Several weeks went by like that. Once a week, I would tell Embry that I was heading to work but would detour to the Cullen household instead. Alice and I would often coordinate together to make sure that Jacob and Renesmee weren’t in the area before I showed up. Keeping them in the dark for now still seemed like it was our best option – Jacob wouldn’t be able to withhold it from Embry even if he wanted to. In between working at the diner and helping Maddox push the boundaries of his control, I spent every ounce of my free time with Embry and the boys.
So many parts of me felt guilty for lying to him – especially when he had been putting forward more effort to fit into my life.
The pair of us visited home once every other week to have breakfast or dinner with my family. Embry and the pack spent more time trying including my brothers, which helped integrate them into the pack in their own unique way. It was nice to have Travis part of the mix now, but I still worried that he might get hurt. Understandably so, Sam still had reservations when it came to some of the younger members, but as long as we kept it within the main ranks, he seemed satisfied. With the tension growing thicker between the pack and the obvious need to find the nomads, everyone’s control had not been the greatest. Jacob and Embry had gotten into it a few times, even Seth and Quil were more on edge.
I asked a few times about his mother – she had remarried and moved off the reservation to Tacoma. Had a second child now that Embry was independent and a man of his own. For the most part, Embry didn’t speak much about her. Part of me found it incredibly sad; Quil had explained that Tiffany had been incredibly upset and scared during their teen years when the pack first began phasing. Unlike Billy and Sue, Tiffany had no idea about the tribe’s legends, or that there was any possibility they may hold any semblance of truth. Embry was never able to tell Tiffany the truth about what was going on, and the distance put a heavy strain on their relationship.
“When’s the last time he went to see her?”
Quil shrugged, “Not really sure. Christmas a couple years ago, maybe?”
Vague, but that was Quil. Sure, it wasn’t my place to meddle, but Embry had given me such a hard time about maintaining a relationship with my own mother that I thought it was a little hypocritical that he hardly maintained one with his own.
Christmas came and went; Embry opted to ‘gift’ me quite a few things, including an actual coffee machine for his kitchen, as well as a pretty white gold chain with a sterling crescent moon cut out. We spent most of our time together on his new couch (which he purchased a few days after he attempted to sleep on the loveseat following my initial run in with Maddox) wrapped in each other's arms with the fireplace going.
Each week, Maddox would return to the Cullen’s with more accurate locations on the safehouses for any vampire Garrett turned, making a total of five by the time the new year had come. Edward would inform Jacob regarding their locations, trying to make it seem as though Alice had seen it in a vision while following the female nomad – Jacob would bring the news home to the others; they then tore through each house one by one tear and destroyed whatever nomad kept residence.
I tried not to think about it too much. If I got too caught up in the semantics, things always got bad.
There were only three nomads that remained, apart from Maddox. The closer the pack got to taking out the threat, the more uneasy things began to feel at home. Emily was nearing six months into her second pregnancy – bloated and hormonal as ever, causing quite a bit of strain on the pack's eating habits as she was more tired and more hungry. She cared less about feeding everyone else, moreso intent on getting food into her own belly. With no definitive place to gather at, the pack had dispersed their separate ways and only saw each other twice a week as opposed to every day.
Jared and Kim’s wedding was right around the corner, so the pair had been hellbent on having Embry and I help them with the finishing touches. Kim and I spent many late nights and early mornings camping out in Embry and Jacob’s living room, making sure we had a final head count on those invited to the wedding.
When it was mentioned that I was still waiting on the Cullen’s to RSVP, I made sure Kim knew I would have Jacob ask to confirm. We were two weeks into January now – Jacob’s birthday had finally come around. Being the first of his friends to turn twenty-five was a big deal for him, and so the group had collectively pulled together what they were sure was the ultimate birthday experience. After what appeared to be a heart-felt dinner celebration, the boys prompted Jacob into a blindfold and carried him out to Paul’s truck
“We’re taking him to a strip club.” Jared said casually, pulling out a wad of bills larger than I had ever laid eyes on.
“A strip club.” I repeated, watching Paul nod excitedly.
“We did this for my birthday last year – lots of lap dances, lots of booze –”
“I see.” I shared a knowing look with Kim, the pair returning to their post-food comatose on Embry’s couch. Kim had agreed to stay the night with me, knowing the boys would not be home until the early hours of the morning and much to everyone’s dismay, Maddox was still unaccounted for.
The idea that a vampire that had previous connections with his imprint was still out made Embry a little uneasy – the longer the pack went without catching his scent, the more erratic he became. I was being babysat as per Embry’s instruction – the only person that knew of Maddox’s whereabouts apart from myself was Trenton.
Speaking of.
“Are you bringing my brothers?” I asked, shrugging my arms into the sleeves of Embry’s heather gray hoodie.
“Hell yeah,” Jared laughed. “Travis was the one who really pushed for it.”
“That’s because Travis is lonely and miserable while the rest of us have hot as fuck girlfriends.” Embry cooed as he joined us in the living room, leaning over the back of the couch to press his mouth against mine. He enticed a quiet hum from my chest when he sucked on my lower lip.
“Be nice.” I mumbled against his lips, smiling nonetheless.
When the men left for the evening, Kim and I sat curled up on our respective sides of the couch, scrolling through our phones. Undoubtedly, Jared messaged Kim just as quickly as Embry messaged me. We spent what appeared to be well over an hour in silence before I lazily pulled the remote from the coffee table and flipped on the television.
“I can’t believe I’m going to be a wife.” Kim said into the quiet room suddenly.
I blinked slowly, shifting my eyes to look over at her. She sat upright, eyes wide with a sort of fear. I was sure this was where I was supposed to say something soothing and reassuring but honestly, I couldn’t believe it either.
Kim and Jared were the least serious couple of the group – which made them the best sort of couple to me. Watching them crack jokes and pull pranks on each other was my favourite pastime – but I knew how marriages worked. They pulled some people apart. And I wanted to believe that wouldn’t happen to them, but I knew there was a chance. Nothing was impossible.
“I can’t believe you’re marrying Jared.” I retorted, turning my attention back to the television. “He’s an adult, male version of Claire –”
“Exactly!” Kim huffed, shaking her head. “Ains, what am I gonna do? I can’t be a wife, I barely know how to cook.”
“Doesn’t Jared?”
“Yeah.”
“Then you don’t have to cook.” I said simply.
Kim deadpanned, mouth slightly ajar as I pulled the wrapper off another holiday mint and popped it into my mouth. “How can you say that?”
I shrugged, shoving my hands into the pocket in the front of the hoodie. “Embry does all the cooking.”
“You don’t help?”
I rolled my eyes, flipping onto my back. “Of course I will help. I just don’t do the cooking – I clean, I do laundry, I wash dishes. I help Emb and Jake make sure the property tax is paid on time and that bills are kept up with – that sort of thing. You’re already doing most of that on your own, anyway.”
Kim let it all process, chewing on her lower lip. “I don’t want to live with a boy. He’s so messy!”
I could only laugh. “It’s less scary than you think, though I’m not the one with a ring on her finger.”
“Easy for you to say – Embry makes more money than Jared does. You’re both sitting on a nice, fluffy cushion of savings, and have the luxury of personal space. Jared’s losing his shit and can barely afford the place he has now.”
“What’s wrong with Jared’s place?”
Kim rubbed her face with her tired hands. “He lives in a very small, very tight one bedroom apartment. We’re both going to be stuck in a very cramped area for a solid year before we can even think about moving out.”
“It won’t be so bad –”
“Embry and Jacob have this entire two story house, Ains. That’s not exactly something people making ends meet have the luxury of owning. You’re already doing better than most people in their thirties.”
I tried to process that information. It hadn’t fully dawned on me that Embry and I were better off than most of their brothers – and hadn’t realized that Kim and Jared were digging themselves a hole. They were one foot in the door to being in debt, and I was stressing out about not having any spending money after paying off next year's tuition.
“Then why get married right now?”
Kim sighed loudly, shaking her head again, this time with a smile that screamed ‘isn’t it obvious?’. “Because I love him.”
“Okay,” I lamented, sitting up, “and he loves you. And that isn’t going to change – in twenty years from now, you’ll still love him and he’ll still love you.”
“Stop being right,” Kim grumbled, pushing my shoulders so that I fell back into the couch, “can you make a stupid decision so the rest of us don’t feel so brain dead?”
I forced a smile. “I’m already making plenty of bad decisions, Kim.” Just none that you can know about.

Jacob nestled into his corner of the couch, watching as Rosalie ran her fingers through Renesmee’s hair; the trio had been cooped up in the Cullen household all morning. Fork’s was covered under a near constant stream of storm clouds that had yet to let up long enough for him to return home on terms that Nessie deemed ‘safe’. He chalked it up to her wanting some more time with him – which he was always willing to give. In the last seven years, she had grown into quite the remarkable individual. While being incredibly strange to the others in her life, she had a charm that Jacob was certain would bring her sunshine even on the dreariest of days.
Bella and Jacob spent many conversations discussing what they considered appropriate in regards to his relationship with Renesmee. Jacob agreed that it seemed beyond normal to expect anything other than a friendship from her daughter. Regardless of what the Elders might have believed, Jake couldn’t see past the babyface. There was a small part of him that didn’t sit well at the thought of trying to pursue a romantic relationship with her; he genuinely feared there might be a day when Renesemee asked for more, and he wouldn’t be able to refuse. That his genes wouldn’t allow him — they had taken so much autonomy from his as it was.
Instead, Jacob made a vow to be the shoulder to cry on when boys attempted to break her big heart. He would be her best friend and protector – and he would love her unconditionally and always think of her safety and comfortability above all else. He was perfectly content watching over what he considered his family. But that was where it ended – there was nothing romantic about it, or to come of it. He needed to be sure of it, so much so that no one had referred to Renesmee as his ‘imprint’ since her first few months of life.
Small pale fingers touched his knee, pulling his sight into a tunnel before images played in fast-forward: circling glimpses of Ainsley and Emily, along with the unspoken question of their well-being led Jacob to believe that Nessie missed the reservation, and had not felt wanted or welcome since Thanksgiving. The last Nessie had heard from Ainsley was a few weeks ago, just before Christmas. She had gotten a phone call, asking where the Cullen’s resided, mentioning something about wanting to come see her – to apologize.
Ainsley had never shown up.
Jacob had apologized for his cousin's ignorance many times – tried to explain on multiple occasions that Ainsley just hadn’t known about anything. Despite that knowledge, Edward and Bella still believed it would be better if Renesmee remained on their side of the border.
This resulted in Jacob’s absence at home – which he soon realized was putting strain on the rest of the pack. Everyone withdrew into their own personal lives again, just when things were finally beginning to look normal. It was so nice, having everyone together all the time. He remembered a time when he hated spending every waking second with a group of rowdy, immature boys but he longed for those days all the time now. The only reason why they had fallen back into old habits was because of Ainsley and Embry – a sort of means to help her feel inclusive. Especially after Embry’s shitshow.
It appeared as though Ainsley was tougher than everyone gave her credit for. She handled Embry’s temper like a champ, dutifully stepping up to the plate when the others fell short. Acted as a mother hen whenever Emily couldn’t be bothered to scold or bake for the group. But even that had become daunting. In between working and trying to keep up with everyone in her life – the pack and her own family, Jacob could see the strain and exhaustion in Ainsley’s eyes.
Things would’ve been different now, he’d tell himself. If he could just bring Nessie back to the reservation, if they’d just let him, he could pull everyone back together again.
He offered his best friend a sad smile, and wrapped an arm around her shoulders in a tight squeeze. “I’m sure you’ll see them soon.” He promised.
“C’mon, Ness,” Rose said quietly, urging her to stand, “let’s get you something to eat.”
“What about me?” Jacob complained, watching Nessie disappear into the kitchen.
Rosalie looked over her shoulder, the corner of her mouth upturned in an exhausted smile. “You can fend for yourself, Jacob. You’re no stranger to our kitchen.”
The wolf scoffed, turning his attention back to the television mounted to the wall. The news was muted, the screen split between the terrors that were turning Seattle upside down for the second time this decade, along with whatever college basketball game was playing in the local area. From his peripheral vision, Jake caught the figure of a stranger trudging up the driveway.
It wasn’t until said visitor started taking the steps at the front door two at a time that Jacob stood and rushed down the stairs. Obscene anger and rage filled his body, a searing heat bubbling at the surface. The part of him that needed to ensure Renesmee’s safety overtook his judgement. The scent filled the room before the door had even had a chance to open – Jacob’s hands pressed flat against their shoulders and shoved them hard, sending the body flying back a few several feet.
The man’s response was automatic: cold hands gripped his throat tightly, the growl rising from somewhere deep within both their chests. The sounds clashed together, so different but with the same underlying warning. Jacob clenched his fist around one of the vampire's wrists, pulling roughly with a loud snarl, twisting the figure away. Just as quickly, Jacob found himself being hoisted up – not by much – before his body came crashing down on the cement of the stairs, the brick crumbling under his weight and the sheer force of the impact. Jacob heaved in air, desperately trying to breath around the vice grip on his throat; it wasn’t until he really looked at the intruder that he stopped struggling.
His face was smooth except for the slight stubble that permanently resided on his lower face. His hair fell in loose waves, framing his squared jaw in that sort of subtly perfect way. Every fiber in Jacob’s body, every vein screamed in protest as his scent overwhelmed him. Over some time, he had grown accustomed to the stench of the Cullen’s, but his was different.
Familiar, but different.
Jacob thought back, trying to pinpoint where he had picked up on the scent before. Jasper was pulling the man – Maddox, as he called himself – away from Jacob’s limp body, his mind swirling when Renesmee placed her hands on his shoulders, worry and anxiety filling his mind.
Jacob shut his eyes tightly, shaking his head quickly as though to clear her thoughts from his head. He had definitely caught this scent before. Not from patrol. Not from a local bar. Not from the diner –
The diner.
Ainsley.
His eyes shot open, frame bolting forward as quickly as he could manage, tremor rolling down his spine as he collided with the nomad’s body and sent him backwards again – this time far enough that he disappeared momentarily into the underbrush of the forest.
“What’s he doing here?” Jacob growled.
Maddox stood slowly, readjusting his jacket, amber eyes locked on Jacob’s heaving frame. “Control your guard dog, would you?” He muttered to Jasper, picking a leaf out of his hair.
“I thought you said you didn’t know where the nomads were.” Jacob accused with heavy disappointment, looking down at Renesmee. She shrugged under the weight of his gaze, seeming just as confused as Jacob.
“He’s not the problem, Jake.” Jasper said quickly, holding out one hand as a means of halting Jacob from moving forward. “He came to Carlisle for help. That’s all we’re trying to do.”
“Yeah, expand the family a little more, it’s not like you’re big enough already.” Jacob spat, pulling his lips back over his teeth. “It’s not like the large quantity hasn’t already put enough strain on us before. What’s a few more kids, huh?”
“Jacob …”
“There are seventeen of us,” he growled, taking a step to the side, “half of them are trying to stop it from happening again, some of them left altogether, and the rest of us are trying to settle down and start our lives.”
“We didn’t turn him –”
“This wasn’t part of the agreement.” Chief Jacob was slowly starting to break out of shell. Very rarely did Jacob like being the alpha – more so settled into the role because Sam had made a definitive decision to leave it behind. It had been two years since Sam had last phased – two years until the night the nomads crossed onto their land. No one was entirely certain how long it would take to break the bond – Sam stopped after expecting his first child, but now would have to start all over again.
Not exactly the stress Emily needed.
“Jacob.” The wolf tensed, halting his feet from moving as Carlisle came down past the ruins of the stairs and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. “Allow us to explain. Please.”
After an hour of arguments and several hand tremors, Jacob was finally seated in the living room, watching Maddox carefully. So, he had sought out help for control. So, he didn’t want to be a vampire. So, he didn’t anticipate all of the downfalls to being an immortal bloodsucking killer – what a shocker. That didn’t excuse that Jacob couldn't trust his loyalty.
“And no one knows?” He asked again, squinting his eyes at Maddox.
The vampire’s facial features remained smooth and even, his head tilting to the side, “None of the dogs know, no.”
“Would you stop calling us that?”
“Would you stop trying to find a loophole so you can kill me?” Maddox asked angrily, leaning forward with his knuckles on his knees.
Jacob growled inwardly, pulling his eyes away from Maddox. Nessie sat on the other side of the couch, her legs folded under her, her arms wrapped around one of the throw pillows. He could see the wheels in her tiny, brilliant mind turning. She was trying to piece it all together, trying to pinpoint exactly what fit and didn’t. What was a lie and what was the truth.
“Speak your mind, kiddo.” Jacob encouraged, folding his arms across his broad chest.
She shook her head, gnawing on her lower lip – a human Bella trait she had picked up in the last few years – and sighed. “It doesn’t add up.” Renesmee was looking at Maddox now, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “How did you find us? We’re not exactly easily accessible.”
His amber eyes darted up from the frayed string of his shirt to meet her eyes. He took a few moments before he responded. “I had an inside friend help.”
Renesmee’s brows pulled together in frustration, letting out a petulant sigh. “We do have a lot of friends …” She mused to herself, still working to fit two and two together.
“Give it up.” Maddox suggested angrily, pushing himself up out of the recliner.
Jacob shot him a look in warning. “We’re just trying to piece it together –”
His voice boomed, overpowering Jacob’s easily. “Trust me when I say that you, of all people, do not want to know.” There was a certainty to his look. The way his eyes hardened in a definitive way. The way that halted the conversation. Jacob knew that look – Jacob had mastered that look.
“What do you mean ‘me of all people?” Apparently Jacob was going to play Paul today – asking useless questions, taking personal offense to the nomads words.
“It’s just in your best interest to not know, that’s all.”
“Oh, bullshit.” Jacob bit back, rising to his own two feet. “If you want an in with this family, you’re going to have to get used to letting me in, bloodsucker.”
“I don’t owe you anything.” Maddox laughed, tucking his hair behind his ears. “Cute that you think so.”
“Jake –”
“Dude, you seriously need to start talking or I’m going to find a loophole –”
“Jake, stop it –”
“-- and I’m going to rip your head off –”
“Jacob, enough –”
“-- and deliver it on a silver platter to my brothers –”
“Jacob!”
“What?” His voice boomed, eyes glowering over to where Renesmee sat, watching the pair anxiously.
She licked her lips, looking over at Carlisle before she looked past Jacob to Maddox. She took a deep breath, and then sighed. “Ainsley brought him here.”
Jacob’s face contorted, his brows pulling together and up, confusion littering his face. “What? No she didn’t.”
“Think about it.”
“I know Ains, okay? She wouldn’t help this scumbag –” Jacob paused.
His thoughts snapped back to the afternoon that started the mad-leech hunt. The night before the babyshower. The night Ainsley had come home reeking of one of the leeches, the night Trent had muttered something about how she had tolerated sitting with a scumbag.
“Maddox.” He whispered quietly, the last of the puzzle pieces falling together. He lifted his eyes to meet the vampire’s, his face crumpling as guilt registered across the other's face. “She brought you here.”
“I asked her to.”
“Why?” Jacob pressed.
Maddox blinked, “Because this isn’t for me. What they’re doing – to innocent people – isn’t me. I came here to learn control, Ainsley helps a lot with that.”
“Wait, wait, wait,” Jacob said, holding a hand up, “she helps?”
“Yes, she does.” Carlisle conceded from the archway, leaning against the wood with his shoulder. “It appears as though the personal human tie he had with Ainsley helps keep him grounded. We’ve made incredible progress in the last few weeks – far more than Jasper was comfortable with in his first few years of this lifestyle.”
Jacob felt his heart sink, the realization hitting him that he was going to be the one to tell Embry.
Tell Embry that his imprint was lying to him.
Tell Embry that his imprint was hiding one of the nomads.
Hiding the nomad Embry wanted dead the most. The one he spent nights envisioning, the one he had torn to shreds in his mind over and over again –
“Why did you tell me this?” He asked angrily at no one in particular. “Do you know what this is going to do? Do you know what’s going to happen now?”
“You can’t say anything –” Maddox started, reaching for Jacob’s arm.
“The fuck I can’t.” He growled, glaring at the pale fingers. “I have an obligation. I’m an alpha to a pack that can read my fucking mind, I literally have no way of withholding this.”
Maddox froze, slight terror sinking into his features. “If they know –”
“They’ll cross the border and come for you. And I won’t be able to stop them.” Jacob finished angrily, nostrils flaring. “You’re directly linked to one of their imprints, that makes you a bigger threat than the rest.”
“I’m not killing anybody!”
“Ainsley isn’t just anybody.”
“I’m well aware.” Maddox spat in return, his face quickly shifting. “I wouldn’t hurt her.”
“Won’t stop Embry from trying to sink his teeth into you.”
“Right – the whole soulmate thing –”
“Do not,” he growled, letting out his breath in a big huff. “Imprinting is more than some soulmate. Especially to Embry, alright? This is his person. She is everything to him – if not being able to kill you doesn’t kill him, knowing she lied to protect you will.”
Maddox stopped, his vision pulling into the middle before images flashed through his mind. Renesmee’s warm hand touched his chest, forcing visuals into his mind. The sensation ran over his body, the chilling vibration that was accompanied by the pounding in his skull.
Ainsley’s bright, cheery smile took up the majority of the images, along with a man. He was tall and tanned, and appeared to look very much like Jacob. His hair was short and nearly buzzed, his frame was thinner than Jacob’s, and certainly just as tall. Together, Ainsley and Embry looked like a match-made in heaven; she fit perfectly under his chin, fit perfectly in his arms. Her arms draped over his shoulders and around his neck, the intensity of what appeared to be an innocent display of affection made Maddox feel as though he were intruding on a personal moment.
Renesmee was showing him exactly what it meant to be an imprint – showing him exactly what kind of bond was at stake. What Ainsley was at risk of losing.
In the next set of images, she showed Embry’s frame convulsing, his bones shifting in slo-mo, his body exploding out of pure rage into something nearly ten times his original size.
It showed Ainsley hunched over another's arm, emptying the contents of her stomach onto the floor.
Maddox had to pull away, taking a few steps out of reach. He struggled for breath he didn’t really need, thinking about the importance this relationship might have actually been to her – and how he had forced her into a corner to help him, just so he could possibly stick around, just so he could see her again.
“Please,” he said finally, looking at Jacob with desperation, “please don’t say anything.”
𝙰𝚒𝚗𝚜𝚕𝚎𝚢
I sat on one of the couches in the basement, eyes glued to the television as Travis and Trenton argued back and forth on pizza toppings for their dinner, prolonging our dart game far longer than necessary. TJ had been called up to Seattle for investigations, while Jennie worked double shifts to cover the incoming trauma’s. The collapse of all the dominos linking all pieces of our family had both Trent and I on edge – hence the current ongoing battle between my brothers.
“Oh my god,” I cried, rolling my neck. “Just pick something already, I’m starving!”
“Just let Ains pick something!” Travis growled, ripping the pamphlet out of Trent’s hands.
“Uh, no,” he laughed once, taking the menu back, “she likes shit like chicken on her pizza – I don’t fucking think so.”
“What’s wrong with chicken?”
“It doesn’t belong on pizza – that’s what’s wrong with chicken!”
I rubbed my temples, blowing out my breath slowly. Each passing day I spent confined in my parents house made me more irritated and miserable. The boys had not stopped fighting, Embry became more preoccupied as the pack circled in on the final safehouse Alice and Edward had provided. In an effort to ease his mind, Leah had asked that Trent keep an eye on me.
Of course I had objected, but that didn’t seem to matter much, seeing as I was (essentially) moved home.
Once food had been ordered, and I stuffed my face with my share, I retired to my bedroom. I flipped the lock on my knob, sighing as I leaned my back against the door. I had half-expected Embry to be settled into my bed, instead the room sat empty and cold.
I wandered to where my phone had been plugged in, scrolling through the notifications. Two messages from Embry.
Won’t see you 2night. Jake needs me to cover his shift.
Sleep tight xoxo
I smiled to myself, pulling the phone to my chest as I collapsed onto the bed. Iyah looked up from the floor, tilting his head to the side in question. “For one night.” I nodded, laughing when the puppy happily joined me on the mattress, circling into his place in the corner. “Just don’t tell Embry, kay?”
The dog huffed in response, enticing another giggle from me. I scratched behind his ear, pressing a kiss to his muzzle before I rolled onto my back.
I wondered what Jacob was up to – being as responsible as he was, it wasn’t like him to pass along his duties to anyone else. Especially not Embry. That was moreso what Seth was for, being in his prime. I ripped my hair tie from my head, stretching my legs out as the moon casted the shadows of the treetops into my room.
From somewhere in the distance, I could hear a wolf howl.

Third Person POV
Jacob pulls into the Uley driveway with Bella still on the back of his bike. They went straight there after leaving Forks High School, knowing that Hayley has to change before hanging with the pack. He also wanted Bella to see his friends before they go off on their own.
“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Bella asks, taking off the helmet. “I'm a vampire girl, remember?”
Before he can answer, Hayley pulls into her normal parking spot nearby. Almost immediately, Jared, Paul, Embry and Quil pile out of the house, shoving the last pieces of their chicken wings down their throats. The Beta rolls her eyes as she gets out of her truck.
“You guys couldn’t wait for me?” She walks toward them.
“Of course not! We’re growing wolves!” Paul smirks at her, taking another bite of his wing.
“What am I, chopped liver?” She shakes her head, stopping beside her boyfriend. “Where’s Kim?”
“She couldn’t skip. She had a project to present today.” Jared says, shrugging, despite missing her.
Bella and Jake get off his bike and take a couple steps toward them.
“Well, look who’s back.” Embry says, wrapping his arm around his imprint, looking at the leech-lover.
“What up, Bella?” Quil says, grinning.
“Quil, you too?” She asks, shocked.
“Yep. Finally made the pack.” He smiles, glancing at Embry and Hayley. “I’m glad you’re here, Bella. Maybe we can get a break from Jake’s obsessive inner monologue.”
“I wish Bella would call.” Paul speaks up, mimicking Jacob.
“I wish Bella wouldn’t call.” Jared chimes in.
“Maybe I should call Bella.” Embry smirks.
“Maybe I should call Bella and hang up.” Quil adds.
“Alright, you can shut up now.” Jake says, rubbing the back of his head.
Bella smiles as the pack laughs, a few of the guys pushing each other while Embry steps back with Hayley. Sam and Emily exit the house, grin on her face as she sees the pale face girl in front of her.
“Bella!” She says, moving to hug her. “I was wondering when we’d see your face around here again.”
The younger girl hugs back, smiling softly, whispering a soft, ‘same here’. When they pull away, Emily steps back next to her fiancée who wraps an arm around her, giving Bella a pleasant nod hello.
“Sam, we good?” Jacob speaks up, looking toward his Alpha.
“We’re good. She won’t be getting through our line anytime soon.” He answers.
There's a small awkward silence which Hayley decides to break.
“Alright, I’m gonna change and meet you boys on the beach.” She says, turning to her boyfriend.
The rest of the pack, minus Sam, Emily, Hayley, Embry and Jacob rush into the trees, laughing and ad-libbing their own macho challenges, excited for a day on the beach. Bella watches as Hayley and Embry whisper to one another, looking deep into each other’s eyes. Their connection is deeply intimate. Bella bites her lip and looks away as soon as their lips touch, allowing them to have their moment.
Her eyes land on Sam and Emily, who are doing almost the same thing. Between these two couples, she can tell they’re madly in love. Deep down she knows her relationship with Edward is nowhere near as passionate as these two couples right in front of her. For now, she’ll hope that it will one day.
Sam and Embry rush into the trees while Hayley and Emily walk inside the house, leaving Jacob and Bella alone.
“Come on. We can go back to my house.”
They pair silently go back to his house, Bella not wanting to bring up what she wants to talk about until she knows she’s far away from the pack.
“So, uh, is Quil the only new pack member?” She asks, glancing at her best friend.
“No. Seth Clearwater, Harry’s son, also phased. He’s only fifteen. One of the youngest we’ve had. Sam keeps him home studying, but he’s chomping at the bit.” He answers, pushing his bike toward his garage. “I’m just glad it wasn’t Leah.”
“Come on, don’t be such a guy.” Bella rolls her eyes.
“No, it’s not a chick thing.” He shakes his head. “Hayley is in the pack, you know. It’s more of a triangle thing. We would have to live with a Leah, Sam, Emily pain-fest. Wolf telepathy, remember?”
“So, Sam dumps Leah for Emily?” She raises an eyebrow as she stops before the door.
“It wasn’t like that.” He says, looking toward her. “Sam hates himself for hurting Leah. But, Emily was The One.”
“Yeah, I guess it sort of chooses you sometimes.” She says, thinking of her boyfriend.
“It’s more than some crush, Bella.” He sighs. “Sam imprinted on Emily. Like how Jared imprinted on Kim and Hayley and Embry imprinted on each other.”
“Do I even want to know what that is?” Bella asks, watching him as he begins to walk into the garage.
She follows behind him, leaning against another bike as he pushes the kick-stand down, thinking of how to explain this to her.
“Imprinting on someone is like…” He pauses, remembering Sam, Jared and Embry’s words. “Like when you see her, everything changes. All of a sudden, it’s not gravity holding you to the planet.”
About ten minutes away on the beach, Hayley runs onto the sand, rushing straight toward her boyfriend.
“It’s her. Nothing else matters.” Jacob continues, remembering moments his best friend and Beta have had.
Embry turns around and catches his imprint, picking her up slightly. She laughs, wrapping her arms around his neck as he swings her in a small circle.
“You would do anything…Be anything for her…” His voice softening slightly.
Hayley puts her feet down on the sand, keeping her arms around her boyfriend’s neck. He grins and leans his forehead against her own, looking deep into her eyes, a smile appearing on her as she looks into his.
“It sounds like you know the feeling.” Bella says, watching him. “Have you…imprinted on someone?”
“You’d know if I had.” He shakes his head slightly before looking at his bike. “I just have a direct line to Sam, Jared and Embry’s thoughts.”
Embry leans down and gently presses his lips to Hayley’s, allowing the always flowing sparks fly through them once again. They quickly break from the kiss when a soccer ball hits Hayley in the leg.
“Break it up, lovers.” Paul calls out. “Ley, you’re on my team! I ain’t losing this time!”
“Then I get Embry!” Quil yells out, wanting at least one of his best friends.
The couple laugh and shake their heads before looking at one another.
“I guess we’re split this time.” She says with a smirk.
“Oh, you’re going down!” He grins, smacking her butt softly before taking off down the beach toward his best friend.
She gasps and runs after him, giggling as she does. For the next two hours, the pack kicks the soccer ball around, trying to score a goal. Sam, Embry and Quil on one team while Jared, Paul and Hayley are on the other. Despite all of Embry and Sam’s sabotage on Hayley, the teams end up tied. Emily showed up half way through with food for them, causing a small break, but they’re right back at it before long.
“Ley!!” Paul calls her name, kicking the ball toward her.
She stops the ball with the inside of her left foot, before kicking it down the beach, alternating between each foot. Embry quickly runs up behind her and wraps her by the waist, picking her up causing her to squeal loudly. Emily laughs from the blanket she put down, far enough away she doesn’t get hurt by the ball.
“Quil! Get it!” Embry yells out, holding his girlfriend back.
Before his best friend can get a chance to get the ball, she kicks it as hard as she can from her boyfriend's arms, directly toward Jared who scores the winning goal.
“Yeah!” Paul cheers, jumping in the air, throwing his fists up.
“How?!” Quil falls to his knees in the sand.
“Is that even legal?” Sam asks, looking toward his fiancée. “Ref! What do you think?”
“In my expert opinion…” She grins, pausing for suspense. “It’s a goal!”
“Hell yeah!” Hayley throws up a fist as her boyfriend puts her back down.
“Not fair!” Embry shakes his head, smiling.
“It’s not fair you two kept picking on our best player!” Jared calls out, walking toward them after grabbing the ball.
“Oh, it’s totally fair!” Sam laughs.
“Ehhh…” Emily smirks slightly.
“HA!” Hayley laughs. “Emily for the win!”
“Em! You’re supposed to be on my side!” Sam calls out, running toward her.
She squeals and jumps up from the blanket, taking off straight toward the Beta of the pack.
“I got you, Em.” Hayley wraps her arms around Emily, both giggling.
“Oh, no!” Their Alpha laughs. “What am I gonna do? My sister is hiding my woman…”
He grins at his pack members who know exactly what he’s thinking, without their wolf mind-link. Suddenly, all the males are running toward them causing them to squeal and run down the beach, laughing as they go.
After the fun and exciting week, Hayley knew something was going to happen. The other shoe finally dropped as some would say. After patrolling all night, she thought she was going to have a decent nap then have an amazing date with her boyfriend…but nothing ever goes her way. Not even an hour into her sleep, Jacob calls her, knowing her brother was on his own patrol.
Apparently some of Bella’s items have gone missing and Edward smelled an unknown vampire in her bedroom. Hayley sighs to herself before rushing to Forks, knowing where the Chief of Police lives. She walks up to the house, yawning softly. She knows she could have sent someone else to be with Jacob but her and Sam are the two that can make decisions.
Sam can overthrow her since he’s Alpha but 99.99% of the time, he follows her decision, knowing she knows what she’s doing and has everyone’s best interest when she decides something.
“What’s going on?” She asks, stopping next to her pack member, glancing at Bella and Edward who are standing a few feet away from them.
“Edward smelled some random vampire in Bella’s bedroom so we’re going to patrol outside her house from now on…” Jake starts but Hayley raises her hand to stop him.
“We’re going to what?” She bites her lip, stopping herself from yelling at him.
“We’re going to be patrolling here now.” He says, raising an eyebrow.
“Since when, Jacob?” She asks, watching him. “Did you talk to Sam about this?”
“No. But that’s why you’re here.”
“We already have to patrol extra due to the red-head, now we have to extend back to Forks…again?”
“Just Bella’s house. We have to protect her.” He says, crossing his arms.
Hayley shakes her head and thinks for a moment. If this vampire is in Forks, innocent people could get hurt. Not just his leech-lover.
“Hey.” Edward speaks up, looking at the Beta.
“Just shut up, leech. You’re lucky I’m even considering talking to my brother about this.” She glares at him before looking at her pack mate. “Alright. Let’s go investigate and I’ll call Sam.”
“Thank you, Hay.” Jacob says before leading her to the door. “Bella, can you show Hayley to your room?”
She nods, thankful for the Beta right now. Edward starts to follow them, but the female pack member shakes her head.
“You stay here. You can contaminate the stank with your own.” She says, turning around to walk into the house.
The trio walk inside, straight to the human’s bedroom. Both Hayley and Jake sniff around the room, finding a different scent than the Cullen’s near her desk and closet. The Beta sighs and pulls her phone out of her pocket, calling her brother. He should be off patrol and Quil should have taken his place.
“Hay? Is everything okay?” He answers. “Shouldn’t you be sleeping?”
“Yeah.” She sighs. “So, a leech has been in Bella’s bedroom.”
“She’s dating one. Of course…”
“No. Like, an unknown leech. It’s not the red-head and it’s not a Cullen. Jake wants us to start patrolling here to make sure that she’s safe.”
She can tell he rolled his eyes by the way he sighed in her ear.
“The only reason I’m considering it is because if it’s been in her room, it can be anywhere. He could have hurt the Chief.” She continues, not wanting him to immediately dismiss her.
After a moment, he finally speaks. “Alright. Starting tonight we’ll start patrolling two on the rez and two at Bella’s.”
“Thanks, Sam.”
“Don’t thank me, Hayley. You’re right. Chief’s a good guy and he’s innocent in this. Don’t want him hurt.” He sighs. “Come home and get to sleep. I’ll have Jake and Paul have tonight so you and Embry can have that date.”
“Love you.”
“Love you, too.”
She hangs up and looks at Jake, who nods, already knowing what his Alpha had said.
“I appreciate it, you guys.” Bella says, looking between the pack members.
The Beta shrugs. “Not like we haven’t done shit like this before.”
She immediately turns around and walks out of the room, wanting to leave the house. Edward, who has been staring at the house, rushes toward the front door when his girlfriend exits.
“Whoever it was, he left his stink behind.” Hayley says, looking at the mind-reader. “It’ll be hard to miss when we cross it again.”
“We’ll handle it from here.” Jake says, continuing from his Beta’s words.
“We don’t need you to handle anything. Or anyone.” Edward shakes his head.
Jacob steps forward so he’s chest to chest with the vampire, glaring at him.
“I could care less what you need.”
“Alright, we’re done here.” Edward snaps.
“No, you’re done here.” He says, as if he had the best comeback ever.
Bella moves between them, wanting to keep the peace.
“Stop, I’m tired of this. From now on I’m Switzerland, okay.” She pushes on their chests but since they’re both supernatural beings, neither move. “Stop. Hayley, help.”
“All I’m going to say is I could care less what the leech has to say. Or you for that matter, Bella.” She says, stepping forward when Bella moves to push them apart, this time they actually move due to her strength. “Jacob, you need to back down. Now. The only reason I’m agreeing to this, with my brother too, is for the Chief. He’s got no idea what’s going on. He can’t help who his daughter quote un-quote ‘falls in love with’. You made your bed, Bella. You lie in it. You too, Jake.” She glances between them, her tone short. “But Chief Swan is innocent and I’ll be damned if y’all do anything to let him get hurt.”
“But, the pack…” Jake starts.
Hayley growls and holds her hand up. “Don’t give me that shit, Jacob Black. Don’t act like you actually care about the pack. You just want to keep your little leech loving girl here safe. And you don’t care who you hurt in the process. Otherwise you’d have never snuck off and all but told her about the stuff you knew you weren’t supposed to.”
Before Jake can say another word, she turns and glares up at the tall, lanky vampire. Her inner wolf wanting to get at him, but she’s keeping at bay, minus the venom in her voice.
“As for you,” She pokes his chest. “We’re Spirit Warriors. This is what we’re made for. To kill vampires like you, so we can handle it. If you would like to help, great! If not, stay the hell out of my way. I don’t like you. I don’t trust you. And you may have charmed Bella with your ways, but you ain’t going to get me too. You may be a ‘vegetarian’ but you’re still a cold blooded killer at heart, and when it comes down to it, you’ll only care about getting what you want. No matter who you hurt in the process. It’s your kind that got a damn good man killed. A respected, loved, sweet man. And I won't let you hurt one of his best friends too just so your ego can be stroked. You and your family are already on thin ice for getting Harry killed. And that ice cracked when you almost stepped onto our land. And, so help me, if you don’t want to help, and you do get in my way, I will personally be the one to rip you limb from limb. Not my brother. Not Jacob. Not my imprint. Not one of the big burly guys. But me. And I’ll enjoy it too.”
Edward swallows the little bit of venom that built up in his throat, slightly terrified of the younger woman. Bella, nervous by the speech by the pack member, steps forward, wanting to ease the tension.
“So, are you willing to at least try to work together?” She glances between the men.
Neither men move. Despite both knowing exactly what Hayley was talking about, neither of them want to admit they’re wrong but Edward, wanting to be the bigger man, licks his lip and nods. Jacob blows air out of his nose and nods with him.
“Great. We’re almost on the same page.” Hayley rolls her eyes.
“Alright, so you need to coordinate.” Bella speaks up again, looking between the three of them now. “You know, schedules and stuff.”
The men look away from each other, not wanting to speak so the Beta throws her hands up.
“Goddamn it, you guys.” She snaps. “The pack will take nights. Sam already said Jacob and Paul will start tonight.”
“Will days work for your family?” Bella asks, looking at the vampire who just nods. “Good. See? How hard was that?”
Hayley rolls her eyes and turns around, walking back toward the forest, wanting to go home.
“Hay? Where are you going?” Jake raises an eyebrow.
“I had work last night and only slept an hour due to this bullshit so I’m going home.” She calls back, never stopping her steps.
After all the shifters got used to their new patrol schedules for both the res and Forks, Billy decided to host a bonfire. A La Push Pack Bonfire consists of a couple things. They go to the beach and the pack members grab tons of wood to burn while using the larger pieces of wood for seats. Emily and Hayley cook all day so there is a small buffet for everyone to have before Billy tells the legends to the new pack members.
In this case it would be Seth and Quil. The council members decided amongst themselves, with the help of Sam and Hayley, that Bella should be there for this bonfire as well. She has her own part in the legends now since she decided that after graduation she was going to be…changed in another area. The pack can’t do anything about it.
It’s not their choice to make, as long as it’s not in Forks or La Push, they have no say. All they can do is tell her how the shifters came to be. Hayley, having already heard the legends multiple times, still loves hearing them. It always feels like the very first time when she and Sam sat in the Black’s backyard with the council.
She smiles to herself as she mixes the potato salad. Despite being a shifter, she doesn’t hear her imprints footsteps as he enters the kitchen. He watches his girlfriend and Emily talk amongst themselves for a moment before Emily turns around to grab a plate. She jumps and puts her hand on her chest, but before she can speak, Embry puts his finger to his lips.
She raises an eyebrow but nods, confused on what the shifter is going to do. He slowly walks toward his girlfriend, hoping she doesn’t move. Hayley, concentrating hard on the potato salad, jumps when warm arms wrap around her waist.
“Embry!” She laughs, shaking her head. “You scared the shit out of me.”
“That was the plan.” He chuckles, holding her close.
Emily smiles and grabs a few of the already finished foods before taking them to the car, allowing them to have a moment. She knows they’ve rarely seen each other lately due to the amount of shifts they’ve had to cover. She’s lucky she got to see Sam during the day and most of the night. Hayley turns around in her boyfriend’s arms and grins.
“Well, hello, Mr. Call.” She wraps her arms around his neck.
“Hello, Miss Uley. Do you come here often?” He teases, bending slightly to place his hands on her ass.
In a quick movement, he lifts her up and places her on the counter, making sure not to bother the potato salad. Since she never had the ‘wolf growth spurt’, Embry is over a foot taller than her so that is the reason he’s always lifting her up. With her on the counter, she’s now a little taller than him but not by much.
“Hmmm, I come here every few days.” She jokes before moving her hand to his neck, pulling him in for a passionate kiss.
He happily returns it, pulling her closer, allowing her legs to wrap around his waist. The couple have only been together for a few months but it seems like they’ve been dating for years. Especially with all the supernatural things happening, with him phasing and all of the red-head drama going on.
They’re so madly in love but neither want to say it first, thinking it would be too early in their relationship. They pull away, gasping softly for air before Hayley leans down to put her forehead against his.
“Wow, Mr. Call. I better not tell my boyfriend about that.” She teases softly, biting her lip.
He playfully growls and pulls her in for another kiss but before it can get any more passionate, a small cat call is heard from the back door. They pull away and look over his shoulder toward the noise.
“Well, well, well…” Paul smirks, crossing his arms before leaning against the door. “Maybe I should call in Sam to see what his little sister is doing in the kitchen.”
“Oh, please! Like he’s never done this with his girl. Shouldn’t you be doing my laundry or something, Paul?”
Rolling her eyes as she speaks, Hayley grabs a wooden spoon out of the container on the counter next to her. She throws it as hard as she can, causing the shifter to laugh and run out of the house. Embry shakes his head and puts his forehead against her shoulder, mumbling to her.
“We can never have a few minutes to ourselves.”
“Nope.” She says, playing with his slightly growing hair.
He sighs through his nose, before standing straight. He presses a quick but passionate kiss to her lips before helping her down from the counter.
“I’ll see you later. I have a Lahote to beat up.”
She smiles as she watches him run from the house toward the beach, knowing that’s where their other pack member will be. Turning back around, she grabs the foil and covers the bowl she was previously working on.

Here you go, I hope you like it! <3
Twilight Wolfpack Masterlist
Lucky night
“Em, my sweetest boy, friend of a lifetime, best friend for the eterni- “
“Cut it off. What the hell do you want Quil?” Embry interrupted him brutally. When Quil started a phone call in that way, it meant one thing, that Embry was fucked, completely fuckety-fucked.
“I matched with some- “
“No.”
“But you didn’t even hear everyth- “
“I said no, Quil.”
“EMBRY! Listen to me, she’s hot.”
“NO.”
“Embry, you won’t ruin my weekend of wild sex just because you’re stupid! You’re coming”.
“In what language do you want me to say it? Spanish… NO!”
“Embry, man”.
“No, I won’t be your sideman for your 100th date of this month, you sick little wolf whore”.
And then the phone call ended.
Embry couldn’t recall all the blind double dates he had to go to because Quil matched with someone on Tinder. Seriously, that guy matched with every living thing, and poor Embry he was the side companion who always had to settle for the boring side girl who didn’t want to be there too.
How many times he and the “other” girl had to sit there, in a restaurant or a bakery or a cafe and watch the lovebirds say stupid things. And it went over and over and over again since Quil was not interested in going out with the same girl twice.
“Why should I waste time with the same girl if one day I’ll meet my imprint. Until then, this boy here just wants to have fun”, he said while downloading that damn app on his phone.
He was not entirely wrong though, Embry had to admit, but he couldn’t imagine that his old friend would have become a womanizer.
How many girls could have been interested in Quil?
Apparently, a lot. But like, really a lot.
But this time, oh this time Embry wouldn’t have let Quil convince him. Going on another blind date with another side girl was out of the question, he would have rather spent his Saturday night playing video games with the pack than go out with Quil again.
How Embry ended up in Quil’s car on that Saturday evening, though, was a mystery.
“Damn me! This is the last time, Quil, clear?” he shouted, while his best friend was grinning.
“You are incapable of saying no, Em. I could ask you to jump out of the car now and you’d do it.”.
“Ok, this is absolutely wrong. I would rather punch you out of this stupid car. And once this nightmare ends, I’ll surely punch you in the face. Multiple times”.
“Yeah, yeah, sure buddy”.
Embry spent the entire ride to Port Angeles promising himself to not end in Quil’s trap ever again.
After 30 minutes of Quil singing RED (Taylor Swift’s version) on a loop, they finally arrived at the pub where this blind double date was supposed to happen.
Quil and Embry couldn’t show more different emotions, the first one was excited and was already thinking about his dessert while the other one… well, Embry’s face showed it all.
“Stop being a buzzkill and smile, if this goes wrong, I’ll kill you”. Quil whispered while they were heading to the entrance.
The pub was full of people, all laughing and drinking and chitchatting about different things. The two friends could distinctly hear anything that every person was saying in that place.
Wolf hearing, you know.
Embry rolled his eyes, already preparing himself for another boring night.
“They were supposed to be here already”.
Embry frowned.
“So, they’re not here?”
“I cannot see them anywhere”, Quil replied, with a worried tone of voice.
On Embry’s face, a little sarcastic smirk started to appear.
“Would it be possible that this girl just dumped you?”
“Nah, man, she was so into me! It’s impossible!”
“There’s a little pitch in your voice, man. You’re not fooling me”. Embry said, before bursting into a thunderous laugh and patting his best friend on his shoulders.
It was the first time that someone dumped Quil on a Tinder double date and the guy was almost destroyed.
“A-Ah, it can’t be. It’s impossible”, he said, taking his phone out of the pocket and looking for her number. He tried to call her, but the voice mail kept going.
“She ghosted and dumped you the same night, nice job!” Embry continued, laughing again.
Quil clicked his tongue, rolling his eyes.
“Fuck, she really dump-ghosted me. I wasn’t expecting that”.
And you could see it in his eyes that he really was expecting something completely opposite to what was happening.
“Come on, it’s not the end of the world.” His best friend said, handing him a beer.
“yeah no, but I lost my fucking bet! I own Paul 50 bucks”.
“And you own me a Frozen yoghurt”.
“I really need to explain to you how betting works, again. Kim is better than you at this.” Quil said, bumping his shoulder into his best friend’s one.
“Come on, let’s get out of here. I hate the smell of all these hormones”, continued Embry with a disgusted expression.
The two wolves immediately headed to the exit, Embry still patting Quil on his shoulder and Quil sighing again and again. His ego was hurt, a lot. But he knew that there was nothing that a night spent playing video games with Embry and Jake couldn’t heal.
“Quil? Is that you?” a warm and trembling female voice asked. It came from behind.
Embry and Quil turned at the same time, curious to know who that tiny voice belonged to.
It was a short girl, russet skin and long straight hair. She was covered in an oversized teddy coat because for humans, that night was an extremely cold one.
“Ariel?” Quil asked, getting closer to her. It was dark in the parking lot and even wolf-eyes couldn’t see that girl clearly.
“Yes! It’s me, I’m so sorry my car broke, and my phone… well it’s gone too”, she said taking a few steps forward, just the ones that were needed for the two boys to see her face completely.
And that moment, Embry’s body completely froze. Time and space were not the same anymore, nothing mattered, nor Quil and his stupid double dates or the videogames or his inability to bet. He stood there, looking at the small girl like she was a bright fallen star or even better, a goddess that came down on Earth only for him.
That was the only time Embry was truly happy to have accepted Quil’s forced invitation to a date.
“Are you ok, Ariel? What happened?” Quil asked her, getting really close to her.
Maybe a little bit too close according to Embry’s new jealousy.
“My car stopped in the middle of nowhere and my phone fell from my purse, I was only able to call a taxi to come here. I’m sorry to be so late”. She was indeed really sorry, her voice and her body could tell, and Embry was slowly dying inside because no, she could not be sad, not under his watch.
“Oh, it’s ok, no worries! Are you alone? Where’s your friend?”
“Last minute change of plans, I’m sorry again”.
“No worries at all, my friend Embry her…”
It took Quil only one quick look to understand what happened. He looked at Embry, and then at Ariel and then at Embry again.
“ARE YOU KIDDING ME?” He shouted, not believing to his own eyes. It was all just a stupid joke, he was sure.
Was he?
Was it really just a joke?
“Is everything ok, is your friend ok?” Ariel asked, getting closer to Embry.
“Hi, I’m Ariel,” she said to him, raising her face to meet his gaze. “I’m sorry you had to wait here with Quil for me”.
Embry had to collect all his remaining strength to articulate a sentence that had a meaning. Her eyes were so mesmerizing, and he could have gladly spent the rest of the night looking into them.
He smiled at her.
“Ah no worries, everything is fine. We’re happy you’re safe and sound”, he said with his warmest tone and husky voice.
“Were you going home? I probably wasted your time”, Ariel said – her attention growing more and more on Embry that she almost forgot she was there to see Quil.
“Actually… no. Quil owns me a frozen yoghurt and we were going to get some. Want to join?”
“NO”.
“I would love to”.
Quil and Ariel replied at the same time.
“Perfect”, Embry replied back, moving to his side to show her where their car was.
In the meantime, Quil was there a few steps away from the two newly lovebirds, looking at them with an angry expression.
How could it be possible? She was supposed to be his date. Not Embry’s fucking imprint.
Embry glanced at him, smirking.
“You coming?” he asked Quil while opening the passenger door for Ariel, and helping her sit in the car.
Quil growled and covered in a few seconds the distance from the car. He opened the driver’s door, but Embry immediately stopped him.
“Wrong door, man”.
Quil growled again. “You own me this”, he whispered.
“I know”, Embry grinned.
And he meant it.
Embry really owned Quil everything from that night on.
Who would have known that for the first time he would have been the main character instead of his best friend?
Apparently, fate did.
The same fate that let Ariel’s car break in the middle of nowhere.
That nowhere being the Quileute’s reservation borders, precisely.
What were the odds?

Wildest dreams, part 18
Summary: Waking up, Y/N expected to find herself in Paul’s arms. Instead, she found herself clinging to bed sheets and an empty bed.
Warnings: fluff, angst, sexual content, swearing
Wildest Dreams Masterlist
————————————
Paul promised he’d be there when her eyes opened. She remembers his words clearly, that wasn’t a dream. They made love, he drove her to the brink of madness and back and then he promised to be there when she wakes, so where the hell is he now?
A lump forms at the back of Y/N’s throat as she sits up, clinging to the bed sheets carrying his scent. It’s unmistakable – his promise is broken. Paul isn’t by her side, he’s not even in the room.
Inhaling sharply, her chest shudders. Closing her eyes she licks her lower lip before catching it between her teeth. Part of her wishes she could stop time and stay in that moment he held her so close that nothing stood between them – not even air could penetrate the tight bond between their bodies as they surrendered every atom of their beings to each other.
But she can’t stop time and he’s gone.
Why?
Where?
Swallowing thickly, she throws the sheets aside and stands. It doesn’t make sense. If he wanted to run, he could have done so sooner. He wouldn’t do it to her now. She refuses to believe he’d do it on purpose. Something must have happened.
Putting on her clothes, she shivers. Cold always finds her, sinking its hooks in her skin, spreading underneath violently until her muscles tremble in an effort to generate some warmth to battle the ice in her veins. Paul keeps the cold away, but without him it’s like falling through the ice into the freezing water below.
Checking her phone, she finds no new messages. Not from Paul at least.
Jacob sent dozens of texts. Embry had sent a few as well, and even Emily tried calling. She remembers her phone vibrating last night but in that moment the world could have been coming to an end and she’d refuse to acknowledge it because being with Paul was enough for her. If it was the end, she was already with the only person she’d watch it all burn to nothingness.
Huffing, she dials Paul.
From nowhere came the sound of a cellphone ringing, a classical cover of “Stay with me” by Sam Smith echoing the room. It’s on the nightstand on Paul’s side of the bed, her photo flashing on the screen.
Her heart quickens, eyebrows furrowing. He didn’t just leave, he wouldn’t have left his phone or her. Not after last night.
Rushing downstairs, she pops into the kitchen first. “Paul?”
He’s not here.
“Paul?!” She calls out, her heart dropping as the silence continues. “Fuck”, her hands begin to shake as she opens Jacob’s messages first.
“Is everything k?”
“Call me if u wanna talk”
“If u don’t wanna talk, just text me back, pls. Just so I knw ure home.”
“I’m getting worried”
“I’ll call ur dad. If you dnt text me back, I will.”
“Y/N wtf, I called ur dad and he says ure not home. Call me ASAP!”
“Paul’s not answering either and I’m seriously starting to panic”
“I’ll stop by his house to check on him and then I’ll look 4 u”
“I heard enough to traumatize me for the rest of my life. Glad you’re ok.”
Rolling her eyes, she chews on her bottom lip. She hoped to get a “We had an emergency, sorry to steal your man so early in the morning” text, something that would pacify her, but she’s never been quite good at finding herself in situations that had no answers when her mind would jump to worse case scenarios.
“I’m not paying for therapy. Just wanted to check if you guys had patrol or some vampires to chase this morning?”
Dropping back on the couch, she stares up at the ceiling. Who would have known she’d find herself falling for the biggest playboy she’s ever met, that he’d turn out to be her cosmic love and that she’d go from wishing never to see him again to wishing never to lose him? It’s incredible how unpredictable life can be – one moment can change it irreversibly, one person can make it so you never look at anything you’ve known the same way.
“No. Sam’s out with the pups. Why?”
Shaking her head, she bounces her right foot on the floor. Something’s not right. He wouldn’t just leave her like this – no note, no text, hell, his phone’s still in the bedroom.
“I can’t find Paul”
“What do you mean you can’t find him?!”
She snorts at the way Jacob’s text become proper and grammatically correct whenever he’s angry, same as it used to be. He used to teach her slang and how to shorten words to make texting easier back when each text cost and they had character limits. She’s never quite liked it, finding ways to shape her thoughts in a different manner rather than using Jacob’s ridiculous one letter words.
“He said he’d be here and he’s not and his phone’s in the room”, she grimaces before walking to the window. Pulling the curtain aside, she sees his Jeep in the driveway. “His car is here too.”
It took less than a second after the Seen for Y/N’s phone to ring, Jacob’s name plastered over her screen.
“Tell me everything”, Jacob says, his breathing almost ragged.
“I doubt you want to heart everything”, Y/N reminds him.
“I didn’t mean the part where you two fucked, I mean after”, his voice is low, still raspy. He must have woken up because of her text.
“Before we fell asleep, he promised me he’d be here when I woke up. He wasn’t. I called his phone and it frickin’ rang in the fucking room. I looked around the house and he’s not here. His stupid fucking Jeep is in the driveway and I’m starting to freak out because there’s no way in hell he’d just leave the house without anything on him.”
“Look, don’t go anywhere. I’ll be there soon and we’ll figure it out together. Okay?”
“Jake”, she pauses.
“Don’t tell me not to come. I know we still have a long way to go before we get back to that friendship we had growing up, but I care about you and you’re upset and despite common sense, I care about Paul too. So, stay there. I’m on my way.”
Hanging up, Jacob immediately called Embry.
“What do you want”, Embry grumbles.
“Better wake up Mr. Sunshine, because we might have a situation on our hands.”
“What kind of a situation?”
“Paul’s gone.”
“Gone? Gone how?”
Rolling his eyes, Jacob grabs his helmet and heads to his old bike. “That’s what I’m not sure about. Y/N called and she can’t find him.”
“He’s probably off somewhere licking his wounds from last night. Remember when he found out Y/N moved away for college? He went into the woods for weeks and never spoke of her after he came home. And that’s BEFORE he imprinted on her.”
“I remember it just fine”, Jacob sighs.
“They fought and he’s imprinted on her, so I’m not worried. He’ll come back soon.”
“But they didn’t fight”, Jacob interrupts, “quite the opposite.”
“Huh?”
“I wanted to check on him last night and…those weren’t the sounds of a couple fighting.”
“What are you….oh….OH!”
“Exactly the sound she made last night. Several times.” Jacob grimaces. The last thing he needed was to hear his best friend moaning as she was getting frisky with Paul Lahote. If there’s something his younger self would never believe, it’s that Y/N would ever let Paul’s penis anywhere near her and yet it was quite literally attached to her last night and his stomach churns at the thought.
“Where the fuck is he then?!” Embry raises his voice and Jacob sighs.
“That’s why I’m calling you now. Shift and see if you can find him. I’ll go to his house and find Y/N before she spirals.”
“Be careful about it”, Embry warns.
“What are you trying to imply?”
“I know what goes through your head when Y/N is involved. I knew back then and I know now.”
“She’s in love with Paul. I’ve imprinted on another. I’m not going to do anything stupid.”
“I really wish I could believe you.”
“Get going, Em. Paul might be in some deep shit and I don’t want to look her in the eye and say we couldn’t help him because we spent too long talking about things that will never happen.”
“I’ll call if I find anything.”
Inhaling sharply, Jacob pockets his phone and puts his helmet on. He’s not delusional to think he would ever be a viable option to Y/N, nor would she ever be a choice he could embrace with his own imprint being out there in the world.
What Jacob does know is that Paul adores the ground Y/N walks on, has been since before any of them truly knew it. She’s in safe hands with Paul. For now, at least. While he’s gone, for whatever reason it may be, Jacob will step in and make sure the fate Paul saw while imprinting doesn’t befall her in his absence.
It didn’t take long for him to drive up to Paul’s house. Taking a good whiff, Jacob frowns. There are no unfamiliar scents lingering around. If a vampire came close, half the reservation would reek for hours. All of the wolves would be out, tracking down the source. But there are no vampires here. It smells distinctively of Paul and Y/N.
It’s painstakingly obvious they’re imprints based off their smell alone. Paul has a woody smell of pine clinging to him from his work in the lumberyard and all the time he spends in the woods as he patrols, while Y/N has a floral scent – a mixture of lilacs and lilies. Woody and floral – complementary in every possible way.
Shaking his head, his jaw clenches. She’s his best friend, she’s always been his favorite human being, the only one who could see who he is through all the bullshit walls he’s built over the years. Y/N has always understood him at his core, supported him when he needed her without even having to ask for it, pushed him to be better when all he wanted was to avoid the world and when he left her after shifting, it felt like he was taken apart with every passing day.
When they told him he’s never to talk to her again, Jacob accepted his fate but he would follow her home, terrified of something happening to her. He was always there, sun, rain or snow, Jacob was following her from the tree line, ready to step in. Y/N didn’t know, but he would have done anything to ensure she’d live a long life, even if it meant she’d hate him longer.
It’s depressing it took so many years for her to finally find out the truth. He’s been away, tied to his imprint instead of his best friend ever since Bella gave birth. In a way, he’s resented Renesmee for taking him away from his home…from Y/N. He never asked to imprint, if he could choose not to, he wouldn’t have an imprint.
For years, Jacob’s tried figuring out the purpose of him imprinting on a vampire hybrid baby that he felt no true romantic affection for. He’s felt duty, he’s felt protective after watching her grow up before his eyes. Despite what most imprints feel, Jacob only ever felt like a parental figure. He loves her, he does, but he’s not in love with her and he doesn’t see that changing. Ever.
Unlike Renesmee, Jacob’s loved Y/N his whole life and yes, there are dormant feelings always lingering somewhere inside. She was his first friend, the first person he danced with, his first kiss. She was the first person he could be vulnerable with, the first person he could act stupid around and the only person he could come to with his hands bloody and know he would face no judgment.
Making his way to the door, Jacob smiles when the door open wide before he even reaches them. Y/N’s standing in the doorway, her lips pressed in a thin line, her arms opening immediately and without a second thought, Jacob allows her to wrap those loving arms around his neck.
Holding her close, he breathes through his mouth in an attempt to ignore how strongly Paul’s scent clings to her, overpowering the freshness of her own scent Jacob was once addicted to.
“It’s gonna be okay”, Jacob whispers in her hair, closing his eyes as his grip on Y/N tightens. And that was a promise. One way or another, Paul will come back and Jacob will watch from the sidelines how in love his best friend is with the very man she once detested. He’ll watch and he’ll witness their ups and console her when they’re at their lows, but he’ll never let her see the pain it will bring him. She’ll never see the worry in his eye whenever he’s not around her for he never knows when it’ll happen.
It’s inevitable, Jacob of all people knows.
When he imprinted, Jacob saw his life with Renesmee. He saw himself by her side as she grew, taking her to school, taking photos of her and her prom date, waiting up for her when she snuck out to a party. It all came true. He saw himself walking her down the aisle with Edward, babysitting her son, growing older while she remains younger. That’s yet to happen, but it will. At some point in his life, he will give up shifting and he will age and one day, he’ll be free of this life for good.
If his visions were true, if every other wolf’s visions happened just as they did, so will Paul’s.
Jacob will do everything in his power to make sure it doesn’t, but in his heart he knows his time with Y/N is limited, therefore too precious to ever tell her his heart is like sand in which her footprints will never be erased by waves of the ocean of time.

Rebirth - Ch. 7 :
Illusion
Word count:4.2k
Summary: Bad teenage decisions.
OG Embry
Friday's school day came and went. Jasper even returned Aurora's sketch book. Bella and Aurora were at La Push when the infamous Jacob Black came. "Aurora, this is my friend Jacob, and Jacob, this is my friend Aurora." She waved as he gave a nod.
Jacob swept Bella away down the shore while Aurora sat on the beach blanket reading. A figure sat next to her. "Hey."
She looked up,"Hi."
He was tan, had a sharp yet round face, and had long black hair. It suited him. He was handsome. "Whatcha reading?"
Aurora turned the cover, "The Kite Runner."
"Any good?"
"Seeing as in halfway through with it and I just started yesterday, yeah, I'd say it's pretty good."
The boy laughed, "By the way, names Embry."
"Nice to meet you, name's Aurora."
"Like the princess?"
"I guess, but it's more of a family name."
"It's a pretty name for a pretty girl." Aurora blushed. It was a little cliche, but it was smooth. Aurora thanked him, and the two sat in silence, comfortable silence.
Bella and Jacob were quick, coming back, and then him and his friends headed out. Before the trip left, Embry turned back to Aurora. "You have a piece of paper and a pen."
Aurora nodded. "In the van." He helped her up, and she gave him what he asked for.
He scribbled something on there and gave it to her. "Text me with any other book recommendations." He winked and left.
"Really Aurora, another one?" Bella asked jokingly. Aurora and Bella got dropped off at Aurora's, and neither parent was home.
"What is this like… the third date?" Aurora asked. Bella nodded.
"I think so." They came inside, and Jacinda was there, Sudoko in hand.
"Hice sopa, pero está un poco fría. Lo calentará cuando tenga hambre."
"Okay, thank you. We'll eat in like an hour, Abuela." The older women nodded and waved them off. They were breaking her concentration.
The girls went up to Aurora's room. "So Jacob was telling me that there's a legend about the tribe's enemies, the Cullen's."
"Oh my god, really? What the fuck?"
"Yeah, something about them being cold ones and having this feud."
"Like vampires?" Aurora asked.
"I'm assuming."
Aurora worked it out, "I mean, it would explain their fast speed, how they were able to stop the car, and their weird changing color eyes."
Bella nodded rapidly,"Right! I feel like no one's noticed that they have gold eyes !"
"Yeah, I'm not sure why everyone thinks that's normal. But this is crazy. Vampires? What next werewolves? Pixies? Elves?"
Bella shrugged, not having an answer.
"I mean... I don't know Bella. Do they look like blood suckers?"
Again, Bella shrugged. "Oh! Besides that, I gave Jacob your number to give to his friend Embry?"
"Bella!"
"What? I mean, that whole thing with Jasper was a bust, right? Asshat, remember?"
"Well, what about Jacob, huh? Edward, asshat remember? Are you gonna move on with him?"
"Jacob is just a friend."
"Suuuure a 'friend.'"
Bella shoved Aurora's right shoulder with her left hand. "Damn trying to break my other shoulder, Bells?"
The weekend was spent with the two girls watching movies and doing homework. Also, I texted Embry about different books, but Bella was unaware of that. Sunday morning, Bella went home to change and shower. That morning, after Bella left, Aurora took her sketchbook and supplies and headed downstairs.
"Mama, can I go outside to sketch?"
"Yeah, but not for long. I don't need you to get lost." Aurora rolled her eyes and said a quick 'bye.'
Aurora walked to the tree line, memories of Jasper and her meeting replaying in her head. She sighed and ventured in.
She went to the same place where she met him and started to sketch. She sketched a circle, then a U, then 2 smaller ovals inside. Her flicks of lead were light and airy. After 30 minutes of drawing, the face she drew bared a remarkable resemblance of a certain blonde that she didn't want to think about. She drew him a brooding expression and stained, sharp teeth dripping blood.
She huffed and flipped the page. She thought of Embry and started a new face. She drew probably a face that looked similar to Embry but didn't capture him. On the 2nd one is when she was able to capture his likeness and energy.
She drew another Jasper, not finishing it, though, once she realized it was him. She drew his eyes. A grin with sharp teeth that she'll deny is his.
She drew until the sun went down. She squeezed in a drawing of her mom and grandma, her mom with a tiara and her grandmother smoking. She drew 2 outlines of faces of what could have Bella and Charlie, but she shut it after that. A piece of paper stuck out from the very beginning. It was lined paper.
She opened it and saw a number and Jasper Hale's cursive writing there.
'Here's my number Princess, text me when you can.'
Aurora assumed this was before the whole car ordeal. It had the nickname princess, which Jasper had, and stopped calling, hell even acknowledging her. She wanted to crumple it and rip it, but there was that tiny inkling of hope that this was his way to reconcile.
She entered the number on her phone. She hovered around the keyboard when a message popped up.
'Hey Aurora, got the kite runner! U were right, it is great, better hurry and finish it before I beat u ;)'
Aurora smiled at the message as she messaged back.
'Puhlease I'm on the last chapter. How are u gonna beat me?'
She felt as if someone was watching her, she looked up and around but there was no one there. Feeling slightly uneasy, she started to head home.
Jasper watched as she left. He had seen her frustrated drawings of him, which made him chuckle, but it was replaced by worry when she started to draw someone else.
He glared at the drawing of a boy he did not know. He wanted to step out of his hiding spot, to go and apologize, but when she read the paper and texted someone else, he stopped himself. This is what he wanted, no? For her to not be mixed up with vampires. To not be around her and constantly want to drain her?
He rushed home, angry at himself, at Edward, at vampires, but mostly at himself for letting her into his life and heart and then leaving her.
Everyone was hit with an intense rage when Jasper entered home. Carlisle and Esme shared a look. Him and Edward had been brooding the past two weeks or so, and it made the house unbearable. He hoped soon that the boys would change their mind, he honestly couldn't stand it anymore.
Esme knocked on Jasper's door, "Jaz?"
He took a deep breath, "Yeah?"
"You okay, honey?"
He nodded, not wanting to speak about her. Esme sighed at the boy's lack of communication. "Just know that whoever she is, I'm sure if you talk to her and apologize for whatever you have done, she'll forgive you."
"How do you know it was I who did something? And if that's even what I'm upset about? And what .... what if she won't?"
"A mother knows Jasper. Now, decide on what you're gonna do because this moping and being angry is not good for you." She gave a smile and left. Now it's time to talk to the sulking Edward.
Monday came, and Jasper was still undecided. Aurora was giving him the same treatment, and he couldn't blame her. She looks cute in her long sleeve cut sweater and dresses over her. He especially liked how it hugged every curve.
'Focus.' He slapped himself internally. Aurora's phone slightly buzzed, and she smiled at it.
He scowled, 'Who the fuck was making her smile like that.'
She didn't answer it, though, seeing as they were still in class discussing the book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Jasper skimmed the book but didn't read it fully. But he was going to buy tomorrow, he had all night. Once the class ended, Aurora checked the phone.
'Hey Aurora! Me, Jacob, and Paul stole a few drinks and are gonna drink it by a meadow place, wanna join? Bella should be going, Jacob texted her.'
'Sure, but only if Bella's going. Buddy system and all, plus my mom won't let me without her lol.'
'Sweet! See you after school.'
'Hey Bella you going after school ?'
'Yeah I want to see if Jacob found anything else.'
'Oh smart. Okok.'
She left, and Jasper watched her go. The day went by in a blur. Aurora and Bella texted their parents, saying they would walk and explore the woods a little bit with Jacob. Amora was on the fence, but Charlie convinced her that Jacob was a good kid and knew the forest well.
The 5 of them meet up and head by the meadow, opting to stay in the trees rather than the flowers.
They brought wine coolers and shots. Aurora was a little worried, she's never drank before. Bella declined the drink, but Aurora took a wine cooler. She was a little tipsy, as was Paul and Embry. Jacob had one, and Bella none.
Bella started her interrogation. And Paul was dozing off next to them. Embry and Aurora sat a little further away.
"The Kite Runner crushed me, Aurora."
"Oh, you finally made it to that part. I will not lie. It just gets sadder, I cried and cried." Her eyelids were a bit heavy.
"Nooo, you're lying." Aurora shook her head, and Embry slumped on her right shoulder.
"It's so sad, but I can't put it down."
"I know what you mean. It's for school, but I read ahead, and I couldn't stop myself." She giggled. The world was slightly swimming.
Embry wasn't as tipsy. His body heat was a little higher than usual the past day, and two he's drank before. He smiled at her.
"Any other recommendations?"
"For books ummmmmm no? Oh ! But for movies it's called... called um... oh Pans Labyrinth. So fucking good. Amazing."
"Oh well, when you put it like that, I have to see it now."
"Embry, we have to go!"
"Oh, I don't think we should leave Aurora like this by herself, or well for Bella to deal with."
"I've got her." A voice spoke from the clearing as Jasper emerged.
"Who are you?"
"Jaz!" Aurora said happily.
"You know him?" Embry asked hesitantly.
Bella spoke up this time, "Yeah that's her seat mate for like every class."
Jacob eyed him, "We have to take Paul home before he gets in trouble again. Plus he's burning up." He leaned towards Bella ,"Is he safe? Can you trust him with Aurora?"
Bella nodded. "Yeah, plus he's Edward's brother."
Jacob narrowed his eyes, trusting him a little less now.
"Go, go. Jaz and I will be fine here."
Bella wanted to go with Jacob, he was gonna search his library for her but she didn't want to leave Aurora alone.
"It's okay, I’ll stay-,"
"No go Bella, shoo."
"But Aurora-,"
"I said shoo!" She waved a dismissive hand.
"I'll take care of her Bella, I'll call you off her phone once she sobers up and is home."
Embry stayed quiet till now. "Sleepy?"
"Hm?" She gave a smile and her eyes crinkled. His heartbeat quickened and Jasper rolled his eyes at him.
"Call me if you need anything okay?"
She furrowed her eyebrows but nodded. "Okay Em's got it." She gave a thumbs up and Embry looked Jasper up and down.
Bella nodded and left with the three boys. She could trust Jasper with Aurora.
Aurora looked into Jasper's eyes,"Hmm. I've missed you, cowboy."
Jasper nodded, "I've missed you too, princess."
Aurora smiled and hugged him, "It feels so long since you called me that. It feels nice." Jasper could feel the blossoming happiness when he said her nickname.
He felt like shit. He doesn't know how much longer he could ignore her. "Come on, princess, let's get to mine since it's closer, I'll get you water, and then we'll head to yours."
She nodded, tiredly. "Okay Princess, get on my back."
Aurora shook her head no, "No, I'm too heavy."
"You're not darlin ', now come on."
She eyes him wearily, he was taller and looks strong, but still, Aurora was self conscious about her weight.
He slightly crouched, "Come on, little lady."
Aurora wanted to die of embarrassment. She lifted a leg and he gripped it, she lightly hopped up and he grabbed the other.
"Light as a feather, now hold on." She held on, but her eyelids were feeling heavy. He heard her heartbeat steady and ran towards his house up to his room.
He laid her down on his bed carefully because of her cast. He only had one because he liked to lay on the bed to read.
Everyone home heard the heartbeat. Esme walked up to his room, "Jaz?"
"This is the girl, she um... "
"Drank?"
He nodded, "But she isn't the type of girl to drink."
Esme nodded, "A lot of teenagers drink, and it looks like this was her first time."
"She only had a wine cooler."
Esme chuckled, "Oh my. Well I'll get you some water and I can run to the store to get some food."
Aurora woke up, and Esme was done shopping at 5.
She looked around and found Jasper reading their class assigned book. "Um."
He looked towards her, "Hey there, little miss. Feeling better?"
"My head hurts a little, but yeah, I'm okay. Where's my phone? And how did I get here?"
"The pack boys had to head home since one of them was sick. Bella went with them after I said I'd help."
"So she just left me with you?"
Jasper nodded, "Here, she wants you to call after you wake up."
Aurora nodded, and grabbed the phone. She called Bella who picked up instantly.
"Bella?"
"Aurora how are you feeling? Jasper said he'll help-"
"Bella what the fuck?"
The line went quiet, "You just left me with a semi random dude. I get it, you kind of know him and I like him but at the very least you should've come with us! If the roles were reversed and it was asshat Edward helping, there is NO WAY I'd just leave him with you drunk."
Bella was in shock. It had crossed the back of her mind, but she didn't think Jasper would ever do anything like that.
"But it's Jasper, h-."
"I don't care, it's fucked up Bella."
Bella wanted to cry. She didn't want Aurora to be in trouble, and Jasper seemed like the safest option.
"I'm so-,"
"Bye."
She hung up. Her eyes were watery. From one point, she understood, Jasper and her had a thing, and he was responsible and respectful, but still, to leave her alone when buzzed was just not something you do.
"I'm sorry. I just offered my help because Bella seemed stressed, and I didn't want you two to stumbling around the forest alone."
She nodded.
"I would nev-."
"I know. What bothers me is how Bella just left. Even the nicest guys have a wicked side, and that's not saying I think you're a murder or rapist or whatever. It's just the principle."
He nodded, understanding. "I understand, Princess."
She nodded, not realizing he was saying her nicknames. "Are you hungry? My mother is cooking you something."
"Oh god, did I make a fool of myself in front of your family? Fucking christ strike me now."
Jasper laughed, "No, I took you straight up, you passed out."
"That's it. Your mother probably thinks I'm some like hooligan that drinks all the time and does like drugs and is a bad influence."
She groaned and dropped her head in her hands. Jasper shook his head, "No, she knows you're a good kid, and sometimes even those kids want to try a taste of the bad side."
She shook her head, "That's it, I'm done for. I can't go and face her."
He laughed again. "If anything, I'm sure she thinks I'm the delinquent."
"Jasper Hale? The Forks High Bad Boy? Puhlease more like their western cowboy."
"First off, you're correct. Second off, I can be bad."
"Yeah, and the skies are red."
Jasper grinned. "I could've sworn it was, princess. Now come on, my mother is expecting you."
"You're positive that I'm not on her bad side?"
"Cowboy's honor." He said, raising his right hand.
She shook her head. Jasper clasped their hands together and led her down stairs.
Aurora's phone dinged, and it was her mother.
'Cariño where are you!
Bella went home to Charlie's and was crying. Are you okay, mi amor?'
'Sorry mama I forgot to tell you I'm at Jaspers to work on our AP history homework and honors chem.
And yea we got into a small fight...'
'AURORA!
Next time ask ! so im not worried out of my mind thinking your missing in the woods or something!'
"Can we pop outside really quick? For I can call my mom."
"Of course, this way." He led them around the leaving room, so a door outside. "Here, I'll be in the living room."
She called her mom, who picked up instantly, too. "AURORA EVANGELINE CORDOVA FLORES!"
Aurora winced, great her full name.
"Hi mama."
"¡No me mames! ¿Por qué no te preguntaste acerca de ir a casa de Jasper? ¡Y mucho menos enviarme un mensaje de texto!"
"Mamá, lo siento! Te prometo que no lo volveré a hacer. Bella se fue con Jacob y ellos después de que nos encontramos con Jasper. y luego fuimos a estudiar a él y luego Bella y yo nos peleamos por teléfono. Lo siento, debería haberte enviado un mensaje de texto."
Amora sighed, "¿Dónde estás ahora?"
"Jasper's."
"¿Ya casi has terminado de estudiar?"
"Almost. They invited me to stay over and eat, though. I called you to explain and ask."
"Okay, fine, you can stay and eat over there. And if whatever Bella did isn't too bad, try to fix it, okay?"
"Why, so you and Mr. Charlie can go out on dates? How many more before you officially tell us? 2 or 1?"
"AURORA!"
"It was a joke! Sorry, sorry, I was trying to lighten the mood."
"Yeah, wait til you get home."
"I was just playing," she whined.
"Yeah, yeah. Now go finish studying and go eat and come home, okay?"
"Okay, Mama."
"I love you cariño, see you soon."
"I love you too, Mama, see ya."
She hung up and walked over to the glass door. She opened it, she felt weird stepping inside with shoes. She opened it, and Jasper was there smiling at her. "So, are you staying princess?"
"Yeah, I can, but after I have to go straight home."
He nodded. Of course, he heard, but she wasn't going to tell her that. "Alright, let's go get you something to eat." He grabbed her hand again, and her stomach flipped.
He led her towards the kitchen, and there, Esme and Carlisle, were cooking chilaquiles? They were frying the tortillas and had cheese on the side, and eggs out and fresh salsa? Aurora was a little surprised.
Emse saw the couple and washed her hand from cutting the onions and tomatoes.
"Hello there! You must be Aurora, we've heard so much about you! It's lovely to meet you." Aurora glanced at Jasper, who conveniently was looking where.
"Hello! It is lovely to meet you as well. Jasper's mentioned you, but he didn't tell me you were so beautiful."
Esme chuckled, a bit of flattery never hurt.
"Hello, Dr. Cullen."
"Carlisle is just fine, Aurora. How is that shoulder holding up?"
"It's doing well, Mr. Carlisle. Sore and achy every now and then, but good."
He chuckled at Mr. Carlisle. "That is very good to hear. Don't forget to schedule that appointment." He wanted to ask her to remind Bella as well, but after that conversation, he thought it would be best not to.
"Here, take a seat. We made chilaquiles for you. Jasper mentioned you are of Mexican descent, we spent a couple of ye-months in Jalisco and picked up a couple of recipes."
"Oh, really, that's so cool! My family is from Jalisco." Aurora noticed the slight slip up but didn't acknowledge it.
"What a coincidence." Carlisle clapped his hands, finishing off the plating.
It looked pretty good. There was only one plate, though. "Oh, are you guys not going to eat?"
"Oh no dear we ate before you came over and are pretty full still." Aurora nodded, and started to eat.
"This is really delicious. Thank you again."
Esme smiled, "No problem, dear. So tell me about yourself, Jasper has never brought anyone home." None of them did.
"Oh, um, I'm 16. I have Jasper in every class besides the last one that I have with Alice. I read a lot, draw a lot, listen to a lot of music. Oh, um, I live with my mom and grandma. We just moved her from LA."
Esme nodded. "Wow, you just turned 16, and you're a junior?" She nodded. Esme had a glint in her eyes.
"You're a very bright girl. I'm glad you and Jasper are together." Aurora's eyes darted to Jasper's.
"Oh, we're not together."
"Oh? And why not?"
She glanced up at Jasper, "I have no clue, Mrs. Esme, ask Jasper."
Esme and Carlisle laughed, and Jasper rolled his eyes. Aurora thanked them again for the food and gave them both a hug. "I hope you come back, dear."
Aurora nodded, not knowing what to say. Jasper took a car this time, a BMW. Fucking christ, Carlisle had to be a nepotism trust fund baby because fuck this house, cars, and motorcycles.
They drove in silence until Aurora spoke. "So, are you gonna go back to ignoring tomorrow?"
Jasper sighed, "Aurora, I want us to be close. I do. There's just some things I have to sort out."
Aurora nodded. He was lying. A small ,"Okay," was all she said.
They pulled up to Aurora's, Jasper was going to go open the door for her and walk her, but she got out before he did.
"Thank you for the ride and everything today." She shut the door and walked to her house, not sparing a glance back at him.
Jasper groaned. He was going to hunt for sure tonight. He waited until she was taking off her shoes before driving off.
Amora jumped up and all but ran to the door. She ushered her daughter inside. They sat down at the dining room table, Jacinda was outside smoking, she didn't want to hear Aurora's lecture.
"Aurora. I am going to ask you this once, okay? And you have to answer this honestly."
Aurora winced, "Did you drink?" Aurora looked at her hesitantly and nodded. Amora gave a sharp inhale.
"Is that why you and Bella fought?"
"Kind of."
"What's kind of Aurora?"
Aurora hesitantly spoke, "She left me with Jasper, I was tipsy, I shushed her off, and then she left with Jacob and his friends because he got sick, I think."
"And you fought about her leaving you with Jasper? When you were tipsy?"
"Okay," Amora breathed out, "I am disappointed that you drank Aurora. You're only 16. And I am a little disappointed at Bella for leaving you alone with Jasper when you were drunk. Why did you drink?"
"I don't know, honestly, Mama. They offered me a wine cooler, and I accepted. And I felt a little woozy, and then yeah."
"Was Jasper there the whole time?"
"No, we were walking around the woods by his house and heard us."
Amora didn't even want to ask the question, "Did he do anything?"
Aurora shook her head, "No, he didn't. He let me sleep in his bed while he went off and helped his mom."
Amora sighed in relief, "You were incredibly lucky Aurora, had it been someone else, this talk would be a lot different."
Aurora nodded. "Charlie caught wind from the parents on the reservation. He's already talked to Bella right now. I understand if you don't want to talk to her or, well, stay friends with her. But she does want to speak with you."
"I'll speak to her."
"Okay I'll tell Charlie and they'll come over. Go upstairs." Aurora nodded and went to her room.
About 10 minutes later, Bella knocked on the wood, "Hey."
"Hi."
"I'm sorry."
"Why are you apologizing?"
"I shouldn't have blown up on you li-."
"No Aurora you were right! I shouldn't have left you alone regardless of who it was. I am so sorry Aurora. It was a shitty thing to do and I am a bad friend." Bella had tears streaming down her face.
Aurora did as well. She hugged Bella with her right arm. "We make mistakes, I was lucky it was Jasper and that Jasper is a gentleman and whatnot."
Bella nodded,"But still, even if he's the most upstanding guy, I should've stayed just in case."
The girls hugged while Charlie and Amora could hear them faintly. "I'm sorry again, Amora. I don't-."
Amora shook her head, "Well, it isn't okay, Bella is still a teenager, and sometimes teenagers make the wrong choice. But Aurora isn't hurt, and neither is Bella."

Chapter 7: Secrets out
Mia sat down on the porch in front of everyone as the group pulled up chairs around her waiting for her to speak. Her hands twisting in her lap while she watched everyone get settled. Alex was still missing and Brady, Celeb and Colin were out as wolves checking the perimeter but everyone else seemed to be there waiting for her to tell her story. The idea was so strange to her, that the people she had been hanging out with for weeks just magically turned into wolves. Or some sort of genetic thing but Mia liked the idea of magic instead.
“Why don’t you explain now that we are all here.” Sam directed towards her; his arms crossed while his face remained calm. Paul reached over and held her hand while he stared at her also, everyone else’s attention turned solely on her. Her nerves were getting the better of her but at least Paul helped and wasn’t pulling away yet.
“The reason you guys have…smelt me? Or the vampire on me because Callie is a vampire. And she came to visit yesterday.” Mia started giving them some time to accept that information, Paul’s hand twitched in hers like he wanted to pull away from her but luckily he didn’t.
“We lived in a small town in New York before I came here. And there was a venue for parties and one of our friends had their sweet sixteen there. When it was over and Callie mom was running late, we told her we would met her at the gas station down the road. The town was super safe, Callie used to walk around all the time and never had any issues till then. We got a snack and sat over by some picnic tables and were waiting when this guy showed up. He was.. creepy. I was closest to him and Callie grabbed me and pushed me behind her and he for some reason became amused by her doing that. He was talking about wanting her to join him and of course we didn’t know what that meant at the time.” Paul’s hand tightened his grip on her hand, squeezing it a little too tightly as the rest of the group let out small gasp but remained silent to listen to her story.
“He moved so fast.. the next second she was on the ground screaming. I.. I didn’t know what was happening and then he was just gone. And then I saw her mom and she just stopped acting like she was in pain. So I thought she was fine but when we got back to her house… She didn’t want her mom to know what had happened and nothing seemed wrong, so I just went with it. I thought everything was okay.” Mia could remember how scared she was, she spent the day wondering if she should tell Callie’s mom but she begged her not to. She knew that something was going on with Callie the next day she stayed in bed, barely moving. But she wasn’t screaming and Mia wondered if maybe she had just made the man up or it was just some dream. Maybe Callie was just sick. Anything to try explain the strangeness they went though.
“Callie changed. She got prettier and colder. After the weekend was up she finally opened her eyes and they were this bright red like the mans. I don’t know what happened but she moved fast when she threw me against the wall, she went to bite me. I know that now the smelled my blood and I think she realized what she was going to do. So she stopped and just flung herself back onto the bed and sat there for half an hour. When she opened her eyes, she was so terrified. We didn’t know what was going on and she didn’t try to bite me again so we let it go? We went out that day and tried to find the man, Callie didn’t want to me to go with her but I wasn’t leaving her alone. And as you guys know.. Callie glittered in the sunlight so we had to wait till night but we found him. He looked so… proud. He said what a good job he did. He explained everything and said that they could share me.” Mia shuttered at the memory; Paul’s hand tightened around hers as he glared at the nonexistent man. Quickly kissing his knuckles as she gave him a small smile to let him know it was okay. It was the most comfort she could give him when trying to finish the story without freaking out.
“She pulled us away after he said that and it confused him. He explained how she shouldn’t have been able to stand near me. He expected her to kill me as her first meal. He went to attack and she… Well she ripped him apart. Turns out they don’t die that way. After she ripped him apart we buried the pieces. Well she did but still. We thought it was fine and just kinda freaked out together. Two days later I was getting ready to go home and he appeared at her living room window fully intact. They fought again and part of him fell into the fireplace. So after she finished him off, we got all the pieces and burned him.” Mia told them, that was a memory she could never forget. Callie looked like she was sobbing but no tears would come out, her body shook while they tried to put the house back together, luckily most of the fighting was done in the backyard. Once everything was done Callie and Mia just sat on the living room couch both crying until her mom came to pick her up a blamed it on some movie they watched.
“That’s why I said she wasn’t a threat because we realized little bit later that she could get rid of senses. It was what she did when she went to attack me. She has been able to redo it since, every couples month she has to but it last longer now. She makes sure the desire doesn’t ever come back and just drinks rejected blood.”
Mia stared at everyone when she finished her story, waiting for someone to respond but they all seemed to be thinking it over everything she had told them. She knew it had to be a lot to take in, sure supernatural was normal to them but from this random person dating their friend she doubted anyone would expect that. Specially from what Callie and Mia found out they weren’t very common. What were the chances.
“Why doesn’t she smell like the others? You can tell you were around one but it’s off. Normal ones smell sweet and burns our nose. She’s just a mild inconvenience type of way.” Jared said leaning forward on his knees while he stared at her.
“I don’t know. I never heard anything about the smell and I don’t notice it.” Mia said shrugging, Callie smelled the same as anyone else she didn’t notice any difference. She didn’t even think there was a change between human Callie and vampire Callie.
“I would like to meet her then. See how well this resist to blood is. But we don’t usually allow vampires onto our land.” Sam spoke up towards her unsure how to go about this new information.
“Oh! She would love to meet you.” Mia chuckled. She could imagine Callie excitement meeting actually werewolves, lots of dog jokes. “I was in a car accident after she changed and there was a lot of blood. Callie was the one that found me and she was fine. Pulled me out and saved me. And she wears contacts now. They are brown which is odd but they hide the red well. She’s really not a threat but if needed I can move out of your area. From the stories you guys don’t get along.” Mia told them, biting her lower lip while she looked around. She didn’t want to leave all of them but she was friends with Callie and one of the last remaining two friends she had from before. She couldn’t just leave her.
“You are not moving further away already. We have so little time left with you around here as it is.” Paul said rolling his eyes unsure how he felt about everything but he knew that she couldn’t just leave. They would have to make something work without losing her.
“You normally would be the one fighting to get her away from them and all of sudden you are okay with it?” Quil turned to Paul. Paul let out a sort of growl as he glared at the younger boy.
“If she trusts her, I give her some trust. Sam will check her out and so will I.” Paul growled out towards him. Mia eyes widened slightly at the dark tone of his voice; she had never heard Paul sound so scary.
“I’m just saying. You hated vampires more than most of us and now you are just all okay with a random one. You barely tolerated the Cullens.” Quil pointed out, his arms crossed while he stared at Paul. Mia didn’t know who the Cullens were but something must have happened with them, she would have to ask about it later.
“Times have changed. And I’m not just for it. I don’t have much control over it and if Mia telling the truth then she isn’t a danger. Even less then the Cullens and you got along with them just fine.” Paul said rolling his eyes.
Mia shook her head at them trying to defuse the tension. “You know nothing you will say will change my mind but you guys have the right to decide obviously.”
The group were still giving her mixed reactions, some chuckled and others were glaring at her. It was making her uncomfortable. She didn’t want the group to be mad at her but she also didn’t want to lose Callie over this. She sort of already planned around Paul in her life and she didn’t really think it would all fall apart so soon.
“Are we done?” Paul questioned, looking at Sam for an answer. Sam nodded his head saying for now. Paul got up and his hand still wrapped around hers pulled her up with Mia following him through the path that led to the beach. Neither said anything to each other while Mia focused on the uneven ground, with Paul helping her out. When they got to the beach it was empty. It was still too early in the morning and it looked like it was going to rain for people to show up. The sky was covered in dark gray clouds, through the hoodie she felt the breeze cause a shiver through her.
“If it wasn’t for me, back then you would be on the side to kill her?” Mia spoke up first keeping her eyes on her feet unable to look up at him unsure how she felt about it.
“Yeah, I would have been.” Paul told her honestly.
“Why would you be on my side now?” Mia wondered, if he believed in it then why would he change his mind now just for her.
“Because I’m falling in love with you. And you don’t seem like you would risk your life for someone that’s dangerous. I can’t promise I’ll agree completely but I can give it a shot for you at the least.”
“And if that puts you at odds with your family though… I don’t want to be the cause of that.” Mia expressed shaking her head, Paul had such a wonderful life with everyone around him. She wished she could have what he had, sure she had Callie and some other friends and family but most were conditional. Paul didn’t have that. They all loved each other and would stand by each other if needed. She couldn’t come between that.
“You won’t be. They’ll understand where I’m coming from.”
“How?” Mia questioned raising an eyebrow at him but Paul looked uncomfortable at the question. Paul stopped walking a little further up and sat down on a large piece of driftwood. Running his hand through his hair, shaking his head while he looked up at Mia.
“Theres something else. It’s part of the wolf thing, I didn’t think I would have to tell you so soon but I feel like you need to know.” Paul told her sighing as watched the waves crash over the shoreline. Mia looked at him quizzly but stayed silent while she waited for him to find the words to explain whatever he needed to.
“Theres this thing.. After you turn, it supposed to be rare but were not so sure about that. It happens way too much. But when you meet a person and they are basically your soulmate, the wolves have a way to just let you know. But it becomes more than that. It’s a love at first but so much more. Your whole live changes, the universe doesn’t hold you to it but the person does. Being whoever your person needs is who you become. We call it imprinting.” Paul explained to Mia.
Mia stood in silence, her eyes watching the waves soak the sand while her eyes burned. She knew it was too good to be true. She knew Paul was too good be true. “You are forced to want to be with me.” Mia spoke up after a bit her voice cracking while she tried to push back the tears. “It’s not you it’s just some sort of magic or science or whatever.”
“No!” Paul yelled jumping from up from the log, taking Mia face in his hands gently forcing her to look up at him. His thumbs wiping away the tears that slipped down her face. “No.” He said more calmly. “It points us in the right direction. Life is messy and it’s so easy to just let people slip out of it, it’s just a helpful thing to direct you. I think if I wasn’t a wolf and I met you, we would connect, of course, but it wouldn’t be the same. You would travel back to New York and I would be here. Never giving us a chance to figure out how much we care for each other but it just stopped that. Just a jump start at a connection.” Paul tried to explain to her how he saw the imprinting, he was never sure if he wanted to imprint it was a mixed thing. No one seemed unhappy being imprinted but he was happy that it made it so Mia stayed with him instead of going home so fast. He would never know how much he cared for her.
“So the feelings.. they are real?” Mia asked softly trying to stop the tears.
“Yes, yes very real. It’s not like our relationship is going to be perfect and nothing goes wrong. We’ll fight and get on each other nerves. I will defiantly get on yours all the time. And I didn’t love you right away that just comes with knowing what an amazing person you are.”
“But they said how you changed? I don’t want to change you or for you to be less... you just because of me.”
“Didn’t you change while growing up? If we had met a few years ago, I don’t think anything you could have said would have changed my mind. But we have been through some things, I can explain some another time but I’m not the angry hot head that I once was.. well as much.” Paul smirked at her. “Not everything is the same and the world isn’t good guys and bad guys. I would rather have no vampires that is pretty much true but some are decent. And you said she doesn’t have the desire to kill which is also a huge help. I’m not saying I’m completely cool with it but I can’t control you.” Paul said taking her hands in his pulling her close to him as Mia still looked worryingly into his eyes.
“I’m here because I want too. If this is too much and you want to leave, I understand that too.” Paul told her wanting to make sure she had an out. But Mia didn’t need one, the world of magic was nothing new to her and what was one more magical creature in her life. Wasn’t it a reader’s dream to fall into the world in the books you read. And here she was living in that world. Vampires and werewolves and falling for a man who loves her and living out all her dreams. Mia had a hard time being anything but happy right now.
Reaching up she placed both hands on the side of Paul’s face pulling him towards her to kiss him, she could feel the physical release of Paul’s body when she did as he wrapped his arms around her waist. Mia didn’t know how long they stood on the beach but the cold raindrops cut them off. Wrapping her hand into Paul’s as they ran back to Sam’s and Emily’s house to try getting out of the rain.
But when they showed up they were soaked, their clothes dripping over the covered porch as they laughed looking at each other. Mia opened up the front door but made sure to stay outside not wanting to soak Emily’s floors. Quil, Sam and Embry were sitting at the small dining room table talking over what Mia told them. She was embarrassed but she figured she would be a topic of conversation for a little bit at least.
“Erm.. Can I have my keys? I would get it but bit wet.” Mia said gesturing to her dripping clothes.
Quil got up from his spot to hand her the keys from where she had left on the counter closet to him.
“I want to say sorry. I shouldn’t have said what I said.” Quil told her and looking over her shoulder at Paul mainly but gave her a small embarrassed smile.
“Don’t worry about it. I get it.” Paul said forgiving him already, he understood where Quil was coming from, even if it pissed him off when he said it Quil was only pointing it out.
Quill face broke out in a huge smile, removing any sort of tension left behind. “So I take it you guys are good? No freak out?” He asked looking back at Mia who just shook her head at Quil.
“Not today.”
“Good. Paul would not be fun if you did. Though you did have a cheat to the freaky.”
“Don’t make me regret forgiving you.” Paul growled in a joking tone at him, Mia just rolled her eyes at the two of them.
“Well I’m going to the hotel to get dry clothes since day plans changed. Paul wanna come watch a movie? I think I have your bag in my car with clothes in it too.” Mia said turning back to Paul slightly shivering as a gust a wind blew across the yard. She needed to get out of these clothes before she ended up sick.
“Sounds great. Bye guys!” Paul yelled slightly into the house but Paul and Mia ran towards her car in the rain trying to climb in as fast as possible before they answered back. Mia quickly turned the car on and blasted the heat causing Paul to groan but still sat close to Mia to warm her up.
Mia was quiet on the way to the hotel, just going over everything Paul had told her today. It wasn’t everyday your boyfriend tells you he can turn into a giant wolf and all of his friends do too. Mia wondered what other creatures were actually real and people just didn’t know about them.
“Are you really okay with it?” Paul questioned nervous when they pulled into the parking lot, Mia was able to look at him giving him a small comforting smile.
“I have a vampire best friend. Who only by chance doesn’t kill. This is nothing. You are simply more special now. Now let’s get soaked again. Don’t forget your bag!” She called out before flinging open the door and quickly running to her hotel door with Paul trailing after her.
Paul quickly ran to the bathroom when they entered as Mia stayed in the main room to get out of the clothes. Once she was dressed in a pair of leggings and a hoodie Paul brought over last time he was here for a movie night, which she was pretty sure he brought over for her to keep since he never seemed to need it… which was probably a wolf thing now that she thought about it. But she made her way over to the closed bathroom door giving it a small knock.
“All clear!” She called out to him giving him a grin when Paul made his way out of the bathroom in a pair of shorts and a tank top. Mia jumped on the bed as Paul curled up next to her, causally throwing his arm over her shoulder and kissing her temple.
Flicking through Netflix to find some sort of movie to watch, when Mia grinned at Paul and turned on the Teen Wolf movie. Paul just groaned at her and pulled her back against himself giving her a grin. “Sooo what are wolf things? Clearly turning into wolves and super smell.” Mia questioned him not really paying attention to the movie.
“We are fast. Faster than blood suckers. Sorry” Paul said at Mia wince at the word. “Vampires. We have really good hearing and eyesight. We stop aging while we are changing. So when we first start the process we age to where we are now and just kind of hit pause for a while.”
“You don’t age?! Why does no one in my life age but me! I mean sure I don’t want to be a teen forever but jez.” Mia said rolling her eyes at another person in her life just frozen in time, she almost felt bad for them unable to fully live a life normally.
“I’m sorry.” Paul said laughing. “I will age with you. I just need to stop becoming a wolf and I’m not sure I’m ready for that yet.”
“Understandable. So this super warm thing, werewolf?” Mia said running her hand down Paul’s arm feeling the heat radiate off of him.
“Yupp.” Paul confirmed intertwining their hands together and kissing her knuckles softly. “I don’t understand that part. It’s just a thing that happens.”
“Odd. What else?” Mia questioned, looking up at Paul wanting to know everything about him. Mia was fascinated just as she was when they figured out Callie was a vampire. The two spent hours researching and testing the limits of what Callie could do.
“We heal faster, skin is tougher both to fight vampires. Oh! When we are in wolf form we can hear each other’s thoughts. Every little one, even the ones we don’t want to.” Paull added on like it was no big deal.
Mia raised an eyebrow at the idea of someone in her head, she would hate everyone hearing the strange thoughts that pop in but it would explain why everyone is so close. They had no choice but to be. It was a good thing they all got along or it seems like it would be awful thing to deal with.
“Sounds..I dunno. I’m not sure I would like that.” Mia told him.
“It has good and bad. You learn to somewhat control your thoughts. Kind of embarrassing when you are remembering kissing a pretty girl and everyone sees it.” Paul chuckled shaking his head.
“How many pretty girls did you kiss before?” Mia asked teasingly.
“Hmmm none as pretty as you precious. And I rather not share my memories of you to them. I want to keep them and you all to myself.” Paul said running his large hand up her arm and placed a hand on her cheek tilting her face up so he could kiss her. Mia rolled her eyes at the response but gladly reacted to Paul.
Mia smiled into the kiss pulling her body close to his as possible, Paul’s hand gripping her sides as she deepened the kiss, throwing her leg over Paul’s so she could straddle him. She could feel Paul’s heat surround her as his mouth moved down to Mia’s neck as she let out a soft moan. They found themselves in this position quite a bit in the last couple weeks but something seemed different. Maybe it was because there were no more secrets between them or maybe it was just the act of getting to know Paul but she wanted more. She wanted him. Taking a deep breath, she pulled back from Paul slightly, grabbing the of the bottom of the hoodie she pulled it off her feeling the cold air against her skin.
Smiling as Paul’s eyes roamed over her body, taking encouragement from it she leaned back forward to kiss him once again, his hands running up her back playing with the back of her bra.
“Go ahead.” She whispered, feeling her cheeks turn a bright shade of red but tried to appear confident. Yes, she was sure she wanted Paul but it didn’t help her awkwardness or shyness any. But Paul loved her and she loved him, she just needed to focus on that and maybe his lips trailing across her chest. It was a good distraction to get out of her own head.
“You sure you want to?” Paul asked seriously, pausing his movement to make sure Mia was fully looking at him and paying attention.
“I’m sure.” Mia confirmed, giving him a smile letting Paul take over control.

Victoria Tries Killing Me With a Soccer Ball
Warnings: None
Copyright: I do not own any Twilight characters or locations. I do own Davina Mikelson and Marcel. I also own the backstory for my OC. I do not condone any copying of this.
Davina P.O.V.
It's been about a week since we got back from Kentucky and both sides of the field- Vampire and Werewolf- was filled in about everything on the trip.
I was preparing for a date tonight with Carlisle. Alice had dropped yet another dress off at the house for me to wear. Honestly, it was starting to get ridiculous. My closet was more full of Alice, Rosalie, and Esmes' left over things than my own.
The dress was Jade green- the best colour on me- and had almost no sleeves and a very swishy skirt. I wore silver jewelry, held a silver purse, and wore silver heels with this outfit. Not to mention after I finished curling my hair, I put in silver pins to hold some of it up. Pearl earrings though.
I was nervous because Alice seemed so overly excited for this date which made me wonder what was going to happen.
Probably nothing.
She was probably just glad that Carlisle and I were going out on a date. We hadn't been on one since we'd gotten back from Italy.
Carlisle showed up, wearing a tight sweater with a white shirt underneath and a tie. He was always wearing ties. He reminded me of Elijah Mikelson sometimes- just without the three piece suits.
Which reminded me! We had binged watched Vampire Diaries ever since I had gotten back from Kentucky. The guys watched it in interest, mostly to see what us girls liked about it. Bella watched some of it, but it wasn't really her thing.
However Esme, Alice, Rosalie, and I couldn't get enough of it.
We knew the guys got easily jealous and were comparing the guys in the TV show to the guys in real life and saying who we'd rather date. Carlisle especially hated it whenever I fawned over Damon Salvatore- probably because Carlisle was blond and was starting to wonder (according to Edward) if he was even my type.
It was quite fun.
Of course, even if Damon Salvatore existed. . . okay so maybe I'd have to have both Damon and Carlisle but that wasn't really a problem, was it?
Oh well.
I headed down the stairs, making sure the lights and stove were turned off before I answered the knock at the door.
"Hey." I said happily, letting Carlisle scoop me up and zoom to the car. It was raining and vampire speed was far more effective than an umbrella.
Carlisle sild into the other seat.
I stared at him, wild ideas swimming through my head and he glanced over. "What?"
"Just thinking." I said with a small smile.
"About what?"
"If you can drive and cuddle at the same time." I admitted, flushing slightly.
He chuckled lowly. "Vampires can multitask."
And in a flash, I was sitting on his lap, my face, facing towards him as he drove, one hand on the wheel, the other around my waist. I rested my forehead on his shoulder so that he could still see the road.
I snuggled into him, feeling his cool, but strong arm around me. "I love you Carlisle. I love you so much."
He pretty much purred into my ear, "I love you too Davina."
After a few minutes of content silence I whispered, "I think I understand why I was so at home with the wolf pack now. It's because I should be one of them."
"I'm glad you're not though." Carlisle said softly. "It would very hard to be together. Not because I wouldn't like you for being a werewolf, but it's very hard for a werewolf and a vampire to be in the same room together."
"I know." I whispered. "I'm glad I've never transformed either. Although now I'm afraid that I might either not be able to become a vampire at all, or I'll have to become a vampire sooner than I wished so that I don't turn into a wolf."
"I'll keep you happy enough that you won't be angry enough to turn." Carlisle kissed my cheek, slowing down. "We're here."
He pulled into a parking space and I saw the fancy restaurant in front of us.
"Don't worry." Carlisle murmured, running his lips from my ear, down my jaw, to my neck and up again. "Just dessert. Nothing else."
I giggled. "Am I dessert?"
Carlisle's eyes flashed black before turning gold again. "You could be. . . if we don't hurry."
He licked slowly up my neck with the tip of his tongue, making me giggle again and shiver. I pressed my lips to his in fervor. I felt his tongue swipe across the bottom of my lip and opened my mouth slightly, allowing his tongue to enter my mouth, swirling around, colliding with my tongue, fighting for dominance that I knew he would win anyways.
I pulled away slowly, breathing for air. "Dessert. Sounds good."
Carlisle chuckled lowly, pecking my lips before pulling the keys out of the ignition, and opening the door. I climbed out of the car, fixing my dress as he stepped out as well, slamming the door shut, and locking the car.
He held out his hand which I took. The rain had stopped, the clouds swirling above us.
"What's the last name?" The hostess asked promptly without any gawking at Carlisle which was a first.
"Cullen." Carlisle replied.
She looked at the computer, tapped the screen a few times, gathered up two menus, and said, "Right this way."
"All business, I like her." I muttered under my breath for only him to hear.
He chuckled lightly as we followed her through the quiet, romantic restaurant. He squeezed my hand as we got a table in the back which was very close to being empty.
He slid into the seat with his back to the wall, while I slid in the seat across from him, facing the wall.
"I already ordered, just so you know." Carlisle said softly, reaching across the table to take my hand. "I know what you like."
I smiled gently, slipping my heels off, placing my feet on his legs, out straight, one foot on each leg.
"You're very touchy tonight." Carlisle said with a smirk, but also honest curiosity in his voice, "Is anything wrong?"
"No." I said, shrugging, running my thumb over his knuckles. His skin was so smooth. "I just. . . I want to be as close to you as I can get."
The waitress came out a few moments later with the dessert, setting it down in front of us. I smiled down at it as she walked away. "You do really know me." I admitted.
The Hot fudge cake looked so appetizing. The large dollop of whip cream on top of the large chocolate brownie and vanilla ice-cream sandwich. The cherry leaked juices, penetrating into the whip cream, dying it a red and probably tainting the taste. Chocolate sauce leaked over the edges of the cake, pooling on the plate.
[I'm honestly craving these now that I'm writing about. Someone help!]
"It does look good." Carlisle admitted.
I picked up the spoon, carving into the dessert, popping a piece in my mouth and closing my eyes, nearly moaning at the decadent tastes that melted in my mouth. "Carlisle, this is so good. Thank you."
He chuckled, squeezing the hand that wasn't holding the spoon.
I opened my eyes. His gold eyes seemed brighter, a new emotion I'd never seen behind them. "Say. If you added blood to food, would it taste like anything?"
Carlisle thought about it. "I have no idea."
"Hmm," I thought about it. "I mean, maybe not normal solid foods. But like. . . I don't know. Adding blood to a chocolate smoothie or something. I don't know if it would work. I should experiment later with that."
He chuckled, "Making sure you can get your chocolate after you're a vampire?"
"Exactly." I winked at him.
I finished off the dessert rather slowly. For one thing, I didn't want to look like a slob eating it. For another, I wanted this date to last as long as possible.
"Davina. . ." Carlisle said softly as I finally put the spoon down and dabbed my mouth with a napkin.
I looked at him, wondering what he was thinking about. He stood up and I was going to get to my feet before he got down on one knee, pulling a box out from his pocket.
Oh.
"Davina," Carlisle's golden eyes were burning. I was frozen in my seat, my heart beating harder than I could've thought possible without bursting out of my chest. "I fell in love with you the moment I laid eyes on you. I fell in love with your beautiful onyx eyes and your quirky personality. The way that quotes just roll off your tongue, even if I don't completely understand where they come from. I love the way that you know exactly what to say when I feel down to make me feel better. Your touch makes me feel alive in ways I haven't in nearly three hundred years. I will never love anyone the way I love you. I need you in my life. So, Davina Hermione Michaelson. . . Will you Marry me?"
So many emotions were conflicting in my chest as I stared at Carlisle. Azim's face popped up, the first person that I thought I would marry. But Carlisle wasn't like that. Carlisle was different. Carlisle was my soulmate.
I swallowed. "Yes."
Carlisle carefully took the ring out of the box. It was rather large and definitely old fashioned and he looked at me, slightly apologetic. "I know it's not. . . in the fashion. It was my mothers."
I was getting a ring from the 1640s? Wow.
"That's alright." I whispered. "It's not the ring I care about you know."
He smiled as he slid the ring onto my left hand ring finger. It had a simple gold band with an intricate. . . almost flower like design with a large diamond in the center. Smaller diamonds circled around the large one.
"It's beautiful." I murmured. "I love you Carlisle."
"I love you too." Carlisle murmured, bending down to kiss me. I leaned into the kiss eagerly. The ring rested easily on my hand. "I suppose I should've asked Sam for permission first though."
I chuckled, "He's my brother, not my father."
Carlisle nodded a little. "Ready to go home?"
"Yes." I said softly, standing, taking his arm and we went home.
------------------
"Stay in La Push today." Carlisle warned.
"I know." I said sincerely.
Alice had foreseen that Victoria would be coming back today. Edward and Bella were in Florida at the moment. Edward had wanted to get Bella out of Forks when she came. Meanwhile, the others would be hunting Victoria. Alice knew exactly where she was going to be.
"Please stay safe." I said, kissing Carlisle fiercely. He wrapped his arms around me tightly.
"Carlisle, we have to go." Alice said. "We have twenty minutes."
"I'm going." I murmured, hurrying from the house, climbing on to the motorcycle, and taking off for La Push. I arrived there in under ten minutes, pulling up to Harry's house. Seth was already waiting for me with his soccer ball.
"Hey Mom!" Seth said happily as I climbed off the motorcycle. "Are you ready to see my wicked moves?"
"Of course." I grinned. "But we should stay along the treaty line."
I had already called Sam and let him know that Victoria was going to be here. Seth wasn't allowed to participate which was slightly annoying to him.
"Come on buddy." I said, ruffling his hair.
We headed into the forest, laughing. We were going to head to the creek and stand on either side and make ridiculous throws at each other for the other to catch. It was going to be fun. Alice hadn't seen any problems, so there shouldn't be any.
We arrived at the stream and there were no problems. The water was rushing past quickly though. "You gotta be on the other side." Seth said. "You know, treaty line and all."
I giggled, "Sure thing werewolf boy."
I walked evenly across one of the logs, making it to the other side of the river. The water wasn't too deep, maybe six feet. Swimmable, but not drownable.
"Alright Seth! Let's see what you can do." I said with a grin.
Carlisle P.O.V.
We waited, still and silent, in the place that Alice had said Victoria would come to. Alice was in front, Jasper closest to her on her right with me on the outside of Jasper. On the left side of Alice was Esme, Rosalie, and Emmett.
I tugged the sleeves of my navy blue sweatshirt up slightly.
Alice was staring out into the woods while we checked the surrounding area. I was nervous- not for myself and only a little bit for my family- but say Victoria crossed the treaty line. . . would the wolves be able to protect Davina?
I liked to think so, especially after they'd discovered about Sam, Davina, and. . . Embry being connected by the same father.
"Are you sure this is where you saw her?" I asked Alice.
Jasper stepped closer to Alice who said, "She's almost here."
Everything stayed silent. I didn't even hear any animals, much less a vampire rushing through. But we were counting on Alice for that part if we didn't catch it.
"On your left!" Alice shouted.
I turned, running as fast as I could towards my left. This was near the werewolf territory, near the treaty line. That was most definitely worrisome.
I was gaining on Victoria, but Emmett got closest. He reached out for her, not breaking speed, grabbing down on her shoulder until she flipped him over it and he crashed into the nearest tree, tumbling to the ground.
I sped up, trying to gain on her. I had to kill her- Lord and I both agreed on that- for Davina's sake. And for Bella's too.
And then, we neared the treaty line and she jumped, landing on the wolves territory. We skidded to a stop. "Wait. She's on their territory now." I said, holding out my arm. I knew she wouldn't go in deep, and we could track her from across our border.
And then the worst thing imaginable happened. A voice- a human one- was carried upstream.
"Wow Seth! That was a good one!"
It was Davina's voice.
Victoria's head snapped up, lips curling back into a grin, and she took off running. We ran parallel to her and I had to hope that Davina was on our side of the treaty line or else I was going to break the treaty.
"She'll get away!" Esme shouted.
And that was when two wolves hopped down. They were the larger ones, the older ones and I knew they cared about Davina greatly.
"NO SHE WON'T!" Jasper and Lord roared together.
We didn't see Davina or the boy she was hanging out with for a long time. She jumped back to our side, far ahead of us, to avoid the wolves snapping at her feet. That was when the soccer ball came out of nowhere, almost hitting Victoria in the face.
Victoria snatched it out of the air- I couldn't see her face.
"SETH LOOK OUT!" Davina screamed and then I saw her go flying through the air, the soccer ball to her stomach. I leaped, away from Victoria and everyone, as Davina plunged into the water, after her.
Davina P.O.V.
Seth had kicked the ball high and I laughed as it disappeared into the forest.
"Well damn," Seth said, crossing over to my side. I gave him a warning look which he ignored. "We're going to have to-"
And then he froze, "Vampire."
"Well, duh." I chuckled, ruffling his fur. "The Cullens-"
And then the redheaded blur came towards us, holding our soccer ball tightly in her hands. She flung it with vampire speed.
"SETH LOOK OUT!" I screamed, pushing Seth into the trees, catching the soccer ball in my chest.
The breath was knocked out of me, and the force that the soccer ball hit me in the stomach sent me flying off my feet. I had definitely broken a rib or two. I flailed around before I hit the water.
The cold water shocked my body, making me inhale the water, I tried coughing, but as I was underwater, all I did was succeed in getting more water into my lungs. I thrashed around, trying to break surface, panicking.
Something else hit the water, I could hear it. Something else had entered the water. Something smooth so it definitely wasn't a werewolf.
Victoria.
Of course, I doubted Carlisle would let her get close to me. I hadn't thought there would be a problem along the treaty line? Especially not out here. . . but maybe out here was exactly where a problem would have been.
My vision started to go black and fuzzy as two hard arms pulled me closer to their body, erupting out of the water. I tried to inhale the air, but I couldn't.
I was flung onto the rocky ground, hard hands pressing against my chest, hard lips on mine, trying to get me to breathe.
"Come on Davina." Carlisle begged.
"Mom!" Seth's voice was frantic and I felt a warm hand on my arm.
"What happened?" Sam's voice roared across the river.
I could hear growling from a wolf and Emmett. "Paul, back down." Sam ordered.
"Emmett, come back here." Alice's voice said, laced with worry.
Had Emmett tried getting across the treaty line? Where was Victoria?
Water trickled from my mouth and I gasped, starting to cough. I spit the water out of my mouth, sitting up.
"Ow." I said, gingerly putting a hand to my stomach.
"You've got a broken rib." Carlisle said, his golden eyes laced with worry but also professionalism. "We can get you back to the house and I'll wrap it up."
"Are you okay?" Seth asked, his eyes round with worry, shaking but only slightly.
I reached out, ruffling his hair. "I'm alright. You okay?"
"Perfectly fine. I could've taken her."
I chuckled, "I'm sure you could've. Speaking of which, is she dead?"
I looked from my vampire family, to Sam, Jared, Paul, and Embry.
"Well. . . no." Carlisle said, looking between the wolves- specifically Paul- and Emmett.
I got to my feet gingerly. "What do you mean no?"
Carlisle sighed, "Emmett tried leaping the boundary line to go after her. One of the wolves stopped him. The two of them bickered instead of going after her. She's gone."
"It's not my fault." Emmett muttered.
I stood there for a second, looking from Emmett to Paul, and then I said angrily, "Are you kidding me?"
All the vampires quickly backed away from me and I knew why. If I got angry, there was a chance I transformed, and none of them wanted to be to close when I did that. Seth on the other hand, stepped closer, and Carlisle wouldn't step to far away from me.
I turned to Paul, "Emmett wouldn't have magically turned from hunting Victoria to hunting La Push residents! And you-" I turned to Emmett and gave him an annoyed look, "-you knew where the treaty line was. You shouldn't have tried crossing the river."
"Sorry Mama bear." Emmett muttered.
"Sorry mom." Paul muttered.
I sighed, turning to Alice. My anger was completely burnt out and Carlisle wrapped his arms around me loosely, not wanting to hurt me, "When is the next chance she's coming back?"
Alice made that head movement like 'I don't know.'
I sighed, "Alright, Carlisle, take me home."
I didn't even get to say good-bye to the other wolves as Carlisle was already running through the forest back towards the house.
He yanked the door open, bringing me to his study, settling me down on the long, soft couch he had in here.
"Well today was very fun." I muttered, trying to sit up, but he kept a hand on my upper chest, forcing to me to continue to lay back.
He pushed my shirt up so that only my stomach was exposed. He grabbed the bandages, feeling deftly along my ribs, noting when I winced.
"It's just the lower one." He sighed, finally allowing me to sit up so that he could wrap it tightly. When he was done, he sat down on the couch and carefully pulled me onto his lap, my back flush against him. "That. . . don't do that to me ever again."
I chuckled, "Don't worry. I don't plan on being near Victoria ever again. I hadn't planned on it today either."
He shuddered, holding me closer. "I should've sent you to Florida with Bella and Edward."
I snuggled into his chest, ignoring the pain in my ribs. "No thanks. I'd rather be here with you."
He sighed, "Me too."
I turned around completely so I was facing him. He lowered his head slightly, bringing our lips together. I wrapped my arms around Carlisle head while he wrapped his under my shoulder blades, pulling me closer.
My fingers delved in his hair, ruining is normal wavy hairstyle, and when we broke away from the kiss- so I could breathe- I ruffled his hair to make it messy. He grumbled lightly, but didn't try to fix it.
I chuckled lightly.
"Do I look like that Elijah guy now?" He asked, raising his eyebrows which made me giggle.
"Maybe a little. But you know I love you the best." I said, holding his stone cold yet smooth face in my hands. "Oh, and you should know that Alice plans on having us married in two weeks."
Carlisle sighed, "If only it could be sooner."
I chuckled. "If only."
"You're letting Alice plan the whole wedding?"
I was silent for a moment. "I told her to invite only people in Forks. I think Marcel likes me and I don't want to hurt him. I definitely don't want to invite Joshua. And I told her that every wolf was invited along with the council elders. Oh and that you could invite the Denali clan if she wanted. And. . . I told her to send an invitation to the Volturi so they knew. I thought that might stop them from coming."
"I see." Carlisle said, his arms tightening just slightly. "You should invite Marcel. Jasper read his emotions and doesn't believe he read any emotions of lust or love. Not that kind of love anyways, though he cares for you like a little sister."
"Well that's good. I'll let Alice know." I murmured.
"Are you staying the night?" Carlisle murmured, brushing black curls back from my face.
I smiled up at him, "Sure. Why not?"
He leaned down to kiss me again.

𝚜𝚠𝚎𝚎𝚝 𝚊𝚜 𝚑𝚘𝚗𝚎𝚢 | 𝚎.𝚌𝚊𝚕𝚕 | 𝚌𝚑𝚊𝚙𝚝𝚎𝚛 𝚎𝚒𝚐𝚑𝚝
Pairing: Embry Call x Original Character Summary: Join Ainsley and Embry as they embark on a journey where they are forced to question everything they thought they knew, and embrace the pain that is inevitable to avoid in love. An imprint story. Self-discovery. Angst and romance. Word Count: 4.7k Warnings: NSFW - mentions of prior sexual assault, mentions of prior ingestion of date rape prev. chapter | next chapter
The sun broke through the curtains, pulling me from my slumber. Embry left the window open throughout the night, making the air within our shared room frosty and bitter; I sunk deeper into the mattress and pulled the thick duvet under my chin. My eyes strained against the light, and I gave a sort of whining noise as I stretched my legs, entire body aching with the movements. A pair of warm arms tightened around my waist and Embry’s nose pressed into my neck as he hugged me closer to his half-asleep frame.
My eyes watched the gentle fall of the snowflakes, a small smile breaking across my lips as I gingerly ran my hand along the arm that held me. “Look, babe. It’s snowing.” I whispered quietly; the gentle lift of his chin was followed by a slight hum, then a lingering kiss was pressed to my jaw. It was mornings like these that I wanted to freeze in time forever. Wanted to remain in bed all day with Embry and his warm embrace. “I have to get up.” I lamented, my breath faltering into a laugh as Embry groaned in reluctance.
I spent several minutes trying to coax him into letting me go – it ended with multiple kisses and disapproving mumbles. I had an early shift at the diner, and needed to give myself ample time to get to Forks so that I wasn’t late. I rushed through my shower, slipping on two pairs of socks to keep the cold tiles from bothering my feet. Once I was satisfied with my hair and no longer looked lifeless, I returned to the cold bedroom to see Embry’s frame spread across the bed frame. He laid on his stomach, hugging his arms around the pillow his head was resting on. The bed was a King, and still, he almost looked too big – as though he were sleeping on a double.
I pressed my cold lips to his back, evading his desperate fingers as they searched blindly for me. “I’ll see you at Emily’s tonight – I promised her we’d help out.”
“Your keys are in the ignition.” Embry grunted in response.
I expected the Jeep to be buried under a mountain of snow, but instead it sat in the driveway cleared. Embry must have slipped out while I was showering to clear it off for me - and had even started the heat inside. I shivered in the warmth of the vehicle, thanking all the Gods for my boyfriend before I pulled the car into drive and sped off down the road towards the highway out of town.
It took me an extra twenty minutes to get through the snow banks; the plows hadn’t come through the reservation yet but I was certain the drive home would be less daunting. I parked behind the diner, rushing through the backdoor. I was shrugging out of my jacket just as the clock ticked to 7:00 AM.
“Mornin’ chickie!” Debbie chirped from the front counter, her red hair curled uniformly away from her face.
“Morning.” I smiled, kicking my boots off at the door to pull my sneakers on. “Where’s Angie?”
Speak of the devil, and the devil shall appear. The short-haired girl rounded the corner, supporting the tray with her hip. I could tell Angie had recently buzzed the undercut, leaving the three inches up top to grow out a little more. I smiled wider, catching the cloth that was tossed in my direction.
“Hey, nugget.”
“How’s the rush?” I asked.
“Not much of a rush,” Angie sighed, sorting the dishes off her tray. “Damn snow.”
I bumped her hip, rolling the sleeves up on my white blouse to wash my hands. “Don’t knock the snow.”
“What’s so great about it? It’s cold, it’s wet, it gets ugly when exhaust and cars run over it all the time.”
I rolled my eyes. “It means Christmas is coming.” I rinsed the soap from my skin, and flicked my fingers at Angie’s face, water droplets pelting in her direction. “Plus, it means my birthday is almost here.”
Angie was about a year older than I was. When I first started working at Shaker’s, Ang’s hair had just reached her chin, was parted in the middle and was a warm chestnut brown. After her break up, she buzzed the undercut and kept it short, just long enough to grab a decent fistful whenever she was stressed. Her teeth sat in perfectly straightened rows – many thanks to the braces she endured in her teen years. Her pale skin made me envision red sunburns in the summertime. She was simple, but still pretty. It was her firecracker attitude that made me fall in love with her.
“There’s somebody out there asking for you.” Angie stuffed her towel into the back pocket of her black jeans. “All morning - showed up right when we opened.”
I pulled my brows together, tying my apron around my waist hastily as I wandered towards the front. The girls were right – the diner was essentially empty, except for the two occupied booths in the corner. There was a man that sat at the front counter, his hands wrapped gingerly around a cup of coffee and his hat pulled down over his eyes. I grabbed one of the breakfast menus as I wandered towards him.
“Special for the day is blueberry pancakes. Trust me, you’ll want to try ‘em if you’re just passing through.” I mused lightly, sliding the laminated booklet in front of him.
When he looked up, I froze. I would have recognized that petulant stare from a mile away; his brown orbs now darkened into a sort of black, his mouth pulled back into a slight grimace. I braced my hands on the countertop between us, trying to keep the bad taste from rising completely up my throat.
Maddox looked as though he had been through hell and back a few times. I couldn’t find the heart to feel any sort of sympathy.
“Not hungry,” he said finally, pushing the menu away with the tips of his fingers.
I watched him carefully for a moment, assessing the way his shoulders hunched forward, the way his movements seemed controlled and careful. He was trying to make himself small, so much different from how he used to be.
I had loved him once. Prior to the date-party, prior to my unhappy ending, I had believed him every time he said he’d marry me someday, that he’d make me happy. He’d take care of me. That is what I had counted on - being with someone that could protect me from any sort of danger, although I had never fathomed what that danger could possibly be. His honey-brown orbs used to make my head spin, the way he carried himself made me feel as though he was an unstoppable force of nature.
When he was hanging out with my brothers, he spent fight nights stepping into the shoes of some stereotypical douchebag, trying to put on a show to get the cash flowing. He knew people would never bet against him if no one ever landed a solid swing or two on him. He never wanted me to be there, mentioned something about it being too crowded, too busy. I never listened, obviously. Travis always kept good on his promise to sneak me in, but always failed to make sure I didn’t go missing.
“What are you doing here?” I asked curtly, pulling the menu from the countertop to drill holes into his forehead.
Maddox lifted his chin and sighed, his eyes wandering just above my head for a split second before he cracked a small half-smile. “Staying with some friends in the area,” he lied, cocking his left brow, “what are you doing here? Don’t you live on the reserve?”
I pulled my brows together. “How did you know?”
His eyes rolled. “Because you told me where you were born, love.”
“Do not,” I seethed, leaning forward to get in his face, “come in here and pretend like you know me.”
“But I do know you.” Maddox pressed, leaning back away from me quickly. “Your favourite colour is purple. You absolutely love ketchup even though it’s awful for you. You can’t stand the rain yet you can’t seem to find yourself anywhere sunny and warm to live. You’d never admit it outloud, but Trenton is your favoured brother -”
I held up my hand, having heard enough. I was certain he could go on and on. We had spent the majority of a year together as an item; being young had meant we spent more time in private than at house parties. The first time I agreed to go to a frat party was only because he was a freshman and had begged me to come along. Maddox was on bitch duty, had to make sure everyone had a drink in their hand, and had to be the one to clean up the house once everyone had left. Before that night, I thought I had met the one, thought I knew what it was like to be loved.
If only I had known a love like Embry’s, I might’ve been able to save myself from the months of nightmares and internal torment.
I moved down the countertop, wiping the space at the end of the counter where my regular usually sat. He only came in Tuesday mornings, right before his shift at the department with my father. My lips broke into a slightly forced smile as Charlie took his seat, shrugging out of his coat.
“Regular black?” I asked as I pulled a mug from the dishwasher.
“Yes ma’am,” he beamed; his face was old and weary. TJ talked about Charlie quite a bit, with him being the Chief and all. When I finally met him, we clicked and he swore up and down he’d only come in for breakfast or dinner on the nights I was working. He always tipped generously, and always left smiling. Last I heard, he was dating Sue, Seth and Leah’s mom.
I glanced at Maddox from my peripheral vision; he had removed his hat, light brown hair pulled back into a small bun. He was watching me, assessing my movements much like I had been watching him earlier. I tried not to let my annoyance surface, poured Charlie’s coffee and tossed the empty canister into the sink.
I set the mug in front of Charlie, leaning against the countertop. “The special’s blueberry pancakes.” I said cheerfully, browsing through the laminated pages of the menu. “But, you have yet to try any of the omelets – which is a sin, because they’re so delicious.” I mused, eyes scanning over the page.
“How about just a big stack of bacon.” I glanced at him with slight disapproval. “What? Look at the crap I gotta deal with today, I deserve some pig meat.”
“Only if you get eggs with it.” I finalized, standing up straight.
“Fine.” Charlie replied bitterly, taking a sip of the steaming coffee. “Poached.”
“Bacon burnt to a crisp?” I asked, slipping the menu back into its place under the register. Charlie nodded.
Customers trailed in one by one over the course of the next two hours, each seated with heaping mountains of warm breakfast filling their tables. Maddox had yet to finish his coffee, but I was certain it was ice-cold by this point. When I walked past him for the umpteenth time, I swiped his mug off the countertop, dumped the contents in the sink and poured him a fresh cup.
“You didn’t have to do that.” He said once I replaced it in front of him, leaning back on the stool when I neared. I pulled her brows together first in confusion, then annoyance.
“Yes, I did.” I grumbled, wiping the counter around him. “My boss does keep an eye on me, and the customers.”
Maddox pursed his lips together, settling his hands around his mug again, “You’re doing a good job.”
“Don’t.” I hissed, turning to pile the empty and used mugs into the dishwasher up front. When I turned around to restock the napkin dispenser, Maddox was wearing a smug smile. His smugness was nothing like Embry’s - and that made me want to launch my fist right into his nose.
“Would you prefer it if I left?” He asked.
“Yes, actually,” I braced my hand on the counter and the other on my hip, trying to keep my face straight and emotionless, “because I don’t know why you’re here.”
“I wanted to see you.”
I clenched my jaw together tightly, lifting my eyes from his to scan the restaurant. Charlie was pulling his jacket over his uniform, offering me momentary relief.
“I never wanted to see you. So, I think it’s best if you leave.” I pressed, hard eyes cutting back to the unwelcome visitors before I pushed away from the counter to meet Charlie at the till.
Another hour passed; another hour where Maddox waited patiently, where his coffee remained untouched, another hour where I could feel my irritation building. I pushed through the doors behind the kitchen, wandering over to where Angie sat on a pile of skids. I sat down next to her, leaning against the wall for support.
“Still there, huh?” Angie asked with a laugh, working her fingers through her cropped hair.
“Mhm,” I sighed, fixing my ponytail. “I wish he’d leave.”
“Tell him off.”
I rolled my eyes, “Don’t you think I haven’t tried that, Ang?” My friend tossed me a sheepish smile over her shoulder, shrugging meekly. “Debbie would be pissed if he left a bad review.”
“Would he leave a bad review?”
I thought about it for a moment. “Probably. Just to spite me.” We exited the kitchen together, working to clear the tables on our respective halves of the floor, quickly wiping down tables and restocking condiment containers. By the time lunch pulled around, I opted out of walking down the street to buy lunch. I tossed my apron onto the skids in the back, and walked out into the dining area, around the counter with my food.
Maddox watched me take a seat in one of the booths. Much to my dismay, he slipped off his stool, bringing his cold coffee with him.
I watched him settle into the booth across from me; I began pouring the syrup across my two slices of french toast, trying not to pay him any mind. We sat in silence for five minutes before he spoke up, “I’m sorry, did I do something wrong?”
I dropped my fork on my plate, folding my arm., “That’s funny.”
“What is?”
“You’ve got a lot of balls, Maddox.” I spat, cutting through the second piece. “To show up here and pretend like I don’t have every reason to completely hate you. The only reason why I’ve been playing nice is because this is my job, and I have to be nice.”
Maddox leaned forward. “And if we weren’t here?”
“I would’ve kicked you in the fucking balls three hours ago.”
He laughed, mainly to himself, folding his hands on top of the table. “Still feisty, it’s adorable.”
“Yeah,” I growled, “my boyfriend seems to think so, too.”
“I’m sure he does.” Maddox – for the first time that morning – took a small sip of his coffee, face even, smooth and emotionless. “Embry, isn’t it?”
I paused again, eyes burning holes into his, jaw clenching shut again. “How do you know his name?”
“Are you happy?”
I shook my head, pushing my plate away from me. “Dammit, Maddox.” I growled, leaning back in the booth. “How do you know so much about my life here? I haven’t seen you since –” I stopped talking, pursing my lips shut tightly. I watched the slightest hint of remorse flash in his dark eyes. “You need to leave.”
“Ainsley.”
“No. You don’t get to show up here and pretend like nothing happened – like you have a right to know me.”
“Your friends aren’t the safest people to be around, Ains.”
“What friends?” I asked bitterly.
“Jacob, Embry – the rest.” His tone was suggestive as he leaned forward. “They’re walking timebombs, love, you gotta know that’s not safe.”
“Better than a bunch of rapists –”
“I am not a rapist.” He retorted, his eyes flashed quickly and his voice was low and raspy. The sudden change in his demeanor sent a shiver down my spine, causing the hairs on my arms to stand at full attention.
My tongue moved slowly around the words. “No. You’re just an accomplice, which is just as bad.”
Maddox was moving quickly then. He slid out of the booth, reaching into his wallet for a twenty. He slapped it on the table, his nostrils flared angrily. “For the coffee.”
“Coffee’s two-fifty –”
“Then consider it a tip.” He growled, pulling his hat back over his head. Maddox paused for a brief moment, then inhaled deeply and bent down quickly, pressing his lips to my hair – which I tried to refrain from recoiling from. He then turned and appeared to glide towards the front door, walking into the white storm with his hands shoved deep into his pockets. I moved my eyes back down to the twenty on the table, then looked up to meet Angie’s eyes, sinking down into my seat with a sense of defeat washing over my body.

I parked next to Emily’s house, cursing myself for not thinking to pack an extra set of clothing for after my shift. The baby shower was tomorrow, and I promised Emily I would stop by after I finished at the diner to help set up. There were sisters from her hometown that would be driving in, along with the entire pack plus their significant others, and some extended family. Embry and I had gone halfsies on adorable onesies. One read “You People Are Huge” (my choice) and another read “Watch your language asshole, I’m a baby” (Embry’s choice, unfortunately).
I slipped my boots off at the door, leaving my jacket draped over one of the kitchen chairs. “You shouldn’t be doing that.” I chided, moving to help Emily down from the mini-ladder. The kitchen had been overfilled with streamers and balloons carefully and strategically hung from banister to banister.
“My husband wouldn’t help.” She growled, resting a hand on her swollen tummy.
Sam popped his head out from around the corner of the living room, his thick brows pulled together. “You yelled at me and told me you could do it yourself!”
“You’re not supposed to believe me!” Emily hissed, shoving the leftover garbage into the white bag that sat in the middle of the table.
Embry came up from the basement with Jared on his tail; I felt my chest lighten, hands instinctively reaching forward to him. “Warm.” I mumbled happily, wrapping my arms around his stomach, pressing my cold hands against his bare back. He leaned down with a quiet chuckle, pressing his lips to my hair.
And then shoved me away quickly, arms gripping my shoulders tightly.
“Ow.” I whined quietly, trying to squirm away from his grip. “Emb, ease up.”
“You stink.” Embry said definitively, his eyes hard and cold.
I stopped moving, feeling the heat rise in my chest. I looked around the room uncomfortably, then lowered my voice. “No, I didn’t have time to go home and change, I’m sor–”
“No, shut up.” He growled, pulling me into him again, returning his nose to my hair. Embry inhaled deeply, pulling his face away with a look of disgust before he looked over his shoulder, “Sam, c’mere.”
I shoved his arms away from mine, hands rubbing over the skin tentatively, hoping that it wouldn’t be too heavily bruised. I planned on wearing a short-sleeved dress for the shower. Sam put his empty wrappers into the garbage, then leaned over the chair to sniff the air around me.
His face hardened, much like Embry’s had, a certain distaste crawled over his features as a visible tremor rolled down his spine. Emily watched from behind Embry with a confused expression, carefully keeping close eyes on Sam’s frame. “That’s the scent.” Embry finally said, taking a step away from my frame.
“They’re in Forks.” Jared said quietly from his seat on the stairs.
“What are they doing in Forks?”
“Who’s in Forks?” I wondered out loud, looking up at Embry for some sort of explanation. He ignored me, following Sam into the living room as the pair began conversing hastily. Jared rolled his eyes, giving Emily a knowing glance.
“Woah, what stinks?” Paul scrunched his nose up, Jacob, Leah and Trent following suit as they entered in from the crisp outdoors. Paul and Jacob were bare-chested and wearing cut-offs, which meant they were back from their evening patrol.
“Ainsley.” Jared grumbled in reply to Paul, his eyes narrowing in my direction.
Emily threw a roll of tape in his general direction. “Give it a rest, Jared.”
“What’s going on?”
Emily rolled her eyes, sitting next to me at the table, “Ainsley came across one of the scents today and brought it home, so I’m sure Sam and Embry are in the living room plotting how to eliminate the threat.”
Paul sat on the other side of me, sniffing again. I blushed. “That’s the males – how did you manage to bring that home?”
“Bring what home?” I asked, annoyance dripping off each word.
“The leeches scent. You’re covered in it.” He stated, as if it were the most obvious thing.
I paused, rearing my thoughts back to my day. I always kept an eye out for anything that seemed out of place, people that seemed obviously beautiful and perfect. People that seemed restrained. “Maddox ..” I whispered quietly, feeling my chest cave abruptly. There was no way –
“Maddox?” Trent asked from across the table. “What’s he doing in Forks?”
“He was looking for me at Shaker’s.” I replied absently, eyes unfocused on the table in front of me. “Came by before I even showed up, didn’t leave until after lunch rush.”
“What did he want?” Paul asked, kicking his feet up onto the table. Emily grimaced.
I shrugged, hoping I could remain cool and collected. “No idea, honestly. That would explain how he knows you all by name – that’s what he meant when he said you were …” I sighed, letting my eyes slip shut. “This makes sense.” Kind of.
“His scent is saturating you, Ains.” Embry drawled from the doorway, arms folded across his broad chest. Sam stood next to him, mimicking the same seriousness.
I could feel my shoulders drop forward, attempting to make myself small under the careful watch of everyone in the room. “He sat with me when I was on break.”
“You let the scumbag sit with you?” Trent asked dubiously.
Better rip the bandaid off. “And he might have kissed my head before he left.” I conceded.
“Ainsley –”
“I told him to leave.” I said desperately, trying to avoid bringing my eyes to meet my boyfriends. Embry had tried his best to keep his temper from coming forward when I was around, trying to believe nothing I did was to purposely hurt him. But in that moment, I could see Leah move in between Trent and Embry, hands braced on the back of his chair. The room had shifted; it was suddenly thick, hot and uncomfortable.
“Who’s Maddox?” Jacob asked, breaking the silence in the room. I shared a look with Trent, hoping he would keep good on his word. When he met my eyes, his face softened in understanding. The situation I had thrown myself into was not one out of choice: undoubtedly, Embry was fuming. If not because a vampire had been close enough to his imprint that I could have died, then because said vampire had actually touched me. Kissed me.
“Someone from Seattle that I knew.” Trent said finally. “Worked with him for a few months. Not the greatest guy.”
“Perfect. So, we’re doing the world a favour, then.” Embry suggested, anger dripping from his words. It was uncomfortable to hear him speak so freely about the idea of killing someone, although I knew they didn’t necessarily see it as murder. Couldn’t kill what was already dead.
“What are you going to do, Emb? Kill him yourself?” Leah asked from behind Trent, her tone half-teasing.
“Yes.”
All eyes shot to Embry then, watching his arms settle at his sides, fists trembling the slightest bit. I thought back to Maddox – small visions played across my mind. Embry’s large gray wolf ripping through his flesh, his growls filling the empty air. I tried to suppress the urge to shiver.
“Guess we’re heading back out there.” Jacob sighed, nodding toward Leah. “Embry, maybe you should go home with Ains. If one of them knows her, it might be better if –”
“No.” He said angrily, his hard eyes cutting back to me briefly before he returned his gaze to Jacob dutifully. “I'm going with you.”
At this point, I couldn’t tell if he was adamant about finding Maddox to kill him, or if he really didn’t want to be stuck with me. I was trying to pretend like the latter wasn’t a possibility. The room emptied quickly, each warm body following Embry out of the front door, slamming it shut behind them. Trent, Emily and I sat around the kitchen table, quietly looking around the half-decorated room.
“Better finish this, then.” I said finally, grabbing a roll of tape. Emily and my brother watched me for only a moment, both of their faces heavy, before Trent stood and came to help. We spent the following hour hanging multi-coloured ribbon from the ceiling, turning Emily’s kitchen and living room into open areas with lots of space, full of balloons and streamers.
I offered to give Trent a ride back to Leah’s, seeing as Jacob had been their original ride to Emily’s. Once we were in the Jeep, he turned the heat on full and turned to me.
“Are we going to talk about what happened?”
“Don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“C’mon, Ains.” He sighed, leaning his elbow against the window. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.”
“That’s a load of shit,” he grumbled, “Maddox gave you hell.”
“Maddox wasn’t the one who defiled me and left me on the bathroom floor.”
Trent clenched his jaw. “No, but he was the one who let frat scum slip a pill into your drink.”
“Trent, leave it alone.”
“Why?” My brother asked, neck craned so he could look at me with a hard expression. “Maddox deserves everything Embry wants to do to him, and probably more.”
I didn’t respond; my hands gripped the steering wheel tightly while my eyes focused on navigating through the white sheet of snow that whirled around in the darkness. I didn’t want to talk about Maddox. I didn’t want anyone to know about what had happened, or give Embry more of a reason to get angry. I didn’t want to make excuses for the man, but I didn’t want to think about my boyfriend taking pleasure in killing anyone.
“Ainsley,” Trenton finally broke the silence, a sigh tumbling from lips. “Do you wanna go home? We can go home. I’ll stay at the house with you.”
I shook my head vehemently. “No, I should probably be there when Embry comes back.” I sniffled, wiping my nose on my sleeve. I was still sick and the outside weather wasn’t helping me feel any less crappy. “You’re living with Leah now?” I asked, glancing over at Trent in the darkness.
He shrugged. “My idea. Took a lot of persuasion.
“I bet.” I mumbled, turning into Leah’s driveway. “She doesn’t seem like she’s the type to jump head first into all of this.”
“Definitely not.” He laughed, pulling his hat over his ears. “See you tomorrow?”
“Yeah.” I nodded, offering him a smile as he exited the vehicle.
The ride back to Embry and Jacob’s side of the reservation was slow; neither of the men were home when I arrived. To spare any sort of argument later, I showered as quickly and thoroughly as I could, and threw in a load of laundry in hopes of eliminating any traces of the vampire stench. The clock on the kitchen wall read 11:56 PM by the time I finished eating and cleaned the dishes.
My eyes fought sleep until my phone read 2:00 AM. I finally gave up waiting for Embry to come home, and gave in to the exhaustion that draped over me like a thick blanket. I locked the windows tightly, ensuring to keep any harsh winds from coming through. Then, I collapsed onto my side of the bed, pulling the thick white duvet up to my chin, shivering slightly in the bed that was colder than usual.

Wildest dreams, pt. 19
Summary: The pack is looking for Paul.
Warnings: angst, mentions of a forest fire
Wildest Dreams Masterlist
————————————
The wolf’s ears perk up as he smells a familiar scent – one that he’d gotten accustomed to in all the years of knowing his pack brother. He’s in human form, Embry can tell.
I’ve got a trace. Embry tells Jared and Seth who’ve joined him and Sam in the hunt for Paul. It’s faint but he’s been here.
What is he doing all the way here? Seth wonders, changing his direction to where Embry is.
Better question is: why would he leave Y/N to worry without a warning? Jared reiterates.
He can’t remember ever leaving someplace without checking in with his imprint first and it’s not because she forces him to or because he’s ‘on a short leash’ as Paul used to tease him, rather because he senses Kim’s worries. It’s not a pleasant feeling to mirror, but Jared’s learned it’s a much lighter weight on his heart when he explains where he’s going and why; she breathes easier and his mind is free. So why did Paul go into the forest so far from where his home without telling his imprint? Doesn’t he feel Y/N’s worried sick?
That’s something he’ll have to explain to Y/N, not us. He doesn’t owe us anything. Embry exclaims, hearing Jared’s monologue.
Considering I left Kim alone with the kids, he better have an explanation for me too.
STOP! Sam exclaims, the rest of the pack falling silent. Paul’s close. Looking around, Sam makes sure the rest of the pack can get a sense of where he’s picked up a stronger, fresh scent. I don’t think he’s hurt. Or so he hopes. There’s no smell of blood in the air, but there are ways of injuring oneself without a single drop spilled. And worse…much worse.
It doesn’t take long for the rest of the pack to catch up, all of them taking different directions in the area in hopes of finding Paul.
He’s gone closer to the beach. Seth informs, following the invisible trail toward his friend.
Maybe he went for a stroll and we’re all overreacting? Jared questions only for Embry to remark.
If by ‘WE’ you mean Y/N, then you better get your thoughts under control. Even if she mistook the empty bed for a stroll, she’s in actual distress emotionally and that’s not something we ignore or judge. Unless you want a reminder of that time we all had to follow you to Canada because Kim swore you were abducted.
She didn’t mean to alarm you guys.
Embry snorts. She dragged me out of bed by my ankle and forced me to call the pack.
Okay, okay, I got the point. Jared grumbles as Seth stops, pointing his snout down a small hill.
I think I found him. Seth huffs as he angles his head to get a better look underneath the hill toward the narrow, overgrown path. I’ll shift.
Seth didn’t wait for the rest of them to respond before taking human form. Untying the shorts from his left leg, he covers up quickly.
“Paul?” Seth tries, hoping Paul would respond and he wouldn’t have to go down. Hearing nothing but birds chirping in return, Seth sighs. At least there are no vampires lurking or the birds wouldn’t be singing. They’d run in fear to the nearest shelter, just as any other sane being. The wolves are not quite as bright as them.
Considering climbing down, Seth furrows his eyebrows. It wouldn’t take long, but it would still waste time. The path seems clear enough for him to jump, the drop is barely 9 ft. Jumping is simpler, he concludes before taking his thoughts and acting on them.
After the rain of yesterday, Seth could see the dark mud of the path, yet the pine needles on top were already pale and moving with the breeze. Blinking fast, he looks ahead only for his lips to part.
Ahead, in the overgrown bushes that lay underneath the pine trees, sat Paul with his head in his hands and his knees supporting his elbows.
“Paul!” Running toward him, Seth places a hand on Paul’s bare shoulder. “You got us breaking a sweat today”, he chuckles. “I was genuinely terrified thinking about going back to Y/N without you.”
At the sound of her name, Paul flinches and his head snaps up to meet Seth’s relieved smile. It’s all that took for Seth’s smile to retreat and for his heart to drop.
Before him sat Paul, but his eyes are damp with tears that left streaks down his cheeks; all the way down to his chin from where the tears have dripped onto the soil. His lips are chapped and quivering as though he wishes to scream but he can’t breathe, robbed of the ability to use the oxygen that surrounds him. His body is trembling and if Seth didn’t know how hot wolves run, he’d think he’s freezing.
“What happened”, Seth sits beside him, his eyes unable to comprehend the devastation in Paul’s gaze.
“This is it”, Paul grimaces as if the act of speaking inflicts unbearable pain.
“What is?”
Looking ahead, Paul nods toward a tree a few steps away. “It’s where I saw her die.”
“That won’t happen”, Seth is quick to object. “We won’t allow it.”
Biting his lower lip, Paul shrugs. “It doesn’t matter what we do, this is where she’ll close her eyes for the last time.”
“How can you be so certain?” Seth narrows his eyes at him. “We aren’t giving up. As long as she’s breathing, we have a chance to save her!”
“I see it all the time”, Paul says quietly, “sometimes it’s different but the end is always the same.” And it drives him insane. One moment he’s holding her warm, bare body against his, the next she’s cold, limp, lifeless in his arms.
“Different how?”
“The first time I only saw her die, but now? I see images that lead to it.” Closing his eyes shut, Paul sniffles. “She’s running from something”, he chokes up. “Sometimes I’m with her, a few times I’ve seen Jacob, Embry once, but she’s alone most times”, Paul pauses as a shuddered breath passes his lips. “She’s terrified and I can’t protect her”, he grimaces. “And then she’s in my arms and I’m looking into her eyes and there’s nothing looking back at me.”
Covering his mouth, Seth stares at the spot Paul showed him. If that’s where Y/N dies, then maybe he has a way to make sure it doesn’t come true.
Digging into his pocket, Seth pulls out a lighter before standing straight.
“What are you doing?” Paul jumps to his feet as the flame dances at Seth’s command.
Raising his brows, Seth pulls out a folded sheet of paper from his back pocket. The grocery list isn’t as important as this. “If this is where she dies in your vision, then I’ll destroy it. If there’s no tree or path, how can she die here?”
Frowning deeply, Paul shakes his head. “You’d probably only change the spot where it happens.”
Snorting, Seth shakes his head as he holds up the lighter toward the paper. “Why were you here then? Why’d you leave Y/N alone just to come sit here?”
“Because I dreamt of it again! And for once, I knew where to go.” Running his hand down his face to wipe the tears, Paul purses his lips as he gnaws at the inside of the bottom one. “I needed to see it for myself. To find where it is.”
“So you’d know it’s real”, Seth nods. “Well it is.” He smirks, “And I’m willing to make sure it’s not anymore.”
“Do it”, Jared orders from the hill. “We can try it. We have to.”
“And if the whole forest sets on fire?” Paul turns to Sam who stood quietly.
“We will find a way to contain the fire.”
A small smile appears on Paul’s face as he looks Seth in the eye and nods. “Burn it all.”
While Paul had found a way to ease some of his worry, Y/N couldn’t sit still. She managed to find the few cleaning supplies her dearest wolf owns in Paul’s bathroom and decided to keep herself busy…as well as Jacob.
“Do I really have to”, Jacob whines as he pulls out a little bit of hair out of the drain. “You know I hate this stuff!”
“The girl from Ring will not appear and murder you”, Y/N deadpans. “She’s not real”, she reminds him before pausing, her eyebrows furrowing. “She’s not, is she?”
Chuckling, Jacob shakes his head. “I’ve only ever heard of vampires, shape shifters and rumors about witches.”
“Like Salem?” Her eyes widen. “They were real?”
“Something like that.”
Scrubbing the tiles, she bites her lower lip. Living her whole life as a devout bookworm, Y/N never imagined the things she read about could ever become reality. Older she got, less magic she found in the world. It’s like age siphons it out of you, replacing it with sarcasm and bitterness that settles roots inside the heart in order to flourish for years to come.
Paul feels like the cure to the toxins this tree has been secreting into her bloodstream. She’s been poisoned for so long that her mind became an abyss nothing light could ever penetrate.
She sees the light now, for the first time in a really long time, Y/N sees the end of the famed tunnel everyone’s been stuck in at least once in their life.
“He’s coming back, right?” Her voice is small, laced with fear and self-doubt Jacob wished she could shed.
Swallowing thickly, he turns to look at her, catching her eye in the mirror. “He’d be a damn fool not to.”
“I need him to not be a fool then”, she states and Jacob nods, reassuring her.
“He’ll come back.”
