people need to start appreciating Ema Skye more. she’s literally the funniest ace attorney character. she doesn’t explain her reasonings for things any further than a baseline “because science” and it’s HILARIOUS. she makes monty python references in the middle of a murder trial. her and lana’s story beautifully mirrors that of maya and mia’s. if you pay attention you’ll realize she gave her pins out to all her friends in the apollo justice games. she just casually walks around with luminol testing fluid. she and edgeworth are besties almost immediately after meeting. 10/10 character i love her and i wish she had more fans.

Character Introduction (Investigations 1): Ema Skye

This is the 49th post in the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection Countdown: 32 days left until release!

Today's topic: Ema Skye Character Introduction!

The 1st Investigations gets another additional character introduction, namely for Ema Skye. Interesting since she's anything but a main character in the game. She's only relevant in one case and even there not central to the narrative. But she is a known character from other games in the series so it does make sense to highlight her presence a little.

Ema's introduction spends some time talking about her current status in life, how she studies abroad in Europe to become a forensic investigator, her dream, and how she's back home only temporarily because she's on holiday. Since we see her at various different stages in life it's very useful to recap a little. Next we get an impression of one of Ema's core personality traits, her love for science and forensics, with the statement that she still has test kits with her just in case even though she's on vacation. She's the kind of person who sprays stuff with Luminol just for fun and I love her for it. That's also important because her forensic utensils are the reason Ema brings so much to investigations she's a part of and isn't just there for the sake of it. Her appearance almost always means some kind of forensics mini game and gathering evidence the scientific way and I always have fun doing that, in Investigations just the same. Lastly, Ema's introduction mentions her past connection to Miles in a different case (referencing 1-5, Rise from the Ashes) and how much she admires him, which shapes their relationship and is also the given reason for Ema's appearance as she heard Miles was investigating a case and wanted to help him, like the adorable fangirl she is. I really like their relationship, Miles appreciates her input so much and gets so wonderfully awkward when Ema's admiration for him comes through.

Sadly, Ema's full character artwork is pretty lackluster. It's just her neutral pose from the game in large and with all the details. I love the way they styled her, a nice mixture of her younger and older selves and very fitting to her current age, but I wish they'd done a little more with the artwork. Her chosen chibi sprite animation, in contrast, is wonderful! It's a comparatively long animation of her putting on her pink forensic glasses and looking for footprints by spraying some stuff and shining a hand-held light on the area. It looks beautiful in the new HD graphics! I especially love the reflections in the glasses, the detail in how the aerosols of the spray move and the subtle change in her facial expression where you see that she's excited and having fun. Even with her hat and glasses on you can see it clearly. Amazing!

okay you know what. this has delayed me by an entire two days in writing the apolluke fic (should really come up with an acronym or something) so I have to outsource the question

riddle me this! I don’t know what detective to have on the case.

my first thought was ema! but, the fic’s in 2028 and I know that we’re retconning SoJ’s 2028 events but she’s 100% gotten her promotion to a forensic scientist by this point and I refuse to believe she hasnt. she DESERVES.

and I adore ema as a character but honest to god despite finishing my Apollo Justice playthrough recently could NOT get a grasp on her personality?? she’s just kinda very moody and as funny as it is, that isn’t very present on SoJ from what I’ve seen (don’t own a copy and still watching the game) but she is more likely, I just have no will to write her yet nor the confidence.

the thing is?? I don’t really have other options. because we’re post DD so no Fulbright and as much as I am the biggest Gumshoe fan to walk the earth iii think he isn’t gonna work here. I could always do an OC and that is my second option if I can’t figure out how the hell I’m gonna write Ema but I do have the OCs for this case worked out and there’s no space for the detective to be really case relative. a new detective would be so fun to write though and honest to god I already have plenty ocs that can do that legwork

sorry to yell here about this!! this was. um. super long and also ema Skye appreciation I adore her but I dont know if I can’t write her she’s delayed me by days already and I hope to have this up by Monday (my time) . On the other hand if I do plan to make more casefics/side fics for the Apolluke Penpal Cinematic Universe, a dedicated detective could be fun but would require introducing to the audience

Ooohh yeah I hear ya there. Figuring out a solid Detective for a case is a bit tricky, especially when it comes to Ema. She seems like a normal, easy character on the outset (how hard can it really be to write a jaded once bright-eyed lover of all things forensic sciences?? She's a nerd to boot, should be easy!), but lots of difficulties once you get into the weeds. (She's jaded, but in a similar way to Hobohodou. She hates Klavier Gavin with a passion. She's excited for her job but she's stuck with all these damn fussy boys!) (SoJ is pretty excellent for her character, love to see her though my poor dear goes through some of it ;w; ;;; ) I, too, love her, though, so no worries, I love hearing the take on her!! =w=

A new detective would be cool to see, tbh!! I'm all for Ace Attorney OCs (I have my own and all lol) (Prosecutor, his Mortician siblings, and their twin Detective buds) (duality is a theme I lean into a lot hahaha), so if it works better like that, then go for it! Could also like, make Kay the Detective if you prefer a familiar face, I know popular fanon is that she's Detective by the AJ era.

A wild chaotic third option, force Luke to fill the Detective role lmao-- (/I am removed for being too chaotic)

The Patch

Ema has been in Europe the past two years studying to become a forensic scientist. Upon returning home, she helps Miles Edgeworth with one of his investigations, though in the process, she learns shocking news about Phoenix Wright.

When Ema returned to America to surprise and help Mr. Edgeworth in some of his investigation, she hadn’t expected where it would lead.

While they worked on footprint analysis, they made small talk. And since she had been away to Europe for two years, she thought she might as well ask. “How is Mr. Wright doing?”

Miles froze in place, staring down at the dirt that they both kneeled over. A shadow cast over his face and he didn’t say anything - not at first.

“Mr. Edgeworth…?” She didn’t like this. What could possibly have made Miles Edgeworth so silent? Had she really missed so much in two years?

Another moment of quiet passed, though he finally huffed a sigh in response. “He is...fine,” he said finally, but Ema didn’t feel any more reassured. Her heart pounded in her ears.

“I don’t believe you,” she replied, blinking at her own bluntness. He still refused to look her in the eye. “Please tell me what happened. I need to know if he’s okay.” If something had happened to Phoenix while she was gone...she wasn’t sure what she would do.

Miles pressed his lips together, finally bringing himself to look back up, meeting her eyes. There was something sad behind his own. “Wright is physically fine, as I said,” he began slowly. “But I’m afraid he got himself into a bit of a mess. One he couldn’t bluff his way out of. He...They took his badge.”

Ema felt her heart drop into her stomach, feeling quite woozy all of a sudden. “Took his badge?” she repeated softly, like the words weren’t her own. They didn’t feel real.

“Yes. They accused him of forging evidence and forfeited his badge,” he confirmed, and though he kept his tone light, perhaps for her sake, each word felt like a separate punch to her gut. Phoenix Wright, forging evidence? No way.

“I-I don’t...that can’t be right…” she muttered, and though she was kneeling, her knees felt weak.

“Ema -” Miles didn’t get to say what he wanted, because Kay returned to his side to talk about something that seemed to excite her - perhaps something to do with her little gadget. Ema wasn’t sure what it was, though, because she couldn’t focus. The words around her sounded muffled, like she was underwater, drowning, rather than sitting in the dirt.

She wasn’t exactly sure how much time had passed, but soon an Interpol agent came to take her and the old lady away. Ema tried to resist, wanting to stay with Miles, but it seemed that the agent had the authority here.

But she refused to testify for this guy. Besides, her mind was elsewhere.

While Lang interrogated the old lady, and his subordinate wasn’t looking, Ema slipped away from the crime scene and ran. She needed to see him. She couldn’t stand by. Miles wouldn’t joke about something like this.

Breathless from running a few blocks, she leaned a hand against the outside of the law office, bending over. This building brought back memories from a scary time in her life - one where she felt all alone, with no one on her side. But she hadn’t been alone, after all. Phoenix had been there, and he found the truth. It was because of him that her sister was free and happy and back to her old self again.

What if he felt exactly the way she did…?

Wasting no more time, she headed up the stairs two at a time and knocked at the door, waiting with bated breath. On the other side, there was a quiet shuffle and the familiar sound of a desk chair being rolled backward. Footsteps, and then the door opened.

Phoenix stood there, his shoulders slouched, hands shoved into a gray hoodie’s pockets, normally spiky hair hidden beneath a blue hat. Stubble dotted his chin and huge dark shadows laid beneath his eyes. She was almost sure his surprise was reflected on her face, too.

“Ema…?” he blinked, finding his voice first, and a small smile pulled at his lips. “I thought you were in Europe. Don’t tell me you’ve completed your schooling already.”

Phoenix and Maya: going HOG WILD on the classic Disney back catalog and all the best duets of the 80s.

Phoenix can actually sing quite well; he’s not going to have a side gig as a rock star but he was definitely good enough to be an actual singer at the Borscht Bowl Club instead of a shitty pianist if he’d wanted to

(he perhaps did not want to do something he actually cared about for money at that point in his life)

Maya cannot sing for SHIT but by God she’s not going to let that stop her

they do a great “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and take turns with who takes which role (Meg or the Muses) on “(I Won’t Say) I’m In Love”

they also do “Friends on the Other Side” because they think they’re funny

only in the first half of the evening, though, otherwise they end up kind of weepy drunk about it

If Miles is there: Phoenix will, at some point near the end of the evening, break out an incredibly sappy dad rock ballad. absolutely everyone can tell what’s going on, he’s not even trying to be subtle about it.

like, we’re talking “Faithfully” by Journey and “Just the Way You Are” by Billy Joel levels of sappy

I find it hard to picture a karaoke bar in Japanifornia having “Long Time Running” by the Tragically Hip in its repertoire but if I remember that this is a goofy tumblr post and there are no gods or kings, he would absolutely do that too, and if he did, Miles would break sufficiently to kiss him in front of all of their employees

Miles does actually come to karaoke a lot but he absolutely does not sing, he’s just here to be an appreciative audience.

Lana Skye, out of jail by this point: doesn’t get near the mic until she’s had at least two drinks and a great deal of friendly persuasion, at which point she, with the most deadpan facial expression ever seen on Earth, selects “Jailhouse Rock.”

she actually has a very weak voice and no range whatsoever but no one actually hears that much of her singing because they are, after an initial beat of shock, losing their fucking minds

Klavier Gavin: always checks to see if his own songs are available, but he's way too much of a perfectionist to enjoy doing karaoke performances of them, so he doesn’t

also, like. he does have a sense of sportsmanship and that’s just not on

honestly being at karaoke when you’re an actual charting rockstar is kind of unsportsmanlike by default, and as much as he likes being the center of attention he also likes being liked and likes it when people have fun, so he mostly gets everyone else in the room to pick what they think would be funny to make him sing

he does a pretty good “Uptown Funk” and a damn solid “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under”

Ema Skye has tried him on “I Feel Pretty” and he did not hesitate a second

Apollo Justice: regards the microphone with such profound trepidation that everyone assumes he cannot sing a note

naturally him acting like the mic is a guillotine makes every single one of his friends and colleagues decide that it is their highest calling in life to make him do it

at which point Thalassa “Lamiroir” Gramarye’s son sighs, loosens his tie, and breaks out an effortless note-perfect rendition of Nina Simone’s “Feelin’ Good” that leaves Klavier Gavin literally incapable of speech

Hello, Hello! Before you request, please read the rules below! And if I've noticed that you didn't specifically read the rules, I will either ask you about it or delete it so please read it carefully.

Rules when requesting:

— If you request, don't request again. It is very frustrating for me to just make a request from the same anon/user, leaving the others to not get the chances to request.

— If the Request Box is closed, then it is closed. Once you request something and the request box is closed, it is an instant delete. I'm sorry but please check the navigation post or the description, it's always updated so don't worry.

— Similarly to the first rule, if I somehow received two-three requests that has the same plot along with the characters, and that you've sent that same request throughout the blog, I'm truly sorry but you're getting a block, it is very annoying and it made me get burnt out because of this.

— Please be specific on what you request! Which characters do you want, what kind of plot, which gender, what kind of writing styles since I mostly do HCs if not specified but I do write Alphabetical Prompts, One shots, etc.

— If you were to send many characters in the ask, it's actually fine by me but the only exception is that the more characters such as the number like 4-5 and up, the headcanons will get shorter than my usual posts so if you want longer ones then it's better to minimize ^^

— When requesting for the prompts, Alphabetical etc. Please be specific if you either want the whole alphabets or something similar like that! [Ex. May I request a (chr name) with a yandere alphabet A, B, Cs?] [Another ex. Maybe a (chr name) with the whole yandere alphabets?] It'll be appreciated if it's specified!

— If the request of the gender isn't specified, it'll be Gender-Neutral. But if about the Male! Reader, I'm not sure if I can be able to do it so it will be probably be Gender-Neutral.

— Lastly, You're free to interact with me if the requests are closed or you just want to be friends with me! Either is fine ^^

Mod Edgeworth: Also, the updated animation, the return of Ema Skye, the return of using forensics as part of the investigation, Trucy’s introduction, Klavier’s introduction, Apollo’s introduction, the best tutorial in all of Ace Attorney, having each case connected more than the other previous games, the introduction to the Dark Age of the Law, placing Phoenix in a situation that tests his morality, might I say more? Honestly, the hate for the game Apollo Justice was overblown. The only things I didn’t like about it was the MASON system, the intro to the Jury System and how boring the trial for Turnabout Corner was. Beyond that, I absolutely loved it and, if not for Miles Edgeworth Investigations 2, this would be my top favorite with Spirit of Justice.

For the first DGS, I’ve only played through the first three chapters. And this man...

I... I think I’m in love. 

Co-Mod: I’m just going by what the wiki says, so he’s Mr. Furst as far as I’m concerned.  That won’t be official on this blog for a little longer, of course, so enjoy “Adam Ladyfirst” while it lasts.

To put it simply, I’m absolutely loving the Chronicles games so far (not that I wasn’t expecting to)!  Even knowing how the first game’s plot goes, it’s been pretty nice to see some of the details I was unable to enjoy when I was just watching the fan localization, and the writing -- both the part I’m familiar with and the new stuff -- keeps making me laugh.  Needless to say, I’m eagerly awaiting some good moments in the second game as well.

Co-Mod: I’ve only seen parts of it, but I’d love to take in the whole musical someday.  Many of the songs in it were written by Matthew Taranto, a favorite webcomic artist and composer of mine, and his wife, Sarah, so I know it’s bound to be high-quality stuff.  Even putting that aside, I appreciate the effort it must take to combine a great story with original music, as well as adding and changing some of the lines (kind of like we do here), so kudos to Diana Papparozi, Sarah Shope, and everyone else who took part in putting that together.

Mod Edgeworth: Okay, I only censored that one to give an example of what my censoring would look like. I don’t mind you using the derogatory word for sex. Co-Mod is the one that censors words like that. If I do, it will be left with a warning for language. I personally feel uncomfortable with censoring words without giving everyone the choice to read it or not.

My limit is anything that goes past rated T or acceptable to Dual Destinies, which is rated M. When it comes to words, context is key. Maybe it’s because I’m from Texas, but I see cuss words as small potatoes when compared to Dual Destinies, which included a 12-year-old dissecting her mother, because she thought humans can be fixed in the same way as robots. If it goes past that, then I will leave a warning.
