because it's also like, I think, Paul is kinda easily controlled. He does his useless job, doesn't ask questions, and that's it. He was cloned a million times because he's a nothing mindless drone at his heart and I think that's why Pokey didn't think he'd be a meaningful opponent until he found out that Paul hated musicals. Emma is the opposite, she's hard to control, she does her own thing and is proud of it. Paul was focused on first because he was meant to be the easy one and once he was taken over, Emma became the focus. In this essay-

"He pines after a cute little barista, isn't that worth a show stopping fiesta?" So we all know that Emma is worth the world, but the important thing here is that she is not worth singing about yet! Paul has a crush on her, yeah, but it's not enough for an "I want" song or a romantic ballad.

It's like the Hive is scrambling for anything about Paul that's significant enough for a musical number and Emma is the closest they could get, but she's just not that important to him. Paul is too real for musicals, to him a crush is just a crush.

It's not until they actually spend time getting to know each other that he admits he "wants there to be" "something more," which leads into their twisted love song "Inevitable"

hey melissa ending fix-it but paul's been slowly recovering with emma when he meets pete. pete, whose brother was murdered in front of paul. pete, whose brother paul likely blames himself for the death of. pete, who looks incredibly similar to his brother. pete, who doesn't have a brother anymore. and paul is thrown straight back into his mindset directly after ted's death, and pete is grieving and concerned, and emma doesn't know what to do. angst ensues.
