The sun broke through the curtains, pulling me from my slumber. Embry left the window open throughout the night, making the air within our shared room frosty and bitter; I sunk deeper into the mattress and pulled the thick duvet under my chin. My eyes strained against the light, and I gave a sort of whining noise as I stretched my legs, entire body aching with the movements. A pair of warm arms tightened around my waist and Embryâs nose pressed into my neck as he hugged me closer to his half-asleep frame.Â
My eyes watched the gentle fall of the snowflakes, a small smile breaking across my lips as I gingerly ran my hand along the arm that held me. âLook, babe. Itâs snowing.â I whispered quietly; the gentle lift of his chin was followed by a slight hum, then a lingering kiss was pressed to my jaw. It was mornings like these that I wanted to freeze in time forever. Wanted to remain in bed all day with Embry and his warm embrace. âI have to get up.â I lamented, my breath faltering into a laugh as Embry groaned in reluctance.Â
I spent several minutes trying to coax him into letting me go â it ended with multiple kisses and disapproving mumbles. I had an early shift at the diner, and needed to give myself ample time to get to Forks so that I wasnât late. I rushed through my shower, slipping on two pairs of socks to keep the cold tiles from bothering my feet. Once I was satisfied with my hair and no longer looked lifeless, I returned to the cold bedroom to see Embryâs frame spread across the bed frame. He laid on his stomach, hugging his arms around the pillow his head was resting on. The bed was a King, and still, he almost looked too big â as though he were sleeping on a double.Â
I pressed my cold lips to his back, evading his desperate fingers as they searched blindly for me. âIâll see you at Emilyâs tonight â I promised her weâd help out.âÂ
âYour keys are in the ignition.â Embry grunted in response.Â
I expected the Jeep to be buried under a mountain of snow, but instead it sat in the driveway cleared. Embry must have slipped out while I was showering to clear it off for me - and had even started the heat inside. I shivered in the warmth of the vehicle, thanking all the Gods for my boyfriend before I pulled the car into drive and sped off down the road towards the highway out of town.Â
It took me an extra twenty minutes to get through the snow banks; the plows hadnât come through the reservation yet but I was certain the drive home would be less daunting. I parked behind the diner, rushing through the backdoor. I was shrugging out of my jacket just as the clock ticked to 7:00 AM.Â
âMorninâ chickie!â Debbie chirped from the front counter, her red hair curled uniformly away from her face.Â
âMorning.â I smiled, kicking my boots off at the door to pull my sneakers on. âWhereâs Angie?âÂ
Speak of the devil, and the devil shall appear. The short-haired girl rounded the corner, supporting the tray with her hip. I could tell Angie had recently buzzed the undercut, leaving the three inches up top to grow out a little more. I smiled wider, catching the cloth that was tossed in my direction.Â
âHey, nugget.â
âHowâs the rush?â I asked.
âNot much of a rush,â Angie sighed, sorting the dishes off her tray. âDamn snow.âÂ
I bumped her hip, rolling the sleeves up on my white blouse to wash my hands. âDonât knock the snow.âÂ
âWhatâs so great about it? Itâs cold, itâs wet, it gets ugly when exhaust and cars run over it all the time.â
I rolled my eyes. âIt means Christmas is coming.â I rinsed the soap from my skin, and flicked my fingers at Angieâs face, water droplets pelting in her direction. âPlus, it means my birthday is almost here.âÂ
Angie was about a year older than I was. When I first started working at Shakerâs, Angâs hair had just reached her chin, was parted in the middle and was a warm chestnut brown. After her break up, she buzzed the undercut and kept it short, just long enough to grab a decent fistful whenever she was stressed. Her teeth sat in perfectly straightened rows â many thanks to the braces she endured in her teen years. Her pale skin made me envision red sunburns in the summertime. She was simple, but still pretty. It was her firecracker attitude that made me fall in love with her.Â
âThereâs somebody out there asking for you.â Angie stuffed her towel into the back pocket of her black jeans. âAll morning - showed up right when we opened.âÂ
I pulled my brows together, tying my apron around my waist hastily as I wandered towards the front. The girls were right â the diner was essentially empty, except for the two occupied booths in the corner. There was a man that sat at the front counter, his hands wrapped gingerly around a cup of coffee and his hat pulled down over his eyes. I grabbed one of the breakfast menus as I wandered towards him.Â
âSpecial for the day is blueberry pancakes. Trust me, youâll want to try âem if youâre just passing through.â I mused lightly, sliding the laminated booklet in front of him.Â
When he looked up, I froze. I would have recognized that petulant stare from a mile away; his brown orbs now darkened into a sort of black, his mouth pulled back into a slight grimace. I braced my hands on the countertop between us, trying to keep the bad taste from rising completely up my throat.Â
Maddox looked as though he had been through hell and back a few times. I couldnât find the heart to feel any sort of sympathy.Â
âNot hungry,â he said finally, pushing the menu away with the tips of his fingers.Â
I watched him carefully for a moment, assessing the way his shoulders hunched forward, the way his movements seemed controlled and careful. He was trying to make himself small, so much different from how he used to be.Â
I had loved him once. Prior to the date-party, prior to my unhappy ending, I had believed him every time he said heâd marry me someday, that heâd make me happy. Heâd take care of me. That is what I had counted on - being with someone that could protect me from any sort of danger, although I had never fathomed what that danger could possibly be. His honey-brown orbs used to make my head spin, the way he carried himself made me feel as though he was an unstoppable force of nature.Â
When he was hanging out with my brothers, he spent fight nights stepping into the shoes of some stereotypical douchebag, trying to put on a show to get the cash flowing. He knew people would never bet against him if no one ever landed a solid swing or two on him. He never wanted me to be there, mentioned something about it being too crowded, too busy. I never listened, obviously. Travis always kept good on his promise to sneak me in, but always failed to make sure I didnât go missing.Â
âWhat are you doing here?â I asked curtly, pulling the menu from the countertop to drill holes into his forehead.Â
Maddox lifted his chin and sighed, his eyes wandering just above my head for a split second before he cracked a small half-smile. âStaying with some friends in the area,â he lied, cocking his left brow, âwhat are you doing here? Donât you live on the reserve?âÂ
I pulled my brows together. âHow did you know?âÂ
His eyes rolled. âBecause you told me where you were born, love.âÂ
âDo not,â I seethed, leaning forward to get in his face, âcome in here and pretend like you know me.âÂ
âBut I do know you.â Maddox pressed, leaning back away from me quickly. âYour favourite colour is purple. You absolutely love ketchup even though itâs awful for you. You canât stand the rain yet you canât seem to find yourself anywhere sunny and warm to live. Youâd never admit it outloud, but Trenton is your favoured brother -â
I held up my hand, having heard enough. I was certain he could go on and on. We had spent the majority of a year together as an item; being young had meant we spent more time in private than at house parties. The first time I agreed to go to a frat party was only because he was a freshman and had begged me to come along. Maddox was on bitch duty, had to make sure everyone had a drink in their hand, and had to be the one to clean up the house once everyone had left. Before that night, I thought I had met the one, thought I knew what it was like to be loved.Â
If only I had known a love like Embryâs, I mightâve been able to save myself from the months of nightmares and internal torment.Â
I moved down the countertop, wiping the space at the end of the counter where my regular usually sat. He only came in Tuesday mornings, right before his shift at the department with my father. My lips broke into a slightly forced smile as Charlie took his seat, shrugging out of his coat.Â
âRegular black?â I asked as I pulled a mug from the dishwasher.Â
âYes maâam,â he beamed; his face was old and weary. TJ talked about Charlie quite a bit, with him being the Chief and all. When I finally met him, we clicked and he swore up and down heâd only come in for breakfast or dinner on the nights I was working. He always tipped generously, and always left smiling. Last I heard, he was dating Sue, Seth and Leahâs mom.Â
I glanced at Maddox from my peripheral vision; he had removed his hat, light brown hair pulled back into a small bun. He was watching me, assessing my movements much like I had been watching him earlier. I tried not to let my annoyance surface, poured Charlieâs coffee and tossed the empty canister into the sink.Â
I set the mug in front of Charlie, leaning against the countertop. âThe specialâs blueberry pancakes.â I said cheerfully, browsing through the laminated pages of the menu. âBut, you have yet to try any of the omelets â which is a sin, because theyâre so delicious.â I mused, eyes scanning over the page.Â
âHow about just a big stack of bacon.â I glanced at him with slight disapproval. âWhat? Look at the crap I gotta deal with today, I deserve some pig meat.â
âOnly if you get eggs with it.â I finalized, standing up straight.
âFine.â Charlie replied bitterly, taking a sip of the steaming coffee. âPoached.âÂ
âBacon burnt to a crisp?â I asked, slipping the menu back into its place under the register. Charlie nodded.Â
Customers trailed in one by one over the course of the next two hours, each seated with heaping mountains of warm breakfast filling their tables. Maddox had yet to finish his coffee, but I was certain it was ice-cold by this point. When I walked past him for the umpteenth time, I swiped his mug off the countertop, dumped the contents in the sink and poured him a fresh cup.Â
âYou didnât have to do that.â He said once I replaced it in front of him, leaning back on the stool when I neared. I pulled her brows together first in confusion, then annoyance.Â
âYes, I did.â I grumbled, wiping the counter around him. âMy boss does keep an eye on me, and the customers.âÂ
Maddox pursed his lips together, settling his hands around his mug again, âYouâre doing a good job.âÂ
âDonât.â I hissed, turning to pile the empty and used mugs into the dishwasher up front. When I turned around to restock the napkin dispenser, Maddox was wearing a smug smile. His smugness was nothing like Embryâs - and that made me want to launch my fist right into his nose.Â
âWould you prefer it if I left?â He asked.Â
âYes, actually,â I braced my hand on the counter and the other on my hip, trying to keep my face straight and emotionless, âbecause I donât know why youâre here.âÂ
âI wanted to see you.âÂ
I clenched my jaw together tightly, lifting my eyes from his to scan the restaurant. Charlie was pulling his jacket over his uniform, offering me momentary relief.Â
âI never wanted to see you. So, I think itâs best if you leave.â I pressed, hard eyes cutting back to the unwelcome visitors before I pushed away from the counter to meet Charlie at the till.Â
Another hour passed; another hour where Maddox waited patiently, where his coffee remained untouched, another hour where I could feel my irritation building. I pushed through the doors behind the kitchen, wandering over to where Angie sat on a pile of skids. I sat down next to her, leaning against the wall for support.Â
âStill there, huh?â Angie asked with a laugh, working her fingers through her cropped hair.Â
âMhm,â I sighed, fixing my ponytail. âI wish heâd leave.âÂ
âTell him off.â
I rolled my eyes, âDonât you think I havenât tried that, Ang?â My friend tossed me a sheepish smile over her shoulder, shrugging meekly. âDebbie would be pissed if he left a bad review.â
âWould he leave a bad review?âÂ
I thought about it for a moment. âProbably. Just to spite me.â We exited the kitchen together, working to clear the tables on our respective halves of the floor, quickly wiping down tables and restocking condiment containers. By the time lunch pulled around, I opted out of walking down the street to buy lunch. I tossed my apron onto the skids in the back, and walked out into the dining area, around the counter with my food.Â
Maddox watched me take a seat in one of the booths. Much to my dismay, he slipped off his stool, bringing his cold coffee with him.Â
I watched him settle into the booth across from me; I began pouring the syrup across my two slices of french toast, trying not to pay him any mind. We sat in silence for five minutes before he spoke up, âIâm sorry, did I do something wrong?â
I dropped my fork on my plate, folding my arm., âThatâs funny.âÂ
âWhat is?â
âYouâve got a lot of balls, Maddox.â I spat, cutting through the second piece. âTo show up here and pretend like I donât have every reason to completely hate you. The only reason why Iâve been playing nice is because this is my job, and I have to be nice.âÂ
Maddox leaned forward. âAnd if we werenât here?âÂ
âI wouldâve kicked you in the fucking balls three hours ago.âÂ
He laughed, mainly to himself, folding his hands on top of the table. âStill feisty, itâs adorable.âÂ
âYeah,â I growled, âmy boyfriend seems to think so, too.âÂ
âIâm sure he does.â Maddox â for the first time that morning â took a small sip of his coffee, face even, smooth and emotionless. âEmbry, isnât it?â
I paused again, eyes burning holes into his, jaw clenching shut again. âHow do you know his name?âÂ
âAre you happy?â
I shook my head, pushing my plate away from me. âDammit, Maddox.â I growled, leaning back in the booth. âHow do you know so much about my life here? I havenât seen you since ââ I stopped talking, pursing my lips shut tightly. I watched the slightest hint of remorse flash in his dark eyes. âYou need to leave.âÂ
âAinsley.â
âNo. You donât get to show up here and pretend like nothing happened â like you have a right to know me.âÂ
âYour friends arenât the safest people to be around, Ains.âÂ
âWhat friends?â I asked bitterly.Â
âJacob, Embry â the rest.â His tone was suggestive as he leaned forward. âTheyâre walking timebombs, love, you gotta know thatâs not safe.âÂ
âBetter than a bunch of rapists ââ
âI am not a rapist.â He retorted, his eyes flashed quickly and his voice was low and raspy. The sudden change in his demeanor sent a shiver down my spine, causing the hairs on my arms to stand at full attention.Â
My tongue moved slowly around the words. âNo. Youâre just an accomplice, which is just as bad.âÂ
Maddox was moving quickly then. He slid out of the booth, reaching into his wallet for a twenty. He slapped it on the table, his nostrils flared angrily. âFor the coffee.â
âCoffeeâs two-fifty ââ
âThen consider it a tip.â He growled, pulling his hat back over his head. Maddox paused for a brief moment, then inhaled deeply and bent down quickly, pressing his lips to my hair â which I tried to refrain from recoiling from. He then turned and appeared to glide towards the front door, walking into the white storm with his hands shoved deep into his pockets. I moved my eyes back down to the twenty on the table, then looked up to meet Angieâs eyes, sinking down into my seat with a sense of defeat washing over my body.Â

I parked next to Emilyâs house, cursing myself for not thinking to pack an extra set of clothing for after my shift. The baby shower was tomorrow, and I promised Emily I would stop by after I finished at the diner to help set up. There were sisters from her hometown that would be driving in, along with the entire pack plus their significant others, and some extended family. Embry and I had gone halfsies on adorable onesies. One read âYou People Are Hugeâ (my choice) and another read âWatch your language asshole, Iâm a babyâ (Embryâs choice, unfortunately).Â
I slipped my boots off at the door, leaving my jacket draped over one of the kitchen chairs. âYou shouldnât be doing that.â I chided, moving to help Emily down from the mini-ladder. The kitchen had been overfilled with streamers and balloons carefully and strategically hung from banister to banister.Â
âMy husband wouldnât help.â She growled, resting a hand on her swollen tummy.Â
Sam popped his head out from around the corner of the living room, his thick brows pulled together. âYou yelled at me and told me you could do it yourself!âÂ
âYouâre not supposed to believe me!â Emily hissed, shoving the leftover garbage into the white bag that sat in the middle of the table.Â
Embry came up from the basement with Jared on his tail; I felt my chest lighten, hands instinctively reaching forward to him. âWarm.â I mumbled happily, wrapping my arms around his stomach, pressing my cold hands against his bare back. He leaned down with a quiet chuckle, pressing his lips to my hair.
And then shoved me away quickly, arms gripping my shoulders tightly.Â
âOw.â I whined quietly, trying to squirm away from his grip. âEmb, ease up.â
âYou stink.â Embry said definitively, his eyes hard and cold.
I stopped moving, feeling the heat rise in my chest. I looked around the room uncomfortably, then lowered my voice. âNo, I didnât have time to go home and change, Iâm sorââ
âNo, shut up.â He growled, pulling me into him again, returning his nose to my hair. Embry inhaled deeply, pulling his face away with a look of disgust before he looked over his shoulder, âSam, câmere.âÂ
I shoved his arms away from mine, hands rubbing over the skin tentatively, hoping that it wouldnât be too heavily bruised. I planned on wearing a short-sleeved dress for the shower. Sam put his empty wrappers into the garbage, then leaned over the chair to sniff the air around me.Â
His face hardened, much like Embryâs had, a certain distaste crawled over his features as a visible tremor rolled down his spine. Emily watched from behind Embry with a confused expression, carefully keeping close eyes on Samâs frame. âThatâs the scent.â Embry finally said, taking a step away from my frame.Â
âTheyâre in Forks.â Jared said quietly from his seat on the stairs.Â
âWhat are they doing in Forks?âÂ
âWhoâs in Forks?â I wondered out loud, looking up at Embry for some sort of explanation. He ignored me, following Sam into the living room as the pair began conversing hastily. Jared rolled his eyes, giving Emily a knowing glance.Â
âWoah, what stinks?â Paul scrunched his nose up, Jacob, Leah and Trent following suit as they entered in from the crisp outdoors. Paul and Jacob were bare-chested and wearing cut-offs, which meant they were back from their evening patrol.Â
âAinsley.â Jared grumbled in reply to Paul, his eyes narrowing in my direction. Â
Emily threw a roll of tape in his general direction. âGive it a rest, Jared.â
âWhatâs going on?âÂ
Emily rolled her eyes, sitting next to me at the table, âAinsley came across one of the scents today and brought it home, so Iâm sure Sam and Embry are in the living room plotting how to eliminate the threat.âÂ
Paul sat on the other side of me, sniffing again. I blushed. âThatâs the males â how did you manage to bring that home?âÂ
âBring what home?â I asked, annoyance dripping off each word.Â
âThe leeches scent. Youâre covered in it.â He stated, as if it were the most obvious thing.
I paused, rearing my thoughts back to my day. I always kept an eye out for anything that seemed out of place, people that seemed obviously beautiful and perfect. People that seemed restrained. âMaddox ..â I whispered quietly, feeling my chest cave abruptly. There was no way âÂ
âMaddox?â Trent asked from across the table. âWhatâs he doing in Forks?âÂ
âHe was looking for me at Shakerâs.â I replied absently, eyes unfocused on the table in front of me. âCame by before I even showed up, didnât leave until after lunch rush.âÂ
âWhat did he want?â Paul asked, kicking his feet up onto the table. Emily grimaced.Â
I shrugged, hoping I could remain cool and collected. âNo idea, honestly. That would explain how he knows you all by name â thatâs what he meant when he said you were âŠâ I sighed, letting my eyes slip shut. âThis makes sense.â Kind of.Â
âHis scent is saturating you, Ains.â Embry drawled from the doorway, arms folded across his broad chest. Sam stood next to him, mimicking the same seriousness.
I could feel my shoulders drop forward, attempting to make myself small under the careful watch of everyone in the room. âHe sat with me when I was on break.âÂ
âYou let the scumbag sit with you?â Trent asked dubiously.Â
Better rip the bandaid off. âAnd he might have kissed my head before he left.â I conceded.Â
âAinsley ââ
âI told him to leave.â I said desperately, trying to avoid bringing my eyes to meet my boyfriends. Embry had tried his best to keep his temper from coming forward when I was around, trying to believe nothing I did was to purposely hurt him. But in that moment, I could see Leah move in between Trent and Embry, hands braced on the back of his chair. The room had shifted; it was suddenly thick, hot and uncomfortable.Â
âWhoâs Maddox?â Jacob asked, breaking the silence in the room. I shared a look with Trent, hoping he would keep good on his word. When he met my eyes, his face softened in understanding. The situation I had thrown myself into was not one out of choice: undoubtedly, Embry was fuming. If not because a vampire had been close enough to his imprint that I could have died, then because said vampire had actually touched me. Kissed me.Â
âSomeone from Seattle that I knew.â Trent said finally. âWorked with him for a few months. Not the greatest guy.âÂ
âPerfect. So, weâre doing the world a favour, then.â Embry suggested, anger dripping from his words. It was uncomfortable to hear him speak so freely about the idea of killing someone, although I knew they didnât necessarily see it as murder. Couldnât kill what was already dead.Â
âWhat are you going to do, Emb? Kill him yourself?â Leah asked from behind Trent, her tone half-teasing.
âYes.âÂ
All eyes shot to Embry then, watching his arms settle at his sides, fists trembling the slightest bit. I thought back to Maddox â small visions played across my mind. Embryâs large gray wolf ripping through his flesh, his growls filling the empty air. I tried to suppress the urge to shiver.Â
âGuess weâre heading back out there.â Jacob sighed, nodding toward Leah. âEmbry, maybe you should go home with Ains. If one of them knows her, it might be better if ââ
âNo.â He said angrily, his hard eyes cutting back to me briefly before he returned his gaze to Jacob dutifully. âI'm going with you.âÂ
At this point, I couldnât tell if he was adamant about finding Maddox to kill him, or if he really didnât want to be stuck with me. I was trying to pretend like the latter wasnât a possibility. The room emptied quickly, each warm body following Embry out of the front door, slamming it shut behind them. Trent, Emily and I sat around the kitchen table, quietly looking around the half-decorated room.Â
âBetter finish this, then.â I said finally, grabbing a roll of tape. Emily and my brother watched me for only a moment, both of their faces heavy, before Trent stood and came to help. We spent the following hour hanging multi-coloured ribbon from the ceiling, turning Emilyâs kitchen and living room into open areas with lots of space, full of balloons and streamers.Â
I offered to give Trent a ride back to Leahâs, seeing as Jacob had been their original ride to Emilyâs. Once we were in the Jeep, he turned the heat on full and turned to me.Â
âAre we going to talk about what happened?â
âDonât know what youâre talking about.â
âCâmon, Ains.â He sighed, leaning his elbow against the window. âAre you okay?â
âIâm fine.âÂ
âThatâs a load of shit,â he grumbled, âMaddox gave you hell.â
âMaddox wasnât the one who defiled me and left me on the bathroom floor.âÂ
Trent clenched his jaw. âNo, but he was the one who let frat scum slip a pill into your drink.âÂ
âTrent, leave it alone.âÂ
âWhy?â My brother asked, neck craned so he could look at me with a hard expression. âMaddox deserves everything Embry wants to do to him, and probably more.âÂ
I didnât respond; my hands gripped the steering wheel tightly while my eyes focused on navigating through the white sheet of snow that whirled around in the darkness. I didnât want to talk about Maddox. I didnât want anyone to know about what had happened, or give Embry more of a reason to get angry. I didnât want to make excuses for the man, but I didnât want to think about my boyfriend taking pleasure in killing anyone.Â
âAinsley,â Trenton finally broke the silence, a sigh tumbling from lips. âDo you wanna go home? We can go home. Iâll stay at the house with you.âÂ
I shook my head vehemently. âNo, I should probably be there when Embry comes back.â I sniffled, wiping my nose on my sleeve. I was still sick and the outside weather wasnât helping me feel any less crappy. âYouâre living with Leah now?â I asked, glancing over at Trent in the darkness.Â
He shrugged. âMy idea. Took a lot of persuasion.âÂ
âI bet.â I mumbled, turning into Leahâs driveway. âShe doesnât seem like sheâs the type to jump head first into all of this.âÂ
âDefinitely not.â He laughed, pulling his hat over his ears. âSee you tomorrow?âÂ
âYeah.â I nodded, offering him a smile as he exited the vehicle.Â
The ride back to Embry and Jacobâs side of the reservation was slow; neither of the men were home when I arrived. To spare any sort of argument later, I showered as quickly and thoroughly as I could, and threw in a load of laundry in hopes of eliminating any traces of the vampire stench. The clock on the kitchen wall read 11:56 PM by the time I finished eating and cleaned the dishes.
My eyes fought sleep until my phone read 2:00 AM. I finally gave up waiting for Embry to come home, and gave in to the exhaustion that draped over me like a thick blanket. I locked the windows tightly, ensuring to keep any harsh winds from coming through. Then, I collapsed onto my side of the bed, pulling the thick white duvet up to my chin, shivering slightly in the bed that was colder than usual.

Third Person POV
Jacob pulls into the Uley driveway with Bella still on the back of his bike. They went straight there after leaving Forks High School, knowing that Hayley has to change before hanging with the pack. He also wanted Bella to see his friends before they go off on their own.Â
âAre you sure this is a good idea?â Bella asks, taking off the helmet. âI'm a vampire girl, remember?â
Before he can answer, Hayley pulls into her normal parking spot nearby. Almost immediately, Jared, Paul, Embry and Quil pile out of the house, shoving the last pieces of their chicken wings down their throats. The Beta rolls her eyes as she gets out of her truck.Â
âYou guys couldnât wait for me?â She walks toward them.
âOf course not! Weâre growing wolves!â Paul smirks at her, taking another bite of his wing.
âWhat am I, chopped liver?â She shakes her head, stopping beside her boyfriend. âWhereâs Kim?â
âShe couldnât skip. She had a project to present today.â Jared says, shrugging, despite missing her.
Bella and Jake get off his bike and take a couple steps toward them.
âWell, look whoâs back.â Embry says, wrapping his arm around his imprint, looking at the leech-lover.
âWhat up, Bella?â Quil says, grinning.
âQuil, you too?â She asks, shocked.
âYep. Finally made the pack.â He smiles, glancing at Embry and Hayley. âIâm glad youâre here, Bella. Maybe we can get a break from Jakeâs obsessive inner monologue.â
âI wish Bella would call.â Paul speaks up, mimicking Jacob.
âI wish Bella wouldnât call.â Jared chimes in.
âMaybe I should call Bella.â Embry smirks.
âMaybe I should call Bella and hang up.â Quil adds.
âAlright, you can shut up now.â Jake says, rubbing the back of his head.
Bella smiles as the pack laughs, a few of the guys pushing each other while Embry steps back with Hayley. Sam and Emily exit the house, grin on her face as she sees the pale face girl in front of her.Â
âBella!â She says, moving to hug her. âI was wondering when weâd see your face around here again.â
The younger girl hugs back, smiling softly, whispering a soft, âsame hereâ. When they pull away, Emily steps back next to her fiancĂ©e who wraps an arm around her, giving Bella a pleasant nod hello.
âSam, we good?â Jacob speaks up, looking toward his Alpha.
âWeâre good. She wonât be getting through our line anytime soon.â He answers.Â
There's a small awkward silence which Hayley decides to break.
âAlright, Iâm gonna change and meet you boys on the beach.â She says, turning to her boyfriend.
The rest of the pack, minus Sam, Emily, Hayley, Embry and Jacob rush into the trees, laughing and ad-libbing their own macho challenges, excited for a day on the beach. Bella watches as Hayley and Embry whisper to one another, looking deep into each otherâs eyes. Their connection is deeply intimate. Bella bites her lip and looks away as soon as their lips touch, allowing them to have their moment.Â
Her eyes land on Sam and Emily, who are doing almost the same thing. Between these two couples, she can tell theyâre madly in love. Deep down she knows her relationship with Edward is nowhere near as passionate as these two couples right in front of her. For now, sheâll hope that it will one day.
Sam and Embry rush into the trees while Hayley and Emily walk inside the house, leaving Jacob and Bella alone.Â
âCome on. We can go back to my house.âÂ
They pair silently go back to his house, Bella not wanting to bring up what she wants to talk about until she knows sheâs far away from the pack.Â
âSo, uh, is Quil the only new pack member?â She asks, glancing at her best friend.
âNo. Seth Clearwater, Harryâs son, also phased. Heâs only fifteen. One of the youngest weâve had. Sam keeps him home studying, but heâs chomping at the bit.â He answers, pushing his bike toward his garage. âIâm just glad it wasnât Leah.â
âCome on, donât be such a guy.â Bella rolls her eyes.
âNo, itâs not a chick thing.â He shakes his head. âHayley is in the pack, you know. Itâs more of a triangle thing. We would have to live with a Leah, Sam, Emily pain-fest. Wolf telepathy, remember?â
âSo, Sam dumps Leah for Emily?â She raises an eyebrow as she stops before the door.
âIt wasnât like that.â He says, looking toward her. âSam hates himself for hurting Leah. But, Emily was The One.â
âYeah, I guess it sort of chooses you sometimes.â She says, thinking of her boyfriend.
âItâs more than some crush, Bella.â He sighs. âSam imprinted on Emily. Like how Jared imprinted on Kim and Hayley and Embry imprinted on each other.â
âDo I even want to know what that is?â Bella asks, watching him as he begins to walk into the garage.
She follows behind him, leaning against another bike as he pushes the kick-stand down, thinking of how to explain this to her.
âImprinting on someone is likeâŠâ He pauses, remembering Sam, Jared and Embryâs words. âLike when you see her, everything changes. All of a sudden, itâs not gravity holding you to the planet.â
About ten minutes away on the beach, Hayley runs onto the sand, rushing straight toward her boyfriend.Â
âItâs her. Nothing else matters.â Jacob continues, remembering moments his best friend and Beta have had.
Embry turns around and catches his imprint, picking her up slightly. She laughs, wrapping her arms around his neck as he swings her in a small circle.
âYou would do anythingâŠBe anything for herâŠâ His voice softening slightly.
Hayley puts her feet down on the sand, keeping her arms around her boyfriendâs neck. He grins and leans his forehead against her own, looking deep into her eyes, a smile appearing on her as she looks into his.
âIt sounds like you know the feeling.â Bella says, watching him. âHave youâŠimprinted on someone?â
âYouâd know if I had.â He shakes his head slightly before looking at his bike. âI just have a direct line to Sam, Jared and Embryâs thoughts.â
Embry leans down and gently presses his lips to Hayleyâs, allowing the always flowing sparks fly through them once again. They quickly break from the kiss when a soccer ball hits Hayley in the leg.Â
âBreak it up, lovers.â Paul calls out. âLey, youâre on my team! I ainât losing this time!â
âThen I get Embry!â Quil yells out, wanting at least one of his best friends.
The couple laugh and shake their heads before looking at one another.Â
âI guess weâre split this time.â She says with a smirk.Â
âOh, youâre going down!â He grins, smacking her butt softly before taking off down the beach toward his best friend.Â
She gasps and runs after him, giggling as she does. For the next two hours, the pack kicks the soccer ball around, trying to score a goal. Sam, Embry and Quil on one team while Jared, Paul and Hayley are on the other. Despite all of Embry and Samâs sabotage on Hayley, the teams end up tied. Emily showed up half way through with food for them, causing a small break, but theyâre right back at it before long.Â
âLey!!â Paul calls her name, kicking the ball toward her.
She stops the ball with the inside of her left foot, before kicking it down the beach, alternating between each foot. Embry quickly runs up behind her and wraps her by the waist, picking her up causing her to squeal loudly. Emily laughs from the blanket she put down, far enough away she doesnât get hurt by the ball.
âQuil! Get it!â Embry yells out, holding his girlfriend back.
Before his best friend can get a chance to get the ball, she kicks it as hard as she can from her boyfriend's arms, directly toward Jared who scores the winning goal.
âYeah!â Paul cheers, jumping in the air, throwing his fists up.
âHow?!â Quil falls to his knees in the sand.
âIs that even legal?â Sam asks, looking toward his fiancĂ©e. âRef! What do you think?â
âIn my expert opinionâŠâ She grins, pausing for suspense. âItâs a goal!â
âHell yeah!â Hayley throws up a fist as her boyfriend puts her back down.Â
âNot fair!â Embry shakes his head, smiling.Â
âItâs not fair you two kept picking on our best player!â Jared calls out, walking toward them after grabbing the ball.Â
âOh, itâs totally fair!â Sam laughs.Â
âEhhhâŠâ Emily smirks slightly.
âHA!â Hayley laughs. âEmily for the win!â
âEm! Youâre supposed to be on my side!â Sam calls out, running toward her.
She squeals and jumps up from the blanket, taking off straight toward the Beta of the pack.
âI got you, Em.â Hayley wraps her arms around Emily, both giggling.
âOh, no!â Their Alpha laughs. âWhat am I gonna do? My sister is hiding my womanâŠâ
He grins at his pack members who know exactly what heâs thinking, without their wolf mind-link. Suddenly, all the males are running toward them causing them to squeal and run down the beach, laughing as they go.
After the fun and exciting week, Hayley knew something was going to happen. The other shoe finally dropped as some would say. After patrolling all night, she thought she was going to have a decent nap then have an amazing date with her boyfriendâŠbut nothing ever goes her way. Not even an hour into her sleep, Jacob calls her, knowing her brother was on his own patrol.Â
Apparently some of Bellaâs items have gone missing and Edward smelled an unknown vampire in her bedroom. Hayley sighs to herself before rushing to Forks, knowing where the Chief of Police lives. She walks up to the house, yawning softly. She knows she could have sent someone else to be with Jacob but her and Sam are the two that can make decisions.
Sam can overthrow her since heâs Alpha but 99.99% of the time, he follows her decision, knowing she knows what sheâs doing and has everyoneâs best interest when she decides something.
âWhatâs going on?â She asks, stopping next to her pack member, glancing at Bella and Edward who are standing a few feet away from them.
âEdward smelled some random vampire in Bellaâs bedroom so weâre going to patrol outside her house from now onâŠâ Jake starts but Hayley raises her hand to stop him.
âWeâre going to what?â She bites her lip, stopping herself from yelling at him.
âWeâre going to be patrolling here now.â He says, raising an eyebrow.
âSince when, Jacob?â She asks, watching him. âDid you talk to Sam about this?â
âNo. But thatâs why youâre here.â
âWe already have to patrol extra due to the red-head, now we have to extend back to ForksâŠagain?â
âJust Bellaâs house. We have to protect her.â He says, crossing his arms.
Hayley shakes her head and thinks for a moment. If this vampire is in Forks, innocent people could get hurt. Not just his leech-lover.
âHey.â Edward speaks up, looking at the Beta.
âJust shut up, leech. Youâre lucky Iâm even considering talking to my brother about this.â She glares at him before looking at her pack mate. âAlright. Letâs go investigate and Iâll call Sam.â
âThank you, Hay.â Jacob says before leading her to the door. âBella, can you show Hayley to your room?â
She nods, thankful for the Beta right now. Edward starts to follow them, but the female pack member shakes her head.
âYou stay here. You can contaminate the stank with your own.â She says, turning around to walk into the house.
The trio walk inside, straight to the humanâs bedroom. Both Hayley and Jake sniff around the room, finding a different scent than the Cullenâs near her desk and closet. The Beta sighs and pulls her phone out of her pocket, calling her brother. He should be off patrol and Quil should have taken his place.
âHay? Is everything okay?â He answers. âShouldnât you be sleeping?â
âYeah.â She sighs. âSo, a leech has been in Bellaâs bedroom.â
âSheâs dating one. Of courseâŠâ
âNo. Like, an unknown leech. Itâs not the red-head and itâs not a Cullen. Jake wants us to start patrolling here to make sure that sheâs safe.â
She can tell he rolled his eyes by the way he sighed in her ear.Â
âThe only reason Iâm considering it is because if itâs been in her room, it can be anywhere. He could have hurt the Chief.â She continues, not wanting him to immediately dismiss her.
After a moment, he finally speaks. âAlright. Starting tonight weâll start patrolling two on the rez and two at Bellaâs.â
âThanks, Sam.â
âDonât thank me, Hayley. Youâre right. Chiefâs a good guy and heâs innocent in this. Donât want him hurt.â He sighs. âCome home and get to sleep. Iâll have Jake and Paul have tonight so you and Embry can have that date.â
âLove you.â
âLove you, too.âÂ
She hangs up and looks at Jake, who nods, already knowing what his Alpha had said.
âI appreciate it, you guys.â Bella says, looking between the pack members.
The Beta shrugs. âNot like we havenât done shit like this before.â
She immediately turns around and walks out of the room, wanting to leave the house. Edward, who has been staring at the house, rushes toward the front door when his girlfriend exits.
âWhoever it was, he left his stink behind.â Hayley says, looking at the mind-reader. âItâll be hard to miss when we cross it again.â
âWeâll handle it from here.â Jake says, continuing from his Betaâs words.
âWe donât need you to handle anything. Or anyone.â Edward shakes his head.
Jacob steps forward so heâs chest to chest with the vampire, glaring at him.
âI could care less what you need.â
âAlright, weâre done here.â Edward snaps.
âNo, youâre done here.â He says, as if he had the best comeback ever.
Bella moves between them, wanting to keep the peace.
âStop, Iâm tired of this. From now on Iâm Switzerland, okay.â She pushes on their chests but since theyâre both supernatural beings, neither move. âStop. Hayley, help.â
âAll Iâm going to say is I could care less what the leech has to say. Or you for that matter, Bella.â She says, stepping forward when Bella moves to push them apart, this time they actually move due to her strength. âJacob, you need to back down. Now. The only reason Iâm agreeing to this, with my brother too, is for the Chief. Heâs got no idea whatâs going on. He canât help who his daughter quote un-quote âfalls in love withâ. You made your bed, Bella. You lie in it. You too, Jake.â She glances between them, her tone short. âBut Chief Swan is innocent and Iâll be damned if yâall do anything to let him get hurt.â
âBut, the packâŠâ Jake starts.
Hayley growls and holds her hand up. âDonât give me that shit, Jacob Black. Donât act like you actually care about the pack. You just want to keep your little leech loving girl here safe. And you donât care who you hurt in the process. Otherwise youâd have never snuck off and all but told her about the stuff you knew you werenât supposed to.â
Before Jake can say another word, she turns and glares up at the tall, lanky vampire. Her inner wolf wanting to get at him, but sheâs keeping at bay, minus the venom in her voice.
âAs for you,â She pokes his chest. âWeâre Spirit Warriors. This is what weâre made for. To kill vampires like you, so we can handle it. If you would like to help, great! If not, stay the hell out of my way. I donât like you. I donât trust you. And you may have charmed Bella with your ways, but you ainât going to get me too. You may be a âvegetarianâ but youâre still a cold blooded killer at heart, and when it comes down to it, youâll only care about getting what you want. No matter who you hurt in the process. Itâs your kind that got a damn good man killed. A respected, loved, sweet man. And I won't let you hurt one of his best friends too just so your ego can be stroked. You and your family are already on thin ice for getting Harry killed. And that ice cracked when you almost stepped onto our land. And, so help me, if you donât want to help, and you do get in my way, I will personally be the one to rip you limb from limb. Not my brother. Not Jacob. Not my imprint. Not one of the big burly guys. But me. And Iâll enjoy it too.â
Edward swallows the little bit of venom that built up in his throat, slightly terrified of the younger woman. Bella, nervous by the speech by the pack member, steps forward, wanting to ease the tension.
âSo, are you willing to at least try to work together?â She glances between the men.
Neither men move. Despite both knowing exactly what Hayley was talking about, neither of them want to admit theyâre wrong but Edward, wanting to be the bigger man, licks his lip and nods. Jacob blows air out of his nose and nods with him.
âGreat. Weâre almost on the same page.â Hayley rolls her eyes.
âAlright, so you need to coordinate.â Bella speaks up again, looking between the three of them now. âYou know, schedules and stuff.â
The men look away from each other, not wanting to speak so the Beta throws her hands up.
âGoddamn it, you guys.â She snaps. âThe pack will take nights. Sam already said Jacob and Paul will start tonight.â
âWill days work for your family?â Bella asks, looking at the vampire who just nods. âGood. See? How hard was that?â
Hayley rolls her eyes and turns around, walking back toward the forest, wanting to go home.
âHay? Where are you going?â Jake raises an eyebrow.
âI had work last night and only slept an hour due to this bullshit so Iâm going home.â She calls back, never stopping her steps.
After all the shifters got used to their new patrol schedules for both the res and Forks, Billy decided to host a bonfire. A La Push Pack Bonfire consists of a couple things. They go to the beach and the pack members grab tons of wood to burn while using the larger pieces of wood for seats. Emily and Hayley cook all day so there is a small buffet for everyone to have before Billy tells the legends to the new pack members.
In this case it would be Seth and Quil. The council members decided amongst themselves, with the help of Sam and Hayley, that Bella should be there for this bonfire as well. She has her own part in the legends now since she decided that after graduation she was going to beâŠchanged in another area. The pack canât do anything about it.
Itâs not their choice to make, as long as itâs not in Forks or La Push, they have no say. All they can do is tell her how the shifters came to be. Hayley, having already heard the legends multiple times, still loves hearing them. It always feels like the very first time when she and Sam sat in the Blackâs backyard with the council.
She smiles to herself as she mixes the potato salad. Despite being a shifter, she doesnât hear her imprints footsteps as he enters the kitchen. He watches his girlfriend and Emily talk amongst themselves for a moment before Emily turns around to grab a plate. She jumps and puts her hand on her chest, but before she can speak, Embry puts his finger to his lips.Â
She raises an eyebrow but nods, confused on what the shifter is going to do. He slowly walks toward his girlfriend, hoping she doesnât move. Hayley, concentrating hard on the potato salad, jumps when warm arms wrap around her waist.
âEmbry!â She laughs, shaking her head. âYou scared the shit out of me.â
âThat was the plan.â He chuckles, holding her close.Â
Emily smiles and grabs a few of the already finished foods before taking them to the car, allowing them to have a moment. She knows theyâve rarely seen each other lately due to the amount of shifts theyâve had to cover. Sheâs lucky she got to see Sam during the day and most of the night. Hayley turns around in her boyfriendâs arms and grins.Â
âWell, hello, Mr. Call.â She wraps her arms around his neck.Â
âHello, Miss Uley. Do you come here often?â He teases, bending slightly to place his hands on her ass.
In a quick movement, he lifts her up and places her on the counter, making sure not to bother the potato salad. Since she never had the âwolf growth spurtâ, Embry is over a foot taller than her so that is the reason heâs always lifting her up. With her on the counter, sheâs now a little taller than him but not by much.Â
âHmmm, I come here every few days.â She jokes before moving her hand to his neck, pulling him in for a passionate kiss.
He happily returns it, pulling her closer, allowing her legs to wrap around his waist. The couple have only been together for a few months but it seems like theyâve been dating for years. Especially with all the supernatural things happening, with him phasing and all of the red-head drama going on.Â
Theyâre so madly in love but neither want to say it first, thinking it would be too early in their relationship. They pull away, gasping softly for air before Hayley leans down to put her forehead against his.Â
âWow, Mr. Call. I better not tell my boyfriend about that.â She teases softly, biting her lip.Â
He playfully growls and pulls her in for another kiss but before it can get any more passionate, a small cat call is heard from the back door. They pull away and look over his shoulder toward the noise.Â
âWell, well, wellâŠâ Paul smirks, crossing his arms before leaning against the door. âMaybe I should call in Sam to see what his little sister is doing in the kitchen.â
âOh, please! Like heâs never done this with his girl. Shouldnât you be doing my laundry or something, Paul?â
Rolling her eyes as she speaks, Hayley grabs a wooden spoon out of the container on the counter next to her. She throws it as hard as she can, causing the shifter to laugh and run out of the house. Embry shakes his head and puts his forehead against her shoulder, mumbling to her.
âWe can never have a few minutes to ourselves.â
âNope.â She says, playing with his slightly growing hair.Â
He sighs through his nose, before standing straight. He presses a quick but passionate kiss to her lips before helping her down from the counter.Â
âIâll see you later. I have a Lahote to beat up.âÂ
She smiles as she watches him run from the house toward the beach, knowing thatâs where their other pack member will be. Turning back around, she grabs the foil and covers the bowl she was previously working on.

Lucky Night | Embry Call x OC
Fandom: Twilight - Wolfpack
MC: Embry Call - Quil Ateara - OC
Requested: yes!! Anonymous asked: can you please write anything to do with Embry!!
Here you go, I hope you like it! <3
Twilight Wolfpack Masterlist
Lucky night
âEm, my sweetest boy, friend of a lifetime, best friend for the eterni- â
âCut it off. What the hell do you want Quil?â Embry interrupted him brutally. When Quil started a phone call in that way, it meant one thing, that Embry was fucked, completely fuckety-fucked.
âI matched with some- â
âNo.â
âBut you didnât even hear everyth- â
âI said no, Quil.â
âEMBRY! Listen to me, sheâs hot.â
âNO.â
âEmbry, you wonât ruin my weekend of wild sex just because youâre stupid! Youâre comingâ.
âIn what language do you want me to say it? Spanish⊠NO!â
âEmbry, manâ.
âNo, I wonât be your sideman for your 100th date of this month, you sick little wolf whoreâ.
And then the phone call ended.
Embry couldnât recall all the blind double dates he had to go to because Quil matched with someone on Tinder. Seriously, that guy matched with every living thing, and poor Embry he was the side companion who always had to settle for the boring side girl who didnât want to be there too.
How many times he and the âotherâ girl had to sit there, in a restaurant or a bakery or a cafe and watch the lovebirds say stupid things. And it went over and over and over again since Quil was not interested in going out with the same girl twice.
âWhy should I waste time with the same girl if one day Iâll meet my imprint. Until then, this boy here just wants to have funâ, he said while downloading that damn app on his phone.
He was not entirely wrong though, Embry had to admit, but he couldnât imagine that his old friend would have become a womanizer.
How many girls could have been interested in Quil?
Apparently, a lot. But like, really a lot.
But this time, oh this time Embry wouldnât have let Quil convince him. Going on another blind date with another side girl was out of the question, he would have rather spent his Saturday night playing video games with the pack than go out with Quil again.
How Embry ended up in Quilâs car on that Saturday evening, though, was a mystery.
âDamn me! This is the last time, Quil, clear?â he shouted, while his best friend was grinning.
âYou are incapable of saying no, Em. I could ask you to jump out of the car now and youâd do it.â.
âOk, this is absolutely wrong. I would rather punch you out of this stupid car. And once this nightmare ends, Iâll surely punch you in the face. Multiple timesâ.
âYeah, yeah, sure buddyâ.
Embry spent the entire ride to Port Angeles promising himself to not end in Quilâs trap ever again.
After 30 minutes of Quil singing RED (Taylor Swiftâs version) on a loop, they finally arrived at the pub where this blind double date was supposed to happen.
Quil and Embry couldnât show more different emotions, the first one was excited and was already thinking about his dessert while the other one⊠well, Embryâs face showed it all.
âStop being a buzzkill and smile, if this goes wrong, Iâll kill youâ. Quil whispered while they were heading to the entrance.
The pub was full of people, all laughing and drinking and chitchatting about different things. The two friends could distinctly hear anything that every person was saying in that place.
Wolf hearing, you know.
Embry rolled his eyes, already preparing himself for another boring night.
âThey were supposed to be here alreadyâ.
Embry frowned.
âSo, theyâre not here?â
âI cannot see them anywhereâ, Quil replied, with a worried tone of voice.
On Embryâs face, a little sarcastic smirk started to appear.
âWould it be possible that this girl just dumped you?â
âNah, man, she was so into me! Itâs impossible!â
âThereâs a little pitch in your voice, man. Youâre not fooling meâ. Embry said, before bursting into a thunderous laugh and patting his best friend on his shoulders.
It was the first time that someone dumped Quil on a Tinder double date and the guy was almost destroyed.
âA-Ah, it canât be. Itâs impossibleâ, he said, taking his phone out of the pocket and looking for her number. He tried to call her, but the voice mail kept going.
âShe ghosted and dumped you the same night, nice job!â Embry continued, laughing again.
Quil clicked his tongue, rolling his eyes.
âFuck, she really dump-ghosted me. I wasnât expecting thatâ.
And you could see it in his eyes that he really was expecting something completely opposite to what was happening.
âCome on, itâs not the end of the world.â His best friend said, handing him a beer.
âyeah no, but I lost my fucking bet! I own Paul 50 bucksâ.
âAnd you own me a Frozen yoghurtâ.
âI really need to explain to you how betting works, again. Kim is better than you at this.â Quil said, bumping his shoulder into his best friendâs one.
âCome on, letâs get out of here. I hate the smell of all these hormonesâ, continued Embry with a disgusted expression.
The two wolves immediately headed to the exit, Embry still patting Quil on his shoulder and Quil sighing again and again. His ego was hurt, a lot. But he knew that there was nothing that a night spent playing video games with Embry and Jake couldnât heal.
âQuil? Is that you?â a warm and trembling female voice asked. It came from behind.
Embry and Quil turned at the same time, curious to know who that tiny voice belonged to.
It was a short girl, russet skin and long straight hair. She was covered in an oversized teddy coat because for humans, that night was an extremely cold one.
âAriel?â Quil asked, getting closer to her. It was dark in the parking lot and even wolf-eyes couldnât see that girl clearly.
âYes! Itâs me, Iâm so sorry my car broke, and my phone⊠well itâs gone tooâ, she said taking a few steps forward, just the ones that were needed for the two boys to see her face completely.
And that moment, Embryâs body completely froze. Time and space were not the same anymore, nothing mattered, nor Quil and his stupid double dates or the videogames or his inability to bet. He stood there, looking at the small girl like she was a bright fallen star or even better, a goddess that came down on Earth only for him.
That was the only time Embry was truly happy to have accepted Quilâs forced invitation to a date.
âAre you ok, Ariel? What happened?â Quil asked her, getting really close to her.
Maybe a little bit too close according to Embryâs new jealousy.
âMy car stopped in the middle of nowhere and my phone fell from my purse, I was only able to call a taxi to come here. Iâm sorry to be so lateâ. She was indeed really sorry, her voice and her body could tell, and Embry was slowly dying inside because no, she could not be sad, not under his watch.
âOh, itâs ok, no worries! Are you alone? Whereâs your friend?â
âLast minute change of plans, Iâm sorry againâ.
âNo worries at all, my friend Embry herâŠâ
It took Quil only one quick look to understand what happened. He looked at Embry, and then at Ariel and then at Embry again.
âARE YOU KIDDING ME?â He shouted, not believing to his own eyes. It was all just a stupid joke, he was sure.
Was he?
Was it really just a joke?
âIs everything ok, is your friend ok?â Ariel asked, getting closer to Embry.
âHi, Iâm Ariel,â she said to him, raising her face to meet his gaze. âIâm sorry you had to wait here with Quil for meâ.
Embry had to collect all his remaining strength to articulate a sentence that had a meaning. Her eyes were so mesmerizing, and he could have gladly spent the rest of the night looking into them.
He smiled at her.
âAh no worries, everything is fine. Weâre happy youâre safe and soundâ, he said with his warmest tone and husky voice.
âWere you going home? I probably wasted your timeâ, Ariel said â her attention growing more and more on Embry that she almost forgot she was there to see Quil.
âActually⊠no. Quil owns me a frozen yoghurt and we were going to get some. Want to join?â
âNOâ.
âI would love toâ.
Quil and Ariel replied at the same time.
âPerfectâ, Embry replied back, moving to his side to show her where their car was.
In the meantime, Quil was there a few steps away from the two newly lovebirds, looking at them with an angry expression.
How could it be possible? She was supposed to be his date. Not Embryâs fucking imprint.
Embry glanced at him, smirking.
âYou coming?â he asked Quil while opening the passenger door for Ariel, and helping her sit in the car.
Quil growled and covered in a few seconds the distance from the car. He opened the driverâs door, but Embry immediately stopped him.
âWrong door, manâ.
Quil growled again. âYou own me thisâ, he whispered.
âI knowâ, Embry grinned.
And he meant it.
Embry really owned Quil everything from that night on.
Who would have known that for the first time he would have been the main character instead of his best friend?
Apparently, fate did.
The same fate that let Arielâs car break in the middle of nowhere.
That nowhere being the Quileuteâs reservation borders, precisely.
What were the odds?

Something About You Chapter Two

a/n: Some characters might sound ooc, some barely had talking scenes in the moviesâwhich most this fic is based off ofâ but oh well. These are my fun interpretations and inspired interpretations from other fics Iâve read and imagination. If thereâs a warning I skipped thatâs addressed in the SAY (something about you) Masterlist, let me know. And let me know what you think !

Chapter Two | First Impressions Are Never The Best
La Push, Washington | February 9, 2024
đŠđđ§đ đđ„đđŁđŁđđ đđđŠ đđđđđ burning her handprint through his skin that felt more like a pinch, but it was nothing compared to finally imprinting after years of being stuck as the third wheel and constantly teased he would die alone without his other half.
And he was convinced of this faith bestowed upon his pack. He had met every girl within the reservation to Forks and still, nothing. No one caught his attention. No one had his heart jumping and his lungs deprived of oxygen as she took up space in his headâhis world consumed and completed by a missing puzzle piece, just as intense as every member whoâve imprinted have said it was.
Seth had gone on many double dates Embry would set up, and heâd tag along given he had nothing better to do and hoped one of his dates was the woman he was desperately searching for. Plus Embry knew Seth wouldnât decline as everyone else had. His good heart refused him too. But no more did he have to wait for his imprint.
    For her.
    And fuck, sheâs so beautiful.
Eyes brown like the two moonless nights with honey swirls. Lips perfectly round, soft, and warm like a fresh batch of cookies with lingers of alcohol and barbeque chips. Dark brown skin untouched by blemishes and her scent was like a drug. Chills scorned along his body and pumped blood throughout his system, tightening the space within his shorts. Everything about this woman excited Seth. There were no words in his vocabulary to describe her beauty other than a masterpiece.
He knew this pit in his stomach wasnât some unheard-of sickness, but his wolf leading Seth to her. His imprint. Who was now in pain because of him.
As soon as she made contact with his face, she yanked back her hand with a painful yelp. Whatever was in her hands slipped as she grabbed her tingling palm for comfort, somehow tripping over herself. Seth was quick to grab her flailing arm, pulling her toward him so she could balance herself, but he was pushed off which sent her falling back to the sand.Â
Seth attempted to reach for her again to help her up. He was desperate to touch any part of her to prove this wasnât a dream and this woman was, in fact, real. His . But just as he was mere seconds from taking her handâa hand gripped his shoulder and yanked him back with such strength only reserved for another supernatural species, or his pack mate and cousin, Kimi.
âDude, what the fuck is your problem? We go around kissing people now?â She defended his imprint, sizing him like heâd lost his mind. And perhaps he had but for all the right reasons.
    âLet me go.â
It returned when Seth successfully shrugged off her grip, further distancing him from his imprint still struggling off the ground. This frustrated Seth and his wolf very much that an inhuman growl rumbled from his chest. Confusion struck across Kimiâs face. She followed his gaze toward her friend, back to him, to her, then back to him again.Â
Kimi removed her hand immediately with a gasp, âOh my god.â Then even louder, in a higher tone, almost a squeal, âoh my god! Seth, is this for real? Is this actually happening?â Her eyes lit up with excitement upon figuring out Seth had imprinted. She didnât need to see in his mind to know when it was obvious.Â
    It always was.
He gave a sheepish shrug while pushing back his thick hair, failing to bite back his radiate smile. âI think so.â
But that wasnât all; his skin felt tingly, his stomach bloated with butterflies, and he was sure his heart would explode by how fast it pounded.Â
Kimi squealed in his ear, playfully punching his shoulder.Â
âAlright, alright. If you donât mind,â Seth gestured toward the obvious, still needing help. Kimi apologized and allowed him to do his thing.Â
âStop,â the woman stopped Seth from helping her to her feet, and like an obedient dog, he listened. âI need a moment. The worldâs spinning and it wonât stop.â
She remained on her knees, sinking her face into her palms with a groan. Her pitch-black braids curled at the ends fell over her shoulders despite it tied back from her face. Seth couldnât tell if she was tipsy, drunk, or sober enough. Her breath reeked of alcohol, especially their sacred specialty. He followed the scent to the red cup in Kimiâs hand.Â
As if she knew he was conducting a short-lived investigation, she lifted her hands with defeat. âHey, donât huff and puff at me. It was her choice! Sheâs a grown-ass woman able to make her own decisions. Take it up with her, not me.â
Seth couldnât argue with that. He could never be against oneâs choice, especially his imprint. Who was he to dictate that? She didnât look any older than in her early twenties, still a grown woman able to make her own decisions.
âHow much did she have?â Seth asked, carefully surveying his imprint.
    âJust a sip, I swear. A big one though.â
Just a sip of that shit was enough to have any person brave enough like this. Kimi grew accustomed to the drink that she didnât have a bigger effect. This worried Seth very much, but stopped every part of his being from hovering over her just as she said not to do.
He felt useless and didnât know how to help her properly.
âDiamond,â Renesmee knelt beside his imprint in a flash and helped her to her feet. âAre you okay? What happened?â
    Diamond? Is that her name?
Sethâs imprint, Diamond, gave a weak nod. âYeah, Iâm good. Would've been better had this guy not assaulted me!â She gestured a firm hand toward Seth as she wiped her mouth with the sleeve of her black jacket, wiping off her gloss too.
Kimi pointed at Seth and laughed. It was the funniest moment for her.
But not so much for Seth whose heart crumbled at such accusations. âWhat? I didnât assault you, Iââ
    âYou kissed me unprovoked!â
âIt wasnâtâitâs not like that, I swear. I didnâtâŠI wouldnâtâŠâ Seth trailed once putting everything together. Technically he did assault Diamond. No matter the context, he kissed her unprovoked which classified as sexual assault.Â
This was not a good look for him. Not the first oppression he imagined. Itâs possible he could be loving her from jail if she reported the incident, which Seth very much wished to dissuade.Â
He dipped his head with guilt, nervously licking his lips. âIâm sorry. I got too excited and I wasnât thinking straight.â
âYou werenât thinking? All the space in the world and you still came up to me? Are you drunk?â Diamond questioned with a scoff, to which his head dipped even further, almost like a puppy getting caught mutilating their owner's shoes.Â
He wasnât drunk but wished he was even though he felt like it. It wouldâve been easy to excuse. âPlease donât hate me.â Seth practically begged.Â
Diamondâs glare stung. Her walking away stung even more, though her heavenly scent blessed his nose. He could bathe in it if it was possible. But Seth refused to allow her to leave without explaining himself. Itâs the least he could do to prove he wasnât a fucking weirdoâthat he was more than that and she meant more to him. It also fucking hurts. Not his pride, but his feelings and his wolf.Â
    He didnât like being hated.Â
He never had been the hated one in his family, in his pack, within the reservation, even amongst the vampires. Seth was well-liked. All he had to do was flash his big goofy smile to brighten someoneâs day, but it didnât seem to extend toward his imprint, and he wasnât used to that.
âLook, Iâm really, really sorry. Could you at least hear me out?â Seth apologized again with as much sincerity left in him. He hoped she would stop to hear him out but didnât so he grabbed her arm without thinking. âWaitââ
Diamond flung him off. âDonât fucking touch me. In fact, donât come near me ever again. Just stay the fuck away. Youâve done enough.â
Her words stung. It felt like getting run over thirty times and left for dead. And the worst part about it, Seth was too good of a person to disobey her wish even if his wolf begged him to follow after her. To be near her. To smell her. To touch herâ fuck! Even his thoughts were perverted.
He ran a stressful hand over his face, pushing back his long thick hair with a deep breath in hopes of getting control of himself. He couldnât afford to piss her off. Or allow his emotions to get the better of him that he ends up regretting his actions later. His emotions were at an all-time high. Her name was singing in his head and could already picture their future together.
At least Seth was able to watch Diamond walk away. He admired her athletic figure outlined with the black bathing suit he once saw on Kimi. Her braids swayed mid-length and her entire backside was covered in sand. Heâd chuckle at the view if he didnât feel terrible about offending his imprint and ruining any possible future of them together.Â
Heâd go after her if he dared but felt it was best to give her space. This was usually easier watching on the sidelines. His pack mates with their imprints, they made it look easy. Everything came easy to them. But now that it was his turnâŠit was nowhere near damn easy.Â
Jacob clasped a hand on Sethâs shoulder with a chuckle. âShe doesnât hate you. At least, not for long.âÂ
Seth rolled his eyes. He didnât like his Alpha joking about his situation, but it was better him than directly about Diamond. It also wasnât anything new with their relationship because heâd done the same to him on multiple occasions.
âNot helpful, Jacob.â Renesmee muttered and he gave a shrug. She touched Seth lightly with a comforting smile, though his eyes never left Diamond. âItâs nothing personal; she just doesnât know how amazing you are. Itâs only the first day. In time, she will know so donât worry too much.â
âBut I am worried. All I feel is worry and thereâs nothing I can do about it since she doesnât want me anywhere near her.â Seth finally took his eyes off Diamond, meeting Renesmeeâs gentle gaze that was free of judgment. âIâm worried I fucked up for good. Iâm worried something might happen to her. What if someone kidnaps her? What if a blood-crazed vampire trespasses and sucks her dry? What ifââ
âHow about I go after Diamond to make sure sheâs okay in your place? Hopefully, itâll kill any crazed delusions you keep conjuring. Would that help?â
    âNot really, but itâs something.â
âSeth, Diamondâs my friend. And roommateâŠand I guess technically family. Sheâs safe with me.â Renesemee assured.
    âIâll come with!â Kimi volunteered.Â
Seth hated it wasnât him going after Diamond, but he trusted Renesmee and sometimes his cousin. Diamond would be safe with them. It was better them than him since he was sure he would do something stupid like kiss her again.Â
âOkay,â Seth finally agreed. âThank you.â
âOf course. I knew your time would come and Iâm happy itâs Diamond. Sheâs the sweetest when you get to know her,â which Seth planned on doing, getting to know everything about her. âCongrats though.â
âYeah, congrats on finding your imprint. It took you long enough.â Kimi chuckled into another sip of her cup, emptying the remains. âHopefully sheâs too dizzy to remember your face, then technically, you can start all over and not do what you just did.â
They were both running away to catch up with Diamond before Seth could respond. It was then he noticed his pack mates running in his direction with big smiles on their faces, hitting his shoulder with aching strength and combating him with their congratulations. All but Leah who went home after her run to her imprint.Â
âYou went right in for it,â said Quil, his unruly curly hair still having a mind of its own. âSeeing it unfold was something straight out of them rom-coms Claire forces me to watch. Thereâs literal goosebumps along my arms.â He extended his arm to showcase tiny bumps.Â
Sethâs cheeks warmed with embarrassment as he started second-guessing everything. âDid I come in too hot? Was it too much?â
âShe walked away didnât she?â Paul chuckled.
They all laughed at him. Laughter that diminished bits of his confidence, and as he played back the scenario, the more he cringed. He palmed his face and groaned out.Â
I shouldâve gone about this differently, he told himself.Â
Embryâs voice picked up in the mixture of mockery and laughter, âyou just couldnât wait could you? I donât blame you. Thatâs a woman right thereâa whole lotta woman youâve never dealt with. You sure you can handle that?â
The crease between Sethâs brows deepened when he perked from his hands. âWhat do you mean? O-of course I can handle her. Why wouldnât I? Arenât we not made to be?â He defended, possibly missing his point. Â
This confused him very much. The whole point of the imprint was to reconnect the other half of another, the missing piece to a puzzle. While everyone had their own theories as to why imprinting had its purpose, Seth strongly believed it was a means to finding his soulmate. A nearly perfect match that brought together two lonely souls that desperately needed each other to sparkle in different ways that unified their connection.Â
Diamond wasnât a conquest able to bear Seth healthy strong wolves or an insurance to pass along the geneâshe was a woman Seth wanted to cherish and love, both the good and bad. He couldnât wait to express that part of himself. It was also why he failed to understand what Embry meant.Â
If Diamond was a challenge, it was one he welcomed with open arms.Â
Embry shook his head with a hum. âYou have much to learn, Seth. A fine ass woman likeââ
A growl rumbled from Sethâs chest. Something he never had done before which caught everyone by surprise. It didnât sit well that someone he knew and respected would compliment his imprint in ways that were obviously presented and needed no words to explain.Â
Embry lifted his hands with mocked fear. âOooh jealous Seth finally comes out to play. This isnât the Seth Iâm used to. I like it.â
âThe puppy is no more. The big dog has come to play.â Paul teased, giving everyone another opportunity to laugh at him. All but Jacob who came to his aid, though itâs obvious by the smile on his face the situation humored him.
âAlright, leave him alone. You know the law; imprints are off-limits. That includes unwanted comments about oneâs imprint you yourself wouldnât want another describing yoursâthat is when you imprint.â
Embry didnât take offense to this. He was well-versed with women that if he didnât imprint he would never be alone. His charms and natural charisma did the job for him. Pretty sure he invited two women just to fool around behind their backs. âAll Iâm saying is that there is no way in hell Seth can handle a woman. You have the body of a man but the face of a baby with the mindset of a boy. You donât even have your shit together and play games all day. How are you going to take care of your imprint when you barely can take care of yourself?â
âIâm not a baby.â Seth defended, yet couldnât help the pout in his tone that proved otherwise.
âYouâre still the youngest in the pack.â Quil pointed out.
He wasnât. There were many new young shapeshifters after the mess with Renesmee and the Volturi caused and all the foreign vampires that was brought to their land, but the pack would always consider Seth the youngest. Even younger than the actual youngest.
âYeah, but that doesnât make me incapable of requiring the skills needed to get my shit together. I got a job at Samâs auto shop, enough savings for emergencies, decent credit, a car, and I take online classes. I can take care of my imprint!â Seth clenched his fist, his chest puffing with burning rage. He must get his wolf in control or he might accidentally phase and expose their existence, but he desperately wanted to beat the shit out of Embryâout of all of them for doubting him in a moment where their support was most needed. âYou donât even know herânone of you do. You donât know what she needs.â
âApparently you donât either cause she walked away.â Embry muttered under his breath, which everyone including Seth heard.
    That was the last straw.
But before Seth could do anything, Jacob quickly stepped between the two with his hand firm against Sethâs chest. âAlright, alright, fuck off Embry. All of you back off and give us some space.â And that they did because it wasnât an order from a friend or family, but an order from their Alpha. Aside from Paul who was still part of Samâs pack and second-in-line. Then he turned to Seth and motioned his head. âCome on. Letâs cool you down before show yourself and expose our ass.â
He had to pull at Sethâs arm to keep him from growling at Embry who finally decided to back off. The two had a playful relationship, but there were times when Embry would go so far that it was no longer fun. Itâs no secret the pack viewed Seth as the babyâwhich that he was, and was the youngest to ever phaseâbut he no longer wanted that title lingering around until death. Not when he has something to prove and someone to improve for.Â
Jacob planted Seth down into a beach chair that was wet from the previous owner and handed him an ice-cold water bottle to cool himself down since he declined his offer of beer. Not that Seth wasnât much of a drinker, which was true, but he already felt drunk off his imprint. Heâd been weak in the knees since the second he met those honey-brown eyes, struggling to gain control of his consciousness that wished nothing more than to kiss Diamond again.Â
His tongue glided along his pink lips where the stickiness of Diamondâs gloss stained. Reminiscing the warmth of those soft lips burned his face a deep red color, a taste he yearned for so badly it ached. Truth be told, it was Sethâs first kiss. He hoped that part wasnât obvious, not that he remembered much of how it went down given one moment he was in the parking lot, then was slapped within seconds.Â
He shouldâve gone about it differently. Approached her differently. Kissed her differently. Fuckânow that the high was settling with each cold sip, it just mightâve been the worst kiss on the planet.Â
Good thing Sethâs pride wasnât a factor; he was willing to learn how to better himself to please Diamond. Heâs always been a people-pleaser, that was no secret too. At least this time it wouldnât be taken advantage of. He refused Embryâs words to get to him.Â
âIgnore Embry. Heâs just being a fucking pain in the ass, purposely riling you up since itâs easy to do now that youâre an imprinted wolf. Likely jealous the youngest in the pack imprinted before him.â Jacob popped open a cold beer and sipped the majority of it in one sip. âDonât let him tell you any differently; youâll know what your imprint needs. Itâs in our nature to learn and adjust.â
Seth honestly didnât wish to waste another breath speaking on Embry. He didnât matter when Diamond existed. âYou must know of Diamond since Nes is close with her? What do you know? Where has she been my entire life?âÂ
The cool water quenched his thirst and calmed any lingering anger that was present before.
âSheâs Nesâ roommate from Florida who runs track for U.W, alongside Kimi and Tayen. Iâve been to a few of her meets in support with Nes and sheâs crazy talented. No doubt weâll one day see her competing in the Olympics.â
Seth felt a sense of pride through Diamondâs accomplishments. Sports wasnât the path he desired since he could easily dominate in it, but could as quickly get banned because of the unspoken rage that came with being a competitive shapeshifter. He didnât know how Kimi did it being that she was also a part of the pack, but he couldnât wait to support Diamondâs journey to the big screens. A gold medal would look good in their future house, displayed as soon as they entered.
âŠbut that excitement started to dial down when realizing she attended the University of Washington located in Seattle. Nearly four hours away from the reservation. His entire life.Â
This was a decision he needed to think about within his space and decided to stick to the main conversation. âWhat else?â Seth inquired.
âI could tell you every little detail spokenââ
âGood. Because I want to hear all of it.â
ââbut Nes would kill me for exposing her like that and some things arenât for me to say.â Said Jacob and Seth quickly understood his point, but he desperately needed to know everything about his imprint. It was in his right to know. Plus it wouldnât matter much when they shared minds while phasing. âSpeaking from personal experiences, itâs best you learn about your imprint from her. Not by the words of othersâbut from her mouth and what she chooses you to know about her. Besides, Nesâ information has done enough.â
    âWhat do you mean?â
    âAlice.â
    Seth nodded. âOf course.â
âAccording to Nes, it almost didnât happen tonight as planned because Diamond changed her mind last minute about coming out. But she was determined to set the future back on course when Alice called about the decision change and made her come. If she hadnât, you wouldnât have imprinted. At least not for another while longer. Iâm sure Nes wouldâve found a way to force you both in the same room.â
Seth knew of Aliceâs abilities but never the extent of how far out into the future she could see, but thought it was one of the coolest abilities on earth. All of the Cullenâs abilities were out of this world. There were times Seth wished he obtained unique gifts beyond what he already was, but he wouldnât change a thing even if the opportunity presented itself.
Becoming a werewolf was the best thing to happen in his life despite the circumstances and loved the good and bad that came with it. It was part of his identity and his culture. Without it, imprinting was impossible. He then wouldnât have ever met Diamond.Â
He was thankful to his closest friend and technically his niece through the marriage between Charlie and his mother, Renesmee, for making this possible. And to Alice for caring enough to look into his future. This day by far topped the best day in his life.Â
âNes has a good heart. Sheâs always looking out for me.â Seth said with a warm smile and Jacob nodded in agreement.
âYou have a good heart too. You deserve a life outside of this pack and someone to take all of your attention so youâre not on my ass about Alpha duties.â
Seth drew back in defeat. âHey now! I care about this pack as much as you do.â
âI know you do. I appreciate it more than you know, and you better not ever make me admit that shit again 'cause Iâll deny it forever until my grave.â Jacob stood from his seat with a long stretch. âCongratulations though. If Diamond deserves anyone it should be you and you, her too. At least you didnât imprint on a filthy blood-sucker. Fuck knows we got enough of them running around thinking they own the place.â
âYour imprint is one. Well, half one.â Seth corrected when earning a look from Jacob.Â
    âSheâs different. Sheâs my blood-sucker.â
Seth scrunched his nose at his hypocrisy, pushing back his curly thick hair thatâs grown a few more inches over the months. Such demeaning words to describe vampires werenât housed in his vocabulary but the pack had various creative ways to name them.
Jacob left after a while to enjoy the festivities and deal with Alpha duties to catch up with Renesmee. Seth stood back to finish his water and enjoy the salty breeze, hopefully giving his imprint enough time to settle her emotions.
    But he missed her already.Â
Diamond consumed every inch of his mind that Seth could die happily knowing her face was on his mind last. He allowed nature to take over and tracked her scent to one of the blue tents scattered along the beach, behind the posted sign so many wouldnât wake up in water, being swept out in the ocean.
He lingered nearby like a weirdo, unsure how to approach the tent. Or if it was even appropriate after what he had done. Inside, Kimi, Tayen, and Renesmeeâs voices were identified. The four were laughing about a previous conversation before Seth arrived, and he relaxed at Diamondâs uncontrollable laughter.Â
    Sheâs okay.
Renesmee wasnât surprised to find Seth lingering around as she exited the tent, still warm with laughter. She motioned her head and he followed behind without a word.
âIs she alright?â Seth asked when out of earshot from the tent. Diamondâs laughter was a good indicator, but he needed to be sure.Â
âYou spooked her but sheâs fine. Sheâs more focused on stopping the world from spinning than the fact you stole her first kiss.â
He stopped dead in his tracks and his eyes widened with shock. â F-first kiss? â Seth exclaimed and Renesmee threw her hand to her mouth with a gasp.
âOh my god! I wasnât supposed to say thatâor anything at all. Just pretend you didnât hear what I said. Weâre just going on a small walk with no mentions of what I didnât say.â
âI canât just unhear that, Nes! Itâs literally embedded into my brain!â Seth threw back his head with a groan, dragging a hand over his face. âFuuck. If she didnât hate me before, she definitely does now.â
What shouldâve been a special moment was classified as sexual assault, ruined because he couldnât keep his wolf in check. There was no backing out of this or erasing the memory. He would forever be known as the weirdo who stole her first kiss.
âHate is a stretch.â She attempted to twist the narrative. âShe just doesnât know you yet.â
âYou can hate someone you donât know.â Seth pointed out with panic. âW-what am I going to do? What can I do? How can I make this better so she doesnât think I'm a creep? Or someone who ruined a special moment?â
Renesmee saw her friend was out of luck with getting on his imprintâs good side and knew if anyone had the answers it was her. After all, they were roommates. Theyâre with each other almost every single day, if not, all night.Â
âHow about some food?â Renesmee suddenly offered.
âOh, no, Iâm not hungry right now.â Seth turned down the offer. âI am, but I canât eat without settling this matter first. Itâs eating me alive. No pun intended.â
She slapped Sethâs shoulder with strength that nearly made him lose his balance. âNot you, sillyâDiamond. I was just on my way to make her a plate since sheâs hungry for actual food rather than chips or whatever leftovers she brought, but youâre here now! You can offer it as a peace offering.â
Seth was down with the idea and was already heading toward the grills to do his duty as Diamondâs wolf by taking care of her. âI can do it! Iâll pack every inch of the plate with everything she likes.â
Renesmee pumped her fist with support. âThatâs the spirit!â
With the plate in hand, staring down at containers of various foods, Seth realized something. ââŠwhat does she like? Is she picky? A vegan? On a diet, needing to hit a certain calorie intake a day? Is she a hotdog woman or hamburger? I should just pack it with fruits instead to be safe, right? But you said real food and fruits arenât enough to satisfy hunger. Letâs take this to the top.â
âYouâre seriously overthinking this, Seth.â She teased but took the time to point out things sheâd witnessed Diamond eating before.Â
Jacob didnât have to deal with this. Renesmee consumed both food and blood. Though she preferred blood, she still needed bits of human food to sustain a proper diet. The two went hunting weekly and Bella and Esme kept her well-fed; she never needed to step in a kitchen, unlike Diamond who was human through and through. Someone who needed a good balance to maintain a healthy figure and energy as a track runner.Â
As he packed the plate with various foodsâcheeseburger with extra pickles and ketchup, beans, fries, and moreâSeth had more worries on his nonexistent plate. Like if the subject matter of the âimprintâ slipped into Diamondâs ear.Â
    âDid youââ
âOf course not. Thatâs for you to tell her, not me, Kimi, Tayen, or anyone else.â Renesmee just knew what he was asking before it was asked. I guess I am pretty predictable.
Relief filled his system. He very much wanted to tell Diamond himself about the imprint. He wanted to be there at every step of the way to answer her questions and clear any confusion. He couldnât wait to get this off his chest. âSo I hear she attends U.W? Practically a track star in the making if not one already.â
âYep, full ride and all.â She mustâve caught the contemplative look on Sethâs face which explained the nudge to his shoulder. His smile was small and wary and somewhat forced. âI know that faceâJacob had the same look when it was time to leave forks before people got suspicious, and I decided to attend college. He had to make a difficult decision as Alpha to stay with me while compromising his duty to his pack. You want to follow her to Seattle?â
Seth adjusted the bun sliding off the burger and made room for more beans as Renesmee suggested. It seemed his imprint loved baked beans and lots of ketchup.âI have no choice but to. I physically canât be apart from Diamond and neither can she once she starts noticing. It hurts now, imagine what a four-hour distance would do. I mean, thereâs no way in hell I would ask her to drop everything to stay here with me, not when her life and career are set in Seattle. Thereâs nothing for her here.â
âI can talk to my dad about helping you transfer,â she offered without hesitation while retying her cover-up that loosened from a gust of wind. âHeâd be more than happy to sponsor your studies if moneyâs a problem. He adores you already and tolerates you out of most wolves, not to mention weâre family. Heâll do it. My mom will make him.â
    âIâll consider it. Thanks.â
Seth could use the help. Part-time at Samâs auto shop paid enough to take care of small bills and eat, but not enough to survive in the big city. Not even Quileute Nation benefits would cover half of it aside from maybe tuition.Â
But this was more than that. This was the biggest decision in his life; a decision that placed him in the position of leaving behind his home, his family, his life, and his duties to the pack. Everything for a moment he anticipated the second he was born.Â
He needed to talk to Leah.Â
But first, he needed to feed his imprint. Diamond was his first priority.
Once the plate was fixed and perfectly balanced with proteins, veggies, and fruitsâSeth delivered the meal to Diamond. Renesmee stood aside for support but was out of frame. His palms were sweating from how nervous but so excited he was to see her again. He was sure his shaking leg was mimicking his invisible wagging tail, faster when Diamond came out of the tent. Only partially because the cool breeze caught her off guard.
Her smile faltered at Sethâs presence, replaced with a thin line. âWhat do you want?â
She remembered him. Great. She didnât smell in distress as opposed to earlier which was a start, but she wasnât exactly relaxed either.Â
âF-for you,â Seth offered the plate of food as a peace offering. He mightâve gotten too carried away and packed more than she could handle, but she didnât seem to oppose. Even as her expression remained cold and offended, her stomach stated otherwise.
Seth couldnât help thinking how pretty she looked even while glaring daggers at him. All boosted with energy that her attention was on him, and he was near her again. Her presence calmed him and his wolf. Not to mention the raging boner threatening to expose his physical desire for her.
âDid you do something to the food?â Diamond eyed the plate with skepticism, hiding further behind the tentâs entrance with a shiver. She wouldnât have to be cold if she accepted him and invited him inside to snuggle.
Sethâs brows furrowed in confusion at the assumption, angling himself in a not so awkward position. âAside from adding extra pickles, ketchup, and more baked beansâŠno?â
âWhat is this then? Whereâs my friend? The one who was supposed to be fixing this? I was clear with my words and meant it.â
âUmmâŠâ Sethâs gaze shot to Renesmee who frantically shook her head not to look her way or mention her. âNes had to, umâŠâ He had to think of something quick. âHelp with something. I know herâweâre good friends. Family actually, Iâm her uncle through marriage though we donât really do the label thing. At least out loud we donât, but we grew up together. B-but anyway, I wanted to apologize for my behavior earlier. It was uncalled for and I swear Iâm not like thatânever ever been like that and would never do something like that ever again.â
    She hummed.
A nervous smile stretched across his face, hoping to win her over if the food was least appealing. Seth could tell she was contemplating her options, but ultimately, listened to her hunger and snatched the plate from his hand. The tent zipped back up before he could tell her to enjoy the meal.Â
    Renesmee offered a thumbs up.
With his hand clenched tight, Seth pumped the air with a silent praise and a tiny jump. The tension between them was the least of his concerns when she accepted his peace offering in the end. That was a start. A better interaction than how he imagined it would be.
He succeeded in his first duty to her. Now he could ponder his decisions and thoroughly plan out his next step.

Wildest Dreams Masterlist
ââââââââââââ
Time seemed to pass by. For some, it moved quickly as the raindrop crashing from the sky onto the ground. For others, time seemed to be standing still.
Paul had never been happier. His eyes are bright, so full of light Y/N brought into his life and he didnât dare question the lack of nightmares now. At first, he worried theyâd return with a vengeance, but as days turned into weeks and weeks trickled into months, the nightmares became an afterthought neatly tucked at the back of his mind.
Things with Y/N were perfect; at the two month mark, she moved in with him though they had dinner with her dad twice a week. Paul didnât mind it, in fact he relished in the father-son relationship theyâve built, becoming another stitch on his old wounds.
Within a month of moving in together, theyâve turned the house upside down repainting it, changing some of the decor. It brought so much work his way, to the whole pack if heâs being honest. Y/N had a way to manipulate each of the guys without anyone truly noticing it until theyâre halfway painting the living room and at that point they could only admire her wit. The imprints would gather as well, the actual work turning more into a group art project and he enjoyed every moment of it.
Paul loves the Sunday picnics at the beach, the Tuesday dinners he makes for her after which they binge the latest series Y/N heard is worthwhile, driving her to work while singing at the top of their lungs, slow dancing on the porch, kissing in the shower, making her scream his name long into the night, waking up to the smell of Y/N making pancakes almost as much as her smile whenever heâd wrap his arms around her waist in their kitchen.
Their.
That felt so good â sharing his life with someone who loves him so deeply and he canât believe that all those years filled with uncertainty, suffering and hopelessness have come down to this. Once a lost boy had grown into a man with so much love in his heart thatâs pouring out of every pore and for once heâs calm, inside and out.
Almost a year after imprinting, Paul hadnât shifted in a long while. Most wolves donât shift after having met their imprints unless thereâs danger on horizon. The younger ones have taken over patrols again, allowing the older members of the pack to lay their responsibilities to rest for now. Itâll take a few more years before heâs able to see the difference, before he can start aging properly, but it will happen and heâs no longer appalled by the sentiment of growing old. Falling in love with Y/N and their life made that happen â heâs craving it.
And yet he can still feel somethingâs not right. Sheâs happy, heâs certain of it, but something broke in her the day he returned from his fishing trip.
Jacob left the same day and itâs impossible to ignore the sadness lingering in her eyes since then.
Y/N felt her heart chip like porcelain as Jacob walked out of her life for the second time now. When she learned of the pack and their secrets, part of her thought it meant she can have her best friends back and nothing needed to change. Theyâd find a way to pick up the pieces and carry on, create new memories and forge a new kind of friendship â the one that lasts through the best and worst of times.
âSo you justâŠabandon everything to go back to wherever the hell she is?â Y/N snaps at Jacob.
âMy imprint needs meâ, Jacob sighs. âWe may not be a romantic match like you and Paul, but when she needs me I canât ignore her call.â
Snorting in disgust, Y/N shakes her head. âItâs slavery.â
âItâs imprintingâ, Jacob reminds her.
Swallowing thickly, she nods. âWhen will you come back?â
âI donât know.â
âI need better than thatâ, she grumbles. âI donât care who she is, youâre MY best friend.â Taking his hands in hers, Y/Nâs bottom lip quivers. When she speaks, her voice is quiet, shaky. âI just got you back.â
âYou donât want to hear this, but itâs the best thing for us.â
âHow can you say that?â She narrows her eyes at him. âWhatever issues we have, we can solve them together but if you go nowâŠitâs high school all over again.â
âYouâll be okayâ, Jacob tell her.
âNo, I wonâtâ, she chokes back a sob. âYouâre the only one who knows me.â
âPaul is your imprintâ, Jacob grimaces, âand while Iâm not particularly delighted by it, he loves you.â Letting out a weak sigh, Jacob trains his eyes on their intertwined hands. âHeâs loved you quite a long time and itâs time for you to let him in.â
Shaking her head, she sniffles. âItâs not the same. Youâve been with me since as long as I can remember.â
âSo was Paulâ, Jacob reminds her. âYou just didnât pay him any attention.â
Closing her eyes, she lets a tear crumble her poise. âIf I loved you the way you want me to, would you have stayed?â
Blinking fast, Jacob smiles meekly. âI donât think that would have helped. Iâd be itching to come back sooner, thatâs for sure.â
âWould she even let you come back?â
âMaybe.â
âI hate that youâre shackled to a preteen and her whims.â
Forcing a smile, Jacob shrugs. âItâll do us good to be apart a bitâŠlet the emotions settle.â Licking his lips, he locks his gaze onto her. âIâll do a better job at burying these feelings for both our sakes.â
âYouâll call, wonât you?â
âAnd text you every day.â
Nodding, she lets out a shuddered breath pass her shaky lips. âYou better.â
âI promise.â He pulls his hands back to his lap, and Y/Nâs eyebrows furrow. She isnât ready to let him go just yet.
âDonât make promises you might be unable to keep.â Y/N warns and he leans in, cupping her face with his now free hands. âYou made me promises before and I ended up alone for a decade.â
âThings are different nowâ, his nose brushes hers and he pulls back. âIâll come back.â
âIf you donât, Iâll be raising an army to destroy your little clanâ she remarks.
âExcept you canât hurt her without killing meâ, Jacob quips.
Rolling her eyes, Y/N grimaces. âI donât like these wolf rules.â
âNeither do Iâ, Jacob musses, leaning his forehead on hers.
Both of them know how intimate this moment is, how wrongly it can be interpreted. If anyone walked in on them now, there would be hell to pay. How can you explain a love like this? Even underneath the feelings Jacob unearthed, his love for Y/N is indescribable. Itâs as if sheâs the soil from which he grows, as if heâs the sky in which she shines â theyâve always been inseparable â platonic soulmates she called it before and he agrees. Even without an imprint bond, theyâre soulmates.
Another year passed by, Y/Nâs heart a little lighter now. While work has been stressful, she always looked forward to seeing Paul leaned on his truck in the parking lot. Heâd smile and kiss her hungrily before asking about her day. Sometimes heâd have a rose hidden behind his back, other times take out if his day was exhausting as hers, making sure neither would have to cook that night.
Looking over at him, she could notice a few light wrinkles when heâd crinkle his eyes. Running the back of her index finger across his cheek, sheâd elicit a worried look from her beloved. Somehow, the imprint bond seemed stronger despite him not shifting in nearly two years now.
âWhatâs wrong, my beautiful dove?â
Inhaling sharply, she shrugs it off. âNothing, just in awe of you.â
âI know Iâm gorgeous, but I felt thatâ, Paul glances at her. âI felt the way your heart ached for a moment there.â
âItâs kind of annoying how easily you can dissect what Iâm feeling.â
âImprint perkâ, he winks.
Huffing, she furrows her eyebrows. âIâm not sure it is.â
âWhat do you meanâ, he lowers the volume on the radio.
âDonât you ever get bored of feeling my feelings? Does it never affect you negatively?â
âWell, I could do without the PMSâ, Paul snickers and she scowls at him.
âBe serious!â
âI amâ, he insists. âIâm not burdened by it. It helps me make sure youâre alright. Sometimes I react, other times I let you come to me. Itâs not science, but Iâm trying to be respectful just like I know youâre being respectful by letting me make my own choices.â
âAre you thanking me for not enslaving you like Renesmee has done so with Jacob?â
âIs that why youâre mad?â Paul frowns. âWhenâs the last time you heard from him?â
âA few months nowâ, she admits. âHe promised heâd be around and now all I get are a few texts from time to time.â
âWant me to call him?â
Chuckling, she shakes her head. âI donât need you to rough him up. I just wish I knew what was going on. Last I heard the Volturi were messing with them again.â
Paul falls silent. His hands grip the steering wheel tighter, his jaw clenching.
âDo you know something I donât?â Y/N turns in her seat, her eyes focusing on her imprint. Heâs anxious and heâs almost shaking and itâs the first time in a long time sheâs seen him struggling to keep shifting at bay.
âPaul?â She calls his name, her hand resting over his white knuckled one. âBreatheâ, she says sternly, rubbing his knuckles gently. âBREATHEâ, she repeats louder and Paul blinks, finally breaking out of his trance.
Huffing, he shakes his head as if to clear the fog before sniffling, glancing at her hand recoiling from his once she realizes heâs not going to shift.
Y/N didnât talk for the rest of the drive and neither did Paul.
Once inside the house, she turns to him with uncertainty. Placing a hand over her chest, she lets out a heavy sigh. Staring at his back, she speaks.
âDo you feel that?â
Without skipping a beat, Paul nods. âIâm sorry.â
âYou scared the crap out of meâ, she states.
âI know.â
âWe could have crashedâ, she reminds him.
âI know.â
âWhat if you shifted in the car?â
âI know.â
âIf you know, tell me what the fuck was that?â She steps in front of him. âWhy did me mentioning Volturi make you freeze up?â
Licking his lips, Paul rubs his forehead. âI donât think youâd want to know.â
âI sure as hell do!â
âWhat did Jacob tell you about them?â Paul raises his eyebrows.
Swallowing thickly, she leans on the counter. âThat theyâre vampire royalty and they hate the Cullens and especially his imprint. That they tried to wage war against them but failed.â
âDid he also mention the pack was standing with the Cullens because of his imprint?â
Nodding faintly, she waited for Paul to continue.
âOne of their so called family members has the power to see the future.â
âAlice.â
Paul nods. âShe saw me die in that clearing that day.â
Y/N felt her heart stop with his words.
âLeah, Seth too. Iâm pretty sure most of us would be dead now.â
âAnd hearing the Volturi are back in the game reminded you of thatâ Y/N realizes. âWhat happens if they come back here?â
âDependsâ, Paul pinches the bridge of his nose. âIâm sure theyâd like the pack gone, but their main concern are the Cullens.â
âSo as long as theyâre gone, you are safe?â She raises her eyebrows in concern, looking at him with a childlike fear in her eyes, simmering with anger over all the traumatic events her Paul had to go through.
Walking toward her, his hands rest on her hips before he pulls her closer to his chest. âWeâ, he corrects her. âWe are safe. Maybe thatâs why Jacob cooled on communications.â
Wrapping her arms around Paul, Y/N couldnât find comfort in any of it. Somewhere out there is a royal family of immortal beings that crave revenge and they would see her entire world burn for amusement.
How can she ever forget that and live a normal life?
What has Jacob gotten himself into?
For the next year, Y/N worried. Itâs become the only constant in her life. Paul couldnât help but worry too â not just about the Volturi, but about Y/N. He noticed her researching the cold ones as well as many myths and legends surrounding creatures even he didnât believe were real.Â
He watched her smile but it didnât always reach her eyes.
Jacob called her for her birthday, it was brief and even then she didnât seem to pay mind to it. Something else stirred in her heart and their conversation opened a door that let raging fire inside of her. Paulâs not exactly sure what her goal is â does the research help or make it worse, but he started researching with her. Instead of Tuesday binge watching shows, they read books on the supernatural creatures.
Paul made sure she didnât completely close up. He had the other imprints take her out, even going as far as asking Embry to breathe some life into her.
âDid you die?â
âWhat?â Embryâs eyes widen at her question, nearly choking on his milkshake.
âIn Aliceâs visionâ, she clarifies.
âI didnât ask. Itâs not something I wanted to know.â
âWhy not?â
âBecause that future where everyone went to battle wasnât real and it wouldnât come true.â Embry frowns. âWhy are you obsessing over this?â
âIs that what Paul called it?â
âNoâ, Embry tries but her unyielding stare saw right through him. He could never lie to her. âMaybe.â
âIâm not obsessing. Iâm arming myself with information.â
âWhat can you do with said information?â Embry raises his brows. âYouâre human and I know you hate hearing that, but if shit goes down, youâll be far from here. Paul would make sure of it and I would too.â
Shaking her head, she bites her lower lip. âYou guys have no concerns then? It doesnât keep you awake wondering if those things will come back to eradicate your kind?â
âSometimesâ, Embry shrugs before reaching across the table for her hand. âBut I canât dwell on what ifs and forget to live my life. I hope you remember that too. We are not at war, there is no imminent danger looming over our heads, but you do have a loving boyfriend who is terrified about your sudden shift in behavior.â
Inhaling sharply, she turns to the window. âIâm scared something will happen and Iâll be a useless lawn ornament.â
âBest thing you could ever do when these things happen is stay safe. Thereâs nothing worse for a wolf to lose an imprint and Paul would rather die than risk your life.â
âThatâs exactly what Iâm afraid of.â
It felt easier to breathe after her conversation with Embry. What helped was also him asking her for ideas on proposing to Daisy. In a few days, she was sipping champagne with the rest of the pack, watching her high school crush propose to his soulmate and she couldnât help but lean into Paul more. Her arm wrapped around his waist, pulled up to his side the entire night.
Swaying lightly to music, her eyes sparkled when sheâd look up at him, her smile growing wider whenever sheïżœïżœïżœd see him looking back.
âI love the white shirtâ, she steps in front of him, hands on his shoulders. âYou look very handsome in it.â
âI always look handsomeâ, Paul grins, âbut Iâll accept it makes me handsomer.â
Chuckling, she wonders if thatâs even a word while standing on her tiptoes to peck his jaw. âYou smell nice too.â
âItâs the perfume you got me.â
âAweâ, she wraps her arms around his neck, barely keeping her toes on the ground, âYou wore it for meee!â
âAnd youâre a bit drunkâ, he smirks. âI kinda like it.â
âCause Iâm ditsy when drunk?â
âI was going to say carefreeâ, Paul states, an air of sadness behind his words. Itâs been a while since he saw her so happy, so light and freeâŠjust flirting and enjoying the night.
Resting her head on his chest, she begins to sway to the music and he follows. âIâm sorry I worry you.â
âI like worrying about youâ, Paul kisses the top of her head. âBut I love when youâre happy more.â
âI donât want you to dieâ, she looks up at him, eyes brimming with tears.
âAnd I wonâtâ, he places a hand on her cheek. âWeâre not in danger. I havenât even shifted in the past...two and a half years.â
âIâve noticedâ, she smiles weakly, running her fingertips under his left eye. âIt means youâre catching up to me.â
âA little ahead of you. Iâve got a few years of wisdom over you, donât you remember?â
Snorting, she nods. âIâm dating an older man.â
âYouâre living with an older manâ, he reminds her.
âAnd one day weâll get married and have a few kidsâ, she begins.
âWhen the kids go off to college, we will travel more and when we turn grey and see the world, we will spend time reading on the porch while sipping on your damned teasâ, Paul continued.
âOh you love my teaâ, she beams.
âI really fucking doâ, Paul captures her lips effortlessly, pulling her closer until thereâs nothing between them â not even air.
Her fingers tangle in his shoulder length hair and he canât help the light moan passing his lips, breaking the kiss. Smug, her lips spread in a grin, watching him bite his lower lip.
âYou unravel me way too easilyâ, Paul admits defeat.
âI just know what you love.â
âYouâre at the top of that list.â
âMhmmâ, her eyes light up as her lips near his. âAnd youâre at the top of mine.â
And they lived in bliss. For a while. At the four year mark, Paul got down on one knee during a Sunday picnic. The weather seemed to despise his idea of a romantic afternoon for the skies seemed to rapture above them when Y/N agreed to marry him without a shred of doubt in her mind or heart.
Perhaps the weather should have been a warning of things to come. After all, nature knows things we do not and on that day, it was screaming at Paul and Y/N.
Unfortunately, those screams fell on deaf ears of a pair in love who were blind to the rest of the world and the dangers that indeed lurked in the depths of the forests surrounding their reserve.
The same night, while Y/N slept soundly in their bed, Paul had awakened in cold sweat. His eyes wide, mouth open, Paul struggled to breathe, grabbing at his throat desperately, still feeling the pain of what this night brought - a rather familiar nightmare.

Friday's school day came and went. Jasper even returned Aurora's sketch book. Bella and Aurora were at La Push when the infamous Jacob Black came. "Aurora, this is my friend Jacob, and Jacob, this is my friend Aurora." She waved as he gave a nod.
Jacob swept Bella away down the shore while Aurora sat on the beach blanket reading. A figure sat next to her. "Hey."
She looked up,"Hi."
He was tan, had a sharp yet round face, and had long black hair. It suited him. He was handsome. "Whatcha reading?"
Aurora turned the cover, "The Kite Runner."
"Any good?"
"Seeing as in halfway through with it and I just started yesterday, yeah, I'd say it's pretty good."
The boy laughed, "By the way, names Embry."
"Nice to meet you, name's Aurora."
"Like the princess?"
"I guess, but it's more of a family name."
"It's a pretty name for a pretty girl." Aurora blushed. It was a little cliche, but it was smooth. Aurora thanked him, and the two sat in silence, comfortable silence.
Bella and Jacob were quick, coming back, and then him and his friends headed out. Before the trip left, Embry turned back to Aurora. "You have a piece of paper and a pen."
Aurora nodded. "In the van." He helped her up, and she gave him what he asked for.
He scribbled something on there and gave it to her. "Text me with any other book recommendations." He winked and left.
"Really Aurora, another one?" Bella asked jokingly. Aurora and Bella got dropped off at Aurora's, and neither parent was home.
"What is this like⊠the third date?" Aurora asked. Bella nodded.
"I think so." They came inside, and Jacinda was there, Sudoko in hand.
"Hice sopa, pero estĂĄ un poco frĂa. Lo calentarĂĄ cuando tenga hambre."
"Okay, thank you. We'll eat in like an hour, Abuela." The older women nodded and waved them off. They were breaking her concentration.
The girls went up to Aurora's room. "So Jacob was telling me that there's a legend about the tribe's enemies, the Cullen's."
"Oh my god, really? What the fuck?"
"Yeah, something about them being cold ones and having this feud."
"Like vampires?" Aurora asked.
"I'm assuming."
Aurora worked it out, "I mean, it would explain their fast speed, how they were able to stop the car, and their weird changing color eyes."
Bella nodded rapidly,"Right! I feel like no one's noticed that they have gold eyes !"
"Yeah, I'm not sure why everyone thinks that's normal. But this is crazy. Vampires? What next werewolves? Pixies? Elves?"
Bella shrugged, not having an answer.
"I mean... I don't know Bella. Do they look like blood suckers?"
Again, Bella shrugged. "Oh! Besides that, I gave Jacob your number to give to his friend Embry?"
"Bella!"
"What? I mean, that whole thing with Jasper was a bust, right? Asshat, remember?"
"Well, what about Jacob, huh? Edward, asshat remember? Are you gonna move on with him?"
"Jacob is just a friend."
"Suuuure a 'friend.'"
Bella shoved Aurora's right shoulder with her left hand. "Damn trying to break my other shoulder, Bells?"
The weekend was spent with the two girls watching movies and doing homework. Also, I texted Embry about different books, but Bella was unaware of that. Sunday morning, Bella went home to change and shower. That morning, after Bella left, Aurora took her sketchbook and supplies and headed downstairs.
"Mama, can I go outside to sketch?"
"Yeah, but not for long. I don't need you to get lost." Aurora rolled her eyes and said a quick 'bye.'
Aurora walked to the tree line, memories of Jasper and her meeting replaying in her head. She sighed and ventured in.
She went to the same place where she met him and started to sketch. She sketched a circle, then a U, then 2 smaller ovals inside. Her flicks of lead were light and airy. After 30 minutes of drawing, the face she drew bared a remarkable resemblance of a certain blonde that she didn't want to think about. She drew him a brooding expression and stained, sharp teeth dripping blood.
She huffed and flipped the page. She thought of Embry and started a new face. She drew probably a face that looked similar to Embry but didn't capture him. On the 2nd one is when she was able to capture his likeness and energy.
She drew another Jasper, not finishing it, though, once she realized it was him. She drew his eyes. A grin with sharp teeth that she'll deny is his.
She drew until the sun went down. She squeezed in a drawing of her mom and grandma, her mom with a tiara and her grandmother smoking. She drew 2 outlines of faces of what could have Bella and Charlie, but she shut it after that. A piece of paper stuck out from the very beginning. It was lined paper.
She opened it and saw a number and Jasper Hale's cursive writing there.
'Here's my number Princess, text me when you can.'
Aurora assumed this was before the whole car ordeal. It had the nickname princess, which Jasper had, and stopped calling, hell even acknowledging her. She wanted to crumple it and rip it, but there was that tiny inkling of hope that this was his way to reconcile.
She entered the number on her phone. She hovered around the keyboard when a message popped up.
'Hey Aurora, got the kite runner! U were right, it is great, better hurry and finish it before I beat u ;)'
Aurora smiled at the message as she messaged back.
'Puhlease I'm on the last chapter. How are u gonna beat me?'
She felt as if someone was watching her, she looked up and around but there was no one there. Feeling slightly uneasy, she started to head home.
Jasper watched as she left. He had seen her frustrated drawings of him, which made him chuckle, but it was replaced by worry when she started to draw someone else.
He glared at the drawing of a boy he did not know. He wanted to step out of his hiding spot, to go and apologize, but when she read the paper and texted someone else, he stopped himself. This is what he wanted, no? For her to not be mixed up with vampires. To not be around her and constantly want to drain her?
He rushed home, angry at himself, at Edward, at vampires, but mostly at himself for letting her into his life and heart and then leaving her.
Everyone was hit with an intense rage when Jasper entered home. Carlisle and Esme shared a look. Him and Edward had been brooding the past two weeks or so, and it made the house unbearable. He hoped soon that the boys would change their mind, he honestly couldn't stand it anymore.
Esme knocked on Jasper's door, "Jaz?"
He took a deep breath, "Yeah?"
"You okay, honey?"
He nodded, not wanting to speak about her. Esme sighed at the boy's lack of communication. "Just know that whoever she is, I'm sure if you talk to her and apologize for whatever you have done, she'll forgive you."
"How do you know it was I who did something? And if that's even what I'm upset about? And what .... what if she won't?"
"A mother knows Jasper. Now, decide on what you're gonna do because this moping and being angry is not good for you." She gave a smile and left. Now it's time to talk to the sulking Edward.
Monday came, and Jasper was still undecided. Aurora was giving him the same treatment, and he couldn't blame her. She looks cute in her long sleeve cut sweater and dresses over her. He especially liked how it hugged every curve.
'Focus.' He slapped himself internally. Aurora's phone slightly buzzed, and she smiled at it.
He scowled, 'Who the fuck was making her smile like that.'
She didn't answer it, though, seeing as they were still in class discussing the book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Jasper skimmed the book but didn't read it fully. But he was going to buy tomorrow, he had all night. Once the class ended, Aurora checked the phone.
'Hey Aurora! Me, Jacob, and Paul stole a few drinks and are gonna drink it by a meadow place, wanna join? Bella should be going, Jacob texted her.'
'Sure, but only if Bella's going. Buddy system and all, plus my mom won't let me without her lol.'
'Sweet! See you after school.'
'Hey Bella you going after school ?'
'Yeah I want to see if Jacob found anything else.'
'Oh smart. Okok.'
She left, and Jasper watched her go. The day went by in a blur. Aurora and Bella texted their parents, saying they would walk and explore the woods a little bit with Jacob. Amora was on the fence, but Charlie convinced her that Jacob was a good kid and knew the forest well.
The 5 of them meet up and head by the meadow, opting to stay in the trees rather than the flowers.
They brought wine coolers and shots. Aurora was a little worried, she's never drank before. Bella declined the drink, but Aurora took a wine cooler. She was a little tipsy, as was Paul and Embry. Jacob had one, and Bella none.
Bella started her interrogation. And Paul was dozing off next to them. Embry and Aurora sat a little further away.
"The Kite Runner crushed me, Aurora."
"Oh, you finally made it to that part. I will not lie. It just gets sadder, I cried and cried." Her eyelids were a bit heavy.
"Nooo, you're lying." Aurora shook her head, and Embry slumped on her right shoulder.
"It's so sad, but I can't put it down."
"I know what you mean. It's for school, but I read ahead, and I couldn't stop myself." She giggled. The world was slightly swimming.
Embry wasn't as tipsy. His body heat was a little higher than usual the past day, and two he's drank before. He smiled at her.
"Any other recommendations?"
"For books ummmmmm no? Oh ! But for movies it's called... called um... oh Pans Labyrinth. So fucking good. Amazing."
"Oh well, when you put it like that, I have to see it now."
"Embry, we have to go!"
"Oh, I don't think we should leave Aurora like this by herself, or well for Bella to deal with."
"I've got her." A voice spoke from the clearing as Jasper emerged.
"Who are you?"
"Jaz!" Aurora said happily.
"You know him?" Embry asked hesitantly.
Bella spoke up this time, "Yeah that's her seat mate for like every class."
Jacob eyed him, "We have to take Paul home before he gets in trouble again. Plus he's burning up." He leaned towards Bella ,"Is he safe? Can you trust him with Aurora?"
Bella nodded. "Yeah, plus he's Edward's brother."
Jacob narrowed his eyes, trusting him a little less now.
"Go, go. Jaz and I will be fine here."
Bella wanted to go with Jacob, he was gonna search his library for her but she didn't want to leave Aurora alone.
"It's okay, Iâll stay-,"
"No go Bella, shoo."
"But Aurora-,"
"I said shoo!" She waved a dismissive hand.
"I'll take care of her Bella, I'll call you off her phone once she sobers up and is home."
Embry stayed quiet till now. "Sleepy?"
"Hm?" She gave a smile and her eyes crinkled. His heartbeat quickened and Jasper rolled his eyes at him.
"Call me if you need anything okay?"
She furrowed her eyebrows but nodded. "Okay Em's got it." She gave a thumbs up and Embry looked Jasper up and down.
Bella nodded and left with the three boys. She could trust Jasper with Aurora.
Aurora looked into Jasper's eyes,"Hmm. I've missed you, cowboy."
Jasper nodded, "I've missed you too, princess."
Aurora smiled and hugged him, "It feels so long since you called me that. It feels nice." Jasper could feel the blossoming happiness when he said her nickname.
He felt like shit. He doesn't know how much longer he could ignore her. "Come on, princess, let's get to mine since it's closer, I'll get you water, and then we'll head to yours."
She nodded, tiredly. "Okay Princess, get on my back."
Aurora shook her head no, "No, I'm too heavy."
"You're not darlin ', now come on."
She eyes him wearily, he was taller and looks strong, but still, Aurora was self conscious about her weight.
He slightly crouched, "Come on, little lady."
Aurora wanted to die of embarrassment. She lifted a leg and he gripped it, she lightly hopped up and he grabbed the other.
"Light as a feather, now hold on." She held on, but her eyelids were feeling heavy. He heard her heartbeat steady and ran towards his house up to his room.
He laid her down on his bed carefully because of her cast. He only had one because he liked to lay on the bed to read.
Everyone home heard the heartbeat. Esme walked up to his room, "Jaz?"
"This is the girl, she um... "
"Drank?"
He nodded, "But she isn't the type of girl to drink."
Esme nodded, "A lot of teenagers drink, and it looks like this was her first time."
"She only had a wine cooler."
Esme chuckled, "Oh my. Well I'll get you some water and I can run to the store to get some food."
Aurora woke up, and Esme was done shopping at 5.
She looked around and found Jasper reading their class assigned book. "Um."
He looked towards her, "Hey there, little miss. Feeling better?"
"My head hurts a little, but yeah, I'm okay. Where's my phone? And how did I get here?"
"The pack boys had to head home since one of them was sick. Bella went with them after I said I'd help."
"So she just left me with you?"
Jasper nodded, "Here, she wants you to call after you wake up."
Aurora nodded, and grabbed the phone. She called Bella who picked up instantly.
"Bella?"
"Aurora how are you feeling? Jasper said he'll help-"
"Bella what the fuck?"
The line went quiet, "You just left me with a semi random dude. I get it, you kind of know him and I like him but at the very least you should've come with us! If the roles were reversed and it was asshat Edward helping, there is NO WAY I'd just leave him with you drunk."
Bella was in shock. It had crossed the back of her mind, but she didn't think Jasper would ever do anything like that.
"But it's Jasper, h-."
"I don't care, it's fucked up Bella."
Bella wanted to cry. She didn't want Aurora to be in trouble, and Jasper seemed like the safest option.
"I'm so-,"
"Bye."
She hung up. Her eyes were watery. From one point, she understood, Jasper and her had a thing, and he was responsible and respectful, but still, to leave her alone when buzzed was just not something you do.
"I'm sorry. I just offered my help because Bella seemed stressed, and I didn't want you two to stumbling around the forest alone."
She nodded.
"I would nev-."
"I know. What bothers me is how Bella just left. Even the nicest guys have a wicked side, and that's not saying I think you're a murder or rapist or whatever. It's just the principle."
He nodded, understanding. "I understand, Princess."
She nodded, not realizing he was saying her nicknames. "Are you hungry? My mother is cooking you something."
"Oh god, did I make a fool of myself in front of your family? Fucking christ strike me now."
Jasper laughed, "No, I took you straight up, you passed out."
"That's it. Your mother probably thinks I'm some like hooligan that drinks all the time and does like drugs and is a bad influence."
She groaned and dropped her head in her hands. Jasper shook his head, "No, she knows you're a good kid, and sometimes even those kids want to try a taste of the bad side."
She shook her head, "That's it, I'm done for. I can't go and face her."
He laughed again. "If anything, I'm sure she thinks I'm the delinquent."
"Jasper Hale? The Forks High Bad Boy? Puhlease more like their western cowboy."
"First off, you're correct. Second off, I can be bad."
"Yeah, and the skies are red."
Jasper grinned. "I could've sworn it was, princess. Now come on, my mother is expecting you."
"You're positive that I'm not on her bad side?"
"Cowboy's honor." He said, raising his right hand.
She shook her head. Jasper clasped their hands together and led her down stairs.
Aurora's phone dinged, and it was her mother.
'Cariño where are you!
Bella went home to Charlie's and was crying. Are you okay, mi amor?'
'Sorry mama I forgot to tell you I'm at Jaspers to work on our AP history homework and honors chem.
And yea we got into a small fight...'
'AURORA!
Next time ask ! so im not worried out of my mind thinking your missing in the woods or something!'
"Can we pop outside really quick? For I can call my mom."
"Of course, this way." He led them around the leaving room, so a door outside. "Here, I'll be in the living room."
She called her mom, who picked up instantly, too. "AURORA EVANGELINE CORDOVA FLORES!"
Aurora winced, great her full name.
"Hi mama."
"¥No me mames!
"Jasper's."
"ÂżYa casi has terminado de estudiar?"
"Almost. They invited me to stay over and eat, though. I called you to explain and ask."
"Okay, fine, you can stay and eat over there. And if whatever Bella did isn't too bad, try to fix it, okay?"
"Why, so you and Mr. Charlie can go out on dates? How many more before you officially tell us? 2 or 1?"
"AURORA!"
"It was a joke! Sorry, sorry, I was trying to lighten the mood."
"Yeah, wait til you get home."
"I was just playing," she whined.
"Yeah, yeah. Now go finish studying and go eat and come home, okay?"
"Okay, Mama."
"I love you cariño, see you soon."
"I love you too, Mama, see ya."
She hung up and walked over to the glass door. She opened it, she felt weird stepping inside with shoes. She opened it, and Jasper was there smiling at her. "So, are you staying princess?"
"Yeah, I can, but after I have to go straight home."
He nodded. Of course, he heard, but she wasn't going to tell her that. "Alright, let's go get you something to eat." He grabbed her hand again, and her stomach flipped.
He led her towards the kitchen, and there, Esme and Carlisle, were cooking chilaquiles? They were frying the tortillas and had cheese on the side, and eggs out and fresh salsa? Aurora was a little surprised.
Emse saw the couple and washed her hand from cutting the onions and tomatoes.
"Hello there! You must be Aurora, we've heard so much about you! It's lovely to meet you." Aurora glanced at Jasper, who conveniently was looking where.
"Hello! It is lovely to meet you as well. Jasper's mentioned you, but he didn't tell me you were so beautiful."
Esme chuckled, a bit of flattery never hurt.
"Hello, Dr. Cullen."
"Carlisle is just fine, Aurora. How is that shoulder holding up?"
"It's doing well, Mr. Carlisle. Sore and achy every now and then, but good."
He chuckled at Mr. Carlisle. "That is very good to hear. Don't forget to schedule that appointment." He wanted to ask her to remind Bella as well, but after that conversation, he thought it would be best not to.
"Here, take a seat. We made chilaquiles for you. Jasper mentioned you are of Mexican descent, we spent a couple of ye-months in Jalisco and picked up a couple of recipes."
"Oh, really, that's so cool! My family is from Jalisco." Aurora noticed the slight slip up but didn't acknowledge it.
"What a coincidence." Carlisle clapped his hands, finishing off the plating.
It looked pretty good. There was only one plate, though. "Oh, are you guys not going to eat?"
"Oh no dear we ate before you came over and are pretty full still." Aurora nodded, and started to eat.
"This is really delicious. Thank you again."
Esme smiled, "No problem, dear. So tell me about yourself, Jasper has never brought anyone home." None of them did.
"Oh, um, I'm 16. I have Jasper in every class besides the last one that I have with Alice. I read a lot, draw a lot, listen to a lot of music. Oh, um, I live with my mom and grandma. We just moved her from LA."
Esme nodded. "Wow, you just turned 16, and you're a junior?" She nodded. Esme had a glint in her eyes.
"You're a very bright girl. I'm glad you and Jasper are together." Aurora's eyes darted to Jasper's.
"Oh, we're not together."
"Oh? And why not?"
She glanced up at Jasper, "I have no clue, Mrs. Esme, ask Jasper."
Esme and Carlisle laughed, and Jasper rolled his eyes. Aurora thanked them again for the food and gave them both a hug. "I hope you come back, dear."
Aurora nodded, not knowing what to say. Jasper took a car this time, a BMW. Fucking christ, Carlisle had to be a nepotism trust fund baby because fuck this house, cars, and motorcycles.
They drove in silence until Aurora spoke. "So, are you gonna go back to ignoring tomorrow?"
Jasper sighed, "Aurora, I want us to be close. I do. There's just some things I have to sort out."
Aurora nodded. He was lying. A small ,"Okay," was all she said.
They pulled up to Aurora's, Jasper was going to go open the door for her and walk her, but she got out before he did.
"Thank you for the ride and everything today." She shut the door and walked to her house, not sparing a glance back at him.
Jasper groaned. He was going to hunt for sure tonight. He waited until she was taking off her shoes before driving off.
Amora jumped up and all but ran to the door. She ushered her daughter inside. They sat down at the dining room table, Jacinda was outside smoking, she didn't want to hear Aurora's lecture.
"Aurora. I am going to ask you this once, okay? And you have to answer this honestly."
Aurora winced, "Did you drink?" Aurora looked at her hesitantly and nodded. Amora gave a sharp inhale.
"Is that why you and Bella fought?"
"Kind of."
"What's kind of Aurora?"
Aurora hesitantly spoke, "She left me with Jasper, I was tipsy, I shushed her off, and then she left with Jacob and his friends because he got sick, I think."
"And you fought about her leaving you with Jasper? When you were tipsy?"
"Okay," Amora breathed out, "I am disappointed that you drank Aurora. You're only 16. And I am a little disappointed at Bella for leaving you alone with Jasper when you were drunk. Why did you drink?"
"I don't know, honestly, Mama. They offered me a wine cooler, and I accepted. And I felt a little woozy, and then yeah."
"Was Jasper there the whole time?"
"No, we were walking around the woods by his house and heard us."
Amora didn't even want to ask the question, "Did he do anything?"
Aurora shook her head, "No, he didn't. He let me sleep in his bed while he went off and helped his mom."
Amora sighed in relief, "You were incredibly lucky Aurora, had it been someone else, this talk would be a lot different."
Aurora nodded. "Charlie caught wind from the parents on the reservation. He's already talked to Bella right now. I understand if you don't want to talk to her or, well, stay friends with her. But she does want to speak with you."
"I'll speak to her."
"Okay I'll tell Charlie and they'll come over. Go upstairs." Aurora nodded and went to her room.
About 10 minutes later, Bella knocked on the wood, "Hey."
"Hi."
"I'm sorry."
"Why are you apologizing?"
"I shouldn't have blown up on you li-."
"No Aurora you were right! I shouldn't have left you alone regardless of who it was. I am so sorry Aurora. It was a shitty thing to do and I am a bad friend." Bella had tears streaming down her face.
Aurora did as well. She hugged Bella with her right arm. "We make mistakes, I was lucky it was Jasper and that Jasper is a gentleman and whatnot."
Bella nodded,"But still, even if he's the most upstanding guy, I should've stayed just in case."
The girls hugged while Charlie and Amora could hear them faintly. "I'm sorry again, Amora. I don't-."
Amora shook her head, "Well, it isn't okay, Bella is still a teenager, and sometimes teenagers make the wrong choice. But Aurora isn't hurt, and neither is Bella."

                             Â

Chapter 7: Secrets out
Mia sat down on the porch in front of everyone as the group pulled up chairs around her waiting for her to speak. Her hands twisting in her lap while she watched everyone get settled. Alex was still missing and Brady, Celeb and Colin were out as wolves checking the perimeter but everyone else seemed to be there waiting for her to tell her story. The idea was so strange to her, that the people she had been hanging out with for weeks just magically turned into wolves. Or some sort of genetic thing but Mia liked the idea of magic instead.
âWhy donât you explain now that we are all here.â Sam directed towards her; his arms crossed while his face remained calm. Paul reached over and held her hand while he stared at her also, everyone elseâs attention turned solely on her. Her nerves were getting the better of her but at least Paul helped and wasnât pulling away yet.
âThe reason you guys haveâŠsmelt me? Or the vampire on me because Callie is a vampire. And she came to visit yesterday.â Mia started giving them some time to accept that information, Paulâs hand twitched in hers like he wanted to pull away from her but luckily he didnât.
âWe lived in a small town in New York before I came here. And there was a venue for parties and one of our friends had their sweet sixteen there. When it was over and Callie mom was running late, we told her we would met her at the gas station down the road. The town was super safe, Callie used to walk around all the time and never had any issues till then. We got a snack and sat over by some picnic tables and were waiting when this guy showed up. He was.. creepy. I was closest to him and Callie grabbed me and pushed me behind her and he for some reason became amused by her doing that. He was talking about wanting her to join him and of course we didnât know what that meant at the time.â Paulâs hand tightened his grip on her hand, squeezing it a little too tightly as the rest of the group let out small gasp but remained silent to listen to her story.
âHe moved so fast.. the next second she was on the ground screaming. I.. I didnât know what was happening and then he was just gone. And then I saw her mom and she just stopped acting like she was in pain. So I thought she was fine but when we got back to her house⊠She didnât want her mom to know what had happened and nothing seemed wrong, so I just went with it. I thought everything was okay.â Mia could remember how scared she was, she spent the day wondering if she should tell Callieâs mom but she begged her not to. She knew that something was going on with Callie the next day she stayed in bed, barely moving. But she wasnât screaming and Mia wondered if maybe she had just made the man up or it was just some dream. Maybe Callie was just sick. Anything to try explain the strangeness they went though.
âCallie changed. She got prettier and colder. After the weekend was up she finally opened her eyes and they were this bright red like the mans. I donât know what happened but she moved fast when she threw me against the wall, she went to bite me. I know that now the smelled my blood and I think she realized what she was going to do. So she stopped and just flung herself back onto the bed and sat there for half an hour. When she opened her eyes, she was so terrified. We didnât know what was going on and she didnât try to bite me again so we let it go? We went out that day and tried to find the man, Callie didnât want to me to go with her but I wasnât leaving her alone. And as you guys know.. Callie glittered in the sunlight so we had to wait till night but we found him. He looked so⊠proud. He said what a good job he did. He explained everything and said that they could share me.â Mia shuttered at the memory; Paulâs hand tightened around hers as he glared at the nonexistent man. Quickly kissing his knuckles as she gave him a small smile to let him know it was okay. It was the most comfort she could give him when trying to finish the story without freaking out.
âShe pulled us away after he said that and it confused him. He explained how she shouldnât have been able to stand near me. He expected her to kill me as her first meal. He went to attack and she⊠Well she ripped him apart. Turns out they donât die that way. After she ripped him apart we buried the pieces. Well she did but still. We thought it was fine and just kinda freaked out together. Two days later I was getting ready to go home and he appeared at her living room window fully intact. They fought again and part of him fell into the fireplace. So after she finished him off, we got all the pieces and burned him.â Mia told them, that was a memory she could never forget. Callie looked like she was sobbing but no tears would come out, her body shook while they tried to put the house back together, luckily most of the fighting was done in the backyard. Once everything was done Callie and Mia just sat on the living room couch both crying until her mom came to pick her up a blamed it on some movie they watched.
âThatâs why I said she wasnât a threat because we realized little bit later that she could get rid of senses. It was what she did when she went to attack me. She has been able to redo it since, every couples month she has to but it last longer now. She makes sure the desire doesnât ever come back and just drinks rejected blood.â
Mia stared at everyone when she finished her story, waiting for someone to respond but they all seemed to be thinking it over everything she had told them. She knew it had to be a lot to take in, sure supernatural was normal to them but from this random person dating their friend she doubted anyone would expect that. Specially from what Callie and Mia found out they werenât very common. What were the chances.
âWhy doesnât she smell like the others? You can tell you were around one but itâs off. Normal ones smell sweet and burns our nose. Sheâs just a mild inconvenience type of way.â Jared said leaning forward on his knees while he stared at her.
âI donât know. I never heard anything about the smell and I donât notice it.â Mia said shrugging, Callie smelled the same as anyone else she didnât notice any difference. She didnât even think there was a change between human Callie and vampire Callie.
âI would like to meet her then. See how well this resist to blood is. But we donât usually allow vampires onto our land.â Sam spoke up towards her unsure how to go about this new information.
âOh! She would love to meet you.â Mia chuckled. She could imagine Callie excitement meeting actually werewolves, lots of dog jokes. âI was in a car accident after she changed and there was a lot of blood. Callie was the one that found me and she was fine. Pulled me out and saved me. And she wears contacts now. They are brown which is odd but they hide the red well. Sheâs really not a threat but if needed I can move out of your area. From the stories you guys donât get along.â Mia told them, biting her lower lip while she looked around. She didnât want to leave all of them but she was friends with Callie and one of the last remaining two friends she had from before. She couldnât just leave her.
âYou are not moving further away already. We have so little time left with you around here as it is.â Paul said rolling his eyes unsure how he felt about everything but he knew that she couldnât just leave. They would have to make something work without losing her.
âYou normally would be the one fighting to get her away from them and all of sudden you are okay with it?â Quil turned to Paul. Paul let out a sort of growl as he glared at the younger boy.
âIf she trusts her, I give her some trust. Sam will check her out and so will I.â Paul growled out towards him. Mia eyes widened slightly at the dark tone of his voice; she had never heard Paul sound so scary.
âIâm just saying. You hated vampires more than most of us and now you are just all okay with a random one. You barely tolerated the Cullens.â Quil pointed out, his arms crossed while he stared at Paul. Mia didnât know who the Cullens were but something must have happened with them, she would have to ask about it later.
âTimes have changed. And Iâm not just for it. I donât have much control over it and if Mia telling the truth then she isnât a danger. Even less then the Cullens and you got along with them just fine.â Paul said rolling his eyes. Â
Mia shook her head at them trying to defuse the tension. âYou know nothing you will say will change my mind but you guys have the right to decide obviously.â
The group were still giving her mixed reactions, some chuckled and others were glaring at her. It was making her uncomfortable. She didnât want the group to be mad at her but she also didnât want to lose Callie over this. She sort of already planned around Paul in her life and she didnât really think it would all fall apart so soon.
âAre we done?â Paul questioned, looking at Sam for an answer. Sam nodded his head saying for now. Paul got up and his hand still wrapped around hers pulled her up with Mia following him through the path that led to the beach. Neither said anything to each other while Mia focused on the uneven ground, with Paul helping her out. When they got to the beach it was empty. It was still too early in the morning and it looked like it was going to rain for people to show up. The sky was covered in dark gray clouds, through the hoodie she felt the breeze cause a shiver through her.
âIf it wasnât for me, back then you would be on the side to kill her?â Mia spoke up first keeping her eyes on her feet unable to look up at him unsure how she felt about it.
âYeah, I would have been.â Paul told her honestly.
âWhy would you be on my side now?â Mia wondered, if he believed in it then why would he change his mind now just for her.
âBecause Iâm falling in love with you. And you donât seem like you would risk your life for someone thatâs dangerous. I canât promise Iâll agree completely but I can give it a shot for you at the least.â
âAnd if that puts you at odds with your family though⊠I donât want to be the cause of that.â Mia expressed shaking her head, Paul had such a wonderful life with everyone around him. She wished she could have what he had, sure she had Callie and some other friends and family but most were conditional. Paul didnât have that. They all loved each other and would stand by each other if needed. She couldnât come between that.
âYou wonât be. Theyâll understand where Iâm coming from.â
âHow?â Mia questioned raising an eyebrow at him but Paul looked uncomfortable at the question. Â Paul stopped walking a little further up and sat down on a large piece of driftwood. Running his hand through his hair, shaking his head while he looked up at Mia.
âTheres something else. Itâs part of the wolf thing, I didnât think I would have to tell you so soon but I feel like you need to know.â Paul told her sighing as watched the waves crash over the shoreline. Mia looked at him quizzly but stayed silent while she waited for him to find the words to explain whatever he needed to.
âTheres this thing.. After you turn, it supposed to be rare but were not so sure about that. It happens way too much. But when you meet a person and they are basically your soulmate, the wolves have a way to just let you know. But it becomes more than that. Itâs a love at first but so much more. Your whole live changes, the universe doesnât hold you to it but the person does. Being whoever your person needs is who you become. We call it imprinting.â Paul explained to Mia.
Mia stood in silence, her eyes watching the waves soak the sand while her eyes burned. She knew it was too good to be true. She knew Paul was too good be true. âYou are forced to want to be with me.â Mia spoke up after a bit her voice cracking while she tried to push back the tears. âItâs not you itâs just some sort of magic or science or whatever.â
âNo!â Paul yelled jumping from up from the log, taking Mia face in his hands gently forcing her to look up at him. His thumbs wiping away the tears that slipped down her face. âNo.â He said more calmly. âIt points us in the right direction. Life is messy and itâs so easy to just let people slip out of it, itâs just a helpful thing to direct you. I think if I wasnât a wolf and I met you, we would connect, of course, but it wouldnât be the same. You would travel back to New York and I would be here. Never giving us a chance to figure out how much we care for each other but it just stopped that. Just a jump start at a connection.â Paul tried to explain to her how he saw the imprinting, he was never sure if he wanted to imprint it was a mixed thing. No one seemed unhappy being imprinted but he was happy that it made it so Mia stayed with him instead of going home so fast. He would never know how much he cared for her.
âSo the feelings.. they are real?â Mia asked softly trying to stop the tears.
âYes, yes very real. Itâs not like our relationship is going to be perfect and nothing goes wrong. Weâll fight and get on each other nerves. I will defiantly get on yours all the time. And I didnât love you right away that just comes with knowing what an amazing person you are.â
âBut they said how you changed? I donât want to change you or for you to be less... you just because of me.â
âDidnât you change while growing up? If we had met a few years ago, I donât think anything you could have said would have changed my mind. But we have been through some things, I can explain some another time but Iâm not the angry hot head that I once was.. well as much.â Paul smirked at her. Â âNot everything is the same and the world isnât good guys and bad guys. I would rather have no vampires that is pretty much true but some are decent. And you said she doesnât have the desire to kill which is also a huge help. Iâm not saying Iâm completely cool with it but I canât control you.â Paul said taking her hands in his pulling her close to him as Mia still looked worryingly into his eyes.
âIâm here because I want too. If this is too much and you want to leave, I understand that too.â Paul told her wanting to make sure she had an out. But Mia didnât need one, the world of magic was nothing new to her and what was one more magical creature in her life. Wasnât it a readerâs dream to fall into the world in the books you read. And here she was living in that world. Vampires and werewolves and falling for a man who loves her and living out all her dreams. Mia had a hard time being anything but happy right now.
Reaching up she placed both hands on the side of Paulâs face pulling him towards her to kiss him, she could feel the physical release of Paulâs body when she did as he wrapped his arms around her waist. Mia didnât know how long they stood on the beach but the cold raindrops cut them off. Wrapping her hand into Paulâs as they ran back to Samâs and Emilyâs house to try getting out of the rain.
But when they showed up they were soaked, their clothes dripping over the covered porch as they laughed looking at each other. Â Mia opened up the front door but made sure to stay outside not wanting to soak Emilyâs floors. Quil, Sam and Embry were sitting at the small dining room table talking over what Mia told them. She was embarrassed but she figured she would be a topic of conversation for a little bit at least.
âErm.. Can I have my keys? I would get it but bit wet.â Mia said gesturing to her dripping clothes.
Quil got up from his spot to hand her the keys from where she had left on the counter closet to him.
âI want to say sorry. I shouldnât have said what I said.â Quil told her and looking over her shoulder at Paul mainly but gave her a small embarrassed smile.
âDonât worry about it. I get it.â Paul said forgiving him already, he understood where Quil was coming from, even if it pissed him off when he said it Quil was only pointing it out.
Quill face broke out in a huge smile, removing any sort of tension left behind. âSo I take it you guys are good? No freak out?â He asked looking back at Mia who just shook her head at Quil.
âNot today.â
âGood. Paul would not be fun if you did. Though you did have a cheat to the freaky.â
âDonât make me regret forgiving you.â Paul growled in a joking tone at him, Mia just rolled her eyes at the two of them.
âWell Iâm going to the hotel to get dry clothes since day plans changed. Paul wanna come watch a movie? I think I have your bag in my car with clothes in it too.â Mia said turning back to Paul slightly shivering as a gust a wind blew across the yard. She needed to get out of these clothes before she ended up sick.
âSounds great. Bye guys!â Paul yelled slightly into the house but Paul and Mia ran towards her car in the rain trying to climb in as fast as possible before they answered back. Mia quickly turned the car on and blasted the heat causing Paul to groan but still sat close to Mia to warm her up.
Mia was quiet on the way to the hotel, just going over everything Paul had told her today. It wasnât everyday your boyfriend tells you he can turn into a giant wolf and all of his friends do too. Mia wondered what other creatures were actually real and people just didnât know about them.
âAre you really okay with it?â Paul questioned nervous when they pulled into the parking lot, Mia was able to look at him giving him a small comforting smile.
âI have a vampire best friend. Who only by chance doesnât kill. This is nothing. You are simply more special now. Now letâs get soaked again. Donât forget your bag!â She called out before flinging open the door and quickly running to her hotel door with Paul trailing after her.
Paul quickly ran to the bathroom when they entered as Mia stayed in the main room to get out of the clothes. Once she was dressed in a pair of leggings and a hoodie Paul brought over last time he was here for a movie night, which she was pretty sure he brought over for her to keep since he never seemed to need it⊠which was probably a wolf thing now that she thought about it. But she made her way over to the closed bathroom door giving it a small knock.
âAll clear!â She called out to him giving him a grin when Paul made his way out of the bathroom in a pair of shorts and a tank top. Mia jumped on the bed as Paul curled up next to her, causally throwing his arm over her shoulder and kissing her temple.
Flicking through Netflix to find some sort of movie to watch, when Mia grinned at Paul and turned on the Teen Wolf movie. Paul just groaned at her and pulled her back against himself giving her a grin. âSooo what are wolf things? Clearly turning into wolves and super smell.â Mia questioned him not really paying attention to the movie.
âWe are fast. Faster than blood suckers. Sorryâ Paul said at Mia wince at the word. âVampires. We have really good hearing and eyesight. We stop aging while we are changing. So when we first start the process we age to where we are now and just kind of hit pause for a while.â
âYou donât age?! Why does no one in my life age but me! I mean sure I donât want to be a teen forever but jez.â Mia said rolling her eyes at another person in her life just frozen in time, she almost felt bad for them unable to fully live a life normally.
âIâm sorry.â Paul said laughing. âI will age with you. I just need to stop becoming a wolf and Iâm not sure Iâm ready for that yet.â
âUnderstandable. So this super warm thing, werewolf?â Mia said running her hand down Paulâs arm feeling the heat radiate off of him.
âYupp.â Paul confirmed intertwining their hands together and kissing her knuckles softly. âI donât understand that part. Itâs just a thing that happens.â
âOdd. What else?â Mia questioned, looking up at Paul wanting to know everything about him. Mia was fascinated just as she was when they figured out Callie was a vampire. The two spent hours researching and testing the limits of what Callie could do.
âWe heal faster, skin is tougher both to fight vampires. Oh! When we are in wolf form we can hear each otherâs thoughts. Every little one, even the ones we donât want to.â Â Paull added on like it was no big deal.
Mia raised an eyebrow at the idea of someone in her head, she would hate everyone hearing the strange thoughts that pop in but it would explain why everyone is so close. They had no choice but to be. It was a good thing they all got along or it seems like it would be awful thing to deal with.
âSounds..I dunno. Iâm not sure I would like that.â Mia told him.
âIt has good and bad. You learn to somewhat control your thoughts. Kind of embarrassing when you are remembering kissing a pretty girl and everyone sees it.â Paul chuckled shaking his head.
âHow many pretty girls did you kiss before?â Mia asked teasingly.
âHmmm none as pretty as you precious. And I rather not share my memories of you to them. I want to keep them and you all to myself.â Paul said running his large hand up her arm and placed a hand on her cheek tilting her face up so he could kiss her. Mia rolled her eyes at the response but gladly reacted to Paul.
Mia smiled into the kiss pulling her body close to his as possible, Paulâs hand gripping her sides as she deepened the kiss, throwing her leg over Paulâs so she could straddle him. She could feel Paulâs heat surround her as his mouth moved down to Miaâs neck as she let out a soft moan. They found themselves in this position quite a bit in the last couple weeks but something seemed different. Maybe it was because there were no more secrets between them or maybe it was just the act of getting to know Paul but she wanted more. She wanted him. Taking a deep breath, she pulled back from Paul slightly, grabbing the of the bottom of the hoodie she pulled it off her feeling the cold air against her skin.
Smiling as Paulâs eyes roamed over her body, taking encouragement from it she leaned back forward to kiss him once again, his hands running up her back playing with the back of her bra.
âGo ahead.â She whispered, feeling her cheeks turn a bright shade of red but tried to appear confident. Yes, she was sure she wanted Paul but it didnât help her awkwardness or shyness any. But Paul loved her and she loved him, she just needed to focus on that and maybe his lips trailing across her chest. It was a good distraction to get out of her own head.
âYou sure you want to?â Paul asked seriously, pausing his movement to make sure Mia was fully looking at him and paying attention.
âIâm sure.â Mia confirmed, giving him a smile letting Paul take over control.

Several weeks went by like that. Once a week, I would tell Embry that I was heading to work but would detour to the Cullen household instead. Alice and I would often coordinate together to make sure that Jacob and Renesmee werenât in the area before I showed up. Keeping them in the dark for now still seemed like it was our best option â Jacob wouldnât be able to withhold it from Embry even if he wanted to. In between working at the diner and helping Maddox push the boundaries of his control, I spent every ounce of my free time with Embry and the boys.Â
So many parts of me felt guilty for lying to him â especially when he had been putting forward more effort to fit into my life.Â
The pair of us visited home once every other week to have breakfast or dinner with my family. Embry and the pack spent more time trying including my brothers, which helped integrate them into the pack in their own unique way. It was nice to have Travis part of the mix now, but I still worried that he might get hurt. Understandably so, Sam still had reservations when it came to some of the younger members, but as long as we kept it within the main ranks, he seemed satisfied. With the tension growing thicker between the pack and the obvious need to find the nomads, everyoneâs control had not been the greatest. Jacob and Embry had gotten into it a few times, even Seth and Quil were more on edge.Â
I asked a few times about his mother â she had remarried and moved off the reservation to Tacoma. Had a second child now that Embry was independent and a man of his own. For the most part, Embry didnât speak much about her. Part of me found it incredibly sad; Quil had explained that Tiffany had been incredibly upset and scared during their teen years when the pack first began phasing. Unlike Billy and Sue, Tiffany had no idea about the tribeâs legends, or that there was any possibility they may hold any semblance of truth. Embry was never able to tell Tiffany the truth about what was going on, and the distance put a heavy strain on their relationship.Â
âWhenâs the last time he went to see her?âÂ
Quil shrugged, âNot really sure. Christmas a couple years ago, maybe?âÂ
Vague, but that was Quil. Sure, it wasnât my place to meddle, but Embry had given me such a hard time about maintaining a relationship with my own mother that I thought it was a little hypocritical that he hardly maintained one with his own.
Christmas came and went; Embry opted to âgiftâ me quite a few things, including an actual coffee machine for his kitchen, as well as a pretty white gold chain with a sterling crescent moon cut out. We spent most of our time together on his new couch (which he purchased a few days after he attempted to sleep on the loveseat following my initial run in with Maddox) wrapped in each other's arms with the fireplace going.
Each week, Maddox would return to the Cullenâs with more accurate locations on the safehouses for any vampire Garrett turned, making a total of five by the time the new year had come. Edward would inform Jacob regarding their locations, trying to make it seem as though Alice had seen it in a vision while following the female nomad â Jacob would bring the news home to the others; they then tore through each house one by one tear and destroyed whatever nomad kept residence.Â
I tried not to think about it too much. If I got too caught up in the semantics, things always got bad.Â
There were only three nomads that remained, apart from Maddox. The closer the pack got to taking out the threat, the more uneasy things began to feel at home. Emily was nearing six months into her second pregnancy â bloated and hormonal as ever, causing quite a bit of strain on the pack's eating habits as she was more tired and more hungry. She cared less about feeding everyone else, moreso intent on getting food into her own belly. With no definitive place to gather at, the pack had dispersed their separate ways and only saw each other twice a week as opposed to every day.
Jared and Kimâs wedding was right around the corner, so the pair had been hellbent on having Embry and I help them with the finishing touches. Kim and I spent many late nights and early mornings camping out in Embry and Jacobâs living room, making sure we had a final head count on those invited to the wedding.Â
When it was mentioned that I was still waiting on the Cullenâs to RSVP, I made sure Kim knew I would have Jacob ask to confirm. We were two weeks into January now â Jacobâs birthday had finally come around. Being the first of his friends to turn twenty-five was a big deal for him, and so the group had collectively pulled together what they were sure was the ultimate birthday experience. After what appeared to be a heart-felt dinner celebration, the boys prompted Jacob into a blindfold and carried him out to Paulâs truckÂ
âWeâre taking him to a strip club.â Jared said casually, pulling out a wad of bills larger than I had ever laid eyes on.Â
âA strip club.â I repeated, watching Paul nod excitedly.Â
âWe did this for my birthday last year â lots of lap dances, lots of booze ââÂ
âI see.â I shared a knowing look with Kim, the pair returning to their post-food comatose on Embryâs couch. Kim had agreed to stay the night with me, knowing the boys would not be home until the early hours of the morning and much to everyoneâs dismay, Maddox was still unaccounted for.Â
The idea that a vampire that had previous connections with his imprint was still out made Embry a little uneasy â the longer the pack went without catching his scent, the more erratic he became. I was being babysat as per Embryâs instruction â the only person that knew of Maddoxâs whereabouts apart from myself was Trenton.Â
Speaking of.
âAre you bringing my brothers?â I asked, shrugging my arms into the sleeves of Embryâs heather gray hoodie.Â
âHell yeah,â Jared laughed. âTravis was the one who really pushed for it.â
âThatâs because Travis is lonely and miserable while the rest of us have hot as fuck girlfriends.â Embry cooed as he joined us in the living room, leaning over the back of the couch to press his mouth against mine. He enticed a quiet hum from my chest when he sucked on my lower lip.Â
âBe nice.â I mumbled against his lips, smiling nonetheless.Â
When the men left for the evening, Kim and I sat curled up on our respective sides of the couch, scrolling through our phones. Undoubtedly, Jared messaged Kim just as quickly as Embry messaged me. We spent what appeared to be well over an hour in silence before I lazily pulled the remote from the coffee table and flipped on the television.Â
âI canât believe Iâm going to be a wife.â Kim said into the quiet room suddenly.
I blinked slowly, shifting my eyes to look over at her. She sat upright, eyes wide with a sort of fear. I was sure this was where I was supposed to say something soothing and reassuring but honestly, I couldnât believe it either.Â
Kim and Jared were the least serious couple of the group â which made them the best sort of couple to me. Watching them crack jokes and pull pranks on each other was my favourite pastime â but I knew how marriages worked. They pulled some people apart. And I wanted to believe that wouldnât happen to them, but I knew there was a chance. Nothing was impossible.
âI canât believe youâre marrying Jared.â I retorted, turning my attention back to the television. âHeâs an adult, male version of Claire ââ
âExactly!â Kim huffed, shaking her head. âAins, what am I gonna do? I canât be a wife, I barely know how to cook.â
âDoesnât Jared?â
âYeah.âÂ
âThen you donât have to cook.â I said simply.Â
Kim deadpanned, mouth slightly ajar as I pulled the wrapper off another holiday mint and popped it into my mouth. âHow can you say that?â
I shrugged, shoving my hands into the pocket in the front of the hoodie. âEmbry does all the cooking.â
âYou donât help?â
I rolled my eyes, flipping onto my back. âOf course I will help. I just donât do the cooking â I clean, I do laundry, I wash dishes. I help Emb and Jake make sure the property tax is paid on time and that bills are kept up with â that sort of thing. Youâre already doing most of that on your own, anyway.â
Kim let it all process, chewing on her lower lip. âI donât want to live with a boy. Heâs so messy!â
I could only laugh. âItâs less scary than you think, though Iâm not the one with a ring on her finger.âÂ
âEasy for you to say â Embry makes more money than Jared does. Youâre both sitting on a nice, fluffy cushion of savings, and have the luxury of personal space. Jaredâs losing his shit and can barely afford the place he has now.âÂ
âWhatâs wrong with Jaredâs place?âÂ
Kim rubbed her face with her tired hands. âHe lives in a very small, very tight one bedroom apartment. Weâre both going to be stuck in a very cramped area for a solid year before we can even think about moving out.â
âIt wonât be so bad ââ
âEmbry and Jacob have this entire two story house, Ains. Thatâs not exactly something people making ends meet have the luxury of owning. Youâre already doing better than most people in their thirties.â
I tried to process that information. It hadnât fully dawned on me that Embry and I were better off than most of their brothers â and hadnât realized that Kim and Jared were digging themselves a hole. They were one foot in the door to being in debt, and I was stressing out about not having any spending money after paying off next year's tuition.
âThen why get married right now?â
Kim sighed loudly, shaking her head again, this time with a smile that screamed âisnât it obvious?â. âBecause I love him.âÂ
âOkay,â I lamented, sitting up, âand he loves you. And that isnât going to change â in twenty years from now, youâll still love him and heâll still love you.âÂ
âStop being right,â Kim grumbled, pushing my shoulders so that I fell back into the couch, âcan you make a stupid decision so the rest of us donât feel so brain dead?â
I forced a smile. âIâm already making plenty of bad decisions, Kim.â Just none that you can know about.Â

Jacob nestled into his corner of the couch, watching as Rosalie ran her fingers through Renesmeeâs hair; the trio had been cooped up in the Cullen household all morning. Forkâs was covered under a near constant stream of storm clouds that had yet to let up long enough for him to return home on terms that Nessie deemed âsafeâ. He chalked it up to her wanting some more time with him â which he was always willing to give. In the last seven years, she had grown into quite the remarkable individual. While being incredibly strange to the others in her life, she had a charm that Jacob was certain would bring her sunshine even on the dreariest of days.Â
Bella and Jacob spent many conversations discussing what they considered appropriate in regards to his relationship with Renesmee. Jacob agreed that it seemed beyond normal to expect anything other than a friendship from her daughter. Regardless of what the Elders might have believed, Jake couldnât see past the babyface. There was a small part of him that didnât sit well at the thought of trying to pursue a romantic relationship with her; he genuinely feared there might be a day when Renesemee asked for more, and he wouldnât be able to refuse. That his genes wouldnât allow him â they had taken so much autonomy from his as it was.Â
Instead, Jacob made a vow to be the shoulder to cry on when boys attempted to break her big heart. He would be her best friend and protector â and he would love her unconditionally and always think of her safety and comfortability above all else. He was perfectly content watching over what he considered his family. But that was where it ended â there was nothing romantic about it, or to come of it. He needed to be sure of it, so much so that no one had referred to Renesmee as his âimprintâ since her first few months of life.Â
Small pale fingers touched his knee, pulling his sight into a tunnel before images played in fast-forward: circling glimpses of Ainsley and Emily, along with the unspoken question of their well-being led Jacob to believe that Nessie missed the reservation, and had not felt wanted or welcome since Thanksgiving. The last Nessie had heard from Ainsley was a few weeks ago, just before Christmas. She had gotten a phone call, asking where the Cullenâs resided, mentioning something about wanting to come see her â to apologize.Â
Ainsley had never shown up.Â
Jacob had apologized for his cousin's ignorance many times â tried to explain on multiple occasions that Ainsley just hadnât known about anything. Despite that knowledge, Edward and Bella still believed it would be better if Renesmee remained on their side of the border.Â
This resulted in Jacobâs absence at home â which he soon realized was putting strain on the rest of the pack. Everyone withdrew into their own personal lives again, just when things were finally beginning to look normal. It was so nice, having everyone together all the time. He remembered a time when he hated spending every waking second with a group of rowdy, immature boys but he longed for those days all the time now. The only reason why they had fallen back into old habits was because of Ainsley and Embry â a sort of means to help her feel inclusive. Especially after Embryâs shitshow.Â
It appeared as though Ainsley was tougher than everyone gave her credit for. She handled Embryâs temper like a champ, dutifully stepping up to the plate when the others fell short. Acted as a mother hen whenever Emily couldnât be bothered to scold or bake for the group. But even that had become daunting. In between working and trying to keep up with everyone in her life â the pack and her own family, Jacob could see the strain and exhaustion in Ainsleyâs eyes.Â
Things wouldâve been different now, heâd tell himself. If he could just bring Nessie back to the reservation, if theyâd just let him, he could pull everyone back together again.Â
He offered his best friend a sad smile, and wrapped an arm around her shoulders in a tight squeeze. âIâm sure youâll see them soon.â He promised.Â
âCâmon, Ness,â Rose said quietly, urging her to stand, âletâs get you something to eat.âÂ
âWhat about me?â Jacob complained, watching Nessie disappear into the kitchen.Â
Rosalie looked over her shoulder, the corner of her mouth upturned in an exhausted smile. âYou can fend for yourself, Jacob. Youâre no stranger to our kitchen.â
The wolf scoffed, turning his attention back to the television mounted to the wall. The news was muted, the screen split between the terrors that were turning Seattle upside down for the second time this decade, along with whatever college basketball game was playing in the local area. From his peripheral vision, Jake caught the figure of a stranger trudging up the driveway.Â
It wasnât until said visitor started taking the steps at the front door two at a time that Jacob stood and rushed down the stairs. Obscene anger and rage filled his body, a searing heat bubbling at the surface. The part of him that needed to ensure Renesmeeâs safety overtook his judgement. The scent filled the room before the door had even had a chance to open â Jacobâs hands pressed flat against their shoulders and shoved them hard, sending the body flying back a few several feet.Â
The manâs response was automatic: cold hands gripped his throat tightly, the growl rising from somewhere deep within both their chests. The sounds clashed together, so different but with the same underlying warning. Jacob clenched his fist around one of the vampire's wrists, pulling roughly with a loud snarl, twisting the figure away. Just as quickly, Jacob found himself being hoisted up â not by much â before his body came crashing down on the cement of the stairs, the brick crumbling under his weight and the sheer force of the impact. Jacob heaved in air, desperately trying to breath around the vice grip on his throat; it wasnât until he really looked at the intruder that he stopped struggling.Â
His face was smooth except for the slight stubble that permanently resided on his lower face. His hair fell in loose waves, framing his squared jaw in that sort of subtly perfect way. Every fiber in Jacobâs body, every vein screamed in protest as his scent overwhelmed him. Over some time, he had grown accustomed to the stench of the Cullenâs, but his was different.Â
Familiar, but different.
Jacob thought back, trying to pinpoint where he had picked up on the scent before. Jasper was pulling the man â Maddox, as he called himself â away from Jacobâs limp body, his mind swirling when Renesmee placed her hands on his shoulders, worry and anxiety filling his mind.Â
Jacob shut his eyes tightly, shaking his head quickly as though to clear her thoughts from his head. He had definitely caught this scent before. Not from patrol. Not from a local bar. Not from the diner âÂ
The diner.Â
Ainsley.Â
His eyes shot open, frame bolting forward as quickly as he could manage, tremor rolling down his spine as he collided with the nomadâs body and sent him backwards again â this time far enough that he disappeared momentarily into the underbrush of the forest.Â
âWhatâs he doing here?â Jacob growled.
Maddox stood slowly, readjusting his jacket, amber eyes locked on Jacobâs heaving frame. âControl your guard dog, would you?â He muttered to Jasper, picking a leaf out of his hair.Â
âI thought you said you didnât know where the nomads were.â Jacob accused with heavy disappointment, looking down at Renesmee. She shrugged under the weight of his gaze, seeming just as confused as Jacob.
âHeâs not the problem, Jake.â Jasper said quickly, holding out one hand as a means of halting Jacob from moving forward. âHe came to Carlisle for help. Thatâs all weâre trying to do.âÂ
âYeah, expand the family a little more, itâs not like youâre big enough already.â Jacob spat, pulling his lips back over his teeth. âItâs not like the large quantity hasnât already put enough strain on us before. Whatâs a few more kids, huh?â
âJacob âŠâ
âThere are seventeen of us,â he growled, taking a step to the side, âhalf of them are trying to stop it from happening again, some of them left altogether, and the rest of us are trying to settle down and start our lives.â
âWe didnât turn him ââ
âThis wasnât part of the agreement.â Chief Jacob was slowly starting to break out of shell. Very rarely did Jacob like being the alpha â more so settled into the role because Sam had made a definitive decision to leave it behind. It had been two years since Sam had last phased â two years until the night the nomads crossed onto their land. No one was entirely certain how long it would take to break the bond â Sam stopped after expecting his first child, but now would have to start all over again.Â
Not exactly the stress Emily needed.Â
âJacob.â The wolf tensed, halting his feet from moving as Carlisle came down past the ruins of the stairs and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. âAllow us to explain. Please.âÂ
After an hour of arguments and several hand tremors, Jacob was finally seated in the living room, watching Maddox carefully. So, he had sought out help for control. So, he didnât want to be a vampire. So, he didnât anticipate all of the downfalls to being an immortal bloodsucking killer â what a shocker. That didnât excuse that Jacob couldn't trust his loyalty.Â
âAnd no one knows?â He asked again, squinting his eyes at Maddox.Â
The vampireâs facial features remained smooth and even, his head tilting to the side, âNone of the dogs know, no.â
âWould you stop calling us that?â
âWould you stop trying to find a loophole so you can kill me?â Maddox asked angrily, leaning forward with his knuckles on his knees.Â
Jacob growled inwardly, pulling his eyes away from Maddox. Nessie sat on the other side of the couch, her legs folded under her, her arms wrapped around one of the throw pillows. He could see the wheels in her tiny, brilliant mind turning. She was trying to piece it all together, trying to pinpoint exactly what fit and didnât. What was a lie and what was the truth.Â
âSpeak your mind, kiddo.â Jacob encouraged, folding his arms across his broad chest.Â
She shook her head, gnawing on her lower lip â a human Bella trait she had picked up in the last few years â and sighed. âIt doesnât add up.â Renesmee was looking at Maddox now, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. âHow did you find us? Weâre not exactly easily accessible.âÂ
His amber eyes darted up from the frayed string of his shirt to meet her eyes. He took a few moments before he responded. âI had an inside friend help.âÂ
Renesmeeâs brows pulled together in frustration, letting out a petulant sigh. âWe do have a lot of friends âŠâ She mused to herself, still working to fit two and two together.Â
âGive it up.â Maddox suggested angrily, pushing himself up out of the recliner.Â
Jacob shot him a look in warning. âWeâre just trying to piece it together ââ
His voice boomed, overpowering Jacobâs easily. âTrust me when I say that you, of all people, do not want to know.â There was a certainty to his look. The way his eyes hardened in a definitive way. The way that halted the conversation. Jacob knew that look â Jacob had mastered that look.Â
âWhat do you mean âme of all people?â Apparently Jacob was going to play Paul today â asking useless questions, taking personal offense to the nomads words.Â
âItâs just in your best interest to not know, thatâs all.â
âOh, bullshit.â Jacob bit back, rising to his own two feet. âIf you want an in with this family, youâre going to have to get used to letting me in, bloodsucker.â
âI donât owe you anything.â Maddox laughed, tucking his hair behind his ears. âCute that you think so.âÂ
âJake ââ
âDude, you seriously need to start talking or Iâm going to find a loophole ââ
âJake, stop it ââ
â-- and Iâm going to rip your head off ââ
âJacob, enough ââ
â-- and deliver it on a silver platter to my brothers ââ
âJacob!âÂ
âWhat?â His voice boomed, eyes glowering over to where Renesmee sat, watching the pair anxiously.
She licked her lips, looking over at Carlisle before she looked past Jacob to Maddox. She took a deep breath, and then sighed. âAinsley brought him here.âÂ
Jacobâs face contorted, his brows pulling together and up, confusion littering his face. âWhat? No she didnât.â
âThink about it.â
âI know Ains, okay? She wouldnât help this scumbag ââ Jacob paused.Â
His thoughts snapped back to the afternoon that started the mad-leech hunt. The night before the babyshower. The night Ainsley had come home reeking of one of the leeches, the night Trent had muttered something about how she had tolerated sitting with a scumbag.Â
âMaddox.â He whispered quietly, the last of the puzzle pieces falling together. He lifted his eyes to meet the vampireâs, his face crumpling as guilt registered across the other's face. âShe brought you here.â
âI asked her to.âÂ
âWhy?â Jacob pressed.
Maddox blinked, âBecause this isnât for me. What theyâre doing â to innocent people â isnât me. I came here to learn control, Ainsley helps a lot with that.â
âWait, wait, wait,â Jacob said, holding a hand up, âshe helps?â
âYes, she does.â Carlisle conceded from the archway, leaning against the wood with his shoulder. âIt appears as though the personal human tie he had with Ainsley helps keep him grounded. Weâve made incredible progress in the last few weeks â far more than Jasper was comfortable with in his first few years of this lifestyle.âÂ
Jacob felt his heart sink, the realization hitting him that he was going to be the one to tell Embry.
Tell Embry that his imprint was lying to him.Â
Tell Embry that his imprint was hiding one of the nomads.
Hiding the nomad Embry wanted dead the most. The one he spent nights envisioning, the one he had torn to shreds in his mind over and over again âÂ
âWhy did you tell me this?â He asked angrily at no one in particular. âDo you know what this is going to do? Do you know whatâs going to happen now?â
âYou canât say anything ââ Maddox started, reaching for Jacobâs arm.
âThe fuck I canât.â He growled, glaring at the pale fingers. âI have an obligation. Iâm an alpha to a pack that can read my fucking mind, I literally have no way of withholding this.âÂ
Maddox froze, slight terror sinking into his features. âIf they know ââ
âTheyâll cross the border and come for you. And I wonât be able to stop them.â Jacob finished angrily, nostrils flaring. âYouâre directly linked to one of their imprints, that makes you a bigger threat than the rest.â
âIâm not killing anybody!â
âAinsley isnât just anybody.â
âIâm well aware.â Maddox spat in return, his face quickly shifting. âI wouldnât hurt her.âÂ
âWonât stop Embry from trying to sink his teeth into you.âÂ
âRight â the whole soulmate thing ââ
âDo not,â he growled, letting out his breath in a big huff. âImprinting is more than some soulmate. Especially to Embry, alright? This is his person. She is everything to him â if not being able to kill you doesnât kill him, knowing she lied to protect you will.âÂ
Maddox stopped, his vision pulling into the middle before images flashed through his mind. Renesmeeâs warm hand touched his chest, forcing visuals into his mind. The sensation ran over his body, the chilling vibration that was accompanied by the pounding in his skull.Â
Ainsleyâs bright, cheery smile took up the majority of the images, along with a man. He was tall and tanned, and appeared to look very much like Jacob. His hair was short and nearly buzzed, his frame was thinner than Jacobâs, and certainly just as tall. Together, Ainsley and Embry looked like a match-made in heaven; she fit perfectly under his chin, fit perfectly in his arms. Her arms draped over his shoulders and around his neck, the intensity of what appeared to be an innocent display of affection made Maddox feel as though he were intruding on a personal moment.Â
Renesmee was showing him exactly what it meant to be an imprint â showing him exactly what kind of bond was at stake. What Ainsley was at risk of losing.Â
In the next set of images, she showed Embryâs frame convulsing, his bones shifting in slo-mo, his body exploding out of pure rage into something nearly ten times his original size.Â
It showed Ainsley hunched over another's arm, emptying the contents of her stomach onto the floor.Â
Maddox had to pull away, taking a few steps out of reach. He struggled for breath he didnât really need, thinking about the importance this relationship might have actually been to her â and how he had forced her into a corner to help him, just so he could possibly stick around, just so he could see her again.Â
âPlease,â he said finally, looking at Jacob with desperation, âplease donât say anything.â

I sat on one of the couches in the basement, eyes glued to the television as Travis and Trenton argued back and forth on pizza toppings for their dinner, prolonging our dart game far longer than necessary. TJ had been called up to Seattle for investigations, while Jennie worked double shifts to cover the incoming traumaâs. The collapse of all the dominos linking all pieces of our family had both Trent and I on edge â hence the current ongoing battle between my brothers.Â
âOh my god,â I cried, rolling my neck. âJust pick something already, Iâm starving!âÂ
âJust let Ains pick something!â Travis growled, ripping the pamphlet out of Trentâs hands.Â
âUh, no,â he laughed once, taking the menu back, âshe likes shit like chicken on her pizza â I donât fucking think so.âÂ
âWhatâs wrong with chicken?â
âIt doesnât belong on pizza â thatâs whatâs wrong with chicken!â
I rubbed my temples, blowing out my breath slowly. Each passing day I spent confined in my parents house made me more irritated and miserable. The boys had not stopped fighting, Embry became more preoccupied as the pack circled in on the final safehouse Alice and Edward had provided. In an effort to ease his mind, Leah had asked that Trent keep an eye on me.Â
Of course I had objected, but that didnât seem to matter much, seeing as I was (essentially) moved home.Â
Once food had been ordered, and I stuffed my face with my share, I retired to my bedroom. I flipped the lock on my knob, sighing as I leaned my back against the door. I had half-expected Embry to be settled into my bed, instead the room sat empty and cold.Â
I wandered to where my phone had been plugged in, scrolling through the notifications. Two messages from Embry.Â
Wonât see you 2night. Jake needs me to cover his shift.Â
Sleep tight xoxo
I smiled to myself, pulling the phone to my chest as I collapsed onto the bed. Iyah looked up from the floor, tilting his head to the side in question. âFor one night.â I nodded, laughing when the puppy happily joined me on the mattress, circling into his place in the corner. âJust donât tell Embry, kay?â Â
The dog huffed in response, enticing another giggle from me. I scratched behind his ear, pressing a kiss to his muzzle before I rolled onto my back.Â
I wondered what Jacob was up to â being as responsible as he was, it wasnât like him to pass along his duties to anyone else. Especially not Embry. That was moreso what Seth was for, being in his prime. I ripped my hair tie from my head, stretching my legs out as the moon casted the shadows of the treetops into my room.
From somewhere in the distance, I could hear a wolf howl.

Carlisle and I headed back to the main house early in the morning, just in time to feed Care bear and Samuel. Niklaus was still asleep- he'd probably stayed up late reading as daddy and I hadn't been here to put him to bed.
Renesmee on the other hand, was sitting in the middle of the floor, Rose and Emmet standing over her while she played with twisted silverware.
Alice, Jasper, Esme, Marcel, Carlisle, and I settled down on the couch. "Where's Bree?" I questioned with a raised eyebrow.
"She left early." Jasper said. "I think she's meeting Embry for a breakfast date."
I grinned.
"Jacob and Seth left early this morning as well." Rose informed me.
"Okay." I murmured, snuggling into Carlisle's side, Caroline drinking from her own bottle like a good girl. Samuel on the other hand was very insistent that I feed him. Mommy's boy.
"How late was Niklaus up?" Carlisle questioned Esme.
"Around midnight." Marcel answered. "He was engrossed in his book. We couldn't get him to go to bed any earlier than that."
Carlisle chuckled.
Renesmee hadn't been up long when Edward and Bella came in through the door. Renesmee chucked the spoon that she'd been holding in her right hand at the floor, creating a dent. Everyone but myself laughed. I merely smiled, put paid more attention to my own daughter who was playing with my long hair.
Bella was across the room in a thirty-second of a second to hold her and Bella was soon asking, "How long as she been up?" I could hear Edward in the kitchen putting together Renesmee's cup. She still had to be hand-fed.
"Just a few minutes. We would have called you soon. She's been asking for you- demanding might be a better description. Esme sacrificed her second-best silver service to keep the little monster entertained. We didn't want to. . . er, bother you."
I tried to hide my grin at her implications. Emmett's laughter was silent, sending vibrations throughout the entire house- which was impressive considering it's three almost four story height and quite long as well.
"We'll get your room set up right away." Bella said, obviously not speaking to Rose at the moment. "You'll like the cottage. It's magic. Thank you, Esme. So much. It's absolutely perfect."
Emmett laughed again- not silent. "So it's still standing? I would've thought you two had knocked it to rubble by now. What were you doing last night? Discussing the national debt?"
I chuckled with amusement. Have I ever mentioned that Emmett was my favorite son?
I could hear Bella's teeth gritting but she didn't answer, deflecting instead, "Where're the wolves today?"
"Jacob took off this morning pretty early. Seth followed him out." Rosalie said, frowning slightly.
"What was he so upset about?" Edward questioned, coming back into the room. Renesmee was handed off to Rose to be fed.
"I don't know- or care. He was watching Nessie sleep, his mouth hanging open like the moron he is, and then he just jumped to his feet without any kind of trigger- that I noticed anyway- and stormed out. I was glad to be rid of him. The more time he spends here, the less chance there is that we'll ever get the smell out."
"Rose." Esme chided gently.
"Rose!" I chastised slightly angrily.
"I suppose it doesn't matter. We won't be here that much longer." Rose said.
I shifted uncomfortably on the couch. Leaving Forks. Leaving probably the one town who had no idea what I had done. I would hate to go back out into 'the real world.'
"It'll be fine Davina." Marcel whispered quietly, sensing my discomfort. Carlisle placed a hand on the small of my back.
"I still say we should go straight to New Hampshire and get things set up. Bella's already registered at Dartmouth. Doesn't look like it will take her all that long to be able to handle school. I'm sure you'll ace your classes. . . apparently there's nothing interesting for you to do at night besides study."
Rosalie and I giggled.
Edward growled at that second and we all looked up at him.
Alice was on her feet in an instant and so were Carlisle and I, expecting danger.
"What is he doing? What is that dog doing that has erased my schedule for the entire day? I can't see anything! No!" I sank back down on the couch. So Jacob had done something. Fantastic. "Look at you! You need me to show you how to use your closet more than mom!"
I glanced down at the Harry Potter T-shirt and blue jeans I was wearing. I certainly didn't see anything wrong with it. Should I have gone with Marvel instead?
"Ali, don't call Jacob a dog." I said in a deadpanned voice, brushing Caroline's curls back.
"He talked to Charlie." Edward said and my head snapped up. "He thinks Charlie is following after him. Coming here. Today."
"He did what!" I practically shouted, back on my feet.
"He told Charlie? But- doesn't he understand? How could he do that? No!" Bella said, sounding distressed.
"Jacob's on his way in now." Edward said through his teeth.
I immediately turned to Caroline and Samuel, "You two listen to me and take this seriously. Act your age. Don't talk, you don't understand anything that goes on in the conversation when Charlie gets here. Do you understand? You can't walk yet. You can't read. Nothing. You can't know how advanced you are."
Carlisle meanwhile had zoomed upstairs and I could hear him telling Niklaus that he needed to wake up and eat before coming back downstairs.
Meanwhile Esme was calling Bree and telling her that Charlie was coming and she should either stay out with Embry or come home now. Either way, she couldn't leave or come back until Charlie was gone.
Jacob came through the door and for once, I could smell a slight wet dog smell- probably because it had been raining. He shook his head, water droplets going everywhere. "Hey, guys."
Leah and Seth were with him too, wearing clothes, in human form. Their hands were trembling, probably feeling the tension in the room. Carlisle had come back, Niklaus in his arms. Caroline and Samuel were each sitting on one of my thighs but I set them aside now to stand slowly.
"Rose." Bella said, holding out her arms.
"Charlie'll be here soon. Just a heads-up. I assume Alice is getting you sunglasses or something?" Jacob asked cheerfully.
"Jacob." I said slowly. "What part of you said that getting Charlie involved one day after Bella became a vampire was a good idea?"
"Blondie and Emmett woke me up this morning going on and on about you all moving cross-country. Like I could let you leave. Charlie was the biggest issue there, right? Well, problem solved."
I gritted my teeth. "So you did this for yourself?! Jacob! Whether or not Charlie knew about Bella or not wasn't the issue. We were going to have to leave eventually! This was selfish Jacob! How do you even know that Bella can control herself? You're putting Charlie in danger in so many ways!"
"I didn't put him in danger." Jacob said with a snort. "Except from Bella. But you've got some kind of supernatural self-control, right? Not as good as mind reading, if you ask me. Much less exciting."
Edward moved across the room at that moment, taking over for me, making Jacob lean back as Edward attempted to get into the tall wolves' face. "That's just a theory, mongrel. You think we should test it out on Charlie? Did you consider the physical pain you're putting Bella through, even if she can resist? Or the emotional pain if she doesn't? I suppose what happens to Bella no longer concerns you!"
"Bella will be in pain?" Jacob said, his mouth shifting from a stupid grin to a frown.
"Like you've shoved a white-hot branding iron down her throat!"
I didn't really think the smell of human blood should be painful. Why couldn't it be the sweetest thing you've ever smelt in the world? That made much more sense in my opinion.
"I didn't know that." Jacob whispered.
"Then perhaps you should have asked first." Edward growled.
"You would have stopped me."
"You should have been stopped-"
"This isn't about me. This is about Charlie, Jacob. How could you put him in danger this way? Do you realize it's death or vampire life for him now, too?" Bella asked.
"Relax, Bella. I didn't tell him anything you weren't planning to tell him."
"But he's coming here!"
"Yeah, that's the idea. Wasn't the whole 'let him make the wrong assumptions' thing your plan? I think I provided a very nice red herring, if I do say so myself."
I groaned, "Oh, Jacob! You didn't."
"Say it straight, Jacob. I don't have the patience for this."
"I didn't tell him anything about you, Bella. Not really. I told him about me. Well, show is probably a better verb."
"He phased in front of Charlie." Edward confirmed my suspicions.
I leaned my head on Carlisle's tense shoulder. His arm went around me, rubbing comforting circles on my hip with his fingers.
"You what?" Bella hissed.
"He's brave. Brave as you are. Didn't pass out or throw up or anything. I gotta say, I was impressed. You should've seen his face when I started taking my clothes off, though. Priceless." Jacob chuckled and I let out my own tiny smile at the thought.
"You absolute moron! You could have given him a heart attack!" Bella hissed.
I flinched, thinking about Harry and shot a look at Leah who was glaring at Bella with hatred.
"Charlie's fine. He's tough. If you'd give this just a minute, you'll see that I did you a favor here." Jacob said.
"You have half of that, Jacob. You have thirty seconds to tell me every single word before I give Renesmee to Rosalie and rip your miserable head off. Seth won't be able to stop me this time."
I was up on my feet again, darting towards the werewolves as a defense mechanism. This caused both Marcel and Carlisle to rise to their feet too. Jasper and Emmett closed in on Bella as I glared at her.
"Jeez, Bells," Jacob said, ignoring the rest of us. "You didn't used to be so melodramatic. Is that a vampire thing?"
"Twenty-six seconds." Bella said.
I went tenser.
Jacob flopped into the nearest chair. I kept my position even as Seth and Leah moved to stand on his flanks. Leah bared her teeth at Bella.
"So I knocked on Charlie's door this morning and asked him to come for a walk with me. He was confused, but when I told him it was about you and that you were back in town, he followed me out to the woods. I told him you weren't sick anymore, and that things were a little weird, but good. He was about to take off to see you, but I told him I had to show him something first. And then I phased." Jacob said with a shrug.
"I want every word, you monster."
"Bella." I hissed.
Good lord was my life going to consist of chastising my kids?
"Well, you said I only had thirty seconds- okay, okay. Lemme see. . . I phased back and got dressed, and then after he started breathing again, I said something like, 'Charlie, you don't live in the world you thought you lived in. The good news is, nothing has changed- except that now you know. Life'll go on the same way it always has. You can go right back to pretending that you don't believe any of this.' It took him a minute to get his head together, and then he wanted to know what was really going on with you, with the whole rare-disease thing. I told him that you had been sick, but you were fine now- it was just that you'd had to change a little bit in the process of getting better. He wanted to know what I mean by 'change,' and I told him that you looked a lot more like Esme now than you looked like Renee."
Edward hissed.
"After a few minutes, he asked, real quietly, if you turned into an animal, too. And I said, 'She wishes she was that cool!'" Jacob said with a laugh while Rose made a noise of disgust.
"I started to tell him more about werewolves, but I didn't even get the whole word out- Charlie cut me off and she he'd 'rather no know the specifics.' Then he asked if you'd known what you were getting yourself into when you married Edward, and I said, 'Sure, she's known all about this for years, since she first came to Forks.' He didn't like that very much. I let him rant till he got it out of his system. After he got calmed down, he just wanted two things. He wanted to see you, and I said it would be better if he gave me a head start to explain."
Bella inhaled and said, "What was the other thing he wanted?"
"You'll like this," Jacob said with a smile, "His main request is that he be told as little as possible about all of this. If it's not absolutely essential for him to know something, then keep it to yourself. Need to know, only."
"I can handle that part." Bella said.
I still wasn't relaxed, my eyes on Edward and Bella only throughout the conversation, waiting for one of them to leap for Jacob's throat. Sure, I loved my vampire family. But if someone was going to threaten someone else on one of the other sides of the family, I'd defend the other side. If Jacob was threatening Be- Alice, I would be standing in front of Alice right now.
"Other than that, he'd just like to pretend things are normal." Jacob smiled.
"What did you tell him about Renesmee and the others?" Bella asked.
The others? My kids had names too!
"Oh yeah. So I told him that you and Edward had inherited a new little mouth to feed. She's your orphaned ward- like Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson. I didn't think you'd mind me lying. That's all part of the game, right? Charlie was way past being shocked at this point, but he did ask if you were adopting her. 'Like a daughter? Like I'm sort of a grandfather?' were his exact words. I told him yes. 'Congrats, Gramps,' and all of that. He even smiled a little. I didn't really say anything about Caroline, Samuel, or Niklaus. I figured if Mom and Doc want to make up their own story they could."
"But she's changing so fast." Bella whispered.
"I told him that she was more special than all of us put together. I told him, 'Trust me, you don't want to know about this. But if you can ignore all the strange parts, you're going to be amazed. She's the most wonderful person in the whole world.' And then I told him that if he could deal with that, you all would stick around for a while and he would have a chance to get to know her. But that if it was too much for him, you would leave. He said as long as no one forced too much information on him, he'd deal."
"I'm not going to say thank you. You're still putting Charlie at a huge risk." Bella said.
Bree and Embry came into the house at that moment. Bree seemed just slightly annoyed, rolling her eyes at me and I winked at her, but didn't move away from the werewolves side. Marcel and Carlisle had settled back down on the couch though Carlisle seemed rather anxious from the way his leg bounced Caroline up and down jitterily.
"I am sorry about it hurting you. I didn't know it was like that. Bella, things are different with us now, but you'll always be my best friend, and I'll always love you. But I'll love you the right way now. There's finally a balance. We both have people we can't live without. Still friends?"
He held his hand out and I raised an eyebrow. Bella shifted Renesmee's weight and put her left hand in his. "If I don't kill Charlie tonight, I'll consider forgiving you for this."
"When you don't kill Charlie tonight, you'll owe me huge."
Bella rolled her eyes. Jacob held out both hands now asking, "Can I?"
"I'm actually holding her so that my hands aren't free to kill you, Jacob. Maybe later." Bella sighed.
"How was the date?" I questioned Embry and Bree.
Embry blushed darker and Bree tilted her head away. "It was good." They said together.
I smirked. "Good. Bree, you'll let me know if my brother is giving you a hard time?"
Bree giggled lightly while Embry wrapped an arm around her thin waist. "Hey! I'm a good boyfriend!"
I grinned, "I know. Just teasing Em."
Alice was down in seconds, snapping at Jacob, Seth, Leah, and Embry, "You, you, you, and you. If you must stay, get over in the corner and commit to being there for a while. I need to see. Bella, you'd better give him the baby, too. You'll need your arms free, anyway."
"Take her." Bella said, almost shoving Renesmee into Jacob's arms. He nodded, taking her, before gesturing to the other wolves. Seth, Jacob, and Embry slouched to the floor- Bree sitting on Embry's lap- while Leah pursed her lips, shaking her head.
"Am I allowed to leave?"
"Of course." Jacob and I said at the same time. I moved to the side so that she could move past me. She gave me a small smile as she passed.
"Stay east so you don't cross Charlie's path." Alice added but Leah didn't acknowledge her, moving into the bushes to phase.
I moved back to Carlisle's side, settling back onto the couch, taking Caroline into my arms. Carlisle looked deep in thought, one arm around Samuel's waist- who looked like he wanted to follow Leah- the other hand tapping on the cover of a hardcover book. A scientific one.
"I'll be back." I murmured, getting up from the couch to go to the kitchen. Caroline eagerly reached for one of the chocolate muffins that were on the counter, still wrapped in their packages. They were for the werewolves and myself.
"Hey Embry! Seth! Do you want muffins?" I called lightly.
"Yes." Not only Embry and Seth, but also Jacob answered.
I grabbed blueberry for Embry and Jacob, cranberry for Seth. I grabbed two chocolate muffins for me. Also a can for rootbeer which was there solely for me.
I brought it back to the living room, tossing the muffins at them. I opened the chocolate muffin, sighing, and giving Caroline a small piece. "You know sugar isn't good for your teeth?" I questioned lightly.
She simply grinned, looking proud of herself for not talking. I smirked, kissing the top of her head while I ate the rest of my muffin.
"What are you thinking about?" I asked Carlisle while the rest of the family gave Bella pointers on how to act human. Emmett had turned the TV on to watch the football game.
"He wants to take you on a honeymoon after this week ends." Edward muttered aloud and then forgot I could hear. "Sorry Carlisle."
Carlisle sighed, pulling me into him, "I was indeed thinking about a getaway. I still have yet to give you your wedding present after all."
I blinked, "You haven't?"
Carlisle chuckled, "Nope. You've never seen it or heard of it."
"I thought the house was a wedding present?" I questioned.
"Nope." Carlisle chuckled quietly.
"Can I have a hint?"
"It's big." Edward and Bella said together.
Carlisle glowered at them.
"Two minutes." Alice sang. "Maybe you should start out already on the couch. You've been sick, after all. That way he won't have to see you move right at first."
I ignored most of it so the conversation, wondering what Carlisle could have possibly gotten me. My own gift had been rather small, and worry was starting to seep through me. It wasn't like I had a lot of money so if I had wanted to get him anything expensive, it would be like he was paying for his own gift anyways.
"Mama, it's fine." Jasper said soothingly.
"It really is." Edward said before turning back to Renesmee. "Exactly, and he's going to make you thirsty. But you mustn't bit him. He won't heal like Jacob."
"Can she understand you?" Bella asked.
"She understands. You'll be careful, won't you, Renesmee? You'll help us?" Edward continued.
Renesmee put a hand to his cheek. "No, I don't care if you bite Jacob. That's fine."
I laughed along with Caroline and I grinned down at her, kissing her forehead again. Niklaus looked bored, his eyes darting to his book on the table and his father.
"Klaus." I murmured softly. "You can't read while Charlie's here."
Niklaus huffed, curling into Carlisle's side. Carlisle put an arm around him.
"Would you rather sit on my lap or Seth's?" I asked Caroline quietly. "You have to stay in one or the other while Charlie is here."
Caroline thought about it for a moment before leaping from my arms towards Seth.
I smiled, tugging Niklaus onto my lap and laying against Carlisle's arm.
"Er, Edward, you might not want to distract her like that right now. She needs to be able to focus." Jaz spoke suddenly.
"Oops." Edward said, pulling away from Bella. Bella laughed and said, "later."
"Focus, Bella." Jaz continued.
"Right."
"Bella."
"Sorry, Jasper."
Emmett and I laughed again.
I listened as a car- Charlie's police cruiser- got closer and closer. I hummed quietly under my breath to Niklaus. His eyes started to close. The car pulled up, idling for a moment or two until he turned it off, the rumbling of the engine cutting off. A door opened softly and slammed loudly. Three large strides across the grass, twelve steps up the stairs and across the porch before he stood in front of the door taking two and a half breaths before knocking on the door.
Carlisle was across the room, still holding Samuel in his arms, his body positioned so his back would be to Charlie.
"Hello, Charlie." Carlisle said, pretending to be abashed. I believe the story was that Bella was in Atlanta or Chicago at one of the CDC centers. I didn't trust the CDC, never had, never would. I knew what kinds of experiments were done there because of my fathers' position in the military. All sorts of chemical disease experiments. Funding bio labs in Ukraine, China, Iraq, and a few other countries that were closed off and secret. It was horrifying.
"Carlisle. Where's Bella?" Charlie said stiffly.
"Right here, Dad." Bella said.
I had pulled out one of the Jack and Annie books, holding the book up to Niklaus face, moving my lips like I was reading the story out loud, but really letting Niklaus read at his own pace. I knew this would be a good compromise that would make him happy.
"Is that you, Bella?" Charlie asked.
"Yep. Hi, Dad."
"Hey, Charlie. How're things?" Jacob asked.
Charlie was walking slowly across the room. Carlisle moved around him slowly to sit back down on the couch with me.
"Bella?"
"It's really me. I'm sorry, Dad."
"Are you okay?"
"Really and truly great. Healthy as a horse."
"Jake told me this was. . . necessary. That you were dying."
"Jacob was telling the truth." Bella said after a moment. I flipped the page.
"That makes one of you." Charlie growled. His voice changed as he glanced down slightly and said, "Oh. This is her. The orphan Jacob said you're adopting."
"My niece," Edward lied. I almost snorted, but decided to calmly turn the page instead.
"I thought you'd lost your family." Charlie questioned.
"I lost my parents. My older brother was adopted, like me. I never saw him after that. But the courts located me when he and his wife died in a car accident, leaving their only child without any other family."
Wow, the story was almost so real that I started crying. Some books could do that to me- make me cry like the characters were actually real. Even some of the fanfictions- especially Marvel ones with endgame- could make me cry.
"She's. . . she's, well, she's a beauty."
"Yes." Edward said.
"Kind of a big responsibility, though. You two are just getting started." Charlie questioned.
"What else could we do? Would you have refused her?"
"Hmph. Well. Jake says you call her Nessie?"
"No, we don't." Bella said, annoyed. "Her name is Renesmee."
"How do you feel about this? Maybe Carlisle and Davina or Marcel and Esme-"
"She's mine. I want her." Bella said.
"You gonna make me a grandpa so young?"
I giggled.
"Carlisle is a grandfather, too." Edward pointed out.
Charlie glanced towards where Carlisle and I were sitting. I glanced up at my husbands face, noting how he looked like a God.
Charlie snorted, "I guess that does sort of make me feel better." His eyes landed on Niklaus in my lap, Samuel in Carlisle's, and Caroline in Seth's.
"This is Niklaus." I whispered quietly. "That's Samuel and the little girl is Caroline. Mine and Carlisle's triplets."
Charlie was taking them in, comparing them to Carlisle and my features. Probably the eyes mostly as ours were now gold. Then his eyes slowly landed on Renesmee again. Carlisle's arm wrapped around my waist, squeezing me tightly to his side.
Renesmee looked him straight on and he gasped and then started to hyperventilate. I tensed and Carlisle rubbed the spot between my hip and rib soothingly.
Jacob got up, moving to Charlie's side, and whispered in his ear, "Need to know, Charlie. It's okay. I promise."
Charlie swallowed, nodded, and then he stepped closer to Edward, hands becoming fists. "I don't want to know everything, but I'm done with the lies!"
"I'm sorry." Edward said as Niklaus turned the page in the book on his own. I winced, but Charlie hadn't seen it. "but you need to know the public story more than you need to know the truth. If you're going to be part of this secret, the public story is the one that counts. It's to protect Bella and Renesmee as well as the rest of us. Can you go along with the lies for them?"
We had all frozen except the werewolves and the kids. Bella crossed her ankles.
"You might've given me some warning, kid." Charlie said, looking from Bella and then glancing at me.
"Would it really have made this any easier?" Bella questioned.
Renesmee reached out to Charlie and then Bella stopped her.
"Whoa. How old is she?" Charlie asked.
"Um. . ."
"Three months. Rather, she's the size of a three-month-old, more or less. She's younger in some ways, more mature in others." Edward said. Renesmee accentuated his words by waving. I rolled my eyes.
"Told you she was special, didn't I?" Jacob asked, nudging Charlie in the ribs who cringed away.
"Oh, c'mon, Charlie. I'm the same person I've always been. Just pretend this afternoon didn't happen."
I picked up my rootbeer for lack of anything better to do and drank most of it. I was stressed.
"Just what is your part in all this, Jake? How much does Billy know? Why are you here?" Charlie questioned Jacob.
"Billy's known about everything since he was pretty much born." I muttered for Charlie's benefit. "He knows all of it."
"Well, I could tell you all about it," Jacob said teasingly, "Billy knows absolutely everything- but it involves a lot of stuff about werewo-"
"Ungh!" Charlie protested. "Never mind."
Maybe this really could work out.
I stood up, grabbing my can, and walked out of the living room to the kitchen, throwing the can away and sighing.
"Woo!" Emmett practically shouted from the living room. "Go Gators!"
I laughed quietly.
"Florida winning?" Charlie asked after a delicate second and I came back out with another soda and this time some cold pizza for the wolf boys and myself. Baby food for the kids in their bottles.
"Just scored the first touchdown. Bout time somebody scored around here." Emmett said while waggling his eyebrows.
I choked on my mouthful of soda while Jasper grinned and Carlisle sighed, rolling his eyes. Esme pursed her lips while Rose full out grinned. Alice rolled her eyes while Marcel chuckled under his breath.
Charlie didn't notice, sucking in a deep breath, lurching to his feet, stepping around Jacob so that he could sink into an open chair. "Well. I guess we should see if they can hold on to the lead."
------------------
Charlie was just leaving. I had put the kids to be in the cribs upstairs in their own room. Sometime near the end, Embry and Bree had taken off to Bree's room upstairs. Marcel and Esme had slowly drifted away as well followed by Alice and Rose. Leaving mostly the men to be in the room watching two football games.
I came back down the stairs, smiling at Charlie who was talking to Bella on the front porch. I settled back down on the couch, putting my head on Carlisle's legs. He was bent over a fat book and then only thing that he did to acknowledge my presence was put a calming hand on the top of my head.
I didn't mind. I leaned into his touch just slightly and closed my eyes, listening to the conversation outside.
"Can I come back tomorrow?"
"Sure, Dad. Of course. We'll be here."
"You'd better be. See you tomorrow, Nessie."
"Not you, too!"
"Huh?"
"Her name is Renesmee. Like Renee and Esme, put together. No variations. Do you want to hear her middle name?"
"Sure."
"Carlie. With a C. Like Carlisle and Charlie put together."
I smiled a little and felt Carlisle's touch soften on my head.
"Thanks, Bells."
"Thank you, Dad. So much has changed so quickly. My head hasn't stopped spinning. . ."
I closed my eyes, purring slightly as Carlisle moved his hand over my hair again. I heard him laugh softly under his breath. I curled more into him.
"Snuggle bunny." He murmured under his breath.
I cracked my yellow eyes open to stare up at him. He smiled softly, placing a bookmark into the book to save his spot before setting it aside. He pulled me up onto his lap, my body angled so I could rest my head on one of his shoulders, my legs on the couch.
Then Emmett's rather loud voice interrupted our quiet moment, "I'm not even sure she's really a vampire, let alone a newborn. She's too tame."
Bella snarled under her breath. Emmett laughed, "Oooo, scary."
"Emm bear." I warned.
"Charlie will be back tomorrow." Bella said.
"Excellent." Emmett said. I rolled my eyes as him and Rose laughed.
"Not brilliant, Emmett." Edward said.
"What do you mean?" Emmett demanded.
"It's a little dense, don't you think, to antagonize the strongest vampire in the house?"
I thought Emmett would die laughing, "Please."
"They are such children." I whined to Carlisle, my arms around his neck.
He chuckled, kissing my neck softly. "Yes, a shame we're two of four adults in a house full of children."
"I'm not a child." Niklaus muttered, rubbing his eyes. He had wandered down the stairs himself, hopping up onto the couch to grab a book.
I giggled, kissing Carlisle's neck.
"Mama!" Jasper complained.
I rolled my eyes. "Jazzy!"
"Come on." Alice said, tugging Jasper's hand. "Let's see who wins."
I slid off Carlisle's lap, following the others out to see the arm wrestling match between Emmett and Bella.
Emmett had found a rather large rock, carrying it in his hands.
"Don't hurt yourself, Emmett." Edward said as he slammed the rock down in front of Bella. Carlisle and I exchanged a look. Marcel had his arm wrapped around Esme, smiling. I wondered if it was things like this that reminded him of military training.
"Alright on three," Jasper said, his accent even more pronounced for some reason, "One, two, three."
Emmett and Bella's arm wrestling match lasted about fifteen seconds before Bella slammed Emmett's hand through the rock. She turned to Edward, victorious, "Did you see that?"
I smirked. "Wow Emm bear. Not such a bear anymore, are you? Gonna have to call you Emm the Rabbit."
"Squirrel." Edward threw in.
"Alright Mama bear! You want to try?" Emmett asked, his eyes glinting.
Carlisle's arms were immediately around my waist, hugging me to him.
I chuckled softly, kissing his cheek, "Sure. I probably won't beat you, but at least you'll gain some ego back, right?"
"I don't know." Jasper said. "You're a newborn too Mama."
I rested my elbow on the rock, actually kind've nervous, though excited, at the same time. It would be pretty cool to beat Emmett. But I probably wasn't going to. I wasn't full vampire.
I prepared myself, bent over slightly, cocking one leg out on purpose so that Carlisle had a nice view of my ass. I could almost hear him grit his teeth behind me while Marcel chuckled. I raised an eyebrow at Emmett. "Ready squirrel?"
Emmett's eyes narrowed.
"One," Jasper counted again, humor lacing his accent, "Two, three."
There was force, but my hand didn't move an inch. I stared into his eyes instead of my hand. I wasn't really pushing against him. More like holding my place. His brows knit in frustration. I sighed, "Wow. Maybe you were bullshitting your prowess."
And then I slammed his hand down through the rock as well.
