was not only a gifted actor but also a writer and producer. He was involved in the creation and production of several television shows and films, including The Whole Nine Yards, demonstrating his commitment to the industry.
Although Matthew Perry is no longer with us, his legacy endures through the timeless moments he brought to the screen. He will forever be remembered for his unique comedic timing, memorable characters, and the joy he brought to millions of viewers.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and fans during this difficult time. Matthew Perry's contributions to the world of entertainment will continue to bring smiles and laughter to people for generations to come.
In memory of this extraordinary actor, we celebrate the life and work of Matthew Perry, a true talent and inspiration who will always have a special place in our hearts.

Jenny Slate latest comedy special should be getting “Best Comedy Special” for the Golden Globes 2025. An essay.
Well. I don’t know about you, nor do I know indeed what my readers did during the pandemic, but I believe we all know now* what Jenny Slate did. And while I was so disgusted and disappointed at how Ricky Gervais’s latest stand up comedy special won a golden globe and an Emmy last year, this year’s award should be gifted to this special and this comical genius. A little about where I was last January/February: VOMITING. I was literally supposed to be in the UK at multiple “Young Culture” concerts, one in London I think was on a BOAT, and sadly, I kept contracting the Parvo Virus which I get every March when the weather warms up but because it was such a warm winter last winter in upstate New York, I kept getting so very sick. And then I clicked onto my Amazon prime video account and watched this special for the very first time and was just enchanted. If it’s true in the TV world that in actuality Lena Dunham hates this woman because she’s so funny and talented, sorry creator of “Girls” I think Jenny Slate is funnier. She seems to have locked into a secret portal where her fans are younger, more alert, and totally tuned in! As heartfelt as she is about giving birth, it’s even more heartfelt to hear how she fell in love with her now husband who was actually living in Germany at the time they fell in love with each other. Her message about love sticks with me even to this day where she dismantles the every single day sexism where men think and say to women everywhere that their feelings don’t matter by telling them to “chill.” I can’t “chill” out truly with how truly amazing and awesome this comedy special really is. She really locked into such a positive message with me. She told her truth honestly with a heartfelt message about making sure to take care of your mental health. And while I assume telling my actual therapist that I love her after every zoom session would send me to jail, I appreciate her bravery and honesty in telling her audience how important going to actual therapy is for her and surely, her fans. Please consider a golden globe for this.

The Thing About Books (Part 3)
Yesterday I talked about how my use of books shapes the space in which I work. They're the framework embedded into this space in which I imagine, daydream, conjure, troubleshoot, brainstorm, iterate, problem solve, strategize, and create. It's a space with inspiration baked into it. As well as answers, new ideas, How To's, encouragement, mental block busters, creative energy and—
One more thing that I didn't realize until yesterday.
It has memories baked into it as well.

The first ones are from Small World Productions, a mug featuring a staff photo that sits on the shelf next to me. Also from Small World, an old photograph of a man on a unicycle balancing something like five or six basketballs. I used to have that photograph hanging on my wall at Small World (back when we had a physical location) because I printed the photo captioned with the following words:
SMALL WORLD PRODUCTIONS We juggle more than anyone we know.
Over on the countertop created by the two chest of drawers Kimmer painted to look like luggage piled up at King's Cross Station from the Harry Potter movies... is an art piece Kimmer commissioned for me from a friend of ours who's a musician and an artist. The piece in question? A keyboard and keyboardist made entirely of metal wire along with my name scripted out on the base of the piece. It's absolutely wonderful craftsmanship that always reminds me of the artist who made it.

Temporarily next to it's a postcard Linzy gave me for Father's Day. It's actually a little larger than a postcard, a piece of art that captures the Seattle Public Library Main Branch in a kind of surreal watercolor.
Now, my story doesn't actually connect with the Seattle Public Library but my friend Susan's does. And Linzy gave me this as a reminder of Susan who passed away a little over two birthdays ago.
It's a great present, by the way. It completely brings Susan into the here and now because she hated that place and its designer. She worked there, remember. It looked like a piece of art, of course. Was internationally recognized.
But.
She had to use the place as staff and, to put it politely, Susan felt that, functionally, it was a piece of junk. Something you show to people. Not something you actually, you know, use.
I love that watercolor of her old workplace invokes Susan's outrage. It brings her right. back. 😉

Another memory of Susan is a Batman/Arkham Asylum graphic novel she used to read. She was a massive DC fan. So I placed it on the shelf tower next to me for both the memory Susan and the creativity of its cover design.
On that same shelf, by the way, is the program for the most recent local Emmy awards, the 60th Anniversary of the Pacific Northwest chapter's awards ceremony for the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Our show, BrainWorks: Vision & the Brain, won an Emmy in the Children/Youth/Teens category and, because we won, it was a pretty epic night all around.
Of course the golden, hefty statuette on the shelf above is a pretty decent indication of winning along with the other few similarly gold and hefty awards arranged behind it. The true memory on that shelf, though, is the steel rocket that stands a little over an inch tall, a house plant amidst a stand of Redwoods.

The rocket used to have a clock face embedded into its front... over time, though, the clock face fell off. With or without, the rocket is a reminder of a shoot on which I worked as a production assistant in 2001. The show was the London episode of Smart Travels with Rudy Maxa. The rocket... is what I bought at the gift shop of the Science Museum after we wrapped shooting at that location. I think the producer gave us something like ten minutes in there and the rocket's what immediately caught my eye.
So I bought it.
I haven't done this yet but one thing that's going up on the wall is the framed poster from the October 2022 horror film production of "What Lingers" for Seattle's 48 Hour Film Project. And while of course those forty-eight hours are a hell of a memory, what are even more worthy of remembering are the director and writer of that short film (as well as the two before it) who are just the kind of professionals you wanna work with in this industry. No joke.
They're the best.
If you look semi-carefully, you'll catch a block of wood in the shape of a book titled Writer's Block. It reminds me of one of my favorite people who used to stare at the blank page or the blank screen for any kind of writing assignment at school and at home... and just totally freeze up.
I used to holler at her about that... just start writing, I'd say. Write anything. Get it on paper or on screen where you can deal with it.
That didn't work by the way. But walking around the neighborhood and talking about it sure did. And one day, when she was older, she returned from a vacation with that glorious block of wood.
For me. 😉

Okay then...
Then, courtesy of a friend of ours who's both an excessively talented musician and graphic artist, Volume II of his Crater on the Moon: Story of a Space Marine graphic/photo novel. The art and design, of course, is striking. But it's also a reminder of one of the hardest working creatives I know. 😊
So there it is. The space in which I work is inevitably as important as the work I do. Each informs the other, is probably a better way to say that. Books. Memories. Color. Shape. All contribute to how the space feels. All contribute to my creative energy.
And all contribute to the quality of work I do.

Rippling With One The Best Interviewers On The Planet: Carol Costello
Carol Costello is one the most authentic and trusted journalists in the modern era. Watching her conduct an interview is like a masterclass in how it should be done. Her warm and inviting presence always made her guests comfortable and willing, to tell the truth - no matter how difficult or sensitive the topic happens to be.
I swear, she is either Wonder Woman in disguise or was gifted her very own "Lasso of Truth" by her. She's that good at getting real, truthful answers from whomever she might be interviewing.
I've been a huge fan of Carol's for as long as I remember, and I still can't believe she said yes to come onto the show. She tells it like it is, and honestly, in a way we all need to hear it. Gosh, how I miss seeing her on television every day.
But she's creating even bigger RIpples today. Helping the next generation of journalists learn to think for themselves, question everything and pursue the facts, not simply strive for the likes, the views, or the notoriety. Why? Because journalists should never be part of the story. The good ones know how to tell it so that we understand and, hopefully, learn from it.
To that end, I am grateful to know people like Carol are out there shaping the hearts and minds of our future journalists.
Carol's Bio:
Carol Costello is an award-winning journalist and former anchor and correspondent at CNN and HLN. Her distinguished career as a local, regional, and national broadcaster spans three decades, covering a broad range of world leaders, events, and politics.
Carol serves as Special Advisor and Ambassador at LMU and teaches a broadcast journalism course in LMU’s journalism program. She also hosts “Carol Costello Presents: Blind Rage,” a true-crime serial podcast and “I Hate Your Generation,” a podcast series exploring the generational divide.
In 2019, Carol created Project Citizen, a special program at LMU that provides resources and mentorship for student journalists. Project Citizen’s core mission is to discover ways to ease the partisan divide in our country.
Carol also serves on the journalism professional advisory board at Kent State University in Ohio and is a mentor to its journalism students.
In 2001, Carol joined CNN as an anchor on “Headline News.” From 2002 to 2009, she anchored “Daybreak,” the network’s former early morning news program. And from 2012 to 2018 she anchored “Newsroom.” She also sub- anchored and was a political reporter for “The Situation Room.” Carol contributed to CNN.com Opinion from 2015-2017. In 2018, she hosted HLN's Across America with Carol Costello.
At CNN, Carol was at the forefront of some of the world’s most significant stories. She was part of CNN's Peabody Award-winning coverage of the Gulf Oil Spill, Hurricane Katrina, and the 2008 presidential election. She also reported on Pope Francis’ visit to the United States, the Boston Marathon bombing, the last space shuttle launch, the Ohio midterm elections, the shooting at Virginia Tech, the tsunami disaster in South Asia, the Russian school hostage crisis, and Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne. Carol interviewed four former U.S. presidents: President Jimmy Carter, President Ronald Reagan, President George H.W. Bush, and President Bill Clinton; and she covered five presidential inaugurations as well as the 1992, 2008, 2012 and 2016 presidential elections.
Before joining CNN, Carol worked at WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C., where she was an anchor and investigative reporter for five years. Prior to that, she spent three years at WBAL-TV in Baltimore. She began her career as a weekend anchor and reporter for WAKR-TV in Akron, Ohio, then moved to WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio, to serve as the station's principal weeknight anchor. Costello earned a degree in journalism from Kent State University in Ohio.
Carol's reporting has been honored numerous times, including a 1991 Emmy Award for a special on crack and cocaine, a UPI award, and several Associated Press awards. Comic Strip “Dykes to Watch Out For,” now a podcast Alison Bechdel’s comic strip Dykes To Watch Out For became a countercultural institution among lesbians and discerning non-lesbians all over the planet.
Now, Alison Bechdel’s Dykes to Watch Out For, the award-winning cartoonist’s iconic comic strip that ran from 1983 - 2008, was just released as an episodic podcast in partnership with Audible. The podcast is led by a queer cast in time for Pride Month. "Dykes to Watch Out For is smart and political and just great storytelling - like Charles Dickens meets Audre Lorde, with a dash of lesbian pulp fiction thrown in. I can't wait for the world to hear it," says scriptwriter Madeleine George. All episodes of Dykes to Watch Out For are available now, and more information can be found here. Second Season of Sacred Scandal podcast premieres
A sad commentary on modern times is that church scandals are too frequent and appear to infect multiple religions. One of the best such podcasts is Sacred Scandal, which was named one of Podtrac’s Best New Podcasts of 2022. Its second season focuses on Mexico-based megachurch La Luz del Mundo (Light of the World) and Naasón Joaquín García, a self-proclaimed apostle, who is currently behind bars after being convicted of sexually abusing girls from his congregation. He is currently serving a nearly 17-year sentence, but maintains his innocence. Host and investigative journalist Roberta Garza explores Naasón's control over a multitude of devotees, some of whom now describe their experiences in the church as "pure evil." In this true-crime series, survivors share stories about this powerful religious leader and the alleged sexual abuse that followed, many relating to minors. Tune in Thursdays.

2, 4, 13, 21, 29, 38, and 46 for Neria!
02. What is one of your character’s biggest insecurities? Are they able to hide it easily or can others easily exploit this weakness?
I think probably her fighting ability?? like yeah she was the Hero of Ferelden and all that but she has had exactly No formal battle training! it is especially around other / older Wardens, but I’d say she manages to keep it well hidden due to being a fancy Hero and all that (also she is super insecure about her ear being squared off and is constantly moving her hair in front of it to avoid people seeing)
04. What are their favorite traits about their lover? (one psychological and one physical)
her favorite not physical trait of Alistair is probably his sense of humor? it would be super easy for Alistair to have been angry and sullen 24/7 after Ostagar but he kept trucking through with bad jokes and it was a very nice change of pace for her after everything! favorite physical trait is probably his hair because it’s relatively fluffy and fun to play with
13. What are your character’s sleeping habits? Heavy or light sleeper? Blanket stealer? One that always rolls onto the floor? Pushes their lover onto the floor? Sleep talker or walker?
she is absolutely the lightest sleeper in the world!! girl is always on alert at all times. but also the biggest blanket thief; she is constantly found curled up with an entire blanket wrapped around her like a burrito. she doesn’t really move apart from that during the night so if Alistair wakes up on the floor, it was probably his own doing. Neria is much more of a sleep talker than walker, but it’s usually very mumbly and nonsense.
21. What is one of your character’s biggest fears? How would they react when dealing with this fear?
water!! Neria can’t swim and is too terrified to learn how. for the most part, she tries to stay away from anywhere that might force her into deep water, and if has no choice, she finds either a way around and finds a boat
29. What is one of the most courageous things your character has ever done for a loved one?
I’d say probably intending to sacrifice herself so that he didn’t have to. she didn’t necessarily see it that way, but she also didn’t really want to die / cut their time together short like that so it still fits.
38. What kind of weather does your character like? Cloudy skies, rainy days, sunshine, etc?
beautiful sunny day or raging thunderstorm, she likes them both equally and absolutely nothing in between
46. What is some random affectionate thing that your character always does to their lover?
well I already said she likes to play with his hair, but also she just really likes holding hands? I’d say she was pretty touch starved while in the Circle so just little things like holding hands is very very sweet and she will not be deterred by being in public
thank you emmy i lov u!!!!!

✄┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈«
Aaron T - The Weird Kid
You know those kids that just go up to anyone and start spitting some random or sometimes disturbing bs
Like,, kinda reminds me of the of the boy I sit next to in language study tbh
Mans will just start talking about the wirdest of things out of nowhere
Why tf are talking at me about thumbprint and how yours are superior ??
Why do you know that you can burn them off ??
Why have you researched how to organise a crime and get away with it ??
And why on earth are you telling me the details ??
You know,, that kinda stuff
Mans will just start talking, no brain to mouth filter needed
Not a single thought,, just a river of words
Mans was talking before he could even crawl
But he's also the type of kid to just get away with anything but he just has that charm yknow ??
Like,, he could be babbling away and being cheeky to a teacher and it's fine but if someone else even dares to breathe they're sent out
He's the class clown throughout his whole life
Nursery to graduation babeyyyy
Not book smart but street smart definitely
Common sense frrr
Most people wouldn't expect it because he always makes silly comments but T knows what he's talking about
I feel like he picked up an interest in music tech and producing when he was p young
Probably on some school music trip thay was only accepted to get more money out of parents but hey,, it provided T with his passion so..
He is the kid who shows you bugs out of nowhere
Yes he's very proud of them
He tried to keep a pet snail in his room once
That dream soon died in the form of a scolding lmao
Jesse - The Art Kid (obviously)
Never without a sketchbook or some form of paper
If his parents didn't put his art on the fridge he'd put it up himself, covering up all his grades and any other paper on there
Kinda cocky for a kid tbh
People told him often how talented he was and mans ran with it
Suddenly he's god's gift to the world
Golden child vibes tbh
People always asked him to draw them, you know, like how annoying people do
He would literally just ignore anyone who tried to interrupt his art time
Fair enough tbh, art time is art time for a reason,, not socialising time
Hhhhhh some people,, eh ??
Still though, mans did act p arrogantly about his skills
Somewhere along the way someone had to teach this kid the meaning on humility and confidence vs cockiness
So glad that it wasn't me tbh
You do not want a little grumpy Jesse on your hands
When I say fits of rage,, I mean fits of rage
I think Jesse, for the most part was a delight to be around, overly confident at times perhaps but fun either way
But if he was faced with any kind of conflict
Absolutely screamed his head off
I'm sorry but it's true
Also incredibly dramatic
Winning emmies by the age of 4
If he got any kind of sickness, whether it's a slight sniffle or a fever, he's gonna act like he's on the verge of death.
Seconds away from popping his clogs
He will make you feel bad if he doesn't get his way
Puppy eyes turn to daggers in milliseconds fr
He was definitely forced into classical music growing up and as he grew he explored other routes
He also calmed tf down as he grew too, thank all that is good
Mans cycled through many instruments and genres of music before landing on thinsg that stuck
Aaron Z - The Quiet Kid
Literally the stereotype of a quiet kid
He walked so all those quiet kid tiktoks could.. waddle ??
The funny thing is Z is not a quiet person at all really,, he just wasn't interested din any of their asses tbh
Tbh it normally amuses him when people always default to describing him as the quiet kid, or the shy kid, or the silent but deadly kid
Somehow people, at every school he went to, got the impression that he's a delinquent of sorts
That he'd fight anyone who dared to mess either him
Literally no sweetie,, he's just unnecessarily tall lmao
And also just doesn't care about you lmao
You know he does care about tho ??
His grandpappy !!
Being practically raised by him can do that to a kid
His most treasured possession is a harmonica his grandpappy got him with both of their initials engraved in it
Mans literally has a special case for it and everything
His grandpappy is the one who got him into music and all
Grandpappy used to be in a folk band back in the day, didn't you know ??
Z is so proud of his grandpappy, so happy to be related to him
Z wasn't particularly talkative when he was a kid,, he wasn't as quiet as people made him out to be but even around famy and friends he wasn't really loud
But he was, and continues to be, really expressive
In expressions, gestures
It's what makes him such a good dancer
And what makes dancing so fun for him
He can speak without words but instead with his body
Sometimes though, Z can get really passionate and talk for hours about something
Robaire - The True Golden Child
Is there anything little Ro can't do ?? Evidently not
The biggest teachers pet throughout his younger years istg
Probably got teased about it a little bit cause kids are cruel
But Ro literally aced every test he was ever given and it was hard to find an activity he struggled with
Basically a prodigy
I actually think that Robaire was a pretty shy kid though
Like,, people made him nervous and he had a bit of separation anxiety from his parents
Nursery was rough for all parties involved
Definitely a hard worker from day 1 but also a fair bit of a dreamer
Sometimes Ro's head would float up in the clouds and take ages to come back down
A-fucking-nother classically trained baby and he carried it on throughout his life
Mans has muscle memory with the same duration as an elephant
On that topic I feel like Ro has above average memory, maybe not photographic but definitely above average
He can remember practically every lyric he's ever learnt and every piano score he's learnt too
No one knows how he does it
You know the recorder lessons in nursery where you play hot cross buns or whatever tf
Ro somehow managed to make that cheap plastic shit sound good
Honestly astounding
Perfect pitch KING,, move out of the way charlie puth
His talent for it certainly helped but it wasn't the praise that made Ro decide music was his thing
It's the way he felt during his playing,, before he heard any praise about it..
Over the moon
Tae Young - The Cute Kid
Had everyone fooled from day one bro
Everyone's under the impression that he's an angel.. ha ha,, no
Not in any way, shape or form
It literally became a known thing that whenever he's get in trouble or introduced to someone new people would say
"Don't be fooled by his puppy eyes,, he's actually vicious underneath that expression.. "
No one ever heeds the warning until the damage is done
You were warned bro..
Grab a pair of listeners at the door and prepare to use them in the future
Tae was the trouble kid though, always doing things he shouldn't
And he'd always get away with it because of his adorable little face
By age 5 Tae had mastered the way of making any adult fold to his demands with just 1 look
A terrifying child to babysit,, can you imagine ??
I'd rather just be broke tbh
And that's coming from someone who has less than a fiver to their name lmao
Other kids his age would send Tae out as a back up plan to get teachers to derail from their lesson plan and watch above or something instead
Shit worked every fucking time
Pissed off every other class known to man
Another classically trained kiddo and he stuck with the violin
He just really enjoys it tbh
Maybe it's because he had a really good childhood teacher
That teacher instilled a passion in Tae bro
Talented teacher for that fr
Tae struggles with motivation tbh so habits are important,, especially those established when he was young
So yeah, that teacher was p incredible to Tae,, did something that Tae had never seen before lmao

Lucy Liu to star in Stephen King limited series Later
Blumhouse Television has landed the rights to turn Stephen King’s bestselling novel Later into a limited series star vehicle for Lucy Liu. Series creator Raelle Tucker wrote the pilot script.
Published in March 2021 by Hard Case Crime, Later centers on Tia, a literary agency owner who is raising her son Jamie alone and finds herself on the brink of professional ruin when her star author client dies before turning out the work that will make her agency financially whole. Jamie has the supernatural ability to talk to the dead, all of whom tell him the truth. This is very helpful when he talks to the dead author and feeds the contents of the book to his mother, who writes it herself and publishes it under the author’s name, to great success. But this gift can be used for more nefarious purposes. Tia’s police detective girlfriend figures out what the boy can do, and soon the youth gets over his head in the spirit world, as Danny Torrance did in King’s The Shining.
Tucker was Emmy nominated for her work on HBO’s True Blood: “Later is terrifying and touching and wonderfully weird — of course it is, it’s Stephen King. Adapting one of my favorite writers of all time, with an incredible partner like Blumhouse and the incomparable Lucy Liu, is a dream come true.”

I they he she we you turn only to discover the encounter
to be alien to this place.
Wait.
The patience is in the living. Time opens out to you.
The opening, between you and you, occupied, zoned for an encounter,
given the histories of you and you—
And always, who is this you?
The start of you, each day, a presence already—
Hey you—

Ode to Enchanted Light by Pablo Neruda
Under the trees light has dropped from the top of the sky, light like a green latticework of branches, shining on every leaf, drifting down like clean white sand.
A cicada sends its sawing song high into the empty air.
The world is a glass overflowing with water.
Consuelo Kanaga’s black and white photograph captures a dazzling, yet fleeting moment from everyday life. Three textured glasses cast shadows whose patterns are almost kaleidoscopic in effect. We can imagine Kanaga passing by her kitchen table, as she is brought to a halt to take a closer look at, and ultimately to photograph, the simple beauty generated by the play of light and everyday objects. The close-up scale of this image emulates the singularizing framing techniques deployed by Surrealist photographers, who also took parts of everyday life and blew them up in the photographic frame, thereby encouraging their viewers to look at life around us from a different angle. It is a way of saying: Here, take a closer look. Viewing the world with wonder, along with the joy that this act brings, are encapsulated in Pablo Neruda’s poem Ode to Enchanted Light. The speaker observes the way light passes through trees and creates enchanting patterns. He not only observes, but feels the beauty in the simple details of life, from the way light falls from the sky, to the sheen of leaves, to the buzzing of cicadas. Approaching life through such a hopeful lens evokes a glass-half-full perspective. In fact, the speaker is so hopeful that he believes “The world is/a glass overflowing/with water.” I think Kanaga would have felt the same way.
— Kirk Testa, Curatorial Intern, Photography Consuelo Kanaga (American, 1894-1978). [Untitled] (Glasses and Reflections). Gelatin silver photograph. Brooklyn Museum, Gift of Wallace B. Putnam from the Estate of Consuelo Kanaga, 82.65.25

Easter Wings By George Herbert
Lord, who createdst man in wealth and store,
Though foolishly he lost the same,
Decaying more and more,
Till he became
Most poore:
With thee
O let me rise
As larks, harmoniously,
And sing this day thy victories:
Then shall the fall further the flight in me.
My tender age in sorrow did beginne
And still with sicknesses and shame.
Thou didst so punish sinne,
That I became
Most thinne.
With thee
Let me combine,
And feel thy victorie:
For, if I imp my wing on thine,
Affliction shall advance the flight in me.
Easter Wings by George Herbet and Martin Bach’s flower vase from the Brooklyn Museum’s Decorative Arts collection reveal the interrelationship between form and function. In Easter Wings, Herbert strategically varies the line length to create an image that enhances the meaning of the poem; when you turn the poem on its side, it resembles the wings of a bird, of which are symbolic of the atonement of Jesus Christ. In doing so, the author is not only telling us his message, but he is showing it visually as well. Similarly, the vase takes the visual form of its function. Its floral design amplifies the meaning of the object, as the vase is meant to hold flowers. In both instances, we see how aesthetic properties of a work echo the meaning and function of the work itself.

I am the Earth (Watashi wa chikyu) [Excerpt] by Kiyoko Nagase, Translated by Takako Lento
I am warm, moist soil I am a single supple stalk I draw my life all the way up into corollas of wild berries on the roadside
I am amazed at a breast of water welling to flow into the inlet of a muddy rice paddy I am amazed at myself being hot steam blowing fire and sulfur up from the bottom of the great ocean, deep indigo. I am amazed at the crimson blood flow covering the earth’s surface in human shape; I am amazed that it swells as the tides ebb and flow, and gushes out monthly under distant invisible gravity … I am the earth. I live there, and I am the very same earth.
In the four billionth year I have come to know the eternal cold moon, my other self, my hetero being, then, for the first time, I am amazed that I am warm mud.
The vivid imagery conjured up by Kiyoko Nagase’s poem is beautifully visualized by Emmi Whitehorse’s painting. The emphasis on deep Earth tones and abstract corporeality in both the poem and the painting really creates an intense metaphysical link between the environment and the self.

Ocean Vuong’s “Seventh Circle of Earth” has persisted as one of the great, affective moments of poetry in my life since I first heard Pádraig Ó Toama’s gorgeous reading and discussion of it on his podcast, Poetry Unbound. I decided to pair Vuong’s poem with Mary Coble’s Untitled 2 (from Note To Self) because both works are urgently immersive into the violence and experience of LGBTQ people in the U.S., and for how each work uses text and physicality to address presence, pain, and erasure. Vuong’s poem is actually footnoted to a quote from a news article about a gay couple murdered in Texas. The page is thus blank, absent of text. The reader has to sink below the main stage, the accepted space of word and story, to find the voices of this couple and the depth of their story’s tenderness, eroticism, and utter devastation. Coble’s piece foils the structure and effect of Seventh Circle of Earth by taking what was subverted by Vuong—text and the narrative of violence—wholly to the surface. Her photograph captures her own legs tattooed without ink with the names of LGBTQ individuals victimized by hate crimes. I cannot help but think of Franz Kafka’s short story “In the Penal Colony,” in which prisoners’ “sentences'' are inscribed by the needle of a “punishment apparatus” directly onto their bodies. I was struck by how the curator’s note for this photograph describes Coble’s artistic endeavor here as “harrowing.” The needle in Kafka’s short story is indeed called “The Harrow”. The noun harrow is an agricultural tool that combs plowed soil to break up clumps of earth and uproot weeds and clear imperfections. The verb to harrow means to plague, and in the story’s original German the verb for “harrow”, eggen, is also translated as “to torment”. Kafka and Coble conflate these definitions of “the harrow” in their respective works: they use a needled device, like the true noun definition, as an instrument of torment because of someone else’s idea of punishment and justice. Here, violence is brought to the surface, intimate in as much as we are brought right up to the artist’s skin and into the presence of her and her community’s pain. Together, one can see how each creator physicalizes their respective artistic space to tell the stories of LGBTQ people, of what is tender and harrowing, below the surface and written into the skin.

To my daughter Kakuya by Assata Shakur
I have shabby dreams for you of some vague freedom I have never known. Baby I don't want you hungry or thirsty or out in the cold. and I don't want the frost to kill your fruit before it ripens. I can see a sunny place Life exploding green. I can see your bright, bronze skin at ease with all the flowers and the centipedes. I can hear laughter, not grown from ridicule And words not prompted by ego or greed or jealousy. I see a world where hatred has been replaced by love. and ME replaced by WE And I can see a world replaced where you, building and exploring, strong and fulfilled, will understand. And go beyond my little shabby dreams.
This poem is featured in Assata Shakur’s memoir, Assata: An Autobiography. It details her hope for a better world that her daughter can grow up in. This poem is positioned in the book when Shakur is facing increasing prosecution as a result of her activism and affiliations with the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation army. Being written more than 30 years after this picture was taken, the poem summons me to think about the trauma that many Black women face and how much of that trauma gets passed down to their children. The black and white photo of a mother and daughter provides a nice visual to the poem. “The image of a Black mother and child sitting on their luggage reflects the little-discussed history of segregated transportation in the northern United States. Through the 1940s, Penn Station officials assigned Black travelers seats in Jim Crow cars on southbound trains” (Brooklyn Museum). The photograph of train passengers waiting outside of Manhattan’s Pennsylvania Station especially echoes the verse “I don’t want you hungry or thirsty or out in the cold.” The overall optimistic tone of Shakur’s poem alters our relationship to the image as we imagine the mother pictured above hoping for the exact same things

Crunch. By Kailyn Gibson
I retch as a mass of sinew lies between my lips. The sensation is unbearable. Fortunately, the jar of flies has gone missing again.
Slowly, surely, and yet never sure at all, the quiet of buzzing rings through the in-between.
It is a symphony wrought from blood and bone.
Saliva drips from bleeding, hungry gums, And the crunch of glass echoes the grinding of molars.
If I proffered a sanguine smile, would masticated shards look like teeth? Would they gleam just as prettily?
The flies ring, and the rot calls.

Excerpt from Autobiography of Red A novel in verse by Anne Carson
7. If Helen’s reasons arose out of some remark Stesichoros made either it was a strong remark about Helen’s sexual misconduct (not to say its unsavory aftermath the Fall of Troy) or it was not.
8. If it was a strong remark about Helen’s sexual misconduct (not to say its unsavory aftermath the Fall of Troy) either this remark was a lie or it was not.
9. If it was not a lie either we are now in reverse and by continuing to reason in this way we are likely to arrive back at the beginning of the question of the blinding of Stesichoros or we are not.
10. If we are now in reverse and by continuing to reason in this way are likely to arrive back at the beginning of the question of the blinding of Stesichoros either we will go along without incident or we will meet Stesichoros on our way back.
11. If we meet Stesichoros on our way back either we will keep quiet or we will look him in the eye and ask him what he thinks of Helen.
12. If we look Stesichoros in the eye and ask him what he thinks of Helen either he will tell the truth or he will lie.
13. If Stesichoros lies either we will know at once that he is lying or we will be fooled because now that we are in reverse the whole landscape looks inside out.
This excerpt comes from Appendix C of Anne Carson’s Autobiography of Red, a novel in verse. A translator and classicist herself, Carson mixes fact with fiction in her unconventional retelling of the myth of Geryon and Hercules, beginning with a roundabout introduction to the poet Stesichoros. Autobiography presents a captivating example of recent Queer projects that take up Classical material as their basis. A fascination with the Classical past has pervaded our modern conception of sexual identity politics, down to the very etymology of the word “lesbian.” In this fascination, I see the same desire to capture Classical imagery as cultural heritage which has also pervaded American museums, albeit with significantly different aims. The fresco pictured above comes to mind, which passed through many collectors and was even purchased by the museum before anyone pegged it as a modern piece—not an original Roman fresco. John D. Cooney, a 20th century curator of our Egyptian, Classical, and Ancient Near Eastern Art collection, wrote that “the unclad and somewhat winsome charms of the lady [probably] diverted objective glances.” Both in the case of the fresco and Carson’s novel, the “unclad and somewhat winsome charms” of the Classical past shape and reshape our understanding of history.

Jaguar By Francisco X. Alarcón
some say dicen que ahora I'm now almost estoy casi extinto extinct in this park por este parque but the people pero la gente who say this que dice esto don't know no sabe that by smelling que al oler the orchids las orquídeas in the trees en los árboles they're sensing están percibiendo the fragrance la fragancia of my chops de mis fauces that by hearing que al oír the rumblingc el retumbo of the waterfalls de los saltos
they're listening están escuchando to my ancestors' el gran rugido great roar de mis ancestros
that by observing que al observar the constellations las constelanciones of the night sky del firmamento
they're gazing están mirando at the star spots las motas de estrellas on my fur marcadas en mi piel that I am and que yo soy always will be y siempre seré the wild el indomable
untamed espíritu silvestre living spirit vivo de esta of this jungle jungla
While the author of the poem speaks about animals, their words can also speak on behalf of the erasure of indigenous peoples in South America. Much like the jaguar, indigenous traditions and culture are very important to life in South America. Despite their marginalization, Indigenous peoples throughout the Andes used coca leaves to help with the altitude. The use and cultivation of coca are criminalized throughout most of South America despite it being essential to indigenous cultures. This vessel was used to contain lime which would activate the coca leaves. Much like the jaguar, indigenous traditions are also faced with endangerment despite being woven into the fabric that is Latin America. Through the opposite man and woman figures, the vessel shows the duality that is important to the Quimbaya people which is still relevant to Colombians today.

“Put your head on my Shoulder.” T.H. Imagine.
Summary: And what if after years of chasing each other like a cat and mouse, on a magical night where you two have to pretend to be a couple, you are finally able to say how you really feel about each other?
A/N: Hello everyone, after a while, and because a couple of people asked me, I wrote the second part of this story, "WANNABE", but you don't have to read it to understand this one. Anyway, I really hope you like it. Please give this story a lot of love. Thank you - V.
Tom Holland hates not being able to hate you.
The secret of his hate is because of your vanity, your selfish and free heart, your tender smile, the dimple that forms on your left cheek and your dreamy eyes that look at your grandfather as if he were the first man that you have ever loved — because you did.
Tom hates you because under a starry night, in the midst of a crowd of people and soothing music, you make your way through the mortals wearing a velvety wine red strapless dress that is lust itself on your body, black boots (velvet too) that cover you up to the knees and are as hot as hell, and your chocker - a gift from your father - from which a cross hangs, that is a tempting invitation for a sinner like him.
You are his angel with a devilish smile: but tonight, Tom Holland hates that, despite possessing all those qualities, and many more, he can only see the tenderness in your eyes when you look at your grandfather, or when you talk about him, and your smile that becomes as adorable as the face you were born with.
“You are like… staring much. Don't you think?" Harrison chuckles beside him, making Tom look away from you and your way of receiving the guests scattered around the place.
"Shit, Tom, if you turned a little faster you would look like the exorcist." Harry continues with the bland jokes, the same ones that make Sam, Harry and Tuwaine smile.
"Shut up." Tom hisses, taking a sip of his beer as he looks back at his group of friends.
But this story is not about you, but about Tom Holland, your lifelong neighbor, who you never had a conversation with other than to annoy each other, who you used to call idiot when nobody but him heard you, who used to laugh at you while filming Avengers: infinity war, endgame and finally, Spider-man: Far From Home, who used to hold your hand when you were kids because your parents were best friends, the same Tom who now drinks and look at you while you warmly greet each guest who has come to celebrate the birthday of the second man you know loved you.
“How is possible that you and he are the only two famous people at this party? What a waste of fame. Sigh." Danielle, your best friend whispers dramatically, just as you both stop at the bar to pick up more drinks.
"I'd feel sorry for you if you actually sighed." You give her a know-it-all smile, one that invites you to earn a playful slap on the butt from her.
"Please baby, I need to get something out of our friendship, otherwise this isn't working." She makes a gesture between her and you, the same sign that a boyfriend would make before breaking up.
"Tom Holland is here, why don't you go meet him?" You joke as you take the tray and walk with her by your side talking about Tom, although he was not news to you two.
"No thanks. But you can't deny that he looks sooo good. Only HE can look adorable and sexy at the same time. With those good boy eyes and wild muscles under his plain white T-shirt. Like Wow." She makes an expression of surprise, and the sound of an explosion as if her head cannot bear so much information that causes you so much laughter. "Seriously, please take that hottie. I'm sure your grandmother sent it to you as a gift."
You giggle, but your heart races at the thought of his breaking, because even though he and Hanna Johnson were never official, maybe he thought they were so. And after breaking up with her, he was back in London.
You suspected that was the reason behind his break.
"I would, but I don't love you as much as you think." You joke, just the moment you get to the table where your dear grandfather and your grandmother's friends, are, talking about you.
With just your young age, the world was a bright place for you, but here you are now, feeling how your best hits in movies escape from your hands like sand thanks to the endless words that spring from between the wrinkled lips of your grandmother's best friends, in the garden of your own house, adorned with crowded wooden tables and Christmas lights shining on you.
"Life goes by so fast, honey, you won't have that hot body for life." Says Mrs. Lee, who, at 89, still plays to be a 20-year-old from time to time. "You are... 24? 25? And you haven't had a single boyfriend yet."
"What do achievements matter if you don't have the most important thing, cutie?" Mrs. Russell asks, clicking her tongue in approval at her own words. “There are so many beautiful boys out there. My granddaughters want to be like you, but what will I tell them if you've never had a taste of real life? You are very innocent and that can work against you. You can have a little more fun while still being a lady, you know?"
Although in your cheeks bloom a crimson glow, you are aware that her words are offensive.
"You could tell the twins that you can be successful without fucking every chocolate-covered hottie that makes you an unseemly proposition." You murmur between tight lips, knowing well that the women in front of you need more than a whisper to hear certain truths. “I mean, you could tell Amy and Anne to work hard if they want to be actresses. The world is sexist, but, hey, here I am - besides, who says I don't have a boyfriend?"
You raise an eyebrow at your own question, winning several curious glances that seem to pierce you, even your grandfather, who stares at you more astonished than anyone.
"Really?" Mrs. Russell smiles, and her red lips gleam in the night. "And who is he?"
"Uh... well... I..." You giggle in a trance thanks to the bitter taste of the liquor that has your mind under a spell, leaving you completely blank and without a coherent response. "He is…"
"Hello, love." Tom presses his body against yours, suddenly, out of nowhere, wrapping his arm around your waist, so firm that you feel the pressure of his rolex in his left hand. "Hello, ladies. I heard you talking about me and I couldn't help but come and save my girl from this sea of questions about who her boyfriend is. You thought I wasn't real, huh? I know my angel here is a little shy about our relationship, but there is no problem, love, you know you can show off what a good boyfriend I am with whoever you want…"
Tom smiles and enchants the older women who smile back at him, as if they are in love with his youth and his face that has it all: his cloud-fluffy brown hair that is combed to the side and back, the sparkle in his gaze and the way he smiles, making the corners of his eyes crinkle, right down to that funny eyebrow that everyone finds adorable.
From his lovely face and well-defined jaw to his personality and strong English accent: Tom looked like an angel from heaven, perhaps the devil himself because how dangerous his charm could be.
"Oh honey, I didn't know you and Tom were dating." Mrs. Lee says, with an expression between happy and sad. "My granddaughters thought they might have a chance with you, darling."
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Lee." Tom answers, with a hint of happiness and pride in his voice. "I'm already taken and I like it that way."
"Yes!" You say with surprise when Tom gives you a squeeze with the hand that is holding you, shooting you a loving look to encourage you to speak. "I mean... He is."
You smile at the audience, especially at your grandfather and Danielle, who seem to have their suspicions.
"Tom..." Says Roy, your grandfather, who averts his narrowed eyes from your gaze to his, just to become the happiest person in the world as he clasps his hands in a sign of prayer. “I didn't know that you and my darling (Y/N) were together. I'm so happy! I'm sure my beloved Jules is happy too. Couldn't have asked for a better grandson."
"Thank you very much, Roy." Tom says, and it's so natural that he seems sincere. "I wanted to tell you, but we wanted to wait for our relationship to grow stronger."
"Yeah, you know that there are many actresses, blondes and blue eyes actresses who want to eat this hottie." You say and Tom laughs, nervous.
"Well, if you'll excuse us, I'd like to speak to my girlfriend in private for a moment."
Guiding you all the way, you and Tom turn around in the direction of the glass doors of your house that connect to the kitchen, breathing in the warm air from the warm walls the moment you two walk in.
"Good acting, Tom." You smile as you take a grape from the kitchen counter. "Not enough to win an EMMY but-"
"Ha. You are funny. But now I want to talk to you about something…” Tom smiles, too, giving you a devilish look, as if he never rests from it. "You owe me a favor, love."
"Of course not!" You defend yourself, nervous of the sudden change in the conversation. “You came alone like a prince on a horse. I did not call you. I do not owe you anything."
"Are you sure about that?" Tom laughs, as if he really enjoyed the moment. “Because I can go there and tell them the truth. I told you it's pathetic that you've never had a boyfriend. Besides, I wouldn't want to break Roy's heart, he looked so happy to know that his dearest granddaughter is with a good man."
You cross your arms, uneasy with the fact that you've never really fallen in love with someone, while seriously thinking about how happy, and probably relieved, your granddfather is to see that his granddaughter is with someone like Tom, who, despite of everything, yes, was a good boy.
"Okay. What do you want?"
"I want you to pretend to be my girlfriend in front of my parents."
You laugh inadvertently, although deep down you want to know if what was being said about Hannah and him was true.
"Why?"
"Everyone thinks Hannah dumped me and I don't want to see myself as a loser in front of my family and have them keep asking questions about her, it's exhausting."
"Eh, too late for that." You sigh, and Tom looks at you hopefully. "You were a loser long time ago, Tom, sorry."
"I hate you." Tom laughs.
"The feeling is mutual." You look away, and in a second you decide to contemplate why agreeing to be his fake girlfriend would be a bad decision, and why you would do it anyway. “Okay, but you know you can't call me darling. And stop looking at my chest, perv."
Tom laughs, looking up your chest into your eyes.
"It's not my fault you have worn that dress, but it seems that despite everything you didn't have a boy's body all this time. Congrats."
"Idiot."
Tom and his dreamy eyes smile as he opens the glass door for you, stepping aside so you can go out onto the field and do the performance of your life, which you discover would be more difficult than you thought as both of you approach the table on the left side of the place, where your family - made up of your mom, your dad and your older brother - are with his. So, in silence, and to let them be the ones to carry out the conversation of your supposed relationship, Tom remains standing next to you, leaving a space between Harry and him for you.
"Oh, yeah. Last night I got the iPad with the script of the Devil all the time." You say, to continue the conversation that your brother Ethan started, smiling at you. "My character falls in love with the poor and broken Arvin Russell."
Tom chuckles.
“And (Y/N) is a cold and rich bi—… girl who treats me like shit until I save her from her dad, the reverend and the crazy couple of rapists. I think you will play that role very well, love." And again and against your will, Tom brings you closer to him placing his arm around your waist, so close that his proximity makes you red.
So much so that you must place a hand on your exposed chest so that his gaze does not fall on that specific place.
“Bet your pretty ass I will. And then we will flee together into the sunset with a happy ending after killing 4 people."
His family and yours are too stunned to say a word, but just at the moment when you think they will shout hallelujah to the sky or to mention you are Frenemies, Dom makes a fist and a victory gesture with a loud yes!
“I told you they would be together before they were 25! pay me!" He yells happily at your dad, who, next to him, grunts as he searches for his wallet in his pants.
“Couldn't you wait until you turned 25, honey? It was only a few months away."
"What the hell?" Tom says, watching your father leave a $100 bill in Dom's hand.
"It's a silly thing they did when they were drunk." Nikki says, as she joins her hands in prayer just like your grandfather, just as happy as he. "It was about time you decided to be together."
"I didn't know that Tom could love someone other than Tessa." Your brother jokes.
"I didn't know anyone could love Tom more than Tessa." Harry jokes, but in his eyes you can see that part of him means it.
"Is this serious?" Your mom says, raising an eyebrow.
"It is." Tom says, and his voice is as solemn as his expression. "Mom, Dad, everyone, I want to marry this woman... someday."
Along with the expressions of happiness and surprise, theirs and yours, your brother breaks the silent while looking like a hawk at Tom.
"Her favorite color?"
"Blue." He answers, without missing a second.
"Favorite book?"
"Jane Austin's Pride & Prejudice."
"Coffee, hot or cold?"
"It depends on the season."
"Seafood?"
"Banned forever."
"Very well, you have my blessing to marry my sister." Your brother nods, like a wise old man, while you, foolishly, think of two things, how quickly he responded, and how well he knew you.
"Just that?" You question, partly offended. "Why better not give him 2 cows for my honor?"
"That's a good idea." Tom responds. "We already have a chicken so..."
You snort just like the idea of Tom buying a chicken just because there were no eggs in the store is spinning in your head, but at that very moment, your words die on your lips as Rose, your aunt and your grandfather's eldest daughter, has taken the command of the party to indicate that the most important thing of the night has arrived: the dance that your grandfather and grandmother used to have, when she was still alive.
Like a fairy tale, every couple in love gathers in the center of the garden while the song “Put your head on my shoulder” by Paul Anka begins to float in the London air that is suddenly flooded with love, to such an extent point that threatens to drown you in it.
"Would you like...?" Tom is nervous, and lets the question hang in the air.
Your breathing becomes agitated, it becomes irregular as your parents and his join the other couples, wild as your heart that beats with the fierceness of a caged animal seeking freedom.
You want to say no, but the crystallized look and happiness that you achieve in your grandfather's eyes are the impulse you need to avoid breaking his heart with the truth.
"Okay."
Tom takes your hand gently and guides you to the makeshift dance floor, placing his hands on your waist to imitate the elders.
Inside and out, (Y/N) (Y/L/N) was still as beautiful as the first one he saw you when you were children; but of course, now as adults, everything was different: you were stronger, more mature, more self-confident, wilder and indomitable. But Tom didn't judge your insecurity, he never did, because you had trouble trusting in a future love that could be so real that it seemed a fairy tale - like the ones your father had read to you before bed - as deep as Roy's pain at losing his beloved Jules.
And it is then that Tom realized everything.
That's why you didn't want to be called darling, just because your grandfather used to call his great love that way. Why you never had a boyfriend. Of why you had never wasted your love giving it to someone you knew you would never have a future with, just the way he did with Hannah. Of why you have never been able to give your sincere love to someone else.
Because we're so hopeful at the beginning of things, it seems that there is only one world to gain, nothing to lose, and suddenly, we lose someone whom God knew we deeply love, leaving us with nothing but a void where there must be a beating heart.
And that's when the applause dies down, the silence overwhelms you two, time runs out and life forces you to look into each other's eyes to wonder, without words, why you did the things you did and the things you didn't.
"I'm in love with you."
"Don't."
You say the words at the same time, although they are not the words you expect to hear from the other.
And then you smile sadly, slightly because you no longer have the strength, because your body seems numb from the little alcohol you have drunk and because it seems that the world is leaning to one side with his love confession, but you also smile because Tom still has that adorable face, and a funny eyebrow that you were dying to fix. Just for fun. Just to touch him.
"You're not in love with me, you're just sad about Hannah." You whisper, desperately waiting for the song you have loved for so long to come to an end so you can flee from his arms.
"No, you don't understand, now I can see that it's you, it's always been you." Tom hates himself because he can't put his feelings and his memories into words, but his hands secure you in your place so that you don't leave, not before he can tell you a little of what he was hiding in his mind. “Since we were children I held your hand: in kindergarten, on the way home, to the park around the corner. I don't know why it is now that I can see you, always there in every step of my life, being my best friend even when we said words to annoy each other. I don't know much about love, but I know that it should make you feel good, give you peace, and that's what I feel with you. I feel at home with you, no matter where we are. And we have been in several countries away from home, but you feel like my home. And I am in love with you, and I only ask that you give me the opportunity to love the way you deserve to be loved."
You have a world of words, sharp as a knife, that could kill his confession, but against all, and because this is the first time you feel in love, you lift your hand from his shoulder, a little shaky, to brush your thumb against his brow, soft, delicate and loving, as a lover should be when loving someone for the first time.
"I still hate you."
Tom smiles and you both share a look of hope, staying in the foreground, just to be a participant in the main scene of this beautiful love story that would only be the beginning of a long night in the bright sky of your lives, the one that is like a painting made of watercolors, colors that spill over each other just to create a perfect combination, just like you two together in the eyes of any art lover.
"Not me, no. I love you."
And after that, Tom leans down a bit, feeling the softness of your lips in a real kiss, the first of many to come.

‘Loki’ star Gugu Mbatha-Raw on the multiverse: ‘It’s going to be mind-blowing’
For Gugu Mbatha-Raw, entering the Marvel world with the latest Disney+ series “Loki” was an unexpected class reunion.
“I knew Tom [Hiddleston] previously because we were at drama school at the same time,” Mbatha-Raw, 38, told The Post — referring to London’s prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, which she graduated from in 2004.
“So, there’s a lovely sense of the circle of life and shared experience when you get to work with an actor that you’ve known for a long time,” said Mbatha-Raw, who is based in London.
The two Brits have kept in touch intermittently, she said, but “Loki” brought them together.
“We’ve seen each other on and off over the years at various events. It was always lovely to run into him and catch up … it’s fun as well because [‘Loki’ co-star Wunmi Mosaku] was at the same drama school, too. And we filmed this during 2020 — which was obviously a mad, mad year for everyone. So, to have that shared experience and old college friends with you on this uncertain journey was very comforting.”
Now on Disney+ (new episodes out Wednesdays), “Loki” follows Loki (Hiddleston) circa the 2012 “Avengers” movie — when the character’s main goal is still world domination and events from subsequent Marvel movies haven’t happened to him yet.
This Loki finds himself brought before the Time Variance Authority, a bureaucratic organization that monitors and tries to prevent disruptions in the timeline. TVA employees include analysts such as Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson), “hunters” such as B-15 (Mosaku) and judges such as Ravonna Renslayer (Mbatha-Raw).
“She’s a powerful woman,” said Mbatha-Raw of her character. “She’s had a military background. She started off as a hunter and worked her way up to being a judge, the most powerful woman in the TVA. For me, thinking about that background was interesting; working on the physicality of somebody that has high status, but also knows how to move and fight. Renslayer is definitely on equal footing — if not superior footing — to most of the men in the show.”
This is particularly true for Mobius M. Mobius, since Renslayer works closely with him as his tough-but-fair boss.
“Owen is such a gifted actor especially with comedy, it was a delightful fun dynamic to be the straight woman to his mischief and his maverick ways as an agent,” she said.
When Renslayer is impatient with the roguish Loki, Wilson’s character has a soft spot for him. “It was fun, that push and pull — because Owen’s character is also trying to get a bit more leniency out of Renslayer, as far as Loki is concerned,” Mbatha-Raw said.
Mbatha-Raw rose to prominence starring in the 2013 period drama “Belle” and the Emmy-winning 2016 “Black Mirror” episode “San Junipero,” about two women who meet in a simulated town. She’s also appeared on “Doctor Who” and the Apple TV+ talk show drama “The Morning Show,” but “Loki” marks her entrance into the superhero sphere.
She said she had to study up to join the world of caped crusaders.
“I was obviously aware of the films and the huge influence that they’ve had on popular culture, and I was aware of Loki and that character. But I did have to do some catching up in terms of watching the films … as I was sort of starting a bit more from the beginning,” she said.
“I haven’t had much time to watch that much, because I’m busy making TV!”
Her whirlwind career is showing no signs of ebbing, as she’s currently working on two more high-profile projects in addition to “Loki.”
Upcoming shows include “The Girl Before” — a four-part psychological thriller with David Oyelowo — and another called “Surface” for Apple. “I’m really excited about that,” Mbatha-Raw said.
But she can’t wait for fans to dive into the mind-bending fun of “Loki.”
“The TVA is a whole other side of the multiverse that hasn’t been seen before onscreen,” she said. “So it was exciting to see that there really is just so much potential and so many layers to the universe. There’s so many surprises and twists and turns in store — I’m excited for people to discover them. It’s going to be mind-blowing.”
