“Malory Towers” s3e5 (2022)

One of the very best episodes.

My favourite aspect of the show is the hero-inside-an-unjust-system element. They don't go there too often, wisely not overusing the trope, but when they do go there, it tends to be great. Stories like this one showcase Darrell Rivers as one of the very best (flawed) heroes on TV. Watching her rage against the machine is always a delight.

In Miss Johnston, the new headmistress, we really have a villain can all love hating. Emily Piggford is excellent and she gets some terrific material here.

The second half of the episode gave prominence to a sports-centric storyline and gave Gwen some moments to shine. This really was an episode firing on all cylinders. Flawless.

Malory Towers is now at number 17 on my Top 43 TV Shows of 2023 list.
