Mr. Frank Embree, Fayette, Missouri, 1899.
0 notes
Text
On the morning of July 22, 1899, a white mob abducted Frank Embree from officers transporting him to stand trial and lynched him in front of a crowd of over 1,000 onlookers in Fayette, Missouri.
About one month earlier, Frank Embree had been arrested and accused of assaulting a white girl. Though his trial was scheduled for July 22, the town’s residents grew impatient and, rather than allow Mr. Embree to stand trial, took matters into their own hands by lynching Mr. Embree.
According to newspaper accounts, the mob attacked officers transporting Mr. Embree, seized him, loaded him into a wagon, and drove him to the site of the alleged assault. Once there, Mr. Embree’s captors immediately tried to extract a confession by stripping him naked and whipping him in front of the assembled crowd, but he steadfastly maintained his innocence despite this abuse. After withstanding more than 100 lashes to his body, Mr. Embree began screaming and told the men that he would confess. Rather than plead for his life, Mr. Embree begged his attackers to stop the torture and kill him swiftly. Covered in blood from the whipping, with no courtroom or legal system in sight, Mr. Embree offered a confession to the waiting lynch mob and was immediately hanged from a tree.
Black people accused of crimes during this era were regularly subjected to beatings, torture, and threats of lynching in efforts to obtain a confession, and the results of those coercive attacks were later used to "justify" the lynchings that followed. In fact, without fair investigation or trial, the confession of a lynching victim was more reliable evidence of fear than guilt.
Though published photographs of Mr. Embree’s lynching clearly depict the faces of many of his assailants, no one was ever arrested or tried for his death.

CIA's Heart Attack Gun
Former CIA employee Mary Embree discusses the infamous heart attack gun. The weapon was first made public during the Church Committee hearings in 1975. Very lethal & untraceable, using this weapon a murder is made to look natural. No doubt the CIA has been using this weapon and has most likely has been improved upon since the 70's. 🤔

The Sound Of Animals Fighting Go Apeshit At Webster Hall
By Joseph Buscarello - On Jan 23, 2023
Post-hardcore collective The Sound of Animals Fighting rolled through Webster Hall this past Saturday, January 21st, for the penultimate show on their 2023 winter tour. The tour comes fresh off the release of their new EP, and first new music in 15 years, Apeshit. These shows mark the band’s only fourth ever tour, but the hardcore supergroup were in fine form Saturday night as the eight-piece collective constantly shifted roles and personnel throughout the night.
The Sound of Animals Fighting have always existed behind shroud and mystery, famously doing their original press photos wearing animal masks and only identifying the band members via their animal monikers. While the core lineup has not been a mystery in a long time, the band has a new permutation of their rotating personnel for this era. Vocalist Anthony Green (Circa Survive, Saosin, L.S. Dunes) anchors the band with his soaring, melodic vocal style backed by RX Bandits members Rich Balling, Matt Embree, Steve Choi, and Chris Tsagakis. Rounding out the Apeshit lineup is Keith Goodwin (Days Away, Good Old War), Matthew Kelly (The Autumns), and Jonathan Hischke.
On Apeshit, The Sound of Animals Fighting dial back the atmosphere and cinematic elements of their style in favor of more straight forward and in-your-face post hardcore. Standout track “Sharon Tate, Despite Everything” comes in waves; Rich Balling drones over a dark and melodic instrumental with sporadic drumming then Anthony Green barges in screaming out a long “Sharon Tate…” as the song takes on a more formal post-hardcore progression. The two sections blend together as the song progresses, creating one of the most interesting songs in the genre in some time. The title track kicks off the EP with a relentless hardcore presentation and technical, near math rock guitar and rhythm sections. Things slow down a bit on “Wolf”, with swirling and distorted synths backed by electronic drum kicks before the EP closes with “Duche Das”, most reminiscent of the interludes on 2007’s Tiger and The Duke.
With the tour over, and the EP released, the future is uncertain for The Sound of Animals Fighting. The band has only toured four times since their debut in 2005 and all of their members are active in many other projects. Anthony Green himself has seen a resurgence in recent years, forming new band L.S. Dunes (who are fresh off a debut LP and tour) and remaining active in Saosin. While Circa Survive is currently on hiatus, you never know what Green will embark on next.
The passion and cohesiveness of The Sound of Animals Fighting was top tier at Webster Hall this past weekend. The band performs as if they have been on regular tour for 15 years and the energy and engagement with the crowd was palpable. While we wait and see what the future holds, we can rest assured that we just witnessed one of the best post-hardcore tours in recent memory. Check out the full photo gallery from Webster Hall below.

you’re an animal keeper, too??? What kind of critter friends do you have? I know we’re not supposed to pick favorites, but do you have some you really enjoy being around?
I work at a smaller place that focuses more on wildlife rehab, so I get to work with a whole variety of species!! And I for sure have favorites (even if I’m not supposed to lol) I love our sheep (we have a blind one named Helen), Fennec Foxes (Eva and Embree, still babies!), and our Turkey (her name is Cracker and we’re buddies)

25 in 2025
No one's tagged me in this, but it looks fun to me so I wanted to do it. If you want to do it, go for it, and say I tagged you!
All books are from my big pile of books I've bought and haven't read yet, because I really need to get on that. Purple ones were on my 24 in 2024 list that I didn't get to, and green ones were purchases from Independent Bookstore Day 2024 (ideally I'll read them before Independent Bookstore Day 2025, but we shall see.) Some might be both.
In no order, though the first half of the list is fiction and the second half is nonfiction.
The Prisoner of Zenda - Anthony Hope
Tress of the Emerald Sea - Brandon Sanderson
The Art of Prophecy - Wesley Chu
Lavinia - Ursula K. Le Guin
Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries - Heather Fawcett
The Iliad - Homer, translated by Emily Wilson
The Mysteries of Udolpho - Ann Radcliffe
She Would Be King - Wayétu Moore
Kalevala - Elias Lönnrot, translated by Eino Friberg
More Days at the Morisaki Bookshop - Satoshi Yagisawa, translated by Eric Ozawa
The Peacekeeper - B.L. Blanchard
Sparrows in the Wind - Gail Carson Levine
Real Queer America: LGBT Stories From Red States - Samantha Allen
Within the Fairy Castle: Colleen Moore’s Doll House - Terry Ann R. Neff
The Anglo-Saxon World - Kevin Crossley-Holland
Building Anglo-Saxon England - John Blair
Enchanted Wales: Myth and Magic in Welsh Storytelling - Miranda Aldhouse-Green
False, Fleeting, Perjur'd Clarence - Michael Hicks
The Greek Way of Death - Robert Garland
Medieval Women: Voices and Visions - edited by Eleanor Jackson and Julian Harrison
Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms: Art, Word, War - edited by Claire Breay and Joanna Story
The Contemporary English Chronicles of the Wars of the Roses - edited by Dan Embree and M. Teresa Tavormina
The Military Campaigns of the Wars of the Roses - Philip Haigh
The Nobility of Later Medieval England - K.B. McFarlane
Six Lives: The Story of Henry VIII's Queens - Charlotte Boland
Lots of things on medieval England, but a lot of them are SCA-related. I want to branch out with other history too this year, but these are the books I've already accumulated.
Again, if you want to do this, go for it and say I tagged you!
