I just saw this video about someone buying a vintage Elna on Instagram, showing off some features.
instagram
My Elna is about 15 years newer than this one. I think it is from the late 60s if I recall correctly, but I noticed the latch cut out was the same shape!
Let’s see if they fit together!

Behold!
Tumblr media
Will I ever use it like this? Maybe, maybe not.

But it is a very cool feature!

Update: 16th May 2023
On May 9th, the French administrative tribunal issued the sentence confirming that the use of the Catalan language is illegal in town hall meetings.
The Article 2 of the French Constitution says that French is the language of the Republic, and doesn't include any reference to local languages. The tribunal uses this article to argue that using Catalan in Northern Catalonia is illegal, and they must use only French instead. The tribunal also uses the Villers-Cotterêts edict from the year 1539, where the King of France bans the use of any language that's not French in the tribunals.
So we can't speak our language in our own country because some king said so in 1539 (Northern Catalonia had NOT even been annexed by France yet, and wouldn't be for another hundred years) and their imperialist mindset has continued until nowadays.
The five towns of Northern Catalonia who are being reprimanded for having used the Catalan language are Elna, els Banys i Palaldà, Portvendres, Sant Andreu de Sureda and Tarerac. They have 3 months to change their town hall laws to ban the use of Catalan and allow only French, but they have announced that they will appeal this decision.
The mayor of Portvendres has changed their rules to make it so any intervention in Catalan must first be given in French, and is awaiting to see if that will soften the tribunal. The mayors and some council members of the other towns stand firm in the defence that people should be able to speak their town's language in the town hall meeting.
The mayor of els Banys i Palaldà has started the town hall's meeting speaking Catalan, French and also English:
The mayor of Tarerac has announced that they will also keep using the Catalan language and dared the French tribunals that, if they want to stop them, they'll have to "send a policeman".

Update from December 2024 here.
The French Government back with their French supremacy 🤦
(23rd September 2022)
The French Government has sued the Town Council of Elna (a small town in Northern Catalonia) because they allow the city officials to read in the Catalan language (which is the local language of Elna!) in the meetings.
According to French law, only French is allowed to be used in public occasions, even in the areas that France annexed but who have an indigenous language of their own, such as Northern Catalonia, which was annexed by France in 1659 against the local people’s will.
The first thing that France did after annexing Northern Catalonia was to forbid the use of the Catalan language in public and only allow French, even though its inhabitants didn’t speak French.
I explained the brutal repression of the Catalan language at the hands of France in this previous post. Summing up, France has spent centuries trying to exterminate the languages and cultures of the peoples it occupied and impose on them the French language. They have done this through humiliation and violence, especially targeted at children. Well until the late 20th century, schools beat children who were heard (or who someone reported to having heard) saying a word in Catalan, and they were punished through humiliation of having to wear a symbol of shame for the “crime” of speaking their mother tongue.
Even nowadays, public schools in Northern Catalonia are not allowed to use the Catalan language in teaching, they have to use French. Children cannot be named with Catalan names with letters that aren’t in French (for example, common names like Martí or Lídia cannot be used because French doesn’t have í”). There is no public media such as a permanent TV channel in Catalan. Signs are only in French. Basically, France bans its use in any space so that the language will have no place to exist and will die.
The town council of Elna passed a law according to which the representatives of the town council could read their interventions in Catalan at the meetings, with the condition that immediately after having intervened in Catalan they read the same text in French.
This doesn’t violate French’s rights (in fact, it’s Catalan speakers who are being discriminated for having to do twice as much work and thus being disincentivized to use their language), because everything would still be in French. But France cannot stand that our languages are still alive, so they will go to trial to punish the town council of an 8,000 inhabitants town.
The mayor of Elna, Nicolas Garcia, received the trial notification this morning and reaffirmed his conviction to fight for the rights of its citizens to use their language in this space:

Translation: We will go to trial and we will win! The Town of Elna has been called before a judge for having allowed to read the official acts also in Catalan. Poor French Republic!
